Video datagrams are sealed at a shard payload sized for a clean 1500-byte MTU (1472-byte UDP payloads). A host whose route to the client crosses a smaller-MTU hop (a VPN/overlay adapter claiming the LAN route, a lowered NIC MTU) delivers every small flow — QUIC control, hole punch, input, audio — while 100% of video datagrams die: the client sits on a black screen reporting zero loss and the host streams into the void with every gauge green. Field-reported as 'connects fine, black screen forever'. Three legs, none of which changes a session on a healthy path: - PUNKTFUNK_WIRE_MTU operator override: shard payload derived from a given on-wire IP MTU. Wire-compatible — Welcome::shard_payload is already negotiated per session (the v4/v6 split ships two values today) and every client follows the negotiated value. - Detection: the QUIC MTU-discovery probe ceiling moves from quinn's stock 1452 to exactly the sealed video-datagram size (1472), so a control connection's settled MTU becomes a verdict on the path: settled at the ceiling proves it carries video, settled below proves it cannot. A per-session watcher samples after the search has settled (live-connection guard against mid-search false learns) and logs an actionable WARN naming the failure shape and the diagnosis commands. - Healing: the measured budget is recorded per peer IP; the next handshake clamps shard_payload to fit, so a reconnect self-heals. A later session that reaches the ceiling erases the record. Verified: core 286/286 --features quic + clippy -D warnings (macOS); host clippy -D warnings + native:: tests 44/44 (pf-lxcheck container). The regenerated C header picks up the new MIN_SHARD_PAYLOAD constant. |

fix(audio): budget the audio plane against the link, and close the review's gaps
Findings from the post-implementation review of design/audio-quality-and-latency.md. **The bandwidth gap (highest).** Tier `High` (256 kbps) and the redundant `0xD2` plane were added separately, each costed as "~1 % of the video budget", and nobody added them together: 256 kbps sent twice is 512 kbps — ~2.5 % of a 20 Mbps session but ~10 % of a 5 Mbps one. Audio rides QUIC datagrams, OUTSIDE the ABR loop, so ABR could neither see that nor reclaim it; a constrained link quietly handed a tenth of its bandwidth to audio while ABR carefully managed the rest. `plan_audio_budget` now makes tier and redundancy ONE decision against the session's resolved video bitrate, ordered by preference rather than cost — transparent audio beats redundant audio, since the field report was about quality and redundancy only pays under loss, so `High` alone outranks `Standard`+redundancy even though they cost the same. It can lower what the operator asked for, never raise it, and never goes below `Low`: a stream with unintelligible audio is worse than one spending a few percent more. **The Linux host kept the exact defect fixed on Windows.** `let _ = tx.try_send(samples)` — silent, uncounted data loss, where the encoder concatenates across the hole, so every drop is a click AND a permanent shift of everything after it. WP0.2 turned out to be Windows-only and had not said so. Linux now shares `capture_policy::CaptureStats`: drops counted and warned, plus per-window peak/RMS/delivered%. A Linux audio report was until now exactly as un-triageable as the Windows one was on 2026-08-03. **Apple's WP0.3 was half-done** — `bufferedMS` was added and wired to nothing. The drain thread now logs buffer/target/underruns/sheds like the other three, from one locked snapshot so the numbers in a line describe the same instant. Also: the Linux "audio format negotiated" line now says WHICH mode produced it, because that changes what it is worth — in stream-sink mode the host owns the sink so the mix cannot have been narrowed upstream, but in legacy monitor mode a 16 kHz Bluetooth sink would still be reported as a clean 48 kHz through PipeWire's resampler, the same way WASAPI's autoconvert hid it on Windows. Reading the monitored node's own rate needs a registry lookup this stream does not do; recorded as an open gap rather than implied to be covered. Two stale docs: `audio_wasapi.rs` cited `clients/windows/src/audio.rs` (deleted) and still described the pre-shared-policy "prime to ~3 quanta" behaviour. And the Apple ring's `prefill:` parameter, dead since the depth moved into the ring, is gone. Verified: clippy --all-targets -D warnings on Linux (docker) AND Windows (runner .133, forced clean rebuild of punktfunk-host + pf-client-core); core 167 tests; host 57 audio tests on Windows; Android clippy count identical to pristine (6, all documented arm64 artifacts); Apple ring re-simulated. The host suite's `gamestream::stream::tests::sender_delivers_batches` fails under qemu — the recorded environmental flake, unrelated to audio, green on the earlier less-loaded run. feat(host/audio): make audio observable, fix the endpoint choice, raise the encode quality
Phases 0-3 of design/audio-quality-and-latency.md, host side.
**WP2.1 — the 2026-08-03 root cause.** The client-only loopback preference took Steam's
Streaming *Microphone* render endpoint over real hardware unconditionally, because it is
silent on the host. But that endpoint exists to carry remote VOICE, and nothing checked
whether it could carry music: on the reporter's box it won all 31 loopback opens across 25
sessions while a clean AMD HD Audio endpoint sat idle, and the whole desktop mix went
through it before reaching Opus. A silent sink now has to EARN its preference — if its mix
format narrows the mix it drops below real hardware. It is still taken when nothing better
exists (narrow audio beats no audio), but flagged so the capture side says why.
`plan_with_formats` takes a probe rather than reading WASAPI, so all 26 wiring-plan tests
still run on every platform. An unknown format counts as fine, which is asserted:
`unknown_formats_reproduce_the_formatless_plan` proves a probe failure can never make the
plan worse than it was before formats existed.
**WP0.1 — log the endpoint's ACTUAL mix format.** Everything the old log printed ("48 kHz
f32 channels=2") was our REQUEST; with `autoconvert` WASAPI converts silently from whatever
the endpoint really runs. That is why a 3,600-line log filed over an audio-quality
complaint contained nothing that could diagnose it.
**WP0.2 — count what we drop.** The capture->encode handoff was a silent lossy `try_send`:
a stalled encode thread lost chunks, the encoder concatenated across the hole, and nothing
recorded it — a click plus a permanent shift of everything after. Now counted and warned,
alongside per-window peak/RMS/delivered% so a quiet host, a broken endpoint and a stream we
are damaging ourselves stop looking identical.
**WP2.4 — stop the default-device tug-of-war.** In Assert mode the capture is bound to the
planned endpoint EXPLICITLY, so a hijacked default changes only where apps render — the old
full reopen tore the capture down for nothing. The field log shows the cost: something
re-set the default every ~4 s and each round was a teardown, a wiring pass with
IPolicyConfig writes, and an audible dropout — seven in sixteen seconds, one ending in a
2 s error backoff. Now: put the default back, keep the stream, and after four rounds in
twenty seconds concede for a minute and say so once.
**WP1.1/1.2 — encode quality.** Constrained VBR (the hard-CBR comment justifies itself with
GameStream's audio FEC, which this plane does not have) and `AudioTier::High` by default:
stereo 128 -> 256 kbps, ~1 % of a 20 Mbps session. GameStream's encoder is deliberately
untouched — its FEC really does need fixed-size packets.
**WP3.1 — redundant `0xD2` plane**, sent when the client asked for it.
**WP2.2 — `audio.output_mode`** as a first-class setting (`client_only` / `host_and_client`
/ `follow_default`), superseding the two undocumented env vars, which stay honoured. The
enum lives in pf-host-config, which is deliberately dependency-free, so the tier table stays
in core where the codec knowledge is.
`capture_policy.rs` is split out for the same reason `wiring_plan.rs` is: both encode field
behaviour, so their tests must run on Linux CI, not only on a Windows box. That split
immediately earned itself — `capture_stats_separate_silence_from_signal` caught RMS being
divided by the FRAME count while summed over interleaved SAMPLES, which inflated it by
sqrt(channels) and made a sine report an RMS equal to its own peak.
WP4.5 (open the loopback at the minimum device period) is deliberately NOT done: in shared
mode `IAudioClient::Initialize` cannot change the engine period at all, so it would be a
no-op at best and a new failure path at worst. Recorded in the code. WP2.3 (force the parked
endpoint's volume) is deferred — `wasapi` keeps IMMDevice private, so it needs new raw COM
on a path this tree cannot compile, let alone test; its diagnostic half ships as the RMS
line above.
Verified: punktfunk-host + pf-host-config clippy --all-targets -D warnings and the audio
test suite under Linux/docker (gate proven non-vacuous with a planted type error); 26
wiring-plan tests standalone; fmt. The Windows-only halves of wasapi_cap.rs and
audio_control.rs are NOT compile-verified anywhere yet.

