`5742ec95` landed `create_monitor`'s EDID call split across two lines where it
now fits on one, so the drivers workspace fails `cargo fmt --all --check`.
Whitespace only — separated from the gamepad work it happened to block.
One signing pass over the 2026-07-30 audit findings:
- Timing math unified (D4): monitor-description and target modes now come
from ONE IddSampleDriver-exact builder differing only in
vSyncFreqDivider; the virtual-display-rs legacy formula (width-less
pixel rate, deliberately fractional vSync) is gone.
- EDID (D5): the preferred-timing DTD is built from the SESSION's mode
when it fits the encoding (pf-driver-proto's tested builder; 1080p60
stays the fallback); the range-limits descriptor covers everything the
driver can advertise (max clock 150 MHz → 2550 MHz, max-H +255 —
the old limits were violated by the driver's own 1080p120 default);
product code 0 → 1. Deliberately still no HDMI VSDB — documented in
the module doc.
- INF (D6): UmdfFileObjectPolicy=AllowNullAndUnknownFileObjects added
(the sibling drivers all carry it); the dead DeviceGroupId (inert under
ProcessSharingDisabled) dropped; the IddCx0102-vs-
IddMinimumVersionRequired=10 pairing documented as deliberate — 0102
is the extension's registered identity, not a version request.
- Watchdog lifecycle (D7): device cleanup now stops the host-liveness
thread (it ran forever and its reap raced device teardown over the
same monitor list).
- Drain path off the mutex (D8): the per-frame has/take_frame_channel
checks (≥60 locks/s per worker on the mutex the whole control plane,
the mode DDIs and the watchdog contend) are gated by a delivery
generation counter — the steady state takes no lock.
- Adapter cache (D9): last-write-wins slot instead of a OnceLock, and a
D0 re-entry from a REAL low-power state clears + re-inits — the stale
pre-power-cycle handle used to wedge every later IOCTL_ADD.
- Realtime GPU priority (D10): IddCxSetRealtimeGPUPriority is now
A/B-able without a rebuild (PFVD_NO_RT_GPU, machine env) — no
canonical IDD driver raises it, and it preempts the game's and DWM's
queues at a level apps can't reach.
- Logging (D2): the logger rides file_log_enabled() as a whole — a
RELEASE driver without the opt-in no longer OutputDebugStringA's (+2
allocs) per logged event.

Every IDD-push capture stall now carries a VERDICT instead of a hypothesis list.
The shared ring header grows a v2 telemetry tail (drain-loop heartbeat QPC,
last-acquire QPC, full-width offered counter) the driver stamps on every drain
pass; the host samples it between fresh frames and attributes each stall:
worker-stalled (our thread starved) / compose-silence (DWM composed nothing —
the disturbance is below capture) / delivery-leg (frames existed, our
publish/ring/consume lost them). The metronomic WARN prints the running tally,
so one pasted log line settles the Branch-1/Branch-2 fork of the
vdisplay-disturbance-immunity program per session, per box.
Both directions stay version-safe: the tail is gated on the HOST-stamped header
version (a v2 driver never writes past a v1 host's 64-byte layout — it maps the
whole section instead of a fixed 88 bytes), and a v2 host reads a zero heartbeat
as pre-telemetry driver, no verdict.

Field report (iPad via GameStream, 2026-07-23): cursor missing from the
stream. The session's fresh target 257 reported cursor_excluded=false
(DECLARED_TARGETS is keyed per target and only 259 had declared), so the
host skipped forced-composite — but DWM's pointer exclusion after an
IddCx hardware-cursor declare reaches EVERY later monitor of the adapter,
not just the declaring target (proven on-glass: declare on 259 under
WUDFHost 2192, then 257's frames streamed pointer-free with CURSOR_SHOWING
set and SM_MOUSEPRESENT true). GameStream/Moonlight clients cannot draw a
forwarded cursor, so those sessions were silently cursor-less.
ADD replies now report any-declare-this-WUDFHost-life (the state's real
scope — it dies with the adapter reset, same as before); per-target ids
stay only as the dbglog audit trail. Channel-less sessions on a declared
adapter then hit the existing forced-composite gate (GDI poller + blend)
and carry the pointer in-video. Host code unchanged.

A declared IddCx hardware cursor is IRREVOCABLE for its OS target's life
(§8.6), and the sticky exclusion survives monitor REMOVE→ADD because each
client gets a STABLE target id — so once any desktop-mode session declared,
every later pure-capture session on that target streamed a cursor-less
desktop: DWM excluded the pointer, no channel forwarded it, no blend drew it
(the exact no-regression gap §8.6's per-session cap gate cannot see).
Driver: track every successful SetupHardwareCursor per target
(DECLARED_TARGETS — scoped to the WUDFHost's life, exactly the sticky
state's scope) and report it in a new AddReply::cursor_excluded tail field
(dual-size discipline, both skews degrade cleanly; no proto bump).
Host: the flag rides AddedMonitor → Monitor → WinCaptureTarget; a session
WITHOUT the cursor channel on a flagged target forces composite mode in the
IDD-push capturer — GDI poller + blend for the session's life, pinned on
(set_cursor_forward cannot clear it: with no client drawing, un-compositing
would erase the pointer entirely).

