A LocalService principal could take over a virtual pad's shared input section and
forge HID input into the interactive desktop.

The host duplicates each pad's unnamed DATA section into the driver's WUDFHost, and
through gamepad proto v2 it learned that process from `driver_pid` in the named
bootstrap mailbox. That mailbox has to be LocalService-writable — that is what the
driver's own WUDFHost runs as — and the delivery gate, verify_is_wudfhost, only checks
that the target's IMAGE is %SystemRoot%\System32\WUDFHost.exe. That image is
world-executable. So anything running as LocalService — notably the deliberately
de-privileged plugin runner — could spawn its own WUDFHost (CREATE_SUSPENDED parks it
indefinitely with the right image path), publish that pid, and be handed
SECTION_MAP_READ|WRITE on a live section. For pf-mouse that section drives a real
absolute pointer, so it was desktop control; for the pads it was forged gamepad input
plus a read of the remote user's controller state.

The module docs claimed mailbox tampering "yields at worst a gamepad DoS, never a read
or an injection". That was wrong, and the reasoning behind it — that a LocalService
token is DACL-denied OpenProcess on a UMDF WUDFHost — only covers the REAL host, not
one the attacker spawned itself.

The pid now comes from the device stack (ChannelProof, proto 2 -> 3). The host asks the
devnode it SwDeviceCreate'd who is serving it, looked up by the instance id PnP handed
back, so a planted look-alike devnode is not a candidate and the kernel — not anything
the attacker supplies — does the routing. Only the driver PnP actually bound to that
device can answer. `driver_pid` survives as a liveness hint; a tamperer can still deny a
pad, which squatting the name always allowed, but can no longer choose the recipient.
Two rules keep the state machine honest around it: a delivery stands until its target
process EXITS (judged on a retained SYNCHRONIZE handle, so a recycled pid cannot fake
it, and UMDF's restart-after-driver-crash still re-attaches), and a pad with no
SwDeviceCreate devnode refuses to deliver rather than fall back — unless an operator
sets PUNKTFUNK_PAD_CHANNEL_TRUST_MAILBOX, which says so loudly.

Three transports, because Windows carries different things to different driver shapes,
and the obvious two did not survive contact with hidclass. Measured on .173 (Win11
26200): HidD_GetIndexedString is NOT forwarded to a UMDF HID minidriver at all — it
failed for every index including ones the driver demonstrably serves through the named
wrappers; and a private device interface registers and enumerates but cannot be OPENED
(ERROR_GEN_FAILURE), because hidclass owns IRP_MJ_CREATE on a devnode it is the FDO for.
That is exactly why pf-xusb was never affected: it is not a HID minidriver, so nothing
sits above it. What works:

  * pf-xusb   — a private IOCTL on its own GUID_DEVINTERFACE_XUSB.
  * pf-mouse  — the HID serial string. Verified: PFCP:3:0:7296, and 7296 was a genuine
service-spawned WUDFHost.exe. Safe here alone: nothing reads the virtual
                mouse's serial, whereas a pad's is SDL/Steam dedup material.
  * pf-gamepad — a HID feature report, and it cost NO report-descriptor change. The
captured descriptors already declare far more Feature ids than the driver
ever served: 0x85 is declared on DualSense, DualShock 4 and Edge alike and
used to fail with STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER, so hidclass lets it through and
nothing can have depended on the old failure. The Deck's one feature report
is unnumbered and Steam drives it command->response, so its proof rides that
existing contract via a private two-byte command. Verified: feature 0x85
                returned magic "PFCP", proto 3, pad_index 0, wudf_pid 18456 — and 18456 was
a WUDFHost — with the product string still 'DualSense Wireless Controller'.