fix(host/abr): stop pinning Automatic sessions, and tell the client when the rate moves
Two host-side halves of the same sweep. **The cadence latch.** `cadence_degraded` — which makes the control task refuse bitrate CLIMBS — was latched true for as long as the session was escalated (adaptive capture depth or pipelined retrieve), independently of whether encode was still missing deadlines. The client cannot tell that refusal apart from an encoder's real ceiling: both arrive as a short `BitrateChanged`, and two identical ones latch a cap. Escalation needs ~20 net behind-frames, which a startup hitch supplies while the ABR is still in slow start at the 20 Mbps default — so one transient pinned the whole session there, long after the escalation had bought back the headroom it was for, and escaping cost +12.5 % per 60 s. An escalated session is still judged strictly (ANY net behind-frame keeps it flagged, where an unescalated one gets the full bucket), but being escalated no longer flags it by itself: escalating exists so cadence CAN be held, and once it is, refusing climbs refuses the thing that worked. The rule moves into `encode_behind_cadence` so it is stateable and testable. **The silent re-target.** `adopt_built_bitrate` publishes the rate a rebuilt pipeline actually opened at — `build_pipeline` re-resolves an Automatic rate whenever the source delivers a size the session did not negotiate, the mirrored-panel case — and the encoder's own clamp can land below what the control task already acked. Neither reached the client, whose controller keeps its own copy of that number as its climb base. A 1080p client mirroring a 4K panel therefore believed 20 Mbps while the host encoded 60, and its first climb computed from the stale base asked for 40: a re-target DOWNWARD, paying an encoder rebuild to get there. Both paths now push the applied rate to the control task, which sends `BitrateChanged` — the existing 9-byte message, which already means precisely this and which clients already handle arriving unprompted. No wire-format change, no capability negotiation, old clients unaffected. 2 host tests added. |

fix(host/input): rumble comes back when a controller does

Unplug a pad mid-session and plug it back in, and roughly half the time it never rumbles again for the rest of the session. The removal arm restarted the pad's rumble sequence counter. The client's reorder gate does not restart: `rumble_last_seq` lives for the whole QUIC connection and has no reset path, so it still holds whatever the pad reached before the unplug. Restarting the host counter therefore hands the client a seq it has already seen, and its wrapping half-space compare drops every envelope until the counter climbs back past the stored value — up to 128 sends. Since the counter only advances on a level change or a ~120 ms renewal while a level is non-zero, that spans many separate rumble events, so it reads as a flaky controller rather than a clean outage. Whether it bites is decided by how much the pad rumbled beforehand, which is why it looks intermittent: a pad that never rumbled before the re-plug has `None` on the client side and always heals. The counter now survives, matching the sibling pad-state gate — whose comment eleven lines above already explains that a re-plug must arrive with a still- newer seq to be accepted. The three clears that actually end the stale lease move into `clear_pad_feedback`, whose signature deliberately has no seq parameter so the arm cannot regress by editing. Covered by a regression test that drives the real wire encoder and the real client gate, and asserts the pre-fix behaviour is genuinely rejected across the whole forward window, so it cannot pass vacuously. Found by the 2026-08-03 force-feedback sweep (B1/T5 — see the backlog in punktfunk-planning design/haptics-sweep-2026-08-03.md). |

PUNKTFUNK_VDISPLAY_HZ_MULT promises extra display refreshes without one extra frame on the wire, but the frame-driven trigger enforced its pace only as a per-gap floor: sleep to 0.9×interval, then wake on arrival. A source that always has a frame pending — the overdriven display under uncapped content — settled at 0.9-interval spacing, 1.11× the negotiated rate. That is the field report's 132 fps on a 120 fps session: ten percent more bitrate, encode and decode for frames a 120 Hz panel can only drop. A credit bucket (PaceBudget) now pins the long-run average at the pacing rate: credit accrues at one frame per interval of real elapsed time, capped at 1.25 frames of post-stall burst, and every submitted frame spends one. A grab may run early only against banked credit, so the 0.9 floor keeps its per-gap jitter headroom while the average cannot exceed the rate — and a source at or below it banks faster than it spends and is never delayed. Anchoring to real elapsed time also keeps the synchronous-encode overlap the arrival-anchored floor bought (the owed fraction absorbs a constant encode tail instead of stacking on top of it), and it cannot fight the phase lock's submit grid: both agree the period is the interval. The charge lives under the same guard as the gate — the legacy fixed tick paces by its own grid, and charging it without ever accruing would bank unbounded debt that stalls the loop if a rebuild later flips the capturer to arrival-wait. Verified on .25: native::stream tests 15/15 (three new PaceBudget tests), punktfunk-host 369/369, clippy -D warnings clean, fmt clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(capture/kwin): a hidden cursor leaves the stream — KWin's id-0 meta is the hide
Since the 0.22.0 cursor work (the seat-pointer park + the metadata composite), a KWin capture-model stream always has a cursor — and it never went away again: not in game, not in Big Picture, not with a controller in hand (field report, 2026-08-01). The host blended the arrow forever because pf-capture deliberately ignores SPA_META_Cursor id 0, and once `visible` latched true nothing on Linux ever cleared it. Two producer contracts meet on id 0, and one flag now carries which one a stream follows. KWin rewrites the cursor meta on EVERY enqueued buffer and writes id 0 whenever Cursor::isOnOutput says the pointer is not in this stream — which covers both a globally hidden cursor and a client null-cursor surface (empty geometry intersects nothing). There id 0 IS the hide, and honoring it is what lets a game hide the pointer mid-stream. Mutter only rewrites a buffer's meta when the cursor changed, so recycled buffers carry stale id-0 regions between damage frames — honoring those flickered the cursor off between hovers (on-glass round 5), and that path keeps its last-known-state behavior. The flag rides from the backend that created the output (correct for registry-pooled reuse too — a kept display only ever matches its own backend) through capture_virtual_output into the parser's CursorState. The portal-monitor path stays on the stale-meta contract: the only thing routed through it today is Mutter's HDR mirror. Verified on .25: pf-capture 45/45, punktfunk-host 369/369, clippy -D warnings clean (pf-capture, punktfunk-host, cursor-probe), fmt clean. On-glass KDE validation still owed. fix(abr): probe throughput is measured over the client's receive interval
The capacity probe divided client-side bytes by the HOST's burst duration — a window wrong on both edges (base snapshotted before the burst reached the host, frozen only when the ProbeResult landed, while the host's clock stops the moment ITS send window closes, before the switch/kernel queue finishes draining toward the client). On a 1 GbE link a 2 Gbps burst target "measured" 1266 Mbps and set an 886 Mbps climb ceiling the link could never carry — permanent for the session, because set_ceiling never lowers. The reassembler now stamps probe-scoped counters (bytes, packets, first/last arrival, monotonic ns) at its FLAG_PROBE routing, so video around the burst contaminates neither numerator nor denominator; the throughput divisor is the client's first→last arrival interval, with the host duration kept as the fallback when fewer than two probe packets arrived. The user-facing speed test shares the corrected computation (ProbeOutcome/PunktfunkProbeResult layouts unchanged; elapsed_ms docs updated to the new semantics). Two guards ride along: - PUNKTFUNK_ABR_MAX_MBPS clamps inside set_ceiling — the one funnel every learned ceiling passes through — so a user cap binds no matter what any probe concludes. - The controller latches decode_cap_kbps when two CONSECUTIVE backoffs carry decode-severe evidence (deep decode excursion or jump-to-live flush) at a similar pre-backoff rate, mirroring host_cap_kbps for the client decoder: a knee below the link ceiling was a permanent 30-60 s sawtooth costing a flush + dropped-frame burst per cycle (1440p120 HEVC field case, knee ~490 Mbps). One spurious flush never latches; the cap re-probes on the CAP_REPROBE_WINDOWS clock, so it lifts when the decoder recovers. Also rights the three stale "3 Gbps" probe-clamp comments (the host constant has been 10 Gbps since MAX_PROBE_KBPS moved). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(host/handshake): the 4:4:4 gate names the encoder backend, not the capturer
capture_supports_444 was an encoder-backend fact (direct NVENC or PyroWave) logged under a capture-ish name — a field report burned real time hunting a capture problem because of it. The 'encode chroma' line now says ingest_chain_supports_444, a requested-but-declined session logs WHICH gate lost, and the console UI's Full chroma explainer names the real requirement. An HDR display cost you full chroma: the IDD-push capturer's only 10-bit
output was P010, so a session that negotiated 4:4:4 on an HDR desktop was
converted to 4:2:0 at capture time — *after* the Welcome had already told
the client 4:4:4. The client believed it (nothing on the wire contradicts
a Welcome), and the new chroma tag in the stats overlay is what finally
made the discrepancy visible.
Everything except the source was already in place, which is why this is
small: the NVENC config layer has stamped `FREXT` + `chromaFormatIDC=3` +
`pixelBitDepthMinus8=2` — HEVC Main 4:4:4 10 — with a unit test since the
4:4:4 work landed, `PixelFormat::Rgb10a2` already maps to `ABGR10` and
already counts as a full-chroma input, and the desktop client learned the
10-bit 4:4:4 Vulkan pool format in

