feat(client): 4:4:4 can stay on hardware, and the overlay says what you actually got
Two halves of the same honesty problem (client-gaps handoff items 1+2,
done together as the handoff asked).
The presenter learns full chroma: `vkframe_plane_views` accepts the
2-plane 4:4:4 pool formats (8-bit, and the 10-bit 3PACK16 sibling) —
what NVIDIA's Vulkan Video reports for HEVC RExt decode — with the
accepted set extracted into `vkframe_plane_formats` and pinned by a
decision-table test. The CSC shader needed nothing: its 4:2:0 siting
correction already self-disables when the plane widths match. The VAAPI
leg gets the same treatment (NV24 in `drm_fourcc_for` and the dmabuf
import, full-size chroma plane), and the Vulkan decoder's sw-format
gate admits NV24/P410. 3-plane 4:4:4 stays rejected — it needs a third
CSC binding — and demotes cleanly like every other unsupported format.
Design call (the handoff's fork, argued here as requested): (B)+(C),
not (A). No capability probe gates VIDEO_CAP_444 — software decode is
the guaranteed display floor on both OSes (swscale → RGBA), the decoder
ladder demotes on its own, and a probe-gated bit would turn the switch
inert on exactly the boxes that rely on the fallback. What (A) wanted
from a prediction, the overlay now delivers as ground truth:
The Detailed tier prints the encoder's target next to the measured
rate — `19.4 Mb/s · target 20 Mb/s (auto)` — and the resolved chroma,
`4:4:4→4:2:0` when the host declined the ask (mirroring `HDR→SDR`).
The target is live: `NativeClient::current_bitrate_kbps()` mirrors
every BitrateChanged ack, so an Automatic session's ABR re-targets are
visible as they move. This is the figure whose absence let the
settings-drop bug (

Three silent console outages in one week (0x1 / 0xFFFFFFFF / 0x41306), each a different proximate cause of the same structural defect: the console's lifecycle was owned by Task Scheduler — one best-effort start per boot/logon/install, no retry on a plain non-zero exit, no watchdog — while the product already shipped a real supervisor. The service now supervises the console as a second child slot: plain session-0 spawn (suspended → own no-breakaway kill-on-close job → resume), started only once the host has written mgmt-token + cert.pem + key.pem (the cert race dies by construction), secrets read from their files at every respawn, bun's stdout finally captured in logs\web.log, doubling backoff 0.5s→60s that never gives up. Session switches never touch it; a service stop takes it down via the job. The PunktfunkWeb task is retired: web setup slims to password + legacy task delete + firewall, the 127-line web-run.cmd batch supervisor is deleted, an [InstallDelete] entry reaps the stale copy, and service install now sets SCM crash-recovery actions (restart 1s/5s/60s) since the console rides on the service process. The toggle has been stored, profileable and rendered in two settings UIs since profiles landed, and nothing read it. Windows grabbed the keyboard whenever input was captured, setting or no setting; Linux never grabbed at all, because the grab sat behind `#[cfg(windows)]` with a comment deferring the compositor story to "the shells" — which never picked it up. `Settings.inhibit_shortcuts` now reaches the presenter and gates the grab, on both platforms. SDL3 already maps `SDL_SetWindowKeyboardGrab` onto `zwp_keyboard_shortcuts_inhibit_manager_v1` on Wayland and `XGrabKeyboard` (plus `_XWAYLAND_MAY_GRAB_KEYBOARD`) on X11, so dropping the cfg is the Linux fix. Capture state still gates it, so releasing input hands the chords straight back, and the desktop mouse model never grabs. A compositor with no shortcuts-inhibit global says so once instead of failing silently — at debug under gamescope, which has no shortcuts to inhibit in the first place. Fallout from the documentation sweep: verifying doc claims against the code
turned up defects in the code and the shipped templates. Mostly comments that
describe behaviour we no longer have — which is how the docs went wrong in the
first place, since someone reads the comment and writes the page.
The one that mattered: a fresh deb/RPM/Arch install could not start the host at
all. The unit's `EnvironmentFile=` had no `-`, making host.env mandatory, and no
package creates it — all three ship only the templates under /usr/share and the
postinst merely prints the copy command. So `systemctl --user enable --now
punktfunk-host` died on "Failed to load environment files". Every field in
HostConfig::from_env resolves through unwrap_or/filter/None, so absent means all
defaults, exactly like a hand-run `serve`; the Nix module already wrote it as
`-${environmentFile}`. The Deck installer's own generated unit gets the same
prefix for the case where an operator later removes the file.
Shipped templates: PUNKTFUNK_SECURE_DDA is read by nothing (DDA/WGC are gone;
IDD-push is the sole Windows capture path and the secure desktop is
unconditional), so it stops being written into a fresh host.env;
PUNKTFUNK_INPUT_BACKEND offered a `uinput` value that does not exist and omitted
`kwin`, which is what a KDE session actually resolves to; PUNKTFUNK_RENDER_ADAPTER
no longer claims to pick a "Desktop-Duplication" GPU.
Comments corrected rather than deleted, since each explains a real why:
PUNKTFUNK_10BIT is default-on with explicit-off grammar, not an operator opt-in;
GNOME reaches EIS through Mutter's direct RemoteDesktop API, so it needs no portal
approval and is headless-capable; and the host does not run in session 0 — the
service is the session-0 supervisor and the host runs as SYSTEM in the interactive
console session, which is why game_term has to bind the input desktop at all.
packaging/bazzite/update-punktfunk.sh is now installed to /usr/share/punktfunk/,
so the command the docs promised exists.

