fix(client/settings): a byte order mark stops silently erasing every setting
`Set-Content -Encoding UTF8` writes a UTF-8 BOM, and every Windows how-to
reaches for it, so `%APPDATA%\punktfunk\client-windows-settings.json` edited
from a shell arrives with `EF BB BF` in front of the `{`. serde_json rejects
that at byte 0 — correctly, JSON has no BOM — and
`.and_then(|s| serde_json::from_str(&s).ok())` turned the refusal into
`Default`. Every setting in the file, gone, with the file plainly correct on
screen and not one word anywhere about why.
Cost an hour on 08-07: a `codec: "av1"` edit was ignored and the client
negotiated HEVC. The obvious suspects — the negotiation, the caps, the host —
were all working exactly as designed.
So the mark is stripped, which is what every other JSON consumer on Windows
does. But the BOM is only the instance; the bug is the `.ok()`, which hides a
trailing comma, a truncated write and a hand-edit typo just as completely.
Those now cost one `warn!` naming the file and serde's own line and column. A
file that cannot be READ at all is reported too, and for the same reason: PowerShell's
`-Encoding Unicode` writes UTF-16LE, `read_to_string` rejects it as invalid
UTF-8, and that lands in exactly the same hole.
The RESULT is deliberately unchanged — `Default`, never an error. Nothing about
streaming may hinge on a settings file being readable, and refusing to start
because one is malformed would be a worse failure than the one being fixed. A
missing file stays silent, because that is just first run.
All three of this client's JSON stores share the loader, because all three had
the identical line: the settings file, the known-hosts store (where a BOM
silently unpairs every host) and the profiles catalog.

Merge origin/main into worktree-native-decode-m0
main moved 93 commits while this branch ran. Two conflicts, both where main's new
work sat next to M10's excision:
packaging/flatpak/io.unom.Punktfunk.yml — main added the vendored gamescope WSI
layer (the only route to HDR on a Deck) and, before it, a vulkan-headers module.
Took both: this branch predates them and deletes neither. But the headers module's
stated consumer was pf-ffvk's bindgen over FFmpeg's hwcontext_vulkan.h, and M10
deleted pf-ffvk — so it now reads as dead weight to the next person. It is not:
the WSI layer IS a Vulkan layer, compiles against those headers, and builds after
it, so module order is the dependency. Rewrote the rationale to say so, including
why dropping it would be expensive to discover — flatpak.yml has no pull_request:
trigger, so a manifest break reaches main invisibly and a tag then ships no Linux
flatpak. Also recorded that the native decoder needs nothing from there: pf-vkdecode
reaches Vulkan through ash, which is pure Rust bindings, no bindgen, no C headers.
crates/pf-console-ui/src/screens/settings.rs — main restructured the gamepad
settings into TABS, which removed the per-row section headers; this branch had left
Some("Video") untouched from the merge base and added the pre-M10 decoder migration
next to it. Git could not tell those apart. Took main's structure (no header, its
deliberate change) with this branch's migration layered on: a stored `vulkan`,
`vaapi` or `d3d11va` names no preset in the tabbed list and would render as "—",
then silently rewrite the user's preference on the next save.
Gates on the merged tree, Linux container: fmt clean; cargo check --workspace
--all-targets clean; clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings clean; tests
green across pf-vkdecode (187), pf-client-core (163), pf-console-ui (58) and
punktfunk-host (447 of 448 — the one failure is the pre-existing
gamestream::stream::tests::sender_delivers_batches, a UDP-loopback EINTR under
qemu that fails identically on a pristine HEAD).

feat: M10 — FFmpeg is gone from the client
cargo tree -p punktfunk-client-session finds no ffmpeg. The host still does, which is the whole point: pf-encode keeps libavcodec unconditionally and no host workflow, packaging script or licence file was touched. Deleted: crates/pf-ffvk, video_vulkan.rs, video_vaapi.rs, video_libav.rs, the libavcodec half of video_d3d11.rs, the av_log machinery, ffmpeg::codec::Id as the decoder's vocabulary (the quic CODEC_* wire constants now serve, which is why the evidence table was keyed on them), DecodedImage::VkFrame and ::Dmabuf, the presenter's AVVkFrame lane, and the ffmpeg-fallback feature with everything behind it. DrmFrameGuard collapses from an enum to a newtype, which removes an unsafe impl Send. Roughly 25,000 lines. Then the CI, packaging, licensing and docs work the plan's §6 lists: the Windows workflows lose FFMPEG_DIR, PF_FFVK_VULKAN_INCLUDE and their PATH prepend; the MSIX loses its DLL wildcard; the client .deb stops emitting libav sonames on its own because depends come from dpkg-shlibdeps; arch, flatpak and nix drop the dependency; and the README's "FFmpeg 7 or 8" contract narrows to the host. Three defects reached users' machines in the first cut, and none was in the deletion itself. All three desktop Settings UIs offer vulkan, vaapi and d3d11va as stored decoder values, so those strings sit in shipped settings files today. Refusing them by name — which is the correct rule for a stale pin — would have bricked every upgraded client whose owner ever touched that dropdown. They now migrate onto the native rung for the same hardware family, at decoder construction AND at each dialog's lookup, because a legacy value that matches no preset displays as "Automatic" and silently rewrites the user's preference on the next save. M9's evidence filter was deleted on the argument that with no libavcodec twin below, barring an unproven rung removes hardware decode rather than moving down one rung. That is true on Windows and false on Linux for Intel and every unknown vendor id, where prefer_vulkan_first is false and the order is native-vaapi → native-vk: a rung that has decoded nothing anywhere sitting above one that is 250/250 on three drivers. Every Intel Linux desktop would have moved from libavcodec VAAPI, shipping for years, onto pf-vaadec by default — and a rung that constructs and then produces wrong pixels leaves only by the error-streak demotion, which this codebase already documents as not tripping on the B580's strobing. The filter is restored as a narrow, pure, testable rule: an unproven rung yields to a proven one, and to nothing else. Windows deliberately passes no rung below, because that vendor family is the one with a measured wrong-pixel report against Vulkan decode, and trading no evidence for evidence of corruption is the wrong direction. And the notices still said FFmpeg was bundled. The root file is what both desktop clients include_str! and what the MSIX ships, three lines under the new card saying no FFmpeg is bundled; Apple's Acknowledgements said it too, on iOS, tvOS and macOS. The generator now emits four per-client files scoped by transitive closure — 0 FFmpeg mentions in each, verified — while the root file keeps it for the host. That also ends the standing false attribution of ffmpeg-next, GTK4, windows-rs and the NVENC SDK to an iPhone. Windows has no reachable box, so it was compiled instead: a cross clippy at -D warnings on x86_64 and aarch64-pc-windows-msvc with the C toolchain stubbed so build scripts run without linking. That gate immediately caught an include_str! path one directory too deep, which nothing else could have. Gates: container clippy -D warnings, 160 tests, workspace check, both Windows targets clean, client ffmpeg count 0 and host 2. The four decode crates are untouched, so the hardware rungs' 250/250 stands. ⚠ Owed and unrun: no GPU has executed any of this milestone. M8's on-glass software check, M7's D3D11 and VAAPI AV1 hardware legs, and M9's field bake all still want hardware, and the bake window and criteria remain the user's. |

feat(clients/gamepad-ui): section tabs, background palettes, and a backdrop that moves everywhere
The console settings were one 30-row scroll, which on a Deck meant thumbing past Video and Audio to reach the pad settings. They are now split across sections — Stream · Video · Audio · Controller · Interface · Profiles, plus Input on the desktop console, which alone carries the touch/mouse rows. L1/R1 walks them, each section remembers where its cursor was, and the names are the same word on every client so a setting is where you looked for it last. Shoulders are not the only route, because a D-pad remote hasn't got any: on Android, Up from the first row moves onto the strip (left/right walks sections there, A drops back in), and on tvOS the pills are focusable, so the focus engine handles it — a Siri Remote has no extended gamepad profile and never reaches the input poll at all. The desktop console needs neither; PageUp and PageDown already map to the same events. New "Background" row, six palettes: Violet (the brand default), Tide, Forest, Ember, Rose, Graphite. A palette is a hue rotation plus a saturation scale over the ONE colour field each client already draws, so every palette inherits its structure and Violet is the identity transform — existing installs see exactly what they see today. The maths is ported three times (Rust/Swift/Kotlin) under one shared `ui_palette` key, with the same assertions pinned in each language. It is presentation only, so it is a device preference and never part of a profile. The form screens no longer have a backdrop of their own. Settings, add-host and pair used to sit on a still gradient; they now wear the same living field at a calm mix — pools dimmed onto the palette's own corner colour, vignette halved so rows that run to the edges don't get crushed. On the desktop console that collapsed the old aurora-over-static crossfade into one shader pass with a chased uniform. Motion speed is identical in both modes on purpose: changing it would make the field jump mid-transition. Nothing in the gamepad UI is backed by a static image now, and Reduce Motion (Apple) / "remove animations" (Android) still freeze it. Also: the settings screen had no raster coverage at all — the eyeball dump is `#[ignore]`d — so a new test draws every tab, and the Android screenshot set gains a console-settings scene. Both earned their keep immediately: the renders showed the extra hint pushing "Done" off a 360 dp phone (the legend scrolls now, and the Section cell only appears where shoulders exist) and the form backdrop crushing its own edges. |

