enricobuehler 5c05246098 feat: M10 — FFmpeg is gone from the client
cargo tree -p punktfunk-client-session finds no ffmpeg. The host still does,
which is the whole point: pf-encode keeps libavcodec unconditionally and no
host workflow, packaging script or licence file was touched.

Deleted: crates/pf-ffvk, video_vulkan.rs, video_vaapi.rs, video_libav.rs, the
libavcodec half of video_d3d11.rs, the av_log machinery, ffmpeg::codec::Id as
the decoder's vocabulary (the quic CODEC_* wire constants now serve, which is
why the evidence table was keyed on them), DecodedImage::VkFrame and ::Dmabuf,
the presenter's AVVkFrame lane, and the ffmpeg-fallback feature with
everything behind it. DrmFrameGuard collapses from an enum to a newtype, which
removes an unsafe impl Send. Roughly 25,000 lines.

Then the CI, packaging, licensing and docs work the plan's §6 lists: the
Windows workflows lose FFMPEG_DIR, PF_FFVK_VULKAN_INCLUDE and their PATH
prepend; the MSIX loses its DLL wildcard; the client .deb stops emitting libav
sonames on its own because depends come from dpkg-shlibdeps; arch, flatpak and
nix drop the dependency; and the README's "FFmpeg 7 or 8" contract narrows to
the host.

Three defects reached users' machines in the first cut, and none was in the
deletion itself.

All three desktop Settings UIs offer vulkan, vaapi and d3d11va as stored
decoder values, so those strings sit in shipped settings files today. Refusing
them by name — which is the correct rule for a stale pin — would have bricked
every upgraded client whose owner ever touched that dropdown. They now migrate
onto the native rung for the same hardware family, at decoder construction AND
at each dialog's lookup, because a legacy value that matches no preset
displays as "Automatic" and silently rewrites the user's preference on the
next save.

M9's evidence filter was deleted on the argument that with no libavcodec twin
below, barring an unproven rung removes hardware decode rather than moving
down one rung. That is true on Windows and false on Linux for Intel and every
unknown vendor id, where prefer_vulkan_first is false and the order is
native-vaapi → native-vk: a rung that has decoded nothing anywhere sitting
above one that is 250/250 on three drivers. Every Intel Linux desktop would
have moved from libavcodec VAAPI, shipping for years, onto pf-vaadec by
default — and a rung that constructs and then produces wrong pixels leaves
only by the error-streak demotion, which this codebase already documents as
not tripping on the B580's strobing. The filter is restored as a narrow, pure,
testable rule: an unproven rung yields to a proven one, and to nothing else.
Windows deliberately passes no rung below, because that vendor family is the
one with a measured wrong-pixel report against Vulkan decode, and trading no
evidence for evidence of corruption is the wrong direction.

And the notices still said FFmpeg was bundled. The root file is what both
desktop clients include_str! and what the MSIX ships, three lines under the
new card saying no FFmpeg is bundled; Apple's Acknowledgements said it too, on
iOS, tvOS and macOS. The generator now emits four per-client files scoped by
transitive closure — 0 FFmpeg mentions in each, verified — while the root file
keeps it for the host. That also ends the standing false attribution of
ffmpeg-next, GTK4, windows-rs and the NVENC SDK to an iPhone.

Windows has no reachable box, so it was compiled instead: a cross clippy at
-D warnings on x86_64 and aarch64-pc-windows-msvc with the C toolchain stubbed
so build scripts run without linking. That gate immediately caught an
include_str! path one directory too deep, which nothing else could have.

Gates: container clippy -D warnings, 160 tests, workspace check, both Windows
targets clean, client ffmpeg count 0 and host 2. The four decode crates are
untouched, so the hardware rungs' 250/250 stands.

⚠ Owed and unrun: no GPU has executed any of this milestone. M8's on-glass
software check, M7's D3D11 and VAAPI AV1 hardware legs, and M9's field bake
all still want hardware, and the bake window and criteria remain the user's.

enricobuehler d3e000768d feat(client): M6 begins — the libva layouts, measured rather than transcribed
The VAAPI rung's crate, in the shape the other two native rungs established:
everything that can be a pure decision or a pure conversion lives in a
cross-platform crate the ordinary gates run, and only the parts that genuinely
need a device stay behind a platform cfg. This lands the first half of that —
the buffer layouts and the decoder-creation decisions — with the conversion to
follow.

Route: minimal FFI rather than cros-libva. The plan of record permits either
("cros-libva (or minimal FFI)"), and hand-declaring keeps the crate building
and testing on macOS and in the Linux container, which is the property that
made pf-dxvadec's defects findable on a laptop instead of on a box.

The layouts are not eyeballed. A C probe compiled against real libva 2.23.0
headers printed sizeof/alignof/offsetof for every field and set individual
bit-fields to read the resulting word back; those numbers are pinned as const
assertions, so a transcription slip is a compile error rather than a driver
reading the wrong byte. The probe is committed beside them, with the command
that runs it, because evidence that cannot be re-run is a claim.

What the probe settled that a reader would otherwise get wrong: VAPictureH264
is 36 bytes and is embedded 81 times across the two buffers, so its size is
load-bearing for every later offset; the three DEPRECATED FMO fields still
occupy bytes 624..628, and dropping them would shift everything after; and C
bit-fields allocate from the least significant bit on this ABI — proven, since
that is ABI-defined rather than standardised.

Groundwork for the conversion, established here so the next work package
starts from facts:

slice_data_bit_offset needs no new parsing. VAAPI is the only backend that
wants a bit position — DXVA takes a byte offset, Vulkan takes none — and the
vendored parser already records exactly it as SliceHeader::header_bit_size,
computed as (nalu.size - epb) * 8 - bits_left: from and including the NAL
header byte, emulation-prevention bytes removed. That is the field's
definition verbatim, and it is there because cros-codecs' own production
backend is VAAPI.

The slice data buffer starts at the NAL header byte, so the start code is
skipped — SlicePlan::data is start-code-inclusive and the prefix is three OR
four bytes, the host emitting four on 100% of access units.

reference_frames is the marked DPB, the same statement DXVA's RefFrameList
makes, so it comes from the dpb_refs snapshot; Vulkan's pReferenceSlots is the
opposite and takes the access unit's own set. All three conventions now have a
written home, which is the distinction that cost M5 a defect.

Unlike DXVA short-format, VAAPI wants the per-slice reference lists and the
full prediction weight tables inline — hence the 3128-byte slice record. One
wrinkle recorded rather than left to be discovered: the vendored
PredWeightTable stores luma_offset_l0 as [i8; 32] but luma_offset_l1 as
[i16; 32], and libva wants i16 for both.

Profile selection resolves H.264 to High for every 8-bit 4:2:0 stream instead
of reading profile_idc, because High is a superset for the tools our hosts
emit and picking Main for a stream that turns out to use 8x8 transforms is a
mid-stream failure where picking High is not. 4:4:4 and 10-bit H.264 are
refused rather than narrowed to an 8-bit profile — that class of silent
narrowing decodes to garbage instead of failing.

