main moved 93 commits while this branch ran. Two conflicts, both where main's new
work sat next to M10's excision:
packaging/flatpak/io.unom.Punktfunk.yml — main added the vendored gamescope WSI
layer (the only route to HDR on a Deck) and, before it, a vulkan-headers module.
Took both: this branch predates them and deletes neither. But the headers module's
stated consumer was pf-ffvk's bindgen over FFmpeg's hwcontext_vulkan.h, and M10
deleted pf-ffvk — so it now reads as dead weight to the next person. It is not:
the WSI layer IS a Vulkan layer, compiles against those headers, and builds after
it, so module order is the dependency. Rewrote the rationale to say so, including
why dropping it would be expensive to discover — flatpak.yml has no pull_request:
trigger, so a manifest break reaches main invisibly and a tag then ships no Linux
flatpak. Also recorded that the native decoder needs nothing from there: pf-vkdecode
reaches Vulkan through ash, which is pure Rust bindings, no bindgen, no C headers.
crates/pf-console-ui/src/screens/settings.rs — main restructured the gamepad
settings into TABS, which removed the per-row section headers; this branch had left
Some("Video") untouched from the merge base and added the pre-M10 decoder migration
next to it. Git could not tell those apart. Took main's structure (no header, its
deliberate change) with this branch's migration layered on: a stored `vulkan`,
`vaapi` or `d3d11va` names no preset in the tabbed list and would render as "—",
then silently rewrite the user's preference on the next save.
Gates on the merged tree, Linux container: fmt clean; cargo check --workspace
--all-targets clean; clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings clean; tests
green across pf-vkdecode (187), pf-client-core (163), pf-console-ui (58) and
punktfunk-host (447 of 448 — the one failure is the pre-existing
gamestream::stream::tests::sender_delivers_batches, a UDP-loopback EINTR under
qemu that fails identically on a pristine HEAD).

feat: M10 — FFmpeg is gone from the client
cargo tree -p punktfunk-client-session finds no ffmpeg. The host still does, which is the whole point: pf-encode keeps libavcodec unconditionally and no host workflow, packaging script or licence file was touched. Deleted: crates/pf-ffvk, video_vulkan.rs, video_vaapi.rs, video_libav.rs, the libavcodec half of video_d3d11.rs, the av_log machinery, ffmpeg::codec::Id as the decoder's vocabulary (the quic CODEC_* wire constants now serve, which is why the evidence table was keyed on them), DecodedImage::VkFrame and ::Dmabuf, the presenter's AVVkFrame lane, and the ffmpeg-fallback feature with everything behind it. DrmFrameGuard collapses from an enum to a newtype, which removes an unsafe impl Send. Roughly 25,000 lines. Then the CI, packaging, licensing and docs work the plan's §6 lists: the Windows workflows lose FFMPEG_DIR, PF_FFVK_VULKAN_INCLUDE and their PATH prepend; the MSIX loses its DLL wildcard; the client .deb stops emitting libav sonames on its own because depends come from dpkg-shlibdeps; arch, flatpak and nix drop the dependency; and the README's "FFmpeg 7 or 8" contract narrows to the host. Three defects reached users' machines in the first cut, and none was in the deletion itself. All three desktop Settings UIs offer vulkan, vaapi and d3d11va as stored decoder values, so those strings sit in shipped settings files today. Refusing them by name — which is the correct rule for a stale pin — would have bricked every upgraded client whose owner ever touched that dropdown. They now migrate onto the native rung for the same hardware family, at decoder construction AND at each dialog's lookup, because a legacy value that matches no preset displays as "Automatic" and silently rewrites the user's preference on the next save. M9's evidence filter was deleted on the argument that with no libavcodec twin below, barring an unproven rung removes hardware decode rather than moving down one rung. That is true on Windows and false on Linux for Intel and every unknown vendor id, where prefer_vulkan_first is false and the order is native-vaapi → native-vk: a rung that has decoded nothing anywhere sitting above one that is 250/250 on three drivers. Every Intel Linux desktop would have moved from libavcodec VAAPI, shipping for years, onto pf-vaadec by default — and a rung that constructs and then produces wrong pixels leaves only by the error-streak demotion, which this codebase already documents as not tripping on the B580's strobing. The filter is restored as a narrow, pure, testable rule: an unproven rung yields to a proven one, and to nothing else. Windows deliberately passes no rung below, because that vendor family is the one with a measured wrong-pixel report against Vulkan decode, and trading no evidence for evidence of corruption is the wrong