feat(client): the native rung now decodes HEVC as well as H.264
The last piece of M3 WP-2 — VkH265Decoder was built and hardware-gated but nothing drove it. video_vk_native.rs holds a two-arm codec enum and forwards to it; the ledger, release tokens, status-query settling and timeline waits are byte-for-byte what they were, since they were always codec-agnostic over one DecodedVkFrame contract. The forwarders are written out per arm rather than macro'd so the unchanged H.264 arm is visible to a reviewer. The picture's own format now reaches the presenter, which picks bit depth and MSB packing from it instead of assuming the H.264 envelope. That incidentally fixes a live bug on the SHIPPING FFmpeg-Vulkan path: it derived ten-bit-ness by comparing against the 10-bit 4:2:0 format alone, so a 10-bit two-plane 4:4:4 surface — which its own format table accepts, and which NVIDIA reports for HEVC RExt — got 8-bit range and transfer maths. Reachable today with Full chroma plus 10-bit: decoded correctly, displayed wrong. Review round 11 caught a regression this WP would otherwise have shipped. pf-vkdecode refuses a stream whose (chroma, depth) pair has no picture format on the device, but the session is built lazily from the first SPS, so the refusal arrived AFTER construction — past the point where a native init failure falls through to FFmpeg-Vulkan. It burned the error streak instead and demoted to VAAPI/D3D11VA, which on NVIDIA/Linux means software. Turning on Full chroma on any non-NVIDIA GPU was enough: a 4K HEVC session that ran on FFmpeg-Vulkan before this branch would have landed on software decode. Both halves are fixed. The negotiated chroma and bit depth — already at the call site, the PyroWave arm four lines up uses them — are threaded into the backend, which probes the same caps path ensure_state would run, so the whole class refuses at CONSTRUCTION where the fall-through already exists. For the legs no negotiation can carry (a level above maxLevelIdc, an SPS that disagrees with the Welcome) the decoder latches 'never delivered a frame' and routes that first streak to FFmpeg-Vulkan rather than down the hardware ladder. H.264 is deliberately not probed: its envelope is fixed, so a probe would only add a profile guess on the bit-exact path; it gets the latch as its backstop. Two more from the round. Planner warnings are typed again rather than Debug strings — pf-vkdecode simply lacked the h265 re-export its h264 twin already had — which restores the H.264 log rendering exactly and unblocks M4, whose job is counting concealment by kind. And concealment is now the integrity set only: NonZeroReorder is documented spec-legal and fully planned, but the client treated every warning as damage, so the opening IDR and every ABR renegotiation's IDR were released unshown and re-anchored — a visible hitch on a healthy stream. Also: a raw-format newtype so a neighbouring i32 field cannot be passed to the colour maths, the presenter's depth table now pinned against pf-vkdecode's actual output vocabulary rather than the FFmpeg lane's, a per-format warn latch, and four stale docs. Gates: fmt clean; container clippy -D warnings zero across pf-client-core + pf-presenter + pf-vkdecode; tests 69/125/108/40 green; cargo check --workspace clean. |

feat(client): native Vulkan decode joins the automatic ladder, above FFmpeg-Vulkan
Closes M2. The 2026-08-05 ladder decision: WP-D shut with bit-exact
parity vs libavcodec (250/250 AUs on RADV, AMD-proprietary and NVIDIA)
and a 92-minute clean soak, and the program's goal is dropping FFmpeg
from the client — so on H.264 sessions where caps pass, auto now tries
pf-vkdecode FIRST, exactly where the ladder would reach FFmpeg-Vulkan.
No bake period.
native_vulkan_gate widens from by-name-only to the auto family
(auto/""/hardware); the vendor-first rungs are untouched (Linux
Intel/unknown still VAAPI-first, Windows Intel/unknown still
D3D11VA-first — NVIDIA and ALL AMD go native first). A native INIT
failure or caps refusal logs and falls through to FFmpeg-Vulkan, so
admission can't cost a session its decoder at start; runtime error
streaks ride the existing demotion machinery unchanged (past
FFmpeg-Vulkan to VAAPI/D3D11VA/software — a native→FFmpeg-Vulkan
runtime rung is deliberately absent, FFmpeg is on its way out).
PUNKTFUNK_DECODER=native-vulkan stays as the explicit pin; vulkan
keeps naming the FFmpeg backend specifically. A native_tried guard
keeps a failed pin init from re-attempting construction in auto.
Review round 8 (adversarial): no blocking code defect — no demote
bounce-back (Decoder::new is session-start-only; demotion mutates in
place), no double attempt, no cfg imbalance. 5 findings fixed: two doc
overclaims ("nothing regresses" now scoped to init; the ladder
enumerations no longer claim desktop-AMD Linux is VAAPI-first —
prefer_vulkan_first is vendor-wide), stale opt-in claims in Cargo.toml,
stale user-facing ladder text (console-ui row, trust.rs decoder field,
session README incl. the env-knob list), and the gate test now pins the
H264 codec-op bit to the literal 0x1 so a typo'd constant can't make
native silently never engage.
Gates: fmt clean; container clippy -D warnings zero for pf-client-core +
pf-presenter + pf-vkdecode; container tests green (pf-client-core lib +
pf-vkdecode + pf-bitstream); pf-console-ui check clean; mac
pf-vkdecode/pf-bitstream/cros-codecs 167 tests green.
On-glass sanity CLOSED 2026-08-05 ~22:10 UTC on .173 (4090, coincide
mode), decoder=auto and NO env var: the ladder picked native on its
own ("pf-vkdecode auto rung" log line), 525/526 stats windows on
native-vulkan over ~8m46s / 31550 frames, fps 0/59.4/61 with 6
windows <55 incl. startup zeros, bad-signature grep over the whole
log EMPTY, zero TDR events, host service Running after teardown.

fix(client/windows): settings persist when the app isn't installed on C:
Reported from the field (2026-08-05): a fresh Windows 11 box with a data
partition, "New apps will save to: D:", and the client installed there. It
launches, finds hosts and streams — but no setting and no profile survives a
restart. Reinstalling to C: fixes it completely. The reporter's read was "it's
in read-only mode", and that is almost exactly right.
The one clue that localises it: the client creates its mTLS identity with a
plain `fs::write` on first run and hard-exits if that fails. Their app started,
so ordinary file creation in the config directory works. Only the config stores
were being lost — and those are the three files that go through `write_atomic`,
which writes a sibling temp and renames it over the target.
The rename is what breaks. The client ships as a full-trust MSIX package, so
its `%APPDATA%` writes are redirected into the package container. When the
package lives on a secondary drive, Windows keeps that redirected state on the
package's own volume: `C:\Users\<u>\AppData\Local\Packages\<pfn>\` stays a real
directory on C:, but its children (LocalCache, RoamingState, …) are junctions to
`D:\WpSystem\<SID>\…`. Both sides of our rename still spell `C:\Users\…`, so
nothing looks unusual, but they can resolve across that junction boundary — and
`std::fs::rename` is `MoveFileExW` with `MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING` and *not*
`MOVEFILE_COPY_ALLOWED`, so a cross-volume move fails outright rather than
degrading to a copy. Creating files still works, which is why everything else
about the install looks healthy.
So the fix is not to make the rename work — it is to stop treating it as the
only way to persist. `write_atomic` now falls back to writing the target in
place when the atomic route fails. That is the same operation the identity files
already use, and those demonstrably round-trip on the affected installs, so the
fallback lands on a path we know resolves. It trades crash-atomicity for exactly
the writes that would otherwise be lost, and nowhere else: temp+rename stays the
normal route everywhere it works.
Writing into a redirected location cannot desync from reading it — Microsoft
documents one private-location-first resolution order for both, so whichever
layer a write lands in is the layer the next read finds. The fallback verifies
anyway, by reading the bytes straight back: a write that reports success and
disappears is precisely the bug being fixed, so this path does not get to claim
success on an `Ok(())` alone. It costs nothing normally — it only runs on an
install that has already shown it does something unusual.
Two things this uncovered on the way:
The temp file was a single shared `<name>.json.tmp`, but these stores have five
whole-file writers (WinUI shell, session, console UI, CLI, Decky). Two saving at
once collide on it — on Windows the second write hits a sharing violation, and
worse, one process can rename the other's half-written bytes over the target.
The scratch path now carries the pid.
And none of this was visible to anyone. Every save on this page is
fire-and-forget by design (a failed settings write must never take a stream
down), so ~15 call sites discard the error and the UI cheerfully shows the
toggle you just moved. The reporter had no log file to send either, because
"Open log folder" was handing out a phantom path — a separate bug, already fixed