The streamed-AU path only ever flushed a block when a full FEC block's worth of bytes accumulated - at real bitrates a frame finished encoding before that, so every AU degenerated to one tail-heavy send and the overlap the sentinel wire was built for never happened. Now a slice boundary flushes every whole shard (floored at MIN_STREAM_BLOCK_SHARDS so per-block parity stays economical), which means blocks are variable-size and can no longer be addressed by the uniform block_index * K_max formula. USER_FLAG_SLICE_STREAM marks such frames on every packet: sentinel blocks reuse frame_bytes as their shard-aligned base offset, the final block's base derives from the totals, and the receiver pins/validates positionally (sentinels must sit strictly below the final block's base; a mixed-flag or out-of-range header is dropped before it can place a byte). The AU's own flag bit gates the wire shape, and the host sets it only toward clients advertising STREAMED_AU + MULTI_SLICE, so shipped receivers keep seeing the byte-identical legacy sentinel (PUNKTFUNK_SLICE_STREAM=0 pins legacy for A/B). Both sides bound the per-frame block count by the same floored formula, and the flush loop cuts as many blocks as a chunk completes - a slice bigger than one FEC block can't leave an oversized final block behind. Midday on-glass falsified v2's remaining assumptions: a per-frame additive hold SATURATES the arrival-slaved loop once hold + work >= interval — submits free-run at their own cadence and the commanded phase dissolves (measured: +-2 ms hold steps, zero client response) — and the latch statistic hovers at the target's ANTIPODE, where shortest-way errors sign-flip on noise (the 0<->2<->4 ms offset chatter). v3, one change per falsified assumption: - ACTUATOR: submits lock to an absolute grid (epoch + k x period + offset); the controller walks only the offset. A periodic grid cannot free-run — occupancy is one frame per period whatever the offset — so phase actuation is linear BY CONSTRUCTION. Disengaged = no grid sleeps = zero cost; every failure path DISENGAGES (never parks: v2's e2e-tax lesson). - SENSOR: the client reports the circular mean + coherence of the ARRIVAL lead (per-AU reassembly stamps vs the panel latch grid) — the phase the host actually controls; latch measured downstream of the decoder pipeline, which absorbed the actuation. pf.phase logs "arrival lead circ= coh=". - ANTIPODE DAMPING: errors within 1 ms of +-period/2 take half-steps until they commit to a side. Harness rewritten around plants glass validated: a GRID plant (linear by construction), the DECOUPLED plant (v2's saturation — must disengage, not orbit or park), an antipode start (must converge within one period of travel), incoherence (never engages), a regime change (re-engages after backoff), and the actuator's own periodicity/offset-linearity. Also fixes the harness's SIM_TARGET (a mis-derived max asserted 3.5 ms where the controller's actual target is 2.5 — the controller was right, the ruler was wrong; the Python cross-check inherited the same constant, a lesson in replicating the CODE, not the author's belief about it). Gates: v3 simulations 6/6; host bin suite 345/1 (the documented environmental qemu UDP test); clippy --all-targets -D warnings clean; cargo ndk arm64 check clean. The controller iterated twice on the user's gaming PC before this existed; never again. punktfunk_core::phase::circular_latch is extracted from the Android presenter (shared: iOS reports next, and the harness generates its synthetic reports through the IDENTICAL statistic the clients ship), with unit tests including the wrap-straddling cluster an arithmetic mean gets maximally wrong. The stream.rs harness models the plant — latch = (base − hold + noise) mod P, deterministic LCG noise — and drives PhaseController::adjust through five regimes: - tight jitter locks into the deadband within ~5 adjusts and stops moving; - a wrap-side start takes the SHORTEST way (travel < P/2 asserted); - an incoherent phase never steps (zero hold, ever); - a v1 pinned-median report trips the travel budget and DECAYS TO ZERO — the 2026-07-31 orbit and the parked-hold e2e tax, both as asserts; - a post-decay regime tightening re-locks. Gates: host bin suite 344 passed / 1 failed = the documented environmental qemu UDP-loopback test (clean main fails identically in this container); core phase tests 4/4; clippy --all-targets -D warnings clean. Round-1 on-glass falsified two v1 assumptions in one morning (NP3 ↔ .173): - A median lead is immovable under period-spanning jitter (uniform mod P), so v1 orbited the period at 2 ms/s forever — and the dead-signal freeze hotfix never armed, because ±1.5 ms of window sampling noise kept resetting its 'error responded' check. Thresholds can't referee noise. - A HELD hold is not free: it delays sampling after the capture stamp, taxing e2e by up to a period (user-measured: ~+4 ms during the orbit). The correct failure response is DECAY TO ZERO, never freeze-in-place. v2, all three layers: - Wire: PhaseReport grows a length-discriminated coherence tail (27-byte form; the u16::MAX sentinel encodes as the byte-identical 25-byte v1 — strict-prefix discipline, both forms pinned by tests). - Client: the reporter sends the CIRCULAR vector-mean latch phase mod the panel period + its coherence (‰); pf.present logs circ=/coh=. - Host: steps only while coherent (floor 300‰; a v1 report bypasses the gate), along the signed SHORTEST way around the period, under a cumulative 1.25-period travel budget that is noise-immune by construction (it integrates applied steps, not reported errors); incoherence or budget exhaustion decays the hold to zero and re-arms once flat. Deadband convergence resets the budget — tight regimes lock exactly as designed. report_phase + the C ABI mirror gain the coherence parameter (canary-only ABI, hours old, sole caller in-tree). Gates: docker amd64 clippy --all-targets -D warnings (host+core, nvenc) clean; core suite 244/244; cargo ndk arm64 check clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(host/phase-lock): a dead error signal freezes the hold instead of orbiting the period
First on-glass closed-loop run (NP3 ↔ .173, canary 0.23.10498) proved the transport and both endpoints work — and exposed the controller chasing a statistic that cannot respond: under period-spanning arrival jitter the client's latch DISTRIBUTION is ~uniform mod the refresh, so shifting its mean (the hold — provably reaching the client: the paced-drop bursts locked to each wrap) cannot move its MEDIAN. The controller stepped +2 ms/s in one direction forever, wrapping the period every ~4 s, and every wrap coalesced ~30 frames at the client — a periodic hiccup that must not ship. The controller now remembers its last error: three consecutive steps that fail to move it ≥1.5 ms freeze the hold (kept, not zeroed) and log; a later report whose error moved re-arms stepping — a tight-jitter regime still locks exactly as designed. Controller v2 (a circular phase statistic with a coherence gate, per the design doc's follow-ups) replaces the median outright; this freeze stays as its safety net. The host's capture tick and a client's panel vsync are independent ~120 Hz oscillators; their drifting phase sweeps every frame's wait-for-latch across a full refresh period (measured on-glass: latch p50 oscillating 5.4-8.9 ms with a fixed margin) — the beat is the residual judder and the fat p95, and no client can fix it alone. Design: punktfunk-planning design/phase-locked-capture.md. Protocol (punktfunk-core): - PhaseReport (control 0x32, next to the clock family): the client's next display latch ALREADY CONVERTED to host clock (the skew offset lives only client-side), panel period, uncertainty, and the measured median arrival-lead — the controller's error signal. ~1 Hz, latest-wins. CLIENT_CAP_PHASE_LOCK advertises it; CtrlRequest::Phase + report_phase() + the C ABI mirror carry it. - The 0xCF host-timing tail grows a phase ACK (applied_phase_ns, 29-byte form) under the same strict-prefix append discipline — old readers parse the shorter forms; degradation pinned by tests. Host engine (arrival-slaved loop — no backend can move the source vsync, per the tick-ownership audit in the design doc): - PhaseCtl bridges control task → encode loop (the fec_target pattern, multi-field). PhaseController walks a per-frame HOLD before submit toward the client's reported lead hitting target = max(2.5 ms, uncertainty+1ms): 1 Hz adjust, 2 ms max step, 300 µs deadband, period-wrapping (the newest-wins capture slot makes a wrapped hold sample fresher content, not staler). A loop local, so every mid-stream rebuild keeps the lock; a new session re-acquires. PUNKTFUNK_PHASE_LOCK=0 disarms. Android reporter: the presenter's 1 Hz pf.present flush returns the window's measured latch p50; the async loop converts the vsync clock's next timeline monotonic→realtime→host and reports. Inert toward old hosts. Gates: docker amd64 clippy --all-targets -D warnings (host+core, nvenc) clean; core suite incl. the new wire tests; cargo ndk arm64 check/clippy clean. On-glass A/B vs the .173 host owed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

