On a Deck in Gaming Mode the Steam menu and the QAM are driven by the SAME
physical controller the client forwards, so opening either one moved the game
on the host as well as Steam's UI — a second, invisible player. Steam Input
masks a normal game here; it cannot mask us, because masking happens on Steam
Input's virtual pad and we deliberately forward the REAL one (28DE:1205 — the
virtual pad has no gyro, trackpads or paddles).

SDL ships the exact behaviour we want and it is on by default: presses are
dropped while the process has windows but no keyboard focus, releases still get
through. It CANNOT fire on a Deck. gamescope resolves focus per Xwayland ctx
and the client sits alone in its own, so the Steam overlay — which lives in the
root ctx — never takes our X focus away and no FocusOut is ever generated.
Measured on glass: with the QAM open, X input focus inside the client's ctx
stayed on its window for the whole 4 s, while GAMESCOPE_FOCUSED_APP flipped to
769 (Steam) and GAMESCOPE_FOCUSED_APP_GFX stayed on the app.

So the signal is explicit. `overlay_focus` watches those two atoms on the
gamescope root ctx — which is NOT our own $DISPLAY under `--xwayland-count 2`,
hence the socket-directory walk and the flatpak filesystem line — and the
presenter ORs it with window focus into one `set_masked`.

Masking is deliberately not `set_forwarding`: that closes the slot and sends
GamepadRemove, so the game would see a controller UNPLUG every time somebody
opened the QAM. This keeps every slot open and only stops the transitions,
after flushing what the host believes is held so a stick deflected at
overlay-open stops steering instead of freezing at its last value. On the way
back, held buttons are adopted rather than replayed — the A that picked a QAM
row must not fire in the game as it closes — while axes are re-sent, since a
stick has no press to ghost and SDL only speaks on change.

Fails open throughout: no gamescope, no X, or an unreadable signal all leave
forwarding exactly as it was. `PUNKTFUNK_OVERLAY_MASK=0` opts out.

enricobuehler 5c4969fd6b fix(client/pads): the gyro cut-off asked about the session, not the pad
Supersedes the check 77797a9e shipped an hour ago. The suppression, the
log-once, and the "unknown must not suppress" rule all stand; the field it reads
does not.

77797a9e read `Welcome.gamepad` — the backend the host resolved for the SESSION
— and stopped sending motion when it had no motion plane. But the host does not
build pads from that. It builds each virtual device from that pad's own
`GamepadArrival` (`Pads::set_kind`) and falls back to the session default only
for a pad that never declares one, which is precisely why `declared_kind` exists
and why its doc comment says an explicit setting has to be re-declared per pad.

So the check had a false negative, and it is an ordinary living-room setup. Under
"Automatic" the Hello carries the ACTIVE pad's kind (`auto_pref`), so a couch
with an X-Box pad on slot 0 and a DualSense on slot 1 echoes Xbox360 — while the
host, reading pad 1's arrival, builds it a DualSense with a working motion plane.
The old check read the echo, saw no motion plane, and killed pad 1's gyro. That
is the exact failure 77797a9e's own commit message names as the worse of the two
("a false negative kills working motion"), introduced by the fix for the other
one.

The question is per pad, so the slot now carries what it declared, beside the
physical `pref` it already held. The two are deliberately separate fields
answering different questions: `pref` is the controller in the user's hands, which
is what the local feedback paths must keep reading, and `declared` is the one the
host is pretending to have.

Three facts decide the predicate, and they are written out in
`pad_motion_reaches` rather than at the call site because all three clients need
the same reasoning:

- the echo is not this pad's answer when the pad declared something else;
- the host FOLDS what it cannot build — a Switch Pro on Windows, any UHID backend
  on a host whose /dev/uhid is unusable — and nothing client-side can predict it;
- but the echo IS one observed sample of that fold, for the kind the Hello asked
  about, so it is authoritative for a pad that declared exactly that.

Hence: trust the echo when declared == asked, else fall back to the declaration.
That keeps both motivating cases — a generic pad under Automatic (declares X-Box
360, suppressed, the sweep's H5c) and an explicit Switch Pro folded to X-Box 360
by a Windows host (declared == asked, so the echo catches it, H5d) — where either
field alone gets one of them wrong. `requested_gamepad` is kept on the client
next to `resolved_gamepad` for this: the pair is what makes the echo usable per
pad, and a lone field would only tempt the next reader back into the session-level
question.

The residual gap is a pad whose declared kind differs from the session's AND gets
folded: we keep sending and the host keeps dropping. That is the direction to be
wrong in, and it is what the session-level check was worth in the first place —
wasted datagrams, not a dead gyro.

Non-vacuity proven both directions rather than assumed. Reverting to
`resolved.has_motion()` fails on the mixed-pad row; reverting to
`declared.has_motion()` (no echo at all) fails on the Switch-Pro-on-Windows row.
Each case in the table is a session someone can actually sit down to, and the
comment on each says which of the three inputs decides it.

Gate (Linux CI image, pf-lxcheck2): fmt, `build -p punktfunk-core`, `build -p
pf-client-core`, `clippy --locked --all-targets -D warnings`, and both test
suites — green, with the new case observed in the run's own `... ok` line rather
than inferred from a green gate, and pf-client-core's 163 unchanged.

enricobuehler 77797a9e20 feat(client/pads): stop streaming gyro into a session that cannot receive it
G8 of the gyro program, SDL-client half.

The `Welcome` has always carried the backend the host actually RESOLVED, which
is not necessarily the one the client asked for — Auto lands on Xbox 360 for
anything not Sony/Valve/Xbox, and a Switch Pro on a Windows host folds to X360
too. No client read the field. So a player with an 8BitDo, or a Switch Pro on
Windows, got a controller whose gyro did nothing, with nothing anywhere saying
why: the client shipped ~250 Hz of Motion datagrams and the host parsed and
discarded every one.

`GamepadPref::has_motion()` answers whether a backend has a motion plane at all.
The SDL client checks it on the first gyro sample: it logs one line naming the
resolved backend and pointing at the fix (pick a DualSense-class controller
type), then stops sending. Once per slot, not per sample — this path runs at the
pad's sensor rate.

`Auto` deliberately answers true. It means "unknown" — an old host that omitted
the echo, which may well have resolved a DualSense — and suppressing motion on
unknown would silently break working gyro, a worse failure than sending
datagrams nobody reads. The predicate is an exhaustive match so a new backend
has to state its answer rather than inherit one, and a table test pins both
halves: a false negative kills working motion, a false positive keeps the void
open, and both are silent.

Owed: the plan wants this surfaced as a one-line UI hint, not just a log line.
Apple already stores `resolvedGamepad` and Android needs the plumb; neither is
done here, and both want their own gate.

Gate (Linux CI image): fmt, build, clippy --all-targets -D warnings, and the
test suites — green, with the new capability test observed running.

enricobuehler 4834c2ee51 fix(host/pads): DualShock 4 gyro ran 40× fast, and no pad ever stopped turning
Phase 1 of the gyro program (design/gyro-program.md, G1-G5) — the five
correctness fixes under it. Gyro aim integrates angular velocity over time, so
each of these is not a cosmetic wrongness: a wrong scale is every rotation being
the wrong size, a wrong clock is every rotation being integrated against a
fictional dt, and a stale sample is rotation that never happened.