Merge main into feat/android-pad-audio
86 commits of main, including the whole M1-M12 haptics sweep. Twelve conflicting files; three of them were more than textual. **The capability bits collided.** Both branches allocated the SAME wire bits for DIFFERENT features: `client_caps 0x04` and `host_caps 0x20` are redundant desktop audio on main and pad audio here. Merged naively, a peer would negotiate one and get the other. Pad audio moves to the next free bits — `CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO = 0x08`, `HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO = 0x40` — and the `abi.rs` mirrors move with them (their compile-time equality assertions caught the mismatch, which is exactly what they are for). **Both branches also claimed ABI v15.** Main's shipped (the rumble-policy floor), so the pad-audio surface becomes **v16**. **`native/input.rs` would have reintroduced a fixed bug.** This branch resets `rumble_seq[idx]` on pad removal; M1 established that the client's reorder gate is per-connection with no reset path, so restarting the host counter strands every later envelope until it climbs back. Took main's seq-preserving `clear_pad_feedback` and kept only the branch's `pad_streams.stop(idx)`. The rest: `wiring_plan::plan` now delegates to main's `plan_with_formats`, so the pad-endpoint filter moved into that body and the predicate behind it is factored out as `is_pad_render` (also what B10 needs); `Ds5Feedback::AUDIO` derives from main's `REPORT_ID_LEN` like its siblings; `AudioCtl` joins the explicitly-listed unhandled variants so the guard-false case is covered rather than swept up by a `_`; `include/punktfunk_core.h` regenerated rather than hand-merged. |

feat(clients/input): system buttons route around local overlays
Pressing guide/Steam/QAM collided with the client device's own shell: iOS 26 opens its Game Overlay for the Home press (no app opt-out until iOS 27 makes it a user setting), and a Gaming-Mode client opened BOTH Steam overlays for one press — the local one covering the stream. Two cross-client tier-P settings, zero wire changes: - system_buttons (auto|forward|local): raw guide+misc1 passthrough. Auto forwards everywhere EXCEPT under gamescope, where SteamOS reacts to the same physical press no matter what. - guide_gesture (auto|on|off): hold Select ALONE ~350ms sends the HOST's guide, down until release — held on, that's the host's long-press, which opens a Gaming-Mode host's QAM for regular pads. A Select tap is delivered on release with its up TAP_PRESS (50ms) behind, because per-transition sends fold into seq'd GamepadState snapshots and a back-to-back pair can coalesce into no press at all. A Select inside a combo (the escape chord) passes through untouched. Auto arms it only where the raw press can't reach the host cleanly: gamescope, iOS/iPadOS, tvOS. The same SelectGesture rules live in pf-client-core (pure state machine + unit tests), the Apple client (mask-diff adaptation in GamepadCapture), and Android's GamepadRouter. Settings rows on every surface (GTK, WinUI, console UI, Decky, Apple x2, Android x2) with profile plumbing throughout. punktfunk-session grows a control socket ($XDG_RUNTIME_DIR[/app/$FLATPAK_ID]/punktfunk-session-ctl.sock — the one runtime path a flatpak and the host see identically): 'guide'/'qam' verbs inject synthetic taps. The Decky panel gains a Host menus section (visible while the client runs) whose buttons press the host's Steam/QAM and close the local menu so the host's shows through. iOS 27's GCControllerHomeButtonSettingsManager deep-link is a TODO (the class needs the Xcode 27 SDK to compile). Docs: input, client-settings, steam-deck. Design: punktfunk-planning design/system-buttons-routing.md. Gates: docker clippy --all-targets --locked -D warnings + tests (pf-client-core 88 incl. 6 new gesture tests, pf-console-ui 47), cargo fmt --all --check, swift build (macOS), gradle kit+app compile, decky tsc --noEmit + py_compile. clients/windows not compiled (no box). |

fix(cli): discover reads the host store without writing to it
`KnownHosts::load()` mints a stable id for any record that lacks one and SAVES it — which makes
it a write, and `discover` was calling it purely to annotate what the browse found with
saved/paired. It never hands those ids back to anyone.
That matters because the Decky panel issues `discover` and `hosts list` together, in parallel.
Against a store written before ids existed, both processes read it, both mint DIFFERENT ids for
the same record, and both save. Whichever loses the race has already handed its ids to its
caller — so the panel could draw a row whose host reference no longer resolves, and pressing it
would exit 5 ("no saved host matches") until the next refresh settled things.
`KnownHosts::read()` is `load` without the mint: the store exactly as it is on disk. `discover`
uses it; every caller that dials a host by id still uses `load`, so ids are still minted the
first time anything needs one.
Verified on a fixture store with no ids: `punktfunk discover` leaves it byte-identical, and a
following `punktfunk hosts list` mints as before.

