PUNKTFUNK_MAX_FPS caps how fast the compositor lets the game render. It
deliberately does NOT touch the session: the client still negotiates and
receives its full rate, because the encode loop re-encodes the held frame
whenever the compositor produced no new one, and a repeat of an unchanged
picture is an almost-empty P-frame. So a 60-capped game on a 120 Hz session
still puts 120 frames a second on the wire — and the GPU time the game gives
up goes to capture and encode instead, which is the point (on a laptop or a
handheld, it goes to heat and battery too).
Capping the stream would be a different and mostly unwanted feature: it
hands the client fewer frames than it asked for and saves the game's GPU
nothing.
gamescope is the compositor that has the lever, so it is the one that gets
it: the rate becomes --nested-refresh, which is what gamescope clamps the
game to. All three sessions we own take it — the bare spawn's -r, the
managed gamescope-session-plus wrapper's PF_HZ, and the SteamOS PATH shim's.
In the managed path the limit lands on PF_HZ alone and NOT on
CUSTOM_REFRESH_RATES, so the mode the session advertises stays the client's
— that is what makes games see the real refresh rather than the box's EDID.
Two scoping notes. Under gamescope the cap is the nested output's rate, so
everything it composites moves at it, not the game alone; there is only the
one output. And the attach path (PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_NODE) mirrors a
gamescope we do not own, so it has no lever to pull and is untouched.

Five pages asserted "gamescope's capture output is 8-bit" as a flat fact. It is
a fact about the STOCK binary, so say that instead, and say what to install to
change it: a new "HDR on gamescope" section covering the extra package, the two
knobs, what has to line up for a session to go HDR at all, and the two things
that surprise people — SDR content rides the same PQ stream at
`--hdr-sdr-content-nits`, and AMD/Intel HDR sessions currently lose the
composited pointer (the encode path that carries 10-bit is the one that cannot
blend it).
The roadmap's "parked / blocked" entry keeps the half that is still blocked
(Mutter's `RecordVirtual` is SDR-only through the GNOME 51 dev branch) and
drops the half that no longer is.
The stream chrome — stats OSD, capture hint, start banner, resize label —
was hardcoded at 14 px with 12/10/8 px insets. The overlay composites into
the swapchain 1:1 in PHYSICAL pixels, so on a 4K panel at 200 % all of it
rendered at half its intended physical size: fine on a 1080p monitor, a
squint on a HiDPI laptop.
FrameCtx now carries a scale — SDL's window display scale (DPI × the
display's content scale) times a PUNKTFUNK_OSD_SCALE preference — and every
metric moved into a `base` module that is multiplied by it. Re-read per
frame and quantized into the damage key, so dragging the window to a
differently-scaled monitor re-renders at the new size rather than keeping
the stale one. Sanitized because SDL returns 0.0 when it cannot resolve the
window's display, which would collapse the panel to nothing.
Two details worth keeping: the face is re-derived at the scaled size rather
than the canvas transformed, because Skia rasterizes glyphs at the
requested size where a magnified 14 px bitmap would be mush; and the long
capture hint is fit-clamped to the window — at 2× it is wider than a 1080p
screen, so scaling it naively would have traded a small OSD for a truncated
one. Linux and Windows share this path.

A box called `bazzite-htpc` had no way to present itself as "Living Room"
short of renaming the machine. The new knob overrides the name everywhere
a human sees it: the GameStream serverinfo <hostname> element and the
mDNS service instance name both adverts carry. Unset (the default) is the
machine's own hostname, exactly as before.
Free text is the point, so the DNS-level name is now a separate concern
from the display name. The instance label may contain spaces and accents;
an A-record target may not, and mdns-sd rejects the whole ServiceInfo if
the target is not a legal name — which would take discovery down rather
than merely look wrong. dns_label() sanitizes the target and passes an
already-legal name through byte-for-byte, so hosts without the override
advertise precisely what they always did. The display name loses `.` (it
would split the label, and clients derive the name as the first label of
the fullname, so "Ben's PC v1.2" would arrive as "Ben's PC v1") and is
capped at the 63-byte DNS-SD ceiling on a char boundary.

The console grew a "Streamed screen" card and the host grew a
PUNKTFUNK_CAPTURE_MONITOR knob and a list-monitors command, and the docs
knew about none of it — a control with no explanation anywhere.
virtual-displays.md gets the feature section: what it is for, that the
monitor is never touched, that its resolution wins and a client scales,
that a bad name is a hard error rather than a different screen, and that
there is no chooser dialog on any of the four backends (which is what
makes it work unattended). Plus the three troubleshooting entries the
shape of the feature predicts: settings that do nothing while mirroring,
a console card the env var has locked, and a pin that names no head.
host-cli.md documents list-monitors and mirror-test; configuration.md
gets the knob, including that it outranks the console on purpose;
running-as-a-service.md gets the desktop-session drop-in and states that
the host needs nothing exported to find its session.