11 tests: the probe's bit patterns, a disjointness check per bit-field word
(two probe vectors alone would not catch a shift typo that overlapped two
fields), and the envelope refusals. Gates: rustfmt, clippy, cargo doc with no
unresolved links, and the Linux container's clippy -D warnings, tests and
workspace check.

enricobuehler 31087697a9 feat(client): M5 — native D3D11VA decode, pin-only pending hardware
The Windows fallback rung, and auto's first choice on Intel, now has a
native implementation driven by pf-bitstream's plans instead of
libavcodec. New crate pf-dxvadec holds everything that can be a pure
function — the DXVA structure layouts, both codec conversions, bitstream
packing, config selection — deliberately CROSS-PLATFORM, because a
cfg(windows) module is verified by a remote cargo check and nothing
else, and this milestone's riskiest code is exactly the part no local
test can see. Only the FFI lives in video_d3d11_native.rs.

windows-rs does not generate dxva.h at the pinned rev, so the DXVA
structures are hand-declared: compile-time assertions on every struct
size AND every field offset, packed bitfield words as plain integers
with named builders and the bit positions written beside the C
declaration, and a const zeroed() per struct so construction needs no
unsafe at all. The crate's only unsafe is a sealed byte view over those
PODs. Review round 13 checked all seven layouts field by field in
declaration order — sizes, widths, array lengths, the PicEntry
index/flag packing, and every named bit's position and width.

The decode pool reproduces libavcodec's rather than inventing one:
ONE texture with ArraySize = pool size, BIND_DECODER and nothing else,
MiscFlags 0, aligned 16 for H.264 and 128 for HEVC. That is deliberate.
This rung's predecessor records that a hand-built pool which validated
on NVIDIA was rejected by Intel at the first SubmitDecoderBuffers — and
Intel is the vendor this rung exists for. The VideoProcessorBlt into
shareable RGBA is untouched: importing a multiplanar NV12 D3D11 texture
into Vulkan device-losts on NVIDIA, so that hand-off is load-bearing
field-proven code. It was extracted into a shared HandoffRing so both
rungs fill one implementation; the review diffed the blit statement by
statement, including the keyed-mutex pairing.

Review round 13's four defects are fixed. The blocking one: the HEVC
quantisation matrix was submitted unconditionally, and the vendored
parser leaves it ALL ZEROS unless the stream codes one — unlike FFmpeg,
which seeds the spec defaults. On a stream saying 'use the default
matrices' the driver is obliged to apply what it is handed, so every
residual would dequantise to zero and the picture would drift to flat
prediction. It is now gated on scaling_list_enabled_flag exactly as
libav gates it, with the Table 7-5/7-6 defaults supplied when enabled
but uncoded.

Second: NumMBsInBuffer was 0 where libav's H.264 path sets
mb_width * mb_height. This module's whole method is verbatim
reproduction on precisely the call that once failed for Intel, so an
omitted descriptor field is the same class of bug as the pool.

Third, and the one to watch on hardware: RefFrameList carried the
frame's reference set rather than the pictures marked used for
reference. Vulkan defines pReferenceSlots as the slots this operation
uses, so a subset is correct there; DXVA defines RefFrameList as a
statement about the DPB. The list DERIVATION survives a subset — which
is exactly why a smoke test would have passed — but a long-term
reference held across frames that none of them name would vanish and
reappear, and a driver keeping per-reference state is entitled to
discard it in between. That is the Ally X symptom shape. pf-bitstream
now exposes a per-AU DPB snapshot for both codecs and the converters
build the array from it, frame references first, marked tail appended.
121 of the 250 vendored AUs carry a marked picture the frame never
names, so this is exercised, not theoretical.

Fourth: the session identity omitted bit depth and chroma, while the
Windows host flips an HDR desktop to PQ in-band with a new SPS — a
depth change at unchanged size would have decoded 10-bit samples into
an NV12 pool. Identity now derives from the SPS per AU and rebuilds.

Wired PIN-ONLY (PUNKTFUNK_DECODER=native-d3d11va), absent from every
auto arm. Nothing has decoded a frame yet, and M2's discipline was that
auto admission comes only after hardware parity. A runtime streak
demotes to the FFmpeg D3D11VA rung first, then software.

Also scaffolded: a byte-diff harness against libavcodec's own DXVA
picture parameters, with the FFmpeg patch and capture recipe in its
docs. Nothing here is checked against libav's actual bytes the way M3
was checked against its pixels, and that is the cheap way to buy the
confidence before hardware.

Gates: fmt clean; container clippy -D warnings zero across
pf-client-core + pf-presenter + pf-vkdecode + pf-dxvadec +
punktfunk-core; tests 73/131/63/129/354 green; cargo check --workspace
clean; Windows cargo check and clippy -D warnings clean on .173.

enricobuehler d24f7fc6ac feat(pf-vkdecode): the CPU half of native Vulkan decode — StdVideo conversion + slot map
M2 WP-A (design/client-native-decode.md §3.2). AuPlan -> StdVideo
parameter sets (owned pointer backings), per-AU decode info with slice
start-code offsets, and a PicId->slot map that never evicts on its own.
Deliberate rejections over silent claims: FMO, separate colour planes,
DPBs deeper than 16 frames (unbounded VUI ue(v)) all fail closed.

pf-bitstream API grew what the review proved necessary: RefPic carries
the true top/bottom field order counts (a single poc fabricated
BottomFieldOrderCnt whenever the PPS signals pic-order deltas), the
>16-frame DPB envelope gate, and an MMCO5 rebase warning.

Adversarial review round two: 8 findings fixed pre-commit, including
transactional slot mutation (an error path could permanently desync
the map) and count/pointer coherence on type-1 POC offsets.

Gates: fmt clean, clippy -D warnings zero, 45+26+21 tests green on
macOS and the linux/amd64 container.

enricobuehler b5e54aea6e feat(client): vendor the cros-codecs parser layer + pf-bitstream skeleton
M1 of design/client-native-decode.md. The vendored snapshot (AOSP mirror
main @ 5ff6d693ffae, BSD-3, PROVENANCE.md) is the codec module only —
H.264/H.265/AV1/VP9 parsers, DPBs and their test vectors, which now run
as 45 conformance tests in our CI. pf-bitstream sits where upstream's
Linux-only decoder::stateless half would and starts with vendor-pinning
smoke tests: a re-sync that shifts parser behavior trips in-tree, not in
a decode session.

A minor bump: 39 commits since v0.23.0 across 121 files. Mostly a fix-up of
0.23.0 — the slice wire's reassembler sized every sentinel-opened AU at
max_frame_bytes and lost 9 of 12 in-flight frames on any link that reorders,
which is the freeze field reports were seeing on Android and the session client
— plus the desktop presenter rebuild (intent model, V-Sync/VRR as real settings,
the driver's queue-free vblank mode where it exists), the Decky settings tab
growing from nine rows to the whole store, a "Forward controllers" off switch
for passthrough couches, and plugin output finally reaching the console's log
page. The canary base is already 0.24 — scripts/ci/pf-version.sh derives it as
one minor ahead of the latest stable tag — so this is the version canary has
been publishing against all along.

No wire, ABI or driver-protocol change: wire protocol 2, C ABI 14, virtual-display
driver protocol 6 and the Windows virtual-gamepad channel 3 are all identical to
0.23.0. No new capability bits either — VIDEO_CAP_MULTI_SLICE took the video-caps
byte's last free bit in 0.23.0 and nothing here needed the next one. The only
generated-header change since the tag is documentation (probe elapsed_ms
semantics), already committed and verified by ci.yml's staleness gate on main.

Lock touched for the 32 workspace members only, via `cargo update --workspace`:
diff against origin/main is versions-only, 32 insertions and 32 deletions (the
33rd 0.23.0 line in the lock is the third-party `wasapi` crate, which sits at
0.23.0 itself — same trap as the last cut). `cargo metadata --locked` resolves;
`cargo fmt --all --check` clean in both the main and the packaging/windows/drivers
workspaces.

api/openapi.json is deliberately left at 0.23.0: it tracks API edits and lags a
release, as in every prior cut.

Notes at docs/releases/v0.24.0.md, per docs/releases/README.md — authored with the
bump so CI's ensure_release seeds the release body at tag creation. Play's "What's
new" at docs/releases/whatsnew/v0.24.0.txt (409/500 chars), which android.yml now
gates as a hard failure at step 1; the gate's own logic was run locally against
this file, including the byte-identical-to-another-release check.