On-glass: 're-setup on swap-chain assign -> 0x0' fired AFTER 'enable=0
stored' — duplicate/successor monitor entries (re-arrival churn) kept
their default-true flag and re-declared the hardware cursor right after
the composite flip's re-commit, undoing it.
The desired state now lives in a per-target static
(CURSOR_FORWARD_DESIRED): every arrival inherits it (no generation can
resurrect a declare the session turned off), and the flip stamps EVERY
live entry matching the target, declaring against whichever has the
live worker.

The empty-caps un-declare is REJECTED by IddCx (STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER,
on-glass driver 9.9.0722.1407) — there is no un-declare DDI. The
composite flip now works with the only lever the OS gives us: every
mode COMMIT reverts the path to the software cursor, and the driver
skips its per-commit re-declare while cursor_forward_on is off. So:
- driver: disable stores the flag only (no DDI call); enable still
declares immediately against the live worker's event.
- host capturer: after a successful disable flip, force a same-mode
re-commit (win_display::force_mode_reenumeration) — DWM composites
the pointer from the very next commit; the swap-chain flap is the
class the driver's preserved-publisher machinery already rides out.
- state now survives re-arrivals end-to-end: the capturer caches the
APPLIED state (cleared on every channel (re)delivery, which
re-created driver entries need — their flag defaults to declared),
and the stream loop re-applies every tick instead of edge-gating
(steady-state cost: one Option compare).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
On-glass (.173, match-window session): every window-size convergence
re-creates the driver-side monitor (re-arrival resize / sibling-session
slot churn), destroying the cursor worker the channel was delivered to —
the flip then died NOT_FOUND (no entry with target_id ∧ worker) and the
declared state was lost entirely.
Driver: set_cursor_forward becomes STATE, not an edge on one monitor
generation — find by target_id ∧ hw_cursor, store cursor_forward_on
even without a live worker (it steers the next delivery/re-setup);
declare/un-declare only when a worker exists. Channel delivery honors
the flag: setup_and_spawn(declare=false) adopts + spawns WITHOUT
declaring (composite mode), so a later enable-flip declares against the
worker's event.
Host: retain the SET_CURSOR_CHANNEL sender; extract
deliver_cursor_channel and RE-deliver the surviving section on every
ring recreate and — with one retry — when a flip IOCTL fails
(the re-arrived entry gets a fresh worker, declared per its flag).

Belongs to 493f4fae (which shipped only the crates/ side — this
packaging/ half was left unstaged, so the deployed driver silently
lacked the IOCTL and every flip died NOT_FOUND at dispatch):
IOCTL_SET_CURSOR_FORWARD dispatch + monitor::set_cursor_forward
(cursor_forward_on flag, resetup gate) + cursor_worker::
unsetup_hardware_cursor (empty-caps un-declare experiment).

Durable results of the M2c on-glass bring-up (.173, 2026-07-22):
- The base IddCxMonitorQueryHardwareCursor DDI slot is stubbed to
STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED on WDK 26100 — add the ...QueryHardwareCursor3
wrapper (wdk-iddcx) and drain it instead; v3 X/Y are only meaningful
when PositionValid, so a position-invalid tick keeps the prior position.
- Hardware-cursor setup is per-mode-commit: the OS silently reverts to a
software cursor on every mode commit, so re-issue the setup on each
swap-chain assignment (monitor::resetup_cursor, called from
assign_swap_chain) or the query fails NOT_SUPPORTED forever.
- One caps definition for initial setup and re-setup, resting at XOR
FULL: the query delivers ONLY alpha shapes in every configuration
(all three ColorXorCursorSupport levels, event-driven and 30 Hz
polled) — masked/monochrome cursors never arrive. FULL keeps the
frame cursor-free for ALL cursor types; the full-fidelity shape comes
from the session-side cursor source in the host
(design/remote-desktop-sweep.md §8).
- Poll the query at ~30 Hz instead of pure event-wait: masked cursors
never fire the data event, and the seqlock's position/visibility
should stay fresh regardless.

