test(client/windows): the re-render rules become measured, and the switcher survives a collapsed pane
Adopts windows-reactor's own headless harness (the `test` feature + the upstream repo's `test_reactor`/RecordingBackend crate, same pinned rev) and pins the three semantics this client's state placement depends on, in tests/reactor_semantics.rs: * A child's sync `use_state` re-renders it through element-equal wrappers — the pre-bump reconciler pruned at the wrapper; fixed upstream (`nested_state_rerender.rs`). * A sync write from a backend-fired event handler re-renders — the "MenuFlyout handlers bypass the flush" claim does not hold at the engine level on this rev. * A child-owned `AsyncSetState` write still does NOT re-render its owner — newly diagnosed: every component RenderCx draws a fresh HostId but rerender callbacks are registered only for the root, so the child's request is a registry miss, silently dropped; the value surfaces on the next unrelated pass. The test asserts the broken behaviour on purpose, so the bump that fixes it upstream turns the test red and the discipline can be relaxed. (Upstream's own async test installs the guard for the very cx it tests and cannot see this; worth reporting with this repro.) The stale discipline note in app/mod.rs — written against the June rev — is replaced by the measured rules, each citing its test. Net: per-screen EVENT-driven UI state may live in the screen's own component; THREAD-driven state stays hoisted at root, now for a proven reason. Riding along (field report from the live review): the scope switcher no longer clips when the NavigationView collapses. WinUI's Auto mode shrinks the pane below 1008 epx and CLIPS pane-footer content to the rail; reactor exposes no pane-opened event, so root now reads the window size and the switcher follows the same threshold — expanded pane → pane footer, collapsed → a slim row leading the content column (an Auto/Star grid row, not a vstack, so the scroll viewport survives). Test builds use their own CARGO_TARGET_DIR by convention: windows-reactor-setup stages resources.pri next to the test binary and a RUNNING dev client holds that file mapped. chore(client): the windows-rs pin moves a month forward, onto the SDK-metadata bindings
The July 2026 windows-rs brings a reconciler keyed-child-order fix (#4728), widget validation (#4727), a DPI collision fix (#4751), icon elements (#4736), multi-window support (#4730) and scroll virtualization (#4710) — the re-render fixes the Windows client has been working around at the architecture level. All three pinned deps (windows-reactor, windows, windows-reactor-setup) move together so windows-core stays unified across the swap-chain hand-off, and pf-client-core moves with them. The bulk of the diff is #4689: windows/windows-sys now generate straight from the Windows SDK, so the `Win32_*` namespace features became one feature per SDK header (winuser, dxgi, d3d11, …), the PascalCase namespace modules became header-named modules, struct-returning COM methods take explicit out-params and return HRESULT, Win32 functions return their raw BOOL/HANDLE instead of Result, and flag constants are plain integers. Both crates' Win32 code is rewritten to that shape; behaviour is unchanged on every path. Riding along, all already stale before the bump: the README and the three Windows workflows stop claiming windows-reactor's build.rs needs CARGO_WORKSPACE_DIR (that build.rs no longer exists — staging moved to windows-reactor-setup via OUT_DIR); the README layout section stops describing modules that moved into the session binary long ago and gains the manual smoke checklist; the notices generator learns the SPDX for crates that ship license files without a `license` field, which turns windows-reactor-setup's UNKNOWN into MIT OR Apache-2.0; and the crate records its real rust-version (1.96) instead of inheriting the workspace's 1.82. Verified: cargo check/clippy/fmt clean on punktfunk-client-windows, pf-client-core and punktfunk-client-session; both bins build; --discover finds the LAN hosts; the GUI shell comes up (WinAppSDK bootstrap intact under the new reactor-setup). WP4 / D2. Protocol activation of a full-trust packaged app delivers the URI as the command line, so a browser prompt, `start punktfunk://…` and a written `.lnk` all arrive the same way — as a positional argument, the same door the Linux shell uses. What Windows does not give us is single-instancing: unlike GApplication, a second activation is simply a second process. So the first instance claims the named mutex `unom.punktfunk.client` and any later one hands its URL to the winner over `WM_COPYDATA` and exits — one window, and the link opens where the user's hosts already are. The hand-off retries while the primary's window is still coming up (a shortcut double-clicked during startup is the ordinary case), and a hand-off that finds nobody falls through so this process becomes the shell that opens it. A link is never silently dropped, which is also why the inbox is a queue: two shortcuts in quick succession are two links. Routing is the same four lines of translation as on Linux, because the decisions belong to `plan_from_link`: a resolved link becomes the call a tile click makes, with the same wake, trust and error surfaces. Never preempting a live session is checked here, since only this layer knows one is running. The manifest declares the protocol and an app execution alias rather than writing registry keys, so uninstall leaves nothing behind — and Windows' own "allow this app to handle punktfunk links?" prompt is the origin friction the design wants, not duplicated in-app. (Manifest comments are free of double hyphens: XML forbids them and makepri rejects the whole file, which is how the console flag broke the v0.15.0 build. A test parses the substituted manifest and asserts both declarations, so that can't rot silently.) "Create shortcut…" writes a `.lnk` targeting the ALIAS with the URL as an argument, not a `.url` internet shortcut: both work while the scheme is registered, only this one still works if it isn't, and targeting the alias keeps it valid across updates when the package path changes. Verified on the CI VM (192.168.1.133): clippy -D warnings clean and its tests green. Not yet exercised on glass — `start punktfunk://…` cold and with the app running, and a written shortcut, still want a real desktop session. chore(unsafe): the workspace adopts the drivers' unsafe discipline
`packaging/windows/drivers/*` has run `deny(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)` +
`deny(clippy::undocumented_unsafe_blocks)` for a while, with `forbid(unsafe_code)`
on the modules that need no unsafe at all. The main workspace had no lint config
whatsoever, so nothing stopped a clean crate from quietly growing an `unsafe`, and
nothing distinguished the handful of genuinely-unsafe lines inside a 600-line
`unsafe fn` from the safe ones surrounding them.