A minor bump: 133 commits since v0.22.3 across 400-odd files. The wire grew two
negotiated abilities (slice-streamed access units, phase-locked capture); the
Android presenter was rebuilt; the microphone path was rebuilt end to end on
every client; the web console moved from polling to the host's event stream;
gamescope HDR is on by default; HDR and 4:4:4 stopped being mutually exclusive
on Windows; and the one-click update apply that missed the 0.22.3 cut ships here.
The canary base is already 0.23 — release.yml derives it as one minor ahead of
the latest stable tag — so this is the version the canary channel has been

f6cfe382fd refactor(update): one signed-manifest checker, shared by the host and the client
The host has known how to answer "is a newer build available for this box's
channel?" since the update-from-web-console work. The Linux client is about to
need the same answer from the same signed document, and a trust rule that lives
in two places is a trust rule that will drift.

So the parts where being wrong is a security bug now exist exactly once, in the
new `pf-update-check`: Ed25519 verification against pinned keys, the manifest
schema and its fail-closed validation, the post-redirect fetch, the version
comparison that has to reconcile four different canary spellings, and the
install-kind ladder — the last parameterised by which product is asking, since
the delivery channels are the same ones but the markers are not.

The pinned key list moves with them. Two lists could have disagreed about who
may announce a release, and the one that drifted is the one nobody would have
noticed; `publish-update-manifest.sh` follows to the new path, and a MISSING
keys file there is now fatal rather than a warning that silently skips the
cross-check the step exists to perform.

Host call sites are unchanged throughout: `store::index` and `update::manifest`
re-export from the shared crate under their old names, and `update::detect`
keeps its cached `detect()` and the host's command hints. Verified with clippy
-D warnings on Linux and on Windows (nvenc,amf-qsv,qsv), 340 host tests green.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 06a249e49f feat(host/linux): opt-in one-click updates — the pf-update root helper, group-scoped polkit grant, per-PM legs
The U2 leg of planning:host-update-from-web-console.md. A new dep-free root helper
(crates/pf-update) runs the distro package manager against the INSTALLED punktfunk
packages — apt (index refresh scoped to our list when present), dnf, rpm-ostree
(single-transaction re-resolve, reported staged), sysext (the proven signed-feed
updater), pacman only behind the explicit PACMAN_FULL_SYSUPGRADE opt-in — then the
run-the-binary gate, then a root-written result record. Zero attacker-influenceable
parameters end to end: fixed ExecStart oneshot (punktfunk-update.service), polkit rule
scoped to that one unit's start verb for the shipped-EMPTY punktfunk-update group
(joining it is the auditable opt-in; every postinst creates it, none populate it).
The host starts the unit, interprets the record (staged / nothing-newer-yet / changed),
and crosses its own restart on the same intent/reconcile machinery as the Windows leg.
Status now reports staged results and the opt-in hint.

Windows-installer patch release. 0.22.1 and 0.22.2 shipped without the web
console in them at all — confirmed from the tag builds' own logs, where the
console build step is `skipped` on a cache hit and the job is still green —
which also removed the only code that stopped bun before the installer
replaced it, hence the "DeleteFile failed; code 5" dialog. Both fixed here,
along with updates no longer disabling an operator's plugin runner.

Lock touched for the 30 workspace members only. `base64` stays at 0.22.1 and
the eight gtk-rs crates stay at 0.22.0 — they share our version space and a
blanket sed would move them to versions that do not exist. Diff is
versions-only, 30 insertions and 30 deletions; `cargo metadata --locked`
resolves; `cargo fmt --all --check` clean in both the main and the
packaging/windows/drivers workspaces.

Patch release: 0.22.0 and 0.22.1 gave every default-configured Windows host a
controller no game could see. The pf-dualsense -> pf-gamepad package rename also
renamed a HARDWARE id, so PnP matched none of our models, fell through to the
devnode's synthesized USB ids and let Microsoft's inbox input.inf win — HidUsb
cannot start on a software-enumerated devnode, and without a start there is no
device interface to answer a channel proof. This cut carries that one-line
restore, the [Models]-vs-host guard test, and the Punktfunk display-name rebrand
across the Windows devices and firewall rules.

Windows hosts only; clients and Linux hosts are untouched.

Versions-only lock diff, hand-applied: the 30 workspace-member entries move
0.22.1 -> 0.22.2. Two sets of third-party crates deliberately share our version
space and are untouched — `base64` at 0.22.1, and the eight gtk-rs crates at
0.22.0 (cairo/gdk-pixbuf/gio/graphene/pango); a blanket sed would corrupt both,
so the bump matches on member name only. `cargo metadata --locked` exits 0 on
the pinned toolchain. Release notes in docs/releases/v0.22.2.md seed the release
body per the Model-1 flow.

256 commits since v0.21.0. Minor, not patch: the headline is settings profiles —
named bundles of overrides bound per host, landing on all five clients at once
(Linux, Windows, Apple, Android) with one settings surface editing either layer,
marked-and-resettable override rows, per-profile colours, host bindings, one-off
"Connect with", and pinned host+profile cards. With them: the punktfunk:// link
grammar (one parser, one 44-case vector file run by the Rust, Swift and Kotlin
suites), double-clickable shortcuts, and `punktfunk` — one headless front-end
over the brain layer, which wakes a sleeping host the way a card click does.

Also: opt-in HDR on the gamescope path plus the cursor-in-the-node patch that
makes those sessions zero-copy; Vulkan Video 10-bit so AMD/Intel HDR keeps the
good path; a zero-copy NVENC HDR leg; host OS detection with marks on every
client and the console; PUNKTFUNK_HOST_NAME, PUNKTFUNK_MAX_FPS and
PUNKTFUNK_VDISPLAY_HZ_MULT; monitor enumeration on Windows; and the release-
integrity work (per-asset SHA256 sidecars, a signed sysext feed, one stable
driver publisher identity, fail-closed signing guards on a v* tag).

Wire protocol stays at 2, the embeddable C ABI at 13 and the Windows virtual-
display driver protocol at 6 — 0.18-0.22 hosts and clients keep mixing freely.
The Windows virtual-GAMEPAD channel protocol goes 2 -> 3 and fails closed both
ways: it carries the fix for a LocalService principal being able to take over a
pad's shared input section and forge HID input into the interactive desktop, so
the host and its drivers must ship together. The installer ships both.

Additive elsewhere: an advisory mDNS `os=` TXT key, HostInfo.os/os_name,
MonitorsResponse.pin_supported, an eighth field on the Android JNI discovery
record, and appended-last StoredHost fields per the frozen app-widget contract.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 a8744b98d1 feat(devtools): reproduce the capture-model cursor path without a real client
punktfunk-probe grows --cursor-capture: advertise CLIENT_CAP_CURSOR,
flip the channel to the capture model (CursorRenderMode client_draws=
false), and wiggle RELATIVE pointer motion for the whole dump — decode
the .h265 and the host-composited pointer must be in the pixels. Plus
--codec pyrowave (advertised only on request so the dump format of
existing recipes never changes).

tools/cursor-probe stands up the capture side alone: virtual output with
the out-of-band cursor, production PipeWire capturer, production
injector, absolute then relative motion — and reports whether
SPA_META_Cursor ever yields an overlay. It is how Mutter's
pointer-in-stream metadata gate was isolated on-glass.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 0594056e02 feat(cli): punktfunk — one headless front-end over the brain
C1 of design/client-architecture-split.md. There were four overlapping, none-complete CLIs:
the Linux shell's rich headless verbs, the Windows shell's near-none (it could not start a
stream at all), the session's own, and punktfunk-probe's diagnostics. This is the one a
script or a plugin should reach for, and it is a FRONT-END, not the brain — policy stays in
`pf-client-core` and the GUI shells keep calling it in-process. Shelling out for connects
would have traded duplicated code for a duplicated IPC protocol.

    punktfunk pair | hosts list/add/forget | wake | library | launch | open
              reachable | speed-test | profiles list | reset

Because it runs the same plan builder and the same wake machine as a card click, `launch`
and `open` WAKE A SLEEPING HOST — which the Linux shell's exec-style `--connect` never did;
it fired a packet at best and dialled into the void. Host references resolve through the
shared `resolve_host`, so `punktfunk launch desk` and `punktfunk://connect/desk` cannot
disagree about which box "desk" is.