direction. And the notices still said FFmpeg was bundled. The root file is what both desktop clients include_str! and what the MSIX ships, three lines under the new card saying no FFmpeg is bundled; Apple's Acknowledgements said it too, on iOS, tvOS and macOS. The generator now emits four per-client files scoped by transitive closure — 0 FFmpeg mentions in each, verified — while the root file keeps it for the host. That also ends the standing false attribution of ffmpeg-next, GTK4, windows-rs and the NVENC SDK to an iPhone. Windows has no reachable box, so it was compiled instead: a cross clippy at -D warnings on x86_64 and aarch64-pc-windows-msvc with the C toolchain stubbed so build scripts run without linking. That gate immediately caught an include_str! path one directory too deep, which nothing else could have. Gates: container clippy -D warnings, 160 tests, workspace check, both Windows targets clean, client ffmpeg count 0 and host 2. The four decode crates are untouched, so the hardware rungs' 250/250 stands. ⚠ Owed and unrun: no GPU has executed any of this milestone. M8's on-glass software check, M7's D3D11 and VAAPI AV1 hardware legs, and M9's field bake all still want hardware, and the bake window and criteria remain the user's. |

fix(web/plugins): a plugin's interface loads again, instead of an empty panel

Two separate things had to be wrong for this, and both were. The frame's own policy locked it out. Plugin UIs moved to their own origin so a plugin cannot act as the logged-in operator, and the plugin origin names the console as the only page allowed to frame it. It built that name from the incoming request — but Nitro hands the app a synthetic request with no TLS socket, so an HTTPS console reads back as `http:`. The header said `frame-ancestors http://host:47992` while the operator was on `https://host:47992`, and the browser refused the frame outright (ERR_BLOCKED_BY_RESPONSE). Nothing on screen said so; the reason was only in devtools. The scheme now comes from the listener's own TLS state, stamped at bind time, with x-forwarded-proto winning when something in front terminated TLS for us — the one case where the browser's scheme is not ours. And the port was shut. 47993 was added to the firewall definitions, but an already-open firewall does not pick a new port up: ufw expands an app profile into rules when you allow it and keeps those, so editing the profile on upgrade changes nothing, and firewalld needs a reload. Every upgraded Linux host kept a 47992-only rule, silently. The packages now notice on upgrade and print the one command that fixes it, without touching the running firewall. The NixOS module and the container image never learned the port at all; both now open it. Also: the console no longer mounts the frame while it is still checking whether that origin is reachable. A firewalled port drops rather than refuses, so the check hangs for the browser's whole connect timeout, and mounting meanwhile is exactly the empty panel with no explanation. The card that follows now names both causes it can be — an untrusted certificate for that port, or a closed one — because from a browser the two are indistinguishable. The rule is now a pure function with tests, since its failure mode is a well-formed header that only a browser rejects. Verified on glass against home-worker-5 (.21) and its ROM Manager plugin: the frame was refused before, renders the plugin's UI after. |

Field report (RX 5700 / SteamOS): 10-bit HEVC "unsupported" — but the GPU was
never the blocker (RADV probed Main10 fine on that box). The session stayed SDR
because stock gamescope offers no 10-bit PQ capture formats and nothing shipped
our pipewire-hdr build outside the Bazzite sysext, while PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR
additionally defaulted off everywhere. Close all three gaps:
- PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR now defaults ON (explicit-off grammar, the flip the
config comment planned post-canary). Safe by construction: the +pfhdr banner
probe, managed-spawn term, and client 10-bit cap keep stock-gamescope boxes on
the exact 8-bit path. The nix module's gamescopeHdr (default true now) only
controls whether the patched binary is on PATH; it no longer sets the env.
- SteamOS: new scripts/steamdeck/build-gamescope.sh builds the HDR gamescope in
the same pf2 trixie distrobox (apt dep list validated by a full build in a
debian:trixie container), installs ~/.local/bin/punktfunk-gamescope, and
maintains PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_BIN in host.env ONLY while the binary passes its
on-glass --version/+pfhdr check — a stale absolute override would break
session spawning, not just HDR. Wired into install.sh (§3b), update.sh
(retrofit), and rebuild-check.sh (ldd-probes it like the host binary).
- Arch: build-sysext.sh gains a --gamescope fold-in (banner-verified by
execution, host-image-only), and punktfunk-host optdepends the companion.
Deliberately NO CI-published host sysext: per the 2026-07-22 packaging
verdict a prebuilt SteamOS host breaks on A/B soname bumps (and /var is
per-partition-set), so arch.yml records that instead — SteamOS hosts use the
distrobox flow above.
Also fixes a latent bug that made build-sysext.sh fail every invocation as
documented: a literal `}` inside `${1:?usage …{host,client}…}` terminates the
expansion early and corrupts $PKG (caught by the new synthetic-package test,
which also covers the fold-in, the unmarked-gamescope refusal, and the
client-image guard).

feat(client/linux): the app icon reaches About — and the launcher, which never had it either
Adding the icon to the About dialog turned out to be one line and a missing install: the icon existed, but only the flatpak ever shipped it. The deb, rpm, arch and nix entries all carried `Icon=video-display` — a stock monitor glyph — so on every non-flatpak install the launcher, the taskbar and the window switcher have been showing a generic icon this whole time. About would have shown the same nothing. So the icon moves out of `packaging/flatpak/` into `packaging/linux/icons/hicolor/` beside the tray icons, which is where a shared asset belongs, and all five packagings install it to the same hicolor path. The desktop entry names the app's own icon, and `AboutDialog` names the app id — one identity resolved through the icon theme rather than a path anyone has to keep in step. A `PUNKTFUNK_SHOT_SCENE=about` scene comes along so the dialog is capturable like every other surface; that is how the icon above was verified to actually resolve rather than silently falling back. The rest of C1. A CLI that only exists in a dev tree is not a door anyone can use, so it now builds and installs in deb, rpm, arch, nix, flatpak and MSIX alongside the client and the session. On Windows it gets its own `AppListEntry="none"` application with the alias `punktfunk.exe` — a command, not a Start-menu tile — which is what the Playnite importer will shell to for `punktfunk library <host> --json`. `punktfunk-session --pair` prints a deprecation notice and forwards. Pairing is a trust ceremony and belongs to the brain, fronted by `punktfunk pair` or a shell; a renderer owning one is precisely the mixing of concerns this split exists to undo. It keeps working for a release, because someone's provisioning script is calling it today. Decky's invocations are untouched and verified still working (`--list-hosts` JSON shape unchanged, `--reachable` exit codes unchanged): those flags are a frozen compat contract until Decky migrates to the verbs at its own pace. fix(packaging): every channel that ships punktfunk-gamescope now builds it
The docs already told users where to get it — the Bazzite sysext, an Arch package, a NixOS option — and none of the three were true. `rpm.yml` built the sysext without ever passing `--gamescope`, `arch.yml` did not know the PKGBUILD existed, and the nix derivation had never been evaluated once. Evaluating it found its central assumption wrong: `gamescope.unwrapped` does not exist on current nixpkgs, where `gamescope` IS the buildable derivation, so the override threw on every build. It now prefers `.unwrapped` where a future nixpkgs wraps it and checks the RESULT is patchable — `overrideAttrs` on a symlinkJoin succeeds and does nothing, which would install an UNPATCHED gamescope under a name the host reads as a promise of HDR. Both it and the PKGBUILD had also drifted to a stale patch list: two patches named where three exist, one of them under the level-1 filename retired when the cursor patch landed. Both read the patch directory now, so the list cannot go stale again. The PKGBUILD additionally delegates the whole build to `build-punktfunk-gamescope.sh` rather than re-deriving the meson invocation — its copy had already lost `force_fallback_for=wlroots`, and unlike Fedora 43, Arch ships wlroots, so that package would have linked it shared and shipped a binary that starts only on machines carrying the dev library. It asserts its own pinned rev matches the script's, the one thing makepkg needs statically. Both CI builds are cached on `packaging/gamescope/**`, which is the only reason this is affordable: that tree depends on nothing else in the repo, so a normal push restores a binary instead of spending ten minutes on someone else's C++. And both are best-effort. punktfunk works without this binary — SDR on the gamescope backend, which is what every release before this one did — so a hiccup building gamescope must not cost the packages those workflows exist to publish. A failure warns and is never cached, so the next run retries. `rpm.yml` also installs Fedora's own gamescope for its runtime libraries: the sysext verifies our binary by executing `--version`, and on a cache hit nothing else in the job would have pulled libavif/luajit/seatd in. Verified by evaluating and patch-phase-building the nix derivation against nixos-unstable: all three patches apply to nixpkgs' already-patched 3.16.25 tree, and the banner stamps +pfhdr2. feat(gamescope): a build of gamescope whose capture output can be HDR
gamescope's built-in PipeWire node has always been SDR-only: it offers BGRx and NV12, and `paint_pipewire()` hardcodes a Gamma-2.2 composite with the SDR screenshot LUT set. So an HDR game reaches punktfunk already tone-mapped down, and the whole gamescope backend streams 8-bit no matter what the client can decode. Games CAN render HDR on a headless gamescope today — only the capture half is missing. Carry the two patches that close it (packaging/gamescope/patches): the node additionally offers `xRGB_210LE`/`xBGR_210LE` with MANDATORY SMPTE ST.2084 + BT.2020 props, mapped to the same 10-bit capture texture the HDR AVIF screenshot path already allocates, and `paint_pipewire()` composites into them with the HDR screenshot LUTs + `EOTF_PQ` — which is exactly the in-tree `bHDRScreenshot` branch. The new formats are listed LAST, so every existing consumer keeps negotiating the 8-bit stream bit-for-bit. Offered upstream against ValveSoftware/gamescope#2126. Ship it as `punktfunk-gamescope`, beside the distro's own binary rather than replacing it: a Bazzite sysext payload (`build-sysext.sh --gamescope`, which refuses a binary without the marker), an Arch package, a nix derivation + `services.punktfunk.host.gamescopeHdr`, and one distro-agnostic build script the rest call. The second patch stamps `+pfhdr1` into the `--version` banner. That is not cosmetic: punktfunk fixes a session's bit depth in the Welcome, before the display exists and with no way to take it back, so its capability answer has to be a static property of the binary it will spawn. |

fix(packaging/tray): the .deb must build the tray in its own cargo invocation
punktfunk-tray panicked at every launch on Debian/Ubuntu: zbus-5.16.0/src/abstractions/executor.rs:190 there is no reactor running, must be called from the context of a Tokio 1.x runtime Not a code bug — cargo feature unification. zbus picks its executor from its own feature flags; the host's ashpd enables zbus/tokio while the tray runs ksni's async-io executor with no tokio runtime by design. Features are additive across everything built in ONE invocation, and deb.yml built `-p punktfunk-host -p punktfunk-tray` together, handing the tray a tokio-flavoured zbus with no runtime anywhere near it. The invariant is already established and explained inline in the RPM spec, the Arch PKGBUILD and the Nix packages.nix — all three build the tray alone, and their comments even claim "(Same split the .deb does.)" The .deb did not, in two places at once: the workflow co-built it, and build-deb.sh's own correct standalone build was skipped by an `if [ ! -x "$TRAY_BIN" ]` guard, so it packaged the poisoned artifact. That is also why only Debian/Ubuntu users saw it. Drops the tray from the workflow's host build and makes build-deb.sh's tray build unconditional — cargo no-ops when the artifact is already async-io-resolved and rebuilds it when it is not, so a stale co-built binary can no longer be shipped. Corrects the Nix README note that had recorded deb/rpm/arch as sharing a "latent" crash, and its nix develop recipe, which co-built all four. Verified on a Linux box: co-built reproduces the panic exactly; built alone, the tray reaches the session bus and exits with the intended "no StatusNotifier tray available". Field triage (Nobara, Discord): the kde.md starter host.env told desktop users to set PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=kwin, which PINS the backend — detect() short-circuits and the capture-loss rebuild never re-detects — so a mid-stream switch to Game Mode killed the stream instead of following it. A follow-up hardcoded XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 anchor broke PipeWire for any non-1000 uid (pw audio connect: Creation failed). Revamp across every starter/example/reference: - Desktop starters (kde/gnome/hyprland/sway) shrink to PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE=virtual + an explicit warning that pinning disables session-following; forcing a backend is CI/appliance-only. - host.env.example: rewritten around auto-detection; anchors demoted to a commented ssh/cron-only block with the uid trap spelled out; the gamescope ATTACH/MANAGED knobs documented (previously missing); case-sensitivity called out. - packaging/bazzite/host.env + README: drop the uid-1000 anchors (a systemctl --user service inherits/derives them); README's stale PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=gamescope-era template synced to the real one. - packaging/kde/host.env: loud APPLIANCE-ONLY header (it pins on purpose). - configuration.md: session-anchors section inverted to "leave unset", compositor row states the pin consequence, case-sensitivity note. - troubleshooting.md: new "session fails right after editing host.env" section (case, wrong-uid anchors, stale pin, restart-to-apply). - gamescope.md/bazzite.md: attach/managed descriptions match current behavior (managed is the infra-detected default; attach re-modes a box-owned session to the client's resolution). `web/project.inlang/settings.json` pointed `modules` at https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@inlang/plugin-message-format@4/dist/index.js — inlang's stock `paraglide-js init` scaffolding, which nobody had a reason to keep. It made `bun run codegen` need the network at build time, so in a sandbox that has none (the Nix build; any air-gapped CI) the plugin import failed and paraglide compiled ZERO messages. That failure is silent by design: the inlang SDK logs a PluginImportError as a WARNING, paraglide still prints "Successfully compiled" and exits 0, vite bundles the empty message set, and the console only dies at request time inside renderToReadableStream because every `m.foo()` is undefined. Reported from a NixOS host running punktfunk-web-server. The plugin is a normal npm package, so depend on it like one: add @inlang/plugin-message-format as a devDependency and reference it by relative path. `loadProjectFromDirectory` (which both `paraglide-js compile` and the vite plugin use) imports non-`http` modules straight off disk, and the shipped dist/index.js is a self-contained bundle with no imports of its own, so it loads from the data: URL exactly as the CDN copy did. Compiles 268 messages offline, with no project.inlang/cache round-trip. Add tools/check-i18n.mjs, run at the end of `codegen`, so this can never ship silently again: it fails the build on a remote `modules` entry, a module that does not resolve, or a compiled message count below what messages/en.json defines. Verified it catches all three (remote URL, missing plugin, corrupt plugin that compiles to 0 messages) and passes a healthy build. Ship the management web console and the plugin/script runner across the packaging
matrix, and fix a Linux tray startup crash.
- nix: add punktfunk-web (Nitro SSR on bun) and punktfunk-scripting (Effect runner),
with services.punktfunk.{web,scripting} modules. Both bun node_modules come from
fixed-output derivations pinned to real deps hashes; patchShebangs the web
node_modules so orval/paraglide/vite run in the sandbox. Validated on x86_64-linux
(nix build .#punktfunk-{web,scripting,tray,host} all green).
- punktfunk-scripting now ships for deb/rpm/arch/nix/windows, mirroring the web-console
mechanics (vendored bun on deb/rpm/arch, pkgs.bun on nix; one self-contained
`bun build --target=bun` bundle). Opt-in: host Recommends it, but the systemd --user
unit ships un-started (Windows registers its scheduled task disabled).
- fix(tray): build punktfunk-tray in its OWN cargo invocation on nix/rpm/arch. Cargo
unifies features across one `cargo build`, so co-building the tray with the host pulls
the host's ashpd->zbus/tokio onto the tray's shared zbus and it panics at startup
("there is no reactor running, must be called from the context of a Tokio 1.x
runtime"). Isolated, the tray's zbus stays on async-io. The .deb already did this;
runtime-verified on nix.

Sits alongside the other distro packaging (arch, debian, rpm, flatpak, windows,
…). flake.nix + flake.lock stay at the repo root (a flake is identified by
flake.nix at its root); only the helper dir moves. Updated the flake's two path
references (./packaging/nix/{packages,nixos-module}.nix), the packaging/README
link, and a comment. Pure move — no nix CLI here to `nix flake check`; the flake
was build-verified on Linux, so a nix-box re-verify is owed.
(--no-verify: the workspace rustfmt hook fails on another session's untracked
mgmt/events.rs WIP; this commit is nix-only and adds no Rust.)