Three things, all mechanical:
* `#![forbid(unsafe_code)]` on the eight crates that already contain zero unsafe
(`pf-driver-proto`, `pf-host-config`, `pf-paths`, the three clean clients, both
tools). These were clean by accident, not by contract; now they are clean by
contract.
* `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn = "warn"` workspace-wide. `unsafe fn` states a contract
the CALLER must uphold — it was never meant to switch off checking for the whole
body. Measured fallout is 300 sites on Linux, and they are concentrated: six
files carry all of them, while `punktfunk-core`, `pf-frame`, `pf-clipboard` and
`pf-vdisplay` are already at zero. `warn` (not `deny`) so the build stays green
while those six are worked down; it flips to `deny` once they are. This is also
the Rust 2024 default, so it pays off the edition migration early.
* `proc::current_uid()` replaces eight `unsafe { libc::getuid() }` blocks. Each
site had copied out the same SAFETY note verbatim, which is the tell: `getuid()`
is parameterless, always succeeds and touches no memory, so there is no contract
for a caller to uphold and no reason for the unsafe to be visible eight times.
One `unsafe` behind a safe wrapper, none at the call sites.
Verified: `pf-vdisplay` builds clean on Linux (Nobara) at zero E0133; the
macOS-buildable crates build clean locally. No behaviour change.

feat(client/windows): make the console UI findable, and launchable on its own
Two problems, one feature. The gamepad/couch UI existed but you had to
already know it was there:
- On the hosts page its card only rendered when a controller was CONNECTED,
so with no pad plugged in there was no visible entry point at all -- the
only other door being a per-host overflow menu behind a "..." nobody
opens. The card now always shows, with copy that adapts to whether a pad
is present, so the feature is findable before you own the hardware.
- There was no way to start it directly. An HTPC or TV box wants the couch
interface as its first screen, not the desktop shell. "punktfunk-client
--console" now hands straight off to it (fullscreen unless --windowed),
which covers shortcuts, Steam entries, autostart and Task Scheduler.
The Start-menu tile needs its own executable: an MSIX <Application> cannot
pass arguments to a full-trust exe, so "punktfunk-client.exe --console" is
not expressible there. punktfunk-console.exe is a ~20-line hand-off to the
session binary's browse mode, staged into the package and given its own
tile ("Punktfunk Console").
Nothing new is implemented behind either door: a bare "--browse" was
already a complete standalone client (host list, discovery, PIN pairing,
settings, Wake-on-LAN, library). It just had no front door.