~1150 feat/fix commits landed since v0.19 and the docs drifted badly. This is a full sweep of every page against the code as shipped: ~280 verified corrections, nine new pages, and one deletion. The worst of what was wrong: the quickstart's five-minute path could not work (`serve` never started the web console, so step 3 had no PIN to read); every packaged Linux host runs `serve --gamestream` while security.md told readers to leave GameStream off; HDR was documented as Windows-only; `PUNKTFUNK_SECURE_DDA` was documented as a working knob that nothing reads; `PUNKTFUNK_INPUT_BACKEND` listed a `uinput` value that does not exist and named libei for KDE instead of kwin; README linked three pages deleted on 2026-07-05; and the rpm-ostree update command pointed at a script no package installs. Completeness: about half of what shipped since v0.19 had no page at all. New: support-matrix (what works where, from 217 verified capability cells), input (mouse/touch/pen — and the in-stream chords, so the docs finally say how to get your mouse back), client-settings, profiles-and-links, game-library, clipboard, wake-on-lan, hdr, uninstall. Updating existed but had zero inbound links. status.md is gone: its facts moved into the support matrix, its shell stays as a redirect so the public URL does not 404. roadmap.md is themes now, not a feature checklist — checkboxes are what rotted. Debian is no longer claimed. The .deb's Depends resolve against Ubuntu images, nothing in CI builds or tests Debian, and Debian 12 is below the glibc 2.39 floor. Field report (RX 5700 / SteamOS): 10-bit HEVC "unsupported" — but the GPU was
never the blocker (RADV probed Main10 fine on that box). The session stayed SDR
because stock gamescope offers no 10-bit PQ capture formats and nothing shipped
our pipewire-hdr build outside the Bazzite sysext, while PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR
additionally defaulted off everywhere. Close all three gaps:
- PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR now defaults ON (explicit-off grammar, the flip the
config comment planned post-canary). Safe by construction: the +pfhdr banner
probe, managed-spawn term, and client 10-bit cap keep stock-gamescope boxes on
the exact 8-bit path. The nix module's gamescopeHdr (default true now) only
controls whether the patched binary is on PATH; it no longer sets the env.
- SteamOS: new scripts/steamdeck/build-gamescope.sh builds the HDR gamescope in
the same pf2 trixie distrobox (apt dep list validated by a full build in a
debian:trixie container), installs ~/.local/bin/punktfunk-gamescope, and
maintains PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_BIN in host.env ONLY while the binary passes its
on-glass --version/+pfhdr check — a stale absolute override would break
session spawning, not just HDR. Wired into install.sh (§3b), update.sh
(retrofit), and rebuild-check.sh (ldd-probes it like the host binary).
- Arch: build-sysext.sh gains a --gamescope fold-in (banner-verified by
execution, host-image-only), and punktfunk-host optdepends the companion.
Deliberately NO CI-published host sysext: per the 2026-07-22 packaging
verdict a prebuilt SteamOS host breaks on A/B soname bumps (and /var is
per-partition-set), so arch.yml records that instead — SteamOS hosts use the
distrobox flow above.
Also fixes a latent bug that made build-sysext.sh fail every invocation as
documented: a literal `}` inside `${1:?usage …{host,client}…}` terminates the
expansion early and corrupts $PKG (caught by the new synthetic-package test,
which also covers the fold-in, the unmarked-gamescope refusal, and the
client-image guard).

Adds a VirtualHere section to the plugins page — what it is, that both halves of VirtualHere are yours to install and licence, that the Devices tab writes a name-based rule so it survives the couch rebooting, and that Diagnostics is where to look when nothing happens. States the coverage limit up front rather than letting somebody discover it: there is no VirtualHere server for iOS or tvOS, so those clients cannot pass devices through, and nothing on our side can change that. Cuts the automation.md recipe from 75 lines to a pointer. It now leads with "use the plugin" and keeps only the zero-code two-hook version for people who would rather not install one — with its trade-offs stated instead of implied: the address is hard-coded so it breaks when the couch reboots, and an abnormal stream end strands the device on the host. Those two failures are exactly what the plugin exists to fix, so the reader gets to make an informed choice. Not build-verified: docs-site does not build standalone in this checkout. Checked by hand that Callout is in fumadocs' default MDX components with a valid `warn` type, that the JSX balances, and that the cross-page anchor matches github-slugger of the heading. The U3.1 leg of planning:host-update-from-web-console.md. The Deck's on-device install gets the Update-now button with no opt-in (user-owned, no root): update.sh --pull runs under systemd-run --user so the script's own restart of punktfunk-host can't kill it mid-build (a child in our cgroup would die with us). Outcome without version equality — which a source rebuild can't promise: a failed build leaves the host alive to report it (unit watched to failure, log attached); a successful one restarts us, and the new source_build intent flag makes intent-present-at-boot itself the success signal (the script only restarts the host after a successful install). apply.post.ts intercepts the one proxied route that restarts the host: the console password is re-verified per apply (login throttle shared, stripped before forwarding) so a 7-day cookie alone can't do it. New Sec-Fetch-Site same-origin check on every mutating request (login CSRF included). The card's apply flow: confirm dialog → live-session force escalation → download/verify/restart progress rendered from the last snapshot while polls fail (the host and, on Windows, this very server restart mid-flow) → durable success/failure from last_result. feat(host): a frame limiter for the game, not for the stream
PUNKTFUNK_MAX_FPS caps how fast the compositor lets the game render. It deliberately does NOT touch the session: the client still negotiates and receives its full rate, because the encode loop re-encodes the held frame whenever the compositor produced no new one, and a repeat of an unchanged picture is an almost-empty P-frame. So a 60-capped game on a 120 Hz session still puts 120 frames a second on the wire — and the GPU time the game gives up goes to capture and encode instead, which is the point (on a laptop or a handheld, it goes to heat and battery too). Capping the stream would be a different and mostly unwanted feature: it hands the client fewer frames than it asked for and saves the game's GPU nothing. gamescope is the compositor that has the lever, so it is the one that gets it: the rate becomes --nested-refresh, which is what gamescope clamps the game to. All three sessions we own take it — the bare spawn's -r, the managed gamescope-session-plus wrapper's PF_HZ, and the SteamOS PATH shim's. In the managed path the limit lands on PF_HZ alone and NOT on CUSTOM_REFRESH_RATES, so the mode the session advertises stays the client's — that is what makes games see the real refresh rather than the box's EDID. Two scoping notes. Under gamescope the cap is the nested output's rate, so everything it composites moves at it, not the game alone; there is only the one output. And the attach path (PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_NODE) mirrors a gamescope we do not own, so it has no lever to pull and is untouched. "The mouse cursor isn't included in the captured image" sat in Known Limits contradicting the section above it, which already explained that the host draws the pointer back in. Both are half-true and the difference matters to a reader choosing whether to install anything: gamescope does leave the pointer out, you do still see one, and what it costs is a full pass over every frame — plus, on the fastest encode paths, the pointer itself, because a fixed-function front end has nowhere to blend it. Which is the real argument for `punktfunk-gamescope` on a box that will never turn HDR on, and the page never made it. Release notes gain the spawn-flag verification and the packaging wiring. feat(encode/vulkan): probe the device instead of guessing — AV1 10-bit + zero-CSC HDR
Three fixes to the same mistake: deciding what the Vulkan Video backend can do
from a table in our heads rather than from the driver, and routing everything
that didn't fit to libav VAAPI — where a session loses real RFI recovery and
the cursor blend for no reason the hardware asked for.