Brings the cursor channel to Windows hosts. The pf-vdisplay driver
declares an IddCx hardware cursor for sessions that negotiated
cursor-forward — DWM then EXCLUDES the pointer from the IDD frame and
delivers shape/position out-of-band, into the same CursorOverlay →
forwarder → wire → client pipeline the Linux portal path uses.
- pf-driver-proto v5 (additive, host floor stays 3): AddRequest's spare
tail becomes hw_cursor (same size/offsets); IOCTL_SET_CURSOR_CHANNEL
delivers a host-created CursorShm section (64-byte seqlock header +
256² shape buffer, layout pinned + tested). No event crosses the
boundary — the host polls at encode-tick pace.
- driver: wdk-iddcx grows the two cursor DDI wrappers; a per-monitor
cursor worker (event wait → QueryHardwareCursor → seqlock publish)
starts only when BOTH the ADD asked and the channel arrived, so a
failed delivery leaves DWM compositing as today. Shape bytes ship raw
(BGRA/masked + pitch); the host converts.
- host: the section rides the existing sealed-channel broker (least-
privilege dup, remote reap on failure); IddPushCapturer::cursor()
seqlock-reads → CursorOverlay (BGRA→RGBA, masked-color approximation,
desktop→frame origin shift, per-shape conversion cache). New
Capturer::cursor() trait hook — the encode loop prefers it over the
frame-attached overlay because hardware-cursor moves produce NO new
frame on a static desktop. hw_cursor survives the re-arrival resize
(carried on the manager's Monitor).
- negotiation: cursor_forward grows the Windows arm (client cap ∧
driver proto ≥ 5, probed once via the control device); SessionPlan
carries cursor_forward → OutputFormat.hw_cursor.
- drive-by: wdk-probe's two pre-existing same-type casts (clippy) and
pf-vdisplay's stale spike-test refs (crate::win_display moved to
pf-win-display; tracing-subscriber was never a dep) repaired.
Verified: proto tests on Mac AND MSVC (15/15 incl. the CursorShm
layout pin); clippy -D warnings for proto/frame/capture/vdisplay/host
on Linux (.21) and native Windows (.173); the DRIVER workspace clippy
-D warnings green against the real WDK 10.0.26100 bindgen (DDI names,
enum variants and IDARG layouts all bind). On-box driver deploy +
on-glass validation follow.

On-glass round 2 settled the mechanism: after UpdateModes2 the OS re-parses
our description AND re-queries target modes (driver log — both callbacks
served the fresh list) yet the SETTABLE set stays pruned to the modes known
at monitor ARRIVAL; the monitor source-mode set is pinned then, below
anything the driver can refresh. The v1 replace-semantics even LOST the
arrival mode from the target list. Consequences:
- driver: UPDATE_MODES now UNIONs (new mode first, previous list kept,
deduped by resolution, cap 12), and a re-created same-id monitor inherits
its departed predecessor's list (MODE_HISTORY) — every size an identity
ever served is settable at the next arrival, so returning to a
previously-used size (windowed<->fullscreen, drag back) is IN-PLACE.
- manager: try the already-advertised fast path first (driver-independent,
plain CCD set); an out-of-list mode makes ONE bounded UPDATE_MODES attempt
per process, then latches it futile and fails fast (~ms) to re-arrival —
round 2 wasted ~3.1 s per arbitrary resize on the doomed wait. Fallback
log demoted warn->info (expected-normal for first-seen sizes).

Latency plan P2.1 (design/first-frame-and-resize-latency.md): a new additive
control-plane op lets the host refresh a LIVE monitor's advertised target-mode
list to lead with an arbitrary new mode (IddCxMonitorUpdateModes2 — the same
IddCx 1.10 *2 family this driver already requires, so no new OS floor). This
removes the 'mode list frozen at ADD' constraint that forced the mid-stream
resize through a REMOVE->ADD monitor hotplug: the monitor's OS identity, its
swap-chain worker and the retained FrameStash all survive an in-place mode set.
Protocol v4 is ADDITIVE over v3: the host's handshake floor stays at v3
(MIN_DRIVER_PROTOCOL_VERSION) and gates the in-place path on the reported
version, keeping re-arrival as the permanent fallback. The driver's stored
mode list is swapped before the DDI and reverted if it fails, so the OS and
the mode-DDI callbacks always agree.

DWM composes a display only when something dirties it, so a session opened
onto an idle desktop never produced a first frame: the host's synthetic-input
"compose kick" (cursor wiggle / sibling-display jump) was the only source, and
it is inherently unreliable — blocked on the secure desktop, defeated by a
fullscreen game's ClipCursor, user-visible, and dead in service contexts. The
field symptom: connect → black stream until something repaints the desktop.
Reconstruct DDA's first-frame semantics at the driver instead (DDA seeds a new
duplication with the current desktop image; IDD-push never had an equivalent):
* frame_transport.rs: new FrameStash — the retained last composed frame, a
driver-private copy-only texture. publish() now reports Published /
DescMismatch / Dropped, and harvest_into() pulls the last-published ring
slot into the stash (keyed-mutex guarded, freshness-checked) before a
superseded publisher is dropped — between sessions the driver keeps writing
the host-side-dead old ring, so that slot IS the current desktop image.
* swap_chain_processor.rs: the worker stashes every frame the ring can NOT
take (unattached, or descriptor-mismatched during a mode/HDR-flip race),
harvests before a supersede, and REPUBLISHES the stash into every freshly
attached ring — the host sees a normal seq=1 publish milliseconds after
channel delivery, no compose needed. Zero steady-state cost: matched
publishes touch only the ring. The frame-channel stash is now polled every
iteration (attach latency = first-frame latency; it was 1-in-30).
* monitor.rs: preserved_stash (LUID-tagged) so the retained frame survives
swap-chain unassign→reassign flaps, alongside the preserved publisher.
* host idd_push.rs: kick_dwm_compose demoted to documented last-resort
fallback for pre-stash drivers; a debug log now fires when a kick actually
runs so field logs show whether the stash path is working.
No proto change: the republish is an ordinary publish, so old host + new
driver and new host + old driver both keep working (the latter via the kick).

