~1150 feat/fix commits landed since v0.19 and the docs drifted badly. This is a full sweep of every page against the code as shipped: ~280 verified corrections, nine new pages, and one deletion. The worst of what was wrong: the quickstart's five-minute path could not work (`serve` never started the web console, so step 3 had no PIN to read); every packaged Linux host runs `serve --gamestream` while security.md told readers to leave GameStream off; HDR was documented as Windows-only; `PUNKTFUNK_SECURE_DDA` was documented as a working knob that nothing reads; `PUNKTFUNK_INPUT_BACKEND` listed a `uinput` value that does not exist and named libei for KDE instead of kwin; README linked three pages deleted on 2026-07-05; and the rpm-ostree update command pointed at a script no package installs. Completeness: about half of what shipped since v0.19 had no page at all. New: support-matrix (what works where, from 217 verified capability cells), input (mouse/touch/pen — and the in-stream chords, so the docs finally say how to get your mouse back), client-settings, profiles-and-links, game-library, clipboard, wake-on-lan, hdr, uninstall. Updating existed but had zero inbound links. status.md is gone: its facts moved into the support matrix, its shell stays as a redirect so the public URL does not 404. roadmap.md is themes now, not a feature checklist — checkboxes are what rotted. Debian is no longer claimed. The .deb's Depends resolve against Ubuntu images, nothing in CI builds or tests Debian, and Debian 12 is below the glibc 2.39 floor. The `debian` in the repo URL is the package format. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

Field report (RX 5700 / SteamOS): 10-bit HEVC "unsupported" — but the GPU was
never the blocker (RADV probed Main10 fine on that box). The session stayed SDR
because stock gamescope offers no 10-bit PQ capture formats and nothing shipped
our pipewire-hdr build outside the Bazzite sysext, while PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR
additionally defaulted off everywhere. Close all three gaps:
- PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_HDR now defaults ON (explicit-off grammar, the flip the
config comment planned post-canary). Safe by construction: the +pfhdr banner
probe, managed-spawn term, and client 10-bit cap keep stock-gamescope boxes on
the exact 8-bit path. The nix module's gamescopeHdr (default true now) only
controls whether the patched binary is on PATH; it no longer sets the env.
- SteamOS: new scripts/steamdeck/build-gamescope.sh builds the HDR gamescope in
the same pf2 trixie distrobox (apt dep list validated by a full build in a
debian:trixie container), installs ~/.local/bin/punktfunk-gamescope, and
maintains PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_BIN in host.env ONLY while the binary passes its
on-glass --version/+pfhdr check — a stale absolute override would break
session spawning, not just HDR. Wired into install.sh (§3b), update.sh
(retrofit), and rebuild-check.sh (ldd-probes it like the host binary).
- Arch: build-sysext.sh gains a --gamescope fold-in (banner-verified by
execution, host-image-only), and punktfunk-host optdepends the companion.
Deliberately NO CI-published host sysext: per the 2026-07-22 packaging
verdict a prebuilt SteamOS host breaks on A/B soname bumps (and /var is
per-partition-set), so arch.yml records that instead — SteamOS hosts use the
distrobox flow above.
Also fixes a latent bug that made build-sysext.sh fail every invocation as
documented: a literal `}` inside `${1:?usage …{host,client}…}` terminates the
expansion early and corrupts $PKG (caught by the new synthetic-package test,
which also covers the fold-in, the unmarked-gamescope refusal, and the
client-image guard).