**Capability probe, per codec AND depth.** `probe_encode_support`'s "is there
an encode queue" boolean becomes `VulkanEncodeCaps { supported, eight_bit,
ten_bit }`, answered by `vkGetPhysicalDeviceVideoCapabilitiesKHR` against the
very profile chain the session open builds. So the dispatcher's prediction
cannot disagree with reality: a capable device keeps the Vulkan path, an
incapable one routes to VAAPI BEFORE burning a failed open, and the
cursor-blend mirror stays honest for free. This is the shape the direct-SDK
NVENC path already uses for its codec GUIDs.
**AV1 10-bit.** It was excluded on a guess about driver coverage; now the
device answers. `color_config()` carries `high_bitdepth` + the BT.2020/PQ CICP
triplet in both the `StdVideoAV1ColorConfig` and the sequence-header OBU we
bit-pack ourselves — they must stay identical or the driver's frame OBUs parse
against a header we didn't write. `high_bitdepth` sits BEFORE the CICP bytes,
so getting it wrong doesn't just mislabel the depth, it puts every following
field one bit out of phase; the new test reads the packed bits back.
**Zero-CSC RGB-direct in HDR.** The EFC probe assumed BT.709 and BGRA. It now
asks for the model this session's colourimetry needs (`MODEL_YCBCR_2020` for
10-bit — the extension has always had it) and for the CAPTURED format as an
encode-source format, and the session create-info selects the matching model.
An HDR session with no pointer to composite therefore hands the captured
buffer straight to the fixed-function front end and runs no host CSC at all.
Sessions that DO composite a pointer keep the compute CSC, unchanged: the EFC
cannot blend, and that rule outranks everything.
Also: `can_encode_10bit` on AMD/Intel now reports the union of VAAPI's and
Vulkan Video's answers instead of VAAPI's alone. `open_amd_intel` tries Vulkan
first and falls back, so either one being able to encode Main10 makes the
session 10-bit-capable — answering `false` because only one of them said yes
stranded encodable HDR sessions at 8 bits.

feat(encode/vulkan): Vulkan Video encodes 10-bit, so AMD/Intel HDR keeps the good path
The Vulkan Video backend was 8-bit for no structural reason — the API has `VK_VIDEO_COMPONENT_BIT_DEPTH_10_BIT` and `PROFILE_IDC_MAIN_10` in the very fields this pinned to 8 and MAIN, and AMD VCN and Intel both encode Main10. It was six hardcoded sites, and the cost of leaving them was paid twice over: an HDR session had to take libav VAAPI, losing real RFI loss recovery AND the compute CSC's cursor blend — which on gamescope is the only way the pointer reaches the stream at all, since gamescope has no embedded-cursor mode. An HDR session now opens a Main10 profile with 10-bit component depths, a `G10X6_B10X6R10X6_2PLANE_420_UNORM_3PACK16` picture + DPB, and an SPS carrying `bit_depth_*_minus8 = 2` with the BT.2020/PQ CICP triplet instead of BT.709. `rgb2yuv10.comp` is the CSC's twin, and the two interesting parts of it are: * it is a PURE 3x3 matrix. The samples arrive already PQ-encoded (gamescope composites into the PQ container), so BT.2020 NCL applies to the code values as they are — there is no transfer function to apply here and applying one would be wrong; * the scratch planes are `R16`/`RG16`, not the picture's plane formats. The 10-bit ycbcr plane formats are not storage-image formats, so the shader writes the value into the HIGH bits by hand (`code10 << 6`, hence the `64/65535` factor and not `1/1023`) into planes that are merely SIZE-compatible with the picture's — which is all `vkCmdCopyImage` requires. Scope and safety: * HEVC only. AV1 10-bit encode has far thinner driver coverage, and a session open is not the place to gamble on it — those stay on VAAPI, as does a device that fails the Main10 profile query inside the open (the pre-existing "failed Vulkan open falls back to VAAPI" net, no new probe needed). * HDR pins the compute-CSC arm over the EFC RGB-direct one, which the EFC could not serve anyway: its fixed-function conversion is 8-bit BT.709 narrow with no knob for BT.2020. * `open_inner` binds `hdr` to the parameter-set HEADER bytes, so the depth flag is `ten_bit` there — the one name collision this change had to route around. |

docs: the gamescope path is no longer 8-bit-only
Five pages asserted "gamescope's capture output is 8-bit" as a flat fact. It is a fact about the STOCK binary, so say that instead, and say what to install to change it: a new "HDR on gamescope" section covering the extra package, the two knobs, what has to line up for a session to go HDR at all, and the two things that surprise people — SDR content rides the same PQ stream at `--hdr-sdr-content-nits`, and AMD/Intel HDR sessions currently lose the composited pointer (the encode path that carries 10-bit is the one that cannot blend it). The roadmap's "parked / blocked" entry keeps the half that is still blocked (Mutter's `RecordVirtual` is SDR-only through the GNOME 51 dev branch) and drops the half that no longer is. |

feat(session): the stats overlay scales with the display's DPI
The stream chrome — stats OSD, capture hint, start banner, resize label — was hardcoded at 14 px with 12/10/8 px insets. The overlay composites into the swapchain 1:1 in PHYSICAL pixels, so on a 4K panel at 200 % all of it rendered at half its intended physical size: fine on a 1080p monitor, a squint on a HiDPI laptop. FrameCtx now carries a scale — SDL's window display scale (DPI × the display's content scale) times a PUNKTFUNK_OSD_SCALE preference — and every metric moved into a `base` module that is multiplied by it. Re-read per frame and quantized into the damage key, so dragging the window to a differently-scaled monitor re-renders at the new size rather than keeping the stale one. Sanitized because SDL returns 0.0 when it cannot resolve the window's display, which would collapse the panel to nothing. Two details worth keeping: the face is re-derived at the scaled size rather than the canvas transformed, because Skia rasterizes glyphs at the requested size where a magnified 14 px bitmap would be mush; and the long capture hint is fit-clamped to the window — at 2× it is wider than a 1080p screen, so scaling it naively would have traded a small OSD for a truncated one. feat(host): PUNKTFUNK_HOST_NAME names the host in Moonlight and the clients
