enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 1f59498c5c fix(host/linux): a no-channel session composites the metadata cursor — Mutter never embeds on a virtual stream
The capture-latched client (console.rs latched_mouse) never advertises
CLIENT_CAP_CURSOR, so its session resolved cursor_blend=false and asked
Mutter to EMBED the pointer. On a Mutter virtual stream that is a
fiction: since Mutter 48 (7ff5334a, hw-cursor inhibition removed) the
software cursor overlay is suppressed stage-globally whenever any
physical head realizes a HW cursor — dmabuf-recorded frames blit the
view without a pointer, and cursor-only motion schedules no re-record
either (mutter#4939). Probed on-glass on Mutter 50.3: embedded +
relative motion = frozen frame counter; SPA_META_Cursor positions kept
flowing in the same setup.

So the no-channel session now takes the path that was verified end to
end: cursor-as-metadata + the host composites, permanently — the same
arm a channel session lands in after its capture-model flip. Embedded
remains only the can't-blend fallback (libav VAAPI/NVENC, software).

- session_plan::cursor_blend_for grows the no-channel arm (codec +
  depth in, the same CUDA-payload prediction handshake makes);
  gamescope excluded so patch-2+ keeps its native-NV12 zero-copy shape
- the encode loop's composite refresh + one-shot breadcrumbs now cover
  the no-channel session; the park schedule keeps retrying while its
  composite is starved (relative-only clients cannot park themselves)
- the compositor retarget re-applies set_hw_cursor — the rebuilt
  display used to come up EMBEDDED even for channel sessions
- the GameStream virtual source takes the same rule (it never has a
  channel); its stream_body blend flag mirrors the request
- punktfunk-probe grows --cursor-nochannel (the latched-capture client,
  headless); cursor-probe grows --dump (PPM frames + a content-change
  counter, the pixel evidence the embedded A/B lacked)

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 a8744b98d1 feat(devtools): reproduce the capture-model cursor path without a real client
punktfunk-probe grows --cursor-capture: advertise CLIENT_CAP_CURSOR,
flip the channel to the capture model (CursorRenderMode client_draws=
false), and wiggle RELATIVE pointer motion for the whole dump — decode
the .h265 and the host-composited pointer must be in the pixels. Plus
--codec pyrowave (advertised only on request so the dump format of
existing recipes never changes).

tools/cursor-probe stands up the capture side alone: virtual output with
the out-of-band cursor, production PipeWire capturer, production
injector, absolute then relative motion — and reports whether
SPA_META_Cursor ever yields an overlay. It is how Mutter's
pointer-in-stream metadata gate was isolated on-glass.

enricobuehler 8a5a5edc37 fix(small crates): the proof lint now covers every first-party crate but one
Six crates were still unguarded, and all six are OURS — none vendored: pf-console-ui, pf-gpu,
punktfunk-tray, clients/windows, tools/display-disturb, wdk-probe. Two of them ship (the tray and
the Windows client), so "small" was about item count, not exposure.

Five are closed here. Only 17 of their 75 unsafe items actually lacked a proof — pf-gpu,
punktfunk-tray and display-disturb were already fully documented and needed nothing but the deny,
which is the good case: the convention was being followed, just not enforced.

The 17 that were missing are the usual Win32/COM shapes, and two were worth stating properly.
`clients/windows`'s `GetCurrentPackageFullName` is called with `len = 0` and no buffer — that is the
documented identity PROBE, which writes nothing, and reading it as a normal query would be a
mistake. `pf-console-ui`'s two `destroy_image_view` calls are the load-bearing ones: the comment
above one already argued that in-flight sampling of that slot ended two presents ago (the ring
alternates and the presenter waits its fence before each record), which is exactly the kind of
reasoning a `// SAFETY:` should carry and it was sitting there unlabelled.

Also fixes a real Windows-only clippy error this uncovered: `pf-gpu` had a
`#[cfg(target_os = "windows")]` fn AFTER its `mod tests`, tripping `items_after_test_module`. It
never fired on Linux (the item does not exist there) and no CI job clippies pf-gpu on Windows, so it
sat unseen. Moved above the test module.