G1 — the DualShock 4 calibration blob. A Sony pad does not assume a motion
scale, it reads one out of a fixed calibration feature report. Ours declared
0.5 LSB per °/s and 8192 LSB/g while the wire delivers 20 and 10000, so every
DS4-type session decoded gyro 40× too fast and acceleration 1.22× hot — since
the backend shipped. The blob now states the wire's own units (the DualSense
blob's numbers, deliberately: both pads consume the identical wire sample). Its
interleaved per-axis order is NOT a bug and stays: the virtual pad declares
BUS_USB, where interleaved is the correct layout; grouped is Bluetooth's.

The same blob lives a second time in the UMDF driver, which is a separate WDK
workspace that cannot depend on pf-inject — one wrong table in two files, where
fixing one reads as fixing it. Both are fixed, and the DS4 feature reports now
live in dualshock4_proto beside the DualSense's rather than in the Linux
backend, so there is one canonical copy to point at.

Field hosts keep the old blob until they update the host package.

G2 — the gate that would have caught it. Nothing pinned any backend's
declaration against the wire, so tests/motion_contract.rs now applies the
CONSUMER's arithmetic (the kernel's, and SDL's, which differ) to each backend
and asserts the result lands back on the wire constants — for the DualSense and
DS4 blobs, and for the Deck and Switch Pro rescales. It also parses the driver's
Rust source and re-derives the units from THAT, so the two copies cannot drift.
Verified non-vacuous both ways: re-introducing the old blob fails with "declares
a fractional 32/64 LSB per °/s", and reverting only the driver's copy fails with
"the UMDF driver's DS4_FEATURE_CALIBRATION has drifted from pf-inject's".

The wire units themselves move to punktfunk_core::input::gamepad, referenced by
the client's capture scale, the Deck/Switch rescales, and the probe — whose
at-rest vector said 16384 (a driver's number, not the wire's) and now says 1 g.

G3 — real sensor clocks. The DualSense advanced its sensor timestamp by +1 raw
unit per report (0.33 µs — a frozen clock) and the DS4 by a flat +188 (~1 ms)
regardless of the real 4-8 ms cadence. Anything integrating rate × dt off that
field got nonsense. All four backends now stamp elapsed monotonic time in their
own units via a shared SensorClock, anchored to the pad's first report so an
irregular publish loop cannot make it drift, and truncated to the field width —
which reproduces the wrap real hardware does.

G4 — motion is level-triggered and had no watchdog. merge_frame preserves the
last sample and the heartbeat re-emits it, so a feed that stops leaves the pad
rotating forever — and with G3's honest clock, at a dt that keeps growing.
Rumble and the pen plane each have an idle timeout; motion now has one too, at
100 ms. Angular velocity only: acceleration is kept, because gravity is
legitimately persistent and blanking it reads as free-fall. The SDL client
parks its gyro at zero when a slot closes, which is the case we can flush
rather than wait out. (The Apple half of this rides in PR #88.)

G5 — a pad returning inside the 300 ms replug grace keeps the same device and
skips the create path, so a different controller inherits the previous one's
touch contact and rotation — and a pad with no gyro never sends a sample to
correct it. sweep() now reports re-claims separately from drops, and the manager
clears the rich plane on one. Rich fields only: rumble and hidout dedup
deliberately survive a removal.

Gates (Linux, CI image): fmt, build, clippy --all-targets -D warnings over
pf-inject/punktfunk-core/punktfunk-probe/pf-client-core, and the test suites —
110 pf-inject unit + 6 contract + 29 pf-client-core gamepad, all green.
Not yet verified on glass; the on-glass sign/scale session is G16.

Everything the 2026-08-03 haptics sweep filed against the pad-audio branch (P2 + P3).
Four of them are the difference between a feature that works and one that fails silently.

**B6 — nothing ever un-muted the coils.** Every rumble report asserts `HAPTICS_SELECT`,
which is SDL's "disable audio haptics" bit: the firmware mutes the very voice coils the
0xD1 stream drives. No code anywhere cleared it again, so ONE rumble left tier-A haptics
silent for the rest of that pad's life — no error, nothing in a log, and the host happily
streaming into a muted actuator. `DsDevice.ds5AudioHapticsReport` is the documented undo
(flag0 with both bits clear); written EP0-direct when the stream starts and again after a
rumble stop while a stream is live, because the stop report re-mutes on its way past.

**B10 — the desktop mix could reach a controller's coils.** Pad endpoints were filtered out
inside `plan()` only. The watchdog, Follow mode and the parked default all go through
`judge_default`, which classifies by NAME — and a pad endpoint is deliberately stamped
"DualSense Wireless Controller" so games treat it as the pad's speaker. No name rule could
ever catch one. It now refuses them by identity.

**B27 — an out-of-range pad aliased onto a real slot.** The 0xCD plane's pad is the only u16
index and every consumer narrowed it with `as u8` on an assumption nothing enforced, so wire
pad 256 steered pad 0's speaker volumes. Rejected at the decoder, which makes the narrowings
lossless by construction. An existing test had pinned the bug in place, asserting that wire
pad 513 round-trips; corrected, plus a test for the 256→0 alias specifically.

**B7 — caps that arrived late were never announced.** The renderer commits the tier-A trade
only once its sink opens, which is well past the arrival burst's two 100 ms ticks, and
`set_pad_audio_caps` only stored an atomic. The client believed it had pad audio while the
host emitted nothing. The input task now compares the live registry against what the last
arrival actually carried and re-arms the burst itself — no new plumbing, and no extra traffic
when nothing changed.

The rest: `needs_aeb_kick` is finally ACTED on (R4) — a stored-but-not-served endpoint is
declined rather than opened, because `AUTOCONVERTPCM` makes it succeed and mis-route; a failed
provisioning no longer latches `PROVISIONED` for the process lifetime (R5), and `host_cap`
retries, so a host that started while the audio stack was busy recovers at the next connect
instead of the next reboot; the loopback init timeout reaps its thread instead of detaching one
per ~2 s reopen (R6); kind-change restarts are bounded (R3) since the trigger is a client-sent
arrival; the devtest uses the endpoint's real channel mask (B11) instead of letting wasapi
derive 0x0F against the endpoint's 0x33; the render loop asks `is_session_ended()` rather than
spinning at nice -16 (R12); short writes are counted and reported instead of dropping the tail
in silence (R13); and a frame addressed to another pad is dropped before it can seed the gap
tracker from a foreign sequence space (R14).

Verified: punktfunk-host clippy -D warnings **0 on a real Windows box**; Linux/amd64 clippy 0
with **589 tests** (pf-client-core 114, pf-inject 101, punktfunk-client-android 20,
punktfunk-core 345+1+8); Android :kit: tests + :app: compile green; fmt clean.

Six punktfunk-host tests fail on that Windows box. FIVE fail identically on a tree with no
pad-audio code at all (QUIC `Rejected(SetupFailed)` — the box's network environment); the
sixth passes 3/3 in isolation and only failed under the parallel run, on a locally-bound
ephemeral port. Neither is this change.

Still owed: on-glass. This is a hardware feature and none of it has been on a real DualSense
since the merge.

enricobuehler 0a72959ef7 Merge main into feat/android-pad-audio
86 commits of main, including the whole M1-M12 haptics sweep. Twelve conflicting files;
three of them were more than textual.

