feat(pad-audio): DualSense audio haptics + speaker, host->client end to end
The 0xD1 pad-audio plane streams a DualSense's voice-coil haptics (back channel pair, 5 ms Opus frames) and speaker (front pair, 10 ms) per pad from a Windows host to the SDL clients, which render them into a USB DualSense's own 4-channel audio device. Wire (punktfunk-core, ABI v15): PAD_AUDIO_MAGIC 0xD1 [pad][kind][seq][pts] [opus]; CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x04 / HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x20; per-pad render capability rides GamepadArrival flags bits 8/9, sent only toward a host that advertised its cap so old hosts see byte-identical arrivals; silence is a frozen seq (mic-mute discipline), loss is a seq gap concealed via AudioGapTracker. HidOutput::AudioCtl (0xCD kind 0x06) forwards the 0x02 report's audio-control bytes 5..=10 change-only, value-deduped, with a once-per-pad "title asserted haptics-select" diagnosis log. Windows host endpoint provider (audio/windows/pad_endpoint.rs): per-pad render endpoints are additional devnode instances of Valve's Steam Streaming Speakers driver (SetupDiRegisterDeviceInfo, NOT the class installer - it needs an interactive window station), stamped with DualSense identity: desc "Wireless Controller", device name "DualSense Wireless Controller", ContainerId = the virtual pad's PFDS GUID, 4ch/48k format triplet. IPropertyStore route first, ACL-repaired registry fallback (the MMDevices keys deny writes even to SYSTEM; the owner's implicit WRITE_DAC + an ACE for S-1-5-18 resolved by SID is the way in). Provisioned at host startup (PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO, PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO_SLOTS, default 1), idempotent via a persisted PunktfunkPadIndex marker; pad endpoints are structurally ineligible for the mic/loopback wiring plan and guarded against default- device theft; capture is WASAPI loopback on the stamped endpoint. Devtest: punktfunk-host pad-endpoint ensure|remove|status. Host service (native/pad_audio.rs): per-(session,pad) thread, loopback 4ch -> pair splitter -> per-kind stereo Opus (48k LowDelay CBR 64k) -> per-kind silence gate (opens at peak>=1e-3, 250 ms hangover, gated = no send + frozen seq) -> datagrams. Spawned from the native input pump when a DualSense/Edge arrival carries audio bits and both caps negotiated; idempotent re-arrivals; reaped on remove and teardown. Client tier A (pf-client-core/pad_audio.rs): settings pad_haptics (default on) and pad_speaker (default "pad"); tier A = wired USB DS5/Edge via SDL connection state with an audio-sibling fallback; correlation maps the SDL HID path to the pad's own render endpoint (Windows: ContainerId match + 4ch gate via registry; Linux: Sony sink signature); renderer decodes both kinds into a quad interleave and plays it on the pad's endpoint (WASAPI autoconvert / PipeWire target.object, 240-2400 frame ring floor, dont-reconnect so an unplug never re-routes haptics to the desktop speakers). SDL's DualSense driver sets "disable audio haptics" whenever it drives rumble emulation, so tier-A pads suppress wire rumble and send one cleared-enable-bits effects packet to keep the actuators live; AudioCtl bytes fold back into the effects packet at report-minus-one offsets. Verification: punktfunk-core 265 tests (macOS) + clippy -D warnings (mac + Linux docker); pf-inject 85 tests (Linux docker); punktfunk-host cargo check + clippy + 19 pad tests + 46 audio-module tests (Windows box); pf-client-core 30 tests + clippy (Linux docker CI image) + cargo check (Windows box); punktfunk-client-session clippy (Linux) + check (Windows); cargo fmt --all --check clean on the final tree. NOT yet verified: any on-glass run (host deploy + real title + physical pad), the stamp-route split at runtime, exclusive-mode Initialize isolation, Linux-host emission (the per-pad PipeWire sink is not in this change - Windows hosts only). Scope excluded deliberately: tier B (Apple CoreHaptics) and tier C (haptics->rumble derivation), pad_speaker="mix", Android leg, settings UI surfaces (keys are serde-defaulted), GameStream-plane arrivals (audio_caps always 0 there). Windows clippy on the v0.23.0 tag: `doc_lazy_continuation` in crates/pf-client-core/src/audio_wasapi.rs:37. The cause is one line break — `+ wire cost.` begins a line, so the markdown parser reads `+` as a bullet marker and the following line becomes a lazy continuation of that list item. Fixed by reflowing so the `+` is mid-line rather than by taking clippy's suggested indent: indenting would keep the accidental bullet in the rendered docs, which is the actual defect. Same treatment for the two siblings a sweep of every `///` line found, both invisible to the Linux gate for their own reasons: - gamestream/audio.rs:237 — `+ libopus;` at line start, on the cfg(not(linux/windows)) stub, so only a macOS clippy would ever see it. - mgmt/tests.rs:1653 — `404.` at line start IS an ordered-list marker (CommonMark: 1-9 digits + `.`), and it is behind cfg(test), so only an --all-targets run sees it. This is the [[Windows clippy sees what the Linux gate structurally cannot]] shape again: audio_wasapi.rs is cfg(windows), so no amount of Linux CI would have caught it. Verified: a scanner over every .rs doc comment in the tree now reports zero line-initial list markers with an unindented continuation; rustfmt clean (it does not reflow doc comments, so these edits are stable). |

