117 commits since v0.19.2. Minor rather than patch: the headline is the
session⇄game lifetime binding on both planes and both platforms — the
stream ends when the game does, and optionally the reverse — plus
library metadata, winget packaging for the Windows host, a 64-bit ARM
Linux client, headless `--pair` enrolment, DRM card selection for the
compositor-less presenter, and the ABR/latency de-escalation work, which
changes runtime behaviour on every session.

Wire protocol stays at 2, the embeddable C ABI at 13 and the Windows
virtual-display driver protocol at 6, so 0.18/0.19/0.20 hosts and
clients mix freely and no embedder rebuild is required. The new GameMeta
library fields are optional and flat on the wire.

Notes authored ahead of the tag per docs/releases/README.md, so the
release is born with a body.

A freshly spawned headless gamescope never delivered a single PipeWire
buffer when a game was launched: gamescope only composites (and only on a
composite pushes a capture buffer) when a client paints, and a nested
Steam bootstrap paints nothing until its UI's first frame — far longer
than the 10 s first-frame budget. The native plane's retry ladder then
killed the half-booted Steam on every attempt and started from zero; the
GameStream plane died on its single wait. Reused live displays worked,
which pointed away from the real cause (root-caused on .41 with a raw
pw_stream probe: `sleep infinity` nested → 0 buffers ever, `vkcube`
nested → 60/s immediately).

Every bare spawn now backgrounds the host's own splash client
(`gamescope-splash`, hidden subcommand) beside the nested app: a dark
window with a subtle breathing bar painted at ~2.5 Hz — damage from the
first second, so capture gets its first frame within the budget on both
planes. In `--steam` mode gamescope composites only windows whose appid
is in the root `GAMESCOPECTRL_BASELAYER_APPID` list (live-proven: even a
painting vkcube gets zero composites without it), so the splash declares
itself as the Steam UI (STEAM_GAME=769) and seeds the baselayer iff
unset; Steam's own rewrite at game launch hands composite focus to the
game with no action on our side. PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_SPLASH=0 is the
escape hatch.

The dedicated Steam launch is also shaped with `-gamepadui` instead of
`-silent`: the nested Steam is Big Picture — the identity gamescope's
`--steam` integration is built around — so the boot shows the gamepad UI
instead of the desktop client window flashing through the stream, and
gamescope's focus rules (game outranks the Steam UI appid) cover what
`-silent` was working around.

On-glass on .41 (Bazzite, RTX 5070 Ti, gamescope c31743d): cold connect +
Balatro launch delivers frames on the first attempt on both a cold and a
torn-down-then-fresh spawn; Big Picture boot → game handover confirmed.

enricobuehler 7c82a72ecd fix(zerocopy): find the NVIDIA render node instead of assuming renderD128
The EGL importer — the head of the CUDA/NVENC zero-copy path — opened
`/dev/dri/renderD128` and hoped. On a single-GPU host that is the
NVIDIA node and it always worked. On a hybrid laptop the iGPU is bound
first, so renderD128 is Intel: we built a GBM device on Mesa, asked it
for a pbuffer-capable OpenGL config, got none (Mesa's GBM platform
advertises only window-capable ones — gbm_surface is the point of that
platform there), and reported

    zerocopy worker init failed: no EGL config for OpenGL

on a machine whose NVIDIA EGL stack was demonstrably fine, naming
neither the device nor the reason. `PUNKTFUNK_RENDER_NODE` was no
escape either: this path never read it.

Pick the node by what it is — the first `/dev/dri/renderD*` whose
sysfs PCI vendor is 0x10de, the same identification the crate's Vulkan
bridge already uses for its physical device. A local scan rather than a
`pf_gpu` dependency, because this crate is a leaf whose worker is its
own process, and `pf_gpu::linux_render_node` answers a different
question anyway: it follows the operator's GPU *preference*, which may
legitimately name the iGPU. What is needed here is not which GPU to use
but where CUDA is. `PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY_RENDER_NODE` overrides, and no
NVIDIA node found keeps the historical guess — sysfs may just not be
mounted, and the CUDA context is what properly fails on a host with no
NVIDIA at all.

Then stop the config query being able to fail this way: retry without
the surface-type constraint, which is honest because we never create an
EGLSurface — `eglMakeCurrent` runs surfaceless. And name the node in
every error and in the ready line, so the next hybrid host diagnoses
itself.

An all-fixes patch on top of 0.19.1, all host-side:

- KDE Plasma display takeover moved off kscreen-doctor to in-process
  kde_output_management_v2 (86d5d666), with the >60 Hz custom-mode install
  ported too (64511af4) — a KWin host whose kscreen-doctor wedges now disables
  its physicals and hands over the streamed output in ~2.4 ms instead of hanging
  ~26 s and never taking over.
- The gamescope managed takeover is display-manager-flavor-aware (e35dad52) so
  switching a non-SDDM Linux desktop (Nobara / plasmalogin) into Game Mode no
  longer start-limits the display manager into a permanent black screen, and
  in-stream 'Switch to Desktop' is honored under it (a3e21d92).
- Windows display isolation anchors the kept sources at the desktop origin
  (9b241d9d) so an origin-less desktop no longer fails 0x57, with restore
  guaranteed never to leave the desktop all-dark.
- Windows pen/touch/absolute-mouse map over the streamed output's rect rather
  than the whole virtual desktop (087e7d04), so absolute input lands correctly
  when a physical monitor is kept on beside the streamed display.