feat(client/present): the desktop presenter gains the Apple/Android intent model
WP1+WP2 of design/desktop-presentation-rebuild.md. The shared Linux/Windows session client presented arrival-paced with no pacing layer at all: two depth-2 newest-wins hops into a drain-to-newest and an immediate present. That IS the lowest-latency intent, but it was unnamed, unselectable, and had no alternative — and on a surface without MAILBOX (AMD's Windows driver offers none, and any compositor holding images does the same) the swapchain's own FIFO becomes a standing queue worth a measured 11-13 ms at 60 Hz. WP1 — the settings cluster, under the keys the Apple client already writes into the shared profile catalog (present_priority / smooth_buffer / vsync / allow_vrr): mismatched names would ride SettingsOverlay::extra, carried but never applied. PresentPriority::resolve mirrors the Android reference exactly (anything but an explicit "smooth" is latency; a buffer outside 1..=3 becomes 2), so a profile authored on any client means the same thing on all of them. Only the first two are consumed here; vsync/allow_vrr land in WP3. WP2 — the engine (present_pace.rs, pure state + arithmetic, 6 tests): - FrameStore: newest-wins slot, or the smoothing FIFO with preroll-to-capacity, drop-oldest overflow, and an underflow that re-arms the preroll (repeat by omission) — the Apple/Android semantics, with qDrop/qDry counters. - LatchClock: the panel grid learned from VK_KHR_present_wait glass stamps, min positive spacing capped by the mode refresh (measured, never queried — VRR and Android's per-uid refresh lie both punish trusting a reported rate). It now also publishes the host-facing LatchGrid, so the phase-lock report and the local scheduler cannot disagree about the grid. - PresentGate: one undisplayed present in flight on FIFO surfaces, with the 100 ms stale force-open. This is the standing-queue killer, and it is inert on MAILBOX/IMMEDIATE and without present timing — where behaviour stays byte-for-byte the shipped arrival pacing. Wiring: glass samples drain every pass (a 1 Hz batch would starve clock and gate) and the waiter pushes an SDL wake, so a gate reopen never waits out the event timeout; smoothness serves one frame per latch slot and tightens the loop's wait to that deadline; the adaptive slot margin starts at 0 and widens +500 us per missed window toward 2.5 ms (a fixed lead was measured to be pure display tax). PUNKTFUNK_PRESENTER=arrival disables the whole engine for field A/B without a rebuild. PyroWave collapses smoothness to latency for the stream: its plane-ring retirement accounting assumes the depth-2 newest-wins hand-off, and all-intra frames make buffering moot anyway. Gates (punktfunk-rust-ci, linux/amd64, sources touched first so a warm target cannot print a vacuous Finished): clippy -D warnings across pf-client-core, pf-presenter and punktfunk-client-session; 80 + 32 tests pass; rustfmt clean. fix(client/windows): settings stop going stale behind your back, and the log has a door
A field reporter's codec setting "changed by itself" between sessions. Nothing writes the negotiated codec back — what they saw was a stale snapshot. `AppCtx.settings` is loaded ONCE at process start and the page renders from it, but this process is not the file's only writer (the spawned session persists its match-window size, the console UI and Decky save too), so the page showed values another process had already replaced — until a row was touched and `commit`'s rebase pulled the file in, at which point the value visibly jumped. The 2026-07-31 rebase fix covered the whole-file writers and missed two spots: nothing re-based on page ENTRY, and the profile-scope commit arm cloned the snapshot without reloading, so overlay absorption diffed against stale globals. Both now re-base on the file. Two more ways a setting could vanish or cost time: * An older binary's whole-file save DROPPED a newer client's keys — `Settings` had no unknown-key passthrough, unlike `SettingsOverlay`, whose `extra` map already gives profiles exactly that contract. Extended to the globals: additive, empty on every existing store, and an empty map serializes to nothing so no file churns. (`save()` was already temp+rename, so the torn-file → silent-Default reset was closed.) * "Check the client log" never said WHERE. Settings ▸ About grows an Open log folder row (%LOCALAPPDATA%\punktfunk\logs, folder not file so the rotated .old generation is in reach), and the failed-spawn banner now names the path. The 4:4:4 caption said "HEVC only, and only where the host can encode it", which sends people hunting: the host gate is PyroWave or an NVENC backend. It says so now. feat(clients/input): controllers can stop being forwarded, for couches that hand the pad over another way
A controller that reaches the host by USB passthrough — VirtualHere and friends, or simply a pad plugged into the host — arrived there twice: once as the real device, once as the virtual pad this client built from the same hands. Games read both, so a stick drifts against the centred second pad and menus take every input twice. New per-client setting, "Forward controllers", default on (today's behaviour). It is tier-P, so a profile can decline what another profile forwards. On Linux and Windows it is deliberately stronger than "send nothing". Opening a controller is what CLAIMS it — SDL's HIDAPI drivers take the device node — and a claimed device is one a passthrough tool cannot bind, so with this off the session opens no slot at all and never enables the Valve HIDAPI drivers. Menu navigation is untouched: the launcher still opens the active pad, and a session supersedes menu mode whether it forwards or not, so the pad is free for the whole time a stream is up. The consequence, documented at both the setting and the chord: the controller escape chord is read off forwarded pads, so it is unavailable there. The Apple and Android input stacks claim nothing, so those clients keep their slots and their chords and only gate the wire sends — losing tvOS's only controller way out of a stream would have been the worse bug. Android does stop its DualSense and Steam Controller 2 USB captures, which do claim the device. Surfaces: GTK, WinUI, the console settings screen, Apple's touch and gamepad settings, the Android touch and gamepad settings, and Decky (which also hides the rows that now have nothing to act on). Everywhere the "which pad" and "pad type" rows grey out while it is off. Verified: cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings + 79 tests on pf-client-core, pf-console-ui, punktfunk-client-session and punktfunk-client-linux (linux/amd64 container, gate proven non-vacuous with a planted error); swift build for the Apple clients; gradle compile + 49 unit tests for Android (likewise proven); tsc for Decky. clients/windows is UNCOMPILED — both Windows boxes were offline; its edits were reviewed against the helper signatures by hand. feat(pad-audio): DualSense audio haptics + speaker, host->client end to end
The 0xD1 pad-audio plane streams a DualSense's voice-coil haptics (back channel pair, 5 ms Opus frames) and speaker (front pair, 10 ms) per pad from a Windows host to the SDL clients, which render them into a USB DualSense's own 4-channel audio device. Wire (punktfunk-core, ABI v15): PAD_AUDIO_MAGIC 0xD1 [pad][kind][seq][pts] [opus]; CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x04 / HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x20; per-pad render capability rides GamepadArrival flags bits 8/9, sent only toward a host that advertised its cap so old hosts see byte-identical arrivals; silence is a frozen seq (mic-mute discipline), loss is a seq gap concealed via AudioGapTracker. HidOutput::AudioCtl (0xCD kind 0x06) forwards the 0x02 report's audio-control bytes 5..=10 change-only, value-deduped, with a once-per-pad "title asserted haptics-select" diagnosis log. Windows host endpoint provider (audio/windows/pad_endpoint.rs): per-pad render endpoints are additional devnode instances of Valve's Steam Streaming Speakers driver (SetupDiRegisterDeviceInfo, NOT the class installer - it needs an interactive window station), stamped with DualSense identity: desc "Wireless Controller", device name "DualSense Wireless Controller", ContainerId = the virtual pad's PFDS GUID, 4ch/48k format triplet. IPropertyStore route first, ACL-repaired registry fallback (the MMDevices keys deny writes even to SYSTEM; the owner's implicit WRITE_DAC + an ACE for S-1-5-18 resolved by SID is the way in). Provisioned at host startup (PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO, PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO_SLOTS, default 1), idempotent via a persisted PunktfunkPadIndex marker; pad endpoints are structurally ineligible for the mic/loopback wiring plan and guarded against default- device theft; capture is WASAPI loopback on the stamped endpoint. Devtest: punktfunk-host pad-endpoint ensure|remove|status. Host service (native/pad_audio.rs): per-(session,pad) thread, loopback 4ch -> pair splitter -> per-kind stereo Opus (48k LowDelay CBR 64k) -> per-kind silence gate (opens at peak>=1e-3, 250 ms hangover, gated = no send + frozen seq) -> datagrams. Spawned from the native input pump when a DualSense/Edge arrival carries audio bits and both caps negotiated; idempotent re-arrivals; reaped on remove and teardown. Client tier A (pf-client-core/pad_audio.rs): settings pad_haptics (default on) and pad_speaker (default "pad"); tier A = wired USB DS5/Edge via SDL connection state with an audio-sibling fallback; correlation maps the SDL HID path to the pad's own render endpoint (Windows: ContainerId match + 4ch gate via registry; Linux: Sony sink signature); renderer decodes both kinds into a quad interleave and plays it on the pad's endpoint (WASAPI autoconvert / PipeWire target.object, 240-2400 frame ring floor, dont-reconnect so an unplug never re-routes haptics to the desktop speakers). SDL's DualSense driver sets "disable audio haptics" whenever it drives rumble emulation, so tier-A pads suppress wire rumble and send one cleared-enable-bits effects packet to keep the actuators live; AudioCtl bytes fold back into the effects packet at report-minus-one offsets. Verification: punktfunk-core 265 tests (macOS) + clippy -D warnings (mac + Linux docker); pf-inject 85 tests (Linux docker); punktfunk-host cargo check + clippy + 19 pad tests + 46 audio-module tests (Windows box); pf-client-core 30 tests + clippy (Linux docker CI image) + cargo check (Windows box); punktfunk-client-session clippy (Linux) + check (Windows); cargo fmt --all --check clean on the final tree. NOT yet verified: any on-glass run (host deploy + real title + physical pad), the stamp-route split at runtime, exclusive-mode Initialize isolation, Linux-host emission (the per-pad PipeWire sink is not in this change - Windows hosts only). Scope excluded deliberately: tier B (Apple CoreHaptics) and tier C (haptics->rumble derivation), pad_speaker="mix", Android leg, settings UI surfaces (keys are serde-defaulted), GameStream-plane arrivals (audio_caps always 0 there). Merge origin/main into audio/mic-latency-echo
Main moved through the same surfaces while the audio work was in flight, so three files needed hand-resolution: - clients/windows/src/app/settings.rs — main gave Windows its speaker and microphone endpoint pickers, the gap this branch could only report. Both keep their rows: the pickers, then Echo cancellation, and the microphone description keeps the sentence naming the mute chord. - crates/pf-console-ui/src/screens/settings.rs — both sides grew the couch row list. Main's seven new rows and Echo cancellation are all reachable in Gaming Mode; the count is 22 and the rationale comment names echo cancellation among the fields that would otherwise be unreachable there. - crates/pf-presenter/src/run.rs — both sides added a stats test at the same line. Both are kept. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(clients): a host that re-keys stops locking the client out for good
Reinstall a host, wipe its ProgramData, or otherwise regenerate its identity, and the desktop clients refused it forever: "Host identity rejected — wrong fingerprint, or the host requires pairing", including immediately after a successful re-pair. There was no way out of it from the UI — the host list showed two cards for one address and forgetting the wrong one was a guess. `KnownHosts::upsert` matches on the FINGERPRINT, which is what lets a host that moved address keep its record and everything the user set on it. A host that changed identity matched nothing, so pairing appended a SECOND record for an address that already had one, and `find_by_addr` returned whichever came first in the file — the dead one, every time. Trust decisions (PIN ceremony, delegated approval, TOFU accept, headless pair — all funnelled through `persist_host`, plus the Windows shell's two direct upserts) now go through `upsert_trusted`, which retires any OTHER record for that address. Retired means DELETED, not demoted: a record whose certificate the host no longer holds cannot connect, so keeping it only reproduces the two- cards-one-address confusion this fixes. What described the box rather than the identity — its MAC, its OS chain, the bound profile, the pinned cards, when it was last used — moves onto the record that survives, so a reinstall doesn't quietly cost the user their setup. What described the dead identity does not: `paired` and `clipboard_sync` are decisions about one specific certificate and have to be made again for a new one, and the retired record's stable id stays retired (a deep link written from it falls through to the `host=` recovery the link grammar already specifies). Only trust decisions may retire a record. The wake path's address re-key and every learn-from-advert path stay on plain `upsert`: those are driven by unauthenticated mDNS, and letting an advert delete a saved host by claiming its address would trade this bug for a much worse one. A plain reconnect still fails closed on a pin mismatch — nothing here changes what the pin is checked against. Stores that already hold the duplicate recover on the next connect, not at load: which of two records is live isn't knowable at load time and guessing wrong would throw away the good one. Instead `find_by_addr` stops being positional — a real fingerprint beats a placeholder, and among real ones the newest trust decision wins, since records are only ever appended by one. The next successful pair then cleans the store up for good. Every lookup that picks a pin or a per-host decision for a connect now goes through it (the session's pin and clipboard read, the deep-link resolver, orchestrate's plan, both speed tests, the CLI's --wake and --library, which had also been ignoring the port), and an advert's learned MAC/OS lands on the record it identified rather than on a stale namesake that merely came first. feat(client): the mic has an off switch, and echo cancellation has a switch too
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V mutes and unmutes the microphone mid-stream — V for
voice, since M and S were taken. The uplink keeps running while muted:
`MicStreamer::spawn` takes a shared AtomicBool the capture callback reads
every quantum, and a muted callback drains whole frames and sends
nothing. Stopping the stream instead would have re-primed the device
buffers and, on Linux, re-run source selection on every unmute — a
second of glitch for a key people press mid-sentence. The sequence
counter deliberately does NOT advance while muted, so the host sees one
continuous sequence with a pause rather than a gap the size of the mute,
which its de-jitter would try to conceal frame by frame (its 600 ms
stale-flush covers the rest).
The mute lives on SessionHandle as a MicControl with two flags, not one:
`live` is raised by the pump only once the uplink is actually running, so
a session with the mic off in Settings — or whose capture device wouldn't
open — reports "nothing to mute", the chord says so in the log, and no
indicator appears. Per session, never persisted.
Muted state draws as a persistent "Microphone muted" badge in the stream's
top-right corner, off `FrameCtx::mic_muted` rather than the stats text: it
has to be there with the stats overlay Off, which is where most people
leave it. The Detailed mic line still reads throughput, so it simply falls
to zero — the badge is what answers "am I muted".
Echo cancellation stops being an env-only lever. `Settings::echo_cancel`
(default on, `#[serde(default)]` so every stored file loads with it on)
now gates the same hooks PUNKTFUNK_NO_AEC gated: the echo-cancelled
PipeWire source preference and WASAPI's Communications stream category.
The env var still wins, one-way — it can only turn AEC off, never back on
— and both `aec_enabled` helpers say so. The row ships in the GTK, WinUI
and console settings, under the microphone toggle and greyed out while it
is off, matching what Apple and Android shipped in wave 1.
SettingsOverlay grows `echo_cancel` as a first-class field — apply,
absorb, clear, is_empty — instead of riding the `extra` passthrough, where
`clear_override("echo_cancel")` answered false. The JSON key is the one
Apple and Android already write, so one catalog round-trips through all
three.

