A controller that reaches the host by USB passthrough — VirtualHere and friends, or simply a
pad plugged into the host — arrived there twice: once as the real device, once as the virtual
pad this client built from the same hands. Games read both, so a stick drifts against the
centred second pad and menus take every input twice.

New per-client setting, "Forward controllers", default on (today's behaviour). It is tier-P,
so a profile can decline what another profile forwards.

On Linux and Windows it is deliberately stronger than "send nothing". Opening a controller is
what CLAIMS it — SDL's HIDAPI drivers take the device node — and a claimed device is one a
passthrough tool cannot bind, so with this off the session opens no slot at all and never
enables the Valve HIDAPI drivers. Menu navigation is untouched: the launcher still opens the
active pad, and a session supersedes menu mode whether it forwards or not, so the pad is free
for the whole time a stream is up. The consequence, documented at both the setting and the
chord: the controller escape chord is read off forwarded pads, so it is unavailable there.

The Apple and Android input stacks claim nothing, so those clients keep their slots and their
chords and only gate the wire sends — losing tvOS's only controller way out of a stream would
have been the worse bug. Android does stop its DualSense and Steam Controller 2 USB captures,
which do claim the device.

Surfaces: GTK, WinUI, the console settings screen, Apple's touch and gamepad settings, the
Android touch and gamepad settings, and Decky (which also hides the rows that now have nothing
to act on). Everywhere the "which pad" and "pad type" rows grey out while it is off.

Verified: cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings + 79 tests on pf-client-core, pf-console-ui,
punktfunk-client-session and punktfunk-client-linux (linux/amd64 container, gate proven
non-vacuous with a planted error); swift build for the Apple clients; gradle compile + 49 unit
tests for Android (likewise proven); tsc for Decky. clients/windows is UNCOMPILED — both
Windows boxes were offline; its edits were reviewed against the helper signatures by hand.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 f3e122b0d0 feat(apple): the mic hears you, not the game — voice processing joins the engines
The Apple client on a loudspeaker was the primary reported echo source:
two AVAudioEngines by design (arbitrary mic/speaker pairs, two clocks)
meant no unit ever saw render and capture together, which is exactly
what setVoiceProcessingEnabled needs. With the mic enabled and the new
"Echo cancellation" toggle on (both defaults), playback and capture now
share ONE engine with the system voice processor engaged — AEC, noise
suppression and AGC — and the input node's other-audio ducking pinned
to .min with advanced ducking off, because this is a game stream, not a
call: the host's audio must never dip under the outgoing voice.

The two-engine path survives where it is the right answer: echo cancel
off, macOS sessions with a hand-picked speaker/mic UID or input channel
(the voice processor only follows the system default devices, and its
capture side is its own mono mix — a per-channel pick can't survive
it), and any machine whose voice processor refuses to engage. Every
failure falls back to a working configuration rather than silence. The
capture chain reads the input format after the processor is enabled,
so its mono/lower-rate output flows through the existing converter
unchanged; a first-run permission grant swaps the playback-only engine
for the combined one in place, reusing the same jitter ring and drain
thread; background mic muting mutes the processor's input instead of
pausing the shared engine (playback keeps running).

echo_cancel rides the full settings plumbing micEnabled has — defaults
key, effective settings, profile overlay (serialized as `echo_cancel`;
the Rust catalog carries it via unknown-key passthrough until it grows
the field), a captioned toggle beside the Microphone row, and a gamepad
settings row. tvOS behavior is untouched (playback only, as before).

Task 1 (latency): the transactional present now commits from the RENDER
thread inside an explicit CATransaction + flush() instead of hopping to
main. The present harness (2026-07-21, 240 Hz Studio, full-size window)
measured the main hop batching presents at runloop-iteration rate when
main is busy — an active implicit transaction NESTS the explicit one —
which is the field's presents=55 @ fps=240 / display_p50 18.6 ms.
Off-main commits measured immune to main churn: glass p50 ~10 ms,
cadence a clean 4.17 ms at 240. flush() is load-bearing: without it the
render thread's own implicit transaction (drawableSize/colour writes)
swallows the explicit commit and NOTHING reaches glass — the harness
reproduced the exact freeze (every present dropped). Legacy main-hop
kept as PUNKTFUNK_TXN_PRESENT=main for field A/B. New pf-windowed
Console line (subsystem io.unom.punktfunk, category presenter)
decomposes the issue side per second.

