PUNKTFUNK_MAX_FPS caps how fast the compositor lets the game render. It
deliberately does NOT touch the session: the client still negotiates and
receives its full rate, because the encode loop re-encodes the held frame
whenever the compositor produced no new one, and a repeat of an unchanged
picture is an almost-empty P-frame. So a 60-capped game on a 120 Hz session
still puts 120 frames a second on the wire — and the GPU time the game gives
up goes to capture and encode instead, which is the point (on a laptop or a
handheld, it goes to heat and battery too).
Capping the stream would be a different and mostly unwanted feature: it
hands the client fewer frames than it asked for and saves the game's GPU
nothing.
gamescope is the compositor that has the lever, so it is the one that gets
it: the rate becomes --nested-refresh, which is what gamescope clamps the
game to. All three sessions we own take it — the bare spawn's -r, the
managed gamescope-session-plus wrapper's PF_HZ, and the SteamOS PATH shim's.
In the managed path the limit lands on PF_HZ alone and NOT on
CUSTOM_REFRESH_RATES, so the mode the session advertises stays the client's
— that is what makes games see the real refresh rather than the box's EDID.
Two scoping notes. Under gamescope the cap is the nested output's rate, so
everything it composites moves at it, not the game alone; there is only the
one output. And the attach path (PUNKTFUNK_GAMESCOPE_NODE) mirrors a
gamescope we do not own, so it has no lever to pull and is untouched.

A box called `bazzite-htpc` had no way to present itself as "Living Room"
short of renaming the machine. The new knob overrides the name everywhere
a human sees it: the GameStream serverinfo <hostname> element and the
mDNS service instance name both adverts carry. Unset (the default) is the
machine's own hostname, exactly as before.
Free text is the point, so the DNS-level name is now a separate concern
from the display name. The instance label may contain spaces and accents;
an A-record target may not, and mdns-sd rejects the whole ServiceInfo if
the target is not a legal name — which would take discovery down rather
than merely look wrong. dns_label() sanitizes the target and passes an
already-legal name through byte-for-byte, so hosts without the override
advertise precisely what they always did. The display name loses `.` (it
would split the label, and clients derive the name as the first label of
the fullname, so "Ben's PC v1.2" would arrive as "Ben's PC v1") and is
capped at the 63-byte DNS-SD ceiling on a char boundary.

(cherry picked from commit bbf72261a12e0e67601f549d40db65ae61979268)
A user found this in their log and had never been offered a choice:
WARN GameStream/Moonlight compat ENABLED (--gamestream): its pairing runs over
plain HTTP and its legacy control encryption can reuse GCM nonces
(security-review #5/#9) — an on-path LAN attacker could MITM pairing or
recover input. Enable only on a TRUSTED network.
They were right. The `gamestream` task carried no `Flags: unchecked`, so it was
pre-ticked; and since a silent install takes the wizard's own task defaults
(1839d756), a winget install turned it on with no checkbox ever shown. The host
warns that this plane is a security downgrade on every single start, so having
the installer enable it by default cannot be squared with our own advice — least
of all on the path where nobody sees a wizard.
Now unchecked, matching `allowpublicfw`, the other task with a security
consequence. A default install therefore lands `PUNKTFUNK_HOST_CMD=serve`, the
native-only host; Punktfunk's own clients are unaffected, since the native
punktfunk/1 plane is always on. Unattended opt-in is `/MERGETASKS=gamestream`.
Scope, deliberately: this changes FRESH installs only. `GamestreamParam` already
omits the flag entirely unless `FreshHostInstall`, so no existing host has its
choice touched by an upgrade, and anyone relying on Moonlight today keeps it.
`DEFAULT_HOST_CMD` (the service's fallback when host.env carries no
PUNKTFUNK_HOST_CMD line at all) is deliberately NOT flipped here: the installer
always writes the line explicitly, so it does not affect a normal install, and
inverting it would silently disable Moonlight for anyone whose host.env lost that
line — a runtime regression that belongs in its own change, if at all.
Docs corrected everywhere they stated the old default, since three of them now
told users the opposite of what ships: the winget Agreement shown BEFORE install
(it said "enabled by default" and gave the opt-OUT override), the Windows
packaging README, and host.env.example. The `--override` example in the installer
manifest is inverted with it (`/MERGETASKS=gamestream` to add, `!` to remove).
Verified: [Tasks] + [Code] compile with ISCC 6.7.1 on the windows-amd64 runner
(all optional features defined), and the winget catalogue rebuilds and passes
29/29 with the edited manifests.
A fresh install left PunktfunkWeb registered but not running: `web setup` waited
only for the mgmt token before firing `schtasks /run`, while `web-run.cmd` also
requires the host identity cert — and the host writes the token during argument
parsing but `cert.pem` only after the pure-Rust RSA-2048 keygen inside `serve`.
The launcher lost that race, exited 1, and since the task carried no trigger but
boot (Task Scheduler does not reliably restart on a non-zero exit code) the
console stayed down until the next reboot, with the installer still reporting
"web console set up + started".
- `web setup` gates on cert.pem (written last) as well as the token, 90 s budget.
- After `schtasks /run`, poll for the :47992 listener and retry before giving up;
warn honestly instead of claiming a start that did not happen.
- `web-run.cmd` (installed + dev) waits in-process for the token + cert (~5 min)
rather than exiting 1 and hoping restart-on-failure retries.
- Register the task with a logon trigger alongside boot, falling back to the
boot-only XML if a Task Scheduler build rejects it.
- Linux had the same defect: punktfunk-web.service's Restart=on-failure gave up
permanently after systemd's default 5-starts-in-10 s limit. StartLimitIntervalSec=0.