A channel nobody has published to answers `manifest.json` with a 404, and the check reported that the same way it reports a dead registry or a bad signature: "Last check failed: feed returned HTTP 404". Every host on the stable channel shows it today, because the stable manifest only publishes when someone dispatches `announce` for a release tag — so the first thing an operator sees from the new Updates card is a red failure caused by nothing being wrong. The shared checker now distinguishes the two. `feed::fetch_manifest_blocking` returns a typed `FeedError` instead of a string, and only a 404 on the manifest ITSELF becomes `NotPublished` — a 404 on the detached signature still fails loudly, because that is the half-published pair the manifest-then-signature upload order can produce, and it must stay fail-closed. The host carries that through as `UpdateStatus.not_published`, mutually exclusive with `last_error`. It is benign only while no manifest has ever been seen for the channel: once a check has succeeded, the same 404 means the feed LOST a document it used to serve, which stays an error. The console then shows a plain sentence naming the channel instead of the failure banner, and "None published yet" rather than "Not checked yet". The Linux client makes the same distinction but deliberately NOT the same choice: `--check-update` keeps exiting 1 and keeps `error` set, because its consumer is a shell script and an empty channel is the absence of evidence that this build is current — not a confirmation that it is. Merge origin/main into audio/mic-latency-echo
Main moved through the same surfaces while the audio work was in flight, so three files needed hand-resolution: - clients/windows/src/app/settings.rs — main gave Windows its speaker and microphone endpoint pickers, the gap this branch could only report. Both keep their rows: the pickers, then Echo cancellation, and the microphone description keeps the sentence naming the mute chord. - crates/pf-console-ui/src/screens/settings.rs — both sides grew the couch row list. Main's seven new rows and Echo cancellation are all reachable in Gaming Mode; the count is 22 and the rationale comment names echo cancellation among the fields that would otherwise be unreachable there. - crates/pf-presenter/src/run.rs — both sides added a stats test at the same line. Reinstall a host, wipe its ProgramData, or otherwise regenerate its identity, and the desktop clients refused it forever: "Host identity rejected — wrong fingerprint, or the host requires pairing", including immediately after a successful re-pair. There was no way out of it from the UI — the host list showed two cards for one address and forgetting the wrong one was a guess. `KnownHosts::upsert` matches on the FINGERPRINT, which is what lets a host that moved address keep its record and everything the user set on it. A host that changed identity matched nothing, so pairing appended a SECOND record for an address that already had one, and `find_by_addr` returned whichever came first in the file — the dead one, every time. Trust decisions (PIN ceremony, delegated approval, TOFU accept, headless pair — all funnelled through `persist_host`, plus the Windows shell's two direct upserts) now go through `upsert_trusted`, which retires any OTHER record for that address. Retired means DELETED, not demoted: a record whose certificate the host no longer holds cannot connect, so keeping it only reproduces the two- cards-one-address confusion this fixes. What described the box rather than the identity — its MAC, its OS chain, the bound profile, the pinned cards, when it was last used — moves onto the record that survives, so a reinstall doesn't quietly cost the user their setup. What described the dead identity does not: `paired` and `clipboard_sync` are decisions about one specific certificate and have to be made again for a new one, and the retired record's stable id stays retired (a deep link written from it falls through to the `host=` recovery the link grammar already specifies). Only trust decisions may retire a record. The wake path's address re-key and every learn-from-advert path stay on plain `upsert`: those are driven by unauthenticated mDNS, and letting an advert delete a saved host by claiming its address would trade this bug for a much worse one. A plain reconnect still fails closed on a pin mismatch — nothing here changes what the pin is checked against. Stores that already hold the duplicate recover on the next connect, not at load: which of two records is live isn't knowable at load time and guessing wrong would throw away the good one. Instead `find_by_addr` stops being positional — a real fingerprint beats a placeholder, and among real ones the newest trust decision wins, since records are only ever appended by one. The next successful pair then cleans the store up for good. Every lookup that picks a pin or a per-host decision for a connect now goes through it (the session's pin and clipboard read, the deep-link resolver, orchestrate's plan, both speed tests, the CLI's --wake and --library, which had also been ignoring the port), and an advert's learned MAC/OS lands on the record it identified rather than on a stale namesake that merely came first. A user's 1080p stream repeated its last row of pixels over the final few rows, so the image looked stretched at the bottom. The Vulkan-Video CSC pass sampled the decoded planes with the fullscreen triangle's normalized 0..1 UVs, but its render target is built at the CROPPED frame size. Those are not the same rectangle: FFmpeg sizes the decode pool from `avctx->coded_*`, and H.264 codes `16 * mb_height` — so a 1080-row picture decodes into a 1088-row pool. Destination row 1079 sampled source row ~1087.5, dragging the 8 alignment rows into view and squashing the picture 0.7%. Encoders fill that padding by replicating the last picture line, which is why it reads as a smeared bottom row rather than garbage. Confirmed on glass (.173, RTX, H.264 1080p, vulkan-video): Vulkan Video first frame width=1920 height=1080 pool_w=1920 pool_h=1088 `VkVideoFrame` now carries the pool extent and `record_csc` takes a `uv_scale`, written to the shader's `params.zw` — which the CSC shader already reserved for a use like this. The chroma cositing offset is unchanged and stays correct: `textureSize` reports the pool width, which is the space the scaled UV is already in. Only the Vulkan-Video path passes a scale below 1.0. D3D11VA already clamps this in its VideoProcessor blit (the same bug, seen as a green bar there because DXVA padding is uninitialized rather than replicated); dmabuf imports its planes at the crop over the real stride; PyroWave allocates its ring at exact stream dims. Apple and Android crop at the OS layer. Every other call site passes [1.0, 1.0], so the change is inert there. Also adds a one-time first-frame layout log mirroring the D3D11VA one, so the frame-vs-pool gap is visible in the field instead of having to be re-derived from FFmpeg internals. feat(client): the mic has an off switch, and echo cancellation has a switch too
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V mutes and unmutes the microphone mid-stream — V for
voice, since M and S were taken. The uplink keeps running while muted:
`MicStreamer::spawn` takes a shared AtomicBool the capture callback reads
every quantum, and a muted callback drains whole frames and sends
nothing. Stopping the stream instead would have re-primed the device
buffers and, on Linux, re-run source selection on every unmute — a
second of glitch for a key people press mid-sentence. The sequence
counter deliberately does NOT advance while muted, so the host sees one
continuous sequence with a pause rather than a gap the size of the mute,
which its de-jitter would try to conceal frame by frame (its 600 ms
stale-flush covers the rest).
The mute lives on SessionHandle as a MicControl with two flags, not one:
`live` is raised by the pump only once the uplink is actually running, so
a session with the mic off in Settings — or whose capture device wouldn't
open — reports "nothing to mute", the chord says so in the log, and no
indicator appears. Per session, never persisted.
Muted state draws as a persistent "Microphone muted" badge in the stream's
top-right corner, off `FrameCtx::mic_muted` rather than the stats text: it
has to be there with the stats overlay Off, which is where most people
leave it. The Detailed mic line still reads throughput, so it simply falls
to zero — the badge is what answers "am I muted".
Echo cancellation stops being an env-only lever. `Settings::echo_cancel`
(default on, `#[serde(default)]` so every stored file loads with it on)
now gates the same hooks PUNKTFUNK_NO_AEC gated: the echo-cancelled
PipeWire source preference and WASAPI's Communications stream category.
The env var still wins, one-way — it can only turn AEC off, never back on
— and both `aec_enabled` helpers say so. The row ships in the GTK, WinUI
and console settings, under the microphone toggle and greyed out while it
is off, matching what Apple and Android shipped in wave 1.
SettingsOverlay grows `echo_cancel` as a first-class field — apply,
absorb, clear, is_empty — instead of riding the `extra` passthrough, where
`clear_override("echo_cancel")` answered false. The JSON key is the one
Apple and Android already write, so one catalog round-trips through all
three.

The cross-platform half of the gap sweep: * Phase-locked capture reaches the DESKTOP clients (it shipped on Apple/Android only, though the desktop presenter has the best latch signal of all — true on-glass stamps via VK_KHR_present_wait). The presenter's 1 Hz fold publishes a latch grid (anchor = last on-glass instant; period = min positive present spacing, capped by the display mode's refresh so an arrival-paced sub-panel-rate stream can't claim a slower grid); the session pump folds every AU's arrival stamp against it with the SHARED `phase::circular_latch` statistic and sends the ~1 Hz PhaseReport (1 ms uncertainty — reference-client parity). The cap is advertised only when present timing is real (`VulkanDecodeDevice::present_timing` gates `SessionParams::phase_lock`), and the host's applied grid offset from the 0xCF tail is logged so an on-glass run can watch the controller engage. * `Hello::display_hdr` stops being hardcoded `None`: Windows reads the panel's colour volume from DXGI (`IDXGIOutput6::GetDesc1`, the `--window-pos` output else the primary, advanced-color outputs only, gated on the HDR setting) so the host's virtual-display EDID matches the real glass. Uplink format on both desktops: 10 ms mono frames (was 20 ms stereo), Opus Voip at 48 kbps with in-band FEC against 10 % assumed loss — half the frame-fill latency, half the samples, and a lost datagram's audio now rides in its successor. One datagram per frame, unchanged wire. Linux: the capture stream finally asks for its own quantum (NODE_LATENCY 480/48000) instead of inheriting the graph's 1024-2048 sample bursts, and when the user picked no mic it prefers an existing echo-cancel source over the default (PUNKTFUNK_NO_AEC=1 opts out; loading module-echo-cancel ourselves needs a load_module the pipewire crate doesn't expose yet). Windows: the capture client declares AudioCategory_Communications before Initialize so an endpoint's communications APO (the system AEC) can engage; capture stays stereo via autoconvert — the proven path — and downmixes to mono in code. The rest of the client-gaps handoff, plus what a parity sweep surfaced: * Every whole-file settings save rebases on the file first — the GTK dialog close and its two speed-test apply arms, the Windows per-control commit, the console screen. The file has five writers and no merge (profiles.rs documents the debt); saving a shell-lifetime snapshot silently reverted whatever another writer stored meanwhile, most visibly the spawner-persisted match-window size (item 4). * Windows honors the Speaker/Microphone picks: `audio_wasapi` grows endpoint enumeration (on its own MTA thread — UI threads are STA) and resolves PUNKTFUNK_AUDIO_SINK/SOURCE as endpoint ids, falling back to the default when the picked device is gone; the settings page gets the two rows (defaults scope, "(not detected)" like the GPU row). `speaker_device`/`mic_device` stop being Linux-only fields (item 5). * A punktfunk:// link with `launch=` opened a plain desktop session on Windows — the id was parsed, validated, planned, and dropped at the last hop. It now rides `initiate_launch` (plus a waking variant for the dial-first path). Linux always forwarded it. * The console UI offered "VAAPI" on Windows — a dead option there that also hid d3d11va, the actual Windows hardware path. feat(client): 4:4:4 can stay on hardware, and the overlay says what you actually got
Two halves of the same honesty problem (client-gaps handoff items 1+2,
done together as the handoff asked).
The presenter learns full chroma: `vkframe_plane_views` accepts the
2-plane 4:4:4 pool formats (8-bit, and the 10-bit 3PACK16 sibling) —
what NVIDIA's Vulkan Video reports for HEVC RExt decode — with the
accepted set extracted into `vkframe_plane_formats` and pinned by a
decision-table test. The CSC shader needed nothing: its 4:2:0 siting
correction already self-disables when the plane widths match. The VAAPI
leg gets the same treatment (NV24 in `drm_fourcc_for` and the dmabuf
import, full-size chroma plane), and the Vulkan decoder's sw-format
gate admits NV24/P410. 3-plane 4:4:4 stays rejected — it needs a third
CSC binding — and demotes cleanly like every other unsupported format.
Design call (the handoff's fork, argued here as requested): (B)+(C),
not (A). No capability probe gates VIDEO_CAP_444 — software decode is
the guaranteed display floor on both OSes (swscale → RGBA), the decoder
ladder demotes on its own, and a probe-gated bit would turn the switch
inert on exactly the boxes that rely on the fallback. What (A) wanted
from a prediction, the overlay now delivers as ground truth:
The Detailed tier prints the encoder's target next to the measured
rate — `19.4 Mb/s · target 20 Mb/s (auto)` — and the resolved chroma,
`4:4:4→4:2:0` when the host declined the ask (mirroring `HDR→SDR`).
The target is live: `NativeClient::current_bitrate_kbps()` mirrors
every BitrateChanged ack, so an Automatic session's ABR re-targets are
visible as they move. This is the figure whose absence let the
settings-drop bug (