fix(clients): settings saves stop reverting each other, Windows gets audio pickers, and a game link launches its game
The rest of the client-gaps handoff, plus what a parity sweep surfaced: * Every whole-file settings save rebases on the file first — the GTK dialog close and its two speed-test apply arms, the Windows per-control commit, the console screen. The file has five writers and no merge (profiles.rs documents the debt); saving a shell-lifetime snapshot silently reverted whatever another writer stored meanwhile, most visibly the spawner-persisted match-window size (item 4). * Windows honors the Speaker/Microphone picks: `audio_wasapi` grows endpoint enumeration (on its own MTA thread — UI threads are STA) and resolves PUNKTFUNK_AUDIO_SINK/SOURCE as endpoint ids, falling back to the default when the picked device is gone; the settings page gets the two rows (defaults scope, "(not detected)" like the GPU row). `speaker_device`/`mic_device` stop being Linux-only fields (item 5). * A punktfunk:// link with `launch=` opened a plain desktop session on Windows — the id was parsed, validated, planned, and dropped at the last hop. It now rides `initiate_launch` (plus a waking variant for the dial-first path). Linux always forwarded it. * The console UI offered "VAAPI" on Windows — a dead option there that also hid d3d11va, the actual Windows hardware path. The decoder list is per-OS now. * The Windows gamepad picker learns "Steam Deck" (the GTK picker had it; the host-side pad has always existed). * Doc fixes: gpu.rs named a nonexistent env var (PUNKTFUNK_ADAPTER → PUNKTFUNK_VK_ADAPTER), and session/Cargo.toml claimed video decode is Linux-only while explaining what the ARM64 leg drops. feat(client): "Capture system shortcuts" finally decides where Alt+Tab goes
The toggle has been stored, profileable and rendered in two settings UIs since profiles landed, and nothing read it. Windows grabbed the keyboard whenever input was captured, setting or no setting; Linux never grabbed at all, because the grab sat behind `#[cfg(windows)]` with a comment deferring the compositor story to "the shells" — which never picked it up. `Settings.inhibit_shortcuts` now reaches the presenter and gates the grab, on both platforms. SDL3 already maps `SDL_SetWindowKeyboardGrab` onto `zwp_keyboard_shortcuts_inhibit_manager_v1` on Wayland and `XGrabKeyboard` (plus `_XWAYLAND_MAY_GRAB_KEYBOARD`) on X11, so dropping the cfg is the Linux fix. Capture state still gates it, so releasing input hands the chords straight back, and the desktop mouse model never grabs. A compositor with no shortcuts-inhibit global says so once instead of failing silently — at debug under gamescope, which has no shortcuts to inhibit in the first place. feat(core): every connect introduces the device by name
The wire always had Hello.name and the host always honored it - but the connect path hardcoded None (only the PIN-pairing ceremony sent a name), so every no-PIN "request access" knock surfaced as the fingerprint placeholder "device abcd1234", and approving one without retyping a name persisted that placeholder into the trust store forever. NativeClient::connect now takes the device name. The session workers and the probe connects pass trust::device_name() (the hostname), the C ABI defaults to the same without a signature change (an ex10 variant can make it explicit if an embedder wants a custom label), and Android threads Build.MODEL through nativeConnect - the same convention its pairing dialogs already use for nativePair. The host, in turn, resolves the streaming client's display name (trust store first, so an approval-time rename wins; else the sanitized Hello name) and exposes it as client_name in GET /api/v1/local/summary for the tray's connect toast - a deliberate, documented loosening of that route's "no device names" contract, in the local user's favor: it tells them who is on their machine. A paired-but-idle device's name still never appears, which the mgmt tests now pin explicitly. openapi.json, its docs-site copy, and the SDK bindings regenerate. feat(client): the desktop clients wear the host's OS mark
The client half of the host's new `os=` advert, shared once in pf-client-core: `sanitize_os` (mDNS is unauthenticated input — lowercase `[a-z0-9._-]` tokens, capped) and `os_icon_tokens`, the most-specific-first walk with the brand aliases (`macos`→apple, `steamos`→steam) every platform resolves through. `DiscoveredHost` carries the chain, `KnownHost` persists it (`serde(default)`, elided when empty — older stores load unchanged and older clients read back exactly what they wrote), `upsert` moves it only when carried, and `learn_os` mirrors `learn_mac` — no-op, no disk write when unchanged — so the mark survives the host going to sleep. GTK shells: the card's status row leads with a recolorable symbolic glyph. That needed real embedded assets — the shells had none — so `data/` gains the ten `pf-os-*-symbolic` SVGs compiled into a gresource (new build.rs, glib-build-tools) and registered on the icon theme at startup; the Adwaita theme then tints them like every other status glyph. WinUI shell: reactor renders raster-from-URI only, so the embedded mid-gray PNGs (legible on both themes) materialize once into %LOCALAPPDATA%\punktfunk\os-icons\ — the library's poster-art pattern — and the tile's status row leads with a 16px image. The couch UI plumbs `HostRow.os` (live advert preferred, else the store) for a Skia glyph that is a declared follow-up; `--list-hosts` / `hosts --json` emit the stored chain so the Decky plugin can read it. A host that advertises no `os` renders everywhere exactly as it did before the field existed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(client/linux): the override marker appears on touch, profiles get a colour, and 4:4:4 gets a switch
Three things found by actually driving the client. **The marker didn't appear until you reopened the dialog.** It was rendered once, at build time, from the stored overlay — so changing a setting inside a profile looked like it did nothing. The design says touching a control creates the override and the marker appears immediately, and it has to: a user who changes a row and sees no acknowledgement has no reason to believe it took. Every profileable row now builds its dot and reset hidden, and the same handler that records the touch reveals them. Resetting a row touched in the same sitting also un-touches it, so the commit can't re-write what the reset just removed. **Profiles had no colour.** `accent` has been in the schema since P0 and nothing could set it, which left every chip the same grey — and telling profiles apart at a glance across a grid is the entire reason chips exist. Creating a profile now picks a colour in the same breath as its name (hunting for it afterwards is what leaves them all grey), an existing profile has a Colour row, and host-card chips are tinted with it. A palette of eight rather than a free picker: legibility across light and dark is the job, and the schema still accepts any `#RRGGBB` a hand-edit or a future picker writes. Anything that isn't `#RRGGBB` is refused rather than interpolated into CSS, and each distinct colour registers one display-wide rule (per-widget providers are gone since GTK 4.10). **4:4:4 had no switch anywhere but Apple.** `VIDEO_CAP_444` has been on the wire for a while with only `punktfunk-probe`'s env var to set it. It is now a setting — and a profileable one, which is the point: full chroma is what makes small text and thin UI lines crisp, so a "Work" profile wants it where "Game" usually doesn't. The host still gates it on its own policy, HEVC, and a GPU that can actually encode it; advertising only says "I can decode this and I want it". feat(client): the brain layer — one connect plan, one wake machine, one spawn
C0 of design/client-architecture-split.md. Wake-then-connect exists three times today — GTK's `WakeConnect`/`wake_fallback`, the WinUI shell's `wake_and_connect` (whose comment says it "mirrors the Apple HostWaker"), and Apple's `HostWaker` itself — and the deep-link and profile work was about to make it five. `pf-client-core` already held the ingredients (wol, discovery, trust, library, session); what was missing was the layer that composes them, so every front-end composed them itself. `ConnectPlan` is a resolved intent: which host, which pin, which launch id, which profile, the effective settings, whether to wake. One constructor per door — a card click, a CLI verb, a URL — one type out. `ConnectPlan::resolve` is pure (stores in, plan out), which is what lets the URL router be tested without a config directory; `for_host` is the convenience that loads them. `plan_from_link` is where the deep-link security rules actually live, rather than in each shell: a contradicted fingerprint refuses and says which host it was about, an ambiguous name refuses instead of picking the first, a profile the catalog can't honor refuses BEFORE anything is dialled, and an unknown — or known-but-never-pinned — host becomes a confirmation sheet carrying the claimed name and expected pin, so the first connect is verified rather than blind TOFU. Preempting a live session stays with the caller: only the front-end knows one is running. `WakeWait` is Apple's `HostWaker` cadence as a pure step function — packet at 0 s and every 6 s, presence polled every second, 90 s budget, and a PARK (not an error) at the end, because "it didn't wake in 90 s" is usually "give it 10 more". As a step function each front-end drives it from its own loop and they still agree, and the whole cadence is testable without waiting 90 seconds. Session spawn, its argv and its stdout contract move here too, and the GTK shell now spawns through them — so "which flags does a stream get" and "what does ready mean" have one answer for the shells, the console and the coming CLI. `--profile` deliberately does NOT ride a plain card click: the session resolves the host's binding through the same helper, and passing it would be a second source of truth for one decision. Not yet adopted: the two shells' wake paths. That swap changes the most-used path in the product and the handoff wants it verified on glass with a genuinely sleeping host, which this session couldn't do — so the state machine lands, the duplication stays until it can be verified away. feat(client): settings profiles — the override catalog, the one resolver, and the session flag
A client setting is global today: pick 4K@120 HDR and the retro box gets it too.
The one escape hatch (per-host `clipboard_sync`) proves the shape works but covers a
single field. This is P0 of design/client-settings-profiles.md — the headless core the
shells, Apple, Android and the deep-link grammar all build against. No UI yet.
A profile is a NAMED BUNDLE OF OVERRIDES, not a snapshot: `SettingsOverlay` is sparse
`Option`s, so a field the user never touched keeps following the global value live, and
fixing a global once fixes it everywhere. `Some(x)` equal to today's global is still
meaningful — it pins x against a later global change — which is why the UI will write
`Some` on touch and `None` on an explicit reset, never by diffing.
The catalog is its own `client-profiles.json`, deliberately not part of the settings
file: that file has five whole-file load-modify-save writers with no merge, so a profile
written by one would be dropped by the next. Which host uses which profile is a field on
the host record instead of a map keyed by host — that is what dissolves the client's
long-standing "what identifies a host record" question for this feature.
Resolution has exactly one implementation, `trust::effective_settings()`:
effective = overlay(profile).apply(global)
profile = one-off pick ?? host binding ?? none
Both session construction sites go through it (`main.rs` AND `console.rs` — touching one
and not the other is a Windows-only build break), so the console, and therefore Decky,
honor host bindings with no work of their own. Nothing here can fail a connect: a
deleted binding resolves as "no profile", and a one-off that can't be honored falls back
to the DEFAULTS rather than to the host's own profile — "connect with Work" must never
quietly stream "Game". `--profile <id|name>` is the one-off door for the shells' coming
"Connect with ▸" and for `punktfunk://…&profile=`; `--profile ""` forces the defaults on
a bound host. The active profile's name closes the stats overlay's first line, so
"which profile am I on?" is answerable without leaving the stream.
Also here, because this effort touches every one of these anyway:
- `KnownHost` gains `profile_id`, `pinned_profiles` and a lazily minted stable `id`. The
id is groundwork (design §4.5) — no lookup is re-keyed, `fp_hex`/`addr:port` stay.
- `upsert` now preserves the state the USER set on a record — the profile binding, its
pins, the clipboard decision, the id — against refreshes that carry none of it.
`clipboard_sync` survived that only because the function happened not to mention it.
- `KnownHost::default()` exists so construction sites read `..Default::default()`; five
hand-written literals were exactly how a new field gets silently dropped on re-pair.
- All three client stores now write temp+rename. A torn settings file loads as `Default`
— i.e. silently resets every setting the user has.

