Moving the management API onto Network.framework left one request per
connection, so a library grid paid a TLS handshake per poster where the pooled
URLSession had shared one. And the Apple client -- unlike Windows -- never
cached art at all, so it re-fetched every poster on every visit.

ArtCache: a size- and age-bounded blob cache in the CACHES directory (every byte
is re-derivable from the host, so the system is welcome to evict it). Keyed by
the SHA-256 of the absolute URL, so host-proxy paths and store CDN URLs share
one cache without colliding. Reads touch the entry, so eviction is by last USE,
not last write. Empty bodies and data: URLs are refused -- neither is worth a
file. Defaults: 128 MB, 30 days.

Connection pooling: MgmtConnectionPool keeps up to four keep-alive connections
per host and makes further callers wait rather than opening more, which is the
part that matters -- a grid can ask for dozens of posters at once. A connection
the host dropped since we last used it is indistinguishable from a live one
until we write, so a REUSED connection that fails is retried once on a fresh
one; a fresh failure is a real failure.

Keep-alive means a response can no longer be delimited by the peer hanging up,
so HTTPResponseParser.messageLength finds the end from the framing itself --
Content-Length or the chunked terminal chunk plus trailers. Getting that wrong
would truncate a response or bleed one into the next, silently, so it carries
the bulk of the new tests. A connection with bytes left over after a response is
dropped rather than reused: we never pipeline, so anything trailing means we are
out of sync.

LibraryView closes the loader's pooled connections on disappear instead of
leaving sockets open on a screen the user has left.

16 new tests: message framing (both encodings, partial reads, back-to-back
responses, close detection) and the cache (binary round trip, key separation,
refusals, expiry, LRU eviction).

enricobuehler 244cafe005 refactor(apple): move the mgmt API off URLSession so ATS can stay on
The previous commit bought the library back on VPN/remote hosts by declaring
NSAllowsArbitraryLoads, which works but is blunt: it drops ATS for ALL of the
app's URLSession traffic, and the only other traffic is third-party cover-art
CDN fetches -- the one surface we never wanted to open. It cost the TLS-version
floor, forward secrecy, and the cleartext-HTTP block on URLs the host supplies
at runtime (custom entries and scanner plugins carry arbitrary ones).

So take the host out of the URL loading system instead. MgmtTransport speaks
HTTPS over Network.framework, which ATS does not govern, and states the trust
rule we actually mean in a verify block: the leaf must hash to the fingerprint
pinned during PIN pairing. That is the same rule punktfunk-core has always
applied on the QUIC stream plane -- which is exactly why streaming kept working
over Tailscale while the library did not.

With that, the ATS dict is gone and ATS is fully enforced again. Cover-art CDN
fetches keep ordinary URLSession with full system trust evaluation and no client
certificate. LibraryTLSDelegate is deleted; nothing pins through URLSession now.

Also here:
- HTTPResponse: just enough HTTP/1.1 to read one GET -- status, headers,
Content-Length and chunked framing (hyper streams the art proxy chunked). A
body shorter than Content-Length throws instead of returning partial JSON,
which would otherwise read as "this host has no games".
- LibraryError.pinMismatch, so a re-keyed host says "pair again" rather than
sending someone to debug their network.
- 403 joins 401 as "unauthorized": both are the host declining the certificate.
- baseURL brackets IPv6 literals; the old string interpolation did not.
- 11 tests covering the framings hyper emits and the failure modes that would
  otherwise be silent.

Known trade-off: no connection reuse yet, so each poster costs its own
handshake where the pooled URLSession shared one. Fine on a LAN, worth revisiting
for large libraries over a high-latency link.

The Apple half of the A/V sync overhaul; the Rust half is 12a53183 and this
mirrors its policy rather than re-deriving one.

The host stamps `pts_ns` on every audio datagram and the client decoded it into
`AudioPCM` — and then never read it. Video's `pts_ns` is used end to end (the
end-to-end meter computes a true glass-to-glass `displayed + clockOffset − pts`
per presented frame), so audio free-ran at whatever depth its jitter ring
happened to reach, video was presented on an independent path, and nothing ever
compared them. The A/V offset was an accident of buffer depths: it moved
whenever the ring ratcheted under underrun pressure, and it got WORSE every time
video got faster, because a quicker decoder lowers the video leg and leaves
audio's exactly where it was.

Video is the master:

  audio_e2e = (now + buffered_ahead + clock_offset) − pts_ns
  av_offset = audio_e2e − video_e2e        (> 0 ⇒ audio behind the picture)

`AvSync` smooths that with an EWMA, ignores what sits inside a deadband no
listener can detect, refuses the implausible outright rather than clamping it (a
wall-clock step must not steer the ring), and proposes a depth. Swift refuses
one thing Rust does not have to: the arithmetic itself. The Rust controller
works in i128, while Swift has no Int128 at this tools version, so the terms are
combined with overflow-REPORTING arithmetic instead of the `&-` the latency
meters use. That is not defensive padding — `ptsNs = 1 << 63` reads as
`Int64.min`, the difference lands on exactly `Int64.min`, and `abs()` of that
has no representable result, so checking the overflow flags AFTER the sanity
limit does not mis-measure the stream, it aborts the process from the audio
drain thread. The guard's short-circuit ordering is what makes the sanity check
safe to run at all.

Continuity outranks sync, always. `AudioRing.setSyncTarget` only ever takes a
REQUEST, clamped between the existing underrun-driven floor and the hard cap. A
link whose jitter genuinely needs more buffer than the picture is away keeps its
buffer and the residual is reported. `nil` is the default and reproduces the
previous behaviour exactly. The clamp raises its ceiling to the floor rather
than using it as-is: a device whose callback quantum alone exceeds the hard cap
makes floor > cap, and a plain `min(max(s, floor), cap)` would then hand back
the CAP — quietly below the continuity floor, inverting the exact ordering this
exists to guarantee, on the awkward hardware it exists to survive. (Rust's
`Ord::clamp` announces that condition by panicking; Swift would just get it
wrong, which is worse.)

The reference is the other half, and without it the loop is inert — which is why
this was split out rather than shipped alongside the Rust side. `LatencyMeter`
now publishes its most recent sample as a LEVEL, so the end-to-end meter the
presenter already writes per presented frame becomes the video figure the audio
plane reads. Both present paths (arrival and deadline) feed it without either
knowing audio exists, and the stage-1 fallback presenter — which stamps no
present at all — offers nothing, so the loop correctly declines to correct. The
level EXPIRES, unlike the Rust atomic: this client has a backgrounded keep-alive
that keeps audio playing and drops video decode entirely, and a reference with
no expiry would go on steering the ring against a figure minutes old and frozen.

And the reason none of this was visible: `bufferedMS`/`targetMS` existed only in
a periodic log line, absent from anything a surface could render. The HUD's
detailed tier now carries `audio buffer N ms · a/v ±N ms` and the 1 Hz stats log
gains the same pair, appended last so existing parsers are unaffected — both
numbers, because a deep ring on a jittery link is correct and only the offset
separates that from audio held late.

`PUNKTFUNK_NO_AV_SYNC=1` disarms the loop without a rebuild, as on the Rust
clients.

Verified: swift build + 225 tests (5 skipped) green. Every new gate was proven
non-vacuous by planting its own defect and confirming the gate caught it — the
continuity invariant, the clamp inversion, the deadband, both refusal paths, the
evidence threshold, the sync-pressure relax, the reference's staleness and its
survival of a drain, and `setSyncTarget` being live at all rather than dead
code, which is how the previous pass in this area shipped a correction that was
structurally unreachable with a green test. Two gates came back VACUOUS on the
first sweep and are the reason their inputs look so specific: the overflow test
was being caught by the sanity limit instead of the overflow guard, and the
refused-reference test was being caught by `latestSample`'s own `> 0` check
rather than by where the publish sits.

enricobuehler 5a4305c072 merge: bring current main into the gyro correctness branch
main moved ~60 commits while this branch was in progress, and one of them matters
here: PR #88 (the phone-gyro mirror) landed, touching the same motion path.

One conflicted file, `GamepadCapture.swift`, in three places — all of them the two
changes meeting rather than disagreeing:

- **Slot fields.** #88 added `motionSent` + `lastAccel` for its flush-parks-motion fix;
this branch removed `lastMotionNs` with the 4 ms drop-throttle. Kept both decisions:
the parking state stays, the throttle field goes.
- **forwardMotion's head.** #88 added the mirror stand-down (`pad 0` yields while the
phone speaks for it); this branch deleted the throttle guard. Kept the stand-down,
  dropped the guard.
- **The send.** This branch converts into the DualSense report frame; #88 records what
went out so `flush` can replay it beside a zero gyro. Both, with the recording placed
AFTER the conversion — `flush` replays `lastAccel`, so it has to be the vector that
actually went on the wire, or a still pad's gravity gets parked in the wrong axis.

The two features compose exactly, which is worth stating because it is not luck: this
branch gates motion capture on `hasRotationRate`, and #88 engages the phone mirror when
`hasRotationRate != true`. They are complements — a pad either drives its own gyro or the
phone mirrors for it, never both and never neither.

Everything else auto-merged. Note `DeviceGyroRemapTests` is `#if os(iOS)`, so the macOS
suite reports the same 215 as before the merge rather than gaining #88's six — checked,
not assumed.

Gates re-run against the merged tree rather than trusting either side's: Linux fmt +
build + `clippy --locked --all-targets -D warnings` + punktfunk-core and pf-inject
suites; Apple 215 tests and the iOS-triple typecheck; Android kit + app compile and
tests. All green.

enricobuehler efb7f99129 fix(client/apple): motion arrived in the wrong frame — measured against a real pad
G16 step 1, and the second half of what 9e9bb9f4 started. That commit fixed the SIGN
of acceleration (Apple reports the gravity vector, pointing down; a pad reports proper
acceleration, pointing up). This fixes the FRAME, which is a separate defect and was
never going to show up as an inverted axis — it shows up as roll where the game reads
yaw.