The LocalService runner can't traverse the interactive user's profile the way
the old SYSTEM runner could — so a plugin can no longer read a file an app
running as *you* produced (the acute case: the Playnite exporter's library
JSON under %APPDATA%). Confirmed on-glass: as LocalService the glob finds
nothing and the profile is un-traversable.
Add the inverse of plugin-state: <config_dir>\ingest, granted BUILTIN\Users
Modify by plugins enable (disable reverts to inherited Users:RX). An
interactive-user app drops ingest\<plugin>\… and the de-privileged runner
reads it there — the one Users-writable carve-out in the otherwise
Users-read-only tree. SDK exports pluginIngestDir(name) to resolve it; on
Linux the systemd --user runner owns the config dir so same-user producers
write there with no grant.
Accepted tradeoff: the inbox is writable by any local user (trusted-single-
user model; it feeds only a LocalService runner). Consumers must treat ingest
data as lower trust than their own state.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The LocalService runner cannot write anywhere under %ProgramData%\punktfunk
(the config dir is Users-read-only), so a state-writing plugin's saveCache /
config-edit / first-run mkdir all fail EPERM — proven on-glass (rom-manager
only looked fine because its state dir was pre-created by an admin run and a
0-title reconcile skipped the write).
Add the one writable grant the model was missing, keeping the split crisp —
code dirs RX+WA, secrets R, and now a dedicated state root RW:
- plugins enable / build-scripting.ps1: create %ProgramData%\punktfunk plugin-state and grant LocalService (OI)(CI)(M); disable revokes. Users stay
read-only, so another non-admin still can't tamper with a plugin's launch
templates.
- SDK: export pluginStateDir(name) -> <config_dir>/plugin-state/<name>. Same
path on Linux (the systemd --user runner owns the config dir, writable with
no grant), so plugins use one branch-free helper.
Plugins must persist under pluginStateDir(), not straight under the config dir.

The PunktfunkScripting scheduled task ran operator-installed plugin code
as SYSTEM with -RunLevel Highest — any plugin defect was a full
compromise of the box. The principal is now NT AUTHORITY\LocalService
(minimal privileges, no password to manage, exists at boot, loopback
networking works), registered without RunLevel:
- installer: New-ScheduledTaskPrincipal -UserId 'LocalService'
- plugins enable: converges the principal idempotently (migrating tasks
an older installer or a dev box registered as SYSTEM) BEFORE starting,
then grants LocalService read — via icacls, full-System32-path — on
exactly the two SYSTEM/Admins-DACL'd files the runner's connect()
needs: the scoped plugin-token and the TLS-pin cert.pem. Never
mgmt-token. plugins disable revokes the grants; plugins status now
prints the task principal so the migration is verifiable.
- build-scripting.ps1 mirrors the convergence + grants on dev deploys.
The usage text also mentions the new --allow-public-registry gate that
lands with the supply-chain commit.