The CCD isolate verifies "sole active desktop" at commit time and is never
checked again. On a hybrid Intel+NVIDIA box the internal panel is re-activated
moments later (the isolated topology is deliberately not saved to the CCD
database so teardown can restore the user's layout, and the post-isolate
resize/HDR churn — or the panel's own driver, or display-poller software —
re-resolves back to the stored layout). Proven on-glass: seconds after the
verify, CCD showed the panel ACTIVE beside the virtual display while the host
still believed it was exclusive — cursor and windows can land off-stream, and
the lock screen can land on the physical panel.
A group-scoped watchdog now re-queries every PUNKTFUNK_EXCLUSIVE_REASSERT_MS
(default 2 s, 0 disables) while an EXCLUSIVE isolate is live and re-issues the
isolate when a non-managed display crept back, logging who-is-fighting
escalation (3×WARN → 1×ERROR → DEBUG). Gated on a new GroupState.ccd_exclusive
flag so a Primary group's deliberately-lit panels are never "fixed". Cycles
take the state lock via try_lock with a sliced sleep, so teardown's stop+join
under the state lock cannot deadlock and is bounded by ~250 ms.

listGpus gains encoder_pin (PUNKTFUNK_ENCODER when it actually pins something —
unset/auto stay null), and the console's GPU card shows it: a muted note when
the pin is compatible, an amber warning naming the pinned vendor and the next
session's GPU when it contradicts the selection (the host overrides such a pin
at session open — without this field the selection just looked broken). Docs
updated to say the adapter wins.

Verified against nvEncodeAPI.h's own splitEncodeMode doc (user-prompted
— the audit's 'exclusive for HEVC' one-liner deserved checking):
- H.264: split 'is not applicable' — hard-DISABLE the mode so the
written config, CeilingKey, the split diagnostic log and the
rejection-retry stay truthful (the retry used to re-open a
byte-identical session after an H.264 'split rejection'). The libav
path's operator arm gains the codec gate its auto arm always had.
- HEVC: split 'not supported if … subframe mode' — when WE force split
(TWO/THREE/AUTO_FORCED, the 4K120 throughput lever), sub-frame yields
with a logged escape (PUNKTFUNK_SPLIT_ENCODE=0 chooses sub-frame).
⚠ Keyed on FORCED modes only, never != DISABLE: AUTO(0) is the
resolver's fallthrough for every sub-950Mpix session, and the wider
key would have disarmed the Phase-3 chunked-poll feature fleet-wide
(critic catch). Under AUTO the driver arbitrates — the shipped state.
- AV1: untouched — per-tile sub-frame + split are legal together.
The arbitration is a pure nvenc_core fn called by each backend BEFORE
the ladder, the ceiling key and the chunked-poll latch — all three see
the post-arbitration truth. A drop inside build_init_params would have
left poll_chunk busy-polling its whole budget every AU (numSlices stays
0 without reportSliceOffsets; both loop exits dead — critic catch).
Linux latches subframe_forced beside subframe_on at query_caps (no env
re-reads after open); Windows records the arbitrated state so
reconfigure presents exactly the params the open had (also closes the
pre-existing mid-session env-flip hazard there).
Truth-table tests in nvenc_core; PUNKTFUNK_NVENC_SUBFRAME documented
(it never was); PUNKTFUNK_SPLIT_ENCODE row updated.

Field report (Nobara 43 HTPC): switching the host to Steam Game Mode
mid-stream permanently black-screened the box. Live-proven root cause on
a Nobara repro VM: our takeover masks the box's gamescope-session-plus
unit, plasmalogin's Relogin=true then fails its session Exec repeatedly
and trips systemd's start limit within ~1 s — the display manager dies,
and our restore verb (unmask + user start) cannot bring a seatless
gamescope back. Only 'reset-failed + restart' of the DM recovers.
The takeover is now display-manager-flavor-aware:
- SDDM (Bazzite/SteamOS) keeps the proven mask+SIGKILL path unchanged.
- plasmalogin/unknown DMs never mask: with privilege (root or an
operator polkit rule scoped to the DM unit — documented) the host
stops the DM for the stream and restores it with reset-failed +
restart (PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD as fallback), recorded in the
persisted takeover state so a host crash still restores; without
privilege the managed takeover degrades to ATTACH and mirrors the
box's live Game Mode instead of destabilizing the seat. Both legs of
the privileged cycle live-verified on the repro VM (headless managed
session works with zero login sessions; render nodes are 0666).
A loaded-but-inactive leftover instance never triggers the DM stop.
Companion fixes from the same triage:
- ensure_box_gamescope_mode gains the attach-only rebuild-probe guard
both managed paths already had (stale post-capture-loss detection
restarted the box's unit), and no longer re-modes a box that drives a
physical display — attach mirrors on-glass; re-mode is the
headless-box model.
- Capture-loss rebuilds targeting gamescope get a 100 s budget: the
40 s budget expired inside the first 45 s Steam-cold-start launch
attempt, a guaranteed single-shot failure.
- A PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR pin now WARNs once per capture loss when the
live session no longer matches it (the pin disables
session-following — the reporter's original stream-death trigger).
- A managed session that took nothing over (client gamescope pin beside
a live desktop) is stopped on disconnect instead of being orphaned
forever.