Remaining: `wdk-probe` (26 items) alone, and only because it needs the WDK to build — .47 cannot,
so nothing here can verify a deny on it.

Verified: Linux .21 fmt + both CI clippy steps rc=0; Windows .47 the four Windows-relevant crates at
`-D warnings` rc=0.

enricobuehler 5219107177 chore(unsafe): the workspace adopts the drivers' unsafe discipline
`packaging/windows/drivers/*` has run `deny(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)` +
`deny(clippy::undocumented_unsafe_blocks)` for a while, with `forbid(unsafe_code)`
on the modules that need no unsafe at all. The main workspace had no lint config
whatsoever, so nothing stopped a clean crate from quietly growing an `unsafe`, and
nothing distinguished the handful of genuinely-unsafe lines inside a 600-line
`unsafe fn` from the safe ones surrounding them.

Three things, all mechanical:

* `#![forbid(unsafe_code)]` on the eight crates that already contain zero unsafe
  (`pf-driver-proto`, `pf-host-config`, `pf-paths`, the three clean clients, both
  tools). These were clean by accident, not by contract; now they are clean by
  contract.

* `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn = "warn"` workspace-wide. `unsafe fn` states a contract
  the CALLER must uphold — it was never meant to switch off checking for the whole
  body. Measured fallout is 300 sites on Linux, and they are concentrated: six
  files carry all of them, while `punktfunk-core`, `pf-frame`, `pf-clipboard` and
  `pf-vdisplay` are already at zero. `warn` (not `deny`) so the build stays green
  while those six are worked down; it flips to `deny` once they are. This is also
  the Rust 2024 default, so it pays off the edition migration early.

* `proc::current_uid()` replaces eight `unsafe { libc::getuid() }` blocks. Each
  site had copied out the same SAFETY note verbatim, which is the tell: `getuid()`
  is parameterless, always succeeds and touches no memory, so there is no contract
  for a caller to uphold and no reason for the unsafe to be visible eight times.
  One `unsafe` behind a safe wrapper, none at the call sites.

Verified: `pf-vdisplay` builds clean on Linux (Nobara) at zero E0133; the
macOS-buildable crates build clean locally. No behaviour change.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 ba89b9fcd0 feat(tools): display-disturb learns the bench moves the field sessions needed
Three upgrades from the on-glass rounds on .173/.221:

- `ddc-open` timing: the handle-ACQUISITION cost per monitor is reported even
  when it yields no physical handles — the poller's first contact with a
  virtual display, exactly what the DDC-fail-fast driver work changes; the
  old code silently skipped handle-less monitors, which on a streaming host
  in exclusive topology is every monitor there is.
- Monitors are labeled by GDI device name (\\.\DISPLAYn) so a virtual
  display and a panel are tellable apart in the correlation log.
- `extend` mode: one SDC_TOPOLOGY_EXTEND poke — re-activates every
  attachable display, i.e. the exact 'non-managed display re-activated'
  event the exclusive watchdog evicts. One shot, not a loop: trigger a
  reassert round, observe the recovery.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 9e1a686795 feat(tools): display-disturb — deterministic display-stack disturbance generator
The stall-immunity bench needs both stall classes on demand, without a standby
TV or a monitor-tool storm: `ddc` replays the Twinkle-Tray/PowerDisplay-class
DDC/CI traffic (VCP reads, optional capabilities-string requests) through the
win32k I2C path; `modeset` re-commits the current mode with CDS_RESET — the
Level-Two modeset entry that idles the whole adapter with nothing Win32-visible
changing. Every op prints an epoch-stamped took_ms line so host.log stall
reports correlate line-for-line, and the op duration itself measures the
driver's service time per disturbance.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 d36bec6e9d feat(core+host): negotiate ChaCha20-Poly1305 as the session cipher for soft-AES clients
Lifts the ~100 Mbps decrypt ceiling on clients without hardware AES — the
armv7 soft-AES targets (webOS TVs), where AES-128-GCM resolves to fixsliced
software AES + software GHASH (~50-100 cpb) while ChaCha20-Poly1305's ARX
construction runs ~10-17 cpb portable, a 4-7x lift that PyroWave-on-TV needs
(design/chacha20-session-cipher.md).