Nothing moved on the wire (protocol 2) or at the C ABI (13), so no embedder
rebuild and 0.18/0.19 peers keep mixing freely. The Windows virtual-display
driver protocol is unchanged.

Pen, touch, and absolute mouse arrive normalized to the STREAMED display's
frame, but pointer_windows::to_screen and sendinput's MouseMoveAbs mapped
them over the whole virtual desktop — correct only when the virtual display
is the sole active display (Exclusive topology). In Extend — a physical
monitor kept on beside the virtual output, or an Exclusive isolate degraded
to the 0x57 keep-physicals fallback — the streamed output sits at a non-zero
origin, so every sample landed shifted and mis-scaled. The pen exposed it
first (field report 2026-07-24): a stylus is strictly absolute, with no
closed-loop correction onto the target like a cursor.

New pf-inject::stream_target (Windows): the host publishes the streamed
output's CCD target id at capture bring-up (one central site —
capture_virtual_output covers the native and GameStream planes); mapping
sites resolve its current desktop rect through pf-win-display's
source_desktop_rect — the same resolver the cursor-readback poller uses, so
inject and readback always agree — TTL-cached (250 ms) because a
group-layout re-arrange moves a live output's origin mid-session. No target
set / never resolved falls back to the whole virtual desktop (the historical
mapping, still right for Exclusive topology and devtest).

One change in to_screen covers pen + touch; MouseMoveAbs converts the same
desktop pixel into the 0..65535 MOUSEEVENTF_VIRTUALDESK coordinate, closing
the identical latent absolute-mouse bug (apollo-comparison open item #14/#30).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 86d5d66660 fix(kwin): drive display topology over kde_output_management_v2, not kscreen-doctor
A KDE host on Nobara stopped disabling its physical screens and creating the
virtual output the moment it updated: streaming still came up, but bring-up took
~26 s and the streamed output never became the desktop (`also_disabled=[]`).

Root cause is not our topology logic — it's that every `kscreen-doctor` call on
the reporter's session wedges. kscreen-doctor drives libkscreen, which (per
setup) waits on the kscreen KDED module over D-Bus; when that layer is stuck it
blocks in its own connect and never returns, so all five topology queries hit
their 5 s budget and got killed (host log). Reproduced live on a Nobara / KWin
6.6.4 box: `kscreen-doctor -j` there times out at 8 s, every time.

But the compositor's OWN Wayland is fully responsive on that same session — the
host just created a virtual output over it via zkde_screencast. So drive the
topology (resolve our output, take primary, disable the physical/bootstrap
outputs, capture their modes, re-enable on teardown, position) directly over
`kde_output_management_v2` + `kde_output_device_v2` instead of shelling out.
On that same Nobara box the in-process path binds management (v19) and
enumerates the outputs in 2.4 ms — ~3400x faster than the 8 s hang, and immune
to whatever wedges the standalone tool.

- vendor kde-output-management-v2 / kde-output-device-v2 (KWin advertises mgmt
  v19, device v20); generate client bindings inline (the interdependent-protocol
  module split from the wayland-protocols crate; needs the `bitflags` dep for the
  device protocol's bitfield enums).
- new `kwin_output_mgmt`: bounded enumerate-then-apply over one Wayland
  connection; every wait is time-bounded so a genuinely wedged compositor
  degrades to `handled = false` and the old kscreen-doctor path still runs.
- `kwin::create` topology + `apply_position` prefer the in-process path (address
  our output by its stable device UUID, supersede-robust) with kscreen-doctor as
  the fallback. The 60 Hz path now makes ZERO kscreen-doctor calls; only the
  >60 Hz custom-mode install still shells out (its in-process port is a follow-up).

Verified on Linux: cargo test -p pf-vdisplay (73 pass), clippy --all-targets
-D warnings clean, fmt clean, punktfunk-host checks clean. In-process enumeration
proven live against KWin 6.6.4 (the reporter's env); the disable/apply path is
not yet on-glass.

native stop flag made enforceable and bounded (ac3dc432) and GameStream ending
on the control peer's ENet disconnect (41fa25c4), so a session can no longer
outlive the client that started it on either plane.

Also: the Windows input-desktop pair (display writes b5fa878b + pen/touch
injection 24a24734 both surviving a UAC prompt), the Apple display-sleep guard
(bc5f6a38), the gamescope corner-parked cursor (4b2d2d1e), the KWin custom-mode
selection (3a33a694), the tvOS glob warnings (cc8cccbe), and the Linux
starter/env docs revamp (66172753).