The capture-latched client (console.rs latched_mouse) never advertises CLIENT_CAP_CURSOR, so its session resolved cursor_blend=false and asked Mutter to EMBED the pointer. On a Mutter virtual stream that is a fiction: since Mutter 48 (7ff5334a, hw-cursor inhibition removed) the software cursor overlay is suppressed stage-globally whenever any physical head realizes a HW cursor — dmabuf-recorded frames blit the view without a pointer, and cursor-only motion schedules no re-record either (mutter#4939). Probed on-glass on Mutter 50.3: embedded + relative motion = frozen frame counter; SPA_META_Cursor positions kept flowing in the same setup. So the no-channel session now takes the path that was verified end to end: cursor-as-metadata + the host composites, permanently — the same arm a channel session lands in after its capture-model flip. Embedded remains only the can't-blend fallback (libav VAAPI/NVENC, software). - session_plan::cursor_blend_for grows the no-channel arm (codec + depth in, the same CUDA-payload prediction handshake makes); gamescope excluded so patch-2+ keeps its native-NV12 zero-copy shape - the encode loop's composite refresh + one-shot breadcrumbs now cover the no-channel session; the park schedule keeps retrying while its composite is starved (relative-only clients cannot park themselves) - the compositor retarget re-applies set_hw_cursor — the rebuilt display used to come up EMBEDDED even for channel sessions - the GameStream virtual source takes the same rule (it never has a channel); its stream_body blend flag mirrors the request - punktfunk-probe grows --cursor-nochannel (the latched-capture client, headless); cursor-probe grows --dump (PPM frames + a content-change counter, the pixel evidence the embedded A/B lacked) Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(core): every connect introduces the device by name
The wire always had Hello.name and the host always honored it - but the connect path hardcoded None (only the PIN-pairing ceremony sent a name), so every no-PIN "request access" knock surfaced as the fingerprint placeholder "device abcd1234", and approving one without retyping a name persisted that placeholder into the trust store forever. NativeClient::connect now takes the device name. The session workers and the probe connects pass trust::device_name() (the hostname), the C ABI defaults to the same without a signature change (an ex10 variant can make it explicit if an embedder wants a custom label), and Android threads Build.MODEL through nativeConnect - the same convention its pairing dialogs already use for nativePair. The host, in turn, resolves the streaming client's display name (trust store first, so an approval-time rename wins; else the sanitized Hello name) and exposes it as client_name in GET /api/v1/local/summary for the tray's connect toast - a deliberate, documented loosening of that route's "no device names" contract, in the local user's favor: it tells them who is on their machine. A paired-but-idle device's name still never appears, which the mgmt tests now pin explicitly. openapi.json, its docs-site copy, and the SDK bindings regenerate. fix(host/linux): park the seat pointer on the streamed surface — a capture-mode client cannot
ROOT CAUSE of the GNOME capture-mode cursorless stream (and the same latent hole on KWin, whose screencast also gates cursor data on includesCursor): a virtual output is created fresh per session while the seat pointer stays wherever it was — usually a physical monitor. A capture-model (pointer-lock) client sends only RELATIVE deltas, so nothing ever moves the pointer INTO the streamed output: input lands on the wrong monitor, Mutter suppresses SPA_META_Cursor entirely (should_cursor_metadata_be_set: visible AND in-stream), and both the embedded and the encoder-blend composite models stream cursorless. The stream loop now parks the pointer at the streamed surface's centre through the session's own input pipeline (capability routing, region ladder, anchor — the path client events take): armed per (re)built display and by the capture-model flip, retried on a schedule because the first park of a session can land on a still-cold EIS connection (devices not resumed — the injector drops it; observed on-glass), and kept trying while a capture-model session still has no live overlay. A desktop-model client overrides the park with its first absolute move. Verified end-to-end on GNOME 50.3/Mutter (RTX 5070 Ti): the reference client in capture mode now shows the host-composited cursor moving in the decoded H.265 dump, and the PyroWave session hands the overlay to the wavelet CSC blend. One-shot per-session/per-stream breadcrumbs (first meta region, first bitmap, first overlay handed to the blend / still-cursorless) make the next field triage a grep instead of a rebuild. `build_pipeline` opens the encoder at the DELIVERED frame size but was handed a bitrate resolved from the NEGOTIATED mode. Those agree for a virtual display, which is created at the mode that was asked for. They do not agree for a monitor mirror: `MirrorDisplay::create` ignores the requested mode by design (a physical head runs at the mode its owner set), so a client asking for 1080p and mirroring a 4K panel encoded four times the pixels at the 1080p rate — a quarter of the bits per pixel the codec was sized for, which arrives as a soft, stuttering picture rather than as the mismatch it actually is. This is the reported "laggy mirror". Re-resolve for what will really be encoded, and thread the applied rate back out so the session adopts it: `bitrate_kbps` is what the ABR controller climbs from, what the console samples, and what a `SetBitrate` ack is measured against, so letting it disagree with the live encoder makes each of those reason about a stream that does not exist. The mid-stream rebuild paths (mode switch, compositor switch, capture-loss) adopt it too — each can land on a different source than it left. Automatic only. An explicit client rate is the operator's statement about their own link and is never second-guessed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Phase 7's contained half. 7.1's writer split and 7.3's reservation are NOT here — see the plan; both need more than a local edit. **Lock-order inversion, gamescope.** `create_managed_session_steamos` held MANAGED_SESSION while taking STEAMOS_TOOK_OVER (and `persist_takeover`'s locks), while `do_restore_tv_session` takes STEAMOS_TOOK_OVER first and MANAGED_SESSION second — AB/BA between a connect and the restore worker, which genuinely run concurrently (`vd.create` runs off the registry lock; the worker is its own thread). The connect path now drops its guard before the pair and re-acquires after `poll_managed_node`, the shape `create_managed_session` already used. And `takeover_live` held all four statics at once — in a `||` chain every `.lock()` temporary lives to the end of the statement — for four reads; scoped bindings drop each guard before the next, taking it out of the ordering graph entirely. **`observe_session_instance` decided and acted under one lock.** It held LAST_INSTANCE across `invalidate_backend` (which drops keep-alive displays through the registry lock) and a `systemctl` shell-out on a 10 s budget, from three call sites including a per-second watcher. It decides under the lock and acts outside now; the baseline is advanced inside it, so a concurrent observer cannot run the action twice. **`admit` held the live-session table across the budget checks** — `manager::snapshot()` blocks on the manager `state` lock, which is itself held across DDC round trips and three 3 s activation ladders. Every connect, disconnect and mgmt read queued behind one slow display operation. The guard is scoped to `decide` alone. **GameStream never registered**, so its display was invisible to both Windows budgets (they gate on `!live.is_empty()`) and a native connect could be admitted past capacity the box had already spent. It registers now, anonymously, for the session's lifetime. **`ensure_exclusive_watch` panicked on a failed thread spawn** while holding BOTH `exclusive_watch` and (via its caller) `state` — poisoning the two locks the whole manager runs on, so every later acquire and mgmt read would panic on `.lock().unwrap()`. It logs and degrades instead: no re-assert watchdog is a degradation, a wedged manager is not. Also fixes two things only a Windows build shows, both mine: Phase 2.3 left `gamescope_route` unused there (every reader is Linux-gated), which `-D warnings` in Windows CI would have rejected — I had only run the host clippy on Linux. And Phase 5.4's helper-safening reaches a FOURTH crate, pf-inject, which xcheck does not lint. Verified on .173: `cargo clippy -p punktfunk-host -p pf-vdisplay --all-targets` clean across the whole tree; local fmt, both xcheck targets and 53 tests green. fix(vdisplay): the gamescope sub-mode is a per-session value, not a process-global env write
Completes what the env-lock fix started. `apply_input_env` published its decision into
PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_NODE/_SESSION and `GamescopeDisplay::create` read it back out —
with the lock released in between, and with the GameStream plane, the mid-stream
switch watcher and the capture-loss rebuild all re-running the writer. So session B's
routing decision could retarget session A's `create`: A asks for a bare spawn, B
connects, A attaches to B's session instead.
The decision now travels as a `GamescopeRoute` return value and is carried on the
backend INSTANCE via `set_gamescope_route` — the discipline `set_launch_command`
already documents two lines above it ("Carried on the backend instance — NOT a
process-global env var — so concurrent sessions can't stomp each other's launch
target"). Nothing writes the two keys any more; they are read once, as operator
overrides, and `create`/`poolable_now`/`launch_is_nested` all answer from the
session's own route.
The route carries its payload rather than just the verdict, so the managed session
flavour and the attach node id stop being separate env reads too.
Threaded through both planes: handshake -> SessionContext -> `vd`, and the GameStream
`open_source` -> `run`. Three re-resolution points needed the same treatment and each
would have silently downgraded a session to a bare spawn without it — the switch
watcher's rebuilt backend, the capture-loss rebuild (which can swap the whole
instance), and the operator-pinned path, which deliberately skips the input-backend
write but still needs a route. That last one is why the ladder is split out as
`resolve_gamescope_route`: a `PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR` pin must not silently mean "bare
spawn" on a box pinned to the managed session.
`#[must_use]` on both entry points found the capture-loss site, which I had missed.
Verified on 192.168.1.21: whole workspace `cargo check -p punktfunk-host`, clippy
--all-targets clean over the host and pf-vdisplay, 100 pf-vdisplay tests, and the live
GNOME create/drop still green. Windows + Linux xcheck clean on the Mac.

feat(host): run the virtual display faster than the stream needs
PUNKTFUNK_VDISPLAY_HZ_MULT runs the virtual display at a multiple of the session's rate without putting one extra frame on the wire. A compositor paints on its own vblank, so a frame finished just after the capture sampled waits nearly a full interval to be picked up — the jittery part of the latency budget, not the steady part; at 2 that worst case halves. It costs the compositor and GPU the extra composites, so it stays opt-in at 1. The pacing rate was previously just "whatever the backend achieved". It is now the session's rate floored by the achieved one — the same value as before whenever the knob is unset, and the only correct answer when it is set: never above what the client negotiated, never above what the display actually produces. Both build sites get it, the initial build and the in-place resize, so a mid-stream resize can't silently drop back to 1x. A backend that won't give the multiplied rate now says so at info rather than warn, since that is the expected outcome of an opt-in knob; falling short of the SESSION's own rate still warns, because that one costs the client frames. feat(gamescope): put the cursor in the node, so a session can be zero-copy
gamescope keeps the pointer out of its PipeWire node — it lives on a hardware plane for scanout, and `paint_pipewire()` composites a separate, reduced frame that never includes it. So punktfunk has always reconstructed it from XFixes and blended it in host-side. That blend is what has been blocking the zero-CSC encode path, and the cost is larger than it sounds: `VulkanVideoEncoder::open` refuses the RGB-direct (EFC) source for any session with `cursor_blend`, because that front end is fixed-function and has no blend stage. `cursor_blend_for` sets it unconditionally for gamescope. Net effect: a gamescope session paid a full-frame colour-conversion pass per frame, forever, for a pointer. So put the cursor where it belongs. A second carried gamescope patch adds `--pipewire-composite-cursor` (off by default — the node has never carried it, and a consumer that draws its own would get two), painting it with the same `MouseCursor::paint` call the scanout composite uses. It scales for free: paint_pipewire has already set `currentOutputWidth/Height` to the capture size, which is what that function scales against. The repaint test grows the cursor's state beside the commit ids — a pointer-only move produces no commit, so without it the composited cursor would freeze on a static screen while the real one moved, and a cursor that became hidden would never be erased. Host side, the `+pfhdr` marker becomes a monotonic PATCH LEVEL, so one probe answers every capability the session must know before it is planned (level 1 = HDR formats, level 2 = the cursor flag). `cursor_blend_for` and the `gamescope_cursor` resolver both consult it through one helper, because they have to agree: the reader without the blend is a wasted X11 connection, the blend without the reader is a stream with no pointer, and both together with a gamescope that paints its own would draw two. ⚠ The two indirect spawn modes carry the flag through `PF_HDR_ARGS`, so this shares a dependency with the HDR flags: a session that ignores `GAMESCOPE_BIN`/`PATH` and execs the distro's gamescope gets neither. HDR fails loudly there (negotiation timeout + SDR latch); a missing cursor would be silent. Noted in packaging/gamescope/README.md as worth a post-spawn `/proc/<pid>/cmdline` check if it ever bites. |