The wire is a unit passthrough. `dualsense_proto::write_report` puts gyro[0..3] and
accel[0..3] straight into the virtual pad's report bytes 16.. and 22.., in order, with
no permutation — the same slots a real DualSense fills. So the frame the wire is
DEFINED in is the pad's own report frame, and forwarding GameController's x/y/z
unconverted was speaking a different language with the same vocabulary.

Both frames measured 2026-08-07 from ONE physical DualSense on one desk, read twice —
over raw HID and through GameController — so this is two readings of the same
controller in the same orientations rather than two documents:

DualSense report frame: (Right, Up, Backward) axis 0 pitch, 1 yaw, 2 roll
  GameController frame: (Right, Forward, Up)

Right is already slot 0; Up is GC's z and moves to slot 1; slot 2 wants Backward, which
is GC's y negated. Hence (x, z, -y), applied to gyro AND acceleration because it is a
change of basis and both live in that basis.

Notable: the wire's documented naming was right all along — gyro[0]=pitch, [1]=yaw,
[2]=roll is exactly what the hardware does. And Android needs no remap at all: it
forwards the pad's own axis order un-remapped, which is correct. Its old reading was
purely the scale bug f6de620f fixed. Only Apple was converting nothing.

How the hardware frame was established, since a wrong frame here is invisible. Gravity
at rest put +0.997 g on axis 1. Yaw clockwise-from-above drove axis 1 negative (98% of
the rotation), pitch nose-down drove axis 0 negative (100%), roll right-side-down drove
axis 2 negative (95%) — plain right-hand rule, and (a0 x a1 = a2) confirms the triad is
right-handed. The accelerometer then corroborated the gyro's assignment independently:
under pitch-down axis 2 rose 0.160 -> +0.339 (nose down raises the back, so world-up
gains a Backward component) and under roll-right-down axis 0 went +0.021 -> -0.197,
while yaw left acceleration untouched. Two different physical quantities agreeing on
one triad.

Apple's frame took four attempts, and the failures are worth recording because each was
a different way to be confidently wrong:
  - peak |w| over a window containing BOTH the tip-down and the return stroke can record
    the return, with the opposite sign. Yaw (a continuous one-way spin) was unaffected;
pitch and roll were exactly the two that disagreed with everything else.
  - reading `gravity + userAcceleration` when `hasGravityAndUserAcceleration` is FALSE
yields a constant (0,0,1) in every orientation. It looks like data. The tell is that
it never moves. The client's own else-branch on `m.acceleration` is the correct read
and is what the instrument now mirrors.
  - `da/dt = -w x a` holds only for gravity, so testing it during vigorous waving — when
`m.acceleration` carries inseparable linear acceleration — fits nothing.
The frame that survived all of that: static poses, three of them, three repetitions
each. Nose-down moved axis 1 by -0.635 (so axis 1 is Forward), right-side-down moved
axis 0 by -0.686 (so axis 0 is Right), flat put +0.99 on axis 2 (Up). That conclusion
holds whether or not the acceleration negation is right, because negating flips the
measured vector and the physical direction it represents together.

Confidence, stated honestly. The accelerometer half is solid: nine pose measurements,
and mapping the flat pose through gives (+0.005, +0.992, +0.192) against the hardware's
own (+0.021, +0.997, +0.160) — all three components, including the small tilt term that
is what distinguishes this mapping from the five other permutations that also put
gravity on slot 1. That the gyro shares the frame unmodified rests on a weaker
measurement: a gravity-dominated consistency test that preferred (+x,+y,+z) by 1.22x,
which is a margin, not a landslide. It is corroborated by the yaw reading (the one
rotation measured without the return-stroke ambiguity) agreeing with right-hand rule in
that frame, and by the peak-vs-return mechanism explaining the two that did not. A
device-side confirmation is still owed and is listed below.

The tests carry the measurements, not just the conclusion. Resting gravity is asserted
against BOTH readings of that pose; each rotation is asserted to reach the slot the wire
reads it from; and two properties guard the shape rather than the numbers — that the
conversion is an isometry (a basis change may not stretch anything) and that it
preserves handedness. That last one matters most: a permutation with the wrong number of
sign flips is a REFLECTION, which looks plausible axis by axis and inverts every
rotation. Mutation-checked: dropping only the negation fails 6 assertions across 4 of
the 5 cases, the handedness test among them.

Owed, and not claimed done: on-glass re-verification through a real iOS device, together
with the two already owed on that rig (the 9e9bb9f4 sign fix and the Android
calibration read) — one pass covers all three. G14's DualSense neutral acceleration is
now unblocked by this measurement (1 g on slot 1, not the z-up the notes assumed) but is
deliberately left to its own change; and that constant must NOT be propagated to
switch_proto, which is a different device whose frame nobody has measured.

Gate: macOS `swift build` + the full suite (215 tests, 5 skipped, 0 failures) with the
five new cases observed in the run's own output, and the iOS-triple typecheck green.

enricobuehler aaa58ad817 feat(client/apple): say when a pad's gyro can't reach the session, and stop powering it
G8's Apple half — the UI hint 77797a9e left owed, plus the suppression, which on
this client is worth more than it was on the SDL one.

The failure being fixed is entirely silent. A controller with a gyro, in a session
whose virtual pad has no motion plane, simply does nothing when tilted: nothing
in the app says so, and from the couch a session that resolved an X-Box backend
is indistinguishable from a broken sensor. The fix is the Controller type setting,
so the hint has to name it — a badge that only said "motion unavailable" would
leave the player exactly as stuck.

Asked per pad, off what the slot declared, via the predicate punktfunk-core now
carries. `GamepadCapture` is the one client where this is naturally per pad
already: `openSlot` computes `manager.declaredKind(for:)` and puts it in
`slot.pref`, so the question is answered where the pad is opened rather than on
every sample. `GamepadType.motionReaches(declared:asked:resolved:)` is static and
pure so it can be tested without a live session; the connection's instance method
fills in the two halves it owns, and `requestedGamepad` is stored beside
`resolvedGamepad` for the same reason it exists in the Rust client — the echo is
only this pad's answer when the pad declared what we asked for.

Where Apple differs from the SDL client, and better: it never powers the IMU. The
existing code already declined to activate sensors when forwarding was off,
reasoning that with nothing to forward there is no reason to make the pad stream
gyro over Bluetooth and burn its battery — `closeSlot` is careful to power them
back down for exactly that reason. A host that built this pad a backend without a
motion plane is the same situation, so it takes the same branch. No per-sample
check, no handler attached, and a DualSense in an X-Box-class session stops paying
for a sensor nobody reads.

The hint fires only for a pad that really has a gyro (`motion.hasRotationRate`).
A gravity-only GCMotion — what an X-Box controller exposes — would otherwise
produce a notice about a feature the player never had. That is a narrower
condition than the capture path itself uses, deliberately: making the capture
gate agree is G13's job and its own change.

The badge sits in the bottom-centre stack with the muted-mic badge and the
start-of-stream banner, at every stats tier and with the overlay off, because
this is not a statistic. Unlike the mic badge it is not a control: the setting is
not reachable mid-stream on every platform and applies from the next session
anyway. So it states the fact, names the setting, and leaves after the banner's
same 6 s. Every platform including tvOS — a DualSense on an Apple TV is an
ordinary way to play, and is exactly the pad this happens to. The model owns the
expiry rather than the view, so a second pad's hint replaces the first cleanly
instead of stacking, and ending the session cancels a pending clear rather than
carrying a stale hint into the next stream.

Non-vacuity proven by mutation, not assumed: collapsing the predicate to
`resolved.hasMotion` fails 4 assertions, including the mixed-pad row that is the
whole reason it is not a session-level check. The table mirrors the Rust one row
for row — a client that disagrees with the host here either kills a working gyro
or streams ~250 Hz into a void, and both are silent.

Gate: macOS `swift build` + the FULL suite (210 tests, 5 skipped, 0 failures) with
the two new cases observed in the run's own output, and the iOS-triple typecheck
green (`arm64-apple-ios17.0`, iOS slices + hand-assembled xcframework per the
memory recipe) — the badge and the overlay it joins are on every platform, so the
macOS build alone would not have covered them. tvOS remains unverifiable from
this Mac; the badge deliberately reuses the neighbouring banner's shape rather
than introducing anything tvOS-specific.

enricobuehler 1f54b75c5c feat(client/apple): the phone's gyro can speak for a gyro-less pad
Opt-in "Gyro from this device" (DefaultsKey.gyroFromDevice, off by default,
iOS only): while player 1's forwarded controller reports no rotation rate of
its own — no GCMotion, or the gravity-only motion an Xbox pad exposes — this
device's IMU sources pad 0's wire motion instead. The rumble-on-device
mirror's sibling, data flowing the other way: same session-scoped
UserDefaults read, same hardware-gated settings rows, same pad-0 rule.

DeviceGyro wraps CMDeviceMotion at the ~100 Hz CoreMotion ceiling on a
dedicated serial queue (not main — the controller path's main-queue delivery
is a known jitter source), converts with the shared GamepadWire constants,
and rotates each sample from the device's portrait frame into the controller
frame by interface orientation, so a phone clipped landscape yaws when the
player yaws instead of rolling. The remap matrix is derived and pinned by
DeviceGyroRemapTests.

GamepadCapture owns engage/stand-down (reconcile, suspend/resume, stop), and
suppresses pad 0's controller-motion forwarding while the mirror runs — two
writers on one pad's motion state would fight, and the accel-only stream
would stomp the mirror's gyro with zeros.