Exit codes extend the session's contract so a consumer can branch without parsing prose:
0 ok, 2 connect, 3 trust, 4 renderer, 5 nothing matched what you named, 6 refused because
it needs a person. That last one is why `pair` and `reset` check for a terminal before
prompting — a CLI that blocks a CI job on a hidden question is a hang, not a UX.

Two deliberate non-features. `speed-test` measures and prints but does NOT apply: which
layer a bitrate belongs in is a decision the GUI makes with the user (global vs the bound
profile), and a CLI silently rewriting a profile is exactly the surprise that rule exists
to prevent. And `open` refuses an unknown host rather than pairing it — a URL may never
pair or trust on its own, at any surface.

`library` keeps TSV as its default output because that is what Decky's consumer parses;
`--json` is the door for tools, and the Playnite importer shells to exactly that. The
existing shell flags are untouched: they are a frozen compat contract until Decky migrates.

Verified on .21 against hand-authored stores: hosts list (TSV and JSON, with each host's
resolved profile and pins), profiles list, a launch honouring the binding ("Game"), a
one-off overriding it ("Work"), the same through `open` with `profile=`, and the refusal
codes (6 for an unknown host, 5 for `punktfunk://pair/...`).

`unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn = "warn"` was adopted workspace-wide in 39513528 on the assumption that
`warn` is a soft setting you can clear at leisure. It is not: ci.yml runs `cargo clippy … -D
warnings`, which promotes it to a hard error, so main has failed on EVERY commit since — Linux
`rust` and `rust-arm64` both dying on `pf-client-core` with 70 E0133 errors, and windows-host.yml
alongside them. A lint level that understates its own severity is worse than a strict one, so this
states what CI already does — `deny` — and writes the exemptions down instead.

Fourteen GPU/FFI backend files take `#![allow(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)]`, each with its reason and
the workspace Cargo.toml carrying the argument in full. They are not "not done yet": measured
across them, 64% of the sites are a single third-party FFI call (ash, pyrowave-sys, libav, the
NVENC/AMF entry tables), and of the 44 `unsafe fn`s only 4 have a body containing no unsafe
operation at all. Since pf-encode also denies `undocumented_unsafe_blocks`, narrowing them means a
hand-written SAFETY comment per line that could only restate the signature — the exact noise that
made `unsafe` stop meaning anything here before. Everything else stays at zero and enforced, and
each allow is removable on its own terms.

Two smaller things this had to clear, both invisible to the job that would have caught them:

- `service.rs`: `undocumented_unsafe_blocks` wants the proof on EACH block, and a comment covering
a group of consecutive `unsafe` statements only credits the first — so the two `OwnedHandle`
wraps became their own statements. Windows-gated, so only the .47 gate sees it. 37a42078 fixed
the same class of failure in pf-frame/dxgi.rs concurrently; that fix is taken as-is here.
- `clients/linux/ui_settings.rs`: `show`'s deletion left its doc comment stranded on `show_scoped`,
which silently merged two unrelated doc blocks onto one fn. Removed.

Verified by running the real CI commands, not proxies: on .21 fmt + `clippy --workspace
--all-targets -- -D warnings` + the feature-gated `-p pf-encode --features
nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave` + build + test, all rc=0; on the Intel box .47 all four
windows-host.yml clippy invocations, all rc=0. The arm64 job lints pf-client-core and
punktfunk-client-linux, both covered here.

enricobuehler 5219107177 chore(unsafe): the workspace adopts the drivers' unsafe discipline
`packaging/windows/drivers/*` has run `deny(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)` +
`deny(clippy::undocumented_unsafe_blocks)` for a while, with `forbid(unsafe_code)`
on the modules that need no unsafe at all. The main workspace had no lint config
whatsoever, so nothing stopped a clean crate from quietly growing an `unsafe`, and
nothing distinguished the handful of genuinely-unsafe lines inside a 600-line
`unsafe fn` from the safe ones surrounding them.

Three things, all mechanical:

* `#![forbid(unsafe_code)]` on the eight crates that already contain zero unsafe
(`pf-driver-proto`, `pf-host-config`, `pf-paths`, the three clean clients, both
tools). These were clean by accident, not by contract; now they are clean by
  contract.

* `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn = "warn"` workspace-wide. `unsafe fn` states a contract
the CALLER must uphold — it was never meant to switch off checking for the whole
body. Measured fallout is 300 sites on Linux, and they are concentrated: six
files carry all of them, while `punktfunk-core`, `pf-frame`, `pf-clipboard` and
`pf-vdisplay` are already at zero. `warn` (not `deny`) so the build stays green
while those six are worked down; it flips to `deny` once they are. This is also
the Rust 2024 default, so it pays off the edition migration early.

* `proc::current_uid()` replaces eight `unsafe { libc::getuid() }` blocks. Each
site had copied out the same SAFETY note verbatim, which is the tell: `getuid()`
is parameterless, always succeeds and touches no memory, so there is no contract
for a caller to uphold and no reason for the unsafe to be visible eight times.
One `unsafe` behind a safe wrapper, none at the call sites.

Verified: `pf-vdisplay` builds clean on Linux (Nobara) at zero E0133; the
macOS-buildable crates build clean locally. No behaviour change.

42 commits since v0.20.0 (v0.20.1 was tagged but never announced;
superseded by this release rather than repointed, since real new
functionality landed after it was cut). Minor, not patch: the
headline is streaming one of the machine's own physical monitors
instead of always creating a virtual display — pick it from a new
console card or pin it in host.env, on KWin, Mutter, sway and
Hyprland, in both the Punktfunk app and Moonlight.

Also folds in the full v0.20.1 fix bundle: three Windows install
blockers found within hours of 0.20.0, GameStream/Moonlight compat
back to opt-in on fresh installs, three gamescope Game Mode takeover
faults, a laptop-panel stall misdiagnosis, and the PyroWave
high-bitrate latency-creep bundle — plus a KWin 6.7 regression found
while building the monitor feature (silent kscreen-doctor fallback
on every session) and a winget release-verification CI fix.

Wire protocol stays at 2, the embeddable C ABI at 13 and the Windows
virtual-display driver protocol at 6. GET /display/monitors is a new
additive endpoint; the display policy gains an optional
capture_monitor field. No embedder rebuild required.

24 commits since v0.20.0. Patch, not minor: entirely fixes and
hardening on top of last release's session⇄game work, nothing new to
opt into. Headline fixes: three Windows install blockers reported
within hours of 0.20.0 (a false conflicting-host detection, a broken
winget log-path switch, missing package-source instructions),
GameStream/Moonlight compat flipped back to opt-in on fresh installs,
three gamescope Game Mode takeover faults that could black out a
Linux machine or strand it on a host restart, a deactivated laptop
panel misdiagnosed as a blind spot instead of a named stall cause,
and the PyroWave high-bitrate latency-creep bundle (clock re-sync
starvation, wire bitrate overshoot, backlog buildup, ABR probe
false-congestion).

