enricobuehler b444308592 feat(host): PUNKTFUNK_HOST_NAME names the host in Moonlight and the clients
A box called `bazzite-htpc` had no way to present itself as "Living Room"
short of renaming the machine. The new knob overrides the name everywhere
a human sees it: the GameStream serverinfo <hostname> element and the
mDNS service instance name both adverts carry. Unset (the default) is the
machine's own hostname, exactly as before.

Free text is the point, so the DNS-level name is now a separate concern
from the display name. The instance label may contain spaces and accents;
an A-record target may not, and mdns-sd rejects the whole ServiceInfo if
the target is not a legal name — which would take discovery down rather
than merely look wrong. dns_label() sanitizes the target and passes an
already-legal name through byte-for-byte, so hosts without the override
advertise precisely what they always did. The display name loses `.` (it
would split the label, and clients derive the name as the first label of
the fullname, so "Ben's PC v1.2" would arrive as "Ben's PC v1") and is
capped at the 63-byte DNS-SD ceiling on a char boundary.

Field triage (Nobara, Discord): the kde.md starter host.env told desktop
users to set PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=kwin, which PINS the backend — detect()
short-circuits and the capture-loss rebuild never re-detects — so a
mid-stream switch to Game Mode killed the stream instead of following it.
A follow-up hardcoded XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 anchor broke PipeWire
for any non-1000 uid (pw audio connect: Creation failed).

Revamp across every starter/example/reference:
- Desktop starters (kde/gnome/hyprland/sway) shrink to
  PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE=virtual + an explicit warning that pinning
  disables session-following; forcing a backend is CI/appliance-only.
- host.env.example: rewritten around auto-detection; anchors demoted to a
  commented ssh/cron-only block with the uid trap spelled out; the
  gamescope ATTACH/MANAGED knobs documented (previously missing);
  case-sensitivity called out.
- packaging/bazzite/host.env + README: drop the uid-1000 anchors (a
  systemctl --user service inherits/derives them); README's stale
  PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=gamescope-era template synced to the real one.
- packaging/kde/host.env: loud APPLIANCE-ONLY header (it pins on purpose).
- configuration.md: session-anchors section inverted to "leave unset",
  compositor row states the pin consequence, case-sensitivity note.
- troubleshooting.md: new "session fails right after editing host.env"
  section (case, wrong-uid anchors, stale pin, restart-to-apply).
- gamescope.md/bazzite.md: attach/managed descriptions match current
  behavior (managed is the infra-detected default; attach re-modes a
  box-owned session to the client's resolution).

A retrying unpaired client parks one QUIC connection per knock, but the
delegated-approval waiters were keyed on fingerprint alone — one console
Approve resolved ALL of them. Observed live (2026-07-10): an iPad knocked
3x, one Approve admitted three full sessions, three Mutter virtual
monitors were created within ~200us plus an ApplyMonitorsConfig, and
gnome-shell SIGSEGV'd inside meta_monitor_manager_rebuild — dropping the
box to the GDM greeter, unreachable until reboot (GDM auto-login runs
once per boot) while the lingering host spammed "RemoteDesktop ... not
activatable" libei errors.

Four fixes, outermost symptom inward:

- Knock generations (native_pairing): note_pending returns a per-knock
  generation; a re-knock bumps it and wakes the previous waiter, which
  resolves the new PairingDecision::Superseded (connection closes; the
  console list is unchanged). An approval records WHICH generation it
  admitted, so a stale waiter polling only after the pending entry is
  cleared still loses the tie — exactly one admission, no matter the
  interleaving.

- TOPOLOGY_LOCK (vdisplay/mutter): every Mutter monitor mutation
  (pre-snapshot -> RecordVirtual -> ApplyMonitorsConfig, and the
  teardown Stop) is serialized process-wide. Concurrent rebuilds are
  what segfault the shell (second on-glass crash of this class — the
  teardown race is already documented in-file), and serialization also
  keeps wait_virtual_connector's snapshot diff from attributing a
  sibling's connector. Create timeout 20s -> 45s for lock queueing.

- Session-env hygiene (vdisplay): when detection finds NOTHING live,
  clear the previous connect's XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP/WAYLAND_DISPLAY
  retarget. A stale GNOME value kept mutter::is_available() true after
  the crash, routing explicit-backend connects into the dead session
  (create timeouts + libei error loops) instead of the crisp "no live
  graphical session" handshake error.