feat(hdr): a gamescope session streams true HDR10, decided before the Welcome
The Linux native plane has been 8-bit for a reason that stopped being true: `capturer_supports_hdr()` returned a flat `false` because Mutter's virtual monitors are SDR-only upstream. That is still right for Mutter, KWin and wlroots — and wrong for gamescope, whose node can now offer 10-bit BT.2020 PQ (packaging/gamescope). Open the three gates that held it off, together: * the capture-side gate becomes SOURCE-AWARE (`capturer_supports_hdr_for`): Windows keeps its platform answer, gamescope asks whether the resolved binary offers the formats, everything else stays false. It must be truthful rather than optimistic — the Welcome is irrevocable, and PQ frames on an 8-bit encoder are a deliberate hard error — so every term is a static fact resolved before anything is spawned, including "do we spawn gamescope at all" (an attach inherits someone else's flags and can promise nothing); * `want_hdr` reaches the capturer: `open_virtual_output` grew the parameter it never had, and the host arm stopped dropping `want.hdr` on the floor; * the spawn gains `--hdr-enabled --hdr-debug-force-support` on all three sub-modes (bare args, the `GAMESCOPE_BIN` wrapper, the SteamOS PATH shim), from one shared `hdr_args` — the force flag is what makes it work headless, and forgetting it looks exactly like a negotiation failure. Two things that would have gone wrong quietly: * the keep-alive reuse key gains `hdr`. gamescope cannot turn HDR on live, so a kept SDR display handed to an HDR session would give the game no HDR surfaces while the stream negotiated PQ over an SDR composite — wrong, and not obviously broken. Same for the managed session-plus/SteamOS reuse check. * the HDR-negotiation-failure latch becomes PER SOURCE. It was one process-wide flag, so a monitor that left HDR mode would have disabled gamescope HDR until the host restarted, and vice versa — two facts with nothing in common but the word HDR. GameStream follows the same shape: `host_hdr_capable` gains the gamescope arm, and the RTSP gate's live BT.2100 monitor probe is scoped to the portal source — a headless box has no monitor to be in HDR mode, so running it there would hard-refuse every gamescope HDR session. Off by default for one release (`PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR=1`), and `punktfunk-host hdr-probe` now answers for both Linux HDR sources. |

fix(native): a mirrored monitor has a fixed mode — refuse to resize it
A physical head runs at the mode its owner set, and MirrorDisplay::create ignores the requested one on purpose. So a mid-stream Reconfigure against a mirror could only ever tear the cast down and rebuild the identical one at the identical size — a hitch that buys nothing, and an invitation to the worse reflex of reconfiguring the display someone is sitting at. reconfig_allowed grows a third gate beside gamescope and per-client-mode identity, and the session captures it at bring-up like the others: this session opened its display under whatever the pin said then, so a console change mid-session must not retroactively change the answer it gives. Linux-only, because vdisplay::open only routes to the mirror there — a pin left in a Windows host's settings streams nothing different and must not disable resize as a side effect. design/per-monitor-portal-capture.md §7.3, open item 4. docs(host/stats): say what the stats actually measure — three field-triage traps
Three lines that each sent the 2026-07 PyroWave field triage down a wrong path, made honest: - The 'client accepts streamed AUs … will stream per-slice' log fires before the encoder exists and regardless of backend support (only Linux direct-NVENC implements chunked polling) — it now states the client capability only. - StatsSample::mbps was documented as 'transmit goodput'; it is attempted sealed wire bytes at seal time — AU bytes + shard framing + FEC parity (+ PyroWave window padding), not reduced by socket send drops. - The per-stage split's 'encode' stage is the poll() duration, which is ~0 by construction for synchronous backends (PyroWave encodes inside submit → its time shows as 'submit') — documented at the split's definition so 'encode 0.00' stops reading as an instrumentation hole. feat(session/gamestream): the compat plane learns a game's lifetime too
Moonlight sessions had neither direction of the session⇄game binding: a game exiting left the player looking at a desktop, and a session ending never touched the game. The machinery for both landed with the native plane; this wires it up. The compat plane had no way to say "this is over" — RTSP carries no close code — so `/cancel`, the management stop and a game exiting all looked exactly like a client vanishing. They now set a session quit flag, which is what lets the virtual display skip its keep-alive linger for a real stop and what the end-game-on-session-end policy reads to tell a decision from a network blip. A drop still lingers, and still gets its reconnect window. Moonlight can't resume a session, so a client coming back for a game it left behind does it by launching the title again — that reclaims the waiting game before anything starts, rather than letting the old window close on the copy the player is now holding. Both planes now resolve a launch through one lookup (`resolve_launch`), so a GameStream title arrives with the same identity and the same detect signals a native one does; `resolve_session_launch`/`launch_command` were the older, identity-less half of that and are gone. A Moonlight game also has no live-session entry to hang off, so the status surface gains a slot for it — without it the Dashboard would show a stream with no game while one was running. Gates on .21: check + clippy --all-targets clean, 296 tests (293 + 3), fmt CI-parity. |

feat(session): end-game/end-session lifetime on Windows
Phase 2. The lease, the settings, the events and the status surface were already platform-neutral; what Windows lacked was a way to see processes and a way to ask one to close. `procscan` splits per-OS behind one contract. The Windows matcher is a Toolhelp snapshot plus each process's full image path (`QueryFullProcessImageNameW`), with creation times from `GetProcessTimes` enforcing the two rules the module exists for: never adopt a process that predates the launch, never trust a bare pid. Both matter more here than on Linux — the host is SYSTEM, so it can see and signal everything, and Windows recycles pids briskly. Path matching is case-insensitive and separator-aware, and normalizes the `\\?\` prefix `canonicalize` adds, without which a store-derived path would never compare equal to a live image path. There is no reaper argv and no readable environment on Windows, so a spec carrying only a Steam appid or an env marker matches nothing rather than falling through to an empty predicate. Steam's appid instead feeds a **veto**: its per-app `Running` flag in the user's hive can't be trusted to say a game IS running (Steam sets it around updates too, and leaves it stale after a crash), but it is exactly right for refusing to declare one gone. If the matcher can't see a game whose exe sits outside its manifest's install dir, ending the session would be a false positive the player feels immediately; honoring the veto only ever leaves a stream up. Termination asks before it insists, which on Windows needs a detail that fails silently if missed: `EnumWindows` only sees the calling thread's desktop, and the host's is session 0, which holds none of the user's windows. So the terminating thread binds to the input desktop first (the pattern `pf-inject`'s `sendinput.rs` uses), posts `WM_CLOSE` to the game's visible top-level windows, waits, and only then calls `TerminateProcess` on freshly re-verified pids. Without the desktop bind the polite pass finds nothing and every game dies unsaved. Job Objects, planned as WP2.3, are deferred with the reasoning in the design doc: every Windows launch either hands off through a launcher or the shell — where a job would wrap a shim that exits immediately — or is a direct exe whose path we already know, and wiring one in would touch the `CreateProcessAsUserW` token path the UAC and secure-desktop work depends on. Also: the watcher's steady-state poll now re-verifies known pids and only re-scans the whole table once they all vanish (which still catches a game that re-execs). On Windows a full scan is an `OpenProcess` per process on the box, so this is the difference between a negligible and a noticeable poll. Gates: Linux .21 check/clippy/fmt/293 tests green; Windows .133 check + clippy --all-targets clean, and the 4 procscan tests pass — including the live one that finds the test process in the real process table and rejects a wrong creation time. On-glass Windows (Steam/Epic/GOG/Xbox titles, the unsaved-progress check) still owed; it needs a box with games on it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(session): bind a session's life to its game's, in both directions (Linux)
Two of the most-asked-for behaviors, and until now the host could only manage a
sliver of one of them: end the streaming session when the launched game exits,
and — when the operator asks — end the game when the session ends.
Ending the session on game exit already worked, but only for a Steam title under
a bare-spawn gamescope. Everywhere else the host spawned a launch and forgot it:
the pid was logged and dropped, so on KWin, Mutter, wlroots or gamescope-attach a
finished game left the client staring at a desktop. Ending a game was not
possible at all — there was no primitive for it.
The missing piece was never plumbing, it was knowledge: a launch says what to
run, not what the game looks like once a launcher has handed off. So each store
now also reports how to recognize its game (DetectSpec, previous commit's
subject matter, folded in here), procscan turns that into live pids on Linux, and
gamelease turns pids into a lifetime — with four kinds covering how the game got
started:
nested gamescope owns it; its display teardown ends the game
child the host spawned it, in its own process group
matched a launcher owns it; recognized by its store's signals
untracked nothing identifies it — both behaviors stay off, and the host
says so once rather than guessing
A child that exits successfully within 5s was a launcher handing off, not the
game: the lease re-resolves to matched (or to untracked) instead of reporting an
exit. That single rule is what keeps steam://, epic:// and playnite:// launches
from ending a session the moment they start.
Ending a game is destructive, so three rules bound it. It is opt-in
(game_on_session_end defaults to keep). A drop is not a decision — `always`
waits out a reconnect window (5 min) that a returning client cancels by
reclaiming its own game, matched on fingerprint and title. And only ever this
session's game: a pid is adopted only if it started after the launch, so a copy
the player already had open is never touched, and every pid is re-verified
against its start time immediately before being signalled, so a recycled pid
never is. Termination asks first (SIGTERM to the group, 10s) and only then
insists.
Also here, because they are the same decision seen from other angles:
- A management stop is now a deliberate stop. `DELETE /session` sets quit before
stop, so it behaves like a client pressing Stop — the display skips its
keep-alive linger instead of lingering for a session nobody is coming back to.
- `/status` reports what is running (games[]), including a game whose session has
gone and which is waiting out its window, so the console can show it and offer
`POST /game/end`.
- New game.running / game.exited events, filterable like every other kind, which
is the whole polling loop of the community plugin this replaces.
- session_status::register takes a named struct: eleven positional arguments,
half of them same-typed Arc<Atomic…>, is a transposition waiting to happen.
Gates on Linux (.21): check, clippy --all-targets, fmt, and 291 tests green.
Windows (Job Objects, Toolhelp matching) and the GameStream plane are phases 2
and 3; both are inert here, as is macOS, which has no launch path at all.