Also renamed pf-dualsense -> pf-gamepad. One driver has always served four identities, so
the old name read as if the other three lived elsewhere. ONLY the package identity moved
(crate, INF/CAT/DLL, UMDF service, build script, CI lines, log file, env var). The four
HARDWARE IDS are deliberately unchanged — they bind every devnode the host creates and
every installed system — as are the Global\pfds-boot-<i> mailbox and PAD_MAGIC, which are
wire contract. `driver install --gamepad` now retires the pre-rename store package first,
matched on pf_dualsense.dll because that string appears only in the OLD inf; matching on
the hardware ids would delete what we are about to install. On .173 that separated 14
stale packages from the 1 new one with 0 ambiguous, and the renamed package binds the old
hwid (devgen root\pf_dualsense -> oem143.inf = pf_gamepad.inf).

The repo's own pre-commit/pre-push rustfmt hooks named the old crate, so they caught the
rename before the commit did — they now check pf-gamepad, and pf-mouse alongside it, which
they had been missing relative to the CI line.

Host and drivers MUST ship together: v2<->v3 fails closed in both directions by design,
with the existing "update host + drivers together" diagnostic.

The rename moved files that also carry the security change, so splitting this into two
commits would mean reconstructing an intermediate state that was never gated. It is one
commit on purpose.

Gated on the windows-amd64 runner with cargo clean first (the box's clock lags, so stale
artifacts would read as a vacuous green): clippy -D warnings clean for pf-inject,
pf-capture and pf-driver-proto, drivers workspace build + the CI clippy line clean,
cargo check --release -p punktfunk-host clean, 19 + 58 tests green. Also fixes pf-mouse
still writing its debug log to world-writable C:\Users\Public, which the 2026-07-17
review moved for the other three drivers and missed here.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 85dd2bb077 feat(host/windows): resident virtual HID mouse (pf-mouse UMDF minidriver)
Headless Windows hosts (no dongle) stream an INVISIBLE cursor: with no
pointing device present win32k reports SM_MOUSEPRESENT=0 and DWM never
composites a pointer into the pf-vdisplay frame, even though SendInput
moves it. Keep ONE virtual HID mouse devnode alive for the host's
lifetime — the Sunshine/Parsec-class fix, zero client changes.

- pf-mouse: UMDF2 HID minidriver, one fixed identity (PF:MO 5046:4D4F,
obviously virtual, nothing fingerprints it), one 8-byte input report
  (5 buttons + absolute 15-bit X/Y + wheel + AC-pan). Transport is the
sealed pad channel verbatim (Global\pfmouse-boot-0 mailbox + unnamed
MouseShm DATA section) so pf-umdf-util's audited layer serves it
unchanged; report delivery is event-driven (idle = no HID traffic).
- host: inject::mouse_windows — VirtualMouse (SwDeviceCreate'd devnode +
channel), ensure_resident() keeper thread started by every
  InjectorService (process-wide, PUNKTFUNK_NO_VIRTUAL_MOUSE opts out),
vmouse-spike on-glass validation (cursor sweep via HID reports).
- proto: mouse module (magic, boot-name, identity, report layout,
  unit-tested input_report packing).
- SwDeviceProfile grows container_tag so the mouse's ContainerId family
(PFMO) never groups with a pad's (PFDS) in the Devices UI.
- packaging: pf-mouse rides the gamepad-driver build + install pipeline
  (build-gamepad-drivers.ps1, windows-drivers.yml, driver install
--gamepad picks up every staged .inf).

On-glass validated on winbox: devnode + HID child bind, SM_MOUSEPRESENT=1
with no physical mouse, cursor sweeps via HID reports (vmouse-spike).