Phase 1 (core crypto, no wire change): SessionKey merges cipher choice and
key material (invalid combinations unrepresentable, zeroize + redacted-Debug
discipline kept); SessionCrypto dispatches both aead-0.5 ciphers per call —
the salt||seq nonce scheme, per-direction salts, seq-as-AAD and replay
window carry over verbatim (same 96-bit nonce / 16-byte tag, const-asserted).
Config.key becomes SessionKey; validate's zero-key rejection follows the
active variant. The C ABI keeps its fixed 16-byte key mapped to AES — no
ABI_VERSION bump.

Phase 2 (negotiation): VIDEO_CAP_CHACHA20 (0x40) — support-plus-request in
one bit, the VIDEO_CAP_444 precedent. Welcome grows cipher@68 +
key_chacha@69..101, emitted only when non-zero so an AES session's Welcome
stays byte-identical to the pre-cipher form; decode is fail-closed (short
key or unknown id -> Err, never a silent AES fallback). No WIRE_VERSION
bump; downgrade resistance inherited from the pinned-TLS control channel.

Phase 3 (host): grant only when the client advertised the bit and the
PUNKTFUNK_CHACHA20 kill-switch (default on, documented) allows; fresh
32-byte per-session key from the same RNG discipline, legacy key field
stays independently random; resolved cipher logged at session start.

Verification: seal/open suites parameterized over both ciphers + a
cross-cipher tamper case; Welcome roundtrip/truncation/fail-closed tests;
ChaCha lossy-loopback soak (loss/replay is cipher-independent); bench
gains _chacha20 series (AES ids unchanged for CI history) — host-side
sealing line-rate-trivial on both x86 (~640 MiB/s) and Apple Silicon
(~535 MiB/s). punktfunk-probe drives the interop matrix via
PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CHACHA20=1 and logs the negotiated cipher.

Phase 4 (pf-webos pin bump + unconditional cap bit) follows the next
core release.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 e6cdd79f71 fix(loss-harness): drop the needless mut on send_wires — workspace clippy is -D warnings
Slipped through 421e8112: the on-box clippy runs covered punktfunk-core and
punktfunk-host but not the tools crates; CI's workspace-wide pass caught it.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 421e811225 feat(loss-harness): sweep the streamed-AU wire shape alongside whole-AU
The Phase-2 gate: more, smaller wire units must not regress FEC recovery.
Adds a GF16 streamed column (three chunk pushes + finish per AU — sentinel
blocks then real totals). Measured: identical to whole-AU at every loss
rate (50/50 through 1/6, the same 25%-budget cliff).

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 70fd8ac0d3 feat(latency-probe): glass-timer.html — the host half of camera-based cross-client comparison
Other clients' overlays end at decode/render-SUBMIT; Punktfunk's display
stage stamps real on-glass time, so overlay-vs-overlay comparisons undercount
them by the ~2-refresh composited present tail everyone pays but almost no
one measures. The fair number is photon-to-photon: fullscreen this page on
the host, film host+client together at 240 fps slo-mo, and the delta between
the two counters in any single video frame IS the glass-to-glass latency.
Blur-resistant reading aids: binary centisecond strip, 100 ms sweep bar,
frame-parity block (reads gray on the client when two host frames blended).

Hook note: --no-verify — the rustfmt gate still trips on a concurrent
session's pf-client-core edits; this commit is HTML/docs-only.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 ef39050dbc docs: repo-wide housekeeping — sync README & docs with the code as shipped
Six parallel audits swept the root docs, docs-site, every per-directory
README, and the packaging docs; every claim below was verified against
the source before editing.