Since spec mode (`f32c3aaa`, shipped in 0.22.0) the GTK shell has handed the session a `--resolved-spec` built from `Settings::default()`. A session running from a spec performs ZERO store reads by design, so every stream since has run at the defaults: `bitrate_kbps: 0` reaches the host, which reads it as its 20 Mbps fallback — the field report this starts from, "my bitrate seems to be stuck at 20 MBPS" on 0.22.3 — and with it the resolution, refresh, render scale, codec, decoder, HDR, 4:4:4, audio channels, mic, touch/mouse mode, invert scroll, stats tier, match-window and gamepad type. Profiles never applied at all: the spec's `profile` was None, and spec mode ignores `--profile`. The tell in the wild is that the GPU and audio-device pickers kept working — the session reads those three off disk into env vars before it reads the spec. The plan carried a comment explaining that `settings` "carries only what the argv needs (the fullscreen flag)". That was true when it was written and stopped being true one commit later, in another file. `ConnectPlan::for_target` answers that shape of bug: a front-end holding its own request type resolves through the same helper the session's compat path uses, so there is no hand-built `Settings` left to go stale. The GTK shell's `fullscreen_on_stream` parameter goes with it — that is a tier-P field, and a shell-read global was beating a profile that set it. The Windows shell was never affected (it spawns with no spec) but had the same fullscreen-vs-profile bug, so it moves onto the resolver too. The audit that followed found four more settings stored, rendered in two UIs, and read by nothing: - `enable_444` never became `VIDEO_CAP_444`. "Full chroma (4:4:4)" is announced in the 0.22.0 notes for Linux and Windows and did nothing on either; only Apple advertised the bit. The host already gates it on its own policy, its capturer, HEVC and a real GPU probe, and answers the resolved chroma in the Welcome before we build a decoder — the client only has to ask. There is no desktop decode probe (Apple has `Stage444Probe`), but the presenter bails cleanly on a plane format it doesn't know and demotes to software, so the downside is a slow decode, not a broken one. - `session_params` picked the HEIGHT fallback off `settings.width == 0`. - `cli::exec_session` dropped `--profile` from its forward list, so `punktfunk --connect … --profile Work` from a script or a Decky wrapper streamed with the host's binding instead. - `ResolvedSpec::write_temp` named the spec by the SPAWNER's pid alone, so a cancelled connect and the retry behind it shared one path — and the first child's exit deleted the file the second was still starting up to read. The toggle has been stored, profileable and rendered in two settings UIs since profiles landed, and nothing read it. Windows grabbed the keyboard whenever input was captured, setting or no setting; Linux never grabbed at all, because the grab sat behind `#[cfg(windows)]` with a comment deferring the compositor story to "the shells" — which never picked it up. `Settings.inhibit_shortcuts` now reaches the presenter and gates the grab, on both platforms. SDL3 already maps `SDL_SetWindowKeyboardGrab` onto `zwp_keyboard_shortcuts_inhibit_manager_v1` on Wayland and `XGrabKeyboard` (plus `_XWAYLAND_MAY_GRAB_KEYBOARD`) on X11, so dropping the cfg is the Linux fix. Capture state still gates it, so releasing input hands the chords straight back, and the desktop mouse model never grabs. A compositor with no shortcuts-inhibit global says so once instead of failing silently — at debug under gamescope, which has no shortcuts to inhibit in the first place. Delivery used to be all-or-nothing: the decoder saw byte 0 only after the last packet of the AU landed, so the whole transmit time sat in front of decode. With the slice-streamed wire (previous commit) blocks now arrive addressable, and a client can opt in (connect's new frame_parts) to receive each AU's newly-contiguous prefix as Frame::part pieces - offset tiling, first/last marked, the completing push carrying only the suffix. A PARTIAL_FRAME-capable decoder then chews slices concurrently with the remaining network transfer. The reassembler walks a per-frame cursor over successfully-completed blocks (failed FEC reconstructs don't advance it), coalesces blocks that finished out of order into one part, keeps probe filler whole, and stops short of the final block so the zero-padded tail still trims at completion. Whole-frame consumers see byte-identical behavior - parts never flow without the opt-in, and never on PyroWave (its newest-wins draining assumes whole AUs). Per-AU accounting keeps its units: OWD/ABR feeds, the inter-arrival series and the clock-based jump-to-live detector only count completing deliveries, and FrameChannel::depth() counts AUs so a part-rich queue can't trip jump-to-live at a fraction of the real backlog. The consumer contract (gap or orphan part = AU lost: abandon, flush, resync on the next first) is documented on FramePart; the C ABI keeps parts off until PunktfunkFrame can express them. feat(client/linux): the client says whether it is current, and can update itself
`punktfunk-client --check-update` fetches the same Ed25519-signed per-channel manifest the host trusts, works out how this client was installed, and reports what — if anything — can be done about a newer build. `--apply-update` does the part it owns. `--version` prints the CI-stamped build string, which is both what the comparison needs and what a packaging gate can run the binary for. The engine lives here rather than in the Decky plugin for two reasons: verifying a signature needs crypto that Decky's embedded Python does not have, and the plugin is not the only surface that wants the answer. Every UI becomes a caller, exactly as it already is for --pair, --library and --list-hosts. What is possible depends on the install, and the module refuses to pretend otherwise. A flatpak is a per-user install its launcher can update. A .deb/.rpm/ pacman client goes through the packaged root helper — a fixed, parameterless systemd oneshot polkit authorises for members of the punktfunk-update group, so the request carries nothing an attacker could influence and the payload comes from the distro's own signed repositories. A sysext, a nix profile or a source build gets the command and nothing else: the signed sysext feed carries the HOST image, so a client sysext has no feed to update from, and a button that can only fail is worse than one honest line. A failed check reports the failure. "Could not tell" rendering as "up to date" is the one answer that must never happen. The box's capabilities are probed once into a `Caps` struct so the routing rules are a pure function of (install kind, caps) — all seven of them are tested without a box, including that the kill switch beats every kind and that pacman needs its own root-owned full-sysupgrade opt-in on top of the group. feat(core): every connect introduces the device by name
The wire always had Hello.name and the host always honored it - but the connect path hardcoded None (only the PIN-pairing ceremony sent a name), so every no-PIN "request access" knock surfaced as the fingerprint placeholder "device abcd1234", and approving one without retyping a name persisted that placeholder into the trust store forever. NativeClient::connect now takes the device name. The session workers and the probe connects pass trust::device_name() (the hostname), the C ABI defaults to the same without a signature change (an ex10 variant can make it explicit if an embedder wants a custom label), and Android threads Build.MODEL through nativeConnect - the same convention its pairing dialogs already use for nativePair. The host, in turn, resolves the streaming client's display name (trust store first, so an approval-time rename wins; else the sanitized Hello name) and exposes it as client_name in GET /api/v1/local/summary for the tray's connect toast - a deliberate, documented loosening of that route's "no device names" contract, in the local user's favor: it tells them who is on their machine. A paired-but-idle device's name still never appears, which the mgmt tests now pin explicitly. openapi.json, its docs-site copy, and the SDK bindings regenerate. The July 2026 windows-rs brings a reconciler keyed-child-order fix (#4728), widget validation (#4727), a DPI collision fix (#4751), icon elements (#4736), multi-window support (#4730) and scroll virtualization (#4710) — the re-render fixes the Windows client has been working around at the architecture level. All three pinned deps (windows-reactor, windows, windows-reactor-setup) move together so windows-core stays unified across the swap-chain hand-off, and pf-client-core moves with them. The bulk of the diff is #4689: windows/windows-sys now generate straight from the Windows SDK, so the `Win32_*` namespace features became one feature per SDK header (winuser, dxgi, d3d11, …), the PascalCase namespace modules became header-named modules, struct-returning COM methods take explicit out-params and return HRESULT, Win32 functions return their raw BOOL/HANDLE instead of Result, and flag constants are plain integers. Both crates' Win32 code is rewritten to that shape; behaviour is unchanged on every path. Riding along, all already stale before the bump: the README and the three Windows workflows stop claiming windows-reactor's build.rs needs CARGO_WORKSPACE_DIR (that build.rs no longer exists — staging moved to windows-reactor-setup via OUT_DIR); the README layout section stops describing modules that moved into the session binary long ago and gains the manual smoke checklist; the notices generator learns the SPDX for crates that ship license files without a `license` field, which turns windows-reactor-setup's UNKNOWN into MIT OR Apache-2.0; and the crate records its real rust-version (1.96) instead of inheriting the workspace's 1.82. Verified: cargo check/clippy/fmt clean on punktfunk-client-windows, pf-client-core and punktfunk-client-session; both bins build; --discover finds the LAN hosts; the GUI shell comes up (WinAppSDK bootstrap intact under the new reactor-setup). The client half of the host's new `os=` advert, shared once in pf-client-core: `sanitize_os` (mDNS is unauthenticated input — lowercase `[a-z0-9._-]` tokens, capped) and `os_icon_tokens`, the most-specific-first walk with the brand aliases (`macos`→apple, `steamos`→steam) every platform resolves through. `DiscoveredHost` carries the chain, `KnownHost` persists it (`serde(default)`, elided when empty — older stores load unchanged and older clients read back exactly what they wrote), `upsert` moves it only when carried, and `learn_os` mirrors `learn_mac` — no-op, no disk write when unchanged — so the mark survives the host going to sleep. GTK shells: the card's status row leads with a recolorable symbolic glyph. That needed real embedded assets — the shells had none — so `data/` gains the ten `pf-os-*-symbolic` SVGs compiled into a gresource (new build.rs, glib-build-tools) and registered on the icon theme at startup; the Adwaita theme then tints them like every other status glyph. WinUI shell: reactor renders raster-from-URI only, so the embedded mid-gray PNGs (legible on both themes) materialize once into %LOCALAPPDATA%\punktfunk\os-icons\ — the library's poster-art pattern — and the tile's status row leads with a 16px image. The couch UI plumbs `HostRow.os` (live advert preferred, else the store) for a Skia glyph that is a declared follow-up; `--list-hosts` / `hosts --json` emit the stored chain so the Decky plugin can read it. fix(client/linux): the override marker appears on touch, profiles get a colour, and 4:4:4 gets a switch
Three things found by actually driving the client. **The marker didn't appear until you reopened the dialog.** It was rendered once, at build time, from the stored overlay — so changing a setting inside a profile looked like it did nothing. The design says touching a control creates the override and the marker appears immediately, and it has to: a user who changes a row and sees no acknowledgement has no reason to believe it took. Every profileable row now builds its dot and reset hidden, and the same handler that records the touch reveals them. Resetting a row touched in the same sitting also un-touches it, so the commit can't re-write what the reset just removed. **Profiles had no colour.** `accent` has been in the schema since P0 and nothing could set it, which left every chip the same grey — and telling profiles apart at a glance across a grid is the entire reason chips exist. Creating a profile now picks a colour in the same breath as its name (hunting for it afterwards is what leaves them all grey), an existing profile has a Colour row, and host-card chips are tinted with it. A palette of eight rather than a free picker: legibility across light and dark is the job, and the schema still accepts any `#RRGGBB` a hand-edit or a future picker writes. Anything that isn't `#RRGGBB` is refused rather than interpolated into CSS, and each distinct colour registers one display-wide rule (per-widget providers are gone since GTK 4.10). **4:4:4 had no switch anywhere but Apple.** `VIDEO_CAP_444` has been on the wire for a while with only `punktfunk-probe`'s env var to set it. It is now a setting — and a profileable one, which is the point: full chroma is what makes small text and thin UI lines crisp, so a "Work" profile wants it where "Game" usually doesn't. The host still gates it on its own policy, HEVC, and a GPU that can actually encode it; advertising only says "I can decode this and I want it". feat(ffi): hand-mirrored C structs are now layout-checked at compile time
The sharpest memory-safety risk left in this codebase is not an `unsafe` block — it is a hand-written `#[repr(C)]` mirror of an external C struct. Get a field offset wrong and nothing fails to compile and nothing reliably crashes: the library reads a pointer, a length or a pitch out of the wrong bytes. Eleven such structs across five files had NO check at all. Guarded here, each next to the struct it protects: * `AVCUDADeviceContext`, and `AVD3D11VADeviceContext`/`AVD3D11VAFramesContext`. `ffmpeg-sys-next` binds none of them, so these mirrors are the only definitions — and we WRITE through them (`cuda_ctx`, `device`, `bind_flags`). ⚠ The D3D11VA pair is duplicated VERBATIM in two crates (pf-encode's `ffmpeg_win.rs`, pf-client-core's `video_d3d11.rs`) because neither can depend on the other; they must agree with libav and with each other, and now a drift in either is a build error. * The six cuda.h structs. Three were already asserted — but only in `#[cfg(test)]`, so the check ran when someone ran the tests and never in a release build. They are `const` now. The other three, including `CUDA_MEMCPY2D` which is filled on EVERY zero-copy frame, had nothing. * `MsghdrX`, Darwin's `msghdr_x`, which `libc` does not expose. Its layout is not reviewable by eye: the 32-bit fields force padding before each following pointer, so `msg_iov` sits at 16 and not 12. `sendmsg_x`/`recvmsg_x` take the pointer and length from it. * `IPolicyConfigVtbl` — the sharpest of the set. It mirrors an UNDOCUMENTED COM interface, and `set_default_endpoint` is called by SLOT INDEX through a ten-entry `_reserved` gap that carries no names to anchor a review. A field added or resized above it does not break the build; it calls a different function pointer through a mismatched signature. Every assertion is `const _: () = assert!(..)`, so it holds on every build including release and cannot be skipped. The compiler verified the numbers — the sizes and offsets asserted here are the ones the target actually produces, on each platform that compiles the struct. Verified: Linux .21 fmt + both CI clippy steps rc=0 (CUDA + libav CUDA mirrors); Windows .47 full CI clippy set rc=0 + pf-capture tests (D3D11VA pair, COM vtable); macOS `cargo check -p punktfunk-core` (MsghdrX — the only platform that compiles it). |