A box called `bazzite-htpc` had no way to present itself as "Living Room" short of renaming the machine. The new knob overrides the name everywhere a human sees it: the GameStream serverinfo <hostname> element and the mDNS service instance name both adverts carry. Unset (the default) is the machine's own hostname, exactly as before. Free text is the point, so the DNS-level name is now a separate concern from the display name. The instance label may contain spaces and accents; an A-record target may not, and mdns-sd rejects the whole ServiceInfo if the target is not a legal name — which would take discovery down rather than merely look wrong. dns_label() sanitizes the target and passes an already-legal name through byte-for-byte, so hosts without the override advertise precisely what they always did. The display name loses `.` (it would split the label, and clients derive the name as the first label of the fullname, so "Ben's PC v1.2" would arrive as "Ben's PC v1") and is capped at the 63-byte DNS-SD ceiling on a char boundary. docs: streaming a real monitor, and the CLI that names one
The console grew a "Streamed screen" card and the host grew a PUNKTFUNK_CAPTURE_MONITOR knob and a list-monitors command, and the docs knew about none of it — a control with no explanation anywhere. virtual-displays.md gets the feature section: what it is for, that the monitor is never touched, that its resolution wins and a client scales, that a bad name is a hard error rather than a different screen, and that there is no chooser dialog on any of the four backends (which is what makes it work unattended). Plus the three troubleshooting entries the shape of the feature predicts: settings that do nothing while mirroring, a console card the env var has locked, and a pin that names no head. host-cli.md documents list-monitors and mirror-test; configuration.md gets the knob, including that it outranks the console on purpose; running-as-a-service.md gets the desktop-session drop-in and states that the host needs nothing exported to find its session. fix(gamescope): the takeover no longer kills the host it is running in
Field report, Nobara + 0.20.0: switching into Game Mode mid-stream disconnects the client and the box never lights up again. His journal has the whole mechanism, ten seconds apart: 12:34:18.9 freed Steam: stopped the display manager for this stream 12:34:29.0 systemd[1685]: Stopping punktfunk-host.service Stopping the display manager ends the user's last login session. The packaged host is a `systemd --user` unit, so logind then stops user@1000.service once UserStopDelaySec elapses — 10s by default on Nobara — and takes the host with it. The stream dies, the scheduled restore never runs, and the display manager stays down with nothing left to restart it: a black box that needs a VT to recover. Exactly the two symptoms reported, and the intermittency is just whether an active Gaming Mode session was there to trigger the takeover at all. It never showed on the repro VM because lingering was enabled there for the earlier sessionless tests (`Linger=yes` — confirmed on the VM today), which is precisely the thing that breaks the dependency: logind keeps the user manager alive with no session. Our KDE/GNOME/Arch setup guides already ask for it; his box, following the KDE route, did not have it. So the takeover now ensures lingering BEFORE it touches the display manager: `loginctl enable-linger` directly (allow_active in logind's own policy — verified working unprivileged on Nobara), else the packaged helper gains a `linger` verb that enables it for PKEXEC_UID alone, never a caller-named user. If neither works the takeover is refused with an actionable error and managed degrades to attach — mirroring the box's own session is strictly better than a screen that needs a VT. Hosts that cannot be reached this way (root, a system unit) skip the check: the cgroup test is a pure `cgroup_under_user_manager` with a unit test, matched against the real shapes on a Nobara box (`user@1000.service/app.slice/...` vs a `session-N.scope`). Also documents the requirement in the gamescope guide's Nobara section. Checked on Linux: clippy -D warnings, 78 tests, rustfmt; helper verified with `sh -n`, and the linger enable/disable round-trip run live on the Nobara VM. |

On-glass on .41: with `game_on_session_end: keep` — "leave it running, nothing
is ever closed" — a deliberate stop ended the game, and a drop ended it ~14 s
later. Both times the LEASE did the right thing (no `ending the launched game`
line); the game died because the virtual display was torn down, and a nested
launch runs inside that gamescope.
So on a dedicated gamescope session the game's lifetime IS the display's, and
keep-alive decides it — not this setting:
* a deliberate stop skips the linger by design, so the game goes at once,
* a drop lingers the keep-alive window, then takes the game with it,
* only keep-alive Forever actually keeps it — and `always` still ends it at
the reconnect window, which is the documented precedence and was verified
(a `forever`-pinned display released at grace expiry, 60.006 s).