feat(session): headless --pair, so a box with only SSH can enrol
`punktfunk-session --pair <PIN> --connect host[:port]` runs the SPAKE2 ceremony with no window and no toolkit, prints the same `paired <addr>:<port> fp=<hex>` line as `punktfunk-client --pair`, and exits. Until now the PIN ceremony lived only in the GTK shell or the Skia console, so enrolling an embedded/kiosk client meant installing a desktop on it — or copying the identity store by hand. Dispatches above every graphics call (the machine may have no display) and is in the `--no-default-features` build: enrolling must never be the reason a minimal image pulls in Skia. `--name` defaults to the hostname instead of the desktop path's hardcoded "Steam Deck". `forget_placeholder` and `device_name` move into pf_client_core::trust so the two binaries share one implementation rather than the session re-deriving them. feat(client/input): desktop (absolute) mouse mode — remote-desktop sweep M1
New physical-mouse model beside capture: Desktop leaves the pointer uncaptured and sends absolute positions through the letterbox (MouseMoveAbs — every host injector already consumes it). Capture stays the default and the game model. - pf-client-core: MouseMode (capture|desktop) persisted in Settings, default capture so existing stores are unchanged. - pf-presenter: Capture grows a desktop model — latest-wins pending abs position coalesced per loop iteration (same 1000 Hz discipline as relative), flushed before clicks/keys/wheel so they land where the cursor is; Ctrl+Alt+Shift+M flips the model live; local cursor stays hidden over the window (the host's composited cursor is the one you see until the M2 cursor channel); Windows keyboard grab only engages for capture (a desktop stream is something you Alt-Tab away from). - gamescope gating: its EIS is relative-only, so desktop mode is pinned off there (resolved_compositor), with a log note. - Settings surfaces: GTK row (dynamic caption), WinUI combo, console-UI row + step test, capture-hint line. Verified: fmt + clippy -D warnings + tests (33/40/19) on Linux .21; clippy -D warnings for all five crates incl. punktfunk-client-windows native on .173. fix(host/linux): survive and self-heal dead gamescope sessions on headless SteamOS boxes
Three fixes for the "most connects simply fail" trap on a SteamOS host with no physical display (VM testbox, panel-less mini PC): - restore path: skip the restore-to-physical-panel when no DRM connector reports a connected display — removing the headless drop-in and restarting gamescope-session.target on such a box just crash-loops gamescope and strands every later connect on "no usable compositor". Keep the headless session (and the takeover state) instead. - connect path: when no live graphical session exists but the MANAGED gamescope infra is present (SteamOS gamescope-session / Bazzite session-plus), route to the gamescope takeover — which rebuilds the session at the client's mode — instead of failing the connect. - error delivery: a session-setup failure used to just drop the QUIC connection, reaching the client as "control stream finished mid-frame" (indistinguishable from transport trouble). Close with a typed setup-failed code (0x68, RejectedSetupFailed = -29) carrying the error text, and give the client handshake/pairing error paths a short grace for the CONNECTION_CLOSE to beat the stream error it caused. feat(client): device-pick plumbing — GPU enumeration + audio endpoint targeting
The Settings GPU pick existed (adapter → PUNKTFUNK_VK_ADAPTER) but no Linux shell could enumerate anything to pick: the GTK shell deliberately links no Vulkan. pf_presenter::vk::list_adapters() reads the physical devices' marketing names (no surface, discrete first, deduped — the name is the whole match key in pick_device), surfaced as `punktfunk-session --list-adapters`. Audio gets the same treatment for the new speaker_device/mic_device settings (PipeWire node.name; empty = default): session main maps them onto PUNKTFUNK_AUDIO_SINK/SOURCE — a hand-set env still wins, like the adapter — and the playback/mic streams pass them as `target.object` (raw key: the keys::TARGET_OBJECT constant is feature-gated on a newer libpipewire than we require). pf_client_core::audio::devices() is the registry roundtrip the pickers read, exposed for debugging as `punktfunk-session --list-audio`. The WASAPI leg (Windows endpoint IDs) is still to come; the fields are ignored there. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(client/windows): per-host clipboard toggle
The bridge landed always-on whenever the host permitted it; sharing a clipboard is a trust decision about a specific host, so it needs to be opted into. Mirrors the Apple client's per-host model (StoredHost.clipboardSync, "Share clipboard with this host") rather than a global switch: KnownHost::clipboard_sync, toggled from the host card's overflow menu, default off. The session binary resolves the stored flag itself in session_params, so a direct connect and the console's own launches honor the same decision without every caller having to remember to pass it. feat(client/windows): invert scroll direction
The Apple client's toggle, wired through the shared session presenter: Settings::invert_scroll -> SessionOpts -> Capture, applied at the single seam where wheel deltas enter (before accumulation, so the fractional remainders stay consistent with what was actually sent). fix(client/windows): left-align setting captions, drop the width cap, add auto-wake
Three follow-ups to the parity sweep: - Captions read centred: a TextBlock defaults to Stretch alignment, so the MaxWidth cap left it floating in the middle of the leftover width instead of sitting under its control. Pin them (and the footers) Left. - The settings column kept the shared page() 640px cap, which -- next to the NavigationView pane spending the left third -- squeezed the cards into a narrow ribbon. Drop the cap here. - Auto-wake on connect (the Apple client's toggle) is now a setting rather than unconditional behavior. Default on, which is what it did before. Gating the flow's ENTRY, not its packet sends: with it off a failed dial just fails, instead of showing a "Waking..." wait that would never send a packet to end itself. The explicit "Wake" host-card menu action is deliberately NOT gated -- that is the user asking directly. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(clients): render-scale setting on every client — shared punktfunk_core::render_scale
Client-side supersampling/downscaling: the client asks the host to render and encode at chosen-resolution × scale (the host does no scaling) and the presenter rescales the decoded frame to the display. >1 supersamples for sharpness; <1 lightens the host GPU and the link. Default 1.0 = Native, the prior behavior. The geometry lives once in punktfunk_core::render_scale (multiply, preserve aspect ratio, floor to even, clamp to the codec's per-axis ceiling — 4096 for H.264, 8192 otherwise), the Rust twin of the Apple client's RenderScale.swift, consumed by the native session client, the presenter's match-window path, the Windows/Linux settings UIs, Decky, and Android (settings + host connect + unit test). Implemented and platform-verified by the Apple-client-features session (Linux+Android+Apple green there); the punktfunk-core wiring (pub mod render_scale) is restored here after being lost in a working-tree reconciliation. feat: PyroWave Phase 3 — pinned rate, all-intra silencing, opt-in UI, notices, docs
plan §4.6 + Phase 3 productization: - Pinned bitrate: an Automatic client (bitrate 0) on a PyroWave session resolves to the codec's ~1.6 bpp operating point for the mode (≈200 Mbps at 1080p60) instead of the 20 Mbps H.26x default; explicit rates are honored. Mid-stream SetBitrate retargets are refused with the pinned rate acked (guards old/foreign clients), and the client-side AIMD controller + startup capacity probe stay off for the codec — no rate descent into wavelet mush, no climb probe whose VBV reasoning doesn't apply to hard per-frame CBR. Unit-tested. - All-intra silencing: the data plane drops drained keyframe/RFI requests on PyroWave sessions (the next frame IS the recovery), so the forced-IDR cooldown, RFI attempt, and storm coalescing never run. - Opt-in UI: 'PyroWave (wired LAN)' joins the console's Video-codec cycler; trust::Settings maps it to CODEC_PYROWAVE. Safe everywhere by the negotiation contract — an un-advertised preference falls back through the ladder. - FEC: decision recorded — adaptive FEC (10% start, loss-report driven) stays as-is for the MVP opaque-AU mode; the FEC≈0 policy belongs to the Phase-4 datagram-aligned mode. - THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES: the generator now lists third-party trees vendored inside first-party crates (pyrowave, Granite subset, volk, Vulkan-Headers) with their full license texts; file regenerated. - docs-site: 'PyroWave (wired-LAN codec)' page — what it is, the bandwidth table, how to enable it, current limits. Validated on .21: 309 host + 148 core + 26 client tests green, console-ui clean, both feature configs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(touch): cross-client touch-input modes on Linux + Windows
Bring the SDL presenter (Linux/Deck + Windows) to parity with the Android and
Apple clients: a persisted TouchMode selects how a touchscreen drives the host —
* Trackpad (default): relative cursor with pointer ballistics + the shared
gesture vocabulary (tap = left click, two-finger tap = right click,
two-finger drag = scroll, tap-then-drag = held left drag, three-finger tap =
cycle the stats overlay).
* Direct pointer: the cursor jumps to and follows the finger (absolute).
* Touch passthrough: every finger is a real host touchscreen contact.
Previously the presenter had no finger handling, so SDL synthesized mouse events
from touch and — under the stream's relative-mouse lock — walked the host cursor
into the corner (the reported Deck bug). SDL touch->mouse synthesis is now off;
DIRECT touchscreens route through a new incremental gesture engine (a port of
Android TouchInput.kt / Apple TouchMouse.swift), while INDIRECT trackpads keep
driving the mouse. Fingers map through the aspect-fit letterbox onto the content
rect.
TouchMode lives in the shared trust::Settings (default trackpad, so passthrough
is opt-in like the other clients); the GTK and WinUI settings screens both gained
a "Touch input" picker. Gesture engine, letterbox mapping, and settings
back-compat are unit-tested (28 tests green); clippy -D warnings clean; full
Linux client + session build verified on-host.