fix(client-core,ffvk): close the proof-lint hole in two of the three unguarded crates
`clippy::undocumented_unsafe_blocks` is what makes the SAFETY convention a rule rather than a habit,
and three crates had never adopted it — pf-client-core (91 unsafe items), pf-presenter (123) and
punktfunk-core (167) — while every other subsystem crate denied it. That gap is why the decoders'
`unsafe impl Send`s carried a one-line aside instead of an argument: nothing required one.
pf-client-core and pf-ffvk now deny it, with a proof written for all 58 + 3 sites they had.
⚠️ 44 of those 58 were WINDOWS-ONLY — `clipboard.rs` 24 and `video_d3d11.rs` 20 — and invisible to
the Linux measurement that sized this work at 14. Same trap as the E0133 sweep: a Linux-only survey
of a cross-platform crate undercounts by whatever the `cfg` hides, here by 3x. Landing the deny on
the strength of that number alone would have re-broken Windows CI, which is exactly the mistake this
session already made once with the `warn`-that-was-really-`deny`.
The proofs say what is actually load-bearing rather than restating the call. In `clipboard.rs` that
is the ownership split Win32 requires and nothing in the code stated: `GetClipboardData` returns a
handle BORROWED from the clipboard (never freed here), while `GlobalAlloc` + `SetClipboardData`
TRANSFERS ownership to it (which is why nothing frees that one either) — two opposite rules, three
lines apart. In `video_d3d11.rs` the recurring one is that libav's `get_format` list is
NUL-terminated by `AV_PIX_FMT_NONE`, which is what keeps the walk in bounds.
Remaining: punktfunk-core (~146, of which `abi.rs` is 141) and pf-presenter (~108). Both want the
"state the contract once" treatment — abi.rs's sites are a handful of repeating shapes (`opt_cstr`
on caller C strings, null-guarded out-param writes, forwarding calls), not 141 distinct arguments.
Note the vendored `fec-rs` (18 sites) is a separate path-dependency crate, so it is out of scope
rather than something to prove.
Verified: Linux .21 fmt + both CI clippy steps rc=0; Windows .47 `-p pf-client-core` clippy
`-D warnings` rc=0 (the only place the 44 are visible), plus the full Windows CI clippy set and
pf-capture's 18 tests.