When a second client got its own virtual display mid-stream, the FIRST
client's IDD-push stream froze (video only; `new_fps=0 repeat_fps=240`
forever). Adding/removing/resizing a sibling display re-commits the CCD
topology, which makes the OS unassign+reassign the first monitor's IddCx
swap chain. `unassign_swap_chain` dropped the SwapChainProcessor, dropping
`run_core`'s local FramePublisher and closing the sealed-channel handles.
The fresh worker then polled the frame-channel stash — but that stash is
consumed once at session open, and the host only re-delivers on a ring
recreate (a descriptor change). The first monitor's descriptor didn't
change and WUDFHost stayed alive, so no watchdog fired: the driver drained
the swap chain without publishing and the host repeated its last frame
indefinitely. Confirmed twice on the .173 box (host.log 21:12 & 21:15).
Preserve the live FramePublisher across the flap instead of dropping it:
the host-owned ring (header/event/textures) it holds stays valid — only
the swap chain died.
- frame_transport.rs: FramePublisher records its render-adapter LUID +
exposes render_adapter().
- monitor.rs: MonitorObject.preserved_publisher + preserve_publisher()
(mirrors set_frame_channel) + take_preserved_publisher() (mirrors
take_frame_channel). Monitor teardown drops the stashed publisher and
closes its ring handles, so nothing leaks.
- swap_chain_processor.rs run_core: after SetDevice OK, re-adopt a
preserved publisher ONLY when the new swap chain renders on the same
LUID (same pooled Direct3DDevice → its context + opened textures are
valid); on loop exit, stash the publisher back on the monitor.
Safe: the old worker is fully joined (drop-outside-lock discipline)
before the new one runs, so no concurrent context use; a stale re-adopted
publisher is superseded by the existing is_stale() + has_frame_channel()
newest-wins checks at the loop top.
Verified clippy -D warnings clean on rustc 1.96.0 via a faithful mock
crate (the real crate needs the WDK to compile). Needs a driver rebuild +
reinstall on the host to take effect; not yet hardware-validated.

design/windows-parallel-virtual-displays.md (display-management Stage 7 / §6.6): N
simultaneously-live pf-vdisplay monitors, one sealed ring each, every idd-push-security
invariant preserved per-ring.
- proto v3: SharedHeader._pad → target_id — the ring NAMES its monitor, host-stamped
before the magic; the driver publisher refuses a cross-bound ring via the shared,
unit-tested frame::check_attach (new DRV_STATUS_BIND_FAIL — the gamepad pad_index
validation applied to frames, invariant #10); the host's wait_for_attach surfaces the
refusal loudly and self-checks its own stamp.
- manager: the one-monitor MgrState becomes a slot map keyed by the client's identity
slot (0 = anonymous/GameStream); per-slot reconnect + dead-WUDFHost preempts,
slot-scoped begin_idd_setup (a different identity is an admission question, never a
preempt), ONE device-level watchdog pinger, per-slot /display/state + /display/release.
- group topology: isolate_displays_ccd takes the managed target SET (a sibling slot is
never deactivated); SavedConfig + the DDC/PnP axes move to the group record (first-in
captures, last-out restores); desktop layout via CCD source origins from the pure
layout::arrange (auto-row default, manual pins win), re-applied on create + reconfigure.
- admission: the Windows separate→reject override now sits behind the
PUNKTFUNK_WIN_SEPARATE=1 validation hatch (the wedge it guarded is structurally gone —
a second identity gets its own monitor + ring; default flips in W5 after soak);
max_displays and NVENC session-unit budgets decline an unaffordable display AT
admission; kick_dwm_compose is process-globally throttled and per-display — cursor
jump + 35 ms dwell (a sub-tick jump composes nothing; DWM reads dirties from current
state at the next vsync tick).
On-glass on the RTX box: V1/V2/V4/V5/V6/V9 green — two paired clients on two monitors
streaming ~60 fps each with zero mismatches and zero bind failures, churn-hammer clean
(no 0x80070490), per-ring mode-change recreate leaves the sibling untouched, typed
budget rejection, fault-injected cross-bind refused loudly with the sibling undisturbed.
V7: WUDFHost-kill shared fate is clean; in-process device recovery is a known follow-up
(the retired-never-closed control handles block the adapter cycle — reset-pf-vdisplay.ps1
recovers). DWM composes two IDD monitors concurrently at 60 fps — the plan's
load-bearing unknown, answered yes.
Also carries the client-HDR EDID forwarding that shared this working tree
(Hello::display_hdr → AddRequest luminance tail → the monitor's CTA-861.3 HDR block,
PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_PEAK_NITS hatch) and the Deck client fixes (40 ms rumble keep-alive
with 1-LSB jitter, HDR self-diagnosing presenter warn, flatpak HDR env).