Also fixes the stale-motion latch from the gyro sweep on the controller
path: flush now parks motion at zero (keeping the last accel, so gravity
doesn't become free-fall), and the mirror's stop sends the same closing
zero. The host holds motion as state and re-emits it — a nonzero angular
velocity left behind read as endless rotation for as long as an overlay
(Control Center pull-down) kept the app inactive.

enricobuehler 64c92da356 fix(client/apple): the jitter ring deepens on the sessions that actually starve
The shared JitterPolicy grew an adaptive target floor — clustered genuine
underruns raise the live target a step at a time up to max_target_ms, a long
quiet spell relaxes it back — and the three Rust rings all run it via
note_read. The Apple ring is the one hand-written mirror, and it mirrored the
shed half but not the growth half: its target was pinned at the 20 ms base
forever. On Wi-Fi that bunches arrivals (power-save is the classic; the field
MacBook report is the symptom), 20 ms is regularly shorter than one delivery
stall, so the ring re-primed through every stall for the whole session —
crackle that never got better, on exactly the client where a Moonlight with a
deeper buffer sounds fine on the same host and network.

The ring now carries the full mirror of note_read: 3 underruns inside a 5 s
window grow the target 10 ms (capped at COREAUDIO's 70), 30 s of quiet gives a
step back, and the write-side hard trim follows the grown target (including
the Rust policy's target+quantum guard, which the mirror also lacked). New
tests pin the mirror to the Rust suite's expectations — growth, relax, the
cap — plus the field scenario end to end: bunched 60 ms deliveries with every
fourth burst 30 ms late converge to a silence-free tail instead of crackling
forever.

The first pass built each palette by rotating ONE colour field's hue, and it
showed: every option was a single tone at several brightnesses, which reads flat
next to any real gradient. A palette is now an ordered ramp of DISTINCT hues.
The 4×4 mesh samples that ramp along the diagonal with a fixed per-cell offset
table, so neighbouring cells land on different parts of it and the colours pool
and swirl instead of banding; the control points' existing drift then moves the
pools around. Violet keeps its explicit sixteen colours, so the default is
untouched.

Twelve of them now, dark first then pale: Violet, Nebula, Abyss, Ember, Moss,
Graphite, then Holo, Sunset, Bloom, Dawn, Mint, Opal. Holo and Sunset are
straight takes on the two reference gradients — foil and poster.

`every_palette_is_multi_tone` measures the hue spread across all sixteen cells
and fails under 45° (20° for Graphite and Opal, which are meant to be
restrained). It caught Ember at 35°, all reds and oranges — the very flatness
this rework exists to remove — and Graphite at 3° despite a comment claiming it
drifted cool to warm. Both were rebuilt until the numbers matched the prose.

The UI follows the palette now, rather than wearing brand violet over whatever
happens to be behind it. Each palette carries an accent and a light flag, and an
Ink derived from those (foreground, accent, on-accent, glass, scrim and its
strength) is published to the whole tree — a thread-local in the console, an
environment value on Apple, a CompositionLocal on Android. Pale palettes flip
the ink: dark text on white frost, with the materials, tray scrims and every
wash that sits under text following suit.

Three things only the renders could have told us:

  - Additive blending blows out over a pale ground. Android's blobs and Apple's
legacy field composite with Plus/plusLighter, which over near-white
saturates every blob to white — Holo rendered as a grey wash. Pale palettes
    blend normally.
  - A white scrim at the dark field's strength BLEACHES the gradient. Mixing
toward black at 0.4 reads as depth; toward white at 0.4 destroys the chroma
it is drawn over. The scrim now carries a per-palette strength.
  - White glass over a bright field has far less separating it from its backdrop
than dark glass over a dark one, and needed more body.

Verified: console build + clippy -D warnings + 173 tests, Apple build + 200
tests + an iOS-triple typecheck, Android compile + 62 tests, and eyeball passes
on real renders of both the vivid and the pale ends (console CPU rasters; a new
Roborazzi light-palette scene, which is what exposed the blend-mode bug).

enricobuehler 78ad675507 feat(clients): a safe-area resolution that keeps the picture out of the notch

Picking the device's native mode on a phone hands the host the panel's own
aspect ratio, so the aspect-fit presenter fills every pixel — including the ones
behind the sensor housing and under the four rounded corners. That is why the
corners look cut off at max resolution while 1080p has always been fine: a 16:9
mode on a 20:9 phone pillarboxes, and those black bars land exactly on the
unsafe regions.

So the fix is entirely a sizing one — no layout change, no input change. Ask the
host for a mode narrowed by the unsafe inset and the existing aspect-fit centres
it inside the safe region; pointer mapping follows for free, because both
clients derive the picture rect from the live host mode rather than assuming
full-bleed.

Apple: `SafeDisplay` (PunktfunkShared, pure + unit-tested) and a "This device
(safe area)" row beside the native one, using Moonlight's formula — full native
height, width less the left+right safe insets. The stream is always landscape
but the settings screen may be portrait, where the same housing is reported on
`top` and the horizontal insets read zero; the portrait top inset stands in,
gated so an iPad's status bar never fabricates an inset.

Android: the same shape via `SafeArea` + a `SAFE_AREA_MODE` sentinel resolved at
connect like the existing `0`=native one. The cutout insets get the same
portrait fallback, and the rounded corners are added on top — Android does not
count them as cutout, and a full-height picture needs exactly the corner radius
of horizontal clearance.

Both even-floor and clamp, since `validate_dimensions` rejects odd dimensions
and an inset subtraction lands odd about half the time. Where a display has
neither cutout nor rounded corners the safe mode equals the native one, which on
Apple lets the existing dedup drop the duplicate row.

A field report from an iPad: the host is not found on first run, and
restarting the client finds it. Pull-to-refresh appeared to do nothing.

Both were real. The Apple client's discovery had three ways to go
permanently deaf, each needing an app relaunch to clear:

- A failed resolve was never retried. `browseResultsChangedHandler`
only fires when the result SET changes, and a host whose resolve
failed is still in the set — so nothing ever re-offered it.
- A stuck resolve never ended. `NWConnection` has no timeout, so the
throwaway UDP flow used to resolve an address could sit in
`.preparing`/`.waiting` forever, and a service with a connection in
  flight was skipped.
- `NWBrowser` parking in `.waiting` was ignored (only `.failed`
re-armed). On iOS that is where the local-network privacy prompt
lands on first launch after install: the browse starts, the system
asks, and the browser waits. Granting does not revive that browser —
only a new one sees the grant. That is the reported first-run bug.

HostDiscovery now runs a 1 Hz sweep that times out stuck resolves,
retries failed ones on a 1→30 s backoff, and re-arms a browser that
stopped working; the advert's TXT is re-read on every browse report, so
a host that re-keys or flips its pairing policy is followed. Returning
to the foreground re-arms the browse (iOS/tvOS: `onAppear` does not
fire across background/foreground, and a suspended browse stays dead).

Pull-to-refresh did nothing because there was no `.refreshable` in the
client at all. Added, plus the explicit control the report asked for:
a toolbar Refresh on iOS/macOS, an action-row button on tvOS, a Rescan
tile in the gamepad launcher, Scan Again on the empty state, a
header-bar button in the GTK client, a hosts-page button on Windows,
and Scan again on Android. Decky already had one.

The desktop/Android browses needed a rescan trigger to make those
buttons mean anything: mdns-sd re-queries on a doubling backoff capped
at ONE HOUR, so a long-lived browse is effectively passive and a host
that appears later can stay invisible. `discovery::Rescan` forces a
fresh query; the wake-and-wait loops use it too, so a host that just
booted is noticed in seconds rather than at the next backoff tick.

Also fixed, found on the way: clients/windows/src/discovery.rs is a
second copy of the browse that d0fa8bd3 ("pin mDNS discovery to IPv4 on
every client") missed. It took an arbitrary first address, so when a
host's OS responder answered AAAA the Windows GUI rendered a card that
failed on every click. It also never noticed a dropped receiver, leaking
a thread and a :5353 socket per wake-and-wait.

Gates: Apple macOS + iOS (arm64-apple-ios17.0, proven non-vacuous) build
clean, 195 tests pass incl. a new one asserting a rescan re-finds a
still-advertising host. On .21: fmt, clippy --all-targets -D warnings
and build clean for pf-client-core + client-linux + client-session,
117 tests pass. Android :kit: and :app: compileDebugKotlin clean.
The Windows client is UNGATED — its CI runner was unreachable.

The console settings were one 30-row scroll, which on a Deck meant thumbing past
Video and Audio to reach the pad settings. They are now split across sections —
Stream · Video · Audio · Controller · Interface · Profiles, plus Input on the
desktop console, which alone carries the touch/mouse rows. L1/R1 walks them,
each section remembers where its cursor was, and the names are the same word on
every client so a setting is where you looked for it last.

Shoulders are not the only route, because a D-pad remote hasn't got any: on
Android, Up from the first row moves onto the strip (left/right walks sections
there, A drops back in), and on tvOS the pills are focusable, so the focus
engine handles it — a Siri Remote has no extended gamepad profile and never
reaches the input poll at all. The desktop console needs neither; PageUp and
PageDown already map to the same events.

New "Background" row, six palettes: Violet (the brand default), Tide, Forest,
Ember, Rose, Graphite. A palette is a hue rotation plus a saturation scale over
the ONE colour field each client already draws, so every palette inherits its
structure and Violet is the identity transform — existing installs see exactly
what they see today. The maths is ported three times (Rust/Swift/Kotlin) under
one shared `ui_palette` key, with the same assertions pinned in each language.
It is presentation only, so it is a device preference and never part of a
profile.

The form screens no longer have a backdrop of their own. Settings, add-host and
pair used to sit on a still gradient; they now wear the same living field at a
calm mix — pools dimmed onto the palette's own corner colour, vignette halved so
rows that run to the edges don't get crushed. On the desktop console that
collapsed the old aurora-over-static crossfade into one shader pass with a
chased uniform. Motion speed is identical in both modes on purpose: changing it
would make the field jump mid-transition. Nothing in the gamepad UI is backed by
a static image now, and Reduce Motion (Apple) / "remove animations" (Android)
still freeze it.