That makes the console's promise untrue on the most common Linux setup, so the
card now says so for every option rather than only warning about `always`, and
the docs get the three cases as a table. Worded so a non-gamescope host reads it
and moves on — a desktop-session launch is an ordinary process and none of it
applies.
Not changing behavior here: making `keep` pin the display would pit it against
"a stop must not leave a ghost display", and which wins is a product call rather
than something to decide silently mid-test.

docs: what happens when a game ends, and when a session does
The two behaviors are opt-in-shaped in different directions — one on by default, one off — so the page says which is which, what `always` costs, and that the keep-alive above it is a different clock governing a different thing. The precedence rule (a display kept forever stays up regardless) is spelled out rather than left to be discovered. The dedicated-game-session blurb claimed game-exit-ends-the-session as its own feature; that is now true everywhere, so it moves to where it belongs. Automation gains the `game.running` / `game.exited` rows and a short section on reacting to a game rather than a stream — the two are usually the same moment but not always, and anyone who has been polling the host to find out when a game finished can stop. docs-site: build + tsc clean. |

The CCD isolate verifies "sole active desktop" at commit time and is never checked again. On a hybrid Intel+NVIDIA box the internal panel is re-activated moments later (the isolated topology is deliberately not saved to the CCD database so teardown can restore the user's layout, and the post-isolate resize/HDR churn — or the panel's own driver, or display-poller software — re-resolves back to the stored layout). Proven on-glass: seconds after the verify, CCD showed the panel ACTIVE beside the virtual display while the host still believed it was exclusive — cursor and windows can land off-stream, and the lock screen can land on the physical panel. A group-scoped watchdog now re-queries every PUNKTFUNK_EXCLUSIVE_REASSERT_MS (default 2 s, 0 disables) while an EXCLUSIVE isolate is live and re-issues the isolate when a non-managed display crept back, logging who-is-fighting escalation (3×WARN → 1×ERROR → DEBUG). Gated on a new GroupState.ccd_exclusive flag so a Primary group's deliberately-lit panels are never "fixed". Cycles take the state lock via try_lock with a sliced sleep, so teardown's stop+join under the state lock cannot deadlock and is bounded by ~250 ms. fix(pf-encode): arbitrate NVENC split-encode vs sub-frame readback (Phase 8)
Verified against nvEncodeAPI.h's own splitEncodeMode doc (user-prompted — the audit's 'exclusive for HEVC' one-liner deserved checking): - H.264: split 'is not applicable' — hard-DISABLE the mode so the written config, CeilingKey, the split diagnostic log and the rejection-retry stay truthful (the retry used to re-open a byte-identical session after an H.264 'split rejection'). The libav path's operator arm gains the codec gate its auto arm always had. - HEVC: split 'not supported if … subframe mode' — when WE force split (TWO/THREE/AUTO_FORCED, the 4K120 throughput lever), sub-frame yields with a logged escape (PUNKTFUNK_SPLIT_ENCODE=0 chooses sub-frame). ⚠ Keyed on FORCED modes only, never != DISABLE: AUTO(0) is the resolver's fallthrough for every sub-950Mpix session, and the wider key would have disarmed the Phase-3 chunked-poll feature fleet-wide (critic catch). Under AUTO the driver arbitrates — the shipped state. - AV1: untouched — per-tile sub-frame + split are legal together. The arbitration is a pure nvenc_core fn called by each backend BEFORE the ladder, the ceiling key and the chunked-poll latch — all three see the post-arbitration truth. A drop inside build_init_params would have left poll_chunk busy-polling its whole budget every AU (numSlices stays 0 without reportSliceOffsets; both loop exits dead — critic catch). Linux latches subframe_forced beside subframe_on at query_caps (no env re-reads after open); Windows records the arbitrated state so reconfigure presents exactly the params the open had (also closes the pre-existing mid-session env-flip hazard there). Field report (Nobara, 0.19.2): entering Game Mode mid-stream left the monitor on and the stream mirroring at the desktop's resolution. Root cause: the DM-flavor takeover needs privilege to stop plasmalogin, the polkit rule is a docs-only manual step nobody installs, so every managed entry silently degraded to ATTACH — and with a physical display connected the attach path mirrors the box's own session at its own mode. Ship the privilege with the packages instead: a root helper (libexec/punktfunk/pf-dm-helper, verbs stop|restore) behind its own polkit action (io.unom.punktfunk.dm-helper, allow_any — the same mechanism Nobara's os-session-select uses, and the helper derives the DM unit from the display-manager.service symlink itself so callers never name a unit across the privilege boundary). The host tries the plain system-bus verbs first (root / operator rule still take precedence), then pkexec's the helper; the restore paths (idle restore + in-stream desktop-switch honor) use the same ladder so a takeover that needed the helper can always be undone by it. Packaged in rpm/deb/arch (Arch under /usr/lib/punktfunk with the policy's exec.path annotation rewritten; the host probes both layouts). Nix is left out deliberately: store paths can't match the probe, NixOS keeps the manual rule. Docs updated — the rule snippet stays as the scoped alternative. A fresh install left PunktfunkWeb registered but not running: `web setup` waited only for the mgmt token before firing `schtasks /run`, while `web-run.cmd` also requires the host identity cert — and the host writes the token during argument parsing but `cert.pem` only after the pure-Rust RSA-2048 keygen inside `serve`. The launcher lost that race, exited 1, and since the task carried no trigger but boot (Task Scheduler does not reliably restart on a non-zero exit code) the console stayed down until the next reboot, with the installer still reporting "web console set up + started". - `web setup` gates on cert.pem (written last) as well as the token, 90 s budget. - After `schtasks /run`, poll for the :47992 listener and retry before giving up; warn honestly instead of claiming a