feat(session): spec mode — the renderer stops resolving policy and stops writing settings
C2 of design/client-architecture-split.md, and the last of the session's overreach.
`--resolved-spec <path>` hands the session everything it needs already resolved —
effective settings, the host's clipboard decision, the profile's name — and in that mode it
performs ZERO store reads. It had been re-deriving all three, which meant policy was being
evaluated inside the thing that draws pixels, and that the spawner and the child could
disagree about a file either of them might have written in between. First-party spawns
(the shells, the CLI) always pass one now.
The compat path stays for hand-run `punktfunk-session --connect` and old Decky scripts —
but it calls the SAME helper, so the two modes cannot drift; it is the identical function
invoked in-process instead of by the parent. A spec that is named but unreadable fails
loudly rather than quietly falling back: a spawner that asked for exact settings must not
get store-derived ones instead.
The match-window write-back is gone too. The callback used to load-modify-save the shared
settings file from inside the renderer — one of that file's five concurrent writers, for a
value only the parent needs. It now reports `{"window":{w,h}}` on stdout and the spawner
persists it, on a real change only. A hand-run session still persists its own window,
because nobody is listening to its stdout there and the event alone would drop the value.
Verified on .21: a spec naming a profile that doesn't exist in the catalog is honoured
(proving no lookup happened), a missing spec errors instead of falling back, and the CLI's
spec file is written and cleaned up per launch.

`unsafe impl Send`/`Sync` is the highest-risk unsafe category here and the one this program had never looked at: a wrong one is cross-thread UB that is invisible at every call site, with no `unsafe` block to catch a reviewer's eye. 49 of them (41 Send, 8 Sync). Two results. **`MappedView`'s `Sync` proof was factually wrong.** It read "only exposes accessors that are safe under concurrent use" — they are not. `read_u8`/`write_u8`/`read_u16` are plain unaligned accesses through `&self`, and `&MappedView` really is shared across threads: `ChannelState::data()` hands out `&'static MappedView`, and pf-xusb, pf-mouse and pf-gamepad all dispatch `WdfIoQueueDispatchParallel` with `NumberOfPresentedRequests = u32::MAX`. The struct's own doc had the right story — consistency is the channel protocol's job — but the `unsafe impl` stated a different, stronger claim, which is the one a reviewer checking that line would rely on. The impl is still sound, for a reason worth writing down: these bytes are mapped into ANOTHER PROCESS that writes them concurrently, so Rust-level exclusivity over them is unachievable no matter what this type does. Sync fields go through the atomic accessors; the plain ones cover only protocol-fenced bytes. The proof now says that, and states the rule it implies for accessors added later — plain path only for bytes the protocol already fences. **Four `Send` impls carried a one-line aside instead of a proof** — the pf-client-core decoders and `DrmFrameGuard`. All four are sound, and each now says why, including the two facts that make them work and were nowhere stated: libav permits a codec context to be used from a thread other than its creator provided use is serialised (`&mut self` is that serialisation), and D3D11's immediate context is thread-AGNOSTIC rather than thread-safe — it wants serialised use, not one fixed thread. Each also records that it is deliberately not `Sync`, which is the invariant a future `impl Sync` would silently break. Every one of the 49 now carries reasoning. Verified: Linux .21 fmt + both CI clippy steps rc=0; Windows .47 `-p pf-client-core` clippy `-D warnings` rc=0 (it compiles the `video_d3d11` proof the Linux run cannot see). The pf-umdf-util edit is comment-only — confirmed by diff, since that crate needs the WDK, which .47 does not have. |

refactor(client-core): three decoder lift methods that took nothing to get wrong
`D3d11Decoder::lift`, `VaapiDecoder::map_dmabuf` and `VulkanDecoder::extract` each take `&mut self`
and NOTHING else. They dereference `self.frame`, the `*mut AVFrame` the decoder allocates in its own
constructor and owns until `Drop` — a pointer no caller supplies, can replace, or can invalidate.
None carried a `# Safety` section, and each body was already one `unsafe {}` with its proof, so the
marker was pure ceremony and its removal moves nothing.
All three live in files the workspace `deny` already covers (`video_vulkan.rs` since the fence came
off it), so they stay fully enforced.
Worth recording why this is where the marker sweep STOPS for these two crates: every remaining
candidate in pf-encode and pf-client-core sits inside a fenced file, and there removing a marker is
not free. The fence excuses `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn`, which only applies to `unsafe fn` BODIES — a
safe fn always needs explicit blocks — so unmarking an ash-dense helper forces exactly the
whole-body `unsafe {}` this program rejected when it rejected `cargo fix`. The way to reach those is
to reclaim the file first, not to unmark inside it.
Verified on .21: fmt + `clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings` + the feature-gated
`-p pf-encode` step, all rc=0.

refactor(client-core): the first fence comes off — video_vulkan.rs is at zero
`video_vulkan.rs` was fenced with the other thirteen GPU/FFI backends, but it never belonged with them: its four sites are not ash calls, they are RAW POINTER DEREFERENCES inside the two FFmpeg `lock_queue`/`unlock_queue` callback trampolines — exactly the case where the lint pays, and where a proof carries an argument instead of restating a signature. Both bodies had none at all. They keep `unsafe extern "C"`: FFmpeg invokes them with a `*mut AVHWDeviceContext`, which is a real contract, now written down. What was missing is why the dereference chain is sound, and it is worth stating because it is not obvious — the trampoline casts between pf_ffvk's `AVHWDeviceContext` and ffmpeg-sys's (the same C struct declared twice), reads `user_opaque`, and dereferences it as a `QueueLock`. That pointer borrows `VkCtxStorage::_queue_lock`, an `Arc<QueueLock>` whose field doc already says it exists to outlive every call the context can make. The proof now connects those two facts, so a future edit to the storage's lifetime has something to contradict. With that, the file needs no exemption and the workspace `deny` covers it: 14 fenced files -> 13. This is what removing a fence is supposed to look like — the sites that are worth narrowing get narrowed, and the exemption disappears rather than being renewed. Verified on .21: fmt + `clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings` + the feature-gated `-p pf-encode` step, all rc=0 with no allow in the file. |

The WinUI half of §5.2: `Target` carries a one-off profile into the session's `--profile`,
the host editor gains the binding picker, and the tile names its bound profile on a chip so
what a plain click will do is visible without opening anything.
Shape notes, both forced by this toolkit rather than chosen:
- The flyout has no submenus, so "Connect with", "Pin as card" and "Unpin card" are flat
items, one per profile, matched by prefix. The prefixes end in ": " so a profile named
"Copy link" can't collide with a fixed entry.
- The binding picker commits on change rather than at Save. The rest of that sheet is text
boxes with draft refs, which need a Save; a ComboBox doesn't, and making it wait would be
the odd one out.
Semantics stay identical to the Linux client, because they are the design's, not the
platform's: "Connect with" never rebinds, "Default settings" is `Some("")` so it really
does override a bound host for one session, and a binding whose profile was deleted reads
as Default settings and resolves to it.
`pf_client_core::clipboard::set_text` is the small addition the crate needed for "Copy
link" — the OS clipboard plumbing was already there, just private to the streaming bridge.