docs: the gamescope path is no longer 8-bit-only
Five pages asserted "gamescope's capture output is 8-bit" as a flat fact. It is a fact about the STOCK binary, so say that instead, and say what to install to change it: a new "HDR on gamescope" section covering the extra package, the two knobs, what has to line up for a session to go HDR at all, and the two things that surprise people — SDR content rides the same PQ stream at `--hdr-sdr-content-nits`, and AMD/Intel HDR sessions currently lose the composited pointer (the encode path that carries 10-bit is the one that cannot blend it). The roadmap's "parked / blocked" entry keeps the half that is still blocked (Mutter's `RecordVirtual` is SDR-only through the GNOME 51 dev branch) and drops the half that no longer is. |

fix(vdisplay/gamescope): DM-flavor-aware session takeover — stop masking Nobara's plasmalogin to death
Field report (Nobara 43 HTPC): switching the host to Steam Game Mode mid-stream permanently black-screened the box. Live-proven root cause on a Nobara repro VM: our takeover masks the box's gamescope-session-plus unit, plasmalogin's Relogin=true then fails its session Exec repeatedly and trips systemd's start limit within ~1 s — the display manager dies, and our restore verb (unmask + user start) cannot bring a seatless gamescope back. Only 'reset-failed + restart' of the DM recovers. The takeover is now display-manager-flavor-aware: - SDDM (Bazzite/SteamOS) keeps the proven mask+SIGKILL path unchanged. - plasmalogin/unknown DMs never mask: with privilege (root or an operator polkit rule scoped to the DM unit — documented) the host stops the DM for the stream and restores it with reset-failed + restart (PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD as fallback), recorded in the persisted takeover state so a host crash still restores; without privilege the managed takeover degrades to ATTACH and mirrors the box's live Game Mode instead of destabilizing the seat. Both legs of the privileged cycle live-verified on the repro VM (headless managed session works with zero login sessions; render nodes are 0666). A loaded-but-inactive leftover instance never triggers the DM stop. Companion fixes from the same triage: - ensure_box_gamescope_mode gains the attach-only rebuild-probe guard both managed paths already had (stale post-capture-loss detection restarted the box's unit), and no longer re-modes a box that drives a physical display — attach mirrors on-glass; re-mode is the headless-box model. - Capture-loss rebuilds targeting gamescope get a 100 s budget: the 40 s budget expired inside the first 45 s Steam-cold-start launch attempt, a guaranteed single-shot failure. - A PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR pin now WARNs once per capture loss when the live session no longer matches it (the pin disables session-following — the reporter's original stream-death trigger). - A managed session that took nothing over (client gamescope pin beside a live desktop) is stopped on disconnect instead of being orphaned forever. Field triage (Nobara, Discord): the kde.md starter host.env told desktop users to set PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=kwin, which PINS the backend — detect() short-circuits and the capture-loss rebuild never re-detects — so a mid-stream switch to Game Mode killed the stream instead of following it. A follow-up hardcoded XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 anchor broke PipeWire for any non-1000 uid (pw audio connect: Creation failed). Revamp across every starter/example/reference: - Desktop starters (kde/gnome/hyprland/sway) shrink to PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE=virtual + an explicit warning that pinning disables session-following; forcing a backend is CI/appliance-only. - host.env.example: rewritten around auto-detection; anchors demoted to a commented ssh/cron-only block with the uid trap spelled out; the gamescope ATTACH/MANAGED knobs documented (previously missing); case-sensitivity called out. - packaging/bazzite/host.env + README: drop the uid-1000 anchors (a systemctl --user service inherits/derives them); README's stale PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=gamescope-era template synced to the real one. - packaging/kde/host.env: loud APPLIANCE-ONLY header (it pins on purpose). - configuration.md: session-anchors section inverted to "leave unset", compositor row states the pin consequence, case-sensitivity note. - troubleshooting.md: new "session fails right after editing host.env" section (case, wrong-uid anchors, stale pin, restart-to-apply). - gamescope.md/bazzite.md: attach/managed descriptions match current behavior (managed is the infra-detected default; attach re-modes a box-owned session to the client's resolution). feat(host): enable GPU zero-copy by default on all backends
Now that the per-capture worker subprocess makes an NVENC EGL/CUDA driver fault survivable (design/zerocopy-worker-isolation.md), the reason the NVENC zero-copy path stayed opt-in is gone. zerocopy::enabled() now defaults ON for both GPU backends (was ON VAAPI / OFF NVENC). Fallbacks are intact: VAAPI's one-shot CPU auto-downgrade (VAAPI-gated, never trips for NVENC) and NVENC's per-capture fallback + worker-death latch. Reframe the shipped host.env examples and setup guides to rely on the default rather than force PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY=1 (an explicit =1 skips the VAAPI auto-downgrade). docs: restructure host setup by distro, configuration by compositor
Split the docs' single distro×desktop axis (ubuntu-gnome / ubuntu-kde / fedora-kde) into two,
which deduplicates the shared mechanics and scales to distros that run several desktops (Arch):
- Install the host — per distro/OS (ubuntu, fedora, arch, bazzite, steamos-host, windows-host):
GPU driver + package + input group, then a canonical "Configure your desktop" funnel.
- Configure your desktop — per compositor (kde, gnome, gamescope, sway): host.env, compositor
quirks, the headless session, and starting the host.