Nothing moved on the wire (protocol 2) or at the C ABI (13), so no embedder
rebuild and 0.18/0.19 peers keep mixing freely.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 d5ae8dcc3e feat(capture): gamescope cursor via XFixes shape + QueryPointer position (Phase C)
gamescope excludes its pointer from the PipeWire node it feeds us and can't embed
one either (`set_hw_cursor` is inert), so every gamescope stream was cursorless.
Read the pointer from gamescope's nested Xwayland instead — XFixesGetCursorImage
for shape/hotspot/visibility, core QueryPointer for position — and publish a
CursorOverlay into the capturer's existing `cursor_live` slot, so the encoder
blend composites it into the video exactly like the SPA_META_Cursor path.

- pf-capture/src/linux/xfixes_cursor.rs (new): the XFixes reader. Connects to
  EVERY nested Xwayland (Gaming Mode runs one per --xwayland-count) and follows
  the focused one each tick (the display whose pointer moves), reading that
  display's own cursor shape. Un-premultiplies ARGB -> straight RGBA. Drop stops
  the thread.
- Capturer::attach_gamescope_cursor + the PortalCapturer override spawn it into
  the same `cursor_live` slot; pf_vdisplay::gamescope_xwayland_cursor_targets
  discovers the (DISPLAY, XAUTHORITY) pairs via the GAMESCOPE_WAYLAND_DISPLAY scan.
- host: SessionPlan.gamescope_cursor (set from the compositor at both resolve
  sites AND on a mid-stream Desktop->Gaming switch); the blend gate now builds the
  encoder blend for gamescope; a sibling composite arm attaches capturer.cursor()
  per tick for capture-mode clients (no channel needed). native NV12 is disabled
  for these sessions — that encode path can't blend the cursor (it assumes
  gamescope embeds the pointer), so we capture RGB and route to the proven CUDA
  VkSlotBlend / compute-CSC blend.
- the pipewire thread no longer clobbers `cursor_live` with None on a buffer that
  carries no SPA_META_Cursor (gamescope) — that raced the XFixes writer and
  strobed the composited pointer on/off.

On-glass (home-bazzite-2, RTX 5070 Ti, Gaming Mode): cursor visible + steady in
Big Picture and CS2 menus, follows focus between the two Xwaylands, hidden in-game.

The 0.17.2 placeholder underestimated this cycle: Android mouse & keyboard
(physical mouse + capture, TV remote-as-pointer, IME text, clipboard), the new
committed-text input plane (InputKind::TextInput / HOST_CAP_TEXT_INPUT), and
the ChaCha20-Poly1305 session cipher are feature work — a minor, not a patch.
Wire/driver/C-ABI markers all unchanged (2 / 4 / 10): every addition is
negotiated or ignored by older peers.

Lifts the ~100 Mbps decrypt ceiling on clients without hardware AES — the
armv7 soft-AES targets (webOS TVs), where AES-128-GCM resolves to fixsliced
software AES + software GHASH (~50-100 cpb) while ChaCha20-Poly1305's ARX
construction runs ~10-17 cpb portable, a 4-7x lift that PyroWave-on-TV needs
(design/chacha20-session-cipher.md).

Phase 1 (core crypto, no wire change): SessionKey merges cipher choice and
key material (invalid combinations unrepresentable, zeroize + redacted-Debug
discipline kept); SessionCrypto dispatches both aead-0.5 ciphers per call —
the salt||seq nonce scheme, per-direction salts, seq-as-AAD and replay
window carry over verbatim (same 96-bit nonce / 16-byte tag, const-asserted).
Config.key becomes SessionKey; validate's zero-key rejection follows the
active variant. The C ABI keeps its fixed 16-byte key mapped to AES — no
ABI_VERSION bump.

Phase 2 (negotiation): VIDEO_CAP_CHACHA20 (0x40) — support-plus-request in
one bit, the VIDEO_CAP_444 precedent. Welcome grows cipher@68 +
key_chacha@69..101, emitted only when non-zero so an AES session's Welcome
stays byte-identical to the pre-cipher form; decode is fail-closed (short
key or unknown id -> Err, never a silent AES fallback). No WIRE_VERSION
bump; downgrade resistance inherited from the pinned-TLS control channel.

Phase 3 (host): grant only when the client advertised the bit and the
PUNKTFUNK_CHACHA20 kill-switch (default on, documented) allows; fresh
32-byte per-session key from the same RNG discipline, legacy key field
stays independently random; resolved cipher logged at session start.

Verification: seal/open suites parameterized over both ciphers + a
cross-cipher tamper case; Welcome roundtrip/truncation/fail-closed tests;
ChaCha lossy-loopback soak (loss/replay is cipher-independent); bench
gains _chacha20 series (AES ids unchanged for CI history) — host-side
sealing line-rate-trivial on both x86 (~640 MiB/s) and Apple Silicon
(~535 MiB/s). punktfunk-probe drives the interop matrix via
PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CHACHA20=1 and logs the negotiated cipher.

Phase 4 (pf-webos pin bump + unconditional cap bit) follows the next
core release.

The index is the verification gate: a catalog entry pins one exact version
plus that version's tarball integrity hash, so 'verified on every release'
is a property of the data rather than a promise about process. Nothing can
express 'track latest' for a catalogued plugin.