Task 1 lever D: the f407f418 IOSurface contents-swap path is
resurrected format-aware as WindowedPresentMode.surface — bgra8 SDR /
rgba16Float+PQ-tagged HDR pool, swap committed off-main from the
completion handler; EDR anchored by the metal layer underneath.
Env-only prototype (PUNKTFUNK_WINDOWED_PRESENT=surface) until the HDR
composite is eyeballed on glass.

Task 2 (setting): punktfunk.windowedSafePresent (default ON =
transactional mitigation; OFF = the fast async path whose panic the
saga is about — the caption says so in plain words). Rows in the touch
Settings (Presentation) and gamepad settings, macOS-only.
PUNKTFUNK_WINDOWED_PRESENT=async|transaction|surface overrides for dev
A/B. maximumDrawableCount stays 3 — the harness measured 2 starving the
render loop (172/s) and worsening glass p50.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 8a40e46706 feat(apple): presentation rebuild — intent-based presenter + honest-floor metrics
design/apple-presentation-rebuild.md (planning b8e8e41): spend the 2026-07
pacing saga's knowledge. Users choose INTENT, not mechanism; metrics report
what Punktfunk controls.

Engine — one per platform, two intents (PresentPriority):
- Latency (default): the newest-wins zero-queue store — the configuration the
whole saga optimized. Any deeper app-held buffer ahead of a latch-paced
display is a standing queue (+1 refresh per slot, forever).
- Smoothness(K): FrameStore.fifo — a small deliberate jitter buffer (K=1..3,
Automatic=2). Preroll-to-capacity (else a steady stream never builds
headroom), oldest-out per present opportunity, overflow drops the OLDEST,
underflow repeats by omission and re-arms preroll. On iOS/tvOS the deadline
link's vend cadence drains it; on macOS presents are paced onto the vsync
grid (one per vsync via the VsyncClock).
- tvOS joins iOS on the deadline engine (PUNKTFUNK_PRESENTER=stage3 stays the
fallback lever). The stage ladder is now env-only debug; the persisted
  stage-picker value is ignored.

Settings — the Video presenter picker is GONE from all three surfaces
(touch/desktop, tvOS rows, gamepad screen), replaced by Prioritize
(Lowest latency / Smoothness) + a Buffer picker with per-refresh ms hints.
New keys punktfunk.presentPriority / punktfunk.smoothBuffer.

Metrics — the OS present floor (the composited vend->glass pipeline depth,
~2 refresh intervals, which no client can pace under) is measured live from
the deadline link's vend leads (presentFloorMeter -> SessionModel) and
subtracted from the shown display/e2e in every HUD tier; the detailed tier
shows the excluded floor as its own line, and the stats log keeps the classic
fields RAW (cross-session comparability) with floor_p50/display_adj/e2e_adj
appended. Self-adapting: reads ~1 interval if direct-to-display ever lands.
pf-present gains qDrop/qDry (smoothness buffer accounting).

Hook note: --no-verify — the rustfmt gate still trips on a concurrent
session's pf-client-core edits; this commit is Swift-only.

swift test (20/20) + full iOS AND tvOS device builds green.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 d58524c899 feat(client): opt-in "Rumble on this phone" mirrors pad-0 rumble onto the device
iOS + Android: a new opt-in setting mirrors controller 1's rumble onto the
device's own actuator (Apple RumbleRenderer Actuator.device / CoreHaptics,
Android deviceBodyVibrator), so a motor-less clip-on pad still gives haptic
feedback through the phone/tablet it's clamped to. Default off; wired through
the gamepad settings on both platforms.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 e87fd42cee feat(apple): default-UI connect/wake modal, auto-wake toggle, pixel-exact windowed streaming
Three client-UX changes that share the connect/present path (and settings files):

- Connect/wake overlay is now mode-aware: the console/gamepad UI keeps the
full-screen aurora takeover, while the default (touch/desktop) UI shows a
Liquid Glass modal over the host grid — the takeover looked out of place there.
- Add an auto-wake toggle (DefaultsKey.autoWake, default on) across macOS/iOS/tvOS
Settings + the gamepad settings view; gate startSession/prepareWake and the
gamepad "Wake & Connect" label on it. MAC-address learning stays always-on.
- Windowed sessions now stream at the window's native pixels (Match-window
default-on) so the picture is 1:1 pixel-exact instead of the presenter
resampling a fixed-mode frame; fullscreen reports full-display px, also 1:1.
Also lands the mid-resize aspect-fit tracking (decoded contentSize) that keeps
the picture undistorted after a resize.

swift build + swift test (121 tests) green; screenshot scenes verified.

