PW6 shipped behind a knob because one pre-registered risk was unmeasured: a
streamed frame whose FINAL block is lost has no totals, so where the whole-AU
path hands the consumer a usable blurred partial, a streamed frame may deliver
nothing. PyroWave clients opt into partial delivery unconditionally, so this
would have been a live behaviour change for every one of them. Measured now,
three ways, instead of reasoned about.
`tools/loss-harness` gains a partial-delivery leg: FEC pinned OFF, chunk-aligned
AUs, deliver_partial ON, realistic 1408/200 geometry, and AU sizes swept across
the whole 1..=200-shard range of FINAL-block sizes — because the final block's
size is what bounds the exposure. Loss is injected per packet from a seeded
xorshift rather than through `loopback_drop_period`, whose deterministic 1-in-N
would systematically always-or-never hit the final block, which is the entire
question. `tc netem` on `lo` was deliberately not used: the in-process model
gives exact per-frame attribution, needs no sudo, cannot disturb a box running a
live desktop session, and — decisively — can drop precisely the final block.
Leg 1, deterministic (drop exactly the last block, 200 frames): whole-AU
delivers 200 partials and 0 losses; streamed delivers 0 partials and 200 total
losses. The trap is real and, when it fires, total.
Leg 2, random loss, 20 000 frames per cell, same seed and sizes for both shapes.
At 2 % the two are indistinguishable — 20000/20000 partials and ZERO vanished
frames on both, matching the analytic bound E[loss^k] over final-block sizes k
(~1e-4). The gap only appears at 30 % (99.94 % vs 100 % rescue) and 50 %
(99.79 %). `complete` is 0 throughout by construction: with FEC off and ~500
packets per AU, essentially every frame is damaged — which is the regime the
partial path exists for.
The spike gains `--wire-chunk` and a streamed loopback path, so the wire shape
is reachable end to end outside a real client: `poll_chunk` drains the AU,
`begin_streamed_frame_at`/`seal_streamed_chunk`/`seal_streamed_finish` seal each
piece, and the client byte-compares the reassembly. On 120 real PyroWave AUs the
streamed legs (56.5 and 2.0 chunks/AU) and the whole-AU control emit a
byte-identical 47 373 568-byte stream with 0 mismatches — the cut changes the
wire shape and not one byte of content, and with the knob unset it does not
engage at all.
A new `#[ignore]`d GPU test closes the picture question on real hardware with a
BUSY card (gradients + checker + noise), never a flat fill: chunks are whole
windows, exactly one `first` and one `last`, the AU decodes through the client's
own window walk, and luma PSNR lands at 40.2 dB. Unset the knob and the test
refuses to run, which is the default-off claim verified rather than asserted.
Verdict recorded in the plan: KEEP IT OFF. The 2 % tie is an argument about
typical loss, but the failure is not graceful when it fires and the measured win
is host send-side pipelining that nobody has yet put a millisecond number on.
49bc93cd grew seal_streamed_chunk a slice_end parameter and updated every
caller except this one — the Linux clippy leg has been red since (run
10615+). false = the legacy full-FEC-block granularity the harness always
exercised; its loopback client never advertises the P2 slice wire.