Also: the settings screen had no raster coverage at all — the eyeball dump is
`#[ignore]`d — so a new test draws every tab, and the Android screenshot set
gains a console-settings scene. Both earned their keep immediately: the renders
showed the extra hint pushing "Done" off a 360 dp phone (the legend scrolls now,
and the Section cell only appears where shoulders exist) and the form backdrop
crushing its own edges.

Twelve findings from the sweep's DRY/docs/dead-code tail. Most are small; three found
real defects hiding behind the duplication.

**The UHID event ABI existed five times.** Every UHID gamepad backend — DualSense,
DualShock 4, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, Steam Controller 2 — carried its own verbatim
copy of the kernel's constants plus its own `put_cstr`, and they had already drifted:
`switch_pro` was missing the SET_REPORT pair entirely, and `steam_controller` read a
FIXED 16-byte SET_REPORT window instead of the event's own `size`. That last one is a
bug in both directions — a longer report was truncated, and a shorter one had the parser
reading whatever the reused event buffer still held past the payload, i.e. acting on
rumble values the game never wrote. Now one `uhid_abi` module owns the numbers plus the
two accessors that are easy to get subtly wrong, with tests on exactly that.

**A dead force-feedback id fallback.** ff-core's `input_ff_upload` picks a free effect
slot and writes it into the effect BEFORE uinput forwards the request, so the `id == -1`
branch could never run — and allocating from a local counter would have been the wrong
answer anyway, since the kernel owns that id space. Removed, with a `debug_assert` where
it stood.

**Apple's HID path silently dropped weak rumble.** `hidByte` took the top byte with no
non-zero floor, so every amplitude below 0x0100 rendered as exactly nothing. Android has
always floored it at 1; this was the odd one out. That converter also existed twice
byte-identically inside one Gradle module — now one `wireAmplitudeToByte`.

Also: the DS5 output-report layout gets named offsets (`dualsense_proto::out_report`)
documenting all three transport bases — USB 0, SDL payload −1, Bluetooth +2 — since the
differing bases are transport-forced, not drift. `pf-client-core` cannot import them (it
and `pf-inject` do not depend on each other, and a DualSense layout has no business in
`punktfunk-core`, their only shared crate), so its copy now DERIVES its offsets by
explicit subtraction and a test pins the relationship. `PUNKTFUNK_HID_EFFECT_MAX` sizes
the struct it describes instead of a second literal 11 — the header now emits
`uint8_t effect[PUNKTFUNK_HID_EFFECT_MAX]`. The rumble policy engine's `min_pulse_ms`
and `keepalive_ms` docs stop naming cases nothing implements: no in-tree caller sets
`min_pulse_ms`, and the macOS DualSense-over-BT keepalive the doc cited CANNOT be served
by the quirk, because that renderer skips writes whose levels are unchanged and would
swallow the engine's re-emit — it keeps its own keepalive instead. `TrackpadHaptic` is
marked as staged scaffolding (the tag is on a shipped wire; removing the variant would
not reclaim it). Three ×257-vs-`<<8` doc comments corrected — the scaling itself is fine,
both round-trip to 255. `backstop_ms.max(160)` deleted as unreachable (the engine floors
at 500). New tests for `Ds5Feedback` and for the Android rumble JNI packing on BOTH sides,
with `MAX_PADS <= 16` now a compile-time assertion rather than a comment.

Closes S1-S9, S11, T2, T3 (design/haptics-sweep-2026-08-03.md M12).

S11's second half is NOT a defect and was left alone: `clients/session/src/main.rs`
calls `set_forwarding` unconditionally on every params-build (its own comment explains
why — browse mode reuses one service across launches), so `Ctl::Forwarding` routinely
arrives unchanged and that early-out is what stops a redundant `sync_open` + Valve-HIDAPI
cycle each launch.

Verified: pf-inject clippy -D warnings 0 / 91 tests; pf-client-core + punktfunk-core
clippy 0 / 437 tests (amd64 container); punktfunk-client-android 7 tests; Android :kit:
6 tests; Apple swift build + 189 tests / 0 failures; cargo fmt --all --check clean. Each
new test probed by reverting its fix — the fixed SET_REPORT window fails 3, a broken pack
shift fails 3, dropping the amplitude floor fails 1, and a wrong DS5 offset either fails
the pin or refuses to compile.

Turn "Forward controllers" off and four rows below it stop meaning anything — nothing is
forwarded, so there is no pad type to pick and no guide button to route. GTK desensitised
them, the touch settings on both mobile clients dimmed them and the console UI refused the
step; the Windows client and BOTH controller-navigable screens left them fully live, so you
could sit there changing settings that did nothing.

Windows: `.enabled(s.gamepad_forwarding)` on the forwarded-controller picker, pad type,
guide button and hold-Select rows — the same builder the echo-cancellation row already used
to follow the mic switch.

Apple's gamepad settings had no way to say it: `Row` carried `adjustable` (which only hides
the chevrons) and nothing else. Added `Row.enabled`, dimmed the row CONTENTS only so the
glass still reads as a focusable row, and enforced the inertness centrally in `adjust(id:)`
/ `activate(id:)` rather than in each builder's closure. The hint bar drops "Adjust"/"Change"
on a dimmed row, because advertising them was the same lie the live row told.

Android's gamepad settings already had `GpRow.enabled` — documented as "dimmed + inert" —
but it only faded the label: every dimmed row still stepped and still wrote its setting. The
"No profiles yet" placeholder looked inert only because its own closures were empty. Made it
real in one named place (`liveRow`), covering all three input paths (left/right, A, and a tap
on the already-focused row), then gated the pad rows on it.

Also on that screen: the DualSense / DualShock passthrough toggle, which the touch settings
have carried beside its SC2 twin all along. It was missing exactly where it matters most —
a TV box has no touch interface to fall back to, so there was no way to reach it at all.

Apple capture, separately: with forwarding off, opening a slot still claimed EVERY element's
system gesture and powered the controller's IMU. Neither reaches the host, so the first only
took the user's screenshot/Home gestures away for nothing and the second drained the pad's
battery streaming gyro over Bluetooth. Narrowed rather than skipped — the escape chord is
read off the same slot and on tvOS is the ONLY controller way out of a stream, so the chord's
own four buttons keep their claim. A test pins the alias list against the chord mask; if they
drift the symptom is a session nobody can leave, with nothing logged.

Closes R17, R18, R19 (design/haptics-sweep-2026-08-03.md M11). R17 as filed named Windows and
"Apple"; Apple's TOUCH settings were already correct and Android's controller-navigable screen
was not — both corrected here.

full suite 192 tests / 0 failures (3 new); Android :app: + :kit: green (5 new); cargo fmt
--all --check clean. Each fix probed by reverting it — every probe failed the tests it should.

BREAKING (C header only): constants such as MAX_PADS, TAG_LEN, ABI_VERSION,
INPUT_MAGIC and the whole BTN_/AXIS_ family are now PUNKTFUNK_-prefixed.

cbindgen emits a bare #define per `pub const`, so those names landed in the
namespace of every C program that includes the header. The rename table already
said this was the rule and already carried the handful someone had noticed —
and its own comment spells out why it matters: a clashing #define silently
takes the last definition rather than failing to compile, so the failure mode
is a wrong value, not a build error. This is the remaining 149.

Associated constants are deliberately left alone. cbindgen already qualifies
those with their type name, which is the very property whose absence makes a
bare MAX_PADS dangerous — they are namespaced, just not by us.

Nothing in this repository consumed the unprefixed spellings except one Swift
test, which sat next to lines already using the prefixed form because its
constant happened never to have been added to the table; it is updated here.
The C harness links and runs against the regenerated header.

Scheduled deliberately: the sweep flagged this for a release boundary, and
0.24.0 has shipped. External C embedders using the old spellings must add the
prefix; there is no silent breakage, since the old names simply stop existing.

CI caught what my local harness could not: reading `huge.count` inside the closure that already
holds `huge` exclusively is an exclusivity violation, so PunktfunkKitTests failed to compile.

The blind spot is worth recording. I verified `AudioRing` by compiling it against a standalone
harness whose bodies were TOP-LEVEL code, where Swift applies DYNAMIC exclusivity — the same
statement in a function body gets the static check and is a hard error. A harness that does not
share the shape of the thing it stands in for can be green for a reason the real build does not
have. The harness now puts every body in a method and compiles with
`-enforce-exclusivity=checked`.

Length now comes off the buffer pointer (`$0.count`), which is what the closure already owns.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 a12f1f092c feat(clients/audio): one de-jitter policy for all four rings, and lossless single-packet recovery
Phase 4 + WP3.2 of design/audio-quality-and-latency.md.

**The defect.** Every client ring primed *up* to a target and clamped at a ceiling, and none
walked the depth back *down*. Any transient — a Wi-Fi arrival burst, a host stall, or plain
host-DAC-vs-client-DAC skew of a few dozen ppm — therefore added latency permanently, until
an underrun happened to re-prime. Android, with no shed at all, converged on its 120 ms hard
cap and stayed there for the rest of the session; that is the "audio latency is too high"
report. Apple did shed, 40 ms in one go, which its own comment called "one audible blip".

All four now share `punktfunk_core::audio::JitterPolicy`: depths in MILLISECONDS rather than
device quanta (`3 x quantum` meant 15 ms at a 5 ms quantum and a silent 64 ms at a 20 ms
one), a crossfaded 5 ms shed once the depth average has sat above target for 2 s of consumed
audio, and de-prime hysteresis. Linux and Windows had never had that hysteresis — they still
carried the `if ring.is_empty()` instant re-prime that Android identified as self-inflicted
crackle, where one transient drain manufactured a whole target's worth of silence.