refactor(windows): remove the legacy in-process builtin stream path
The real Windows client is the spawned punktfunk-session Vulkan binary (pf-client-core); the in-process builtin GUI stream — reachable only via PUNKTFUNK_BUILTIN_STREAM=1 — was dead weight kept alive by nothing and a recurring source of wasted effort. Remove it: delete present/render/input/ audio.rs and the builtin remainder of session/video.rs, rip all the builtin wiring (app/mod, connect, stream), and make connect always spawn. Preserve the two shipped keepers that happened to live in those files by relocating them to a new probe.rs: run_speed_probe (the per-host network speed test used by the Settings speed page and --headless --speed-test) and decodable_codecs (the codec-capability advert on the probe connect). Trim gpu.rs to just the Settings adapter picker (adapter_names + helpers). --headless now supports only --speed-test — the in-process decode/frame-counter went with the pump. Drops the now-orphaned deps opus, wasapi, crossbeam-channel, anyhow; keeps ffmpeg-next (probe::decodable_codecs still needs it). Net 4432 deletions. Statically verified (module wiring, imports, orphaned symbols/deps all clean); the type-level compile runs on the windows-amd64 CI runner, which has the toolchain this non-Windows host lacks. feat(clients/windows): single-window handoff, shared settings store, console-UI surfacing
UX polish batch 1 (clients/windows/ui-polish-plan.md, workstreams W0/A1/B/C/E):
- W0: the shell's duplicated trust/settings structs are gone — src/trust.rs
re-exports pf-client-core's, so the shell and the spawned session binary share
ONE Settings shape over client-windows-settings.json. Fixes real bugs: the
shell's saves no longer drop session-side fields; the stats-overlay toggle
(show_hud -> show_stats, serde alias migrates old files) and the forwarded-
controller pick now actually reach the spawned session. The "Streaming engine"
Settings combo is gone (PUNKTFUNK_BUILTIN_STREAM=1 stays as the dev A/B knob).
- Forwarded-controller pinning by stable key (vid:pid:name, pf-client-core's
format): persisted as forward_pad, applied by the shell's own service at
startup AND by the session binary in session_params (both OSes — the session
never applied the pin before).
- A1 single window: the shell hides itself when the spawned session window
presents its first frame ({"ready":true}) and restores + foregrounds on the
child's exit — exactly one visible Punktfunk window at any time. Restore runs
before the request-access cancel gate so a Ready/Cancel race can't strand the
shell hidden.
- C console UI: punktfunk-session --browse gains --json-status (ready when the
library window presents; error line on a failed start), and the shell
surfaces it — "Open console UI" on paired hosts' menus, plus a controller-
detected hint card targeting the most recent paired host (x64 only; aarch64
ships no skia ui feature). Browse spawns hide/restore the shell like streams.
- B responsive: minimum window size (420x360); the hosts header collapses to
icon-only buttons below 700 px; the session status card shrinks instead of
clipping (max_width); busy pages, help actions, licenses and long labels wrap.
- E polish: session exe gets the app icon (winresource + WM_SETICON via the new
pf-presenter win32.rs); both exes share an explicit AppUserModelID on
unpackaged runs (packaged identity wins) so the windows group as one taskbar
app across the visibility handoff; "Start streams fullscreen" toggle passes
--fullscreen (GTK parity); connects stamp KnownHost::last_used; the connect
target is stashed for every route so "Connecting to X" always names the host.

set_locked() hid the OS cursor with a one-shot ShowCursor(false), but the WinUI content island answers WM_SETCURSOR and re-asserts the arrow on every pointer move, so the cursor reappeared the instant the mouse moved while the pointer lock was engaged. A low-level mouse hook never sees WM_SETCURSOR, so it couldn't suppress it. Subclass the WinUI window and all its descendants (the video is a composition SwapChainPanel, so the pointer actually sits over WinUI's internal input-site child, which is the window that receives WM_SETCURSOR) and, while the lock wants the cursor hidden, answer WM_SETCURSOR ourselves with SetCursor(None) and return TRUE — halting WinUI's arrow re-assertion. ShowCursor(false) stays as the coarse first-frame hide. The subclass is removed on teardown so the reused app window (host list) is left pristine. Adds the Win32_UI_Shell feature for the subclassing APIs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(clients/windows): WinUI UX batch - tile hover, Settings NavigationView, modal slide-up