- Opt-in recovery hook (config + punktfunk1): PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD
  fires (detached via sh -c, debounced to one launch/min) when a client
  connects while no graphical session is live — e.g. `sudo -n systemctl
  restart gdm` re-runs auto-login and the client's retry lands in the
  recovered desktop. The handshake error tells the client to retry.

mDNS advertisement (native _punktfunk._udp AND GameStream _nvstream) can now
be disabled with --no-mdns on serve/punktfunk1-host or PUNKTFUNK_MDNS=0
(the PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY off-grammar) — for multicast-dead environments
(bridged Docker, CI netns) where the advert reaches nobody or fails outright
and aborts the GameStream plane; clients dial a manually-added host instead
(mDNS-blind host-add works since the 0.8.4 dial-first fix). Unit tests no
longer advertise on the LAN (mdns: false).

punktfunk1-host gains --pairing-pin <PIN> (the already-plumbed fixed-PIN
test seam, now CLI-exposed; empty refused like --mgmt-token) so a CI harness
runs a deterministic SPAKE2 ceremony instead of scraping the logged PIN.

Verified live: --no-mdns + PUNKTFUNK_MDNS=0 skip the advert, --pairing-pin
arms with the fixed PIN, and a punktfunk1-host --source synthetic +
punktfunk-probe loopback run passes verification (60/60 frames, 0 mismatch).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 9814368c8c feat(host): enable GPU zero-copy by default on all backends
Now that the per-capture worker subprocess makes an NVENC EGL/CUDA driver
fault survivable (design/zerocopy-worker-isolation.md), the reason the NVENC
zero-copy path stayed opt-in is gone. zerocopy::enabled() now defaults ON for
both GPU backends (was ON VAAPI / OFF NVENC). Fallbacks are intact: VAAPI's
one-shot CPU auto-downgrade (VAAPI-gated, never trips for NVENC) and NVENC's
per-capture fallback + worker-death latch.

Reframe the shipped host.env examples and setup guides to rely on the default
rather than force PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY=1 (an explicit =1 skips the VAAPI
auto-downgrade).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 a2df43e766 docs(display-management): Stage 8 consolidation — docs page, README, CLAUDE.md, host.env
Bring the user-facing + project docs in line with the shipped, on-glass-validated state (Stages
0-5 §6A + keep-alive hardening + gaming-rig) ahead of a merge decision:

- docs-site/virtual-displays.md: drop the now-false "stored but not yet enforced / following
  release" caveats — conflict handling, per-client identity + KDE scaling round-trip, and §6A
  multi-monitor layout are all live; gaming-rig/forever ships (freed via Release); document the
  reconnect-always-resumes + deliberate-quit-skips-linger behavior and the PUNKTFUNK_IDLE_TIMEOUT_MS
  knob. KDE persistent scaling → today (validated); Windows primary → shipped; Sway exclusive
  stays "following release".
- README: a "displays you configure, not just create" differentiator bullet.
- CLAUDE.md: the display-management invariant now reflects Stages 0-5 shipped (all axes enforced,
  forever/Pinned, hardened reconnect) instead of "Stage 0 shipped".
- host.env.example: document PUNKTFUNK_IDLE_TIMEOUT_MS + that display policy lives in the console.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 7612238a59 feat(audio): end-to-end 5.1/7.1 surround across the native path + all clients
Adds negotiated 5.1/7.1 surround to the punktfunk/1 protocol and every client
(previously stereo-only):

- core: new shared `audio` layout table (LAYOUT_51/71 + identity multistream
  mapping, canonical wire order FL FR FC LFE RL RR SL SR); Hello/Welcome
  `audio_channels` negotiation via the trailing-byte back-compat pattern (old
  peers fall back to stereo); C-ABI `punktfunk_connect_ex6`,
  `punktfunk_connection_audio_channels`, and in-core multistream decode
  `punktfunk_connection_next_audio_pcm` for embedders without a multistream
  Opus decoder. Real-libopus channel-identity round-trip test.
- host: native audio thread captures + Opus-(multi)stream-encodes at the
  negotiated count (with a cross-session cached-capturer channel-mismatch fix);
  GameStream surround unified onto the safe `opus::MSEncoder`, dropping
  `audiopus_sys` (~4 unsafe blocks) and un-gating Windows GameStream surround;
  WASAPI loopback capture relaxed to 2/6/8 with the correct dwChannelMask.
- clients: Linux (PipeWire), Windows (WASAPI), Android (AAudio) decode via
  `opus::MSDecoder` + render multichannel; Apple decodes in-core to PCM →
  AVAudioEngine with an explicit wire-order channel layout; each gains a
  Stereo/5.1/7.1 setting. `punktfunk-probe --audio-channels N` is the headless
  validator.