Field triage (Nobara, Discord): the kde.md starter host.env told desktop
users to set PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=kwin, which PINS the backend — detect()
short-circuits and the capture-loss rebuild never re-detects — so a
mid-stream switch to Game Mode killed the stream instead of following it.
A follow-up hardcoded XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 anchor broke PipeWire
for any non-1000 uid (pw audio connect: Creation failed).
Revamp across every starter/example/reference:
- Desktop starters (kde/gnome/hyprland/sway) shrink to
PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE=virtual + an explicit warning that pinning
disables session-following; forcing a backend is CI/appliance-only.
- host.env.example: rewritten around auto-detection; anchors demoted to a
commented ssh/cron-only block with the uid trap spelled out; the
gamescope ATTACH/MANAGED knobs documented (previously missing);
case-sensitivity called out.
- packaging/bazzite/host.env + README: drop the uid-1000 anchors (a
systemctl --user service inherits/derives them); README's stale
PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR=gamescope-era template synced to the real one.
- packaging/kde/host.env: loud APPLIANCE-ONLY header (it pins on purpose).
- configuration.md: session-anchors section inverted to "leave unset",
compositor row states the pin consequence, case-sensitivity note.
- troubleshooting.md: new "session fails right after editing host.env"
section (case, wrong-uid anchors, stale pin, restart-to-apply).
- gamescope.md/bazzite.md: attach/managed descriptions match current
behavior (managed is the infra-detected default; attach re-modes a
box-owned session to the client's resolution).

Lifts the ~100 Mbps decrypt ceiling on clients without hardware AES — the
armv7 soft-AES targets (webOS TVs), where AES-128-GCM resolves to fixsliced
software AES + software GHASH (~50-100 cpb) while ChaCha20-Poly1305's ARX
construction runs ~10-17 cpb portable, a 4-7x lift that PyroWave-on-TV needs
(design/chacha20-session-cipher.md).
Phase 1 (core crypto, no wire change): SessionKey merges cipher choice and
key material (invalid combinations unrepresentable, zeroize + redacted-Debug
discipline kept); SessionCrypto dispatches both aead-0.5 ciphers per call —
the salt||seq nonce scheme, per-direction salts, seq-as-AAD and replay
window carry over verbatim (same 96-bit nonce / 16-byte tag, const-asserted).
Config.key becomes SessionKey; validate's zero-key rejection follows the
active variant. The C ABI keeps its fixed 16-byte key mapped to AES — no
ABI_VERSION bump.
Phase 2 (negotiation): VIDEO_CAP_CHACHA20 (0x40) — support-plus-request in
one bit, the VIDEO_CAP_444 precedent. Welcome grows cipher@68 +
key_chacha@69..101, emitted only when non-zero so an AES session's Welcome
stays byte-identical to the pre-cipher form; decode is fail-closed (short
key or unknown id -> Err, never a silent AES fallback). No WIRE_VERSION
bump; downgrade resistance inherited from the pinned-TLS control channel.
Phase 3 (host): grant only when the client advertised the bit and the
PUNKTFUNK_CHACHA20 kill-switch (default on, documented) allows; fresh
32-byte per-session key from the same RNG discipline, legacy key field
stays independently random; resolved cipher logged at session start.
Verification: seal/open suites parameterized over both ciphers + a
cross-cipher tamper case; Welcome roundtrip/truncation/fail-closed tests;
ChaCha lossy-loopback soak (loss/replay is cipher-independent); bench
gains _chacha20 series (AES ids unchanged for CI history) — host-side
sealing line-rate-trivial on both x86 (~640 MiB/s) and Apple Silicon
(~535 MiB/s). punktfunk-probe drives the interop matrix via
PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CHACHA20=1 and logs the negotiated cipher.
Phase 4 (pf-webos pin bump + unconditional cap bit) follows the next
core release.

Intel's Windows driver advertises Vulkan Video (Arc drivers since 2023), so
the capability gate alone no longer keeps Intel off FFmpeg-Vulkan — and that
combination is broken in the field (B580 report: strobing + 7.2 ms p50
decodes at 4K120) and on glass (Arc Pro iGPU: 29-33 ms p50 decodes at 4K60
where D3D11VA does 2.5 ms on the SAME GPU). Mirror the Linux vendor order on
Windows: NVIDIA/AMD keep Vulkan Video first, Intel/unknown take D3D11VA
first; vulkan stays reachable by explicit preference and as auto's fallback.
Also:
- Vulkan→D3D11VA mid-session demotion rung (the Windows analog of Linux's
Vulkan→VAAPI rung) — a failing Vulkan backend lands on hardware, not on
software, which cannot survive 4K120.
- The demotion streak now needs 1 s of age as well as 3 consecutive errors:
a startup loss burst produced 3 errors in 20 ms and stranded the session
on software decode (one-way) before the IDR requested on the first error
could possibly arrive — live-hit on the Intel iGPU leg.
- Stale "Intel's Windows driver has no Vulkan Video" comments corrected,
docs updated to the per-vendor order, vendor-order test extended with
discrete/iGPU Arc cases.
Verified on an Arc Pro iGPU + RTX 3500 Ada laptop against a CachyOS/NVENC
host: auto now picks d3d11va on Intel (60 fps, 2.5-2.8 ms decode, e2e 26 ms
vs 50 ms before) and still picks vulkan on NVIDIA. 27/27 pf-client-core
tests, clippy clean.