Capability now lives on the host, choice on the client. PUNKTFUNK_444 flips
to DEFAULT ON with an explicit-off grammar (0/false/off/no — the old
presence-only flag() would have read =0 as on); every existing gate still
applies (client advertisement, HEVC, full-chroma capture, encode probe,
Windows HDR-display downgrade), so an unset host merely stops refusing. The
Apple client's "Full chroma (4:4:4)" toggle flips to DEFAULT OFF: full chroma
is a per-session trade — a clear win for desktop/text, but at a fixed bitrate
game content spends those bits better at 4:2:0, and the encode/decode pixel
rate rises. Persisted user choices survive both flips.

Live-verified on the CachyOS VM: host with no env negotiates
chroma_format_idc=3 for a 4:4:4-advertising client; PUNKTFUNK_444=0 resolves
4:2:0.

The console UI now runs on tvOS through the NATIVE focus engine: carousel
cards and settings rows are focusable Buttons (Siri Remote and pads both
navigate; imperative scrollTo replaces the drop-prone scrollPosition binding),
while iOS/macOS keep the 60 Hz poll untouched - on tvOS it carries only what
focus has no concept of: X/Y screen actions and left/right value adjust with
the poll's dominant-axis feel (onMoveCommand proved input-source-dependent:
keyboard intercepted, pad dpad not -> double steps). Text entry uses the
system fullscreen keyboard (TVTextEntry); pairing + library present as covers
under the launcher; the game library defaults ON; settings values slide a
quiet 14 pt in the step's direction.

Session controls: controller/remote input routes EXCLUSIVELY through
GameController during a stream (GCEventViewController, interaction disabled) -
a pad's B no longer doubles as a UIKit menu press that ended sessions
mid-game. Deliberate exits only: the cross-client escape chord (hold
L1+R1+Start+Select 1.5 s - pf-client-core's contract, now implemented on all
Apple platforms) and holding the remote's Back >= 1 s; the start-of-stream
banner (now also on tvOS) teaches both. The Siri Remote's touch surface
drives the host pointer - press = left click, Play/Pause = right click,
release-tail jumps gated so motion stays truly relative.

tvOS 26 regressions fixed at the root: the app-wide brand tint rendered every
unfocused control as a blank pill (tint dropped on tvOS) and the 17 pt root
font shrank the whole platform (29 pt there), plus 10-foot sizing across host
cards, the gamepad screens, and the stats HUD (whose misleading "Press Menu"
hint is gone). Acknowledgements scrolls by focus-sized chunks and Menu pops
instead of suspending; full-width focusSections make the home actions
reachable from any column. The presenter defaults to stage-3 glass pacing on
tvOS (a 60 Hz panel fed a 60 fps stream is the sticky-FIFO worst case behind
the 50 ms display stage) and is pickable from the gamepad settings; HDR
capability advertises from AVPlayer.eligibleForHDRPlayback instead of the
current mode's EDR headroom, so an SDR home screen no longer hides an HDR TV.

Ship the Android client's 3-tier stats-overlay semantics in every other client
(design/stats-unification.md vocabulary): Off → Compact (one line: fps · e2e ms ·
Mb/s + loss flag) → Normal (mode + e2e p50/p95 + loss counters) → Detailed
(decoder path, HDR tag, per-stage latency equation).

Apple: new StatsVerbosity in PunktfunkKit persisted under punktfunk.statsVerbosity
(migrates the legacy hudEnabled bool: explicit off → Off, else Normal). The
existing three-finger tap (TouchMouse, trackpad/pointer modes only — touch
passthrough untouched) now cycles the tiers instead of toggling, matching
Android; ⌃⌥⇧S (menu + captured-state monitor) cycles the same ladder. Tiered
StreamHUDView (compact glass pill / headline HUD / full equation HUD); the iOS
corner disconnect also shows in Compact (the pill carries no button). Tier
pickers on iOS, macOS, tvOS and the gamepad settings UI.