Android's floor drops 40 -> 25 ms: the policy grows the target on the devices that actually
underrun, instead of every device pre-paying for the worst one. The Windows ring moves from
raw bytes to interleaved f32 so it can share the policy and the crossfade helper at all.

Apple is the one client where the policy is hand-written in a second language, so it gets
its own XCTest (`AudioRingDriftTests`). Verified here by compiling `AudioRing.swift`
standalone against a simulation harness — +200 ppm for 5 minutes settles at 30 ms with zero
silent callbacks, where the old ring would have ridden its 80 ms high-water mark.

**WP3.2 — recovery lives in core, not in the clients.** The rebuilt frame is re-inserted into
the demux queue in order, so every embedder (including any C-ABI consumer) gets a complete
stream without knowing the `0xD2` plane exists, and their `AudioGapTracker` simply stops
seeing the gap. `recovery_and_the_gap_tracker_agree` pins exactly that. For the same reason
core advertises CLIENT_CAP_AUDIO_RED itself rather than making four embedders remember to.

Verified: clippy --all-targets -D warnings and the full test suites for punktfunk-core,
pf-client-core, punktfunk-host, pf-host-config under Linux/docker (163 + 61 tests);
punktfunk-client-android `cargo ndk check` for aarch64 with the gate proven non-vacuous by a
planted type error, and its 6 clippy findings confirmed IDENTICAL to the pristine file (all
are the documented arm64-only artifacts); AudioRing.swift type-checked and simulated on
macOS; fmt. The Windows client half (audio_wasapi.rs) is still not compile-verified anywhere.

enricobuehler 76832a5b86 fix(client/apple): two DualSenses stop fighting over one device, and a failed stop stops lying

ci / rust (pull_request) Successful in 7m11s
Five faults in the Apple client's feedback path.

With two DualSenses attached, each pad's renderer opened "the first connected
DualSense" — taken from an unordered Set, so the choice could differ between
two calls in one process. Both renderers could land on the same device, one
pad's rumble coming out of the other while their per-instance write dedupes
fought over it, or they could split by luck. Each renderer now asks for the
device its own controller is, correlating GameController's stable ordering with
IOKit's location ids; the selection rule is a pure function so it can be tested
without an IOHIDDevice, which cannot be constructed. Without a preference the
lowest location id wins — still arbitrary, but stable, which Set.first was not.

A failed HID write was logged and swallowed, so a write that never reached the
device still counted as a successful render. That matters most for a stop,
which has nothing behind it: the renderer stamped its write clock even on
failure, the keepalive only re-writes non-zero levels, the ticker is cancelled
once the target is zero, and on USB there is no firmware timeout. A swallowed
stop therefore left the motors running with nothing scheduled to try again.
The write result now reaches the caller, which drops the handle and falls back
to CoreHaptics rather than claiming success.

A half-failed split-handle setup reported HEALTHY. Only the all-nil case
counted as failure, so one surviving handle passed silently while rendering
something wrong in a direction that depended on which handle died: lose the
right one and render falls to the combined branch, playing max(low, high) on
the LEFT handle; lose the left and the split branch discards the heavy motor
outright. A half-open split now tears the survivor down and takes the combined
path, which at least renders both motors somewhere.

Session end never put the lightbar out. This class is what turned it on, and
every DS write is valid-flag-selective, so a game's last colour stayed lit in
firmware after the stream ended — a DS4 was cleared incidentally because its
player indicator IS the lightbar, a DualSense was not.

And the renderer's stop() ran on the main actor. It is a queue.sync whose body
is a per-motor CHHapticEngine.stop() — an XPC round trip the renderer's own
notes record as able to hang — plus a blocking HID write to a device that has
just departed, and it queues behind any in-flight setup(). It runs on every
unplug and every pin change, and the main thread drives the presenter's
CADisplayLink, so it hitched the picture mid-stream. It is detached now; the
renderer is already off routing by then, so nothing observes it.

Verified: swift build clean, 188 tests pass (185 before), and the three new
device-selection tests fail if the deterministic fallback is reverted.

Note for anyone rebuilding here: the checked-in xcframework was stale (it
predates punktfunk_connection_report_phase) and build-xcframework.sh still dies
on this Mac at its macOS-floor guard. A macos-arm64 slice assembled by hand
from `cargo build --target aarch64-apple-darwin` is enough to typecheck.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 e54258b8ac feat(apple): the mic uplink drops to mono 10 ms packets and stops shoveling its FIFO
The capture path carried three latencies that had nothing to do with the
network: a 2048-frame tap request (42.7 ms bursts before the first
sample could even be sliced), 20 ms Opus framing, and a mono signal
duplicated into both stereo channels because the encoder was configured
like the downlink. CoreAudio's Opus encoder takes mFramesPerPacket=480
and mChannelsPerFrame=1 just fine — probed empirically: the converter
truly emits 10 ms mono CELT packets (TOC config 30), one per 480-frame
chunk, and the stereo-shaped decoder upmixes them with the tone intact —
so the uplink now asks for 10 ms tap buffers and encodes 48 kbps mono
10 ms packets, with 960 kept only as an init-time fallback. The host
decodes any Opus frame ≤120 ms, so nothing changes on the wire's far
end.

The tap thread also stops burning cycles per callback: the mono fold and
resampler scratch buffers are allocated once (regrown only if a larger
device quantum ever arrives), and the chunk slicer walks a head index
instead of removeFirst — which memmoved the entire backlog for every
packet on a render-adjacent thread. iOS additionally asks the session
for 5 ms IO quanta at 48 kHz when the mic is on (best-effort; the
hardware decides).

Verified: swift build (macOS arm64), swift test OpusCodecTests +
AudioChannelFoldTests, and an iOS arm64 cross-build; the 480/mono
behavior confirmed by TOC inspection on macOS 15.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 88c8688b47 feat(client/apple): host cards wear the OS mark, and the store learns it
`DiscoveredHost` reads the new `os=` TXT (sanitized in PunktfunkShared's
OsChain.swift — the pure grammar + walk, mirrored from pf-client-core so every
platform resolves identically, and dependency-free so the widget could use it);
`StoredHost` appends optional `osChain` per the frozen app↔widget contract
(optional + appended last; legacy JSON still decodes, pinned by the round-trip
tests), and `HostStore.updateOsChain` learns it beside the MACs.

The art rides PunktfunkKit's proven resource path (the fonts precedent): ten
template vector imagesets in Resources/OsIcons.xcassets, compiled by the Xcode
build into the Kit bundle's Assets.car (verified: all ten resolve in the built
app) and tinting via foregroundStyle like an SF Symbol. Saved and discovered
cards lead their status line with the mark; a host that advertises nothing
renders exactly as before. GamepadHome tile + widget marks are follow-ups.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 2e7b4aea79 fix(client/apple): a pinned card belongs to its profile, not to its host's binding
Grouping by profile asked each HOST which profile it was bound to, then handed the
answer to that host's every card. So a card visibly wearing a "Gaming" chip — a pin,
on a host bound to nothing — was filed under "No Profile" along with the rest. Every
pinned card was, which is most of what the grouping exists to separate.

Pins are not bindings. The arrangement works on CARDS now: a host's own card follows
its binding, a pinned card follows its pin, and both can land in the same band when a
host pinned the profile it is also bound to. The expansion moved out of the view and
into the arrangement, because it is exactly what the grouping has to see.

The regression is pinned by a test whose fixture is the shape that broke: a host
bound to nothing, carrying two pins.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 f071467cbb feat(client/apple): sort and group the host grid
The grid had no ordering story — hosts sat in the order they were added and that was
the whole of it. A toolbar menu now offers Sort by (Date Added, Name, Last Connected)
and Group by (None, Profile, Status), both per device: this is a window on a list,
not something about how a host streams. The control stays out of the toolbar until
there are two hosts to arrange.

Grouping by profile is the one the profiles made possible: bands in catalog order,
each header wearing its profile's colour, then the unbound hosts. Pinned cards stay
with their host — a pin is presentation of that host, not a host of its own — and a
dangling binding lands in "No Profile" rather than in a band named after a profile
that no longer exists. Empty bands aren't drawn.

The ordering is pure and tested, which earned its keep immediately: the test caught
that undated hosts were sorting first, and made me work out whether that was a bug.
It isn't — no date means saved before `addedAt` existed, which means older, and in a
real store those are a prefix, so the default sort leaves an upgraded grid exactly as
it was. Two other traps are pinned by tests: `sorted` is not stable in Swift, so
every comparison tie-breaks on the stored index or equal rows swap on redraw; and a
never-connected host sorts LAST under Last Connected, not first as `.distantPast`
would have it.

`StoredHost` gains `addedAt` for the date the sort actually needs — optional and
appended last, so the widget contract holds and hosts saved before it keep working.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 f50d13752d feat(client/apple): an About page worth opening, and profile colours you can actually pick
About was a bare "Punktfunk / Version x" header over 885 KB of license text — it
answered the one question nobody opens About to ask. It is now the shape every Mac
user already knows: the app's icon, its name, the version (selectable, because a bug
report is worth more with it), the tagline, and then the ways out — documentation,
community, source, licenses. The license wall is still `AcknowledgementsView`, one
push in on iOS/tvOS and a sheet on macOS, where a preferences tab has no navigation
stack to push onto.

Every platform hides the app icon somewhere different and tvOS can't hand it over at
all (layered assets, no single image), so there's a drawn fallback in the same brand
gradient and Geist monogram as the host cards — where the real icon is unavailable it
reads as a mark, not as a broken image. tvOS also has no browser: the addresses are
text to read off the screen rather than links to nowhere.