The CCD isolate verifies "sole active desktop" at commit time and is never checked again. On a hybrid Intel+NVIDIA box the internal panel is re-activated moments later (the isolated topology is deliberately not saved to the CCD database so teardown can restore the user's layout, and the post-isolate resize/HDR churn — or the panel's own driver, or display-poller software — re-resolves back to the stored layout). Proven on-glass: seconds after the verify, CCD showed the panel ACTIVE beside the virtual display while the host still believed it was exclusive — cursor and windows can land off-stream, and the lock screen can land on the physical panel. A group-scoped watchdog now re-queries every PUNKTFUNK_EXCLUSIVE_REASSERT_MS (default 2 s, 0 disables) while an EXCLUSIVE isolate is live and re-issues the isolate when a non-managed display crept back, logging who-is-fighting escalation (3×WARN → 1×ERROR → DEBUG). Gated on a new GroupState.ccd_exclusive flag so a Primary group's deliberately-lit panels are never "fixed". Cycles take the state lock via try_lock with a sliced sleep, so teardown's stop+join under the state lock cannot deadlock and is bounded by ~250 ms. fix(encode/windows): a stale PUNKTFUNK_ENCODER pin no longer wedges a conflicting GPU selection
On a hybrid box, picking a GPU in the web console whose vendor contradicts a host.env PUNKTFUNK_ENCODER pin produced an unrecoverable session: the pin won backend selection while the adapter followed the console, the wrong-vendor encoder failed deterministically at submit, the reset ladder burned its 5 in-place rebuilds on it, and the client reconnected into the identical wall forever (~10 s per cycle, no visible reason). Three legs: - windows_resolved_backend() now reconciles: a hardware pin whose vendor contradicts the selected GPU is overridden by the adapter-derived backend (capture + encode share one adapter, so honoring the pin can only fail); open_video warns loudly when a pin loses. The reconciliation is a pure, unit-tested table (resolve_windows_backend). - the QSV wrong-adapter bind is typed TerminalEncoderError, and the stream loop's reset ladder ends the session immediately on it instead of feeding a deterministic config error 5 futile rebuilds. - the un-pinned path was already correct (verified on-glass: NVIDIA preference + no pin = stable AV1 10-bit HDR on NVENC), so the override simply takes the conflict case onto that path. fix(gamestream): the HDR SDR-downgrade latch gated the capture offer but not the negotiation (X6)
`pf_capture::hdr_capture_failed()` had exactly one consumer: `open_portal_monitor`, which uses it to drop the HDR offer (`want_hdr && !hdr_capture_failed()`). The RTSP negotiation consulted only `gnome_hdr_monitor_active()`. So once the latch was set — an HDR negotiation timed out, the monitor left HDR mode between probe and negotiation, NVIDIA EGL not listing LINEAR for XR30, a pre-50 Mutter — the host kept telling the client HDR while capturing and encoding SDR: `cfg.hdr` flowed to `open_portal_monitor`, which then silently opened the SDR offer. The client renders an SDR stream as PQ. Washed out, wrong gamut, and no error anywhere. The latch is sticky until host restart, so every reconnect repeated it. Consulted at RTSP honor time rather than folded into `host_hdr_capable()` for the same reason as the colour-mode probe next to it: that fn is the STATIC serverinfo capability (it decides whether to advertise SCM_HEVC_MAIN10 at all), and this is a live per-session fact. The native plane needs no equivalent — `capturer_supports_hdr()` is hard-false on Linux, and the latch is a fact about the portal capturer, which that plane never uses. Noted in handshake.rs so it isn't re-derived. Listed in the sweep's confirmed-defect register as cross-cutting/medium, then absent from every phase of its implementation plan. Verification is on-glass (force the latch, reconnect a client that requests HDR, confirm the Welcome/SDP reports SDR). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Upstream landed `fc335b39` (negotiate the cursor around what the encoder can blend) on the same files this sweep restructured. Merged rather than rebased: the sweep MOVED ~2,000 lines out of `linux/mod.rs` into `pipewire.rs`/`portal.rs`/`pw_*.rs`, so a rebase would have re-fought the same conflict in up to nine commits; merging resolves it once with both sides in view. The repo already carries merge commits (`land/sweep-all`). Two conflicts, both resolved by keeping BOTH changes: * `linux/mod.rs` — `PortalCapturer::open` gains upstream's `want_metadata_cursor` AND keeps the sweep's `PortalSession` teardown, so the portal threads now take `(setup_tx, quit_rx, want_metadata_cursor)`. The second conflict was upstream editing inside the region Phase 5.1/5.3 moved out; the split wins and upstream's change is ported to where the code now lives: `choose_cursor_mode`'s new `want_metadata` ladder (4 arms — prefer Embedded when the encoder can't blend, and warn-then-take Metadata when Embedded isn't advertised) is now in `portal.rs`, taken verbatim. * `gamestream/stream.rs` — the pooled-capturer slot keeps upstream's third reuse key (`metadata_cursor`, beside HDR-ness) AND the sweep's `result.is_ok() && capturer.is_alive()` re-pool gate. Both guard the same slot against different failures: theirs against reusing a session negotiated for the wrong cursor mode, the sweep's (L2) against reusing a dead one. Everything else auto-merged, including the `want_metadata_cursor` thread through `host/capture.rs`'s facade and `native/stream.rs`'s `session_plan::cursor_blend_for`. Verified after the merge: workspace `cargo test` green, `clippy --workspace --all-targets` clean on Linux AND on x86_64-pc-windows-msvc, `cargo fmt --check --all` clean, pf-capture 38/38. fix(pf-capture): gamescope cursor — auth without setenv, frame-space coords, live targets (2.5)
**2.5a (L4) — stop `set_var`ing `XAUTHORITY` from a live multithreaded host.** The old connect swapped the process-global var around each `RustConnection::connect` under a mutex. That lock serialises this source against itself and nothing else: `getenv` takes no lock, so every OTHER thread's read raced it — and the concurrency is by construction, since `attach_gamescope_cursor` runs while the PipeWire thread is starting up (libspa plugin load, EGL/CUDA init). The primary path now parses the MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 entry out of the given file itself and hands it to `DefaultStream::connect` + `RustConnection::connect_to_stream_with_auth_info` — the same two steps `RustConnection::connect` performs internally, minus its env-derived auth lookup — so nothing in this process touches the environment. The env swap survives only as a fallback for a file we cannot parse, and a wrong cookie pick cannot do damage: the server rejects it and the fallback (which does libxcb's full family/address match) takes over. Sharing `pf_vdisplay`'s process-wide env lock was not the fix — wrong layer, and it would still not fix `getenv`. **2.5b (L6) — publish the pointer in FRAME coordinates.** `QueryPointer` answers in the nested root's space, but `CursorOverlay::x/y`'s contract is frame pixels, and gamescope's `-w/-h` (nested root) and `-W/-H` (output + PipeWire node) are independent knobs — at `-W 1280 -H 720 -w 640 -h 360` they differ by 2×, so the pointer drew at a fraction of its real position. The root size comes free off the setup reply we already parse; the negotiated frame size arrives from the PipeWire thread's `param_changed` through a new `Arc<AtomicU64>` (`0` = not negotiated ⇒ pass through, as before). Scaling is computed in `i64` — a 5K coordinate times a 5K width overflows `i32`. Position only: the bitmap stays at root scale, warned once so a mismatched session is visible. **2.5c (L7) — the targets are a PROVIDER, not a snapshot.** The list was discovered once, before the game launched. gamescope creates the game's Xwayland at launch and advertises only the FIRST in any child's environ (verified on this box: `--xwayland-count 2` makes `:2` and `:3`, only `:2` is advertised), so the game's display was invisible — and when the connected Big Picture display then reported "gamescope is not drawing the pointer here", the source blanked the cursor for the whole game session, which is the exact regression the module doc says it fixed. The worker now re-runs the provider every 2 s: it adopts new Xwaylands, reconnects dead ones, and `spawn` no longer returns `None` on an empty list — a stream that starts before the game converges instead of staying cursorless. The provider is a host-facade closure, same one-way-edge shape as `FrameChannelSender`. **2.5d (L8) — bound the teardown join.** `Drop` joined the worker unbounded while the worker blocks in `RustConnection` replies with NO read timeout, so a peer that stops answering but keeps its socket open hung capturer teardown — on the session path. Now: a completion channel, `recv_timeout(250 ms)`, then detach with a warning (the thread only touches its own X connections and an `Arc`'d slot). 7 new tests, all host-runnable: the cookie reader against a hostile `.Xauthority` (wrong protocol, wrong display, wildcard entry, truncation mid-length-prefix, an over-long length prefix, a missing file), display-string parsing, and the root→frame mapping incl. the 5K overflow. pf-capture 20/20; workspace clippy --all-targets clean on Linux and windows-msvc. Phase 7.2 owes the on-glass nested-gamescope validation. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(host/encode): negotiate the cursor around what the encoder can blend
EncoderCaps::blends_cursor's contract said the HOST must fall back to capturer-side compositing when a cursor-as-metadata session lands on an encoder that can't composite — but that host half was never built: open_video warned and the session streamed WITHOUT a pointer (confirmed on the VAAPI dmabuf and libav-NVENC CUDA paths; latent on vulkan RGB-direct/native-NV12). The negotiation is now caps-aware, ahead of capture, on both planes: * pf-encode grows cursor_blend_capable() — the pre-open dispatch mirror (sibling of linux_native_nv12_ok) answering whether the resolved backend composites frame.cursor; its pure core is test-pinned arm by arm. * Native plane: handshake::cursor_forward grants the cursor channel only where the resolved backend can blend (the capture-mouse flip makes the host draw the pointer on demand); denied sessions keep the pre-channel path — the compositor EMBEDS the pointer, never cursorless, never doubled. The Welcome's HOST_CAP_CURSOR bit is computed once and read back at both session-wiring sites instead of recomputed. SessionPlan::output_format additionally keeps every cursor-blend session off producer-native NV12 (the arm with no CSC to fold a cursor into), and vulkan RGB-direct now yields to a cursor-blend session even when pinned (EFC cannot composite; the open logs the override). Windows plans cursor_blend=false via the new shared cursor_blend_for() rule — the IDD capturer composites the pointer itself, and asking the encoder anyway fired the blends-cursor warn spuriously on every cursor-channel session. * GameStream plane: the hardcoded cursor_blend=true is gone. The portal source asks for cursor-as-metadata only when the resolved backend blends, otherwise negotiates an Embedded pointer (choose_cursor_mode's new ladder); the capturer pool now also keys on that mode. The virtual-output source passes false — its capture embeds the pointer where it can. The per-arm warns in vulkan_video (RGB-direct, native-NV12) are now structurally unreachable and removed. open_video's post-open check stays as the single backstop for what planning cannot see: a Vulkan-open falling back to VAAPI mid-session, and the gamescope residual (no embedded mode exists there, so a never-blending backend — H.264-on-AMD VAAPI, software — still streams cursorless; fixing that needs a compositing stage, deliberately not built in this pass). Zero-copy is preserved throughout — every fallback is a capture-negotiation change, never a readback. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