Wire protocol stays at 2, the embeddable C ABI at 13 and the Windows
virtual-display driver protocol at 6, unchanged from 0.20.0 — no
embedder rebuild required, 0.18/0.19/0.20 hosts and clients mix
freely.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 9e1a686795 feat(tools): display-disturb — deterministic display-stack disturbance generator
The stall-immunity bench needs both stall classes on demand, without a standby
TV or a monitor-tool storm: `ddc` replays the Twinkle-Tray/PowerDisplay-class
DDC/CI traffic (VCP reads, optional capabilities-string requests) through the
win32k I2C path; `modeset` re-commits the current mode with CDS_RESET — the
Level-Two modeset entry that idles the whole adapter with nothing Win32-visible
changing. Every op prints an epoch-stamped took_ms line so host.log stall
reports correlate line-for-line, and the op duration itself measures the
driver's service time per disturbance.

117 commits since v0.19.2. Minor rather than patch: the headline is the
session⇄game lifetime binding on both planes and both platforms — the
stream ends when the game does, and optionally the reverse — plus
library metadata, winget packaging for the Windows host, a 64-bit ARM
Linux client, headless `--pair` enrolment, DRM card selection for the
compositor-less presenter, and the ABR/latency de-escalation work, which
changes runtime behaviour on every session.

Wire protocol stays at 2, the embeddable C ABI at 13 and the Windows
virtual-display driver protocol at 6, so 0.18/0.19/0.20 hosts and
clients mix freely and no embedder rebuild is required. The new GameMeta
library fields are optional and flat on the wire.

Notes authored ahead of the tag per docs/releases/README.md, so the
release is born with a body.

An all-fixes patch on top of 0.19.1, all host-side:

- KDE Plasma display takeover moved off kscreen-doctor to in-process
  kde_output_management_v2 (86d5d666), with the >60 Hz custom-mode install
ported too (64511af4) — a KWin host whose kscreen-doctor wedges now disables
its physicals and hands over the streamed output in ~2.4 ms instead of hanging
~26 s and never taking over.
- The gamescope managed takeover is display-manager-flavor-aware (e35dad52) so
switching a non-SDDM Linux desktop (Nobara / plasmalogin) into Game Mode no
longer start-limits the display manager into a permanent black screen, and
in-stream 'Switch to Desktop' is honored under it (a3e21d92).
- Windows display isolation anchors the kept sources at the desktop origin
(9b241d9d) so an origin-less desktop no longer fails 0x57, with restore
guaranteed never to leave the desktop all-dark.
- Windows pen/touch/absolute-mouse map over the streamed output's rect rather
than the whole virtual desktop (087e7d04), so absolute input lands correctly
when a physical monitor is kept on beside the streamed display.

Nothing moved on the wire (protocol 2) or at the C ABI (13), so no embedder
rebuild and 0.18/0.19 peers keep mixing freely. The Windows virtual-display
driver protocol is unchanged.

An all-fixes patch on top of 0.19.0. The headline is session teardown — the
native stop flag made enforceable and bounded (ac3dc432) and GameStream ending
on the control peer's ENet disconnect (41fa25c4), so a session can no longer
outlive the client that started it on either plane.

Also: the Windows input-desktop pair (display writes b5fa878b + pen/touch
injection 24a24734 both surviving a UAC prompt), the Apple display-sleep guard
(bc5f6a38), the gamescope corner-parked cursor (4b2d2d1e), the KWin custom-mode
selection (3a33a694), the tvOS glob warnings (cc8cccbe), and the Linux
starter/env docs revamp (66172753).

Nothing moved on the wire (protocol 2) or at the C ABI (13), so no embedder
rebuild and 0.18/0.19 peers keep mixing freely.

Headline: the whole pen/tablet input stack (P0–P5) — a pressure-sensitive stylus plane
across core wire, Linux, GameStream/Moonlight, Windows, iPad Pencil and Android. Plus
touch-injection fixes, cursor-DPI scaling, three Windows-host display/cursor fixes, a
gamepad same-PID conflict fix, and the Android mouse/keyboard (TV) regressions.

Release notes authored in-repo at docs/releases/v0.19.0.md (first release on the new flow;
CI seeds the release body from it). cargo update --workspace syncs the lock (versions only).

The 0.17.2 placeholder underestimated this cycle: Android mouse & keyboard
(physical mouse + capture, TV remote-as-pointer, IME text, clipboard), the new
committed-text input plane (InputKind::TextInput / HOST_CAP_TEXT_INPUT), and
the ChaCha20-Poly1305 session cipher are feature work — a minor, not a patch.
Wire/driver/C-ABI markers all unchanged (2 / 4 / 10): every addition is
negotiated or ignored by older peers.

MINOR, not the 0.15.1 originally planned: the 24 commits since v0.15.0 carry 7
features, and they are not incidental — they change the plugin runner's privilege
model. It stops holding the console's full-admin token (scoped plugin-token lane),
the Windows runner drops from SYSTEM to LocalService, public-registry plugin
installs are gated behind an explicit flag, and the systemd user unit is sandboxed.
Operators have workflow-visible changes to absorb (a plugin genuinely needing the
admin surface must now set PUNKTFUNK_MGMT_TOKEN; installing outside the @punktfunk
scope needs --allow-public-registry). A patch label would understate all of that,
and sdk-publish pushes this version straight to consumers.

The other 12 fixes are largely the pf-encode/zerocopy/capture/inject quality sweep
landing: teardown deadlocks, error-path leaks, a GL->CUDA copy race, an odd-height
NV12 overrun, a cursor-meta OOB read, plus the two loss-recovery gaps 0.15.0 left
open (Vulkan Video never got the LTR taint sweep; QSV's sweep skipped its modal
single-swept-slot case).

`WIRE_VERSION` stays 2 and the driver protocol stays v4 — pairings, clients and
installed drivers keep working. The C ABI moves 8 -> 9 (PunktfunkFrame grows
`received_ns`, so receipt is stamped at the session boundary rather than at the
embedder's pull); the gitignored Apple xcframework needs a rebuild for that to
reach the Apple clients. No OpenAPI path changes (45 before and after) — the new
plugin-token lane is auth-layer only — so api/openapi.json moves info.version only.

MINOR, not patch: 44 commits since v0.14.0 split 21 features / 19 fixes, and
/api/v1 gained the per-scanner library-toggle endpoints (additive, already
regenerated into api/openapi.json by c2bba134). sdk-publish pushes this version
to consumers, so a patch bump would understate a new API surface to anyone
pinning ~0.14.

Headline work is the desktop clients drawing level with the Apple revamp: the
Windows client picked up settings parity, a findable console UI in the header,
the shared clipboard (with a per-host toggle), PyroWave decode in the codec
picker, and D3D11VA-first decode + HDR pass-through on Intel; the Linux GTK4
client got the same category-map settings rebuild. Apple landed the intent-based
presenter rebuild and the Dynamic Island redesign. Also: the punktfunk-host
plugins CLI, per-scanner library toggles in the console, and PyroWave raw-dmabuf
zero-copy capture on the Linux NVIDIA host.

Notable fixes: LTR-RFI loss recovery under sustained loss, two encode teardown
memory-safety holes, the audio first-open retry that was leaving sessions
silent, and the GameStream stream-marker announcement on the compat plane.

Every workspace crate is on version.workspace = true, so this stayed a one-line
bump plus the lock sync. (fec-rs, pf-driver-proto, usbip-sim, the Windows driver
crates and pf-vkhdr-layer are deliberately versioned independently and stay put.)

MINOR, not patch: 31 commits since v0.13.0 carry 10 features, including a new
/api/v1/plugins surface with a regenerated OpenAPI spec + SDK client. Since
sdk-publish pushes this version to consumers, a patch bump would understate a
new API surface for anyone pinning ~0.13.

Headline work: GNOME 50 HDR screencast capture + Linux Main10 encode, PyroWave
4:4:4 + HDR end to end (Linux/Windows/Apple), the console-hosted plugin UI
surface, and the pyrowave perf work that lifted the 2.5 Gbps wall. Notable
fixes: the RSA host-identity keygen that broke every fresh Windows install on
0.13.0, and SDR negotiation on the Windows IDD-push path.

pf-clipboard / pf-inject / pf-vdisplay were still hardcoding 0.12.0 — the three
the 22b352c1 sweep missed. Switched to version.workspace = true so the next
bump stays one line. (fec-rs, pf-driver-proto and usbip-sim are deliberately
versioned independently and stay put.)

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 55e7f3fca9 feat(encode): native QSV backend — libvpl-sys + qsv.rs (Phases 0-3 of design/native-qsv-encoder.md)
Vendored MIT VPL dispatcher (static, trimmed tree, pin 674d015b/v2.17.0) built
via cmake+bindgen behind new feature 'qsv' (pf-encode + punktfunk-host forward).
qsv.rs: dispatcher session on the capture adapter (LUID-matched), SetHandle
D3D11, AsyncDepth=1/GopRefDist=1/VDEnc/CBR + HRD-off low-latency config,
GetSurfaceForEncode + GPU CopySubresourceRegion input (zero-copy, no readback
path), bounded sync-point poll, in-place reset with teardown escalation, no-IDR
bitrate retarget (Reset + StartNewSequence=OFF), 10-bit P010 HEVC-Main10/AV1,
HDR mastering/CLL SEI-OBU at IDR + BT.2020/PQ VSI, LTR-RFI via mfxExtRefListCtrl
(AMF slot policy port, Query-gated per codec, wire-index FrameOrder pinning).
Dispatch: native-first with ffmpeg fallback + PUNKTFUNK_QSV_FFMPEG hatch;

now answer natively for QSV.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 2064c0780c merge(core): reconcile the W7/W8 client refactor with origin's shared-clipboard feature
origin/main landed the shared clipboard (design/clipboard-and-file-transfer.md) while
this branch split quic/msgs.rs -> quic/{caps,control,...} and client.rs ->
client/{mod,control,worker,pump,planes,...} (W7) and deleted the two monoliths. The
feature had modified both deleted files, so its delta is re-applied onto the split
instead of resurrecting the monoliths:

  - HOST_CAP_CLIPBOARD                         -> quic/caps.rs
  - MSG_CLIP_* / CLIP_* consts, the six Clip*
structs, and their encode/decode impls -> quic/control.rs (beside the clock codecs)
  - CtrlRequest::{ClipControl,ClipOffer} +
    Negotiated.host_caps                        -> client/control.rs
  - WorkerArgs.{clip_event_tx,clip_cmd_rx}      -> client/worker.rs
  - CLIP_EVENT_QUEUE                            -> client/planes.rs
  - NativeClient clip fields, the 7 clip_* /

  - the control-task encode/decode arms and
    the clipboard-task spawn                     -> client/pump.rs

Cargo.lock reconciled (adds pf-clipboard), punktfunk-host/Cargo.toml unions the W6
pf-* subsystem deps with pf-clipboard, and include/punktfunk_core.h is the cbindgen
union (clipboard + rumble C-ABI). punktfunk-core builds --all-features and its 174
lib tests pass, including quic::tests::clip_loopback.

The host half of the shared clipboard (design/clipboard-and-file-transfer.md §4),
ported from feat/shared-clipboard (6bd8c18b) into the post-W6 crate shape: the
backends land as a pf-clipboard subsystem crate (the pf-inject/pf-capture
pattern) instead of growing punktfunk-host back out, and the ~340-line
punktfunk1.rs integration is re-implemented against the native.rs/control.rs
split that replaced it.

pf-clipboard:
- host::wayland — ext-data-control-v1 (KWin / wlroots / Sway / Hyprland).
- host::mutter — GNOME via Mutter's *direct* org.gnome.Mutter.RemoteDesktop
clipboard (no data-control at any GNOME version; the xdg portal needs an
interactive grant a headless host can't answer).
- host::windows + host::winfmt — Win32 clipboard on a hidden message-loop
window: WM_CLIPBOARDUPDATE listener + OLE delayed rendering (WM_RENDERFORMAT)
  for text / CF_HTML / RTF / PNG.
- host::session — the backend-agnostic coordinator bridging HostClipboard to
the QUIC clipboard plane (offers, fetch accept-loop, remote offers, pastes).
- A portable facade (policy / enabled / cap_advertised / ClipCoordCmd / start /
  spawn_decline_loop) so the orchestrator compiles cfg-free on every platform;
ClipCoordCmd moves into the crate (it was host-owned before).

punktfunk-host glue:
- handshake.rs advertises HOST_CAP_CLIPBOARD via pf_clipboard::cap_advertised.
- serve_session starts the coordinator (gated on a real compositor — the
synthetic source stays out of the session clipboard) and spawns the
CLIP_FETCH_UNAVAILABLE decline loop when the policy is on but no backend bound.
- control.rs gains the ClipControl/ClipOffer arms + the host-offer forward
branch, and the e2e session test (cap advertise → ClipState ack with
BACKEND_UNAVAILABLE → fetch decline) rides in native.rs's tests.

Still opt-in default OFF (PUNKTFUNK_CLIPBOARD). Remaining: the macOS client
(design §5) — then this becomes user-visible.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 27a5d8daac refactor(host/W6.2): extract virtual-display orchestration into the pf-vdisplay crate
vdisplay.rs + vdisplay/* (the per-compositor Linux backends — KWin zkde-screencast,
wlroots swaymsg, Mutter RemoteDesktop, Hyprland — and the Windows IddCx/pf-vdisplay
driver backend, behind one VirtualDisplay trait; the mode-conflict admission
registry, the display policy/identity/custom-preset state, and the session-env /
gamescope routing) move into crates/pf-vdisplay (plan §W6). The DDC/CI panel-power
control (used only here) and the KWin zkde protocol XML move with it. This
completes the host-crate decomposition: capture, encode, inject, and vdisplay are
now four subsystem crates over the shared leaves, and punktfunk-host is the
orchestrator (serve/supervisor + native + gamestream + mgmt).

Coupling breaks (all down-only, cargo-tree acyclic):
- capture::dxgi identity -> pf_frame::dxgi; win_display/monitor_devnode/
  console_session_mismatch -> pf-win-display leaf; can_open_another_session ->
pf-encode (the NVENC session-budget admission gate — acyclic peer edge).
- The registry's DisplayCreated/DisplayReleased emits into the host SSE event bus
invert to a leaf hook: pf-vdisplay emits a neutral DisplayEvent to a
host-registered DISPLAY_EVENT_SINK, so it never reaches the orchestrator's
  events module.
- The IddCx driver module is renamed pf_vdisplay -> driver (its old name collided
with the crate name through the host's `mod vdisplay` shim glob).

The host keeps `mod vdisplay { pub use pf_vdisplay::* }` so every crate::vdisplay::*
path (serve/mgmt/native/the capture FrameChannelSender seam) is unchanged; the
heavy deps (wayland/ashpd/tokio + the zkde protocol) moved with the crate.
Co-authored: a fail-closed IOCTL-reply-length security fix (reject short/zeroed
pf-vdisplay driver replies before trusting protocol_version/target_id/wudf_pid/luid,
security-review 2026-07-17) rides this commit in the moved driver module.