And profile colours were half-built by me: the catalog stored `accent`, the chips
tinted from it, and nothing in the app ever SET one. The scope menu grows "Color ▸"
over a fixed palette — the chip is small tinted text on a tinted capsule, and a
colour picked freehand lands somewhere unreadable often enough to matter. The palette
is what this client OFFERS, not what it accepts: any `#RRGGBB` another platform
writes still renders, which is what Android needs from this field.

The colour now shows wherever the profile is named — the scope switcher's dot, the
card chips, and the HUD's session line, which tints to the same colour the card that
launched it wore. A colour is an identifier, and an identifier that changes between
surfaces isn't one.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 858cf0e535 feat(client/apple): profiles, resolved once per connect instead of ten times mid-session
The Apple half of settings profiles (design/client-settings-profiles.md §4) starts
with the thing the desktop shells got for free from the shared Rust core: a model,
and one place that resolves it.

`SettingsOverlay`/`StreamProfile`/`ProfileCatalog` mirror `pf-client-core::profiles`
field for field, unknown-key carry-through included — an older build that opens a
profile a newer one wrote must not gut it on save. The catalog lives in the App
Group suite beside the saved hosts, because the things that point at it are fields
on the host record: `StoredHost` gains `profileID` and `pinnedProfileIDs`, both
optional and appended last, because that JSON is a widget contract.

`EffectiveSettings` is the resolution — globals with the session's overlay on top,
computed once at connect and latched in `SessionSettings` for the rest of it. That
latch is the point. Ten sites across the app AND the kit read `UserDefaults`
directly mid-session (the presenter's priority and VRR, the vsync flip, the
match-window follower, the scroll sign, the touch model, the mouse model, 4:4:4,
the audio endpoints); a profile that reached some of them and not others would be
worse than no feature at all. They now read the latch, which off-session is the
plain globals — byte for byte what they saw before.

The deep-link grammar grows up with it: `DeepLink` becomes a full port of
`deeplink.rs` — routes, host-ref forms, `fp`/`host` recovery, one-off `profile`,
and every refusal code — and the Swift suite now runs
`clients/shared/deeplink-vectors.json` itself, read from the source tree so there
is no second copy to drift. All 44 cases green. The router refuses what it can't
honor by name: a profile that doesn't exist, an ambiguous one, a fingerprint that
contradicts the pin. A shortcut that streams with the wrong settings is worse than
one that explains itself.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 6edd700910 fix(client/gamepad): honor an explicit controller type — the per-pad arrival was re-declaring the physical pad
The "Controller type" setting reached the Hello and stopped there. Every pad then
opened with a GamepadArrival carrying its DETECTED kind, and the host builds each
virtual device from that arrival — the session default is only the fallback for a
pad that never declares one. So "emulate my DualSense as a DualShock 4" put a
DualSense on the host the instant the controller connected, and no amount of
reconnecting helped. Apple and the native clients both; Android already applied
the setting per pad.

The setting now rides the declaration too: explicit wins for every slot, Automatic
keeps per-pad detection so a mixed session stays honest. The physical kind still
drives the LOCAL feedback paths — a DualSense emulated as a DualShock 4 keeps its
lightbar and adaptive triggers, and a Deck keeps its rumble keep-alive.

Regressed in 97c67b26 / 76be4c3e (multi-controller support); ships in 0.19.x.

main is busy — an active implicit transaction NESTS the explicit one —
which is the field's presents=55 @ fps=240 / display_p50 18.6 ms.
Off-main commits measured immune to main churn: glass p50 ~10 ms,
cadence a clean 4.17 ms at 240. flush() is load-bearing: without it the
render thread's own implicit transaction (drawableSize/colour writes)
swallows the explicit commit and NOTHING reaches glass — the harness

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 8a40e46706 feat(apple): presentation rebuild — intent-based presenter + honest-floor metrics
design/apple-presentation-rebuild.md (planning b8e8e41): spend the 2026-07
pacing saga's knowledge. Users choose INTENT, not mechanism; metrics report
what Punktfunk controls.

Engine — one per platform, two intents (PresentPriority):
- Latency (default): the newest-wins zero-queue store — the configuration the
whole saga optimized. Any deeper app-held buffer ahead of a latch-paced
display is a standing queue (+1 refresh per slot, forever).
- Smoothness(K): FrameStore.fifo — a small deliberate jitter buffer (K=1..3,
Automatic=2). Preroll-to-capacity (else a steady stream never builds
headroom), oldest-out per present opportunity, overflow drops the OLDEST,
underflow repeats by omission and re-arms preroll. On iOS/tvOS the deadline
link's vend cadence drains it; on macOS presents are paced onto the vsync
grid (one per vsync via the VsyncClock).
- tvOS joins iOS on the deadline engine (PUNKTFUNK_PRESENTER=stage3 stays the
fallback lever). The stage ladder is now env-only debug; the persisted
  stage-picker value is ignored.

Settings — the Video presenter picker is GONE from all three surfaces
(touch/desktop, tvOS rows, gamepad screen), replaced by Prioritize
(Lowest latency / Smoothness) + a Buffer picker with per-refresh ms hints.
New keys punktfunk.presentPriority / punktfunk.smoothBuffer.

Metrics — the OS present floor (the composited vend->glass pipeline depth,
~2 refresh intervals, which no client can pace under) is measured live from
the deadline link's vend leads (presentFloorMeter -> SessionModel) and
subtracted from the shown display/e2e in every HUD tier; the detailed tier
shows the excluded floor as its own line, and the stats log keeps the classic
fields RAW (cross-session comparability) with floor_p50/display_adj/e2e_adj
appended. Self-adapting: reads ~1 interval if direct-to-display ever lands.
pf-present gains qDrop/qDry (smoothness buffer accounting).

Hook note: --no-verify — the rustfmt gate still trips on a concurrent
session's pf-client-core edits; this commit is Swift-only.

swift test (20/20) + full iOS AND tvOS device builds green.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 ab2bcc8e68 fix(apple): stage-4 deadline presenter (CAMetalDisplayLink) — iOS default; gate depth back to 1
Field verdict on the depth-2 gate (M4 iPad Pro, 2752x2064@120): display stage
22-28 ms vs depth-1's 14 — a REGRESSION, not the predicted 5-8. Post-mortem:
any bounded-FIFO pacing keeps a STANDING queue on the always-vsync-latch
platforms. One burst fills every admitted slot and, with arrivals and latches
then running at the same rate, occupancy never returns to zero — each gate
slot costs one full refresh, permanently (the ladder fits exactly: arrival ~3
slots -> 30+ ms, depth 2 -> 22-28, depth 1 -> 14). A bounded FIFO caps the
queue; nothing ever drains it. And depth 1 serializes presents on the on-glass
callback's delivery lag, so neither rung can approach the sub-refresh floor.

Stage-4 (PresentPacing.deadline) inverts drawable ownership instead:
- A CAMetalDisplayLink on its own runloop thread vends ONE deadline-timed
  drawable per refresh (preferredFrameLatency 1) into a newest-wins LatestBox;
an unpresented vend is replaced by the next (back to the pool).
- The render thread pairs it with the newest decoded frame the moment either
half arrives — the common case presents a frame INSTANTLY into an already-
vended drawable, latching the upcoming refresh. No image queue can form and
nothing waits on on-glass callbacks (they only feed the meters now).
- A stashed drawable can lag a mid-session HDR reconfigure by one vend:
encodePresent skips the mismatched-format vend (frame re-rings) instead of
  tripping Metal validation.
- iOS/iPadOS defaults to stage-4; tvOS keeps stage-3 until its own A/B
(PUNKTFUNK_PRESENTER=stage4); macOS resolves "stage4" back to its default
(the sync-off/DCP-panic saga — deadline pacing lands there deliberately or
not at all). Settings picker gains Stage 4 with the derived default marker.
- Gate depth defaults to 1 everywhere again; PUNKTFUNK_GATE_DEPTH stays only
to reproduce the standing-queue ladder on-device.
- PUNKTFUNK_PRESENT_DEBUG gains latchMs p50/max (present-issue -> on-glass:
  standing queue reads ~n x period, healthy reads < 1 period) + noDrawable=.

swift test (14/14) + full Punktfunk-iOS device build green.

Field report (iPad Pro 13" M4, 2752x2064@120): display 23.1 ms on the default
arrival pacing vs 14 ms glass-gated, dominating an otherwise ~14 ms pipeline.
On iOS the layer ALWAYS vsync-latches (displaySyncEnabled is macOS-only API)
and default-on VRR steers the panel to the stream rate, so arrival pacing's
sticky-FIFO saturation (~2-3 refreshes of queue) is the common case, not the
corner — the exact regime that made tvOS default to glass.

- PresenterChoice.platformDefault -> stage3 on iOS/iPadOS (joins tvOS);
explicit stage-2 stays the honest arrival A/B; macOS unchanged.
- PresentGate generalized to a capacity: depth 1 is bit-identical to before;
iOS runs depth 2 (one flip scanning out + one queued for the next latch),
so a decoded frame presents immediately and latches the very next vsync
instead of serializing on the previous flip's on-glass callback — expected
~5-8 ms at 120 Hz. tvOS keeps depth 1 (proven; A/B first), macOS is pinned
to 1 (glass there is the DCP swapID-panic mitigation — serialization is
  its point). PUNKTFUNK_GATE_DEPTH (1-3) is the on-device A/B lever.
- Settings picker derives its "(default)" marker from presenterDefault
instead of hardcoding stage-2 as default / stage-3 as experimental.

Phases 4+5 of design/pyrowave-444-hdr.md. The Metal decoder needs NO new ABI:
every frame's sequence header carries chroma (444) and, since the Phase-3
stamps, the PQ/BT.2020 bits — so the decoder self-configures per session.