- store/index.rs   signed index parse + ed25519 verify (ring), validate-and-drop
                   per entry, semver minHost/advisory ranges
- store/sources.rs built-in unom source (compiled-in URL + two key slots for
                   rotation) + operator sources in plugin-sources.json
- store/catalog.rs https fetch with size/timeout/redirect caps, signature before
                   parse, last-good disk cache (stale-but-usable when offline)
- store/jobs.rs    single-flight install/uninstall: registry-integrity preflight
                   against the pin, spawn the runner CLI with live log capture,
                   post-install version check with rollback, provenance record,
                   runner restart (discovery is startup-only)
- store/manifest.rs install provenance; absence means CLI-installed
- mgmt/store.rs    12 routes under /api/v1/store, denied to the plugin token
                   (a plugin that can install plugins is an escalation primitive)

Also generalizes runner discovery and listInstalled from @punktfunk/plugin-*
to ANY scope's plugin-*: catalog entries must be scoped so the scope can map
to that entry's registry, so a third-party plugin necessarily arrives under
its own scope and would otherwise install but never run.

MINOR, not the 0.15.1 originally planned: the 24 commits since v0.15.0 carry 7
features, and they are not incidental — they change the plugin runner's privilege
model. It stops holding the console's full-admin token (scoped plugin-token lane),
the Windows runner drops from SYSTEM to LocalService, public-registry plugin
installs are gated behind an explicit flag, and the systemd user unit is sandboxed.
Operators have workflow-visible changes to absorb (a plugin genuinely needing the
admin surface must now set PUNKTFUNK_MGMT_TOKEN; installing outside the @punktfunk
scope needs --allow-public-registry). A patch label would understate all of that,
and sdk-publish pushes this version straight to consumers.

The other 12 fixes are largely the pf-encode/zerocopy/capture/inject quality sweep
landing: teardown deadlocks, error-path leaks, a GL->CUDA copy race, an odd-height
NV12 overrun, a cursor-meta OOB read, plus the two loss-recovery gaps 0.15.0 left
open (Vulkan Video never got the LTR taint sweep; QSV's sweep skipped its modal
single-swept-slot case).

`WIRE_VERSION` stays 2 and the driver protocol stays v4 — pairings, clients and
installed drivers keep working. The C ABI moves 8 -> 9 (PunktfunkFrame grows
`received_ns`, so receipt is stamped at the session boundary rather than at the
embedder's pull); the gitignored Apple xcframework needs a rebuild for that to
reach the Apple clients. No OpenAPI path changes (45 before and after) — the new
plugin-token lane is auth-layer only — so api/openapi.json moves info.version only.

MINOR, not patch: 44 commits since v0.14.0 split 21 features / 19 fixes, and
/api/v1 gained the per-scanner library-toggle endpoints (additive, already
regenerated into api/openapi.json by c2bba134). sdk-publish pushes this version
to consumers, so a patch bump would understate a new API surface to anyone
pinning ~0.14.

Headline work is the desktop clients drawing level with the Apple revamp: the
Windows client picked up settings parity, a findable console UI in the header,
the shared clipboard (with a per-host toggle), PyroWave decode in the codec
picker, and D3D11VA-first decode + HDR pass-through on Intel; the Linux GTK4
client got the same category-map settings rebuild. Apple landed the intent-based
presenter rebuild and the Dynamic Island redesign. Also: the punktfunk-host
plugins CLI, per-scanner library toggles in the console, and PyroWave raw-dmabuf
zero-copy capture on the Linux NVIDIA host.

Notable fixes: LTR-RFI loss recovery under sustained loss, two encode teardown
memory-safety holes, the audio first-open retry that was leaving sessions
silent, and the GameStream stream-marker announcement on the compat plane.

Every workspace crate is on version.workspace = true, so this stayed a one-line
bump plus the lock sync. (fec-rs, pf-driver-proto, usbip-sim, the Windows driver
crates and pf-vkhdr-layer are deliberately versioned independently and stay put.)

Companion to the host ring fix: pf-client-core declared rustls with
features=["ring"] but WITHOUT default-features=false, so rustls's default
aws-lc-rs backend came along too (feature tree: aws-lc-rs <- rustls default <-
pf-client-core default) — pulling aws-lc-sys 0.41.0 into the Windows client +
session + presenter builds, the same C dep that fails on the CI runner. Pin
default-features=false + [ring, logging, std, tls12] (matching the tray/host/core
pattern). aws-lc-sys now gone from EVERY windows-built crate (host, client-windows,
client-session, tray — all 'cargo tree -i aws-lc-sys' => no match). Code already
used rustls::crypto::ring::default_provider (library.rs); no behaviour change.

Validated: cargo tree (all 4 windows crates aws-lc-free) + .21 clippy -D warnings
(pf-client-core, pf-presenter, punktfunk-client-session) clean.

The Windows host clippy CI broke building aws-lc-sys 0.41.0 (a heavy C dep that
cl.exe fails to compile on the runner). The host was the ONLY thing pulling it:
its rcgen used features=["aws_lc_rs"], and bare `rustls`/`tokio-rustls` take
the default (aws-lc-rs) backend, and gamestream/{mod,tls}.rs installed the
aws_lc_rs crypto provider explicitly — a pre-existing deviation from the
project's documented ring-only design (punktfunk-core + the client are ring).