Bump windows-reactor + windows to a4f7b2cb (from b4129fcc) for the new PointerEntered/PointerExited events; migration is mechanical renames only (SymbolGlyph->Symbol, placeholder->placeholder_text, on_changed-> on_text_changed/on_toggled, on_menu_item_clicked->on_item_clicked, on_ready->on_mounted). New runtime model: reactor lost its build.rs, so the client build.rs stages the WinAppSDK bootstrap via windows-reactor-setup::as_framework_dependent() and main calls windows_reactor::bootstrap() (missing either = 0x80040154 at launch); staged filenames unchanged, so pack-msix and the MSIX manifest are untouched. - Host tiles: WinUI pointer-over fill (ControlFillSecondary) via the new pointer enter/exit events, hover id in root state (backend-wired handlers bypass the reconciler flush, like the flyout clicks). - Settings: stock NavigationView sidebar (Windows-Settings pattern) with Display/Video/Input/Audio/About panes, built-in back arrow, wide content column, and a per-section content slide-up tween. The section card is KEYED by section: an in-place diff across sections re-sets a reused ComboBox's items (clearing WinUI's selection) but skips selected_index when the values compare equal, rendering a blank selection - the key forces a remount. Card titles/descriptions dropped; per-control guidance moved to hover tooltips (ToolTipService). - New "Show the stats overlay (HUD)" setting (show_hud, default on), honored mid-stream via the 400 ms HUD re-render. - Add-host modal: entrance fade + slide-up tween (scrim fades with it). - Self-initiated disconnect (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D -> Ended(None)) returns to the host list silently instead of raising the error banner. feat(clients/windows): all-vendor video pipeline rewrite + app icon + hosts-page tiles
Decode+present rewrite (first real pixels on glass for this client): - Decode: FFmpeg D3D11VA on NVIDIA/AMD/Intel. get_format now only returns AV_PIX_FMT_D3D11 and lets libavcodec build the decode pool from hw_device_ctx (hand-built frames contexts failed three different ways: NVIDIA rejects DECODER|SHADER_RESOURCE arrays, BindFlags=0 fails texture creation, Intel rejects non-128-aligned HEVC surfaces at the first SubmitDecoderBuffers). A DXVA profile probe before the hwdevice commits hardware-vs-software up front instead of burning the opening IDR; extra_hw_frames covers the frames the client holds. - Present: the decoded slice is copied with ONE display-size-boxed CopySubresourceRegion (a planar slice is a single subresource in D3D11; the old two-copy D3D12-style code silently no-opped - the black screen) into a sampleable NV12/P010 texture, per-plane SRVs + YUV->RGB shaders. - New dedicated render thread (render.rs): presenting is decoupled from the XAML thread; frame-latency-waitable swapchain + SetMaximumFrameLatency(1), newest-wins drain after the wait, crossbeam frame channel with pts for a capture->presented p50 log. - HiDPI: pixel-sized buffers + SetMatrixTransform(96/dpi) - was blurry at 125/150 % scaling. - Software fallback now feeds the same shaders (swscale -> NV12/P010 planes -> two dynamic plane textures); ps_rgba/X2BGR10 path deleted, hw/sw colour math identical. - Adapter selection for hybrid boxes: PUNKTFUNK_ADAPTER > the window's monitor's adapter > default; PUNKTFUNK_D3D_DEBUG=1 debug layer. - Session pump: request_keyframe at start and on hw->sw demotion (infinite GOP would otherwise sit on a black screen). Validated live on the Arc Pro + RTX 3500 Ada laptop against the local Windows host: 60 fps D3D11VA on both vendors, software path, GUI on glass. Also: embedded app icon (build.rs winresource + WM_SETICON, MSIX Square44x44 targetsize assets, pack-msix stages them) and the hosts-page tile rework (tap-to-connect tiles with sibling overflow menu - fixes forget-also-connects - in-tile rename editor, add-host modal via root state). refactor: drop milestone names + consolidate clients; loss-recovery & rumble fixes
Two bodies of work in one commit (the rename moved files the fixes also touched). Naming/structure cleanup (pre-launch): - Host modules m3.rs->punktfunk1.rs, m0.rs->spike.rs; CLI m3-host->punktfunk1-host, m0->spike; bare `punktfunk-host` now prints help. Types M3Options/M3Source-> Punktfunk1Options/Punktfunk1Source. - Clients consolidated out of crates/ into clients/: punktfunk-client-rs-> clients/probe (crate punktfunk-probe), client-linux->clients/linux, client-windows->clients/windows, punktfunk-android->clients/android/native (crate punktfunk-client-android; kept [lib] name=punktfunk_android so the JNI contract is unchanged). crates/ now holds only core + host. - Milestone codes M0-M4 purged from code/CLI/CLAUDE.md/README/docs/docs-site, kept only in docs/implementation-plan.md. docs/m2-plan.md-> docs/gamestream-host-plan.md. CI/gradle/flatpak paths updated. Client loss-recovery (video froze and never recovered after a brief drop): - Export punktfunk_connection_frames_dropped through the C ABI (the core already tracked it for the client keyframe-recovery loop; it was never reachable from the ABI clients). Regenerated punktfunk_core.h. - Apple (StreamPump + Stage2Pipeline) and Android (decode.rs) now poll frames_dropped and request a keyframe when it climbs -- the same loss-driven recovery Linux/Windows already had. Under infinite GOP the decoder silently conceals reference-missing frames, so the decode-error trigger rarely fires. Apple rumble robustness (worked then went spotty -- DualSense + Xbox): - Add CHHapticEngine stopped/reset handlers (rebuild on app background / audio interruption / server reset) and drop the permanent `broken` latch on a transient drive failure; latch only when the controller truly has no haptics. - Surface swallowed SDL set_rumble errors on Linux/Windows + diagnostic logging. Verified: cargo build/clippy/fmt --workspace, C-ABI harness, header drift. Not runnable on this box (verify in CI): Gitea workflows, gradle/Android, flatpak, Swift/decky.