This work was implemented in a parallel session; committed here as the
build prerequisite for the HID compose kick that follows.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 e707a962b6 fix(security): anti-replay, 0600 client key, open redirect, supply-chain
Address findings from a repo security review:

- core: add a sliding-window anti-replay filter over the AEAD-authenticated
sequence in Session (poll_input/poll_frame), closing the input-replay gap the
data plane previously left to the LAN/VPN trust assumption. 4096-deep window,
unit-tested; the encrypted loopback suite confirms no false drops.
- clients: write the mTLS client private key 0600 and lock the config dir 0700
on Unix (it was world-readable at the umask default), re-locking existing
stores on load. pf-client-core::trust plus the probe's own identity writer.
Windows keeps the %APPDATA% ACL; Android/Apple already wrap the key.
- web: fix a post-login open redirect — resolve `next` via URL and require it to
stay same-origin, rejecting `/\evil.com` and tab/encoding variants the old
`!startsWith("//")` guard missed. Also fixes the dead safeNextPath helper.
- ci: SHA-256-pin the BtbN FFmpeg DLLs bundled into the signed Windows installer
(were fetched from the rolling `latest` tag unverified); fails closed on a
  re-roll, matching the VB-CABLE gate.
- ci: fail-open fork-guard on the Windows/Apple host-mode PR build jobs that
share runner labels with the signing jobs. Definitive fix stays server-side
(Gitea outside-collaborator approval / isolated PR runners) — see the notes.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 8b47be668f feat(host/windows): seal the host↔driver channels (frame + gamepad, proto v2)
Frame ring (pf-vdisplay) and both gamepad SHM channels move off named Global\
objects (openable by any sibling LocalService) to UNNAMED sections/events whose
handles the host DuplicateHandles into the driver's verified WUDFHost with least
access — frame delivery over the SYSTEM+admins-only IOCTL_SET_FRAME_CHANNEL,
pads over a 32-byte named bootstrap mailbox (pid + handle value only, DoS-bounded;
HID minidrivers have no control device). Driver-validated pad_index kills
cross-pad redirects; v1↔v2 mixes fail closed with diagnosis logs on both sides.
Sibling-LocalService denial proven empirically (design/idd-push-security.md,
design/gamepad-channel-sealing.md).

Driver-side raw ops now live behind pf-umdf-util (checked shm accessors, the
forbid(unsafe_code) ChannelClient state machine, WDF request tokens) — the pad
drivers' logic is 100% safe Rust; whole drivers workspace clippy-gated in CI.

driver install --gamepad now sweeps SWD\punktfunk phantom devnodes: a re-created
SwDevice REVIVES the old devnode with its previously-bound driver (never
re-ranks), so an upgrade otherwise leaves the old driver serving — or, across
the v1→v2 fence, a dead pad (found live on the RTX box).

On-glass validated on the RTX 4090 box: frame path 7007 frames p50 2.06 ms
cross-machine; DualSense + XUSB "sealed pad channel mapped"/proto=2 attach via
both the test harness and a real streaming session; phantom-sweep repro.

enricobuehlerandClaude Sonnet 5 9eebadff2a feat(windows-ci): self-provisioning toolchain for the shared unom/infra runner
The Windows CI runner (home-windows-runner-1, vmid 210) is now provisioned/owned by
unom/infra and can be rebuilt or joined by additional windows-amd64-labeled runners at
any time - a manually-dispatched provisioning workflow has no way to target a specific
runner instance, so it could land on an already-provisioned box instead of the one that
needed it. Replace windows-drivers-provision.yml / windows-punktfunk-provision.yml with
scripts/ci/ensure-windows-toolchain.ps1, a shared idempotent pre-flight (WDK/cargo-wdk,
FFmpeg, Inno Setup, ARM64 rustup target) that every Windows workflow now runs at job
start - a fast no-op once already provisioned, so any runner self-heals on first real use.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 b2acebdf58 chore(windows): clean up build/packaging - drop vendored driver binaries + the LLVM-21 pin
Now that the drivers build from source in CI, remove the dead checked-in binaries and
the toolchain cruft they left behind:

- Delete packaging/windows/{pf-vdisplay,gamepad-drivers}/ (the prebuilt .dll/.inf/.cat/.cer).
pack-host-installer.ps1 builds + signs all three drivers from the drivers/ workspace and
nothing reads the vendored dirs anymore; stage-pf-vdisplay.ps1's -VendorDir is now a
mandatory build-output path, not a vendored default.
- Drop the LLVM-21 pin. The vendored bindgen 0.71->0.72 bump (the shipping pack already
builds green on the runner-default clang 22) retired the bindgen-0.71 layout-test overflow
that needed LLVM 21.1.2, so windows-drivers.yml + provision-windows-wdk.ps1 no longer
install/point at C:\llvm-21 (~898 MB off a fresh provision) - both driver builds now use one
  toolchain (clang 22 + bindgen 0.72).
- pack -SkipBuild on the gamepad build (build-pf-vdisplay.ps1 already builds the whole
workspace), build-web.ps1 reaps a stale node too, deploy-dev.ps1 nefconc path + comments.
- Reword the vendored-driver references (build scripts, .iss, READMEs, the vite web-bundle
  comment) to the build-from-source reality.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 0925f1aaa1 fix: complete the docs/→design/ and openapi→api/ rename references
The file moves (docs/ → design/, docs/api/openapi.json → api/openapi.json) landed
in 8897286, but the matching reference updates did not — so mgmt.rs's drift-test
`include_str!("../../../docs/api/openapi.json")` pointed at a path that no longer
exists and the host failed to build. This restores it and updates every reference:

  - mgmt.rs include_str! → ../../../api/openapi.json (fixes the build)
  - web/orval.config.ts codegen target, web/Dockerfile, .dockerignore
  - deb/rpm/Arch packaging install paths
  - CLAUDE.md, the .gitea CI workflows, code doc-comments, design-doc cross-links

docs-site route URLs (/docs/...) untouched.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 764c814483 refactor: rename pf-vdisplay-proto -> pf-driver-proto (it spans all drivers)
The shared host<->driver ABI crate already contains more than the virtual
display: the IDD-push frame ring + control plane AND the gamepad shared-memory
layouts (XusbShm / PadShm). "pf-vdisplay-proto" was a misnomer — the name now
represents all the drivers it serves.

Mechanical rename, no behavior change:
- git mv crates/pf-vdisplay-proto -> crates/pf-driver-proto (package name +
path-deps in the host crate and the driver workspace).
- pf_vdisplay_proto -> pf_driver_proto across host + driver Rust, both Cargo.lock
files, the workspace members, the CI path triggers (windows-drivers.yml), and
the docs/INF comments. The runtime Global\pfvd-* shared-object names are a
SEPARATE contract and are deliberately untouched (host<->driver name matching).
- The pf-vdisplay DRIVER crate + its INF service name (Root\pf_vdisplay,
UmdfService=pf_vdisplay, pf_vdisplay.dll) are unchanged — only the full
`pf_vdisplay_proto` token was replaced, never the `pf_vdisplay` driver name.