Verified on Linux: core/host/linux/probe test suites + the Android Rust
(cargo-ndk) build, clippy -D warnings, and rustfmt all green. Windows/Apple
builds, all on-glass checks, and the live native loopback are pending (CI / a
free box).

Also lands the concurrent in-tree HEVC 4:4:4 host work (PUNKTFUNK_444): it
shares the same touched files (quic.rs, punktfunk1.rs, encode/*, ...) and so
cannot be committed separately from the surround changes.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 944fb9a5e0 feat(host/mgmt): HTTPS + token auth by default (no loopback no-auth fallback)
The mgmt API already always serves HTTPS (the host identity cert), but on a
loopback bind with no token it ran unauthenticated — any local process could
drive it. Make auth required ALWAYS:

- new mgmt_token::load_or_generate(): token precedence is --mgmt-token > env
  PUNKTFUNK_MGMT_TOKEN > persisted ~/.config/punktfunk/mgmt-token > freshly
  generated 32-byte hex, persisted 0600 in KEY=VALUE form (so the bundled web
  console can source it directly as a systemd EnvironmentFile — one source of
  truth). config_dir() made pub(crate).
- parse_serve() resolves the token via load_or_generate() when unset, so a bare
  `serve` Just Works with auth on and no operator step.
- mgmt::run() drops the loopback no-token exemption and requires a token;
  require_auth()'s unauthenticated fallback now returns 401. The paired-cert
  (mTLS) branch is unchanged — Apple client + library auth unaffected.
- web /api proxy: 503 (legible) instead of forwarding an empty bearer.
- tests: test_app/test_app_native default a token, send() auto-attaches the
  bearer; blank-token test asserts the new "no token" refusal. 80 pass.
- docs: mgmt module doc + host.env.example reflect always-on auth + auto-gen.

Compiles, clippy/fmt clean, openapi no drift. Part B (bundle the web console into
apt, auto-wired to this token) follows.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 ce8ac9755f feat(host/vdisplay): per-connect active-session backend selection
Bazzite/SteamOS boxes flip between Steam Gaming Mode (gamescope) and a
KDE/GNOME desktop. The host statically read PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR /
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP once, so switching to Desktop Mode failed the stream, and
the gamescope managed-session path stopped+relaunched the autologin per connect
— leaking GPU context on F44 (reconnect → black screen).

Replace the static read with a runtime probe of the live session and route each
connect to the right backend, churn-free:

- vdisplay::detect_active_session() probes /proc for the running compositor of
  our uid (gamescope|kwin_wayland|gnome-shell|sway, desktop outranks a leftover
  gamescope) + scans the runtime dir for the live wayland-* socket. Returns an
  ActiveKind + the SessionEnv (WAYLAND_DISPLAY/XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/DBUS/
  XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP) that targets it.
- apply_session_env() writes that into the process env per connect (host serves
  one session at a time), so every backend (capture + input) opens against the
  live session; apply_input_env() points input at the matching backend and
  selects gamescope ATTACH (no managed restart) unless PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_MANAGED.
- resolve_compositor() (native path) auto-detects + applies; explicit
  PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR still wins (legacy/CI/forcing). detect() is now
  active-aware for the GameStream/mgmt callers too.
- Bazzite host.env drops the static gamescope force; documents auto-detection
  + the optional overrides.

Result: Desktop Mode → KWin/Mutter virtual output at the client's mode
(churn-free, the reliable path); Gaming Mode → attach to the running gamescope
(no SIGSEGV/GPU leak on reconnect). Compiles + clippy-clean; 78 host tests pass.
Live validation on the Bazzite box pending (box offline).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 5ab3028b3f feat(host): host-managed gamescope session at the client's mode (dynamic res + refresh)
Nested games on the Bazzite host saw the wrong display: refresh capped at 60 Hz,
the box's connected TV's EDID modes leaking in (DOOM landed on 2560×1440@60), and
the resolution fixed at whatever the always-on session was launched at — the
client's requested mode never reached the game. Root causes: the session-plus
gamescope command has no --nested-refresh (Xwayland advertises 59.96 Hz for every
mode), --prefer-output HDMI-A-1 makes gamescope read the TV EDID, and the ATTACH
model launches one fixed-resolution session.