start that did not happen. - `web-run.cmd` (installed + dev) waits in-process for the token + cert (~5 min) rather than exiting 1 and hoping restart-on-failure retries. - Register the task with a logon trigger alongside boot, falling back to the boot-only XML if a Task Scheduler build rejects it. - Linux had the same defect: punktfunk-web.service's Restart=on-failure gave up permanently after systemd's default 5-starts-in-10 s limit. First on-glass test of the DM-flavor takeover confirmed the black-screen fix, but exposed that the managed model could not switch back: Steam's in-stream session-select is a silent no-op while the display manager is stopped (every config-write branch in os-session-select requires the DM to be running), so the capture loss it causes just relaunched game mode. The user pass of the switch script does leave one durable trace — the ~/.config/steamos-session-select sentinel, written before any DM check. The managed launch now baselines its mtime; a capture loss with the sentinel advanced reads as the switch request and is honored by replaying the switch with the DM up: restore the display manager, run the distro's own os-session-select (its internal pkexec is authorized allow_any by the distro policy, so it works from the host's sessionless context), then stop the autologin game-mode unit so Relogin lands in the newly selected desktop. The capture-loss re-detection then follows KWin as it comes up; a 120 s post-honor grace stops the rebuild loop from racing the booting desktop back into game mode (superseded early if the box's own game-mode unit reappears — the desktop→game leg stays fast). The baseline is re-recorded on crash-restore so a pre-existing sentinel never reads as a fresh request. Every verb in the sequence was live-validated on the Nobara repro VM. fix(vdisplay/gamescope): DM-flavor-aware session takeover — stop masking Nobara's plasmalogin to death
Field report (Nobara 43 HTPC): switching the host to Steam Game Mode mid-stream permanently black-screened the box. Live-proven root cause on a Nobara repro VM: our takeover masks the box's gamescope-session-plus unit, plasmalogin's Relogin=true then fails its session Exec repeatedly and trips systemd's start limit within ~1 s — the display manager dies, and our restore verb (unmask + user start) cannot bring a seatless gamescope back. Only 'reset-failed + restart' of the DM recovers. The takeover is now display-manager-flavor-aware: - SDDM (Bazzite/SteamOS) keeps the proven mask+SIGKILL path unchanged. - plasmalogin/unknown DMs never mask: with privilege (root or an operator polkit rule scoped to the DM unit — documented) the host stops the DM for the stream and restores it with reset-failed + restart (PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD as fallback), recorded in the persisted takeover state so a host crash still restores; without privilege the managed takeover degrades to ATTACH and mirrors the box's live Game Mode instead of destabilizing the seat. Both legs of the privileged cycle live-verified on the repro VM (headless managed session works with zero login sessions; render nodes are 0666). A loaded-but-inactive leftover instance never triggers the DM stop. Companion fixes from the same triage: - ensure_box_gamescope_mode gains the attach-only rebuild-probe guard both managed paths already had (stale post-capture-loss detection restarted the box's unit), and no longer re-modes a box that drives a physical display — attach mirrors on-glass; re-mode is the headless-box model. - Capture-loss rebuilds targeting gamescope get a 100 s budget: the 40 s budget expired inside the first 45 s Steam-cold-start launch attempt, a guaranteed single-shot failure. - A PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR pin now WARNs once per capture loss when the live session no longer matches it (the pin disables session-following — the reporter's original stream-death trigger). - A managed session that took nothing over (client gamescope pin beside a live desktop) is stopped on disconnect instead of being orphaned forever. Field triage (Nobara, Discord): the kde.md starter host.env told desktop users to set PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=kwin, which PINS the backend — detect() short-circuits and the capture-loss rebuild never re-detects — so a mid-stream switch to Game Mode killed the stream instead of following it. A follow-up hardcoded XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 anchor broke PipeWire for any non-1000 uid (pw audio connect: Creation failed). Revamp across every starter/example/reference: - Desktop starters (kde/gnome/hyprland/sway) shrink to PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE=virtual + an explicit warning that pinning disables session-following; forcing a backend is CI/appliance-only. - host.env.example: rewritten around auto-detection; anchors demoted to a commented ssh/cron-only block with the uid trap spelled out; the gamescope ATTACH/MANAGED knobs documented (previously missing); case-sensitivity called out. - packaging/bazzite/host.env + README: drop the uid-1000 anchors (a systemctl --user service inherits/derives them); README's stale PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=gamescope-era template synced to the real one. - packaging/kde/host.env: loud APPLIANCE-ONLY header (it pins on purpose). - configuration.md: session-anchors section inverted to "leave unset", compositor row states the pin consequence, case-sensitivity note. - troubleshooting.md: new "session fails right after editing host.env" section (case, wrong-uid anchors, stale pin, restart-to-apply). - gamescope.md/bazzite.md: attach/managed descriptions match current behavior (managed is the infra-detected default; attach re-modes a box-owned session to the client's resolution). Lifts the ~100 Mbps decrypt ceiling on clients without hardware AES — the armv7 soft-AES targets (webOS TVs), where AES-128-GCM resolves to fixsliced software AES + software GHASH (~50-100 cpb) while ChaCha20-Poly1305's ARX construction runs ~10-17 cpb portable, a 4-7x lift that PyroWave-on-TV needs (design/chacha20-session-cipher.md). Phase 1 (core crypto, no wire change): SessionKey merges cipher choice and key material (invalid combinations unrepresentable, zeroize + redacted-Debug discipline kept); SessionCrypto dispatches both aead-0.5 ciphers per