feat(resize): mid-stream resolution resize — host hardening (H1–H5) + session-binary Match window (C1)
design/midstream-resolution-resize.md Phase 0 + Phase 1. Host (Phase 0): - H1/H5: per-backend Reconfigure acceptance gate — reject for gamescope (all sub-modes; a resize must never relaunch the title) and under the per-client-mode identity policy (a resize would resolve a different display slot). Synthetic stays reconfigurable on purpose (the protocol test source; the C-ABI roundtrip test rides it). Plus a 500 ms host-side min-interval backstop against Reconfigure spam. - H2: rollback/corrective ack — the data plane reports the mode actually live after a failed rebuild (or a refresh the backend capped) through a reconfig_result channel; the control task forwards it as a second accepted Reconfigured so the client's mode slot self-corrects. - H3: live stats mode — SendStats reads a packed AtomicU64 (w|h|hz) updated on every switch instead of latching the session-start mode. - H4: registry::retire(gen) — a mode-switch rebuild force-releases the superseded Linux display, so linger/forever keep-alive policies don't accumulate kept monitors at stale modes. VirtualOutput carries pool_gen (fresh AND reused) and the Pipeline tuple threads it to the switch arm. Client (Phase 1, default off): - Settings: match_window policy + persisted last window size; exposed as the Resolution tri-state (Native / Match window / explicit) in the Skia console, GTK and WinUI settings pages. - pf-presenter: window opens at the persisted size; Hello mode follows the window's pixel size; D2 trigger discipline (400 ms debounce to resize-end, ≥1 s spacing, even-floor + ≥320×200 clamp, each distinct size requested at most once — covers rejects and host rollbacks) as a pure, unit-tested decision; HUD line + title refresh on a switch. - Session binary wires both --connect and --browse paths; the WinUI shell is session-always, so this covers Windows too. Verified: workspace tests + clippy green; synthetic --remode end-to-end; live session-binary run (window at persisted 1000×600 → Hello 1000×600@60). On-glass per-backend matrix (Mutter/KWin/gamescope-reject, keep-alive accumulation) still pending before any default flip. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

fix(security): anti-replay, 0600 client key, open redirect, supply-chain
Address findings from a repo security review:
- core: add a sliding-window anti-replay filter over the AEAD-authenticated
sequence in Session (poll_input/poll_frame), closing the input-replay gap the
data plane previously left to the LAN/VPN trust assumption. 4096-deep window,
unit-tested; the encrypted loopback suite confirms no false drops.
- clients: write the mTLS client private key 0600 and lock the config dir 0700
on Unix (it was world-readable at the umask default), re-locking existing
stores on load. pf-client-core::trust plus the probe's own identity writer.
Windows keeps the %APPDATA% ACL; Android/Apple already wrap the key.
- web: fix a post-login open redirect — resolve `next` via URL and require it to
stay same-origin, rejecting `/\evil.com` and tab/encoding variants the old
`!startsWith("//")` guard missed. Also fixes the dead safeNextPath helper.
- ci: SHA-256-pin the BtbN FFmpeg DLLs bundled into the signed Windows installer
(were fetched from the rolling `latest` tag unverified); fails closed on a
re-roll, matching the VB-CABLE gate.
- ci: fail-open fork-guard on the Windows/Apple host-mode PR build jobs that
share runner labels with the signing jobs. Definitive fix stays server-side
(Gitea outside-collaborator approval / isolated PR runners) — see the notes.