New vdisplay path: PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_SESSION=<client> — the host LAUNCHES
gamescope-session-plus headless AT THE CLIENT'S mode and relaunches it when the
mode changes. Injected via a host-written GAMESCOPE_BIN wrapper (--nested-refresh
$PF_HZ, the flag session-plus doesn't expose) + DRM_MODE=cvt (gamescope generates
clean CVT modes at that refresh instead of the TV's EDID). The session runs as a
transient `systemd-run --user` unit (clean cgroup teardown of the Steam tree);
state lives in a host-lifetime static (MANAGED_SESSION), NOT in GamescopeDisplay
(which is per-client-session) — so a same-mode reconnect REUSES the running
session instantly (no Steam restart) while a different mode RELAUNCHES it (games
can't change output mode live; a game/Steam restart on a mode change is
unavoidable and acceptable). Reuses the existing node + EIS auto-discovery
(find_gamescope_node / find_gamescope_eis_socket, factored into
point_injector_at_eis) and the existing mid-stream Reconfigure → vd.create(mode)
machinery — no protocol or m3 control-flow change.

Validated live on bazzite (RTX 4090): games' Xwayland now advertises 5120×1440 @
239.90 Hz as the preferred mode (was 59.96), the TV's 3840×2160/4096×2160@60 modes
are gone, frames stream; reconnect at 1920×1080@120 relaunches and games see that;
same-mode reconnect reuses with no restart and frames flow instantly.

scripts: host.env.example documents PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_SESSION (mutually exclusive
with the legacy NODE=auto attach); punktfunk-steam-session.service marked
deprecated (superseded — must not run alongside the host-managed path).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 8cceb93541 rename: lumen → punktfunk, everywhere
Full project rename, decided 2026-06-10:
- Crates/binaries: punktfunk-core / punktfunk-host / punktfunk-client-rs.
- C ABI: punktfunk_* symbols, Punktfunk* types, include/punktfunk_core.h,
  PUNKTFUNK_FEATURE_QUIC guard (header regenerated; cbindgen renames updated, incl.
  PUNKTFUNK_BTN_*/PUNKTFUNK_AXIS_* wire constants).
- Protocol: punktfunk/1 — control-plane magic LMN1 → PKF1, nonce salt lmn1 → pkf1.
  WIRE BREAK: clients must be rebuilt from this revision.
- Env knobs: PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE / PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR / PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY / ….
- Host config dir: ~/.config/punktfunk (the box's dir was migrated in place — the
  persistent identity is unchanged, pinned fingerprints stay valid).
- Swift package: PunktfunkKit + PunktfunkCore.xcframework + PunktfunkConnection
  (Sources/PunktfunkClient app + tests renamed with it); build-xcframework.sh updated.
- scripts/: 60-punktfunk.rules, punktfunk-host.service; OpenAPI doc regenerated.

Also: scripts/headless/run-headless-kde.sh — full headless Plasma bringup. Root cause of
"desktop but no apps/settings" over the stream: plasmashell launched without
XDG_MENU_PREFIX=plasma-, so the launcher resolved a nonexistent applications.menu and
rendered an empty menu. The script sets the complete KDE session env (menu prefix,
KDE_FULL_SESSION, session version) and rebuilds ksycoca before starting plasmashell.

Gate: 97/97 tests, clippy -D warnings (both feature sets), fmt, C-ABI harness PASS,
zero lumen references left outside .git.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 807e2ce83b feat: M2 — host productionization: app catalog, persistent pairing, quit semantics, systemd (Phase 4)
- gamestream/apps.rs: an app catalog (loaded from ~/.config/lumen/apps.json, with defaults:
  Desktop + gamescope entries when gamescope/steam/vkcube are installed). /applist renders
  it; /launch?appid=N selects the entry; RTSP PLAY resolves it and the stream honors the
  app's compositor + nested command — so a Moonlight client picks "Steam" and gets a
  gamescope session at its native resolution, or "Desktop" for the KWin/GNOME desktop.
- Persistent pairing: the paired-client cert allow-list now survives restarts
  (~/.config/lumen/paired.json), saved on each successful pairing, loaded at boot.
- Quit semantics: /cancel now actually stops the media threads (streaming/audio flags),
  tearing down the per-session virtual output / gamescope process via the capturer's RAII.
- scripts/lumen-host.service (systemd user unit) + scripts/host.env.example (config file
  consumed by it) — the host runs as a managed service instead of an SSH shell.

Smoke-tested: serve boots, /applist serves the catalog (Desktop + vkcube gamescope entry
auto-detected on this box). GNOME backend validation still pending gnome-shell install;
wlroots vdisplay backend deliberately deferred (not in the priority compositor trio).