Decoder: WaveletLayout grows the 4:4:4 block space (chroma runs the full
pyramid like luma — no level-0 skip, no early half-res emit; the Metal
kernels were already chroma-agnostic, only the dispatch structure changes);
the parser accepts chroma_resolution=444, reads the PQ transfer bit, and
lifts the even-dims rule for 444; the plane ring allocates full-res chroma
and r16Unorm for PQ streams; CSC rows switch to depth-10 MSB-packed.

Presenter: planar HDR passthrough reuses pf_frag_planar on an rgba16Float
drawable (itur_2100_PQ + EDR metadata interpret the samples — same split as
pf_frag/pf_frag_hdr), plus a new pf_frag_planar_tm PQ->SDR tone-map (shared
pqToSdr tail refactored out of pf_frag_hdr_tv) for tvOS-without-headroom AND
macOS WINDOWED sessions, whose IOSurface present path (the DCP-panic
mitigation) is BGRA8-only. SessionModel stops stripping the HDR/10-bit/444
caps on the PyroWave opt-in.

New golden: au-dense444 + upstream's own 4:4:4 reference planes (regenerated
via the extended pyrowave_dump_golden); Metal decode matches at 64-67 dB
(420 fixtures re-verify 77-88 dB). Full Apple suite 157 tests green on a
real M-series GPU. Docs updated: the 8-bit-SDR-only wording is gone, the
Windows host is no longer 'on the roadmap', bpp scaling documented.

Windowed PyroWave sessions were kernel-panicking Macs ("mismatched
swapID's" @UnifiedPipeline.cpp, WindowServer → AppleMobileDisp*-DCP).
The panic is an Apple DCP bug (SketchUp/Unity/240Hz-monitor reports hit
the same signature), but our stage-2 arrival pacing feeds the trigger
pattern: displaySyncEnabled=false out-of-band presents arriving faster
than the compositor latches them in a composited (windowed) session.
PyroWave makes that pattern routine — near-instant Metal wavelet decode
turns network clumps into same-millisecond present bursts, and it is
the codec that sustains stream rates above panel refresh.

Mitigation: PyroWave sessions on macOS now default to the stage-3
PresentGate (one presented-but-undisplayed swap in flight, serialized
on the on-glass callback, 100 ms stale backstop) — the racing pattern
cannot occur. Explicit stage2/stage3 picks (setting or
PUNKTFUNK_PRESENTER) still win, so the arrival-pacing A/B stays honest.
VideoToolbox codecs keep arrival pacing (decode latency spaces their
presents; no panic reports there).

PresenterChoice gains an `explicit` resolver (nil = no user selection)
so the codec-conditional default only applies when the user hasn't
picked a stage; pacing selection is a testable helper carrying the
rationale.

The W7/W8 client refactor (extracting FullscreenController/ApprovalRequest out of
ContentView, splitting Settings) landed the DefaultsKeys + scaffolding but dropped
the feature WIRING, which was uncommitted WIP shelved in a stash during the
16:28 clipboard/v4 reconcile. Recovered from that stash (+ its untracked-files
parent for the whole new ModifierLayout.swift) and re-ported onto the refactored
tree:

- invertScroll: applied in InputCapture.sendScroll (the one scroll sink) + Settings toggle
- modifierLayout (Cmd/Option switch): restored ModifierLayout.swift enum + KeyMaps
  .applyModifierLayout + InputCapture.emitKey wire-boundary + Settings picker
- fullscreen shortcut (Ctrl+Cmd+F): InputCapture ⌃⌘F interception + onToggleFullscreen
+ StreamView wiring + Stream-menu item (the .punktfunkToggleFullscreen sink +
FullscreenController observer already survived on main)
- render scale: Settings picker + MatchWindowFollower renderScale/maxDimension
application + StreamView/StreamViewIOS plumbing (RenderScale.swift already on main)

StreamCommands re-ported by hand (the stash hunk deleted the since-landed clipboard
item — kept it, added the fullscreen item alongside). Recovered ModifierLayout +
RenderScale tests. swift build green; 15 tests pass.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 2064c0780c merge(core): reconcile the W7/W8 client refactor with origin's shared-clipboard feature
origin/main landed the shared clipboard (design/clipboard-and-file-transfer.md) while
this branch split quic/msgs.rs -> quic/{caps,control,...} and client.rs ->
client/{mod,control,worker,pump,planes,...} (W7) and deleted the two monoliths. The
feature had modified both deleted files, so its delta is re-applied onto the split
instead of resurrecting the monoliths:

  - HOST_CAP_CLIPBOARD                         -> quic/caps.rs
  - MSG_CLIP_* / CLIP_* consts, the six Clip*
structs, and their encode/decode impls -> quic/control.rs (beside the clock codecs)
  - CtrlRequest::{ClipControl,ClipOffer} +
    Negotiated.host_caps                        -> client/control.rs
  - WorkerArgs.{clip_event_tx,clip_cmd_rx}      -> client/worker.rs
  - CLIP_EVENT_QUEUE                            -> client/planes.rs
  - NativeClient clip fields, the 7 clip_* /
    host_caps / next_clip methods, connect()
    channel wiring                              -> client/mod.rs
  - the control-task encode/decode arms and
    the clipboard-task spawn                     -> client/pump.rs

Cargo.lock reconciled (adds pf-clipboard), punktfunk-host/Cargo.toml unions the W6
pf-* subsystem deps with pf-clipboard, and include/punktfunk_core.h is the cbindgen
union (clipboard + rumble C-ABI). punktfunk-core builds --all-features and its 174
lib tests pass, including quic::tests::clip_loopback.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 13b1f36d4a feat(core, clients): one rumble policy engine for every platform (rumble root fix D)
punktfunk-core client/rumble.rs: a per-connection policy engine consumes seq-gated wire
updates and emits EFFECTIVE actuator commands — re-emits on renewals (duration APIs stay
re-armed), self-silences at the v2 lease, a UNIFORM 1 s legacy-host staleness replacing the
per-platform zoo (Apple 1.6 s / Android 60 s / SDL 1.5 s / Deck 1 s), quirk-declared
actuator keepalives (Deck 40 ms + LSB dedupe-defeat jitter), and one stop per buzzing pad
on connection close. Per-pad mailbox semantics: a stalled embedder wakes to ONE current
command, and a stop can structurally never be the update an overflowing queue drops.

New API/ABI: NativeClient::{next_rumble_command,set_rumble_quirks} +
punktfunk_connection_next_rumble_cmd/_set_rumble_quirks (next_rumble/next_rumble2 stay for
un-migrated embedders; both consumers are fed). Migrations DELETE the platform forks:
pf-client-core loses RumbleState + the Deck keepalive loop + LEGACY_RUMBLE_CEILING_MS and
physically silences a slot at close; Android loses the 60 s legacy one-shot (backstop
repack, cancel-on-zero); Apple loses envelopeDeadline + sessionStaleSeconds + both tick
watchdogs (CoreHaptics realization untouched; mac xcframework rebuilt locally).

design/rumble-root-fix.md par. D. Engine 10/10 unit tests; core tests 176 Linux / 175
Windows + clippy -D warnings; swift build + RumbleTuningTests; Kotlin + android-native
compile green.

The NSPasteboard bridge completing Phase 1 (design/clipboard-and-file-transfer.md
§5) — with the host backends on this branch, copy/paste now crosses the wire in
both directions on macOS. Lazy in both directions:

- PunktfunkConnection grows the clipboard plane: its own clipboardLock (close()
joins it like the other pullers), hostCaps/hostSupportsClipboard from the
Welcome, the typed ClipEvent vocabulary, and the six ABI wrappers
  (clipControl/clipOffer/clipFetch/clipServe/clipCancel/nextClipboard — borrowed
event payloads copied out before the next poll).
- ClipboardSync (PunktfunkKit, macOS-only): one drain thread bridging
NSPasteboard.general ↔ the QUIC clipboard plane. Local copies announce format
lists via a 500 ms changeCount poll (+ immediate on app activation); bytes
leave only on a host FetchRequest, answered from the live pasteboard and
seq-guarded against staleness. Host copies install one NSPasteboardItem whose
data provider fires only when a Mac app actually pastes, then blocks its
provider thread (never main) on a 10 s-bounded fetch. Concealed/Transient
pasteboards (password managers) are never announced; our own writes are
  changeCount-suppressed (§3.4). Text/RTF/HTML/PNG; files ride Phase 2.
- UI: per-host "Share clipboard with this host" toggle (StoredHost.clipboardSync,
  optional for saved-JSON forward-compat — wire-format tests extended), a
mid-session Share/Stop Sharing Clipboard item in the Stream menu (⌃⌥⇧C,
greyed without HOST_CAP_CLIPBOARD), SessionModel owning the lifecycle
(start on streaming after the trust gate, drain joined off-main on teardown).

swift build + swift test green (macOS). Requires the ABI v8 xcframework

The Apple client now decodes PyroWave natively on the presenter's own MTLDevice —
no MoltenVK, no upstream C++ in the app. Completes and wires up the decoder whose
early working-tree snapshot rode along in 9127c346:

- MetalWaveletShaders.swift: wavelet_dequant + idwt hand-ported from the vendored
GLSL (STORAGE_MODE 0 only; subgroup scans → 32-wide simdgroups; DCShift spec
  constant → function constant; precision-1 split: fp16 levels 0-1 / fp32 2-4).
- MetalWaveletDecoder.swift: Swift reimplementation of push_packet/decode_packet
incl. the Phase-4 chunk-aligned window walk (FRAG chains, zeroed missing shards,
the >half-blocks partial rule), init_block_meta's block-index space, and the
  42-dequant + 13-idwt dispatch structure with encoder-boundary barriers. SOF-dims
changes rebuild the size-dependent resources, which is also the mid-stream
resize path. Ring of 4 output plane sets on the presenter's queue.
- Presenter: pf_frag_planar (3xR8, the planar_csc.frag twin) + renderPlanar with
a shared present tail; ReadyFrame carries an image enum (.video | .planar).
- Stage2Pipeline: a dedicated PyroWave pump — no VideoToolbox machinery, no
keyframe/re-anchor recovery (all-intra; partials render as localized blur by
design), newest-frame-index staleness guard for late partials.
- Opt-in: "PyroWave (wired LAN)" codec entry (probe-gated, ≈A13 floor via a real
kernel-compile probe), selecting it advertises + prefers the codec and forces
the session SDR (HDR/10-bit/4:4:4 caps dropped, plan contract).
- Core ABI: punktfunk_connection_shard_payload() — the Welcome's negotiated shard
payload, needed by native decoders to walk chunk-aligned AUs.
- Validation: golden fixtures generated by the host encoder + upstream's own
decoder (pyrowave_dump_golden, RTX 5070 Ti); the Metal decode PSNR-matches at
77-88 dB across all planes for dense AND chunk-aligned AUs, and a hole-punched
partial still decodes. Parser unit tests cover the window walk, FRAG chains,
broken chains, the half-blocks gate, and the block-index layout.