Frame ring (pf-vdisplay) and both gamepad SHM channels move off named Global\
objects (openable by any sibling LocalService) to UNNAMED sections/events whose
handles the host DuplicateHandles into the driver's verified WUDFHost with least
access — frame delivery over the SYSTEM+admins-only IOCTL_SET_FRAME_CHANNEL,
pads over a 32-byte named bootstrap mailbox (pid + handle value only, DoS-bounded;
HID minidrivers have no control device). Driver-validated pad_index kills
cross-pad redirects; v1↔v2 mixes fail closed with diagnosis logs on both sides.
Sibling-LocalService denial proven empirically (design/idd-push-security.md,
design/gamepad-channel-sealing.md).
Driver-side raw ops now live behind pf-umdf-util (checked shm accessors, the
forbid(unsafe_code) ChannelClient state machine, WDF request tokens) — the pad
drivers' logic is 100% safe Rust; whole drivers workspace clippy-gated in CI.
driver install --gamepad now sweeps SWD\punktfunk phantom devnodes: a re-created
SwDevice REVIVES the old devnode with its previously-bound driver (never
re-ranks), so an upgrade otherwise leaves the old driver serving — or, across
the v1→v2 fence, a dead pad (found live on the RTX box).
On-glass validated on the RTX 4090 box: frame path 7007 frames p50 2.06 ms
cross-machine; DualSense + XUSB "sealed pad channel mapped"/proto=2 attach via
both the test harness and a real streaming session; phantom-sweep repro.

Two phases of pf-vdisplay (IddCx virtual display) lifecycle work, both validated on-glass on the RTX box.
Phase 1 — fix the long-standing IOCTL_ADD 0x80070490 (ERROR_NOT_FOUND) wedge that ghost-monitor
slot-budget exhaustion produced under ADD/REMOVE churn (the reset-script/reboot recurring failure).
Validated: 43 reconnect-churn cycles, 0 wedges, monitor-node count flat at 1.
* driver: on IddCxMonitorArrival failure, tear the created-but-not-arrived monitor down with
WdfObjectDelete + reclaim its id — the asymmetric-with-the-create-failure-path leak that exhausted
the 16-monitor MaxMonitorsSupported budget; recover MONITOR_MODES from lock poisoning instead of
failing closed (defensive; the driver builds panic=abort).
* host: collapse the build-retry churn — hold ONE monitor lease across all build attempts and preempt
only on Lingering (not Active), so a cold start does 1 ADD not 8; reap not-present "punktfunk"
monitor PDOs on startup (the reset-script step-2 logic, in-process) and self-heal a detected
0x80070490 by reaping + retrying ADD; force-preempt a stuck-Active prior monitor on the
begin_idd_setup timeout (the safety net the Lingering-only preempt would otherwise drop).
Phase 2 — give each client (keyed by its cert FINGERPRINT) a STABLE virtual-monitor id (1..=15) so
Windows reapplies that client's saved per-monitor config (DPI SCALING) across reconnects, and two
clients never share/bleed config. Validated: distinct clients -> distinct ids (1, 2); the driver
honors the host's id (echoed resolved == preferred).
* proto: rename AddRequest._reserved -> preferred_monitor_id (offset 20) and AddReply._reserved ->
resolved_monitor_id (offset 12) — byte-compatible (offset asserts), NO PROTOCOL_VERSION bump, so a
pre-Phase-2 driver degrades gracefully to auto-id (the host detects it via the resolved echo).
* driver: create_monitor honors a host-supplied preferred id via resolve_id (range 1..=15, never
collides with a live monitor) and seeds the EDID serial + IddCx ConnectorIndex + ContainerId from it.
* host: a persisted LRU fingerprint->id map (%ProgramData%\punktfunk\pf-vdisplay-identity.json),
threaded to add_monitor via a set_client_identity no-op trait method (Linux/GameStream unaffected).

The driver zero-initialised C POD structs (IddCx/WDF descriptors) with 27
scattered `let mut x: T = unsafe { core::mem::zeroed() };`, each carrying its own
`// SAFETY` about the all-zero bit pattern being valid + the caller setting `.Size`
etc. right after.
Replace with one `pod_init!(T)` macro (in log.rs, reachable everywhere via the
existing `#[macro_use] mod log;` — same mechanism as `dbglog!`) that owns the
single `unsafe { zeroed::<T>() }` + the SAFETY rationale. All 27 sites
(adapter 6, callbacks 3, entry 4, monitor 10, swap_chain_processor 4) now read
`let mut x = pod_init!(T)`. Zero behavior change (mem::zeroed semantics identical);
the type is passed explicitly so no inference depends on the removed annotation.
27 `unsafe` blocks → 1. Driver still `deny(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)`-clean (the
macro expands to an explicit `unsafe {}`; the one nested-in-user-unsafe site is
fine — no `unused_unsafe` for macro-generated blocks). Driver-only (CI-gated);
adversarially reviewed (macro scoping, all sites, no leftover raw zeroed).

The shared host<->driver ABI crate already contains more than the virtual
display: the IDD-push frame ring + control plane AND the gamepad shared-memory
layouts (XusbShm / PadShm). "pf-vdisplay-proto" was a misnomer — the name now
represents all the drivers it serves.
Mechanical rename, no behavior change:
- git mv crates/pf-vdisplay-proto -> crates/pf-driver-proto (package name +
path-deps in the host crate and the driver workspace).
- pf_vdisplay_proto -> pf_driver_proto across host + driver Rust, both Cargo.lock
files, the workspace members, the CI path triggers (windows-drivers.yml), and
the docs/INF comments. The runtime Global\pfvd-* shared-object names are a
SEPARATE contract and are deliberately untouched (host<->driver name matching).
- The pf-vdisplay DRIVER crate + its INF service name (Root\pf_vdisplay,
UmdfService=pf_vdisplay, pf_vdisplay.dll) are unchanged — only the full
`pf_vdisplay_proto` token was replaced, never the `pf_vdisplay` driver name.
Linux-verified: cargo test -p pf-driver-proto (const size-asserts compile) +
cargo clippy -p punktfunk-host -D warnings clean; Cargo.lock regenerated. The
driver-workspace side (path-dep + imports + its Cargo.lock) is Windows-CI-gated.

The driver assigned each virtual monitor a monotonically-increasing NEXT_ID used
as the EDID serial / IddCx ConnectorIndex / container GUID, and never reclaimed
it on REMOVE. Under sustained ADD/REMOVE churn the connector index kept climbing,
so IddCx/PnP allocated a NEW OS target slot every cycle and orphaned the old one
(ghost "Generic Monitor (punktfunk)" nodes) until the adapter's target capacity
was exhausted and ADD failed 0x80070490 ERROR_NOT_FOUND.
Fix: `create_monitor` now allocates the LOWEST free id (`alloc_monitor_id`,
computed under the MONITOR_MODES lock with the push) instead of a counter, so a
departed monitor's id is reclaimed and a fresh ADD reuses its target slot rather
than orphaning it. With <= N live monitors the id stays bounded to 1..=N+1.
Deleted the now-unused NEXT_ID + AtomicU32/Ordering import.
CI-compile-gated only — the wedge reproduces solely under sustained churn on the
RTX box, so this needs an on-glass reconnect-storm A/B to confirm (box is
ephemeral/down). Marked on-glass-pending in windows-host-rewrite.md §4; keep
reset-pf-vdisplay.ps1 as the recovery until validated. NOT to be relied on (or

EvtCleanupCallback on the WDFDEVICE (entry.rs + callbacks::device_cleanup): on device removal (PnP/unload) drop every monitor's swap-chain worker via monitor::cleanup_for_device_removal (joins threads, IddCx-free — the framework tears the monitors down with the device). Worker threads no longer linger into teardown.
Single identity per session (create_monitor): a re-ADD of a still-live session_id departs the stale monitor first, so one session maps to exactly one monitor (no duplicate EDID/target).
DeviceContext-owned state (audit §2.5): documented decision NOT to migrate the globals to a Box/AtomicPtr device-owned allocation. The IddCx monitor/mode DDIs receive only an IddCx handle (never the WDFDEVICE/context), so the state MUST be globally reachable (upstream virtual-display-rs is a process-static for the same reason); the globals are already module-encapsulated; and with one devnode + UmdfHostProcessSharing=ProcessSharingDisabled they die with the host process on removal anyway. A pointer variant would only add a host-gone-watchdog-race use-after-free for zero benefit.
Verified: driver workspace builds clean on the RTX box (.173).