call — the salt||seq nonce scheme, per-direction salts, seq-as-AAD and replay window carry over verbatim (same 96-bit nonce / 16-byte tag, const-asserted). Config.key becomes SessionKey; validate's zero-key rejection follows the active variant. The C ABI keeps its fixed 16-byte key mapped to AES — no ABI_VERSION bump. Phase 2 (negotiation): VIDEO_CAP_CHACHA20 (0x40) — support-plus-request in one bit, the VIDEO_CAP_444 precedent. Welcome grows cipher@68 + key_chacha@69..101, emitted only when non-zero so an AES session's Welcome stays byte-identical to the pre-cipher form; decode is fail-closed (short key or unknown id -> Err, never a silent AES fallback). No WIRE_VERSION bump; downgrade resistance inherited from the pinned-TLS control channel. Phase 3 (host): grant only when the client advertised the bit and the PUNKTFUNK_CHACHA20 kill-switch (default on, documented) allows; fresh 32-byte per-session key from the same RNG discipline, legacy key field stays independently random; resolved cipher logged at session start. Verification: seal/open suites parameterized over both ciphers + a cross-cipher tamper case; Welcome roundtrip/truncation/fail-closed tests; ChaCha lossy-loopback soak (loss/replay is cipher-independent); bench gains _chacha20 series (AES ids unchanged for CI history) — host-side sealing line-rate-trivial on both x86 (~640 MiB/s) and Apple Silicon (~535 MiB/s). punktfunk-probe drives the interop matrix via PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CHACHA20=1 and logs the negotiated cipher. The system-tuning block (UDP buffers, gamepad udev rule, vhci-hcd autoload, input group) was gated on `sudo -n true` — passwordless sudo — so on a stock SteamOS box (the deck account needs a password) the whole block was silently skipped: /dev/uhid stayed root-only so the gamepad degraded to an Xbox 360 pad, and the UDP buffers stayed at the 416 KB default. Video was unaffected because Game Mode/gamescope needs none of it, which masked the skip on-glass. - install.sh + update.sh: acquire sudo interactively (`sudo -v` prompt on a TTY) instead of requiring passwordless; skip only when there's no TTY or auth fails, and then print the exact manual block plus a `passwd` hint — a stock SteamOS 'deck' account has no password, so sudo can't work until one is set. - update.sh: also retrofit the UDP-buffer sysctl for older/skipped installs, and loudly nag to reboot when the input group was just added (a --user restart does not pick up the new group; only a fresh login does). - steamos-host.md: note this step prompts for the sudo password. A fresh SteamOS host install failed on-glass two ways: KWin denied Desktop-mode capture (zkde_screencast_unstable_v1) so every session died in the pipeline build, and the native Steam Deck pad degraded to an Xbox 360 controller. Both stem from setup that only a fresh login applies — the host user-service keeps the pre-install group set and KWin reads its .desktop grant at session start — plus a missing vhci-hcd autoload the pad's USB/IP transport needs (the deb/rpm/arch packages ship it; the Deck installer did not). - install.sh: install punktfunk-modules.conf (+ modprobe vhci-hcd now) for the native Deck controller transport, seed the KDE RemoteDesktop grant (kde-authorized) for Desktop-mode input, and print a loud "reboot before streaming" notice when a relogin is actually required (input group added or the .desktop grant first installed). - update.sh: retrofit the udev rule, vhci-hcd autoload, input group, and grant so existing installs pick them up on the next update without a reinstall. - steamos-host.md: document the first-install reboot and the native controller passthrough requirements (input group + vhci-hcd + client-side Steam Input Off). The VirtualHere DualSense recipe linked the `virtualhere-dualsense.ts` SDK example as a deployable recipe but skipped everything needed to run it: that VirtualHere is a server (couch) + client (host) pair, and that the example — like every example — imports `../src/index.js`, which only resolves inside the SDK repo. A user copying it out had no way to know they must `bun add @punktfunk/host` and swap that import. - automation.md: rewrite the recipe into a full walkthrough — the two-sided VirtualHere setup, the `-t` verbs, the zero-code hooks version, and a new scripted section with exact deploy steps, env vars, and running it as a service (its own SIGTERM handler makes `systemctl stop` release the pad). - sdk/README.md: say how to run an example in-repo vs deployed on a host. - virtualhere-dualsense.ts: header note on the import swap + service setup, since that file is where the doc link lands. Console: a Plugins section (Browse / Installed / Sources) on a static nav entry, with install friction proportional to trust — a plain confirm for a verified entry, a warning naming the curator for an external one, and a danger dialog that makes you retype the spec for a raw package. Tier badges are permanent and follow the plugin onto its own UI page. Index: unom/punktfunk-plugin-index published and served from Gitea's raw endpoint (real HTTPS, byte-exact, no vhost to stand up) — merge to main is publish, which resolves the design's open hosting question. Four things only running it could find: - runner discovery matched @punktfunk/plugin-* only, so a third-party scoped plugin (which D8 requires) would install and never run - ...and that convention also matches @punktfunk/plugin-kit, a plugin's own framework: it listed as installed and would have been imported as a unit. Both now key off the plugins dir's top-level dependencies, with an emptied dependency list meaning 'nothing installed' rather than falling back to the naming convention - the store must not pass new flags to the runner: the scripting package ships separately and an older one reads an unknown flag's value as a package name. The host writes the bunfig scope mapping itself - ureq reports only >= 400 as Err, so a conditional request's 304 arrives as Ok with an empty body — handled as an error it made every refresh after the first verify a signature over zero bytes and sit stale Also: the console's first Tabs use exposed an @unom/ui theme gap that rendered inactive tabs invisible (caught in a browser pass, not by types). Intel's Windows driver advertises Vulkan Video (Arc drivers since 2023), so the capability gate alone no longer keeps Intel