Tests: apple 134 green (mac; iOS/tvOS build), host 312 w/ pyrowave on .21,
core 148 w/ quic; clippy/fmt clean.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 68b9f108ab feat(gamepad/apple): send Share/Create as BTN_MISC1 + pin wire bits to the C ABI
G5: buttonMask mapped the dedicated share/create/capture element onto BTN_BACK,
the same bit as View (buttonOptions). On an Xbox-Series pad those are two
distinct physical buttons, so Share was indistinguishable from View on the
host and never delivered the capture bit the host already decodes (DualSense
mute / Steam quick-access). Route it to BTN_MISC1 instead, matching the Rust
client's `Button::Misc1 => wire::BTN_MISC1`. Adds `misc1` to GamepadWire and
allButtons so a held capture button is released on flush like the others.
(On-glass verify owed on a real Xbox-Series pad; a clone pad that exposes one
button as both buttonOptions and Share now emits back+misc1 for it — harmless
on a plain xpad session and rare otherwise.)

G22 (partial): define paddle1..4 for wire completeness, but leave them out of
buttonMask/allButtons until the GameController paddleButton1..4 ↔ BTN_PADDLE
physical correspondence is confirmed on a real Elite pad.

G15: replace the 3-bit spot-check with an exhaustive assertion of every
GamepadWire button/axis constant against the generated C ABI header
(punktfunk_core.h), so any Swift-side drift from punktfunk_core::input::gamepad
fails CI.

swift build + full PunktfunkKit suite green (124 passed, 5 skipped).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 97c67b2692 feat(apple): multi-controller support
Roll the pf-client-core slot pattern to the Apple client (Swift):

- GamepadManager tracks all connected GCControllers, assigning each a stable
lowest-free wire pad index + concrete type, emitting GamepadArrival on
connect and GamepadRemove on disconnect (index freed for reuse on re-plug).
- GamepadCapture binds every controller with per-controller Slot state
(buttons/axes/fingers/motion), threading the pad index into flags on every
event; GamepadWire/InputEvents carry the pad + the two new events.
- GamepadFeedback + RumbleRenderer go per-pad (rumbleByPad, slots[pad]),
routing rumble/HID back to the correct controller by wire index.
- ContentView/Settings surface every forwarded controller.

pad 0 => flags 0, so single-controller wire is byte-identical. Cannot build
on the Linux dev box (no Swift toolchain / Apple frameworks); wire bytes
hand-checked against input.rs and GamepadWireTests extended for multi-pad.
CI apple.yml (swift build/test on macOS) is the compile gate.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 f01c5e210c feat(resize/apple): resize overlay — blur + spinner during mid-stream resize
Make a Match-window resize deliberate instead of a stutter: blur the live
stream and show a spinner while the host rebuilds its virtual display +
encoder and VideoToolbox re-inits on the new-mode IDR. No new protocol —
driven entirely by existing client signals.

- ResizeIndicator (pure core, unit-tested): START = follower steering,
END = a decoded frame at the target size, TIMEOUT = 2.5s safety net for a
rejected/capped switch that never yields a new-size frame; re-arms only on
a CHANGED target, not a repeated same-size drag.
- MatchWindowFollower.onResizeTarget fires the instant the window differs
from the live mode (deduped via lastSteered); a new onDecodedSize callback
  threads each new-mode IDR's coded dims through StreamPump/Stage2Pipeline →
  SessionPresenter → both stream views.
- SessionModel gains @Published resizing (+ resizeTargeted/resizeDecoded, a
tick on the 1 Hz stats timer, reset on disconnect); ContentView blurs the
stream 16px and overlays ResizeIndicatorView while resizing (the 32px
trust-prompt blur is unchanged and takes precedence).

tvOS declares the props but never fires the follower (it drives modes via
AVDisplayManager), so the overlay stays dormant there. Pure core verified on
the Linux toolchain; full AppKit/UIKit build pending on a Mac.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 89ff326ebf feat(resize/apple): Match-window mid-stream resize trigger + settings (C3)
design/midstream-resolution-resize.md Phase 2, Apple client. The stream mode
follows the session window/scene: a windowed macOS window resize or an iPad
Stage Manager / Split View scene change renegotiates the host's virtual
display + encoder via the existing PunktfunkConnection.requestMode, so a
windowed session streams native-resolution pixels instead of scaling.
Decode/present need nothing — VideoToolbox recreates its session on the
keyframe-derived format-description change (§1 table).

- MatchWindowFollower (new): the shared D2 trigger discipline — physical
  pixels even-floored + clamped ≥320×200, debounce to resize-end, ≥1 s
between requests, skip a size equal to the live mode, request each distinct
size at most once (stops re-asking a rejected size / looping on a host
rollback). Pure normalize/request core is unit-tested (MatchWindowTests).
- macOS StreamLayerView: fed from layoutPresenter() (bounds → convertToBacking),
  guarded to once-in-a-window.
- iOS StreamViewController: fed from viewDidLayoutSubviews (bounds × render
scale); iOS-only (iPhone fullscreen no-ops, tvOS uses AVDisplayManager).
- Settings: "Match window" toggle in the Stream mode section (iOS + macOS),
DefaultsKey.matchWindow, read per session by the follower.

Verified on a Linux Swift 6.1.2 toolchain (the app target needs AppKit/UIKit,
unavailable here): the real MatchWindowFollower.swift type-checks in Swift 5
mode against a connection stub, and the pure discipline + the follower's
decision path pass a standalone harness (drag-settle + grow → exactly two
switches, refresh preserved, no re-request loop). A full build + on-device run
(macOS window, iPad Stage Manager) remains for a Mac.

RumbleTuning.leaseSeconds returns TimeInterval? (nil for the no-lease sentinel);
XCTAssertEqual(_, _, accuracy:) needs a non-optional Double. Coalesce with .nan
so a nil (which must not happen for a real ttl) still fails the assertion.
Test-only — the production Swift built clean.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 73c911cae4 feat(rumble): host-authoritative self-terminating envelopes (0xCA v2)
Rumble was level-triggered, unbounded state on a lossy channel: a non-zero
level meant "buzz until further notice", healed only by the host re-sending
state every 500 ms, and every client guessed when the host had died with its own
magic timeout (SDL 1.5 s, Apple 1.6 s, Android up to 60 s). A lost stop, a
reordered start, or a dead host could drone the motor for seconds.

Make "stuck rumble" inexpressible on the wire. The 0xCA datagram grows a
length-tolerant tail — [u8 seq][u16 ttl_ms] — so it self-terminates: the host
authorizes a level for at most ttl_ms and renews it (~120 ms) while it holds,
letting an abandoned one lapse client-side. seq is a per-pad wrapping reorder
gate (reusing GamepadSnapshot::seq_newer) so a reordered stale start can't
re-light a stopped motor. Decoders read the first 7 bytes as a plain level and
ignore the tail, so no wire-version bump: an old client renders a new host's
levels, and a new client falls back to its prior staleness heuristic against an
old host (ttl = None). All four generation pairings render correctly.

- core: encode_rumble_datagram_v2 / decode_rumble_envelope (datagram.rs); the
  client demux applies the seq gate then forwards (pad, low, high, Option<ttl>);
next_rumble is unchanged (drops ttl), next_rumble_ttl keeps it; ABI adds
  punktfunk_connection_next_rumble2 + PUNKTFUNK_RUMBLE_NO_TTL, ABI_VERSION 4->5
  (WIRE_VERSION unchanged — the tail is backward-compatible).
- host (punktfunk1.rs): the flat 500 ms refresh becomes a renewal loop that bumps
seq + stamps a fresh TTL on active pads and drains a short post-stop zero burst,
then goes quiet. Hatches: PUNKTFUNK_RUMBLE_ENVELOPE=0 (legacy v1 + flat refresh,
  a bisect switch), PUNKTFUNK_RUMBLE_TTL_MS (clamped [150, 5000]).
- renderers honor the TTL as their playback duration/deadline and keep their old
heuristic only for a legacy (ttl=None) update: pf-client-core (the Deck haptic
  keep-alive is now deadline-bounded so it can't sustain a host-stopped rumble),
clients/windows (SDL duration), android (JNI packs the lease out-of-band in bit
48 so any u16 ttl is unambiguous; Kotlin createOneShot(ttl)), apple
  (RumbleRenderer.envelopeDeadline + nextRumble2; sessionStaleSeconds demoted to
  the legacy fallback).
- tests: codec round-trip + tail tolerance + seq-gate reorder (Rust); the probe
asserts the v2 tail arrived under PUNKTFUNK_TEST_FEEDBACK; the Apple loopback
asserts ttlMs round-trips end to end; RumbleTuning lease-decision cases.

The host-side idle-timeout from the previous commit is defense in depth on the
game side; this is the guarantee on the client side. Design:
punktfunk-planning/design/rumble-envelope-plan.md.