`packaging/windows/drivers/*` has run `deny(unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn)` +
`deny(clippy::undocumented_unsafe_blocks)` for a while, with `forbid(unsafe_code)`
on the modules that need no unsafe at all. The main workspace had no lint config
whatsoever, so nothing stopped a clean crate from quietly growing an `unsafe`, and
nothing distinguished the handful of genuinely-unsafe lines inside a 600-line
`unsafe fn` from the safe ones surrounding them.
Three things, all mechanical:
* `#![forbid(unsafe_code)]` on the eight crates that already contain zero unsafe
(`pf-driver-proto`, `pf-host-config`, `pf-paths`, the three clean clients, both
tools). These were clean by accident, not by contract; now they are clean by
contract.
* `unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn = "warn"` workspace-wide. `unsafe fn` states a contract
the CALLER must uphold — it was never meant to switch off checking for the whole
body. Measured fallout is 300 sites on Linux, and they are concentrated: six
files carry all of them, while `punktfunk-core`, `pf-frame`, `pf-clipboard` and
`pf-vdisplay` are already at zero. `warn` (not `deny`) so the build stays green
while those six are worked down; it flips to `deny` once they are. This is also
the Rust 2024 default, so it pays off the edition migration early.
* `proc::current_uid()` replaces eight `unsafe { libc::getuid() }` blocks. Each
site had copied out the same SAFETY note verbatim, which is the tell: `getuid()`
is parameterless, always succeeds and touches no memory, so there is no contract
for a caller to uphold and no reason for the unsafe to be visible eight times.
One `unsafe` behind a safe wrapper, none at the call sites.
Verified: `pf-vdisplay` builds clean on Linux (Nobara) at zero E0133; the
macOS-buildable crates build clean locally. No behaviour change.
Lifts the ~100 Mbps decrypt ceiling on clients without hardware AES — the
armv7 soft-AES targets (webOS TVs), where AES-128-GCM resolves to fixsliced
software AES + software GHASH (~50-100 cpb) while ChaCha20-Poly1305's ARX
construction runs ~10-17 cpb portable, a 4-7x lift that PyroWave-on-TV needs
(design/chacha20-session-cipher.md).
Phase 1 (core crypto, no wire change): SessionKey merges cipher choice and
key material (invalid combinations unrepresentable, zeroize + redacted-Debug
discipline kept); SessionCrypto dispatches both aead-0.5 ciphers per call —
the salt||seq nonce scheme, per-direction salts, seq-as-AAD and replay
window carry over verbatim (same 96-bit nonce / 16-byte tag, const-asserted).
Config.key becomes SessionKey; validate's zero-key rejection follows the
active variant. The C ABI keeps its fixed 16-byte key mapped to AES — no
ABI_VERSION bump.
Phase 2 (negotiation): VIDEO_CAP_CHACHA20 (0x40) — support-plus-request in
one bit, the VIDEO_CAP_444 precedent. Welcome grows cipher@68 +
key_chacha@69..101, emitted only when non-zero so an AES session's Welcome
stays byte-identical to the pre-cipher form; decode is fail-closed (short
key or unknown id -> Err, never a silent AES fallback). No WIRE_VERSION
bump; downgrade resistance inherited from the pinned-TLS control channel.
Phase 3 (host): grant only when the client advertised the bit and the
PUNKTFUNK_CHACHA20 kill-switch (default on, documented) allows; fresh
32-byte per-session key from the same RNG discipline, legacy key field
stays independently random; resolved cipher logged at session start.
Verification: seal/open suites parameterized over both ciphers + a
cross-cipher tamper case; Welcome roundtrip/truncation/fail-closed tests;
ChaCha lossy-loopback soak (loss/replay is cipher-independent); bench
gains _chacha20 series (AES ids unchanged for CI history) — host-side
sealing line-rate-trivial on both x86 (~640 MiB/s) and Apple Silicon
(~535 MiB/s). punktfunk-probe drives the interop matrix via
PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CHACHA20=1 and logs the negotiated cipher.
Phase 4 (pf-webos pin bump + unconditional cap bit) follows the next
core release.

Slipped through 421e8112: the on-box clippy runs covered punktfunk-core and
punktfunk-host but not the tools crates; CI's workspace-wide pass caught it.

The Phase-2 gate: more, smaller wire units must not regress FEC recovery.
Adds a GF16 streamed column (three chunk pushes + finish per AU — sentinel
blocks then real totals). Measured: identical to whole-AU at every loss
rate (50/50 through 1/6, the same 25%-budget cliff).

Six parallel audits swept the root docs, docs-site, every per-directory
README, and the packaging docs; every claim below was verified against
the source before editing.
- README: Layout gains the six missing crates (pf-client-core,
pf-presenter, pf-console-ui, pf-ffvk, pf-driver-proto, punktfunk-tray),
clients/session, api/ and ci/; Linux/Windows client rows reflect the
shell + Vulkan-session split and the Vulkan Video -> VAAPI/D3D11VA ->
software decode chains; the "every client over a C ABI" claim is
corrected (Rust clients link the core directly); tiered stats overlay
+ console shell noted; Apple row mentions AV1.
- CONTRIBUTING: drop the dead CLAUDE.md link (deliberately untracked);
point at the README's build/invariants sections. SECURITY: 0.9.0.
- host-cli/pairing: --allow-pairing/--require-pairing are no-op legacy
names — pairing is required by default, --allow-tofu is the real flag;
document --data-port and --idle-timeout-ms.
- configuration: document PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD (session-crash
recovery hook), PUNKTFUNK_MDNS, PUNKTFUNK_DATA_PORT.
- virtual-displays/gnome: GNOME per-client scaling shipped (host-
persisted) — flip the ❌ to ✅ and describe how it works.
- stats: new "Detail levels" section (Off/Compact/Normal/Detailed +
per-platform cycle gestures); retire the GTK hand-off note.
- clients/install-client/status/roadmap: decode chains, Windows client
validation narrowed to HDR-only pending, adaptive bitrate, console
shell, Apple AV1, Windows host vendor list.
- Sub-READMEs: clients/linux rewritten for the re-architecture; session
Windows decode rung + d3d11va knob; Windows tiered overlay; Android
minSdk 28; decky file table; host zerocopy/ path; scripts port
47992 and steamos-host.md; pf-dualsense source path.
- packaging: canary version bases are tag-derived (<next-minor> via
pf-version.sh/.ps1), codecs-extra not ffmpeg-full, document the
pinned offline-Skia tarball + SKIA_BINARIES_URL and vulkan-headers.
- Convert 15 dangling design/*.md links to the punktfunk-planning
prose convention (those docs live in the private planning repo).