**The capability bits collided.** Both branches allocated the SAME wire bits for DIFFERENT
features: `client_caps 0x04` and `host_caps 0x20` are redundant desktop audio on main and
pad audio here. Merged naively, a peer would negotiate one and get the other. Pad audio
moves to the next free bits — `CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO = 0x08`, `HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO = 0x40` —
and the `abi.rs` mirrors move with them (their compile-time equality assertions caught the
mismatch, which is exactly what they are for).

**Both branches also claimed ABI v15.** Main's shipped (the rumble-policy floor), so the
pad-audio surface becomes **v16**.

**`native/input.rs` would have reintroduced a fixed bug.** This branch resets
`rumble_seq[idx]` on pad removal; M1 established that the client's reorder gate is
per-connection with no reset path, so restarting the host counter strands every later
envelope until it climbs back. Took main's seq-preserving `clear_pad_feedback` and kept only
the branch's `pad_streams.stop(idx)`.

The rest: `wiring_plan::plan` now delegates to main's `plan_with_formats`, so the pad-endpoint
filter moved into that body and the predicate behind it is factored out as `is_pad_render`
(also what B10 needs); `Ds5Feedback::AUDIO` derives from main's `REPORT_ID_LEN` like its
siblings; `AudioCtl` joins the explicitly-listed unhandled variants so the guard-false case is
covered rather than swept up by a `_`; `include/punktfunk_core.h` regenerated rather than
hand-merged.

Twelve findings from the sweep's DRY/docs/dead-code tail. Most are small; three found
real defects hiding behind the duplication.

**The UHID event ABI existed five times.** Every UHID gamepad backend — DualSense,
DualShock 4, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, Steam Controller 2 — carried its own verbatim
copy of the kernel's constants plus its own `put_cstr`, and they had already drifted:
`switch_pro` was missing the SET_REPORT pair entirely, and `steam_controller` read a
FIXED 16-byte SET_REPORT window instead of the event's own `size`. That last one is a
bug in both directions — a longer report was truncated, and a shorter one had the parser
reading whatever the reused event buffer still held past the payload, i.e. acting on
rumble values the game never wrote. Now one `uhid_abi` module owns the numbers plus the
two accessors that are easy to get subtly wrong, with tests on exactly that.

**A dead force-feedback id fallback.** ff-core's `input_ff_upload` picks a free effect
slot and writes it into the effect BEFORE uinput forwards the request, so the `id == -1`
branch could never run — and allocating from a local counter would have been the wrong
answer anyway, since the kernel owns that id space. Removed, with a `debug_assert` where
it stood.

**Apple's HID path silently dropped weak rumble.** `hidByte` took the top byte with no
non-zero floor, so every amplitude below 0x0100 rendered as exactly nothing. Android has
always floored it at 1; this was the odd one out. That converter also existed twice
byte-identically inside one Gradle module — now one `wireAmplitudeToByte`.

Also: the DS5 output-report layout gets named offsets (`dualsense_proto::out_report`)
documenting all three transport bases — USB 0, SDL payload −1, Bluetooth +2 — since the
differing bases are transport-forced, not drift. `pf-client-core` cannot import them (it
and `pf-inject` do not depend on each other, and a DualSense layout has no business in
`punktfunk-core`, their only shared crate), so its copy now DERIVES its offsets by
explicit subtraction and a test pins the relationship. `PUNKTFUNK_HID_EFFECT_MAX` sizes
the struct it describes instead of a second literal 11 — the header now emits
`uint8_t effect[PUNKTFUNK_HID_EFFECT_MAX]`. The rumble policy engine's `min_pulse_ms`
and `keepalive_ms` docs stop naming cases nothing implements: no in-tree caller sets
`min_pulse_ms`, and the macOS DualSense-over-BT keepalive the doc cited CANNOT be served
by the quirk, because that renderer skips writes whose levels are unchanged and would
swallow the engine's re-emit — it keeps its own keepalive instead. `TrackpadHaptic` is
marked as staged scaffolding (the tag is on a shipped wire; removing the variant would
not reclaim it). Three ×257-vs-`<<8` doc comments corrected — the scaling itself is fine,
both round-trip to 255. `backstop_ms.max(160)` deleted as unreachable (the engine floors
at 500). New tests for `Ds5Feedback` and for the Android rumble JNI packing on BOTH sides,
with `MAX_PADS <= 16` now a compile-time assertion rather than a comment.

Closes S1-S9, S11, T2, T3 (design/haptics-sweep-2026-08-03.md M12).

S11's second half is NOT a defect and was left alone: `clients/session/src/main.rs`
calls `set_forwarding` unconditionally on every params-build (its own comment explains
why — browse mode reuses one service across launches), so `Ctl::Forwarding` routinely
arrives unchanged and that early-out is what stops a redundant `sync_open` + Valve-HIDAPI
cycle each launch.

Verified: pf-inject clippy -D warnings 0 / 91 tests; pf-client-core + punktfunk-core
clippy 0 / 437 tests (amd64 container); punktfunk-client-android 7 tests; Android :kit:
6 tests; Apple swift build + 189 tests / 0 failures; cargo fmt --all --check clean. Each
new test probed by reverting its fix — the fixed SET_REPORT window fails 3, a broken pack
shift fails 3, dropping the amplitude floor fails 1, and a wrong DS5 offset either fails
the pin or refuses to compile.

Pressing guide/Steam/QAM collided with the client device's own shell: iOS 26
opens its Game Overlay for the Home press (no app opt-out until iOS 27 makes
it a user setting), and a Gaming-Mode client opened BOTH Steam overlays for
one press — the local one covering the stream.

Two cross-client tier-P settings, zero wire changes:

- system_buttons (auto|forward|local): raw guide+misc1 passthrough. Auto
  forwards everywhere EXCEPT under gamescope, where SteamOS reacts to the
  same physical press no matter what.
- guide_gesture (auto|on|off): hold Select ALONE ~350ms sends the HOST's
  guide, down until release — held on, that's the host's long-press, which
  opens a Gaming-Mode host's QAM for regular pads. A Select tap is delivered
  on release with its up TAP_PRESS (50ms) behind, because per-transition
  sends fold into seq'd GamepadState snapshots and a back-to-back pair can
  coalesce into no press at all. A Select inside a combo (the escape chord)
  passes through untouched. Auto arms it only where the raw press can't
  reach the host cleanly: gamescope, iOS/iPadOS, tvOS.

The same SelectGesture rules live in pf-client-core (pure state machine +
unit tests), the Apple client (mask-diff adaptation in GamepadCapture), and
Android's GamepadRouter. Settings rows on every surface (GTK, WinUI,
console UI, Decky, Apple x2, Android x2) with profile plumbing throughout.

punktfunk-session grows a control socket
($XDG_RUNTIME_DIR[/app/$FLATPAK_ID]/punktfunk-session-ctl.sock — the one
runtime path a flatpak and the host see identically): 'guide'/'qam' verbs
inject synthetic taps. The Decky panel gains a Host menus section (visible
while the client runs) whose buttons press the host's Steam/QAM and close
the local menu so the host's shows through.

iOS 27's GCControllerHomeButtonSettingsManager deep-link is a TODO (the
class needs the Xcode 27 SDK to compile). Docs: input, client-settings,
steam-deck. Design: punktfunk-planning design/system-buttons-routing.md.

Two faults in the rich-feedback plane — the lightbar, player LEDs and adaptive
triggers — both of which leave a controller physically wrong with nothing to
put it right.

Nothing reset the pad on teardown. Rumble stops on its own the moment nothing
renews it, but the rich planes are LATCHED in the controller's firmware: they
outlive the stream, the app, and being unplugged. Ending a session while a game
held a weapon's trigger resistance left the physical trigger stiff on the
desktop afterwards, and its lightbar showing whatever the game last set, until
another game happened to set one. The Apple client already reset on teardown;
the desktop and Android halves now do too — triggers to mode 0x00, lightbar
dark, player indicator cleared. Android writes them EP0-direct like its rumble
stop, because the reader thread is stopping and the queue would never drain.

A single lost datagram stranded the pad on the previous value. The plane is
deduped AND rides unreliable datagrams, which is a bad pairing: a change is
forwarded exactly once, so when that datagram is dropped nothing re-derives it
— the game keeps sending the same value and the dedup swallows every copy. The
pad then holds the last weapon's trigger effect, or the last lightbar colour,
for as long as the game keeps that setting, which can be the rest of a level.
The dedup already remembers the current state, so it can repair itself: it now
re-emits what it has latched once a second. Slow on purpose — this is a repair
mechanism, not a transport, and every value is idempotent, so a client that did
receive the original simply re-applies it. A forward re-stamps the clock, so a
plane the game is actively driving never pays for a renewal it does not need.

One-shot pulses are deliberately excluded from that renewal: replaying a
trackpad haptic would be a new pulse, not a repair. Raw passthrough reports are
excluded too — the device's own refresh cadence already re-sends them verbatim.

Three faults in the desktop session's gamepad path.

The Steam Deck lost its built-in trackpad-mouse at the start of every session.
SDL's Valve HIDAPI driver clears the pad's digital mappings during
*enumeration*, which is part of bringing the gamepad subsystem up — so holding
the drivers off from inside GamepadService::pumped could never work: receiving
a GamepadSubsystem means the enumeration has already happened. The hint set
there detached a driver that had already done the damage, and lizard mode only
came back seconds later when the firmware watchdog restored it. The presenter
now disables them with its other pre-SDL_Init hints. The threaded worker always
had this right; only the caller-pumped path was wrong, and it could not fix
itself, hence a separate entry point its callers can place correctly.

Player LEDs did nothing at all on any pad that is not a DualSense. The match
arm handled the DualSense raw-effects path and let everything else fall through
a bare `_`, though SDL exposes set_player_index and owns the per-device
pattern. The wire carries a positional bitmask rather than an index, and the
bridge is the popcount: every convention that reaches this wire spells "player
N" as N lit LEDs — the DualSense patterns 0x04/0x0A/0x15/0x1B/0x1F and the
Switch/XInput run 0x01/0x03/0x07/0x0F alike — so counting them works for both,
where reading a bit position would only ever suit one. No lit LED means no
player, not player 0. The remaining unhandled variants are now named rather
than swept up by `_`, so a new one cannot join them silently.

A forwarded pad could be left buzzing when the session ended. detach() only
posts Ctl::Detach; the close that flushes the pad, tells the host to remove it
and explicitly zeroes the motors runs when the pump next drains that message.
Single mode broke out of the loop immediately after detaching and Event::Quit
never detached at all, so both skipped it entirely. The teardown now sits where
every exit converges instead of on the individual breaks. That still leaves the
several paths that leave by `?` on a fatal overlay or present error, so the
pump also silences its slots on Drop — the explicit call stays, because a pad
should go quiet before a long teardown rather than after it. Drop closes the
slots directly rather than draining the queue that would have done it: same
physical outcome, and it touches no lock, where draining reaches an unwrap on a
Mutex that would abort the process if it panicked mid-unwind.

Main had moved 34 commits past the merge-base and 13 files had diverged.
Resolving now rather than later, since the force-feedback sweep work is landing
in the same files.

Five conflicts needed hand resolution. Four were "each side added something
different" and keep both: the Forwarding and PadAudioPrefs control variants with
their handlers and setters (pf-client-core/gamepad.rs), both of the session's
pre-attach declarations (forwarding first, so slots still declare their
pad-audio caps at open time), main's WiredPlan/fingerprint alongside the
branch's pad_render_ids (audio_control.rs), and main's judge_default signature
(wasapi_cap.rs).

wiring_plan.rs was not mechanical. Main's 652abeb3 added a flagged last-resort
loopback tier; the branch had added a fifth `plan` parameter excluding pad
endpoints from every role. Taking either side alone loses the other, and
combining them carelessly is worse than both: the new last-resort tier would
happily select the pad's own speaker endpoint, which is stamped "DualSense
Wireless Controller" with no virtual marker precisely so games read it as the
pad's speaker — routing the entire desktop mix into the controller's voice
coils. The branch's exclusion shadows `renders` before any tier runs, so the
last resort inherits it; `a_pad_is_never_the_last_resort` pins that, including
that a pad-only candidate set stays honestly unsatisfiable rather than falling
back onto the coils.

Verified: clippy -p punktfunk-host -p pf-client-core --all-targets --locked
-D warnings = 0; pf-client-core 93/93; punktfunk-host 387 passed with only the
known-environmental gamestream sender_delivers_batches UDP-loopback flake;
wiring_plan 21/21; fmt clean.

NOT verified: audio_control.rs and wasapi_cap.rs are cfg(windows), so neither
the Linux container nor xcheck.sh compiles them. Those two resolutions have had
review only and need the Windows runner before this merges.

A controller that reaches the host by USB passthrough — VirtualHere and friends, or simply a
pad plugged into the host — arrived there twice: once as the real device, once as the virtual
pad this client built from the same hands. Games read both, so a stick drifts against the
centred second pad and menus take every input twice.

New per-client setting, "Forward controllers", default on (today's behaviour). It is tier-P,
so a profile can decline what another profile forwards.

On Linux and Windows it is deliberately stronger than "send nothing". Opening a controller is
what CLAIMS it — SDL's HIDAPI drivers take the device node — and a claimed device is one a
passthrough tool cannot bind, so with this off the session opens no slot at all and never
enables the Valve HIDAPI drivers. Menu navigation is untouched: the launcher still opens the
active pad, and a session supersedes menu mode whether it forwards or not, so the pad is free
for the whole time a stream is up. The consequence, documented at both the setting and the
chord: the controller escape chord is read off forwarded pads, so it is unavailable there.

The Apple and Android input stacks claim nothing, so those clients keep their slots and their
chords and only gate the wire sends — losing tvOS's only controller way out of a stream would
have been the worse bug. Android does stop its DualSense and Steam Controller 2 USB captures,
which do claim the device.

Surfaces: GTK, WinUI, the console settings screen, Apple's touch and gamepad settings, the
Android touch and gamepad settings, and Decky (which also hides the rows that now have nothing
to act on). Everywhere the "which pad" and "pad type" rows grey out while it is off.

Verified: cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings + 79 tests on pf-client-core, pf-console-ui,
punktfunk-client-session and punktfunk-client-linux (linux/amd64 container, gate proven
non-vacuous with a planted error); swift build for the Apple clients; gradle compile + 49 unit
tests for Android (likewise proven); tsc for Decky. clients/windows is UNCOMPILED — both
Windows boxes were offline; its edits were reviewed against the helper signatures by hand.

The 0xD1 pad-audio plane streams a DualSense's voice-coil haptics (back
channel pair, 5 ms Opus frames) and speaker (front pair, 10 ms) per pad from
a Windows host to the SDL clients, which render them into a USB DualSense's
own 4-channel audio device.

Wire (punktfunk-core, ABI v15): PAD_AUDIO_MAGIC 0xD1 [pad][kind][seq][pts]
[opus]; CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x04 / HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x20; per-pad render
capability rides GamepadArrival flags bits 8/9, sent only toward a host that
advertised its cap so old hosts see byte-identical arrivals; silence is a
frozen seq (mic-mute discipline), loss is a seq gap concealed via
AudioGapTracker. HidOutput::AudioCtl (0xCD kind 0x06) forwards the 0x02
report's audio-control bytes 5..=10 change-only, value-deduped, with a
once-per-pad "title asserted haptics-select" diagnosis log.

Windows host endpoint provider (audio/windows/pad_endpoint.rs): per-pad
render endpoints are additional devnode instances of Valve's Steam Streaming
Speakers driver (SetupDiRegisterDeviceInfo, NOT the class installer - it
needs an interactive window station), stamped with DualSense identity: desc
"Wireless Controller", device name "DualSense Wireless Controller",
ContainerId = the virtual pad's PFDS GUID, 4ch/48k format triplet.
IPropertyStore route first, ACL-repaired registry fallback (the MMDevices
keys deny writes even to SYSTEM; the owner's implicit WRITE_DAC + an ACE for
S-1-5-18 resolved by SID is the way in). Provisioned at host startup
(PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO, PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO_SLOTS, default 1), idempotent via
a persisted PunktfunkPadIndex marker; pad endpoints are structurally
ineligible for the mic/loopback wiring plan and guarded against default-
device theft; capture is WASAPI loopback on the stamped endpoint. Devtest:
punktfunk-host pad-endpoint ensure|remove|status.

Host service (native/pad_audio.rs): per-(session,pad) thread, loopback 4ch
-> pair splitter -> per-kind stereo Opus (48k LowDelay CBR 64k) -> per-kind
silence gate (opens at peak>=1e-3, 250 ms hangover, gated = no send + frozen
seq) -> datagrams. Spawned from the native input pump when a DualSense/Edge
arrival carries audio bits and both caps negotiated; idempotent re-arrivals;
reaped on remove and teardown.

Client tier A (pf-client-core/pad_audio.rs): settings pad_haptics (default
on) and pad_speaker (default "pad"); tier A = wired USB DS5/Edge via SDL
connection state with an audio-sibling fallback; correlation maps the SDL
HID path to the pad's own render endpoint (Windows: ContainerId match +
4ch gate via registry; Linux: Sony sink signature); renderer decodes both
kinds into a quad interleave and plays it on the pad's endpoint (WASAPI
autoconvert / PipeWire target.object, 240-2400 frame ring floor,
dont-reconnect so an unplug never re-routes haptics to the desktop
speakers). SDL's DualSense driver sets "disable audio haptics" whenever it
drives rumble emulation, so tier-A pads suppress wire rumble and send one
cleared-enable-bits effects packet to keep the actuators live; AudioCtl
bytes fold back into the effects packet at report-minus-one offsets.

Verification: punktfunk-core 265 tests (macOS) + clippy -D warnings (mac +
Linux docker); pf-inject 85 tests (Linux docker); punktfunk-host cargo
check + clippy + 19 pad tests + 46 audio-module tests (Windows box);
pf-client-core 30 tests + clippy (Linux docker CI image) + cargo check
(Windows box); punktfunk-client-session clippy (Linux) + check (Windows);
cargo fmt --all --check clean on the final tree. NOT yet verified: any
on-glass run (host deploy + real title + physical pad), the stamp-route
split at runtime, exclusive-mode Initialize isolation, Linux-host emission
(the per-pad PipeWire sink is not in this change - Windows hosts only).
Scope excluded deliberately: tier B (Apple CoreHaptics) and tier C
(haptics->rumble derivation), pad_speaker="mix", Android leg, settings UI
surfaces (keys are serde-defaulted), GameStream-plane arrivals (audio_caps
always 0 there).

enricobuehler e1ddd49e37 fix(client-core,ffvk): close the proof-lint hole in two of the three unguarded crates
`clippy::undocumented_unsafe_blocks` is what makes the SAFETY convention a rule rather than a habit,
and three crates had never adopted it — pf-client-core (91 unsafe items), pf-presenter (123) and
punktfunk-core (167) — while every other subsystem crate denied it. That gap is why the decoders'
`unsafe impl Send`s carried a one-line aside instead of an argument: nothing required one.

pf-client-core and pf-ffvk now deny it, with a proof written for all 58 + 3 sites they had.

⚠️ 44 of those 58 were WINDOWS-ONLY — `clipboard.rs` 24 and `video_d3d11.rs` 20 — and invisible to
the Linux measurement that sized this work at 14. Same trap as the E0133 sweep: a Linux-only survey
of a cross-platform crate undercounts by whatever the `cfg` hides, here by 3x. Landing the deny on
the strength of that number alone would have re-broken Windows CI, which is exactly the mistake this
session already made once with the `warn`-that-was-really-`deny`.

The proofs say what is actually load-bearing rather than restating the call. In `clipboard.rs` that
is the ownership split Win32 requires and nothing in the code stated: `GetClipboardData` returns a
handle BORROWED from the clipboard (never freed here), while `GlobalAlloc` + `SetClipboardData`
TRANSFERS ownership to it (which is why nothing frees that one either) — two opposite rules, three
lines apart. In `video_d3d11.rs` the recurring one is that libav's `get_format` list is
NUL-terminated by `AV_PIX_FMT_NONE`, which is what keeps the walk in bounds.

Remaining: punktfunk-core (~146, of which `abi.rs` is 141) and pf-presenter (~108). Both want the
"state the contract once" treatment — abi.rs's sites are a handful of repeating shapes (`opt_cstr`
on caller C strings, null-guarded out-param writes, forwarding calls), not 141 distinct arguments.
Note the vendored `fec-rs` (18 sites) is a separate path-dependency crate, so it is out of scope
rather than something to prove.

Verified: Linux .21 fmt + both CI clippy steps rc=0; Windows .47 `-p pf-client-core` clippy
`-D warnings` rc=0 (the only place the 44 are visible), plus the full Windows CI clippy set and
pf-capture's 18 tests.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 6edd700910 fix(client/gamepad): honor an explicit controller type — the per-pad arrival was re-declaring the physical pad
The "Controller type" setting reached the Hello and stopped there. Every pad then
opened with a GamepadArrival carrying its DETECTED kind, and the host builds each
virtual device from that arrival — the session default is only the fallback for a
pad that never declares one. So "emulate my DualSense as a DualShock 4" put a
DualSense on the host the instant the controller connected, and no amount of
reconnecting helped. Apple and the native clients both; Android already applied
the setting per pad.

The setting now rides the declaration too: explicit wins for every slot, Automatic
keeps per-pad detection so a mixed session stays honest. The physical kind still
drives the LOCAL feedback paths — a DualSense emulated as a DualShock 4 keeps its
lightbar and adaptive triggers, and a Deck keeps its rumble keep-alive.

Regressed in 97c67b26 / 76be4c3e (multi-controller support); ships in 0.19.x.

  SteamOS's read-only /usr can't take the .deb layout, so the console's
  plugin store reported "the plugin runner isn't installed" on every
  SteamOS host. update.sh retrofits it onto existing installs.
- plugins.rs runner discovery: check the ~/.local layout after the /usr
  ones; mention the SteamOS path in the not-installed error.
- update.sh: define warn() — it was used but never defined, so under
  `set -e` the first warn aborted the update before services restarted.
- pf-client-core gamepad: a Steam Input virtual pad forwarded on a real
  Deck (the only-pad case) now declares the DECK kind in its per-pad
  arrival instead of the wrapper's Xbox 360 identity — the session-level
  auto_pref already resolved SteamDeck, but the arrival overrides it on
  current hosts.

punktfunk-core client/rumble.rs: a per-connection policy engine consumes seq-gated wire
updates and emits EFFECTIVE actuator commands — re-emits on renewals (duration APIs stay
re-armed), self-silences at the v2 lease, a UNIFORM 1 s legacy-host staleness replacing the
per-platform zoo (Apple 1.6 s / Android 60 s / SDL 1.5 s / Deck 1 s), quirk-declared
actuator keepalives (Deck 40 ms + LSB dedupe-defeat jitter), and one stop per buzzing pad
on connection close. Per-pad mailbox semantics: a stalled embedder wakes to ONE current
command, and a stop can structurally never be the update an overflowing queue drops.

New API/ABI: NativeClient::{next_rumble_command,set_rumble_quirks} +
punktfunk_connection_next_rumble_cmd/_set_rumble_quirks (next_rumble/next_rumble2 stay for
un-migrated embedders; both consumers are fed). Migrations DELETE the platform forks:
pf-client-core loses RumbleState + the Deck keepalive loop + LEGACY_RUMBLE_CEILING_MS and
physically silences a slot at close; Android loses the 60 s legacy one-shot (backstop
repack, cancel-on-zero); Apple loses envelopeDeadline + sessionStaleSeconds + both tick
watchdogs (CoreHaptics realization untouched; mac xcframework rebuilt locally).

Local snapshot of intermingled in-flight work, committed to unblock the encode
refactor (a clean ffmpeg_win.rs for the vbv-dedup follow-on). These hunks span
the same files and can't be cleanly split here; the commit bundles three
distinct workstreams that each belong in their own PR:

  - logging rework (~43 files: level re-tiering, structured fields, `?e`,
    hot-path flood latches)
  - conflicting-host detection (detect.rs + detect/{linux,windows}.rs + wiring
    in main.rs/mgmt.rs/Cargo.toml/docs/packaging)
  - standby-sink DWM-stall attribution (windows/display_events.rs + capture/
    vdisplay wiring)

NOT verified as a combination. NOT to be pushed until the refactor is done and
these are re-verified and reorganized into their proper per-workstream PRs.

Community-contributed round 5 of the Steam Controller 2 passthrough,
reviewed + verified. A Puck-captured pad now presents the dongle's real
seven-interface identity (CDC pair, four controller HID slots, management
HID) instead of relabelling its reports as a wired 1302 — Steam's Puck
feature dances (wireless_transport / esb/bond / 0xB4 slot status) get
capture-shaped answers, and the wired identity's canned replies are
corrected to the real captures (attribute count, string-attr framing,
0xF2 firmware info, bcdDevice nibble encoding).

- new wire pref 10 = SteamController2Puck (Hello/Welcome byte; older
  peers degrade to Auto), selected by the Android capture link when the
  transport is a dongle, or by VID/PID in the degraded InputDevice path
- TRITON_RDESC is now the captured numbered descriptor (mouse/keyboard
  lizard collections + per-id vendor reports); unnumbered framing made
  hidraw mangle feature report 2 and Steam eventually closed the device
- interrupt-IN now queues sparse reports (battery/RSSI/wireless edges)
  instead of keeping latest-only, so a 250 Hz state packet can no longer
  erase them before the USB/IP poll observes them; EP0 SET_REPORT is
  split by wValue report type (OUTPUT parsed for rumble vs FEATURE)
- vendored usbip-sim: config attributes/max-power, IAD prefix + BOS
  descriptor support, correct BCD minor.patch encoding (Deck's 0x0300/
  0x0200 values are nibble-zero, so its bytes are unchanged), and
  full-speed interrupt pacing in ms (was 8 kHz from the HS formula)
- Triton feedback is serviced at 1 kHz while an SC2 backend exists so
  Steam's trackpad haptic writes reach the client unbatched

Verified: clippy -D warnings + 319 host tests green on Linux, core wire
tests green, Android kit/app compile + unit tests green. On-glass Puck
retest owed.

The 2026 Steam Controller (Valve "Ibex" / SDL "Triton") captured on an
Android client is passed through AS-IS: the host presents a virtual pad
with the real wired identity (28DE:1302) and mirrors the physical pad's
raw HID reports, so Steam on the host drives it over hidraw exactly like
the real thing — trackpads, gyro, paddles, and its rumble/settings writes
flow back onto the physical controller. Protocol ground truth: SDL's
Valve-maintained SDL_hidapi_steam_triton.c + steam/controller_structs.h.

Core:
- GamepadPref::SteamController2 (wire byte 9; names steamcontroller2/
  sc2/ibex) + PUNKTFUNK_GAMEPAD_STEAMCONTROLLER2 in the C ABI.
- Raw HID planes: RichInput::HidReport (0xCC/0x04, client→host input
  reports verbatim, Copy fixed-64 body) and HidOutput::HidRaw (0xCD/0x05,
  host→client feature/output writes for replay). Best-effort is sound by
  the device protocol's own design (rumble re-sent every ~40 ms, settings
  every ~3 s — losses self-heal); HidRaw bypasses hidout dedup for
  exactly that reason.

Host (Linux):
- triton_proto.rs + steam_controller2.rs: Triton2Manager UHID backend —
  no kernel driver binds the PID (hidraw only; Steam Input is the
  consumer), raw mirroring with a typed-fallback 0x42 synthesizer until
  the first raw report, SET_REPORT ack + raw forward, canned GET_REPORT
  serial reply, rumble also parsed onto the universal 0xCA plane (phone
  mirror). Rides the uhid + 28DE-conflict degrades; UHID promotion by
  Steam is flagged in the creation log (usbip transport is the known
  follow-up if Steam ignores Interface:-1 devices for Triton too).

Android:
- Sc2UsbLink (wired/Puck: vendor-interface claim detaches the OS driver,
  interrupt read loop, lizard-off on the watchdog cadence, raw replay via
  interrupt-OUT / SET_REPORT with hidapi report-id framing) and Sc2BleLink
  (Valve vendor GATT service, notify subscribe machine, 0x45 re-framing,
  HIGH connection priority).
- Sc2Capture orchestrator: raw plane + typed mirror (exit chord + host
  degrade paths keep working) on a GamepadRouter external slot; raw
  return path via GamepadFeedback.onHidRaw.
- nativeSendPadHidReport JNI (direct ByteBuffer, no per-report copy),
  hidout raw decode, usb-host/BLUETOOTH_CONNECT manifest bits, opt-out
  settings toggle, StreamScreen engagement incl. the USB permission flow.

Verified: core 149 + host 312 tests green on Linux (.21), on-box uhid
smoke creates/mirrors/tears down the virtual 28DE:1302, C ABI harness
round-trips, Android compileDebugKotlin green. On-glass with the real
controller owed.

The reserved GamepadPref::SteamController = 5 slot goes live: the same
hid-steam driver under the wired-SC identity (28DE:1102,
ID_CONTROLLER_STATE), UHID-only in v1 (no captured SC USB interface
layout, so no Steam-Input promotion — the pre-usbip Deck state;
acceptable for discontinued hardware).

Layout pinned against the kernel's ID_CONTROLLER_STATE table: 24-bit
buttons at 8..11 (low bits shared with the Deck; grips at 9.7/10.0 =
the Deck's L5/R5 positions; right-pad click 10.2; joystick click 10.6),
u8 triggers at 11/12, the joystick/left-pad MULTIPLEX at 16..20 (a
left-pad contact shadows the stick, like real hardware's lpad_touched
flag), right pad at 20..24. Mapping: wire left stick -> SC stick; wire
right stick -> right-pad coords + touched bit (the SC's camera surface —
the second-stick loss is inherent); PADDLE1/2 -> the two grips (natively,
masked out of the fold input); PADDLE3/4 + MISC1 -> the remap policy.
The SC parser has NO gamepad_mode gate, so no mode-entry pulse.

SteamDeckPad grew a SteamModel (open_model); ScProto/SteamCtrlManager;
pick_gamepad flips SteamController -> itself on Linux (replacing the
Xbox360 fold); SDL picker splits Valve PIDs (Deck 1205 stays SteamDeck,
SC 1102/1142 now declare SteamController).

Verified: .21 clippy -D warnings + 304/0 tests + on-box UHID smoke
(hid-steam binds 1102, BTN_A + right-pad ABS_RX land on evdev, no mode
pulse); .133 clippy -D warnings green.

A virtual Pro Controller (057E:2009, BUS_USB, verbatim 203-byte USB
descriptor triple-cross-checked from real-device captures) bound by
hid-nintendo (>= 5.16): Nintendo-family client pads get correct glyphs +
POSITIONAL layout (wire south/east/west/north -> Switch B/A/Y/X, so the
physical-position <-> glyph relationship survives), live gyro/accel, and
HD-rumble feedback — instead of folding to Xbox360 (mirrored A/B + X/Y,
no motion).

- switch_proto: report-0x30/0x21/0x81 codec + the entire canned probe
  conversation, pinned line-by-line against hid-nintendo.c: 0x80-family
  USB acks, device info (type 0x03 + per-pad MAC), SPI-flash calibration
  blobs (user magics ABSENT -> factory path; sticks 2048 +/- 1400 with
  the left/right byte-order difference; IMU offsets 0 + the driver's own
  default scales so raw units pass 1:1), rumble amplitude decode through
  the driver's inverted joycon_rumble_amplitudes table, player lights ->
  0xCD PlayerLeds. 11 new pin tests.
- switch_pro: UHID backend answering the probe from the manager's
  service pass; SwitchProManager = UhidManager<SwitchProProto> (the 8 ms
  heartbeat doubles as the steady 0x30 stream the driver's post-probe
  rate limiter wants). switchpro-test CLI smoke.
- Router/fold: SwitchPro arms; pick_gamepad SwitchPro -> itself on Linux;
  degrade_if_no_uhid covers it. SDL picker: NintendoSwitchPro + JoyconPair
  declare SwitchPro.

Headless-validated on .21 (hid-nintendo 7.1): probe completes ('using
factory cal' for sticks + IMU, player-1 LED round-trips to the 0xCD
plane), gamepad + IMU input devices created, and an evdev capture pins
the positional swap (wire A/B -> BTN_SOUTH/BTN_EAST) + full-range stick
scaling. .21 clippy -D warnings + 303/0 tests; .133 clippy -D warnings.

The plain-DualSense transport + report codec under the Edge USB identity
(054C:0DF2, verbatim 389-byte real-device descriptor cross-checked against
the raw usbmon capture + hhd's production virtual Edge), so the wire back
grips (BTN_PADDLE1..4: Deck L4/L5/R4/R5, Elite P1-P4) land on the Edge's
NATIVE buttons[2] bits instead of the fold/drop policy: PADDLE1/2 -> the
right/left back buttons, PADDLE3/4 -> the right/left Fn buttons (kernel
BTN_TRIGGER_HAPPY1..4 on >= 7.2; SDL/Steam read hidraw on any kernel).

- proto: Edge descriptor + btn2 bits + edge_paddle_bits(), pinned against
  hid-playstation DS_EDGE_BUTTONS_* and SDL_hidapi_ps5 (tests).
- Linux: DsUhidIdentity parameterizes the UHID create; DsEdgeLinuxProto /
  DualSenseEdgeManager. Headless-validated on .21 (7.1): driver=playstation
  binds 0DF2, all 4 input devices created, probe lightbar/player-LED
  feedback round-trips; dualsense-test grew --edge (cycles all 4 paddles).
- Windows: UMDF driver serves device_type=2 (Edge descriptor/attrs/strings,
  DS feature blobs); WinDsIdentity parameterizes the SwDevice profile +
  devtype stamp; DsEdgeWinProto / DualSenseEdgeWindowsManager; INF gains
  pf_dualsenseedge. Driver change => resign + reinstall before on-glass.
- Router: DualSenseEdge arms in route_handle/apply_rich/pump/heartbeat;
  pick_gamepad folds Edge -> itself on linux||windows; degrade_if_no_uhid
  covers it.
- Client (SDL): 054C:0DF2 declares DualSenseEdge (no distinct SDL type);
  Edge physical pads take the raw DS5 effects path; console-UI glyphs =
  Shapes. Apple/Android pickers follow separately.

Verified: .21 clippy -D warnings + 292/0 host tests + on-box UHID bind
smoke; .133 clippy pending in this push.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 aedffc69dd fix(gamepad/client): bound legacy Steam Deck rumble on a lost stop-frame (G16)
Against a legacy (no-TTL) host, a held Deck rumble droned forever if the stop
datagram was lost: the 40 ms keep-alive re-kicked the actuator indefinitely and
only the v2 lease `deadline` ever bounded it. Add a per-slot `updated_at` clock
bumped ONLY by real host datagrams (never by the keep-alive re-kick, unlike
`last_at`), and in the legacy branch (`ttl_ms == 0`) issue a single (0, 0) once
it is stale past LEGACY_RUMBLE_CEILING_MS (1000 ms = 2x the host's flat 500 ms
legacy refresh). A genuinely-held legacy rumble refreshes every 500 ms and never
trips; the v2 `deadline` path is untouched and stays authoritative.

Verified: Windows .173 `cargo clippy -p pf-client-core -- -D warnings` (green).
On-glass owed: real Deck with an induced legacy stop-frame drop.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 26cac9ce20 fix(gamepad): truncate stick/trigger axes uniformly across clients (G25)
Apple's GamepadCapture rounded axis values (`(v * scale).rounded()`) while
SDL-core and Android truncate, so a half-pressed control emitted 128 on Apple
vs 127 elsewhere. Drop `.rounded()` so `Int32(Float)` truncates toward zero on
Apple too; rails are unchanged (full deflection stays 255 / ±32767).

Also clamp SDL-core's LeftX/RightX to a symmetric -32767 like the Y axes and
the other clients already do, instead of letting the raw i16 reach -32768.

Verified: Apple `swift build` + full PunktfunkKit suite (124 pass); SDL half
on Windows .173 `cargo clippy -p pf-client-core -- -D warnings` (green).