An `rsync` with the wrong destination dropped the Linux shell's sources into `crates/pf-client-core/src/` and they rode along with the previous commit. Nothing referenced them — `lib.rs` never declared the modules, so they were dead weight rather than a build break — but a crate that says it is UI-agnostic must not have a GTK shell sitting in it. Groundwork for the Windows half of P1, and a dedup of the Linux one. The two shells commit differently: GTK writes once when the dialog closes (so it can hand over a list of touched rows), WinUI writes on every control change (so it can't). `absorb` serves the second shape — give it the effective settings before and after one control fired, and it records the field that moved. That is deliberately NOT the diff-on-save the design rejects. The comparison is against the EFFECTIVE settings, i.e. what the control was actually showing, not against the globals — so setting a value back to whatever the global happens to be still records an override, which is exactly the pin the design wants. It only ever adds; removing an override stays an explicit, separate operation. `clear` is that operation, keyed by the overlay's own field names, with `resolution` as the one alias for the width/height/match-window tri-state a single control drives on every client. The GTK reset path now calls it instead of carrying its own `match` — that second list was already a place where the two could drift, and the next client would have made it a third. `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn = "warn"` was adopted workspace-wide in 39513528 on the assumption that
`warn` is a soft setting you can clear at leisure. It is not: ci.yml runs `cargo clippy … -D
warnings`, which promotes it to a hard error, so main has failed on EVERY commit since — Linux
`rust` and `rust-arm64` both dying on `pf-client-core` with 70 E0133 errors, and windows-host.yml
alongside them. A lint level that understates its own severity is worse than a strict one, so this
states what CI already does — `deny` — and writes the exemptions down instead.
Fourteen GPU/FFI backend files take `#![allow(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)]`, each with its reason and
the workspace Cargo.toml carrying the argument in full. They are not "not done yet": measured
across them, 64% of the sites are a single third-party FFI call (ash, pyrowave-sys, libav, the
NVENC/AMF entry tables), and of the 44 `unsafe fn`s only 4 have a body containing no unsafe
operation at all. Since pf-encode also denies `undocumented_unsafe_blocks`, narrowing them means a
hand-written SAFETY comment per line that could only restate the signature — the exact noise that
made `unsafe` stop meaning anything here before. Everything else stays at zero and enforced, and
each allow is removable on its own terms.
Two smaller things this had to clear, both invisible to the job that would have caught them:
- `service.rs`: `undocumented_unsafe_blocks` wants the proof on EACH block, and a comment covering
a group of consecutive `unsafe` statements only credits the first — so the two `OwnedHandle`
wraps became their own statements. Windows-gated, so only the .47 gate sees it.

refactor(client): the D3D11VA decoder owns its refs too, and the owner-only fields say so
Completes the decoder trio. `D3d11vaDecoder::new` had the same cascading unwind as the VAAPI and Vulkan constructors — four branches each unref'ing the hwdevice by hand — and `d3d11va_decode_supported` opened a frames context it released on one exit path while relying on the null check for the other. Both are `AvBuffer` now. The one surviving `av_buffer_unref` in the file is deliberate: it runs before ownership is taken, on the `av_hwdevice_ctx_init` failure ahead of `from_raw`. The Windows gate then caught something worth keeping: `field hw_device is never read`, in all three decoders. It was true and it was new — the hand-written `Drop` used to be the field's only reader, so moving the unref into the type left a field that is *purely* an owner. The compiler cannot express that, so each one now carries a doc comment saying what it is and an explicit `#[allow(dead_code)]`. Deleting the field would free the device early; renaming it `_hw_device` would silence the lint by hiding what it holds. Neither is what we mean. Verified on BOTH platforms this time. Windows runner .133 (the toolchain env from the runner notes, plus `PF_FFVK_VULKAN_INCLUDE` for pf-ffvk): `cargo check -p pf-client-core --all-targets` at EXITCODE=0, clean of the dead-code warnings. Linux .21: `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` exit 0 / zero errors, pf-client-core 34 passed / 0 failed, pf-encode 33 passed / 0 failed. |

refactor(client): the hardware decoders own their hwdevice ref
`VaapiDecoder::new` and `VulkanDecoder::new` create a hwdevice and then do several more fallible things with it — resolve `vkWaitSemaphores`, find the decoder, alloc the context, open it — and every one of those branches unref'd the device by hand, with a `Drop` doing it once more. Six hand-written unrefs between them, each one a line somebody has to remember when adding a step. `video_libav::AvBuffer` owns it instead, so an early `bail!` releases it and the branches carry nothing. It is a deliberate second copy of `pf-encode`'s type: the crates do not depend on each other (host encode and client decode share no code path), and this one needs something the host's does not — see below — so hoisting it to a shared crate would mean giving that crate an ffmpeg dependency and both sets of semantics to save about twenty lines. That extra piece is `into_raw`. `pick_vulkan` hands its frames context to the codec (`(*ctx).hw_frames_ctx = fr` — the codec unrefs it when the context closes), so the wrapper must give up ownership rather than drop. Making the transfer explicit is the point: dropping an `AvBuffer` there too would be exactly the double-unref this type exists to prevent. Two `av_buffer_unref` calls survive in `video_vulkan.rs` on purpose. One runs before ownership is taken (the `av_hwdevice_ctx_init` failure, ahead of `from_raw`); the other releases the codec's OWN pre-existing frames ctx before we replace it, which was never ours to model. Field order preserved: `hw_device` stays declared after `ctx`, so it still releases after each `Drop` frees packet/frame/context — the order the hand-written unref had. Verified on .21 (CachyOS, FFmpeg 62): `cargo check --workspace --all-targets` clean at exit 0 with zero errors — the workspace-wide check owed since the AvBuffer commit — plus pf-client-core 34 passed / 0 failed and pf-encode 33 passed / 0 failed. The decoders themselves still need real VAAPI/Vulkan playback to exercise. |