Align the host to ring: rcgen/rustls/tokio-rustls pinned to the `ring` feature
(keeping tls12 for Moonlight/GameStream TLS-1.2 clients) and the two GameStream
provider installs switched to `rustls::crypto::ring::default_provider()`. Both
providers offer the same standard TLS 1.2/1.3 suites, so it's transparent to the
TLS paths; aws-lc-sys/aws-lc-rs leave the tree entirely (`cargo tree -i
aws-lc-sys` => no match). Not caused by the preceding log fix (that touched no
crypto deps / the lock).

Validated: cargo tree (aws-lc-sys gone, windows target, amf-qsv,qsv features) +
.21 host clippy -D warnings (--features nvenc) clean. Owed: GameStream on-glass
re-check with a real Moonlight client (low risk — same TLS suites, client is
already ring).

GetSurfaceForEncode + GPU CopySubresourceRegion input (zero-copy, no readback
path), bounded sync-point poll, in-place reset with teardown escalation, no-IDR
bitrate retarget (Reset + StartNewSequence=OFF), 10-bit P010 HEVC-Main10/AV1,

Transcoding every image to PNG was the Phase-1 floor, but it bloats lossy
originals (a copied JPEG re-encoded lossless is 5-10x the bytes for zero
quality gain — feeding the render-timeout on constrained links) and flattens
GIFs to one frame. The wire already carries kind LISTS, so offer the original
format beside the portable fallback and let the destination pick:

- New wire kinds image/jpeg + image/gif (§3.5 extension; strings only, no
  protocol change). image/png stays the universal floor every peer accepts.
- macOS: public.jpeg / com.compuserve.gif rows pass through verbatim both
  directions; the PNG floor is announced whenever any image is present.
- Windows: registered JFIF/GIF formats read + promised verbatim; every image
  offer still promises CF_DIB, whose delayed render now fetches the richest
  offered kind (png > jpeg > gif) through the generalized image_to_dib.
- Linux maps gain the matching rows (native MIME pass-through).

this branch split quic/msgs.rs -> quic/{caps,control,...} and client.rs ->
client/{mod,control,worker,pump,planes,...} (W7) and deleted the two monoliths. The
feature had modified both deleted files, so its delta is re-applied onto the split
instead of resurrecting the monoliths:

  - HOST_CAP_CLIPBOARD                         -> quic/caps.rs
  - MSG_CLIP_* / CLIP_* consts, the six Clip*
    structs, and their encode/decode impls     -> quic/control.rs (beside the clock codecs)

The host half of the shared clipboard (design/clipboard-and-file-transfer.md §4),
ported from feat/shared-clipboard (6bd8c18b) into the post-W6 crate shape: the
backends land as a pf-clipboard subsystem crate (the pf-inject/pf-capture
pattern) instead of growing punktfunk-host back out, and the ~340-line
punktfunk1.rs integration is re-implemented against the native.rs/control.rs
split that replaced it.

pf-clipboard:
- host::wayland — ext-data-control-v1 (KWin / wlroots / Sway / Hyprland).
- host::mutter — GNOME via Mutter's *direct* org.gnome.Mutter.RemoteDesktop
  clipboard (no data-control at any GNOME version; the xdg portal needs an
  interactive grant a headless host can't answer).
- host::windows + host::winfmt — Win32 clipboard on a hidden message-loop
  window: WM_CLIPBOARDUPDATE listener + OLE delayed rendering (WM_RENDERFORMAT)
  for text / CF_HTML / RTF / PNG.
- host::session — the backend-agnostic coordinator bridging HostClipboard to
  the QUIC clipboard plane (offers, fetch accept-loop, remote offers, pastes).
- A portable facade (policy / enabled / cap_advertised / ClipCoordCmd / start /
  spawn_decline_loop) so the orchestrator compiles cfg-free on every platform;
  ClipCoordCmd moves into the crate (it was host-owned before).

punktfunk-host glue:
- handshake.rs advertises HOST_CAP_CLIPBOARD via pf_clipboard::cap_advertised.
- serve_session starts the coordinator (gated on a real compositor — the
  synthetic source stays out of the session clipboard) and spawns the
  CLIP_FETCH_UNAVAILABLE decline loop when the policy is on but no backend bound.
- control.rs gains the ClipControl/ClipOffer arms + the host-offer forward
  branch, and the e2e session test (cap advertise → ClipState ack with
  BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE → fetch decline) rides in native.rs's tests.

Still opt-in default OFF (PUNKTFUNK_CLIPBOARD). Remaining: the macOS client
(design §5) — then this becomes user-visible.

driver backend, behind one VirtualDisplay trait; the mode-conflict admission
registry, the display policy/identity/custom-preset state, and the session-env /
gamescope routing) move into crates/pf-vdisplay (plan §W6). The DDC/CI panel-power
control (used only here) and the KWin zkde protocol XML move with it. This
completes the host-crate decomposition: capture, encode, inject, and vdisplay are
now four subsystem crates over the shared leaves, and punktfunk-host is the
orchestrator (serve/supervisor + native + gamestream + mgmt).