`punktfunk-host plugins add/remove/list` forward to the bun runner, which on
Windows is resolved relative to the running exe (<exe-dir>\bun\bun.exe +
<exe-dir>\scripting\runner-cli.js). Only the installer ever laid that payload
down, so on a deploy-host.ps1 dev box — where the service runs out of
target\release — both paths are absent and the CLI bails with "the plugin
runner isn't installed". deploy-all.ps1 was host + web console only.
Add build-scripting.ps1: it mirrors CI (bun install --frozen-lockfile
--ignore-scripts + bun build src/runner-cli.ts --target=bun, gated on the same
`attempt=` sentinel that proves the dynamic plugin import stayed a runtime
import), then lays the bundle + scripting-run.cmd + the shared bun next to every
host exe it finds — the built one and whatever the PunktfunkHost service runs —
so it is correct on a dev checkout or an installed {app}. It stops a running
PunktfunkScripting first (a live runner holds bun.exe open) and does not
silently enable the opt-in task (-EnableTask to do so).
deploy-all.ps1 is now host -> web console -> runner, always, so the host binary
and the runner bundle never drift apart.

Ship the management web console and the plugin/script runner across the packaging
matrix, and fix a Linux tray startup crash.
- nix: add punktfunk-web (Nitro SSR on bun) and punktfunk-scripting (Effect runner),
with services.punktfunk.{web,scripting} modules. Both bun node_modules come from
fixed-output derivations pinned to real deps hashes; patchShebangs the web
node_modules so orval/paraglide/vite run in the sandbox. Validated on x86_64-linux
(nix build .#punktfunk-{web,scripting,tray,host} all green).
- punktfunk-scripting now ships for deb/rpm/arch/nix/windows, mirroring the web-console
mechanics (vendored bun on deb/rpm/arch, pkgs.bun on nix; one self-contained
`bun build --target=bun` bundle). Opt-in: host Recommends it, but the systemd --user
unit ships un-started (Windows registers its scheduled task disabled).
- fix(tray): build punktfunk-tray in its OWN cargo invocation on nix/rpm/arch. Cargo
unifies features across one `cargo build`, so co-building the tray with the host pulls
the host's ashpd->zbus/tokio onto the tray's shared zbus and it panics at startup
("there is no reactor running, must be called from the context of a Tokio 1.x
runtime"). Isolated, the tray's zbus stays on async-io. The .deb already did this;
runtime-verified on nix.

The punktfunk-web unit serves HTTP/1.1 over TLS with the host's own
self-signed identity cert, but several guides still told users to open
http://<host>:47992, which fails. Correct the scheme everywhere and note
the one-time browser cert warning in the canonical + SteamOS docs.
The RPM %post web hint was doubly wrong (http://<host-ip>:3000): wrong
scheme and wrong port — the service listens on :47992, not the :3000 dev
default. Also fixes scripts/web-init.sh, so the URL the SteamOS/Linux
installer prints at the end of setup is correct too.

Six parallel audits swept the root docs, docs-site, every per-directory
README, and the packaging docs; every claim below was verified against
the source before editing.
- README: Layout gains the six missing crates (pf-client-core,
pf-presenter, pf-console-ui, pf-ffvk, pf-driver-proto, punktfunk-tray),
clients/session, api/ and ci/; Linux/Windows client rows reflect the
shell + Vulkan-session split and the Vulkan Video -> VAAPI/D3D11VA ->
software decode chains; the "every client over a C ABI" claim is
corrected (Rust clients link the core directly); tiered stats overlay
+ console shell noted; Apple row mentions AV1.
- CONTRIBUTING: drop the dead CLAUDE.md link (deliberately untracked);
point at the README's build/invariants sections. SECURITY: 0.9.0.
- host-cli/pairing: --allow-pairing/--require-pairing are no-op legacy
names — pairing is required by default, --allow-tofu is the real flag;
document --data-port and --idle-timeout-ms.
- configuration: document PUNKTFUNK_RECOVER_SESSION_CMD (session-crash
recovery hook), PUNKTFUNK_MDNS, PUNKTFUNK_DATA_PORT.
- virtual-displays/gnome: GNOME per-client scaling shipped (host-
persisted) — flip the ❌ to ✅ and describe how it works.
- stats: new "Detail levels" section (Off/Compact/Normal/Detailed +
per-platform cycle gestures); retire the GTK hand-off note.
- clients/install-client/status/roadmap: decode chains, Windows client
validation narrowed to HDR-only pending, adaptive bitrate, console
shell, Apple AV1, Windows host vendor list.
- Sub-READMEs: clients/linux rewritten for the re-architecture; session
Windows decode rung + d3d11va knob; Windows tiered overlay; Android
minSdk 28; decky file table; host zerocopy/ path; scripts port
47992 and steamos-host.md; pf-dualsense source path.
- packaging: canary version bases are tag-derived (<next-minor> via
pf-version.sh/.ps1), codecs-extra not ffmpeg-full, document the
pinned offline-Skia tarball + SKIA_BINARIES_URL and vulkan-headers.
- Convert 15 dangling design/*.md links to the punktfunk-planning
prose convention (those docs live in the private planning repo).

