Settings had been growing by knobs that ask players to understand the machinery: a limit under Automatic bitrate, remembered per-host rates, a mode that changed itself. Each was permanent surface on every client for a problem one link or device had.

docs/settings.md makes the bar explicit. Make it automatic, follow the OS, or fix the detection first; a new player setting needs the maintainer's yes, and Automatic stays automatic. AGENTS.md points agents at it before they add one.