Linux-verified: cargo test -p pf-driver-proto (const size-asserts compile) +
cargo clippy -p punktfunk-host -D warnings clean; Cargo.lock regenerated. The
driver-workspace side (path-dep + imports + its Cargo.lock) is Windows-CI-gated.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 33a7ee165b fix(windows-drivers): size_of config size (1.0 IddCxStub lacks the version table) + CI builds pf-vdisplay
The versioned IDD_STRUCTURE_SIZE path referenced IddClientVersionHigherThanFramework/
IddStructureCount/IddStructures — LNK2019 unresolved, because the WDK links the iddcx
1.0 IddCxStub which lacks those (they are >=1.4). We target 1.10 against a current
framework (higher==false) where size_of is exactly the versioned result, so use it
directly (the surface-assert refs linked only because they were DCE-eliminated).
pf-vdisplay now COMPILES + LINKS IddCxStub on the box (263,680B). Point
windows-drivers.yml at the whole workspace + clear FORCE_INTEGRITY on pf_vdisplay.dll;
drop the obsolete UINT diagnostic dump.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 304a374325 ci(windows-drivers): dump generated iddcx.rs structure on failure (diagnostic)
UINT fails to resolve despite a top-level `pub type UINT` in the same scope as the
working `use crate::types::*` — error count byte-identical before/after the fix.
Add an if:always() step dumping the generated module structure + UINT-use context
to pinpoint the scope mismatch (RTX box rebooted to Proxmox, so CI is the only
validator).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 19ca676549 feat(windows-drivers): clear FORCE_INTEGRITY for self-signed driver load (M0)
wdk-build links UMDF drivers with /INTEGRITYCHECK unconditionally (no opt-out),
so the self-signed DLL would be refused by Code Integrity (3004/3089). Add a
deterministic, idempotent, reusable packaging step
(packaging/windows/clear-force-integrity.ps1) that clears the PE
IMAGE_DLLCHARACTERISTICS_FORCE_INTEGRITY bit (0x0080 @ e_lfanew+0x5e) and verifies
— the gamepad recipe, no longer hand-run. driver-build now inspects the bit
(before) then clears+verifies it. Real drivers will: build -> clear -> sign .dll
-> Inf2Cat -> sign .cat.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 4ad084ab50 ci(windows-drivers): LLVM via portable tar.xz + self-provision driver-build
The LLVM NSIS .exe /S silent install HANGS in the headless SYSTEM CI session
(stuck >15min after download, blocking the single runner). Switch to the portable
clang+llvm-21.1.2-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.tar.xz (curl + Win11 tar -xf, strip 1) —
deterministic, no installer. And make driver-build run the provision script itself
(idempotent) so it self-provisions LLVM and never races a separate provision run.

Use the provisioned C:\\llvm-21 libclang for the driver build so wdk-sys bindgen
builds clean (the runner default LLVM is a ToT/22-dev with the E0080 layout-test
overflow bug). Queues behind the in-progress LLVM provision on the single runner.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 ce7367bff2 ci(windows-drivers): static-CRT .cargo/config (fixes StaticCrtNotEnabled)
wdk-build errored StaticCrtNotEnabled + the generated wdk-sys layout asserts
overflowed (E0080) — UMDF needs the static CRT. Add the canonical
windows-drivers-rs .cargo/config.toml: explicit target = x86_64-pc-windows-msvc
(separates host proc-macros, which stay dynamic-CRT, from the driver) +
target-feature=+crt-static scoped to that target. DLL now under the triple subdir.

The WDK bindgen itself now runs (it generated out/types.rs) — this is the last
build-config layer before the /INTEGRITYCHECK verdict.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 1ce5281114 ci(windows-drivers): in-tree target dir for driver-build (find the lock)
wdk-build find_top_level_cargo_manifest() walks UP from OUT_DIR to the first
ancestor with a Cargo.lock; the relocated CARGO_TARGET_DIR=C:\\t\\drvws hid the
workspace lock (ancestors C:\\t, C:\\ have none) -> the "Cargo.lock should exist"

in-tree target stays under MAX_PATH.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 d6250e6ba8 feat(windows-drivers): driver workspace + wdk-probe on windows-drivers-rs (M1)
Stand up packaging/windows/drivers/ — the unified driver workspace on crates.io
windows-drivers-rs (wdk 0.4.1 / wdk-sys + wdk-build 0.5.1), retiring the dev-box
../../crates/wdk* path-deps. First member: wdk-probe, the smallest UMDF2 driver
(DriverEntry -> WdfDriverCreate -> EvtDeviceAdd -> WdfDeviceCreate) that
force-links the shared pf-vdisplay-proto ABI crate. It validates on the runner:
wdk-sys bindgen + WDF stub link against the WDK + LLVM, the cross-workspace
no_std proto path-dep, and the produced DLL's PE FORCE_INTEGRITY bit.

windows-drivers.yml gains a driver-build job: cargo build -p wdk-probe (pinning
Version_Number=10.0.26100.0) + a PE inspection that prints whether /INTEGRITYCHECK
is set — the M0 self-signed-load question.

iddcx versions, inf2cat/stampinf/devgen/signtool, EWDK, LLVM/clang version,