Coupling breaks (all down-only, cargo-tree acyclic):
- capture::dxgi identity -> pf_frame::dxgi; win_display/monitor_devnode/
  console_session_mismatch -> pf-win-display leaf; can_open_another_session ->
  pf-encode (the NVENC session-budget admission gate — acyclic peer edge).
- The registry's DisplayCreated/DisplayReleased emits into the host SSE event bus
  invert to a leaf hook: pf-vdisplay emits a neutral DisplayEvent to a
  host-registered DISPLAY_EVENT_SINK, so it never reaches the orchestrator's
  events module.
- The IddCx driver module is renamed pf_vdisplay -> driver (its old name collided
  with the crate name through the host's `mod vdisplay` shim glob).

The host keeps `mod vdisplay { pub use pf_vdisplay::* }` so every crate::vdisplay::*
path (serve/mgmt/native/the capture FrameChannelSender seam) is unchanged; the
heavy deps (wayland/ashpd/tokio + the zkde protocol) moved with the crate.
Co-authored: a fail-closed IOCTL-reply-length security fix (reject short/zeroed
pf-vdisplay driver replies before trusting protocol_version/target_id/wudf_pid/luid,

directly post-retarget. The host keeps a `mod inject { pub use pf_inject::* }`

fake-input protocol XML) moved with the crate.

capture/linux (PipeWire portal) + capture/windows (IDD direct-push: dxgi
mechanics, idd_push + submodules, synthetic_nv12) + pwinit move into
crates/pf-capture behind the Capturer trait + synthetic sources (plan §W6).
The crate speaks pf-frame (CapturedFrame/PixelFormat + the DXGI identity),
pf-zerocopy (CUDA import), and the pf-win-display leaves, and NEVER pf-encode —
the capture->encode edge is one-way. This completes the deliberate capture/encode
crate split (the invasive path the plan had merged into one pf-media): capture
and encode are now separate subsystem crates sharing only pf-frame.

Four seams keep the capturer off the orchestrator:
- VirtualOutput is EXPLODED into primitives (remote_fd/node_id/preferred_mode/
  keepalive) by the host facade, so pf-capture never depends on the vdisplay type;
- FrameChannelSender: the sealed-channel delivery is a Send+Sync closure the host
  facade builds from the pf-vdisplay control device + send_frame_channel IOCTL and
  hands in; ChannelBroker holds the closure instead of the control HANDLE (the
  whole-desktop handle-duplication security boundary is byte-for-byte unchanged);
- console_session_mismatch + desktop_bounds live in pf-win-display (leaf peers);
- pwinit moves here (audio caller -> pf_capture::pwinit).

The host keeps capture.rs as a thin BRIDGE: it re-exports the vocabulary + capturer
types (every crate::capture::* path is unchanged) and keeps open_portal_monitor /
capture_virtual_output, which resolve the ZeroCopyPolicy + FrameChannelSender and
call into pf-capture. verify_is_wudfhost + install_gpu_pref_hook are re-exported
(the gamepad-channel bootstrap + the main.rs subcommand consume them).

Co-developed: the resident-HID-mouse compose-kick hook (HID_COMPOSE_KICK + the
HID-first cursor kick + _display_wake) rides this commit into pf-capture; the host
mouse_windows registration side lands separately on top.

host keeps a mod-encode shim (pub use pf_encode) so every crate::encode::* path
(negotiator + GameStream/native/mgmt planes) is unchanged.

resolve_render_adapter_luid moves from the host's windows/win_adapter.rs into
pf-gpu (both pf-encode and pf-capture need it as a peer of GPU selection); its 5
call sites (encode amf/nvenc, capture idd_push/synthetic_nv12, vdisplay manager)
rewire to pf_gpu::resolve_render_adapter_luid and win_adapter.rs is deleted.
pf-frame's make_device gains a # Safety section (public-unsafe-fn lint, latent
since the pf-frame carve — a full-workspace -D warnings clippy catches it).

PEER instead of the capturer reaching back into the orchestrator (plan §W6).

win_display's one external tie (crate::vdisplay::Mode) becomes the underlying
punktfunk_core::Mode; the cluster is otherwise self-contained (pf-paths for the
state file, serde_json for it, windows). pub(crate) items bump to pub at the
boundary; win_display carries a module-level allow(missing_safety_doc) to keep
the pre-carve behavior (the FFI helpers were pub(crate) unsafe fn with prose
safety docs — the lint only fires once they're pub, and this is an internal
publish=false leaf). The host imports the three modules at its crate root, so
every crate::{win_display,monitor_devnode,display_events}::* path is unchanged.

QoS), session_tuning (Windows process tuning), and the Windows DXGI capture
IDENTITY (WinCaptureTarget, D3d11Frame, pack_luid, make_device + the GPU
scheduling-priority hardening it applies) (plan §W6).