feat(client): the brain layer — one connect plan, one wake machine, one spawn
C0 of design/client-architecture-split.md. Wake-then-connect exists three times today — GTK's `WakeConnect`/`wake_fallback`, the WinUI shell's `wake_and_connect` (whose comment says it "mirrors the Apple HostWaker"), and Apple's `HostWaker` itself — and the deep-link and profile work was about to make it five. `pf-client-core` already held the ingredients (wol, discovery, trust, library, session); what was missing was the layer that composes them, so every front-end composed them itself. `ConnectPlan` is a resolved intent: which host, which pin, which launch id, which profile, the effective settings, whether to wake. One constructor per door — a card click, a CLI verb, a URL — one type out. `ConnectPlan::resolve` is pure (stores in, plan out), which is what lets the URL router be tested without a config directory; `for_host` is the convenience that loads them. `plan_from_link` is where the deep-link security rules actually live, rather than in each shell: a contradicted fingerprint refuses and says which host it was about, an ambiguous name refuses instead of picking the first, a profile the catalog can't honor refuses BEFORE anything is dialled, and an unknown — or known-but-never-pinned — host becomes a confirmation sheet carrying the claimed name and expected pin, so the first connect is verified rather than blind TOFU. Preempting a live session stays with the caller: only the front-end knows one is running. `WakeWait` is Apple's `HostWaker` cadence as a pure step function — packet at 0 s and every 6 s, presence polled every second, 90 s budget, and a PARK (not an error) at the end, because "it didn't wake in 90 s" is usually "give it 10 more". As a step function each front-end drives it from its own loop and they still agree, and the whole cadence is testable without waiting 90 seconds. Session spawn, its argv and its stdout contract move here too, and the GTK shell now spawns through them — so "which flags does a stream get" and "what does ready mean" have one answer for the shells, the console and the coming CLI. `--profile` deliberately does NOT ride a plain card click: the session resolves the host's binding through the same helper, and passing it would be a second source of truth for one decision. Not yet adopted: the two shells' wake paths. That swap changes the most-used path in the product and the handoff wants it verified on glass with a genuinely sleeping host, which this session couldn't do — so the state machine lands, the duplication stays until it can be verified away. feat(client): the punktfunk:// grammar — one parser, one emitter, one vector file
D0 of design/client-deep-links.md. Apple has shipped `punktfunk://connect/<uuid>` for a
while; this is the same grammar, generalised and given a Rust implementation the GTK and
WinUI shells, the session and the coming CLI all share:
punktfunk://connect/<host-ref>[?fp=…][&host=addr[:port]][&launch=…][&profile=…][&name=…]
The rule the grammar exists to keep is that a URL may only ever do what a click on an
existing card could do, minus trust decisions. So it carries REFERENCES to things that
already exist on this device — never values: no resolution, no bitrate, no codec, so a
web page cannot shape a session beyond picking among the user's own configurations. And
`pair` is not a route: it parses, and refuses, so a link can never start a trust
ceremony. Everything hostile is rejected here, once, for every front-end — 2 KB total
cap, per-parameter caps, strict percent-decoding (a half-escape or invalid UTF-8 is an
error, not a shrug), control characters refused after decoding, launch ids held to the
charset the host and Decky already agree on, and `fp=` that must actually be 64 hex.
Resolution follows the same order everywhere: stable record id → unique host name →
`addr[:port]`, with `host=`+`fp=` as the reinstall recovery path, which is why
self-emitted links carry all three. An ambiguous name refuses rather than guessing; a
stale id with no recovery address refuses rather than dialling "11111111-…" as if it
were a hostname; an unknown-but-plausible address becomes the confirmation sheet, never
an auto-connect.
`pf://` parses as an input alias and is never emitted or registered — claiming a
two-letter scheme on MSIX/Apple is unconditional squatting, and a link that resolves on
one platform only is a trap.
The 44-case `clients/shared/deeplink-vectors.json` is the cross-language contract: this
module's tests run every case, and the Swift and Kotlin ports will run the same file, so
three parsers cannot drift into three different security postures. Refusal codes are
part of that contract, not just the happy path.

feat(client): settings profiles — the override catalog, the one resolver, and the session flag
A client setting is global today: pick 4K@120 HDR and the retro box gets it too.
The one escape hatch (per-host `clipboard_sync`) proves the shape works but covers a
single field. This is P0 of design/client-settings-profiles.md — the headless core the
shells, Apple, Android and the deep-link grammar all build against. No UI yet.
A profile is a NAMED BUNDLE OF OVERRIDES, not a snapshot: `SettingsOverlay` is sparse
`Option`s, so a field the user never touched keeps following the global value live, and
fixing a global once fixes it everywhere. `Some(x)` equal to today's global is still
meaningful — it pins x against a later global change — which is why the UI will write
`Some` on touch and `None` on an explicit reset, never by diffing.
The catalog is its own `client-profiles.json`, deliberately not part of the settings
file: that file has five whole-file load-modify-save writers with no merge, so a profile
written by one would be dropped by the next. Which host uses which profile is a field on
the host record instead of a map keyed by host — that is what dissolves the client's
long-standing "what identifies a host record" question for this feature.
Resolution has exactly one implementation, `trust::effective_settings()`:

Both session construction sites go through it (`main.rs` AND `console.rs` — touching one
and not the other is a Windows-only build break), so the console, and therefore Decky,
honor host bindings with no work of their own. Nothing here can fail a connect: a
deleted binding resolves as "no profile", and a one-off that can't be honored falls back
to the DEFAULTS rather than to the host's own profile — "connect with Work" must never
quietly stream "Game". `--profile <id|name>` is the one-off door for the shells' coming
"Connect with ▸" and for `punktfunk://…&profile=`; `--profile ""` forces the defaults on
a bound host. The active profile's name closes the stats overlay's first line, so
"which profile am I on?" is answerable without leaving the stream.
Also here, because this effort touches every one of these anyway:
- `KnownHost` gains `profile_id`, `pinned_profiles` and a lazily minted stable `id`. The
id is groundwork (design §4.5) — no lookup is re-keyed, `fp_hex`/`addr:port` stay.
- `upsert` now preserves the state the USER set on a record — the profile binding, its
pins, the clipboard decision, the id — against refreshes that carry none of it.
`clipboard_sync` survived that only because the function happened not to mention it.
- `KnownHost::default()` exists so construction sites read `..Default::default()`; five
hand-written literals were exactly how a new field gets silently dropped on re-pair.
- All three client stores now write temp+rename. A torn settings file loads as `Default`
— i.e. silently resets every setting the user has.

Emulation-and-beyond libraries need more than a title and a poster. Every library shape (GameEntry, CustomEntry, CustomInput, ProviderEntryInput) now carries a shared, flattened GameMeta: platform, description, developer, publisher, release_year, genres, tags, region, players. All fields are optional and flat on the wire, so existing library.json files, provider plugins, and clients keep working unchanged. - Installed-store scanners (Steam, Lutris, Heroic, Epic, GOG, Xbox) stamp platform=PC; custom/provider entries carry whatever was authored. - GET /library grows a ?platform= filter (case-insensitive) beside ?provider=. - Console: the add/edit form gets a Details section (round-tripping every field, since update replaces the entry), the poster tile a platform badge (non-PC only — the store badge already implies PC) and the year. - plugin-kit: ProviderEntry accepts the same fields (new GameMeta schema, spread flat); SDK + OpenAPI spec regenerated. - pf-client-core decodes platform for future client badges. fix(client/gamepad): honor an explicit controller type — the per-pad arrival was re-declaring the physical pad
The "Controller type" setting reached the Hello and stopped there. Every pad then opened with a GamepadArrival carrying its DETECTED kind, and the host builds each virtual device from that arrival — the session default is only the fallback for a pad that never declares one. So "emulate my DualSense as a DualShock 4" put a DualSense on the host the instant the controller connected, and no amount of reconnecting helped. Apple and the native clients both; Android already applied the setting per pad. The setting now rides the declaration too: explicit wins for every slot, Automatic keeps per-pad detection so a mixed session stays honest. The physical kind still drives the LOCAL feedback paths — a DualSense emulated as a DualShock 4 keeps its lightbar and adaptive triggers, and a Deck keeps its rumble keep-alive. Regressed in |