New shared web-console page (enable · login password · arm pairing) removes the console/password
block that was copy-pasted across all seven host pages. Merged ubuntu-gnome + ubuntu-kde into
ubuntu; renamed fedora-kde to fedora; kept bazzite and steamos-host as dedicated appliance guides
(trimmed of duplication). Moved the KWin headless session, the GNOME EGL/lock traps, and the
gamescope attach/managed model out of the distro pages onto their compositor pages.
Fixed while restructuring: distro-specific paths on kde (kde-desktop-setup.sh is Fedora/Bazzite-only;
the .deb ships host.env.kde under /usr/share/punktfunk-host), the interactive "start the host" step
that was lost in the merge, sway over-claiming Hyprland, and a pre-existing broken anchor in
how-it-works.
Removal of the three old pages was captured by the preceding commit

feat(packaging/bazzite): systemd-sysext replaces rpm-ostree layering as the primary install path
Layering is a last resort per the Bazzite docs (slows every OS update, can block upgrades until removed); a sysext never enters an rpm-ostree transaction, survives OS updates, and installs/updates with no reboot — the mechanism Fedora Atomic ships via fedora-sysexts. - build-sysext.sh wraps the built host+web RPMs into punktfunk-<V-R>-x86-64.raw: /etc payload relocated to /usr/share/punktfunk/etc (a sysext carries only /usr), the punktfunk-sysext helper embedded, ID=fedora + VERSION_ID pinned (merges on Bazzite via ID_LIKE; REFUSED after a major rebase instead of running soname-broken binaries — both behaviors validated live on Bazzite 43). SELinux labels are baked in as squashfs pseudo-xattrs from matchpathcon: unlabeled files run fine for user units but system daemons are DENIED (udev couldn't read the gamepad rule under enforcing) — validated on-glass. Refuses duplicate input package names (a stale noarch punktfunk-web next to the x86_64 one built a chimera image with the dead node launcher once). - punktfunk-sysext.sh: install/update/status/remove against per-Fedora-major feeds (…/generic/punktfunk-sysext/f43[-canary]), SHA-256-verified, applies the udev/sysctl scriptlet work + /etc copies, prints the layering-migration hint. Live-validated on the .41 Bazzite box incl. service restart + web console. - publish-sysext-feed.sh + rpm.yml: build + publish the image per matrix leg (fedver 43/44), canary feeds pruned to 6, stable release assets attached. - update-punktfunk.sh warns when the sysext shadows a layered install. fix(packaging/windows): Windows 11 22H2 floor + tray install task + stale console-port fixes
The OS floor is now enforced at install time (MinVersion=10.0.22621 with an explanatory [Messages] override): pf-vdisplay is built against IddCx 1.10, and on Windows 10 (incl. LTSC) / Win11 21H2 the device fails start with Code 10 STATUS_DEVICE_POWER_FAILURE (field-reported). Docs (site requirements/install/ windows-host pages + README) state the floor; new docs-site Security page. Installer also gains the trayicon task (punktfunk-tray.exe file + HKLM Run key, post-install launch as the signed-in user, upgrade taskkill + uninstall --quit/taskkill choreography before file deletion), and the wizard/cleanup text/port sweeps move off the stale :3000 web-console references to :47992 (cleanups sweep both for upgrades from old installs). docs: full env/config reference + fix outdated Bazzite gamescope-only framing
Rebuild configuration.md into a complete PUNKTFUNK_* reference (verified against config.rs, the host.env templates, and the env read sites): core, gamescope/session-following, compositor, video quality, gamepads, audio, Windows host, auth/paths, perf tuning, diagnostics, and client-side knobs. Rework bazzite.md: it now documents both Steam Gaming Mode (gamescope) and the KDE Plasma desktop with auto-detect/session-following, attach vs managed, and the Desktop screencast + kde-desktop-setup.sh input grant — previously it only described the managed gamescope model. feat(web): consolidate paired devices, self-contained sections, docs + lint