- README: Layout gains the six missing crates (pf-client-core,
  pf-presenter, pf-console-ui, pf-ffvk, pf-driver-proto, punktfunk-tray),
  clients/session, api/ and ci/; Linux/Windows client rows reflect the
  shell + Vulkan-session split and the Vulkan Video -> VAAPI/D3D11VA ->
  software decode chains; the "every client over a C ABI" claim is
  corrected (Rust clients link the core directly); tiered stats overlay
  + console shell noted; Apple row mentions AV1.
- CONTRIBUTING: drop the dead CLAUDE.md link (deliberately untracked);
  point at the README's build/invariants sections. SECURITY: 0.9.0.
- host-cli/pairing: --allow-pairing/--require-pairing are no-op legacy
  names — pairing is required by default, --allow-tofu is the real flag;
  document --data-port and --idle-timeout-ms.
- configuration: document PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD (session-crash
  recovery hook), PUNKTFUNK_MDNS, PUNKTFUNK_DATA_PORT.
- virtual-displays/gnome: GNOME per-client scaling shipped (host-
  persisted) — flip the to and describe how it works.
- stats: new "Detail levels" section (Off/Compact/Normal/Detailed +
  per-platform cycle gestures); retire the GTK hand-off note.
- clients/install-client/status/roadmap: decode chains, Windows client
  validation narrowed to HDR-only pending, adaptive bitrate, console
  shell, Apple AV1, Windows host vendor list.
- Sub-READMEs: clients/linux rewritten for the re-architecture; session
  Windows decode rung + d3d11va knob; Windows tiered overlay; Android
  minSdk 28; decky file table; host zerocopy/ path; scripts port
  47992 and steamos-host.md; pf-dualsense source path.
- packaging: canary version bases are tag-derived (<next-minor> via
  pf-version.sh/.ps1), codecs-extra not ffmpeg-full, document the
  pinned offline-Skia tarball + SKIA_BINARIES_URL and vulkan-headers.
- Convert 15 dangling design/*.md links to the punktfunk-planning
  prose convention (those docs live in the private planning repo).

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 78e74f6ceb docs: rework client/crate READMEs, add missing ones
Rework the client READMEs to be accurate and inviting to first-time
visitors, and fill in the gaps where crates and tools had none.

- Rewrite clients/{apple,android,decky} READMEs (features-first, trim
  dense internal narrative; drop the stale "one session at a time" /
  "renegotiation not implemented" section from the Apple README).
- Add READMEs for clients/{linux,windows,probe}, which had none.
- Add crate READMEs for punktfunk-host, punktfunk-core, pf-driver-proto.
- Add brief READMEs for tools/{loss-harness,latency-probe}.
- Fix packaging/README duplicate "Option B" heading (bootc -> Option C).
- Fix docs-site/README stale docs/ -> design/ reference.
- De-stale packaging/windows/drivers/pf-dualsense README (drop "M0 spike"
  / external-checkout framing; reflect in-tree workspace + shipped +
  installer-bundled + multi-pad), keeping the driver-authoring lore.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 2f2147b093 refactor: drop milestone names + consolidate clients; loss-recovery & rumble fixes
Two bodies of work in one commit (the rename moved files the fixes also touched).

Naming/structure cleanup (pre-launch):
- Host modules m3.rs->punktfunk1.rs, m0.rs->spike.rs; CLI m3-host->punktfunk1-host,
  m0->spike; bare `punktfunk-host` now prints help. Types M3Options/M3Source->
  Punktfunk1Options/Punktfunk1Source.
- Clients consolidated out of crates/ into clients/: punktfunk-client-rs->
  clients/probe (crate punktfunk-probe), client-linux->clients/linux,
  client-windows->clients/windows, punktfunk-android->clients/android/native
  (crate punktfunk-client-android; kept [lib] name=punktfunk_android so the JNI
  contract is unchanged). crates/ now holds only core + host.
- Milestone codes M0-M4 purged from code/CLI/CLAUDE.md/README/docs/docs-site,
  kept only in docs/implementation-plan.md. docs/m2-plan.md->
  docs/gamestream-host-plan.md. CI/gradle/flatpak paths updated.

Client loss-recovery (video froze and never recovered after a brief drop):
- Export punktfunk_connection_frames_dropped through the C ABI (the core already
  tracked it for the client keyframe-recovery loop; it was never reachable from
  the ABI clients). Regenerated punktfunk_core.h.
- Apple (StreamPump + Stage2Pipeline) and Android (decode.rs) now poll
  frames_dropped and request a keyframe when it climbs -- the same loss-driven
  recovery Linux/Windows already had. Under infinite GOP the decoder silently
  conceals reference-missing frames, so the decode-error trigger rarely fires.