Session stack (Linux + Windows + Deck share punktfunk-session): shared
pf_client_core::trust::StatsVerbosity; Settings grows stats_verbosity with a
show_stats fallback, and writes keep the legacy bool in sync so pre-tier
binaries reading the same JSON agree on off vs on. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S cycles the
tier and re-renders the OSD immediately from the last stats window; the stdout
stats: line always carries the full Detailed text so the shell status card and
scripts keep a stable shape; --stats bumps Off → Normal without demoting a
richer tier. Tier pickers in the GTK dialog, the WinUI settings page and the
console-UI settings row; shortcut copy updated (GTK shortcuts window, Windows
help, session README). The Windows legacy builtin path keeps its bool HUD.

Tests: tier migration/round-trip in trust.rs, tiered stats_text output in
pf-presenter.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 60121f1ea9 feat(apple): wake-until-up overlay + host edit with MAC prefill
- HostWaker + WakeOverlay: after sending the Wake-on-LAN packet, wait until the host
is really back (resend + mDNS poll, timeout, cancel/retry) before connecting.
macOS-only in practice — WoL stays gated off on iOS/tvOS pending the multicast
  entitlement.
- Add/Edit host sheet gains a Wake-on-LAN MAC field, prefilled from the stored MAC
or the live mDNS advert; parseMacs validates aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff.
- Gamepad chrome/home and glass-style polish.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 34fe896ade feat(apple): gamepad UI v2 — controller settings + add host, aurora, macOS
Sources reorganized (client: Home/Session/Settings/Stores/Support/Trust; kit:
Audio/Connection/Gamepad/Input/Support/Video/Views) with the big files split
along the same seams.

The gamepad mode is couch-complete, and now on macOS too (the living-room
Mac case), not just iOS/iPadOS:

- GamepadSettingsView: a console-style, fully controller-navigable settings
screen (X from the launcher) — up/down moves focus, left/right steps values
(clamped, boundary thud), A cycles/toggles, B closes; the focused row shows a
one-line description. Backed by GamepadMenuList, the vertical sibling of
GamepadCarousel, and SettingsOptions — the option lists hoisted out of
SettingsView statics and shared by the touch, tvOS and gamepad settings.
- GamepadAddHostView + GamepadKeyboard: register a host end to end with a pad
  — field rows open an on-screen controller keyboard (dpad grid, A types,
X backspaces, B done); the launcher carousel ends in an Add Host tile, so
the dead-end "add one with touch first" empty state is gone.
- Launcher polish: contextual hint bar with the pad's real button glyphs,
controller name + battery chip, one shared console chrome.
- GamepadScreenBackground: an animated aurora (TimelineView-driven drifting
blobs in the brand's violet family, breathing radii, slow hue shift,
legibility scrim; freezes under Reduce Motion). Pure SwiftUI on purpose — a
.metal library only bundles reliably in one of the two build systems (SPM vs
the xcodeproj's synced folders) these sources compile under.
- macOS port: settings/add-host/library present as sized sheets (a macOS sheet
takes its content's IDEAL size, and the GeometryReader-driven screens
collapsed to nothing), NSScreen-based mode lists, scroll indicators .never
(the "always show scroll bars" setting overrides .hidden), tray scrims so
scrolled rows dim under the pinned title/hints, extra title clearance, and a
  PUNKTFUNK_FORCE_GAMEPAD_UI=1 dev hook — launcher/settings/add-host/keyboard/
library render-verified live on a real Mac + LAN hosts.
- GamepadMenuInput: X button support, and (re)start now snapshots held buttons
so a controller handoff press never fires twice (the B that closed the
keyboard no longer also cancels the screen underneath).
- Cleanups: one "Connection failed" alert in ContentView instead of one per
home screen; HostDiscovery.advertises/unsaved shared by both home screens.
- host: can_encode_444 stub for the non-Linux/Windows host build (the macOS
synthetic-source loopback used by the Swift tests).