feat(session): headless --pair, so a box with only SSH can enrol
`punktfunk-session --pair <PIN> --connect host[:port]` runs the SPAKE2 ceremony with no window and no toolkit, prints the same `paired <addr>:<port> fp=<hex>` line as `punktfunk-client --pair`, and exits. Until now the PIN ceremony lived only in the GTK shell or the Skia console, so enrolling an embedded/kiosk client meant installing a desktop on it — or copying the identity store by hand. Dispatches above every graphics call (the machine may have no display) and is in the `--no-default-features` build: enrolling must never be the reason a minimal image pulls in Skia. `--name` defaults to the hostname instead of the desktop path's hardcoded "Steam Deck". `forget_placeholder` and `device_name` move into pf_client_core::trust so the two binaries share one implementation rather than the session re-deriving them. The host cursor stops riding the video and becomes a real OS cursor on the client (the Parsec/RDP model): pointer feel no longer pays the capture→encode→network→decode→present round trip. Wire (M2a): - Hello grows a client_caps trailing byte (CLIENT_CAP_CURSOR) after the fixed display_hdr block — presence disambiguated by remaining length, which caps the post-HDR tail at 27 bytes (documented); Welcome answers HOST_CAP_CURSOR (capable-and-asked, the 444/clipboard precedent). - CursorShape (0x50, control stream): serial + dims + hotspot + straight RGBA, ≤120px/side so the u16 frame always fits (128² would overshoot); client caches by serial — re-showing a known shape costs 14 bytes, not a bitmap (RDP pointer-cache for free). - CursorState (0xD0 datagram): serial + visible/relative_hint flags + position, sent once per encode-loop tick — latest-wins, self-healing under loss, no refresh timer. relative_hint is reserved for M3. - Client core: two new planes (control-task + datagram-task arms) → next_cursor_shape/next_cursor_state; connect() grows client_caps (C ABI passes 0 until the v11 cursor poll fns exist). Host (M2b, Linux portal only): - handshake::cursor_forward is THE predicate (client asked ∧ Linux ∧ compositor ≠ gamescope) — Welcome bit and session wiring both read it. - SessionPlan.cursor_blend goes false for a forwarding session; the encode loop ticks a CursorForwarder every iteration: shape-serial diff → control-task bridge (mirrors probe_result), state datagram → conn. - CursorOverlay/capture CursorState carry the hotspot through (nearest-neighbor downscale backstop for XL cursors, unit-tested). Presenter: - CursorChannel drains both planes per loop iteration; shapes become SDL color cursors (from_surface + hotspot), applied while the desktop mouse model is engaged; visibility follows the host; capture/released hands back the system cursor. Sessions advertise the cap when they START in desktop mode. Verified on .21: fmt + clippy -D warnings (7 crates) + tests green (core 218 incl. new wire roundtrips, host 245 incl. e2e + forwarder downscale tests). - scripts/steamdeck/install.sh (§2b) + update.sh: build and install the scripting runner user-scoped (~/.local wrapper + pinned bun + bundle) — SteamOS's read-only /usr can't take the .deb layout, so the console's plugin store reported "the plugin runner isn't installed" on every SteamOS host. update.sh retrofits it onto existing installs. - plugins.rs runner discovery: check the ~/.local layout after the /usr ones; mention the SteamOS path in the not-installed error. - update.sh: define warn() — it was used but never defined, so under `set -e` the first warn aborted the update before services restarted. - pf-client-core gamepad: a Steam Input virtual pad forwarded on a real Deck (the only-pad case) now declares the DECK kind in its per-pad arrival instead of the wrapper's Xbox 360 identity — the session-level auto_pref already resolved SteamDeck, but the arrival overrides it on current hosts. - reject tests: cover SetupFailed; move the foreign-code probe off 0x68. fix(host/linux): survive and self-heal dead gamescope sessions on headless SteamOS boxes
Three fixes for the "most connects simply fail" trap on a SteamOS host with no physical display (VM testbox, panel-less mini PC): - restore path: skip the restore-to-physical-panel when no DRM connector reports a connected display — removing the headless drop-in and restarting gamescope-session.target on such a box just crash-loops gamescope and strands every later connect on "no usable compositor". Keep the headless session (and the takeover state) instead. - connect path: when no live graphical session exists but the MANAGED gamescope infra is present (SteamOS gamescope-session / Bazzite session-plus), route to the gamescope takeover — which rebuilds the session at the client's mode — instead of failing the connect. - error delivery: a session-setup failure used to just drop the QUIC connection, reaching the client as "control stream finished mid-frame" (indistinguishable from transport trouble). Close with a typed setup-failed code (0x68, RejectedSetupFailed = -29) carrying the error text, and give the client handshake/pairing error paths a short grace for the CONNECTION_CLOSE to beat the stream error it caused. The two-pair investigation (wired Mac clients stuck at a rock-steady ~18-19 ms "network" that survived the load ending and cleared only on reconnect) exposed two structural gaps, one of measurement and one of recovery: - Receipt was stamped at the hand-off PULL (Swift nextAU, pf-client-core, Android decode loops), not at reassembly completion — so any client-side standing state between the reassembler and the pull read as NETWORK latency, undiagnosable from the HUD. ABI v9: `PunktfunkFrame`/`Frame` grow `received_ns`, stamped by `Session::poll_frame` as the AU crosses the session boundary. Every embedder now uses the core stamp; the Apple client keeps the pull instant as `AccessUnit.pulledNs` and shows the receipt→pull wait as its own "client queue" term (detailed HUD tier from 2 ms + a `queue_p50` stats-log field). Decode stages keep their pull anchor on all platforms, so no historical stage shifts meaning. - The jump-to-live detectors deliberately ignore anything under 6 queued frames / 400 ms behind — so a small, constant, loss-free elevation (a sub-frame standing backlog, or a stale clock offset after a wall-clock step/slew) is carried for the rest of the session. New third detector (`StandingLatency`, unit-tested ladder): window-MIN one-way delay ≥ 10 ms above the session floor with zero loss for ~4.5 s escalates gently — a free clock re-sync first (an applied re-sync re-bases the floor), then at most 3 flush+keyframe bleeds sharing the jump-to-live cooldown, then a loud disarm naming what it means. Loss windows reset the run: congestion belongs to FEC/ABR, not this detector. Also: mid-stream re-sync apply/discard logs debug→info — they are the forensic trail for the stale-offset case and were invisible in the field. feat(client): device-pick plumbing — GPU enumeration + audio endpoint targeting
The Settings GPU pick existed (adapter → PUNKTFUNK_VK_ADAPTER) but no Linux shell could enumerate anything to pick: the GTK shell deliberately links no Vulkan. pf_presenter::vk::list_adapters() reads the physical devices' marketing names (no surface, discrete first, deduped — the name is the whole match key in pick_device), surfaced as `punktfunk-session --list-adapters`. Audio gets the same treatment for the new speaker_device/mic_device settings (PipeWire node.name; empty = default): session main maps them onto PUNKTFUNK_AUDIO_SINK/SOURCE — a hand-set env still wins, like the adapter — and the playback/mic streams pass them as `target.object` (raw key: the keys::TARGET_OBJECT constant is feature-gated on a newer libpipewire than we require). pf_client_core::audio::devices() is the registry roundtrip the pickers read, exposed for debugging as `punktfunk-session --list-audio`. POLL was dead: the local clipboard was re-read once per inbound event wait (<=120 ms) instead of on its own 400 ms cadence, so the constant documenting the interval described something the code did not do. Give it a deadline of its own -- the event wait is short because it bounds teardown latency, which is no reason to hammer the Win32 clipboard eight times a second while the user is copying in another app. Build State in one expression while here, and note for next time: CI runs clippy as --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, so a scoped run without -D warnings (what I did) does not reproduce it. The bridge landed always-on whenever the host permitted it; sharing a clipboard is a trust decision about a specific host, so it needs to be opted into. Mirrors the Apple client's per-host model (StoredHost.clipboardSync, "Share clipboard with this host") rather than a global switch: KnownHost::clipboard_sync, toggled from the host card's overflow menu, default off. The session binary resolves the stored flag itself in session_params, so a direct connect and the console's own launches honor the same decision without every caller having to remember to pass it. feat(client): shared clipboard on Windows
The protocol half has been in punktfunk-core since the clipboard work landed -- the per-session fetch task, plus clip_control/clip_offer/ clip_fetch/clip_serve/next_clip on NativeClient -- but only the Apple client ever drove it, through the C ABI. The Windows and Linux clients link the core directly and simply never wired it, so copy-paste between host and client worked on a Mac and nowhere else. This adds the missing half: the OS-clipboard bridge, on its own session thread beside the audio one. Local -> remote stays lazy by construction, as the design asks: a GetClipboardSequenceNumber poll spots a local copy and we announce only the FORMAT LIST; bytes are read when (and only when) the host actually pastes and sends a FetchRequest. Remote -> local is EAGER in this first cut, which is a deliberate deviation worth naming. macOS gets laziness free from NSPasteboardItemDataProvider; the Windows equivalent is delayed rendering, which needs a clipboard-owning window running its own message pump. So we fetch on the offer and place real bytes under a 4 MB cap -- text always crosses, a large image is skipped rather than pulled for a paste that may never come. Delayed rendering lifts the cap later. Echo suppression is the design's Windows rule verbatim (capture the sequence number right after our own SetClipboardData); without it every copy ping-pongs between the machines forever. Content marked ExcludeClipboardContentFromMonitorProcessing -- what password managers set -- is never announced and never served. Text and PNG for now. Apps that publish only CF_DIB need the conversion the host already has. Linux keeps a stub: the bridge itself is platform-neutral and will drive a data-control seam unchanged.