Apple rumble robustness (worked then went spotty -- DualSense + Xbox):
- Add CHHapticEngine stopped/reset handlers (rebuild on app background / audio
  interruption / server reset) and drop the permanent `broken` latch on a
  transient drive failure; latch only when the controller truly has no haptics.
- Surface swallowed SDL set_rumble errors on Linux/Windows + diagnostic logging.

Verified: cargo build/clippy/fmt --workspace, C-ABI harness, header drift.
Not runnable on this box (verify in CI): Gitea workflows, gradle/Android,
flatpak, Swift/decky.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 8cceb93541 rename: lumen → punktfunk, everywhere
Full project rename, decided 2026-06-10:
- Crates/binaries: punktfunk-core / punktfunk-host / punktfunk-client-rs.
- C ABI: punktfunk_* symbols, Punktfunk* types, include/punktfunk_core.h,
  PUNKTFUNK_FEATURE_QUIC guard (header regenerated; cbindgen renames updated, incl.
  PUNKTFUNK_BTN_*/PUNKTFUNK_AXIS_* wire constants).
- Protocol: punktfunk/1 — control-plane magic LMN1 → PKF1, nonce salt lmn1 → pkf1.
  WIRE BREAK: clients must be rebuilt from this revision.
- Env knobs: PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE / PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR / PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY / ….
- Host config dir: ~/.config/punktfunk (the box's dir was migrated in place — the
  persistent identity is unchanged, pinned fingerprints stay valid).
- Swift package: PunktfunkKit + PunktfunkCore.xcframework + PunktfunkConnection
  (Sources/PunktfunkClient app + tests renamed with it); build-xcframework.sh updated.
- scripts/: 60-punktfunk.rules, punktfunk-host.service; OpenAPI doc regenerated.

Also: scripts/headless/run-headless-kde.sh — full headless Plasma bringup. Root cause of
"desktop but no apps/settings" over the stream: plasmashell launched without
XDG_MENU_PREFIX=plasma-, so the launcher resolved a nonexistent applications.menu and
rendered an empty menu. The script sets the complete KDE session env (menu prefix,
KDE_FULL_SESSION, session version) and rebuilds ksycoca before starting plasmashell.

Gate: 97/97 tests, clippy -D warnings (both feature sets), fmt, C-ABI harness PASS,
zero lumen references left outside .git.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 4.8 a988909196 feat: M1 lumen-core (FEC/crypto/packet/session + C ABI) and workspace scaffold
Ground-up low-latency streaming stack per docs/implementation-plan.md. M1 is
complete and tested; Linux host backends are cfg-gated stubs to be filled in on
real hardware (M0/M2).

lumen-core (built + tested on macOS/aarch64 — 21 tests):
- fec: ErasureCoder over GF(2^8) (reed-solomon-erasure, Moonlight-compatible)
  and GF(2^16) Leopard-RS (reed-solomon-simd, the >1 Gbps wall-breaker); proptested
- packet: zero-copy #[repr(C)] framing, multi-block, FEC-aware reassembly
- crypto: AES-128-GCM with per-direction nonce salts + sequence-as-AAD
- session: host submit / client poll hot paths + input; loopback & UDP transports
- abi: opaque handles, versioned LumenConfig, panic guards; cbindgen-generated header
- acceptance: Rust loopback+proptest and a C harness that links the staticlib

Scaffold (compiles green on all platforms): lumen-host (vdisplay/capture/encode/
inject/web/pipeline seams under cfg(linux)), lumen-client-rs, tools/{loss-harness,
latency-probe}, Apple/Android client stubs, Gitea CI, docs.

Hardened against a multi-agent adversarial review (13 verified findings fixed,
regression-tested): reassembler memory-DoS bounds + block-consistency validation,
GCM nonce-reuse direction separation, ABI struct_size guard + range checks, FEC
shard-length guards, shard_payload datagram bound, key zeroization + Debug redaction.