feat(clients): tiered stats overlay everywhere — Compact/Normal/Detailed on every platform
Ship the Android client's 3-tier stats-overlay semantics in every other client (design/stats-unification.md vocabulary): Off → Compact (one line: fps · e2e ms · Mb/s + loss flag) → Normal (mode + e2e p50/p95 + loss counters) → Detailed (decoder path, HDR tag, per-stage latency equation). Apple: new StatsVerbosity in PunktfunkKit persisted under punktfunk.statsVerbosity (migrates the legacy hudEnabled bool: explicit off → Off, else Normal). The existing three-finger tap (TouchMouse, trackpad/pointer modes only — touch passthrough untouched) now cycles the tiers instead of toggling, matching Android; ⌃⌥⇧S (menu + captured-state monitor) cycles the same ladder. Tiered StreamHUDView (compact glass pill / headline HUD / full equation HUD); the iOS corner disconnect also shows in Compact (the pill carries no button). Tier pickers on iOS, macOS, tvOS and the gamepad settings UI. Session stack (Linux + Windows + Deck share punktfunk-session): shared pf_client_core::trust::StatsVerbosity; Settings grows stats_verbosity with a show_stats fallback, and writes keep the legacy bool in sync so pre-tier binaries reading the same JSON agree on off vs on. Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S cycles the tier and re-renders the OSD immediately from the last stats window; the stdout stats: line always carries the full Detailed text so the shell status card and scripts keep a stable shape; --stats bumps Off → Normal without demoting a richer tier. Tier pickers in the GTK dialog, the WinUI settings page and the console-UI settings row; shortcut copy updated (GTK shortcuts window, Windows help, session README). The Windows legacy builtin path keeps its bool HUD. Tests: tier migration/round-trip in trust.rs, tiered stats_text output in pf-presenter. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(console): full gamepad shell — hosts, PIN pairing, settings, OSK, screen transitions
The Skia console UI grows from the single library coverflow into a complete couch shell (Apple gamepad-UI parity), so a Deck/gamescope session is self-sufficient end to end: - Home: host carousel (saved + discovered + Add Host tile) with presence pips, paired locks, wake & connect; A/Y/X/B per the Apple launcher. - In-console SPAKE2 PIN pairing (previously needed the Decky plugin or a desktop), add-host with a controller keyboard, couch settings over the shared Settings store, wake-on-LAN overlay with retry, cancelable dials. - Shell chrome: screen stack with push/pop entrance/exit choreography (slide + fade + recede; aurora↔form backdrop crossfade), per-pad button glyphs (PS shapes vs ABXY, keycaps with no pad), menu haptics, toasts, embedded Geist typography, in-stream start banner. - Steam Deck: our OSK never draws — fields start SDL text input (the new Overlay::text_input_active hook) and Steam's keyboard types; a hint chip points at STEAM + X. Other Linux gets the full gamepad keyboard tray. - punktfunk-session: bare --browse opens Home; --browse host opens that host's library with Home behind it (Decky launches keep working, B now pops instead of quitting). Service threads run discovery, 10 s probes, pairing, wake loops, fetches, and known-hosts persistence. - Presenter contract: Launch actions carry the host, CancelConnect never engages a won race, pad kind/list ride FrameCtx, menu events flow while dialing so B can cancel. Every screen renders to PNG on CPU raster for review (PF_CONSOLE_DUMP=<dir> cargo test -p pf-console-ui -- --ignored dump). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(clients/windows): game library page + session window placement + help polish
UX polish batch 2 (plan workstreams D/E5/E6): - D: a mouse/keyboard game library page over pf-client-core::library (the GTK ui_library.rs counterpart): responsive 2-6 column poster grid (2:3 portraits, store badge, monogram placeholder while art streams in), loading / error+retry / empty / grid states, tap-to-play via a normal spawn carrying --launch id. Poster bytes land in a disk cache (%LOCALAPPDATA%\punktfunk\art-cache) so the Image widget loads file:/// URIs (reactor has no from-bytes source) and revisits render instantly. Reached from a paired host's "Browse library..." menu item behind the new "Show game library (experimental)" Settings toggle (the shared library_enabled field, Apple/GTK parity). A Shared::library_gen generation guard keeps a superseded fetch from publishing (speed-test pattern). - E5: the session window opens at the shell's own top-left (--window-pos, new SessionOpts::window_pos) instead of centered on the primary display - streams land on the monitor the shell is on, and the hide/restore handoff reads as one window changing content. Fullscreen follows that display. - E6: the Help shortcuts add Alt+Enter and the controller escape chord (LB+RB+Start+Back, hold to disconnect). Also: rustfmt normalization of the merged probe helper. feat(clients/windows): single-window handoff, shared settings store, console-UI surfacing
UX polish batch 1 (clients/windows/ui-polish-plan.md, workstreams W0/A1/B/C/E):
- W0: the shell's duplicated trust/settings structs are gone — src/trust.rs
re-exports pf-client-core's, so the shell and the spawned session binary share
ONE Settings shape over client-windows-settings.json. Fixes real bugs: the
shell's saves no longer drop session-side fields; the stats-overlay toggle
(show_hud -> show_stats, serde alias migrates old files) and the forwarded-
controller pick now actually reach the spawned session. The "Streaming engine"
Settings combo is gone (PUNKTFUNK_BUILTIN_STREAM=1 stays as the dev A/B knob).
- Forwarded-controller pinning by stable key (vid:pid:name, pf-client-core's
format): persisted as forward_pad, applied by the shell's own service at
startup AND by the session binary in session_params (both OSes — the session
never applied the pin before).
- A1 single window: the shell hides itself when the spawned session window
presents its first frame ({"ready":true}) and restores + foregrounds on the
child's exit — exactly one visible Punktfunk window at any time. Restore runs
before the request-access cancel gate so a Ready/Cancel race can't strand the
shell hidden.
- C console UI: punktfunk-session --browse gains --json-status (ready when the
library window presents; error line on a failed start), and the shell
surfaces it — "Open console UI" on paired hosts' menus, plus a controller-
detected hint card targeting the most recent paired host (x64 only; aarch64
ships no skia ui feature). Browse spawns hide/restore the shell like streams.
- B responsive: minimum window size (420x360); the hosts header collapses to
icon-only buttons below 700 px; the session status card shrinks instead of
clipping (max_width); busy pages, help actions, licenses and long labels wrap.
- E polish: session exe gets the app icon (winresource + WM_SETICON via the new
pf-presenter win32.rs); both exes share an explicit AppUserModelID on
unpackaged runs (packaged identity wins) so the windows group as one taskbar
app across the visibility handoff; "Start streams fullscreen" toggle passes
--fullscreen (GTK parity); connects stamp KnownHost::last_used; the connect
target is stashed for every route so "Connecting to X" always names the host.

feat(clients): reachability-probed presence + shareable Decky host management
Add a bounded, trust-agnostic, mDNS-INDEPENDENT QUIC reachability probe and surface it everywhere saved-host presence is shown, so a host reached over a routed network (Tailscale/VPN/multicast-filtering LAN) no longer reads Offline just because it isn't advertising — the display-side companion to the 0.8.4 dial-first connect fix. Core: - punktfunk-core: NativeClient::probe (bounded handshake; a real host answers even on trust mismatch, a wrong/closed/TCP-only port fails) + punktfunk_probe C ABI (ABI_VERSION 3->4, header regenerated). - pf-client-core: trust::probe_reachable_many (parallel per-host sweep). Presence pips now read `advertising OR probed-reachable`, refreshed by a ~10-12s background sweep off the UI thread: - Linux (relm4): ui_hosts probed map + HostsMsg::Probed sweep. - Windows (windows-reactor): pf-probe worker -> HostsProps.probed. - Apple (SwiftUI): HostStore.refreshReachability, driven by HomeView + GamepadHomeView .task. - Android (Compose): nativeProbe JNI seam + periodic LaunchedEffect (LNP-gated), online dot added to the touch HostCard. - Decky already probes via --list-hosts --probe. Decky client: make the flatpak client's known-hosts store the single source of truth via new headless CLI modes (--list-hosts / --add-host / --set-host / --forget-host / --reset / --reachable). The plugin can now add a host by address, edit/forget hosts, reset all state (keeping the client identity), and shows probe-backed online pips — state is shared with the desktop client, not duplicated. Also lands in-progress Android 17 LNP groundwork (targetSdk 37 + ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK runtime flow, permission dialogs) that was already present in the working tree. Verified: cargo check + clippy clean (punktfunk-core, pf-client-core, linux, android native); android assembleDebug BUILD SUCCESSFUL; decky typecheck + rollup build clean; probe true/false-positive behaviour exercised against a live host. Windows and Apple were not compiled locally (no MSVC/Xcode on this Linux box). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> |

feat(clients/windows): port the Vulkan session client to Windows — session-always
The punktfunk-session Vulkan client (clients/linux-session, now clients/session) builds and runs on Windows; the WinUI shell spawns it for every stream. Verified live: 10-bit HEVC via Vulkan Video on both AMD (iGPU) and NVIDIA, 5120x1440 at 130 fps / 8 ms end-to-end on the RTX 4090. - pf-ffvk: Windows bindgen branch (FFMPEG_DIR + PF_FFVK_VULKAN_INCLUDE, no pkg-config); provisioning fetches Vulkan-Headers (pinned v1.4.309). - pf-client-core: builds on Windows — WASAPI audio (audio_wasapi.rs, cfg-swapped via #[path], same surface as the PipeWire twin), VAAPI/dmabuf gated inline (chain = vulkan -> software), trust reads the WinUI shell's %APPDATA% stores (parity tests pin both serialized shapes), Settings gains adapter/hdr_enabled (serde-defaulted; Linux stores unaffected). - pf-presenter: builds on Windows — dmabuf module Linux-gated; SDL keyboard grab while captured (Alt+Tab/Win reach the host); pick_device ranks discrete over integrated (device 0 was the iGPU on hybrid boxes — the silent footgun) and honors PUNKTFUNK_VK_ADAPTER (the Settings GPU pick, exported by the session). - run loop: block in one SDL wait woken by input AND decoded frames (a per- session forwarder pushes a FrameWake user event) instead of a 1 ms poll — measured 111%% -> 5%% of a core (NVIDIA), 86%% -> 3.5%% (AMD), stats unchanged. The pump's decode-fence wait became once-per-window sampling (no per-frame pipeline stall; the stat now shows true backlog). - pf-console-ui: builds on Windows (skia-safe msvc prebuilts); font lookup falls through fontconfig aliases to concrete DirectWrite families (Consolas/Segoe UI) — browse/coverflow works, verified against a live host. - WinUI shell: session-always via new src/spawn.rs (GTK spawn.rs port — CREATE_NO_WINDOW, stdout contract, kill handle); the Stream screen is a status card (chips + stage lines from the child's stats). The legacy in-process D3D11VA path stays behind Settings "Streaming engine" / PUNKTFUNK_BUILTIN_ STREAM=1 as the A/B baseline until Phase 8 deletes it. SessionParams.video_caps makes the HDR toggle real. - clients/linux-session renamed to clients/session (builds for both OSes). - CI/MSIX: both workflows build/test both bins with widened path filters; the MSIX ships punktfunk-session.exe. ARM64 session builds --no-default-features (rust-skia has no aarch64-pc-windows-msvc prebuilts; flip when it does). A/B on this box (5120x1440 HEVC vs home-worker-5): NVIDIA Vulkan 130 fps / 8 ms e2e / 1.6 ms decode — clearly better than the built-in path. The AMD iGPU VCN saturates at ~52 fps where its own D3D11VA does ~70 — Adrenalin Vulkan decode is slower on APU silicon; discrete RDNA validation gates Phase 8. refactor(client): extract UI-agnostic plumbing into pf-client-core (phase 0)
Session pump, FFmpeg decode, PipeWire audio, SDL3 gamepads, keymap, trust store, mDNS discovery, library client and Wake-on-LAN move verbatim from clients/linux into crates/pf-client-core, shared with the upcoming Vulkan session binary (punktfunk-planning: linux-client-rearchitecture.md). The GTK client re-exports them at the crate root so every existing crate::-path keeps resolving; its manifest drops the moved-only deps. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |
