docs: streaming a real monitor, and the CLI that names one
The console grew a "Streamed screen" card and the host grew a PUNKTFUNK_CAPTURE_MONITOR knob and a list-monitors command, and the docs knew about none of it — a control with no explanation anywhere. virtual-displays.md gets the feature section: what it is for, that the monitor is never touched, that its resolution wins and a client scales, that a bad name is a hard error rather than a different screen, and that there is no chooser dialog on any of the four backends (which is what makes it work unattended). Plus the three troubleshooting entries the shape of the feature predicts: settings that do nothing while mirroring, a console card the env var has locked, and a pin that names no head. host-cli.md documents list-monitors and mirror-test; configuration.md gets the knob, including that it outranks the console on purpose; running-as-a-service.md gets the desktop-session drop-in and states that the host needs nothing exported to find its session. chore: consolidate parallel-session WIP (HOLD — do not push)
Local snapshot of intermingled in-flight work, committed to unblock the encode
refactor (a clean ffmpeg_win.rs for the vbv-dedup follow-on). These hunks span
the same files and can't be cleanly split here; the commit bundles three
distinct workstreams that each belong in their own PR:
- logging rework (~43 files: level re-tiering, structured fields, `?e`,
hot-path flood latches)
- conflicting-host detection (detect.rs + detect/{linux,windows}.rs + wiring
in main.rs/mgmt.rs/Cargo.toml/docs/packaging)
- standby-sink DWM-stall attribution (windows/display_events.rs + capture/
vdisplay wiring)
NOT verified as a combination. NOT to be pushed until the refactor is done and
these are re-verified and reorganized into their proper per-workstream PRs.

Six parallel audits swept the root docs, docs-site, every per-directory README, and the packaging docs; every claim below was verified against the source before editing. - README: Layout gains the six missing crates (pf-client-core, pf-presenter, pf-console-ui, pf-ffvk, pf-driver-proto, punktfunk-tray), clients/session, api/ and ci/; Linux/Windows client rows reflect the shell + Vulkan-session split and the Vulkan Video -> VAAPI/D3D11VA -> software decode chains; the "every client over a C ABI" claim is corrected (Rust clients link the core directly); tiered stats overlay + console shell noted; Apple row mentions AV1. - CONTRIBUTING: drop the dead CLAUDE.md link (deliberately untracked); point at the README's build/invariants sections. SECURITY: 0.9.0. - host-cli/pairing: --allow-pairing/--require-pairing are no-op legacy names — pairing is required by default, --allow-tofu is the real flag; document --data-port and --idle-timeout-ms. - configuration: document PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD (session-crash recovery hook), PUNKTFUNK_MDNS, PUNKTFUNK_DATA_PORT. - virtual-displays/gnome: GNOME per-client scaling shipped (host- persisted) — flip the ❌ to ✅ and describe how it works. - stats: new "Detail levels" section (Off/Compact/Normal/Detailed + per-platform cycle gestures); retire the GTK hand-off note. - clients/install-client/status/roadmap: decode chains, Windows client validation narrowed to HDR-only pending, adaptive bitrate, console shell, Apple AV1, Windows host vendor list. - Sub-READMEs: clients/linux rewritten for the re-architecture; session Windows decode rung + d3d11va knob; Windows tiered overlay; Android minSdk 28; decky file table; host zerocopy/ path; scripts port 47992 and steamos-host.md; pf-dualsense source path. - packaging: canary version bases are tag-derived (<next-minor> via pf-version.sh/.ps1), codecs-extra not ffmpeg-full, document the pinned offline-Skia tarball + SKIA_BINARIES_URL and vulkan-headers. - Convert 15 dangling design/*.md links to the punktfunk-planning prose convention (those docs live in the private planning repo). mDNS advertisement (native _punktfunk._udp AND GameStream _nvstream) can now be disabled with --no-mdns on serve/punktfunk1-host or PUNKTFUNK_MDNS=0 (the PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY off-grammar) — for multicast-dead environments (bridged Docker, CI netns) where the advert reaches nobody or fails outright and aborts the GameStream plane; clients dial a manually-added host instead (mDNS-blind host-add works since the 0.8.4 dial-first fix). Unit tests no longer advertise on the LAN (mdns: false). punktfunk1-host gains --pairing-pin <PIN> (the already-plumbed fixed-PIN test seam, now CLI-exposed; empty refused like --mgmt-token) so a CI harness runs a deterministic SPAKE2 ceremony instead of scraping the logged PIN. Verified live: --no-mdns + PUNKTFUNK_MDNS=0 skip the advert, --pairing-pin arms with the fixed PIN, and a punktfunk1-host --source synthetic + punktfunk-probe loopback run passes verification (60/60 frames, 0 mismatch). feat(protocol, clients): codec preference negotiation + Linux client decodes per Welcome (Phase 2a)
Adds a client-selectable **preferred codec** and wires the core + ABI + probe + Linux client to
negotiate and decode it. (Windows/Apple/Android follow in 2b.)
**Core:**
- `Hello.preferred_codec` (a single CODEC_* bit, 0 = auto) — a soft hint appended after
`video_codecs`. `resolve_codec(client, host, preferred)` now honors the preference when the host
can also emit it, else falls back to precedence (HEVC > AV1 > H.264). Roundtrip + preference tests.
- `NativeClient::connect` takes `video_codecs` + `preferred_codec`; `NativeClient.codec` exposes the
resolved `Welcome.codec`.
- ABI: `punktfunk_connect_ex7` (adds the two codec params; `ex6` delegates to it advertising
HEVC-only) + `punktfunk_connection_codec` getter + `PUNKTFUNK_CODEC_{H264,HEVC,AV1}` constants
(drift-guarded against the wire values). Header regenerated.
**Host:** passes `hello.preferred_codec` into `resolve_codec`.
**probe:** `--codec h264|hevc|av1|auto` sets the preference (still advertises it can decode all
three); the dump extension already follows the resolved codec.
**Linux client:** advertises the codecs FFmpeg can actually decode (`decodable_codecs()`), threads
the user's `codec` setting as the preference, and builds the decoder — both the software and VAAPI
paths, plus the mid-session VAAPI→software demotion — from the negotiated `Welcome.codec` instead of
hardcoding HEVC. New "Video codec" dropdown in Preferences (Automatic/HEVC/H.264/AV1).
Live-validated on the dev box: probe `--codec hevc` against a software (H.264-only) host resolves to
H.264 (graceful soft-preference fallback), no failure. clippy + core (57) + host (133) tests green.

feat(web): unify console + docs on @unom/ui; host OpenAPI via Scalar
Move the management console (web/) off shadcn/ui to the shared @unom/ui design system the marketing site + docs are built on, on the punktfunk violet brand over dark chrome: - Add @unom/ui/@unom/style/motion/radix-ui/zod + Geist; web/.npmrc maps the @unom scope (packages are public-read, so CI needs no npm auth). - styles.css: one dark-violet palette (#141019/#1c1530, brand #6c5bf3 -> #a79ff8) exposed under BOTH the shadcn token names the routes use and @unom/ui's contract, so routes + components both resolve; pulls in @unom/ui's material gloss + easings. - components/ui/* now back onto @unom/ui (AnimatedButton/InputText/Label/ AnimatedCard); brand-mark/wordmark/logo replace the generic Radio icon in the shell + login. - MaterialProvider (specular gloss) at the root. No UI sounds, like the site. docs-site: new /api route renders the host management REST API as an interactive Scalar reference (reads public/openapi.json, a snapshot of docs/api/openapi.json), branded violet and linked from the top nav, the docs sidebar, the landing page, and host-cli.md. feat(host): GameStream/Moonlight compat is now opt-in (--gamestream) — secure native-only by default
Follows the security audit (#5/#9): the GameStream-compat plane carries inherent on-path weaknesses that can't be fixed on the wire without breaking stock Moonlight — its pairing runs over plain HTTP (#9, MITM-able during the pairing window) and its legacy control encryption can reuse GCM nonces (#5, a passive eavesdropper can recover/forge input). The native punktfunk/1 plane (SPAKE2 PIN pairing + per-direction AEAD nonces) has neither. So flip the default to secure-by-default: - `serve` → native punktfunk/1 plane + management API ONLY (no GameStream surface). - `serve --gamestream` → ALSO the GameStream/Moonlight-compat planes (nvhttp pairing, RTSP, ENet control, _nvstream mDNS). Opt-in, logged with a trusted-LAN caveat. `--moonlight` is an alias. - The native plane is now ALWAYS on in `serve` (`--native` is a kept-for-compat no-op); the unified GameStream+native host is `serve --gamestream`. `gamestream::serve` gates the GameStream spawns (nvhttp/rtsp/control/mdns) on the flag; the native plane + mgmt + native-pairing handle always run. To avoid silently regressing validated Moonlight deployments, the explicit deployment configs PRESERVE Moonlight via `--gamestream` (each documents dropping it for a secure native-only host): the Linux systemd unit, the Steam Deck installer, and the Windows service default (DEFAULT_HOST_CMD). The bare `serve` default (new/manual use) is secure. Docs swept to match (host-cli, moonlight, quickstart, install, packaging READMEs, CLAUDE.md, README, …): Moonlight setup now instructs `--gamestream`; native/console refs use bare `serve`. OpenAPI regenerated (a stale "run `serve --native`" string). fmt + clippy clean; 94 host tests green. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

docs: update README + docs site for public readiness
Refresh the README and documentation for public visitors: - README: public-facing rewrite with accurate status for all four native clients (macOS, Linux, Windows, Android) and the Windows host. - docs site: fix stale client status (Android is a full client, not a scaffold; Windows client is stage-1 complete + signed MSIX), add the missing Android client section, correct "which client" guidance. - Windows host: corrected from "deferred/scoped" to implemented & shipping (NVIDIA-only, x64-only) across windows-host, roadmap, status, requirements, running-as-a-service, and the README. - Remove internal infrastructure from public docs (box names, private IPs, SSH/token commands, deploy topology); rewrite status.md as a public project-status page; sanitize ci.md and implementation-plan.md. - Update clients/android and clients/apple READMEs to current state. refactor: drop milestone names + consolidate clients; loss-recovery & rumble fixes
Two bodies of work in one commit (the rename moved files the fixes also touched). Naming/structure cleanup (pre-launch): - Host modules m3.rs->punktfunk1.rs, m0.rs->spike.rs; CLI m3-host->punktfunk1-host, m0->spike; bare `punktfunk-host` now prints help. Types M3Options/M3Source-> Punktfunk1Options/Punktfunk1Source. - Clients consolidated out of crates/ into clients/: punktfunk-client-rs-> clients/probe (crate punktfunk-probe), client-linux->clients/linux, client-windows->clients/windows, punktfunk-android->clients/android/native (crate punktfunk-client-android; kept [lib] name=punktfunk_android so the JNI contract is unchanged). crates/ now holds only core + host. - Milestone codes M0-M4 purged from code/CLI/CLAUDE.md/README/docs/docs-site, kept only in docs/implementation-plan.md. docs/m2-plan.md-> docs/gamestream-host-plan.md. CI/gradle/flatpak paths updated. Client loss-recovery (video froze and never recovered after a brief drop): - Export punktfunk_connection_frames_dropped through the C ABI (the core already tracked it for the client keyframe-recovery loop; it was never reachable from the ABI clients). Regenerated punktfunk_core.h. - Apple (StreamPump + Stage2Pipeline) and Android (decode.rs) now poll frames_dropped and request a keyframe when it climbs -- the same loss-driven recovery Linux/Windows already had. Under infinite GOP the decoder silently conceals reference-missing frames, so the decode-error trigger rarely fires. Apple rumble robustness (worked then went spotty -- DualSense + Xbox): - Add CHHapticEngine stopped/reset handlers (rebuild on app background / audio interruption / server reset) and drop the permanent `broken` latch on a transient drive failure; latch only when the controller truly has no haptics. - Surface swallowed SDL set_rumble errors on Linux/Windows + diagnostic logging. Verified: cargo build/clippy/fmt --workspace, C-ABI harness, header drift. Not runnable on this box (verify in CI): Gitea workflows, gradle/Android, flatpak, Swift/decky. docs(dist): end-user install front door + serve/pairing/firewall accuracy fixes
Make the host docs match the real distribution path and the actual CLI. Reviewed by a multi-agent pass (6 editors against one verified fact sheet + an accuracy reviewer); its findings (a wrong client-Recommends claim, a native-concurrency overstatement) folded in. - Install front door: new README "Install (host)" method-picker + docs-site/install.md (+ nav), routing each distro to its package registry; source build demoted to a fallback. - Registry-first install: ubuntu-gnome/ubuntu-kde now lead with the apt registry (not a cargo build); bazzite leads with the Gitea RPM registry (was COPR/source). Source builds moved to an appendix. - CLI accuracy: serve --native arms pairing from the web console (NOT --allow-pairing, which with --require-pairing/--max-concurrent is m3-host-only); --open disables mandatory pairing. host-cli/configuration/pairing/quickstart/troubleshooting corrected; mgmt API documented as always HTTPS+token. Native host serves one session at a time (extras queue) — not multi. - Firewall: real ports documented (native UDP 9777 + the ephemeral data port caveat + GameStream ports) for Debian + Arch (ufw + nftables), not just Bazzite. - Sync/accuracy: punktfunk-client (GTK4) presented as a shipping client (not "roadmap"), punktfunk-client-rs as the headless tool; host Recommends punktfunk-web only (not the client); COPR chroots f43/44; bootc header says Gitea registry not COPR. docs: user-facing docs revamp — structured product docs + per-platform setup
Replace the dev/agent-log pages with a proper user-facing doc set: - Getting Started: Introduction (rewritten), How It Works, Quick Start. - Host Setup: Requirements, then clean per-platform guides — Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu KDE, Fedora KDE (new), Bazzite (rewritten) — plus Running as a Service (desktop / headless GNOME / headless KDE). - Connecting: Clients overview, Moonlight, Pairing & Trust. - Configuration: host.env reference, Host CLI, Troubleshooting. - The dev/design notes (architecture, roadmap, the deferred design specs, CI) move to a clearly-separated "Project & Internals" nav section. Removes the superseded box-specific pages (gnome-box, headless-box, linux-setup, overview). status.md (the internal progress tracker, with box IPs) is kept as a file but dropped from the public nav. Site builds clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |