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (pf-vdisplay + host nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave
--all-targets) + pf-vdisplay 63/63 + host 167/167 tests; Windows clippy -D warnings

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 f6c6e4e594 refactor(host/W6.2): extract the input-injection backends into the pf-inject crate
inject.rs + inject/* (the per-OS injectors — wlroots virtual-input, KWin
fake_input, libei/reis, gamescope-EI on Linux; SendInput on Windows — plus the
virtual-gamepad HID stack: DualSense/DualShock4/Switch Pro/Steam Controller/Deck
over uhid/usbip and the Windows UMDF drivers, the proto codecs, the injector
service, and the uhid manager) move into crates/pf-inject behind the
InputInjector trait (plan §W6). It consumes punktfunk_core::input (the neutral
GamepadEvent/InputEvent vocabulary, moved to core in W5) + the pf-driver-proto
wire contract, and reaches pf-capture only for the Windows gamepad-channel
WUDFHost check + the resident-mouse compose-kick hook.

The one inject->vdisplay coupling (the libei gamescope-EI backend needs the EIS
relay socket path) is broken via a leaf: gamescope_ei_socket_file moves to
pf-paths as the shared contract — the gamescope producer (host vdisplay) keeps
its session-env-lock wrapper around it, the libei consumer (pf-inject) reads it
directly post-retarget. The host keeps a `mod inject { pub use pf_inject::* }`
shim so every crate::inject::* path (the native/gamestream input planes + devtest)
is unchanged; the heavy input deps (wayland/reis/xkbcommon/usbip + the KWin
fake-input protocol XML) moved with the crate.

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (pf-inject + host nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave
--all-targets) + pf-inject 69/69 + host 230/230 tests; Windows clippy -D warnings
(pf-inject --all-targets + host nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets) Finished exit 0.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 94ca4041ca refactor(host/W6.2): extract the frame-capture backends into the pf-capture crate
capture/linux (PipeWire portal) + capture/windows (IDD direct-push: dxgi
mechanics, idd_push + submodules, synthetic_nv12) + pwinit move into
crates/pf-capture behind the Capturer trait + synthetic sources (plan §W6).
The crate speaks pf-frame (CapturedFrame/PixelFormat + the DXGI identity),
pf-zerocopy (CUDA import), and the pf-win-display leaves, and NEVER pf-encode —
the capture->encode edge is one-way. This completes the deliberate capture/encode
crate split (the invasive path the plan had merged into one pf-media): capture
and encode are now separate subsystem crates sharing only pf-frame.

Four seams keep the capturer off the orchestrator:
- VirtualOutput is EXPLODED into primitives (remote_fd/node_id/preferred_mode/
  keepalive) by the host facade, so pf-capture never depends on the vdisplay type;
- FrameChannelSender: the sealed-channel delivery is a Send+Sync closure the host
facade builds from the pf-vdisplay control device + send_frame_channel IOCTL and
hands in; ChannelBroker holds the closure instead of the control HANDLE (the
  whole-desktop handle-duplication security boundary is byte-for-byte unchanged);
- console_session_mismatch + desktop_bounds live in pf-win-display (leaf peers);
- pwinit moves here (audio caller -> pf_capture::pwinit).

The host keeps capture.rs as a thin BRIDGE: it re-exports the vocabulary + capturer
types (every crate::capture::* path is unchanged) and keeps open_portal_monitor /
capture_virtual_output, which resolve the ZeroCopyPolicy + FrameChannelSender and
call into pf-capture. verify_is_wudfhost + install_gpu_pref_hook are re-exported
(the gamepad-channel bootstrap + the main.rs subcommand consume them).

Co-developed: the resident-HID-mouse compose-kick hook (HID_COMPOSE_KICK + the
HID-first cursor kick + _display_wake) rides this commit into pf-capture; the host
mouse_windows registration side lands separately on top.

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (pf-capture + host nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave
--all-targets) + host tests 299/299; Windows clippy -D warnings (pf-capture
--all-targets + host nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets) Finished exit 0.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 9a36ea2132 refactor(host/W6.2): extract the video encode backends into the pf-encode crate
encode.rs + encode/* (NVENC, VAAPI, native AMF, AMF/QSV ffmpeg, direct-SDK
NVENC/CUDA, raw Vulkan-Video, PyroWave, openh264) move into crates/pf-encode
behind one Encoder trait + open_video selector (plan §W6). The crate speaks the
shared frame vocabulary (pf-frame: CapturedFrame/PixelFormat + the DXGI identity
D3d11Frame/make_device) and pf-zerocopy (CUDA context/buffers), and NEVER
pf-capture — the capture→encode edge is one-way (ZeroCopyPolicy, prior commit).

Dep moves: the heavy encoder deps (ffmpeg-next, the NVENC SDK, openh264,
pyrowave-sys) move from the host to pf-encode; the host's
nvenc/amf-qsv/vulkan-encode/pyrowave features now FORWARD to pf-encode/*. The
host keeps a mod-encode shim (pub use pf_encode) so every crate::encode::* path
(negotiator + GameStream/native/mgmt planes) is unchanged.

resolve_render_adapter_luid moves from the host's windows/win_adapter.rs into
pf-gpu (both pf-encode and pf-capture need it as a peer of GPU selection); its 5
call sites (encode amf/nvenc, capture idd_push/synthetic_nv12, vdisplay manager)
rewire to pf_gpu::resolve_render_adapter_luid and win_adapter.rs is deleted.
pf-frame's make_device gains a # Safety section (public-unsafe-fn lint, latent
since the pf-frame carve — a full-workspace -D warnings clippy catches it).

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (pf-encode + host nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave
--all-targets) + 13/13 pf-encode + 299/299 host tests; Windows clippy -D warnings
(pf-encode nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets + host nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets)

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 ccc4b08d45 refactor(host/W6.2): extract the Windows display-topology cluster into the pf-win-display leaf crate
windows/{win_display,monitor_devnode,display_events}.rs move into
crates/pf-win-display: the CCD/GDI path-activation + mode-set + HDR
advanced-colour + source-rect helpers, the PnP monitor-devnode enable/disable
lever, and the WM_DISPLAYCHANGE / device-arrival watch. The coming pf-capture
crate's IDD-push capturer consumes all three; the host's pf-vdisplay backend
consumes win_display + monitor_devnode. A leaf lets both depend on them as a
PEER instead of the capturer reaching back into the orchestrator (plan §W6).

win_display's one external tie (crate::vdisplay::Mode) becomes the underlying
punktfunk_core::Mode; the cluster is otherwise self-contained (pf-paths for the
state file, serde_json for it, windows). pub(crate) items bump to pub at the
boundary; win_display carries a module-level allow(missing_safety_doc) to keep
the pre-carve behavior (the FFI helpers were pub(crate) unsafe fn with prose
safety docs — the lint only fires once they're pub, and this is an internal
publish=false leaf). The host imports the three modules at its crate root, so
every crate::{win_display,monitor_devnode,display_events}::* path is unchanged.

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (leaf empty + host
nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave --all-targets); Windows clippy -D warnings
(pf-win-display --all-targets + host nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets) Finished exit 0.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 b168790e0a refactor(host/W6.2): extract the shared frame/format vocabulary into the pf-frame leaf crate
The captured-frame types both capture (producer) and encode (consumer) speak —
PixelFormat, OutputFormat, CursorOverlay, CapturedFrame, FramePayload,
DmabufFrame, drm_fourcc — move into crates/pf-frame, alongside the small pure
helpers that ride the same seam: hdr (HDR static metadata / in-band SEI),
metronome (the metronomic-stall detector), thread_qos (per-thread scheduling
QoS), session_tuning (Windows process tuning), and the Windows DXGI capture
IDENTITY (WinCaptureTarget, D3d11Frame, pack_luid, make_device + the GPU
scheduling-priority hardening it applies) (plan §W6).