GNOME 50 (Mutter MR 4928, PipeWire >= 1.6) added HDR screen sharing for
monitor streams: 10-bit PQ formats (xRGB_210LE/xBGR_210LE) with MANDATORY
BT.2020 + SMPTE-2084 colorimetry props, advertised while the mirrored
monitor is in BT.2100 colour mode. Wire the Linux host into it end-to-end
on the GameStream desktop-mirror path (PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE=portal):
* pf-frame: PixelFormat::X2Rgb10/X2Bgr10 (DRM XR30/XB30; X2Bgr10 is the
Windows Rgb10a2 layout) + fourccs.
* pf-capture: want_hdr portal offer — HDR-only LINEAR-dmabuf pods with
MANDATORY PQ/BT.2020 props (SHM excluded: Mutter's SHM record path
paints 8-bit ARGB32 regardless of format; tiled excluded: the EGL
de-tile blit is 8-bit RGBA8), negotiated-colorimetry parse, generic
HDR10 hdr_meta(), packed-10-bit CPU cursor blend, a process-wide SDR
downgrade latch on negotiation timeout, and a DisplayConfig BT.2100
colour-mode probe (gnome_hdr_monitor_active).
* pf-encode: libav NVENC X2RGB10->P010 swscale (BT.2020 limited) ->
HEVC Main10 / 10-bit AV1 with PQ VUI; VAAPI 10-bit on both paths (CPU
P010 upload + dmabuf XR30 scale_vaapi p010/bt2020); can_encode_10bit
now probes for real on Linux; 10-bit sessions route around the
8-bit-only Vulkan-video/direct-NVENC backends.
* GameStream: host_hdr_capable() Linux arm, live monitor-HDR check at
RTSP honor time, capturer-pool reuse keyed on HDR-ness, gs_bit_depth
covers the new formats. New `punktfunk-host hdr-probe` diagnostic and
a PUNKTFUNK_SPIKE_HDR spike lever.
* Native plane stays honestly 8-bit via capturer_supports_hdr(): Mutter
RecordVirtual streams are SDR-only upstream (GNOME 50 and 51-dev), so
virtual-display sources cannot deliver HDR yet.
Validated on the RTX 5070 Ti (GNOME 50.3 / PipeWire 1.6.8): the Main10
probes pass and the ignored nvenc_hdr10_smoke GPU test emits an IDR that
ffprobe reads as Main 10 / yuv420p10le / bt2020nc / smpte2084 / limited.
Live HDR capture negotiation still needs an HDR monitor on glass; VAAPI
10-bit needs the AMD box.

The 2026 Steam Controller (Valve "Ibex" / SDL "Triton") captured on an
Android client is passed through AS-IS: the host presents a virtual pad
with the real wired identity (28DE:1302) and mirrors the physical pad's
raw HID reports, so Steam on the host drives it over hidraw exactly like
the real thing — trackpads, gyro, paddles, and its rumble/settings writes
flow back onto the physical controller. Protocol ground truth: SDL's
Valve-maintained SDL_hidapi_steam_triton.c + steam/controller_structs.h.
Core:
- GamepadPref::SteamController2 (wire byte 9; names steamcontroller2/
sc2/ibex) + PUNKTFUNK_GAMEPAD_STEAMCONTROLLER2 in the C ABI.
- Raw HID planes: RichInput::HidReport (0xCC/0x04, client→host input
reports verbatim, Copy fixed-64 body) and HidOutput::HidRaw (0xCD/0x05,
host→client feature/output writes for replay). Best-effort is sound by
the device protocol's own design (rumble re-sent every ~40 ms, settings
every ~3 s — losses self-heal); HidRaw bypasses hidout dedup for
exactly that reason.
Host (Linux):
- triton_proto.rs + steam_controller2.rs: Triton2Manager UHID backend —
no kernel driver binds the PID (hidraw only; Steam Input is the
consumer), raw mirroring with a typed-fallback 0x42 synthesizer until
the first raw report, SET_REPORT ack + raw forward, canned GET_REPORT
serial reply, rumble also parsed onto the universal 0xCA plane (phone
mirror). Rides the uhid + 28DE-conflict degrades; UHID promotion by
Steam is flagged in the creation log (usbip transport is the known
follow-up if Steam ignores Interface:-1 devices for Triton too).
Android:
- Sc2UsbLink (wired/Puck: vendor-interface claim detaches the OS driver,
interrupt read loop, lizard-off on the watchdog cadence, raw replay via
interrupt-OUT / SET_REPORT with hidapi report-id framing) and Sc2BleLink
(Valve vendor GATT service, notify subscribe machine, 0x45 re-framing,
HIGH connection priority).
- Sc2Capture orchestrator: raw plane + typed mirror (exit chord + host
degrade paths keep working) on a GamepadRouter external slot; raw
return path via GamepadFeedback.onHidRaw.
- nativeSendPadHidReport JNI (direct ByteBuffer, no per-report copy),
hidout raw decode, usb-host/BLUETOOTH_CONNECT manifest bits, opt-out
settings toggle, StreamScreen engagement incl. the USB permission flow.
Verified: core 149 + host 312 tests green on Linux (.21), on-box uhid
smoke creates/mirrors/tears down the virtual 28DE:1302, C ABI harness
round-trips, Android compileDebugKotlin green. On-glass with the real
controller owed.

Mesa now exposes Vulkan Video decode queues by default (and the session
binary opts RADV in for the Deck's sake), which silently moved every desktop
AMD/Intel box onto FFmpeg-Vulkan-on-Mesa under `auto` — user-reported
(CachyOS/KDE) to judder or error-streak into the software demotion while an
explicit VAAPI pick streams perfectly. Auto's hardware order is now
device-aware (`VulkanDecodeDevice::prefer_vulkan_over_vaapi`, fed
vendor id + device name by the presenter): Vulkan-first stays only where it
is the established right answer — NVIDIA (no usable VAAPI) and the Deck's
VanGogh (VAAPI dmabuf import chroma-fringes) — and everything else gets the
battle-tested zero-copy VAAPI first, with Vulkan as its fallback.
A mid-session Vulkan failure streak now also demotes to VAAPI before
software, so a broken Mesa Vulkan path can never strand a box with a
perfectly good VAAPI driver on CPU decode.
The GTK shell's decoder setting gains the missing "Vulkan Video" option
(values now mirror the console UI's auto/vulkan/vaapi/software) and drops
its pre-Vulkan "Automatic (VAAPI → software)" label.
Verified on the RTX 5070 Ti box (loopback session, auto → "Vulkan Video
hardware decode active", 60 fps); policy locked by unit test; clippy -D
warnings + pf-client-core/pf-presenter tests green on Linux.

- REPLAY_WINDOW 32768 -> 131072: the anti-replay bitmap covered the
120 ms loss window only to ~2 Gbps; the client now delivers ~4.8 Gbps
wire, where a late-but-valid Wi-Fi-retried datagram would have been
dropped as 'older than the window' — false loss. 16 KiB/session
covers ~12 Gbps.
- RECV_BATCH 32 -> 128: syscall rate stays ~3.4k/s at 430k pkt/s and
each pump iteration drains the kernel buffer deeper (ring 64->256 KB,
client sessions only). flush_backlog's iteration cap rescaled to keep
its ~190 MB guard equivalent.
- PUNKTFUNK_GSO gate is now value-aware: '=0' used to ENABLE GSO on
Linux (presence check) while disabling Windows USO. GSO stays OPT-IN,
deliberately: A/B'd twice today — it cuts send-thread CPU ~30% but
its 16-packet line-rate trains cost delivered throughput on a
constrained fabric (2.5GbE-hop pair: peak 2453 -> 1908 Mbps and 0.4%
loss at a rate sendmmsg carries clean). Flipping the default belongs
with pace-aware chunk spacing (plan Phase 1.2/1.3). docs-site row
corrected to match.

The N4 GO verdict, productized. GamepadPref::SteamDeck on a Windows host
now builds a real virtual Deck instead of folding to DualSense: games
get native Deck glyphs + both trackpads + gyro + all four back grips
through Steam Input's own remapping.
- steam_deck_windows.rs: DeckWinPad/DeckWinProto/SteamDeckWindowsManager
over the sealed shm channel, sharing the whole Linux Deck codec
(steam_proto now compiles on Windows too — it was already pure). The
SwDevice identity carries usb_mi: Some(2): the &MI_02 hardware-id
token hidclass mirrors into the HID child and Steam parses as the
wired controller interface — the promotion gate.
- Driver: DEVTYPE_STEAMDECK (3) graduates from the spike — SET_FEATURE
0xEB rumble / 0x8F haptic pulses are republished to the host through
the output slot (report-id-0 prefixed, so parse_steam_output sees the
Linux wire shape), and the 0xAE/GET_STRING serial + 0x83 unit id are
per-pad (read from the section's pad_index; PFDK<unit-id> matches
steam_proto::deck_serial).
- Router: SteamDeck arms in the Windows Pads paths; pick_gamepad flips
SteamDeck-if-windows -> SteamDeck (the DualSense fold retires);
dualsense-windows-test grows --deck.
ON-GLASS VALIDATED on .173 (rebuilt signed driver 9.9.0714.12xx
installed, Steam live): the manager-created pad (index 1) enumerates
with per-pad serial PFDK50460001, Steam logs Interface: 2 ->
'!! Steam controller device opened' -> 'Steam Controller reserving
XInput slot 0' -> PollState 2 (actively polling our cycling input
frames) -> mapping activated; clean teardown on exit. Rumble round-trip
through a real game remains an on-glass debt (nothing sent 0xEB during
the idle hold).
Known gap vs Linux: no physical-Steam-controller conflict degrade on
Windows yet (degrade_steam_on_conflict is Linux-only — /sys scan); a
Windows equivalent needs SetupDi enumeration and is deferred.
Verified: .21 clippy -D warnings + 304/0 tests + fmt --all; .133 clippy
-D warnings + the WDK driver-workspace check.