docs(pf-capture): truth pass over comments, docs and log strings (sweep Phase 1)
Every item here is prose that actively misdirects a maintainer or an operator. Landing it before
the defect fixes means those diffs get reviewed against accurate comments.
1.1 (X5) — split two merged doc blocks that documented the item ABOVE them: `hdr_meta`'s whole
contract was glued onto `fn cursor()` in lib.rs (leaving `hdr_meta` undocumented), and
`hdr_p010_selftest_at`'s was glued onto `hdr_p010_convert_bars_on_luid` in dxgi.rs. rustdoc for
the trait's central HDR contract was simply wrong.
1.2 (L9 doc half) — the `Capturer` trait doc advertised a "bounded drop-oldest channel". The
Linux portal's `sync_channel(8)` + `try_send` is drop-NEWEST: under a consumer stall the arriving
frame is discarded and the encoder gets the stalest queued one. Say so. (Phase 2.6 changes the
behaviour; this commit only stops the doc from lying about today's code.)
1.3 — delete the DONT_FIXATE claim from the dmabuf offer comment. `build_dmabuf_format` emits a
plain MANDATORY `ChoiceEnum::Enum` and `param_changed` re-emits nothing, so there is no two-step
DMA-BUF handshake here; libspa 0.9's `ChoiceFlags` cannot even express DONT_FIXATE. Recorded as a
real follow-up instead of an implemented thing.
1.4 — `mainloop.run()` no longer "blocks until process exit": the quit channel attached above it
stops the loop from `PortalCapturer::drop`.
1.5 (L11) — the 6-arm negotiation log ladder told a fully zero-copy PyroWave session "VAAPI
encode with the CPU capture path — zero-copy was disabled", one line after logging that it had
advertised the PyroWave device's dmabuf modifiers: the passthrough arm was gated on
`pyrowave_modifiers.is_empty()`, so the pyrowave case fell through to the CPU warning. Ungate it;
the CPU-path arm is now reachable only when no dmabuf is advertised at all, which is what it
claims. Its parenthetical also gains the third real cause (the session asked for CPU frames).
Control-flow-neutral for every other combination.
1.6 (W13) — `kick_dwm_compose` claimed a "sub-millisecond" round trip while its
cursor-on-a-sibling-display branch sleeps 35 ms on the CALLER's thread. State the cost on the
function and at both call sites, including which one is on the live frame path.
1.7 (W16) — DDA-era residue, DDA having been removed:
- retarget the win32u hook's rationale + all four log strings: its job is no longer "keep DDA on
one adapter" but "keep the virtual display on the adapter SET_RENDER_ADAPTER pinned" (a DXGI
reparent surfaces as the driver's TEX_FAIL render-adapter mismatch). The hook stays installed.
- the per-monitor-v2 DPI awareness rationale likewise: not DuplicateOutput1's E_ACCESSDENIED any
more, but keeping cursor/window coordinates in the PHYSICAL pixels the host's CCD geometry
(`source_desktop_rect`, `desktop_bounds`) is already in.
- `HYBRID_HOOK_HITS` was write-only. Surface it as `hybrid_hook_hits()` on the IDD-push open
line, which is the first point where DXGI has actually been exercised — the patch-readback
check proves the bytes landed, only this proves DXGI reaches the export.
- delete `hdr_p010_selftest()`: an unreachable 64×64 wrapper (main.rs calls
`hdr_p010_selftest_at`); its description moves onto the function that survives.
- `VideoConverter`'s docs promised a P010/BT.2020 output and a live scRGB input path. It pins
`YCBCR_STUDIO_G22_LEFT_P709` unconditionally and its only caller always passes
`scrgb_input: false`.
1.8 (X7) — the native handshake's 4:4:4 gate comment stated the OPPOSITE of what
`pf_capture::capturer_supports_444` returns on Windows ("delivers subsampled NV12/P010 today, so
it returns false there" — it forwards `resolved_backend_ingests_rgb_444()` and the IDD ring passes
BGRA through for an SDR 4:4:4 session).
No `.rs` behaviour delta: comments, doc comments and log strings, plus 1.5's control-flow-neutral
ladder and 1.7's counter accessor. Linux tests 6/6; clippy --all-targets clean on both targets.

Escalate-and-hold's missing half. The contention escalation (capture depth, then the NVENC pipelined retrieve) was permanent: one sustained overrun — even one CAUSED by the ABR overdrive's rebuild storms — cost the session its depth-1 latency and its sub-frame streaming forever, and `encode_us` reported queue depth instead of ASIC time for the rest of the session. - The leaky bucket now keeps scoring after escalation. A sustained every-frame-on-cadence run (~5 s at 120 fps) winds back one stage in reverse order: pipelined retrieve first (its rebuild restores the IO-stream binding and sub-frame chunked streaming), then capture depth back to 1. Attempts are paced by an exponential backoff (1 → 5 → 25 min, capped) — a workload that truly needs the escalation converges to keeping it, but never a permanent latch. - NVENC (Linux) implements `set_pipelined(false)`: a `want_sync` latch handled at the same drained safe point as the engage side (`maybe_disengage_async` mirrors `maybe_engage_async`); the lazy sync re-init re-arms everything and opens on an IDR. The stream loop polls until the switch lands, then re-runs the escalation warmup so the wind-back's own stall can't re-escalate it. `PUNKTFUNK_NVENC_ASYNC=1` (operator-pinned async) refuses the wind-back; the trait doc now specifies the two-way contract. - While escalated, `cadence_degraded` stays latched (bitrate climbs refused) even with the bucket drained: the headroom is spent, and climbs resuming mid-escalation would saw against it and starve the clean run. feat(host/native): truthful bitrate state — applied-rate adoption, ceiling pre-clamp, climb refusal
Host half of the §ABR-overdrive fix. The stream loop now reads `Encoder::applied_bitrate_bps()` after every bitrate apply and stores THAT into `bitrate_kbps`/`live_bitrate` — the send pacer, web console, mgmt registry and control-task acks all track what the ASIC really targets instead of the requested rate (the pre-fix ack promised 1.01 Gbps while the encoder ran 794 Mbps, and the client controller climbed from the phantom base forever). - A short apply teaches `encoder_ceiling_kbps` (shared atomic): the stream loop pre-clamps incoming requests to it and SKIPS the apply when nothing would change — ending the reconfigure-reject → full-rebuild(~0.6 s + IDR) storm — and the control task resolves future SetBitrate acks against it, so the client learns the ceiling through the existing ack path (no wire change; old clients converge too). - `cadence_degraded` (shared flag, leaky-bucket level ≥ 10 or an escalated session): while set, the control task resolves climbs to the current applied rate — on a fat LAN no network signal ever stops a climb the encoder can't serve, and past the compute knee more bits only deepen the cadence miss. Descents always pass; they're the cure. - Escalation-warmup hygiene: an ABR rebuild stall (~70 missed deadlines at 120 fps, 3.5× the escalate threshold) and the backlog scored against a heavier rate no longer feed the latency escalation — rebuilds reset the leaky bucket and re-run the warmup; in-place down-steps clear the bucket. fix(encode/nvenc): cache the level ceiling, expose the applied bitrate, force 2-way split at 4K120
Three encode-time fixes from the 4K120 field analysis (sessions pinned ~107 of 120 fps, 14-15 ms reported encode): - Ceiling truth: the codec-level bitrate clamp (binary search at session open) now records its result in a process-lifetime advisory cache keyed by GPU/config, so an ABR overshoot opens — or in-place reconfigures — straight AT the ceiling instead of re-running the ~6-open search (and a full rebuild + IDR) on every overshoot. New `Encoder::applied_bitrate_bps()` exposes the post-clamp rate so the session loop can stop pacing/acking a phantom requested rate (consumed host-side in a follow-up). - Clamp-search hygiene: only NVENC parameter/caps rejections steer the search now (`NvCallError` keeps the raw status downcastable); a transient failure (busy engine, session limit, OOM, driver skew) propagates instead of shrinking into — and now caching — a bogus ceiling. The floor fallback also records the split mode it actually opened with, so a later reconfigure re-presents the real session params. - Split-frame selection: one shared `resolve_split_mode` replaces the two byte-identical direct-SDK copies; the force-2-way threshold moves to `SPLIT_FORCE_PIXEL_RATE` (950 Mpix/s, shared with the libav path) because 4K120 = 995,328,000 px/s missed the old `> 1e9` gate by 0.47% and stayed on AUTO — which never engages at 2160 px height, leaving the second NVENC engine idle in exactly the mode the threshold existed for. The Linux session-ready info! line now carries the final split mode (journals are INFO+; this was undiagnosable from user logs). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(vdisplay/gamescope): DM-flavor-aware session takeover — stop masking Nobara's plasmalogin to death
Field report (Nobara 43 HTPC): switching the host to Steam Game Mode mid-stream permanently black-screened the box. Live-proven root cause on a Nobara repro VM: our takeover masks the box's gamescope-session-plus unit, plasmalogin's Relogin=true then fails its session Exec repeatedly and trips systemd's start limit within ~1 s — the display manager dies, and our restore verb (unmask + user start) cannot bring a seatless gamescope back. Only 'reset-failed + restart' of the DM recovers. The takeover is now display-manager-flavor-aware: - SDDM (Bazzite/SteamOS) keeps the proven mask+SIGKILL path unchanged. - plasmalogin/unknown DMs never mask: with privilege (root or an operator polkit rule scoped to the DM unit — documented) the host stops the DM for the stream and restores it with reset-failed + restart (PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD as fallback), recorded in the persisted takeover state so a host crash still restores; without privilege the managed takeover degrades to ATTACH and mirrors the box's live Game Mode instead of destabilizing the seat. Both legs of the privileged cycle live-verified on the repro VM (headless managed session works with zero login sessions; render nodes are 0666). A loaded-but-inactive leftover instance never triggers the DM stop. Companion fixes from the same triage: - ensure_box_gamescope_mode gains the attach-only rebuild-probe guard both managed paths already had (stale post-capture-loss detection restarted the box's unit), and no longer re-modes a box that drives a physical display — attach mirrors on-glass; re-mode is the headless-box model. - Capture-loss rebuilds targeting gamescope get a 100 s budget: the 40 s budget expired inside the first 45 s Steam-cold-start launch attempt, a guaranteed single-shot failure. - A PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR pin now WARNs once per capture loss when the live session no longer matches it (the pin disables session-following — the reporter's original stream-death trigger). - A managed session that took nothing over (client gamescope pin beside a live desktop) is stopped on disconnect instead of being orphaned forever. The Linux injection leg of design/pen-tablet-input.md: 0xCC/0x05 pen batches now route through the per-session PenTracker into a lazily-created 'Punktfunk Pen' uinput tablet (BTN_TOOL_PEN/RUBBER, pressure, tilt-from-polar, ABS_Z barrel roll, hover distance, INPUT_PROP_DIRECT) — compositors pick it up via libinput and hand apps zwp_tablet_v2 with full fidelity. The host now advertises HOST_CAP_PEN when /dev/uinput is accessible (PUNKTFUNK_PEN=0 kill-switch); transitions group into SYN frames so proximity-enter carries its position. Stroke failsafe: clients heartbeat ≤100ms while in range (documented wire contract — capture APIs are silent for a stationary pen); 200ms of silence force-releases. 'punktfunk-host pen-test' draws a pressure-ramped sine stroke through the real tracker→uinput chain, no client needed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