This is the crate that breaks the capture<->encode cycle: FramePayload's GPU
variants own their backends from BELOW (Cuda -> pf_zerocopy::DeviceBuffer,
D3d11 -> dxgi::D3d11Frame), so encode can speak the vocabulary without a path to
capture, and vice versa. The Windows DXGI identity moving here lets capture,
encode, and pf-vdisplay share ONE WinCaptureTarget/device factory instead of the
old capture<->encode<->vdisplay reach-in.

The host keeps thin facades: capture.rs re-exports the vocabulary
(crate::capture::{PixelFormat,…} unchanged); capture/windows/dxgi.rs keeps the
win32u GPU-preference hook + HDR/video-engine converters + self-test and
re-exports the identity; native.rs re-exports boost_thread_priority from
pf_frame. crate::hdr/metronome/session_tuning callers rewired to pf_frame::*.
metronome's Metronome::new gained a Default impl (new_without_default fires once
the type is public across the crate boundary).

backends). A crate::zerocopy shim module keeps every existing path valid until
capture/encode themselves move out.

Granular-crate decision (supersedes the plan's single pf-media): split capture/encode/
vdisplay into separate crates rather than one broad crate — the capture↔encode cycle is
broken by a shared frame-types leaf, and vdisplay→encode (can_open_another_session) is a
legal one-way edge since encode never references vdisplay.

  the interactive user session (temp-file JSON argument; console-mode dev
  hosts get env + stdin like Unix).
- webhook: POST the event JSON, TLS-verified, redirects never followed, no
  punktfunk credentials outbound; optional per-hook secret file yields
  X-Punktfunk-Signature: sha256=<hex HMAC> (fails closed if unreadable).
- filters: exact-match client/fingerprint/plane/app + the same kind
  patterns as the SSE ?kinds= filter (shared crate::events::kind_matches).
- hardening (RFC §9.1): hooks.json via the private-dir/secret-file
  helpers; a hook script path must be operator/root-owned and not
  group/world-writable or it is refused loudly (the sshd rule).
- env mirrors PUNKTFUNK_ON_CONNECT_CMD / PUNKTFUNK_ON_DISCONNECT_CMD for
  the zero-config cases, beside PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD.

Live-verified on Linux: PUT config via API → library.changed fired a real
script (env + stdin observed) and an HMAC webhook (receiver-verified
signature); a chmod-777 script was refused. 342 host tests green
(store/validation/filter/env-flatten/exec-timeout/ownership + routes),
clippy clean.

Community-contributed round 5 of the Steam Controller 2 passthrough,
reviewed + verified. A Puck-captured pad now presents the dongle's real
seven-interface identity (CDC pair, four controller HID slots, management
HID) instead of relabelling its reports as a wired 1302 — Steam's Puck
feature dances (wireless_transport / esb/bond / 0xB4 slot status) get
capture-shaped answers, and the wired identity's canned replies are
corrected to the real captures (attribute count, string-attr framing,
0xF2 firmware info, bcdDevice nibble encoding).

- new wire pref 10 = SteamController2Puck (Hello/Welcome byte; older
  peers degrade to Auto), selected by the Android capture link when the
  transport is a dongle, or by VID/PID in the degraded InputDevice path
- TRITON_RDESC is now the captured numbered descriptor (mouse/keyboard
  lizard collections + per-id vendor reports); unnumbered framing made
  hidraw mangle feature report 2 and Steam eventually closed the device
- interrupt-IN now queues sparse reports (battery/RSSI/wireless edges)
  instead of keeping latest-only, so a 250 Hz state packet can no longer
  erase them before the USB/IP poll observes them; EP0 SET_REPORT is
  split by wValue report type (OUTPUT parsed for rumble vs FEATURE)
- vendored usbip-sim: config attributes/max-power, IAD prefix + BOS
  descriptor support, correct BCD minor.patch encoding (Deck's 0x0300/
  0x0200 values are nibble-zero, so its bytes are unchanged), and
  full-speed interrupt pacing in ms (was 8 kHz from the HS formula)
- Triton feedback is serviced at 1 kHz while an SC2 backend exists so
  Steam's trackpad haptic writes reach the client unbatched

Verified: clippy -D warnings + 319 host tests green on Linux, core wire
tests green, Android kit/app compile + unit tests green. On-glass Puck
retest owed.

PyroWaveEncoder behind --features pyrowave + an explicit
PUNKTFUNK_ENCODER=pyrowave (loud EXPERIMENTAL warning: no client can
decode the stream until CODEC_PYROWAVE negotiation lands, plan Phase 2).

Design (plan §4.3): a private ash Vulkan-1.3 device shared with pyrowave
via pyrowave_create_device — DeviceHold pins the instance/device
create-infos the 0.4.0 API requires alive for the device's lifetime.
Capture dmabufs pass straight through on ANY vendor
(linux_zero_copy_is_vaapi → true for pyrowave; NVIDIA dmabuf→Vulkan
import validated by upstream's interop test on .21) with the same
per-buffer import cache as the Vulkan Video backend; the shared
rgb2yuv.comp BT.709-limited CSC writes R8+RG8 images pyrowave samples
directly (R/G view swizzles synthesize Cb/Cr — no NV12 copy). Encode
records into OUR command buffer (pyrowave_device_set_command_buffer), so
ingest + CSC + encode are one submission with a sub-ms fence wait; the
AU is exactly one pyrowave packet, keyframe=true on every frame.
reconfigure_bitrate is a free in-place budget change (Phase 3 pins the
session rate); reset() recreates only the pyrowave encoder object.