This is the crate that breaks the capture<->encode cycle: FramePayload's GPU
variants own their backends from BELOW (Cuda -> pf_zerocopy::DeviceBuffer,
D3d11 -> dxgi::D3d11Frame), so encode can speak the vocabulary without a path to
capture, and vice versa. The Windows DXGI identity moving here lets capture,
encode, and pf-vdisplay share ONE WinCaptureTarget/device factory instead of the
old capture<->encode<->vdisplay reach-in.

The host keeps thin facades: capture.rs re-exports the vocabulary
(crate::capture::{PixelFormat,…} unchanged); capture/windows/dxgi.rs keeps the
win32u GPU-preference hook + HDR/video-engine converters + self-test and
re-exports the identity; native.rs re-exports boost_thread_priority from
pf_frame. crate::hdr/metronome/session_tuning callers rewired to pf_frame::*.
metronome's Metronome::new gained a Default impl (new_without_default fires once
the type is public across the crate boundary).

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (pf-frame --all-targets + host
nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave --all-targets) + 9/9 pf-frame tests; Windows clippy
nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets Finished exit 0.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 85bc5b9a3f refactor(host/W6.2): extract the Linux zero-copy GPU plumbing into the pf-zerocopy leaf crate
linux/zerocopy/* (CUDA context/buffers + EGL/Vulkan dmabuf import + the isolated
import worker) and linux/dmabuf_fence.rs move wholesale into crates/pf-zerocopy,
so the coming pf-frame vocabulary crate (FramePayload::Cuda owns a DeviceBuffer)
and the pf-encode/pf-capture subsystem crates can reach the GPU plumbing without
the host orchestrator in between (plan §W6). Content stays Linux-only; the crate
compiles to an empty lib elsewhere, so dependents carry a plain dependency.

drm_fourcc deliberately does NOT move: it consumes the frame vocabulary
(PixelFormat), which sits ABOVE pf-zerocopy — it lives with capture for now and
moves into pf-frame next. cuda's ffi re-export bumps pub(crate)->pub (the raw
CUdeviceptr vocabulary is consumed across the crate boundary by the encode
backends). A crate::zerocopy shim module keeps every existing path valid until
capture/encode themselves move out.

Verified: Linux clippy -D warnings (pf-zerocopy --all-targets + host
nvenc,vulkan-encode,pyrowave --all-targets) + 17/17 pf-zerocopy tests + 321/321
host tests; Windows clippy nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets Finished exit 0.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 6ea036766a refactor(host/W6.1): extract GPU vendor/adapter detection into the pf-gpu leaf crate
Fourth de-coupling for the host crate carve (plan §W6.1 leaf). gpu.rs (inventory,
selection preference, active-session accounting — deps only pf-host-config + pf-paths, no
subsystem refs) moves to a new pf-gpu leaf so pf-encode/pf-capture/pf-vdisplay can consult
the selected GPU without an orchestrator edge. ~50 crate::gpu:: sites repoint to pf_gpu::;
the ~30 pub(crate) items become pub (crate API). assign_ids gets a macOS-only
allow(dead_code) (used only by the Linux/Windows enumerate arms).

Verified: Linux (home-worker-5) clippy -p pf-gpu -p punktfunk-host --all-targets
-D warnings + pf-gpu tests (12 pass); Windows (192.168.1.158) clippy --features
nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets green.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 3495d189e1 refactor(host/W6.1): extract the config() global into the pf-host-config leaf crate
Third de-coupling for the host crate carve (plan §W6.1 leaf). HostConfig + the config()
OnceLock (config.rs, pure std, zero deps) move to a new pf-host-config leaf so every
subsystem crate (pf-encode/pf-capture/pf-vdisplay/pf-gpu) can read process config WITHOUT
depending on the orchestrator. 34 crate::config::config() call sites across 19 files
repoint to pf_host_config::config(). thread_qos stays in the host for now (it calls
session_tuning::on_hot_thread — its own leaf-ification rides the encode carve).

Granular-crate decision (supersedes the plan's single pf-media): split capture/encode/
vdisplay into separate crates rather than one broad crate — the capture↔encode cycle is
broken by a shared frame-types leaf, and vdisplay→encode (can_open_another_session) is a
legal one-way edge since encode never references vdisplay.

Verified: Linux (home-worker-5) clippy -p pf-host-config -p punktfunk-host --all-targets
-D warnings; Windows (192.168.1.158) clippy --features nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets green.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 c42ce88921 refactor(host/W6.1): extract secret/config-dir helpers into the pf-paths leaf crate
Second de-coupling for the host crate carve (plan §W6.1 leaf). config_dir /
create_private_dir / write_secret_file (+ the Windows DACL helpers) were pub(crate) in the
gamestream junk drawer, yet consumed by vdisplay, stats, gpu, library, mgmt_token,
native_pairing and the Windows service — many of which become pf-media / pf-vdisplay, for
which crate::gamestream would be an illegal upward edge. New leaf crate pf-paths (pure std
+ tracing) owns them; ~40 call sites across 14 files repoint to pf_paths::. gamestream
keeps only its own concerns.

Verified: Linux (home-worker-5) clippy -p pf-paths -p punktfunk-host --all-targets
-D warnings + tests (347 pass, incl. secrets_are_written_owner_only); Windows
(192.168.1.158) clippy --features nvenc,amf-qsv --all-targets green.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 4c3b11445c feat(host): vendor PyroWave + minimal Granite subset as crates/pyrowave-sys
Phase 0 of design/pyrowave-codec-plan.md — the opt-in wired-LAN ultra-low-
latency codec. Vendored at upstream 509e4f88 (API 0.4.0, Granite 44362775,
volk + vulkan-headers pins in PUNKTFUNK-VENDOR.txt), pruned to the 6.6 MB
the standalone no-renderer build needs; scripts/vendor-pyrowave.sh
reproduces the tree (a pin bump is protocol-affecting, plan §4.2).

build.rs drives the wrapper CMakeLists (static archives incl. a static
C-API lib upstream only ships shared) + bindgen over pyrowave.h; Linux and
Windows only, empty stub elsewhere (Apple gets a native Metal port, §4.7).
Offline-safe by construction: no network, no system lib, vendored Vulkan
headers — same model as the opus dep (flatpak builder has no network).

Phase-0 validation on .21 (RTX 5070 Ti, driver 610.43.03):
- upstream pyrowave-c-test + interop test (incl. dmabuf/DRM-modifier
Vulkan<->Vulkan) pass, from the pristine AND the pruned tree
- GPU kernel times at ~1.6 bpp noise: encode/decode 0.090/0.042 ms @800p,
  0.146/0.067 @1080p, 0.226/0.103 @1440p, 0.477/0.201 @4K — order of
magnitude under NVENC's 1-2 ms retrieve, CBR lands within ~100 B of

Bumps [workspace.package] version 0.10.1 -> 0.11.0 (14 workspace crates) and
syncs Cargo.lock (versions-only). Apple MARKETING_VERSION / Android versionName
are set from the release tag by CI, so no client manifest changes; the nested
Windows-driver workspace keeps its independent 0.0.1 version.

Bumps [workspace.package] version 0.9.2 -> 0.10.0 (14 workspace crates). Apple
MARKETING_VERSION / Android versionName are set from the release tag by CI, so no
client manifest changes; the nested Windows-driver workspace keeps its independent
0.0.1 version.

Also syncs Cargo.lock: the version bump for the 14 members, plus dropping the
now-orphaned crossbeam-channel entry the Windows builtin removal (ef580825) left
behind (it dropped the dep from the manifest but not the lock), so
`cargo build --locked` (ci.yml / deb.yml) stays green.