The Steam-conflict gate matched any physical Valve `28DE` HID device, so a
Steam Machine with a physical Steam Controller 2 (`28DE:1302`) plugged in
degraded a client's requested virtual Steam Deck (`28DE:1205`) to a DualSense
— the reporter's controller passthrough came up as the wrong pad.
Steam Input drives *distinct* Steam controllers side by side; only two
*identical* `28DE` devices confuse it (the Deck-as-host case: built-in
`28DE:1205` + a second virtual Deck, observed live on Bazzite). Narrow the
gate to key on the exact VID+PID instead of the `28DE` vendor alone:
- `steam_backend_product()` maps each virtual Steam backend to the PID it
enumerates as (Deck 1205, classic SC 1102, SC2 1302, SC2 Puck 1304).
- `physical_steam_controller_present()` -> `physical_steam_product_present(pid)`
matches `:28DE:{PID}`, keeping the FVPF-serial / `vhci_hcd` / `/virtual/`
exclusions so our own virtual pads never count.
- `degrade_steam_on_conflict` degrades only on a same-PID duplicate and logs
the conflicting identity. `PUNKTFUNK_STEAM_FORCE=1` override unchanged.
A physical SC2 no longer blocks a virtual Deck (and vice versa); a genuine
same-identity duplicate (physical Deck + virtual Deck, or physical SC2 +
SC2 passthrough) still degrades. Adds a unit test for the PID mapping.

The KWin/Phase-A/B commits were built but never clippy-checked (that distrobox had no clippy component), so they left TEMP on-glass probes and lint debt in the tree. With clippy now runnable (fedora rust 1.96.1 = CI parity): - drop the `fec424ee`/`8cff30d5` TEMP probes: the `update_cursor_meta` SPA_META diagnostic logs (also un-detaches the `// SAFETY:` comment from its `unsafe` block → fixes `undocumented_unsafe_blocks`) and the KWin composite-arm probe in the encode loop. - `#[allow(clippy::too_many_arguments)]` on `spawn_pipewire` (8 params since the KWin leg added `expect_exact_dims`; mirrors `from_virtual_output`). clippy `-p pf-capture -p pf-vdisplay -p punktfunk-host --locked --features nvenc,vulkan-encode -- -D warnings` is now green. (--all-targets additionally trips a pre-existing env mismatch: the fedora libspa binding lacks `SPA_VIDEO_TRANSFER_SMPTE2084`, referenced only by a `#[cfg(test)]` guard-test — not a code issue; CI's pinned pipewire has it.) feat(capture): gamescope cursor via XFixes shape + QueryPointer position (Phase C)
gamescope excludes its pointer from the PipeWire node it feeds us and can't embed one either (`set_hw_cursor` is inert), so every gamescope stream was cursorless. Read the pointer from gamescope's nested Xwayland instead — XFixesGetCursorImage for shape/hotspot/visibility, core QueryPointer for position — and publish a CursorOverlay into the capturer's existing `cursor_live` slot, so the encoder blend composites it into the video exactly like the SPA_META_Cursor path. - pf-capture/src/linux/xfixes_cursor.rs (new): the XFixes reader. Connects to EVERY nested Xwayland (Gaming Mode runs one per --xwayland-count) and follows the focused one each tick (the display whose pointer moves), reading that display's own cursor shape. Un-premultiplies ARGB -> straight RGBA. Drop stops the thread. - Capturer::attach_gamescope_cursor + the PortalCapturer override spawn it into the same `cursor_live` slot; pf_vdisplay::gamescope_xwayland_cursor_targets discovers the (DISPLAY, XAUTHORITY) pairs via the GAMESCOPE_WAYLAND_DISPLAY scan. - host: SessionPlan.gamescope_cursor (set from the compositor at both resolve sites AND on a mid-stream Desktop->Gaming switch); the blend gate now builds the encoder blend for gamescope; a sibling composite arm attaches capturer.cursor() per tick for capture-mode clients (no channel needed). native NV12 is disabled for these sessions — that encode path can't blend the cursor (it assumes gamescope embeds the pointer), so we capture RGB and route to the proven CUDA VkSlotBlend / compute-CSC blend. - the pipewire thread no longer clobbers `cursor_live` with None on a buffer that carries no SPA_META_Cursor (gamescope) — that raced the XFixes writer and strobed the composited pointer on/off. On-glass (home-bazzite-2, RTX 5070 Ti, Gaming Mode): cursor visible + steady in Big Picture and CS2 menus, follows focus between the two Xwaylands, hidden in-game. feat(vdisplay): compositor-embedded pointer for sessions without the cursor channel (Phase B)
Since the cursor-channel work, every Linux virtual output was created in metadata pointer mode — making ALL sessions depend on host-side cursor compositing, including the ones that can never use the channel (Moonlight/ GameStream, legacy clients, capture-mode starts). Those sessions paid the blend bring-up per session and, whenever a visible cursor was composited, the loss of NVENC's stream-ordered submit — for a strictly worse cursor than the compositor's own. Mirror the Windows no-regression gate: the already-wired per-session set_hw_cursor(cursor_forward) now drives the Linux backends too. A cursor-channel session gets metadata (shapes forwarded, composite flip blends host-side — today's validated path, unchanged); every other session gets the pointer compositor-EMBEDDED at creation (KWin zkde pointer=2, Mutter cursor-mode=1, wlroots/hyprland portal CursorMode::Embedded — their pre-channel default; the portal pair also gains the Metadata arm for channel sessions, wired but untested on-glass). SessionPlan.cursor_blend narrows to cursor-forward sessions and rides into the direct-SDK NVENC open, which skips the Vulkan slot-blend bring-up entirely when off — embedded sessions ring on plain CUDA surfaces and pay zero cursor cost, per-session or per-frame. The keep-alive registry's reuse key grows the created pointer mode (new VirtualDisplay::hw_cursor getter): a kept embedded display has no cursor metadata for a channel session to forward, and a kept metadata display would leave a channel-less session with no pointer in its frames. chore(kwin-composite): TEMP blend-path probes — DROP BEFORE MERGE
Rate-limited journal logging bracketing the silent segment of the Linux composite path: what overlay (if any) the encode loop's composite arm hands the encoder, and whether the NVENC cursor-blend kernel launches and with what geometry. On-glass (KWin leg) the blend module loads yet the composite cursor stays invisible — these two probes attribute it to no-overlay / stripped-en-route / kernel-draws-nothing. The module-loaded INFO line is permanent (success must be as attributable as failure); everything else in this commit is temporary. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