Rework the client READMEs to be accurate and inviting to first-time
visitors, and fill in the gaps where crates and tools had none.
- Rewrite clients/{apple,android,decky} READMEs (features-first, trim
dense internal narrative; drop the stale "one session at a time" /
"renegotiation not implemented" section from the Apple README).
- Add READMEs for clients/{linux,windows,probe}, which had none.
- Add crate READMEs for punktfunk-host, punktfunk-core, pf-driver-proto.
- Add brief READMEs for tools/{loss-harness,latency-probe}.
- Fix packaging/README duplicate "Option B" heading (bootc -> Option C).
- Fix docs-site/README stale docs/ -> design/ reference.
- De-stale packaging/windows/drivers/pf-dualsense README (drop "M0 spike"
/ external-checkout framing; reflect in-tree workspace + shipped +
installer-bundled + multi-pad), keeping the driver-authoring lore.

Two bodies of work in one commit (the rename moved files the fixes also touched).
Naming/structure cleanup (pre-launch):
- Host modules m3.rs->punktfunk1.rs, m0.rs->spike.rs; CLI m3-host->punktfunk1-host,
m0->spike; bare `punktfunk-host` now prints help. Types M3Options/M3Source->
Punktfunk1Options/Punktfunk1Source.
- Clients consolidated out of crates/ into clients/: punktfunk-client-rs->
clients/probe (crate punktfunk-probe), client-linux->clients/linux,
client-windows->clients/windows, punktfunk-android->clients/android/native
(crate punktfunk-client-android; kept [lib] name=punktfunk_android so the JNI
contract is unchanged). crates/ now holds only core + host.
- Milestone codes M0-M4 purged from code/CLI/CLAUDE.md/README/docs/docs-site,
kept only in docs/implementation-plan.md. docs/m2-plan.md->
docs/gamestream-host-plan.md. CI/gradle/flatpak paths updated.
Client loss-recovery (video froze and never recovered after a brief drop):
- Export punktfunk_connection_frames_dropped through the C ABI (the core already
tracked it for the client keyframe-recovery loop; it was never reachable from
the ABI clients). Regenerated punktfunk_core.h.
- Apple (StreamPump + Stage2Pipeline) and Android (decode.rs) now poll
frames_dropped and request a keyframe when it climbs -- the same loss-driven
recovery Linux/Windows already had. Under infinite GOP the decoder silently
conceals reference-missing frames, so the decode-error trigger rarely fires.
Apple rumble robustness (worked then went spotty -- DualSense + Xbox):
- Add CHHapticEngine stopped/reset handlers (rebuild on app background / audio
interruption / server reset) and drop the permanent `broken` latch on a
transient drive failure; latch only when the controller truly has no haptics.
- Surface swallowed SDL set_rumble errors on Linux/Windows + diagnostic logging.
Verified: cargo build/clippy/fmt --workspace, C-ABI harness, header drift.
Not runnable on this box (verify in CI): Gitea workflows, gradle/Android,
flatpak, Swift/decky.

Full project rename, decided 2026-06-10:
- Crates/binaries: punktfunk-core / punktfunk-host / punktfunk-client-rs.
- C ABI: punktfunk_* symbols, Punktfunk* types, include/punktfunk_core.h,
PUNKTFUNK_FEATURE_QUIC guard (header regenerated; cbindgen renames updated, incl.
PUNKTFUNK_BTN_*/PUNKTFUNK_AXIS_* wire constants).
- Protocol: punktfunk/1 — control-plane magic LMN1 → PKF1, nonce salt lmn1 → pkf1.
WIRE BREAK: clients must be rebuilt from this revision.
- Env knobs: PUNKTFUNK_VIDEO_SOURCE / PUNKTFUNK_COMPOSITOR / PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY / ….
- Host config dir: ~/.config/punktfunk (the box's dir was migrated in place — the
persistent identity is unchanged, pinned fingerprints stay valid).
- Swift package: PunktfunkKit + PunktfunkCore.xcframework + PunktfunkConnection
(Sources/PunktfunkClient app + tests renamed with it); build-xcframework.sh updated.
- scripts/: 60-punktfunk.rules, punktfunk-host.service; OpenAPI doc regenerated.
Also: scripts/headless/run-headless-kde.sh — full headless Plasma bringup. Root cause of
"desktop but no apps/settings" over the stream: plasmashell launched without
XDG_MENU_PREFIX=plasma-, so the launcher resolved a nonexistent applications.menu and
rendered an empty menu. The script sets the complete KDE session env (menu prefix,
KDE_FULL_SESSION, session version) and rebuilds ksycoca before starting plasmashell.
Gate: 97/97 tests, clippy -D warnings (both feature sets), fmt, C-ABI harness PASS,
zero lumen references left outside .git.