The Vulkan path's receive_frame returns at SUBMISSION (~0.1 ms) — the
hardware decodes asynchronously, so the decode stat was truthful but
measured the wrong boundary. The pump now ships the frame to the
presenter FIRST, then waits the frame's timeline fence (vkWaitSemaphores
resolved through the shared device's proc chain) and stamps
received→decode-COMPLETE — true NVDEC time at zero pipeline cost, since
the presenter's own GPU wait is what actually gates sampling. Software/
VAAPI keep their synchronous stamps.
Also: Alt+Enter joins F11 as the fullscreen toggle (some keyboards' Fn
layer sends a media key for plain F11 — observed on glass as
'F11 only works with shift'); the shell's shortcuts panel lists both.

On-glass A/B on the Ryzen 7000 iGPU (1080p120 HDR P010, hevc_amf,
PUNKTFUNK_PERF stage split): the system-memory readback costs the encode
thread 2.7-2.9 ms p50 (6.6 ms p99) per frame in submit; the zero-copy D3D11
pool path does the same work in 0.26 ms p50 (0.5 ms p99) — and on an iGPU the
readback also burns the shared memory bandwidth the game needs. The docs-site
already promised "on by default ... D3D11 on Windows" since the Linux flip
(9814368 was Linux-only); the Windows code now delivers it.
PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY becomes a tri-state override: unset defers to a per-vendor
default in zerocopy_enabled(vendor) — ON for AMF (validated above; open
failures still fall back to system-memory readback), OFF for QSV until it is
validated on Intel glass (the fallback only catches *setup* errors; a QSV
derive that opens but maps wrong would corrupt silently, so probe-never-assume
applies). Explicit values force either way: 0|false|off|no = readback,
anything else = zero-copy, so the old presence-style =1 keeps working.

Now that the per-capture worker subprocess makes an NVENC EGL/CUDA driver
fault survivable (design/zerocopy-worker-isolation.md), the reason the NVENC
zero-copy path stayed opt-in is gone. zerocopy::enabled() now defaults ON for
both GPU backends (was ON VAAPI / OFF NVENC). Fallbacks are intact: VAAPI's
one-shot CPU auto-downgrade (VAAPI-gated, never trips for NVENC) and NVENC's
per-capture fallback + worker-death latch.
Reframe the shipped host.env examples and setup guides to rely on the default
rather than force PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY=1 (an explicit =1 skips the VAAPI
auto-downgrade).

Split the docs' single distro×desktop axis (ubuntu-gnome / ubuntu-kde / fedora-kde) into two,
which deduplicates the shared mechanics and scales to distros that run several desktops (Arch):
- Install the host — per distro/OS (ubuntu, fedora, arch, bazzite, steamos-host, windows-host):
GPU driver + package + input group, then a canonical "Configure your desktop" funnel.
- Configure your desktop — per compositor (kde, gnome, gamescope, sway): host.env, compositor
quirks, the headless session, and starting the host.
New shared web-console page (enable · login password · arm pairing) removes the console/password
block that was copy-pasted across all seven host pages. Merged ubuntu-gnome + ubuntu-kde into
ubuntu; renamed fedora-kde to fedora; kept bazzite and steamos-host as dedicated appliance guides
(trimmed of duplication). Moved the KWin headless session, the GNOME EGL/lock traps, and the
gamescope attach/managed model out of the distro pages onto their compositor pages.
Fixed while restructuring: distro-specific paths on kde (kde-desktop-setup.sh is Fedora/Bazzite-only;
the .deb ships host.env.kde under /usr/share/punktfunk-host), the interactive "start the host" step
that was lost in the merge, sway over-claiming Hyprland, and a pre-existing broken anchor in
how-it-works.
Removal of the three old pages was captured by the preceding commit b28ddfc (a concurrent commit
swept up the staged git-rm); the net docs tree is correct. Fumadocs build + internal link/anchor
check green.

The >60 Hz virtual-monitor path (RecordVirtual "modes" with the client's exact WxH@Hz)
was gated behind PUNKTFUNK_MUTTER_VIRTUAL_REFRESH, default OFF, after a high-refresh
virtual CRTC SIGSEGV'd gnome-shell on session teardown. That crash was since fixed by
stopping the screencast before any monitor reconfig, so the gate is dead weight — and a
silent footgun: every non-headless GNOME client was capped at Mutter's PipeWire-derived
60 Hz unless they knew the hidden flag.
Make it the default: the custom-mode path now runs whenever mode.refresh_hz > 60 (≤60 Hz
stays byte-identical to before — Mutter's 60 Hz default is already correct), and the
virtual_refresh_enabled() env read is removed. Docs updated (configuration.md env table,
vrr-plan.md reference).

A user-configurable policy layer above the per-compositor VirtualDisplay
backends: keep-alive, topology, conflict, identity, layout, max-displays —
persisted to display-settings.json, editable from the web console, applied
per connect. Design: design/display-management.md.
Stage 0 stands up the surface and wires the two behaviors the existing code
can already express — the Windows monitor linger duration and the
"make the streamed output the sole desktop" topology — through it; every
other option is stored + echoed but not yet enforced (later stages). An
unconfigured host (no display-settings.json) keeps today's exact behavior.
- vdisplay/policy.rs: pure DisplayPolicy + 5 presets + JSON store (gpu-settings
pattern) + EffectivePolicy; 9 unit tests.
- vdisplay.rs: resolve_topology(Auto); apply_session_env drives *_VIRTUAL_PRIMARY
from the policy only when a settings file exists.
- windows/manager.rs: linger_ms() + should_isolate() read the policy when configured.
- mgmt: GET/PUT /api/v1/display/settings (bearer-only); PUT rejects keep_alive
forever until the lifecycle stage. OpenAPI regenerated.
- web console: Host → Virtual displays card (preset picker + custom fields); en+de.
- docs-site: virtual-displays.md + configuration.md cross-links.

Five verified findings from the IDD-push/pf-vdisplay deep audit:
- Keyed-mutex acquire (BOTH endpoints): AcquireSync returns WAIT_TIMEOUT
(0x102) / WAIT_ABANDONED (0x80) as SUCCESS-severity HRESULTs, which the
windows-rs Result wrapper erases — a busy slot read as "acquired", so
driver and host could race the same ring texture (torn frames) and the
designed busy-skip backpressure was dead code. Both sides now classify
the raw vtable HRESULT; WAIT_ABANDONED counts as acquired (ownership
transfers — refusing it would wedge the slot forever).
- Host SDR hot path leaked one ID3D11VideoProcessorInputView per converted
frame: the D3D11_VIDEO_PROCESSOR_STREAM ManuallyDrop field suppressed the
release after VideoProcessorBlt. Released by hand now, success or not.
- Driver leaked IddCx's per-acquire surface reference (from_raw_borrowed on
a TRANSFERRED reference — the MS sample Attach/Reset's it): the swap-chain
surface set survived swap-chain destruction, the likely true root cause of
the ~50 MB-per-reconnect VRAM loss that device pooling only mitigated.
Now adopted via from_raw (publisher or not) and dropped pre-Finished.
- PUNKTFUNK_IDD_PUSH removed: capture is unconditionally IDD-push, but the
vdisplay manager still gated the lingering-monitor preempt (and render
pin) on the knob, whose default was OFF — dev/CLI runs reused a lingering
monitor whose IddCx swap-chain is dead (black reconnect). The preempt and
the render-GPU pin are now unconditional; host.env comments no longer
promise the removed DDA/WGC fallback.
- Driver D3D device: dropped D3D11_CREATE_DEVICE_SINGLETHREADED (unsound
since DEVICE_POOL shares one device across processors) and the pooled
immediate context is now SetMultithreadProtected — two concurrent
monitors' workers otherwise race an unlocked context (UB in the UMD).
No wire-contract change (pf-driver-proto untouched); the driver fixes take
effect on the next pf-vdisplay redeploy.

Two disk-write fixes:
- pf-xusb/pf-dualsense no longer write C:\Users\Public\pf*-driver.log
unconditionally — the file log is now opt-in (debug builds, or the
PFXUSB_DEBUG_LOG / PFDS_DEBUG_LOG system env var), mirroring the audit-§4.4
fix pf-vdisplay already got: a release driver never writes the world-writable
Public file (info-leak/DoS surface), and the per-report OUTPUT/SET_STATE hex
dumps stop being a sustained per-rumble disk-write path during gameplay.
OutputDebugStringA stays unconditional; the host's driver-silence WARN and
the gamepad-driver-health failure-mode table now say the log is opt-in.
- service.log/host.log get one-generation rotation: at each (re)open a file
over 10 MB is renamed to .old, so a crash-restart loop or a RUST_LOG=debug
left in host.env can't grow the append-forever logs without bound. Rotation
runs only before an open (never under a live appender — host.log's handle
lacks FILE_SHARE_DELETE, so a racing rename harmlessly fails).
Windows CI compile/clippy pending (drivers workspace + host are not
Linux-cross-checkable); rides along with the next pad-driver redeploy.

Adds a client-selectable **preferred codec** and wires the core + ABI + probe + Linux client to
negotiate and decode it. (Windows/Apple/Android follow in 2b.)
**Core:**
- `Hello.preferred_codec` (a single CODEC_* bit, 0 = auto) — a soft hint appended after
`video_codecs`. `resolve_codec(client, host, preferred)` now honors the preference when the host
can also emit it, else falls back to precedence (HEVC > AV1 > H.264). Roundtrip + preference tests.
- `NativeClient::connect` takes `video_codecs` + `preferred_codec`; `NativeClient.codec` exposes the
resolved `Welcome.codec`.
- ABI: `punktfunk_connect_ex7` (adds the two codec params; `ex6` delegates to it advertising
HEVC-only) + `punktfunk_connection_codec` getter + `PUNKTFUNK_CODEC_{H264,HEVC,AV1}` constants
(drift-guarded against the wire values). Header regenerated.
**Host:** passes `hello.preferred_codec` into `resolve_codec`.
**probe:** `--codec h264|hevc|av1|auto` sets the preference (still advertises it can decode all
three); the dump extension already follows the resolved codec.
**Linux client:** advertises the codecs FFmpeg can actually decode (`decodable_codecs()`), threads
the user's `codec` setting as the preference, and builds the decoder — both the software and VAAPI
paths, plus the mid-session VAAPI→software demotion — from the negotiated `Welcome.codec` instead of
hardcoding HEVC. New "Video codec" dropdown in Preferences (Automatic/HEVC/H.264/AV1).
Live-validated on the dev box: probe `--codec hevc` against a software (H.264-only) host resolves to
H.264 (graceful soft-preference fallback), no failure. clippy + core (57) + host (133) tests green.

Follows the security audit (#5/#9): the GameStream-compat plane carries inherent on-path weaknesses
that can't be fixed on the wire without breaking stock Moonlight — its pairing runs over plain HTTP
(#9, MITM-able during the pairing window) and its legacy control encryption can reuse GCM nonces (#5,
a passive eavesdropper can recover/forge input). The native punktfunk/1 plane (SPAKE2 PIN pairing +
per-direction AEAD nonces) has neither. So flip the default to secure-by-default:
- `serve` → native punktfunk/1 plane + management API ONLY (no GameStream surface).
- `serve --gamestream` → ALSO the GameStream/Moonlight-compat planes (nvhttp pairing, RTSP, ENet
control, _nvstream mDNS). Opt-in, logged with a trusted-LAN caveat. `--moonlight` is an alias.
- The native plane is now ALWAYS on in `serve` (`--native` is a kept-for-compat no-op); the unified
GameStream+native host is `serve --gamestream`.
`gamestream::serve` gates the GameStream spawns (nvhttp/rtsp/control/mdns) on the flag; the native
plane + mgmt + native-pairing handle always run.
To avoid silently regressing validated Moonlight deployments, the explicit deployment configs PRESERVE
Moonlight via `--gamestream` (each documents dropping it for a secure native-only host): the Linux
systemd unit, the Steam Deck installer, and the Windows service default (DEFAULT_HOST_CMD). The bare
`serve` default (new/manual use) is secure.
Docs swept to match (host-cli, moonlight, quickstart, install, packaging READMEs, CLAUDE.md, README,
…): Moonlight setup now instructs `--gamestream`; native/console refs use bare `serve`. OpenAPI
regenerated (a stale "run `serve --native`" string). fmt + clippy clean; 94 host tests green.

Client loss-recovery (video froze and never recovered after a brief drop):
- Export punktfunk_connection_frames_dropped through the C ABI (the core already
tracked it for the client keyframe-recovery loop; it was never reachable from
the ABI clients). Regenerated punktfunk_core.h.
- Apple (StreamPump + Stage2Pipeline) and Android (decode.rs) now poll
frames_dropped and request a keyframe when it climbs -- the same loss-driven
recovery Linux/Windows already had. Under infinite GOP the decoder silently
conceals reference-missing frames, so the decode-error trigger rarely fires.
Apple rumble robustness (worked then went spotty -- DualSense + Xbox):
- Add CHHapticEngine stopped/reset handlers (rebuild on app background / audio
interruption / server reset) and drop the permanent `broken` latch on a
transient drive failure; latch only when the controller truly has no haptics.
- Surface swallowed SDL set_rumble errors on Linux/Windows + diagnostic logging.
Verified: cargo build/clippy/fmt --workspace, C-ABI harness, header drift.
Not runnable on this box (verify in CI): Gitea workflows, gradle/Android,
flatpak, Swift/decky.

- Host Setup: Requirements, then clean per-platform guides — Ubuntu GNOME,
Ubuntu KDE, Fedora KDE (new), Bazzite (rewritten) — plus Running as a Service
(desktop / headless GNOME / headless KDE).
- Connecting: Clients overview, Moonlight, Pairing & Trust.
- Configuration: host.env reference, Host CLI, Troubleshooting.
- The dev/design notes (architecture, roadmap, the deferred design specs, CI)
move to a clearly-separated "Project & Internals" nav section.
Removes the superseded box-specific pages (gnome-box, headless-box, linux-setup,
overview). status.md (the internal progress tracker, with box IPs) is kept as a
file but dropped from the public nav. Site builds clean.