off FFmpeg-Vulkan — and that combination is broken in the field (B580 report: strobing + 7.2 ms p50 decodes at 4K120) and on glass (Arc Pro iGPU: 29-33 ms p50 decodes at 4K60 where D3D11VA does 2.5 ms on the SAME GPU). Mirror the Linux vendor order on Windows: NVIDIA/AMD keep Vulkan Video first, Intel/unknown take D3D11VA first; vulkan stays reachable by explicit preference and as auto's fallback. Also: - Vulkan→D3D11VA mid-session demotion rung (the Windows analog of Linux's Vulkan→VAAPI rung) — a failing Vulkan backend lands on hardware, not on software, which cannot survive 4K120. - The demotion streak now needs 1 s of age as well as 3 consecutive errors: a startup loss burst produced 3 errors in 20 ms and stranded the session on software decode (one-way) before the IDR requested on the first error could possibly arrive — live-hit on the Intel iGPU leg. - Stale "Intel's Windows driver has no Vulkan Video" comments corrected, docs updated to the per-vendor order, vendor-order test extended with discrete/iGPU Arc cases. Verified on an Arc Pro iGPU + RTX 3500 Ada laptop against a CachyOS/NVENC host: auto now picks d3d11va on Intel (60 fps, 2.5-2.8 ms decode, e2e 26 ms vs 50 ms before) and still picks vulkan on NVIDIA. 27/27 pf-client-core tests, clippy clean. GNOME 50 (Mutter MR 4928, PipeWire >= 1.6) added HDR screen sharing for monitor streams: 10-bit PQ formats (xRGB_210LE/xBGR_210LE) with MANDATORY BT.2020 + SMPTE-2084 colorimetry props, advertised while the mirrored monitor is in BT.2100 colour mode. Phases 4+5 of design/pyrowave-444-hdr.md. The Metal decoder needs NO new ABI: every frame's sequence header carries chroma (444) and, since the Phase-3 stamps, the PQ/BT.2020 bits — so the decoder self-configures per session. Decoder: WaveletLayout grows the 4:4:4 block space (chroma runs the full pyramid like luma — no level-0 skip, no early half-res emit; the Metal kernels were already chroma-agnostic, only the dispatch structure changes); the parser accepts chroma_resolution=444, reads the PQ transfer bit, and lifts the even-dims rule for 444; the plane ring allocates full-res chroma and r16Unorm for PQ streams; CSC rows switch to depth-10 MSB-packed. Presenter: planar HDR passthrough reuses pf_frag_planar on an rgba16Float drawable (itur_2100_PQ + EDR metadata interpret the samples — same split as pf_frag/pf_frag_hdr), plus a new pf_frag_planar_tm PQ->SDR tone-map (shared pqToSdr tail refactored out of pf_frag_hdr_tv) for tvOS-without-headroom AND macOS WINDOWED sessions, whose IOSurface present path (the DCP-panic mitigation) is BGRA8-only. SessionModel stops stripping the HDR/10-bit/444 caps on the PyroWave opt-in. New golden: au-dense444 + upstream's own 4:4:4 reference planes (regenerated via the extended pyrowave_dump_golden); Metal decode matches at 64-67 dB (420 fixtures re-verify 77-88 dB). Full Apple suite 157 tests green on a real M-series GPU. Docs updated: the 8-bit-SDR-only wording is gone, the Windows host is no longer 'on the roadmap', bpp scaling documented. The "Which should I use?" table on the clients page listed most client names as bold text, not links — only the Decky plugin and pf-webos were clickable — so the client references appeared broken. Link each client to its section (or dedicated page), and fix a stale Windows headless command. The optional supervision layer (RFC §8): one service runs everything in <config_dir>/scripts/ plus installed punktfunk-plugin-* packages (<config_dir>/plugins/node_modules/), as Effect fibers. - Plugins (a definePlugin default export, either main shape) are SUPERVISED: a failure restarts them with capped exponential backoff (jittered, 1s→60s); a clean return completes them. The Effect shape runs under the PunktfunkHost layer; the async-fn shape gets a facade client whose close is scope-guaranteed. - Bare scripts are one-shot: importing them is the run, no restart (export a plugin to be supervised). - Shutdown is STRUCTURAL: SIGINT/SIGTERM interrupt the whole fiber tree, so Effect plugins' scoped finalizers run and clients close before exit — the systemctl-stop story, and the reason the Effect plugin shape exists at all. - The sshd rule applies to unit files (world-writable → refused loudly); cache-busted imports make restarts real; --list for inventory. 6 new bun tests (17 total green): discovery + refusal, both plugin shapes against a mock host, crash→restart with backoff, one-shot semantics, and finalizer-on-interrupt. Live-verified against a real host: a supervised watcher plugin received library.changed through the pinned tunnel, and SIGTERM shut the tree down structurally (exit 0). Deferred to the packaging follow-up (release.yml is in flight in a parallel session): the vendored-Bun deb/rpm/iss packages and the host-log-ring tee (needs a host ingest endpoint); console page rides the other console surfaces. External game-library providers become first-class (RFC §8): a plugin
computes its desired title list and PUTs it — the host owns the diff.
- CustomEntry gains `provider` + `external_id` (API-set only; never on
manual entries). GameEntry surfaces `provider` for console attribution
and the new `GET /library?provider=` filter.
- PUT /api/v1/library/provider/{p}: atomic declarative reconcile keyed
on the provider's `external_id` — host ids stay stable across syncs,
orphans drop, manual entries and other providers are never touched,
an empty array clears the set. Validated: provider id [a-z0-9._-]
(`manual` reserved), unique non-empty external_ids.
- DELETE /api/v1/library/provider/{p}: clean uninstall, returns the
removed count.
- Ownership is unambiguous both ways: manual CRUD now returns 409 for a
provider-owned entry (MutateOutcome::ProviderOwned) instead of letting
an edit be silently clobbered at the next sync.
- library.changed now carries the mutating source (`manual` or the
provider id) — hooks and the SDK filter on it.
- Spec + SDK schemas regenerated; sdk/examples/provider-sync.ts is the
provider-plugin skeleton.
347 host tests green (pure reconcile: stable ids, orphan drop,
idempotence, bystanders untouched; name/payload validation; route 400s)
+ 11 SDK tests. Live-verified end to end THROUGH the SDK against a real
host: sync → filtered list → manual-delete 409 → re-sync with stable id
+ orphan drop → uninstall (removed=2), with three
library.changed(source=romm) events observed on the live stream.