Audit §4.1: implement the host-gone watchdog — it was dead code (WATCHDOG_PINGS bumped but never sampled, no thread). Every IOCTL now bumps a liveness counter; a watchdog thread reap_orphaned()s monitors (created_at grace) if no IOCTL arrives within WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT_S, so a crashed/TerminateProcess'd host no longer leaves its virtual monitor + swap-chain worker + pooled D3D device wedged until the next CLEAR_ALL. Removes the false 'watchdog thread' comments.
Audit §4.2: implement SET_RENDER_ADAPTER (was STATUS_NOT_IMPLEMENTED) via IddCxAdapterSetRenderAdapter, so the host can pin the IDD render to the NVENC GPU on a hybrid iGPU+dGPU box (else the OS-picked iGPU makes the host ring textures un-openable -> DRV_STATUS_TEX_FAIL).
Audit §4.4: gate the world-writable C:\Users\Public\pfvd-driver.log behind debug builds / PFVD_DEBUG_LOG (a release build never writes it).
Audit §4.5: bounds-check the requested mode in IOCTL_ADD; compute display_info clock_rate in u64 + saturate (the old u32 refresh*(h+4)^2 overflowed/aborted the mode DDI for large modes).
Verified: driver workspace builds clean on the RTX box (WDK 26100 + LLVM 21.1.2, MSVC). On-glass functional validation of the watchdog/render-pin is a follow-up (needs a driver reinstall + session).

Audit pass over the new pf-vdisplay driver's unsafe surface: 92 per-site // SAFETY comments added
across adapter.rs / monitor.rs / entry.rs / callbacks.rs / swap_chain_processor.rs /
frame_transport.rs / direct_3d_device.rs (control.rs already had full coverage). COMMENTS ONLY — zero
logic, signature, or control-flow change (verified via git diff: every added line is a // SAFETY
comment or blank).
The dominant gap was the pervasive `core::mem::zeroed()` FFI-struct builds (IDDCX_*/WDF_*/
DISPLAYCONFIG_* C PODs whose all-zero bit pattern is a valid uninitialized/Invalid state, with the
required .Size/fields set immediately after) — each now carries a one-line // SAFETY. Plus explicit
notes on the two stack/local-pointer-into-FFI hazards (adapter.rs `version` ptr into
IddCxAdapterInitAsync; monitor.rs `edid` Vec ptr into IddCxMonitorCreate — both read synchronously
before the local drops) and the frame_transport.rs raw-HANDLE / mapped-header derefs + cleanup paths.
The already-justified Send/Sync wrappers (SendAdapter, CtxTypeInfo/DevCtxInfo, MonitorObject,
Sendable, FramePublisher) were audited — each already carried a // SAFETY. No site needed a code
change.
First slice of STEP 8 (the SudoVDA drop). Comments-only ⇒ build-neutral; windows-drivers.yml verifies
on the next runner build. Remaining STEP 8: re-vendor the installer's driver binary from the new
drivers/ tree (the shipping packaging/windows/pf-vdisplay/ binary is still built from the OLD oracle
tree with the SudoVDA-compat GUID — ABI-mismatched with the host's proto GUID), add an .inx to the
new tree, re-point scripts/README from vdisplay-driver/ to drivers/, flip the selector default to
pf-vdisplay, then delete the old oracle tree. Keep sudovda.rs (the runtime fallback + the
backend-neutral CCD helpers pf_vdisplay.rs reuses) and the WGC-relay/DDA secure path (the
secure-desktop gate is not yet passed on glass).

The pf-vdisplay driver now advertises HDR/FP16 and the full glass-to-glass HDR path works
end-to-end — validated LIVE: the Mac client connected to the .173 host WITH HDR (display_hdr=true,
FP16 ring -> NVENC P010). The STEP-3 assumption that FP16 needs a higher UmdfExtensions was WRONG:
IddCx0102 + CAN_PROCESS_FP16 + the *2 DDIs works (the oracle proved it; confirmed on-glass
IddCxAdapterInitAsync -> 0x0 WITH the FP16 cap set). Driver-only change — the host FP16-ring ->
NVENC-P010 path and the HDR EDID were already in place.
- adapter.rs: caps.Flags = IDDCX_ADAPTER_FLAGS_CAN_PROCESS_FP16.
- entry.rs: register the 6 *2/HDR callbacks (ParseMonitorDescription2, MonitorQueryTargetModes2,
AdapterCommitModes2, AdapterQueryTargetInfo, MonitorSetDefaultHdrMetaData, MonitorSetGammaRamp)
ALONGSIDE the v1 set (matching the oracle — CAN_PROCESS_FP16 OBLIGATES the *2 DDIs or the
framework rejects the adapter at init; STEP 3 rejected FP16 only because they weren't registered).
- callbacks.rs: parse_monitor_description2 + monitor_query_modes2 now fill IDDCX_MONITOR_MODE2 /
IDDCX_TARGET_MODE2 with BitsPerComponent (8|10 bpc RGB); query_target_info already reports
IDDCX_TARGET_CAPS_HIGH_COLOR_SPACE; set_default_hdr_metadata + set_gamma_ramp accept (the gamma
one is mandatory under FP16).
- monitor.rs: wire_bits() (Rgb 8|10, no YCbCr) + target_mode2().
- EDID + INF UNCHANGED (the EDID already carries the CTA-861.3 BT.2020 + ST.2084/PQ block; the INF
stays UmdfExtensions=IddCx0102).
Built via the ultracode flow (STEP-7 map workflow -> agent-implement -> box build [driver green] ->
deploy -> on-glass HDR). OPERATIONAL NOTE: do NOT Disable/Enable the IddCx devnode to reload it —
that leaves the adapter STOPPED in the persisted WUDFHost process (ADAPTER OnceLock survives), so
monitor-create then fails with 0xc00002b6 (INDIRECT_DISPLAY_DEVICE_STOPPED). Kill the pf_vdisplay
WUDFHost process (or reboot) for a clean adapter re-init.
This completes the pf-vdisplay rewrite STEP 0-7, all on-glass validated (loads, adapter inits,
monitor appears, swap-chain drain, IDD-push frames at ~235fps, and HDR). Remaining: STEP 8 (unsafe-
reduction + delete the old vdisplay-driver tree + the vendored SudoVDA driver + unbundle from the
installer = the SudoVDA drop).