Host was already built for 16 pads; the blocker was every client
hard-coding pad 0. This lands the host-side + reference-client contract:

- input.rs: new wire kinds GamepadArrival=14 (declares a pad's type:
  code=GamepadPref byte, flags=pad) and GamepadRemove=13 (flags=seq<<24|pad,
  shares the snapshot seq space via encode/decode_gamepad_remove).
- pf-client-core/gamepad.rs: reworked from a single `open` pad to a
  slots: Vec<Slot> model — every forwarded controller gets a stable
  lowest-free wire index held for its lifetime, per-slot held/axis/touch/
  rumble state, GamepadArrival on open + GamepadRemove on close, and
  feedback routed back per wire index. Automatic forwards all real pads;
  a pin forces single-player.
- punktfunk1.rs: replaced the single-session PadBackend enum with a Pads
  router — per-pad kinds[]/owner[] arrays, lazily-created per-kind managers,
  pure route_decision keeping a live device in its manager across a kind
  change (no ghost/dup). Input thread seq-gates GamepadRemove (clears the
  pad_mask bit, resets rumble) and applies GamepadArrival kinds.
- inject linux/windows backends: add the two new no-op InputKind arms.

Native/session + default-Windows clients (both spawn punktfunk-session)
inherit this. 57 core + 33 client-core + 272 host tests green; clippy clean.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 73c911cae4 feat(rumble): host-authoritative self-terminating envelopes (0xCA v2)
Rumble was level-triggered, unbounded state on a lossy channel: a non-zero
level meant "buzz until further notice", healed only by the host re-sending
state every 500 ms, and every client guessed when the host had died with its own
magic timeout (SDL 1.5 s, Apple 1.6 s, Android up to 60 s). A lost stop, a
reordered start, or a dead host could drone the motor for seconds.

Make "stuck rumble" inexpressible on the wire. The 0xCA datagram grows a
length-tolerant tail — [u8 seq][u16 ttl_ms] — so it self-terminates: the host
authorizes a level for at most ttl_ms and renews it (~120 ms) while it holds,
letting an abandoned one lapse client-side. seq is a per-pad wrapping reorder
gate (reusing GamepadSnapshot::seq_newer) so a reordered stale start can't
re-light a stopped motor. Decoders read the first 7 bytes as a plain level and
ignore the tail, so no wire-version bump: an old client renders a new host's
levels, and a new client falls back to its prior staleness heuristic against an
old host (ttl = None). All four generation pairings render correctly.

- core: encode_rumble_datagram_v2 / decode_rumble_envelope (datagram.rs); the
  client demux applies the seq gate then forwards (pad, low, high, Option<ttl>);
  next_rumble is unchanged (drops ttl), next_rumble_ttl keeps it; ABI adds
  punktfunk_connection_next_rumble2 + PUNKTFUNK_RUMBLE_NO_TTL, ABI_VERSION 4->5
  (WIRE_VERSION unchanged — the tail is backward-compatible).
- host (punktfunk1.rs): the flat 500 ms refresh becomes a renewal loop that bumps
  seq + stamps a fresh TTL on active pads and drains a short post-stop zero burst,
  then goes quiet. Hatches: PUNKTFUNK_RUMBLE_ENVELOPE=0 (legacy v1 + flat refresh,
  a bisect switch), PUNKTFUNK_RUMBLE_TTL_MS (clamped [150, 5000]).
- renderers honor the TTL as their playback duration/deadline and keep their old
  heuristic only for a legacy (ttl=None) update: pf-client-core (the Deck haptic
  keep-alive is now deadline-bounded so it can't sustain a host-stopped rumble),
  clients/windows (SDL duration), android (JNI packs the lease out-of-band in bit
  48 so any u16 ttl is unambiguous; Kotlin createOneShot(ttl)), apple
  (RumbleRenderer.envelopeDeadline + nextRumble2; sessionStaleSeconds demoted to
  the legacy fallback).
- tests: codec round-trip + tail tolerance + seq-gate reorder (Rust); the probe
  asserts the v2 tail arrived under PUNKTFUNK_TEST_FEEDBACK; the Apple loopback
  asserts ttlMs round-trips end to end; RumbleTuning lease-decision cases.

The host-side idle-timeout from the previous commit is defense in depth on the
game side; this is the guarantee on the client side. Design:
punktfunk-planning/design/rumble-envelope-plan.md.

  PUNKTFUNK_WIN_SEPARATE=1 validation hatch (the wedge it guarded is structurally gone —
  a second identity gets its own monitor + ring; default flips in W5 after soak);
  max_displays and NVENC session-unit budgets decline an unaffordable display AT
  admission; kick_dwm_compose is process-globally throttled and per-display — cursor
  jump + 35 ms dwell (a sub-tick jump composes nothing; DWM reads dirties from current
  state at the next vsync tick).

On-glass on the RTX box: V1/V2/V4/V5/V6/V9 green — two paired clients on two monitors
streaming ~60 fps each with zero mismatches and zero bind failures, churn-hammer clean
(no 0x80070490), per-ring mode-change recreate leaves the sibling untouched, typed
budget rejection, fault-injected cross-bind refused loudly with the sibling undisturbed.
V7: WUDFHost-kill shared fate is clean; in-process device recovery is a known follow-up
(the retired-never-closed control handles block the adapter cycle — reset-pf-vdisplay.ps1
recovers). DWM composes two IDD monitors concurrently at 60 fps — the plan's
load-bearing unknown, answered yes.

Also carries the client-HDR EDID forwarding that shared this working tree
(Hello::display_hdr → AddRequest luminance tail → the monitor's CTA-861.3 HDR block,
PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_PEAK_NITS hatch) and the Deck client fixes (40 ms rumble keep-alive
with 1-LSB jitter, HDR self-diagnosing presenter warn, flatpak HDR env).

Two hardenings against runaway vibration (one Deck session buzzed on a
~2 s cadence): the DualSense output-report parse now also treats
valid_flag2 COMPATIBLE_VIBRATION2 (data[39] BIT2) as rumble-carrying —
a writer hardcoding the ≥2.24-firmware convention previously had its
rumble INCLUDING stops silently ignored, and a missed stop re-sends
stale nonzero state forever via the host's 500 ms refresh. And the
client's SDL rumble duration drops 5 s → 1.5 s: long enough that a
couple of lost 500 ms refreshes don't gap genuine rumble, short enough
that stale state dies on its own.

punktfunk-session streams one --connect session in an SDL3 window: ash
swapchain with a transfer-only letterboxed blit of the software-decode
path (no graphics pipeline until the phase-2 dmabuf/CSC pass), the
ui_stream input-capture state machine on SDL events (scancode→VK table
cross-checked against the evdev one), gamepads via a new caller-pumped
GamepadService mode (SDL video owns the main thread here), and the
shell↔session stdout contract: {"ready":true}, per-window stats:
lines, JSON error + exit codes 0/2/3/4. Strict trust — no pin, no
connect. Design: punktfunk-planning linux-client-rearchitecture.md.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 0ab97b597c refactor(client): extract UI-agnostic plumbing into pf-client-core (phase 0)
Session pump, FFmpeg decode, PipeWire audio, SDL3 gamepads, keymap, trust
store, mDNS discovery, library client and Wake-on-LAN move verbatim from
clients/linux into crates/pf-client-core, shared with the upcoming Vulkan
session binary (punktfunk-planning: linux-client-rearchitecture.md).
The GTK client re-exports them at the crate root so every existing
crate::-path keeps resolving; its manifest drops the moved-only deps.
