feat(windows): sign via Azure Artifact Signing — a 3-day leaf makes timestamping mandatory
Releases move from the self-signed CN=unom cert to Azure Artifact Signing (formerly Trusted Signing): account `unomsigning`, profile `unom-io`, signed by the `punktfunk-ci-signing` service principal, which holds only the Artifact Signing Certificate Profile Signer role scoped to that one profile. Both pack scripts gain the backend ahead of the existing .pfx and ephemeral fallbacks, so canary and fork builds are unaffected. Three things that are easy to get wrong, and are handled here rather than discovered in the field: Azure mints a leaf certificate per signing request that expires in about three days. Both scripts previously retried WITHOUT a timestamp when a timestamped sign failed — under Azure that ships an artifact which verifies on the runner and goes untrusted days later, on every user's machine at once. The retry is now gated on the mode: still lenient for a .pfx whose cert outlives the release, a hard failure for Azure. The MSIX manifest Publisher must equal the signer subject byte-for-byte, because package identity is Name + Publisher. The default is now the profile's verified subject, written with `[char]0xFC` escapes rather than literal umlauts so this UTF-8-without-BOM file cannot silently mojibake the DN into one that no longer matches. pack-msix.ps1 now also reads the signature back off the packed .msix and fails on drift — asymmetric on purpose: a subject that disagrees is fatal, a subject that cannot be read is only a warning, since Get-AuthenticodeSignature's .msix support varies by Windows version and signtool has already reported success by then. NOTE this changes package identity, so existing installs need an uninstall, not an upgrade. The updater's leaf-pinning note was wrong and is corrected: update/windows.rs claimed the AUTHENTICODE_SHA256 field made Trusted Signing "a manifest edit", but a per-request leaf is exactly what a leaf pin cannot track — a pin would go stale within days and reject every release after it. Drivers are deliberately untouched: their catalogs keep the DRIVER_CERT_* cert and the installer still plants it as a machine root. The two signatures were always independent (SmartScreen/UAC vs PnP), which is why the installer could move without them. Whether a publicly-trusted catalog would let us drop that root plant is recorded as an unverified follow-up, not assumed. Verified: both scripts parse under the PowerShell 7 AST parser, both workflows are valid YAML, the evaluated Publisher default matches the subject Azure reports for the profile (86 chars, ordinal), rustfmt clean. NOT verified on Windows — the sign path itself needs an on-glass run on .133. |

chore(packaging): retire VB-Cable — audio's substrate is Steam's drivers
The other half of the audio-substrate decision (spikes S2+S3 green, minted
endpoints landed in the previous commit): stop bundling a third-party
kernel driver the host no longer needs.
installer the VB-CABLE task, payload, silent-install run and the
donationware notice are gone; a suppressible notice tells
a Steam-less box that audio needs Steam INSTALLED (never
running) and that installing it later just works. A cable
from an older install is still deliberately not removed.
packer + CI -VbCableDir/VBCABLE_DIR, the staged-payload check and the
runner provisioning download are gone; SBOM drops the
redistributed-driver component.
winget the VB-Audio bundling-grant agreement becomes the honest
Steam requirement (surfaced on the unattended path where
no wizard is on screen).
docs windows-host/uninstall/security/echo say what actually
ships: no kernel-mode driver of our own, endpoints minted
from Valve's vendor-signed drivers, VB-CABLE mentioned
only as the historical fallback that keeps working.
host wording the mic-open guidance and module headers lead with Steam;
the NAME ladder itself is untouched — demoting 'cable
input' was considered and rejected (on a box where minting
transiently fails, the SSM would outrank an installed
cable, steal the silent sink, and make audio host-audible).

Step 2 told you to add the Caddy vhost by hand on unom-1. That instruction is what broke the source: ~/caddy/Caddyfile is a copy that deploy-all.sh rsyncs over from unom/infra, with no .git there to warn you, so the hand-added block survived until the 2026-07-31 hardening commit rewrote the file from the repo's own copy and deleted it. Point step 2 at unom/infra and record how the failure presents, since it does not look like an ingress problem from the client side: no vhost means no certificate for that SNI, so Caddy answers with TLS internal_error (alert 80) before sending one, and winget surfaces that as WINHTTP_CALLBACK_STATUS_FLAG_SECURITY_CHANNEL_ERROR / 0x8a15003b. Also note that port 80 is useless for diagnosing it — Caddy 308s every Host to https including names it has never heard of — and give the SNI probe that does work. A user found this in their log and had never been offered a choice:
WARN GameStream/Moonlight compat ENABLED (--gamestream): its pairing runs over
plain HTTP and its legacy control encryption can reuse GCM nonces
(security-review #5/#9) — an on-path LAN attacker could MITM pairing or
recover input. Enable only on a TRUSTED network.
They were right. The `gamestream` task carried no `Flags: unchecked`, so it was
pre-ticked; and since a silent install takes the wizard's own task defaults

`winget install unom.PunktfunkHost` after adding the source, and `winget upgrade`
from then on. Windows had no update path at all before this — no self-update, no
package manager — so keeping a host current meant noticing a release and
re-running an installer by hand.
Ships the manifest trio in winget-pkgs' own format (so submitting upstream later
is a copy, not a rewrite) plus a release-time generator that substitutes only
version, URL, hash and release-notes link. Everything reviewable — the silent
switches, the agreements, the installation notes — stays in the checked-in
templates rather than buried in a generator.
Silent installs deliberately take the SAME task defaults the wizard shows: a
per-channel default is a support trap. The disclosures the wizard puts on screen
travel as manifest Agreements instead, shown before install and requiring
acceptance — VB-Audio's bundling grant wants the user to see VB-CABLE's origin
and donationware status, and a silent install shows them nothing otherwise. The
console password can only be pointed at, never printed: it is generated per
install and the notes are fixed at publish time.
Self-hosted rather than the community repo, which gates on Defender/SmartScreen
validation the self-signed installer cert would not clear today. The source is
three endpoints — /information, /manifestSearch, /packageManifests/{id}. The
reference implementation's other twenty are its admin API for mutating a
CosmosDB; a catalogue generated at release time has nothing to mutate.
It runs on unom-1 as a stock bun image with the two .mjs files bind-mounted, the
same shape as the flatpak server, so there is no image to build or pull. The
catalogue is derived from the RELEASES rather than local files: winget resolves
--version and upgrade against the version list, so a source that only knew the
newest release could neither pin an older one nor show an upgrade path from it.
That also leaves no state to drift — re-running the build reproduces it exactly.
NormalizedPackageNameAndPublisher is declared unsupported on purpose. winget
derives it client-side with its own normalization, and a near-miss silently
mis-correlates an installed host; ProductCode is exact and Inno gives us one.
28 checks drive the handler directly, and CI gates on them before anything
reaches the box — a wrong response shape does not fail loudly, it just makes
winget report "no package found".