The pf-vdisplay driver now consumes the OS swap-chain so a virtual monitor is a usable
display rather than a stalled one. Compiles + loads on-glass (no regression: adapter still
inits, Status=OK); adversarially reviewed — no blockers, the leak/deadlock invariants preserved.
- new swap_chain_processor.rs: a worker thread (MMCSS "Distribution") that binds the render D3D
device (IddCxSwapChainSetDevice, single-borrow 60x@50ms retry) then drains the swap-chain
(ReleaseAndAcquireBuffer2 -> FinishedProcessingFrame; E_PENDING waits 16ms on the surface
event). NO frame publisher yet (STEP 6). RAII terminate+join Drop; the load-bearing
top-of-loop terminate check (the oracle's reconnect-leak fix). Fixed a Rust-2021 disjoint-
capture bug: `.0` field access bypassed the Sendable Send wrapper -> rebind the whole wrappers.
- new direct_3d_device.rs: CreateDXGIFactory2 -> EnumAdapterByLuid(render LUID) -> D3D11CreateDevice;
a DEVICE_POOL of one Arc<Direct3DDevice> per render LUID (the NVIDIA-UMD-worker-thread leak fix).
- monitor.rs: MonitorObject gains swap_chain_processor; set/take helpers return it for the caller
to drop OUTSIDE the MONITOR_MODES lock (dropping joins the worker — must never happen under the
lock); remove_monitor/clear_all drop it before IddCxMonitorDeparture.
- callbacks.rs: assign_swap_chain spawns the processor (pooled device per RenderAdapterLuid;
WdfObjectDelete on D3D-init failure so the OS retries); unassign_swap_chain drops it. Fixed the
stale `panic = "abort"` doc (workspace is unwind; the extern "C" boundary aborts on unwind).
- Cargo.toml: windows 0.58 + thiserror (both already resolved in the driver lock). The 3 needed
swap-chain DDIs were already wrapped in wdk-iddcx; their HRESULT-shaped NTSTATUS is classified
by hand (hr>=0 success, 0x8000000A E_PENDING).
- Also rustfmt'd the whole driver workspace (it had never been driver-fmt'd).
Built via the ultracode flow: STEP-5 map workflow -> agent-implement -> box build (caught the
Send-capture bug) -> adversarial-verify-agent -> deploy (loads). Session-1 on-glass validation
(the drain loop servicing an ACTIVE monitor) is the next gate — assign_swap_chain only fires
under an interactive session. Note for STEP 6: target_id_for_object uses the MONITOR_MODES handle
lookup the oracle moved to a WDF context; revisit before target_id keys the shared frame ring.

The virtual-monitor lifecycle is now code-complete on the driver side (CI-green;
deployed — no load/adapter-init regression, Status=OK):
- new monitor.rs: the monitor/mode model (Mode/MonitorObject/MONITOR_MODES), ported from
upstream virtual-display-rs with guid:u128 -> session_id:u64. create_monitor builds an
EDID (serial=id) -> IddCxMonitorCreate -> IddCxMonitorArrival, stores the monitor, and
returns the OS target id + adapter LUID for AddReply. remove_monitor / clear_all depart
+ drop. display_info/target_mode build the DISPLAYCONFIG timing (the union videoStandard
u32 set directly — bindgen-API-agnostic, vs the oracle new_bitfield_1 transmute).
- callbacks.rs: parse_monitor_description (EDID-serial lookup -> count-then-fill
IDDCX_MONITOR_MODE) + monitor_query_modes (pointer-match -> IDDCX_TARGET_MODE) are real.
- control.rs: IOCTL_ADD -> create_monitor + AddReply, REMOVE -> remove_monitor, CLEAR_ALL
-> clear_all, via read_input/write_output_complete WDF buffer helpers. SET_RENDER_ADAPTER
still stubbed (hybrid-GPU pin, next) + the watchdog thread (next).
- DISPLAYCONFIG_* resolve at the wdk_sys root (pub use types::*), not iddcx.
Warnings are the STEP-7 *2/HDR stubs + created_at (read by the watchdog, next). The
on-glass "monitor appears at WxH@Hz" gate awaits the host switch to pf_vdisplay_proto.