Web console - Pairing/Library/Stats refactored into self-contained subsections that each own their own queries + mutations; a shared slot-based layout (view.tsx) is filled by the live page (containers) and Storybook (pure cards + fixtures) so the layout can't drift. - All paired devices in one list on Pairing with a protocol column (punktfunk/1 + Moonlight), routing each unpair to the right endpoint; the redundant Clients page is removed. - Library: overview grid split from the add/edit form into separate files. - Login screen links out to the docs. Docs - "Console login password" section on every host page (apt/RPM/Bazzite/SteamOS/Windows) plus a new "Forgot your Password?" troubleshooting page, linked from the login screen. - Console served as HTTP/1.1 over TLS (drop the unusable HTTP/3 advertising) across the Bun entry, launchers, systemd units, and packaging. Tooling - Biome now respects .gitignore (stops linting generated code), config migrated to 2.5.1; all lint issues fixed cleanly. Also includes this branch's in-progress host, Apple client, packaging, and CI changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(rpm): enable gpgcheck=1 — packages are signed + verified
The signing rollout is confirmed end to end: the latest published RPM (0.2.0-0.ci1089) carries a header GPG signature (added by `rpm --addsign`) and passed the in-CI `rpmkeys --checksig` self-verify before publishing (a bad/unsigned build fails that gate and never reaches the registry). So flip every .repo snippet from gpgcheck=0 to gpgcheck=1 and add the package-signing public key (served from the generic registry, committed at packaging/rpm/RPM-GPG-KEY-punktfunk) to gpgkey= alongside the Gitea metadata key — dnf/rpm-ostree imports both. Covers rpm/README, packaging/README, the bootc Containerfile, and the docs-site bazzite/fedora-kde install pages; rpm/README's signing section reframed from "dormant/enabling" to active (+ key-rotation notes). docs(dist): end-user install front door + serve/pairing/firewall accuracy fixes
Make the host docs match the real distribution path and the actual CLI. Reviewed by a multi-agent pass (6 editors against one verified fact sheet + an accuracy reviewer); its findings (a wrong client-Recommends claim, a native-concurrency overstatement) folded in. - Install front door: new README "Install (host)" method-picker + docs-site/install.md (+ nav), routing each distro to its package registry; source build demoted to a fallback. - Registry-first install: ubuntu-gnome/ubuntu-kde now lead with the apt registry (not a cargo build); bazzite leads with the Gitea RPM registry (was COPR/source). Source builds moved to an appendix. - CLI accuracy: serve --native arms pairing from the web console (NOT --allow-pairing, which with --require-pairing/--max-concurrent is m3-host-only); --open disables mandatory pairing. host-cli/configuration/pairing/quickstart/troubleshooting corrected; mgmt API documented as always HTTPS+token. Native host serves one session at a time (extras queue) — not multi. - Firewall: real ports documented (native UDP 9777 + the ephemeral data port caveat + GameStream ports) for Debian + Arch (ufw + nftables), not just Bazzite. - Sync/accuracy: punktfunk-client (GTK4) presented as a shipping client (not "roadmap"), punktfunk-client-rs as the headless tool; host Recommends punktfunk-web only (not the client); COPR chroots f43/44; bootc header says Gitea registry not COPR. docs: user-facing docs revamp — structured product docs + per-platform setup
Replace the dev/agent-log pages with a proper user-facing doc set: - Getting Started: Introduction (rewritten), How It Works, Quick Start. - Host Setup: Requirements, then clean per-platform guides — Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu KDE, Fedora KDE (new), Bazzite (rewritten) — plus Running as a Service (desktop / headless GNOME / headless KDE). - Connecting: Clients overview, Moonlight, Pairing & Trust. - Configuration: host.env reference, Host CLI, Troubleshooting. - The dev/design notes (architecture, roadmap, the deferred design specs, CI) move to a clearly-separated "Project & Internals" nav section. Removes the superseded box-specific pages (gnome-box, headless-box, linux-setup, overview). status.md (the internal progress tracker, with box IPs) is kept as a file but dropped from the public nav. Site builds clean. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

docs(site): make docs-site the knowledge base — status tracker + setup guides
Per the new docs workflow (docs-site = KB layer; repo docs/ keeps design notes): - Add a canonical Status & Progress tracker (status.md): milestones, per-box live state, and a dated progress log — the go-forward place to track progress. - Add setup guides: GNOME/Mutter host (gnome-box — Secure Boot MOK enroll, the libnvidia-gl EGL fix, autologin, screen-lock disable, appliance unit), headless KDE box, and Bazzite host (ujust input group, gamescope session, gotchas). - Roadmap is now canonical in docs-site (synced the skew-handshake section 12 update); removed the repo docs/roadmap.md copy and repointed README to docs-site. - Nav (meta.json) + landing cards updated; site builds (bun run build).