Shared ash leaf helpers (dmabuf import, image/memory utils) extracted
from vulkan_video.rs into encode/linux/vk_util.rs — vulkan-encode
builds unchanged.

Validated on .21 (RTX 5070 Ti): pyrowave_smoke green — encodes CPU
fills through the full open→CSC→GPU-encode→packetize path, decodes
every AU with upstream's own decoder, checks BT.709 plane means ±3;
rate retarget + rebuild covered. clippy clean, 308 host tests green
with the feature on.

Phase 0 of design/pyrowave-codec-plan.md — the opt-in wired-LAN ultra-low-
latency codec. Vendored at upstream 509e4f88 (API 0.4.0, Granite 44362775,
volk + vulkan-headers pins in PUNKTFUNK-VENDOR.txt), pruned to the 6.6 MB
the standalone no-renderer build needs; scripts/vendor-pyrowave.sh
reproduces the tree (a pin bump is protocol-affecting, plan §4.2).

build.rs drives the wrapper CMakeLists (static archives incl. a static
C-API lib upstream only ships shared) + bindgen over pyrowave.h; Linux and
Windows only, empty stub elsewhere (Apple gets a native Metal port, §4.7).
Offline-safe by construction: no network, no system lib, vendored Vulkan
headers — same model as the opus dep (flatpak builder has no network).

Phase-0 validation on .21 (RTX 5070 Ti, driver 610.43.03):
- upstream pyrowave-c-test + interop test (incl. dmabuf/DRM-modifier
  Vulkan<->Vulkan) pass, from the pristine AND the pruned tree
- GPU kernel times at ~1.6 bpp noise: encode/decode 0.090/0.042 ms @800p,
  0.146/0.067 @1080p, 0.226/0.103 @1440p, 0.477/0.201 @4K — order of
  magnitude under NVENC's 1-2 ms retrieve, CBR lands within ~100 B of
  target
- cargo test -p pyrowave-sys green (static link + API-version pin check)

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 236c59754b refactor(gamepad/windows): drop the dead shell fork, use pf-client-core's service
clients/windows/src/gamepad.rs was a 629-line near-verbatim fork of
pf-client-core's SDL gamepad service, frozen at an old single-pad design.
Commit 9822fc3b removed its attach/detach entry points but left the machinery,
so `Worker.attached` was initialized None and never set — ~300-400 lines
(button/axis/touchpad/motion forwarding, Ds5Feedback, the rumble/HID feedback
loop) were logically unreachable, never flagged because the guards read a
runtime Option the compiler can't prove is always None. The live remainder
(pad enumeration + pin persistence) had drifted from core: it opened every
device for metadata (vs core's no-open id-getters), force-enabled the Valve
HIDAPI drivers unconditionally, lacked the steam_virtual skip (so it could pin
Steam Input's virtual pad and kill gyro), and derived the pin key from an
opened handle — risking a cross-process byte-mismatch with the session, which
resolves the same key from id-getters.

The shell's only live job is enumerating pads for the Settings list and
persisting the pin; the spawned punktfunk-session already runs the full
pf-client-core service and does all real forwarding (session/main.rs). So
delete the fork and point the shell at pf_client_core::gamepad::GamepadService
directly — its start()/pads()/set_pinned()/clone() + PadInfo{key,name,
kind_label()} are a strict superset of what the shell uses. Idle, core's
service is hands-off the hardware (id-getter metadata, no device open, HIDAPI
off), which is the intended behavior and fixes the drift class above.

- delete clients/windows/src/gamepad.rs (-629) and `mod gamepad;`
- main.rs / app/mod.rs: use pf_client_core::gamepad::GamepadService
- drop the now-unused direct sdl3 dep (pf-client-core pulls it on Windows with
  the same build-from-source,hidapi features); sync Cargo.lock

Pre-checks (dev Mac): std mpsc Sender<T>: Sync confirmed on the pinned 1.96.0
(so core's GamepadService is Sync for the WinUI cross-thread sharing, no core
change needed); rustfmt clean; no dangling refs. Windows compile is deferred
to CI (windows-only crate, unbuildable on macOS).

MARKETING_VERSION / Android versionName are set from the release tag by CI, so no
client manifest changes; the nested Windows-driver workspace keeps its independent
0.0.1 version.

Also syncs Cargo.lock: the version bump for the 14 members, plus dropping the
now-orphaned crossbeam-channel entry the Windows builtin removal (ef580825) left
behind (it dropped the dep from the manifest but not the lock), so
`cargo build --locked` (ci.yml / deb.yml) stays green.

Release 0.9.2 — self-terminating rumble envelopes (0xCA v2) make "stuck rumble"
inexpressible on the wire and retire the per-client staleness guesses, plus the