deploy-all.ps1 chains deploy-host.ps1 + build-web.ps1 so a full redeploy is
one command; stops before the web step if the host build/start fails.
build-web.ps1's post-restart check was probing http:// while web-run.cmd
serves HTTPS-only, so it always reported a false failure - probe https via
curl.exe (no -SkipCertificateCheck on the Windows PowerShell 5.1 this runs
under) with a short retry loop for the task's cold start instead.
Remediates the two web-console residuals from the 2026-07-05 posture audit:
- Brute-force throttle (loginThrottle.ts): per-IP exponential backoff
after 5 free attempts, plus a global floor for spread-out floods, keyed
on the socket peer IP (not spoofable X-Forwarded-For) with a size-capped
map. The constant-time compare already stopped the timing leak; this
bounds guess *volume* against a by-design LAN-exposed console.
- Session seal key now derives from the high-entropy mgmt token instead of
the low-entropy login password, so a captured cookie is no longer an
offline password oracle. Falls back to the password only when no token
is configured (dev/local). Rotating the token now invalidates sessions.
- Replace the process-wide NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED=0 with per-request
Bun TLS scoped to the loopback proxy hop; a non-loopback mgmt URL now
verifies normally. Dropped the env var from the systemd unit, Steam Deck
installer, Windows run scripts, env examples, and web README.

Five verified findings from the IDD-push/pf-vdisplay deep audit:
- Keyed-mutex acquire (BOTH endpoints): AcquireSync returns WAIT_TIMEOUT
(0x102) / WAIT_ABANDONED (0x80) as SUCCESS-severity HRESULTs, which the
windows-rs Result wrapper erases — a busy slot read as "acquired", so
driver and host could race the same ring texture (torn frames) and the
designed busy-skip backpressure was dead code. Both sides now classify
the raw vtable HRESULT; WAIT_ABANDONED counts as acquired (ownership
transfers — refusing it would wedge the slot forever).
- Host SDR hot path leaked one ID3D11VideoProcessorInputView per converted
frame: the D3D11_VIDEO_PROCESSOR_STREAM ManuallyDrop field suppressed the
release after VideoProcessorBlt. Released by hand now, success or not.
- Driver leaked IddCx's per-acquire surface reference (from_raw_borrowed on
a TRANSFERRED reference — the MS sample Attach/Reset's it): the swap-chain
surface set survived swap-chain destruction, the likely true root cause of
the ~50 MB-per-reconnect VRAM loss that device pooling only mitigated.
Now adopted via from_raw (publisher or not) and dropped pre-Finished.
- PUNKTFUNK_IDD_PUSH removed: capture is unconditionally IDD-push, but the
vdisplay manager still gated the lingering-monitor preempt (and render
pin) on the knob, whose default was OFF — dev/CLI runs reused a lingering
monitor whose IddCx swap-chain is dead (black reconnect). The preempt and
the render-GPU pin are now unconditional; host.env comments no longer
promise the removed DDA/WGC fallback.
- Driver D3D device: dropped D3D11_CREATE_DEVICE_SINGLETHREADED (unsound
since DEVICE_POOL shares one device across processors) and the pooled
immediate context is now SetMultithreadProtected — two concurrent
monitors' workers otherwise race an unlocked context (UB in the UMD).
No wire-contract change (pf-driver-proto untouched); the driver fixes take
effect on the next pf-vdisplay redeploy.

Two comment em-dashes I added tripped the installer-run ASCII guard (PS 5.1
mis-parses non-ASCII on non-UTF-8 locales).

The dev deploy built --features nvenc only, so a web-console GPU preference
pointing at an AMD/Intel adapter made every session die at encoder open
(NV_ENC_ERR_NO_ENCODE_DEVICE) — the exact "can't connect" just hit on the RTX
box's Ryzen iGPU. The script now enables amf-qsv when FFMPEG_DIR (machine env,
process env, or C:\Users\Public\ffmpeg) has a dev tree, and copies the FFmpeg
runtime DLLs next to the exe after a successful build.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The nvenc build linked nvEncodeAPI64.dll's entry points at load time, so a
--features nvenc binary hard-crashed on any box without the NVIDIA driver
(AMD/Intel). Entry points now come from a runtime LoadLibrary table
(encode/windows/nvenc.rs load_api); a missing DLL just falls through the
encoder auto-detect to AMF/QSV/software. The generated import lib and all its
plumbing (gen-nvenc-importlib.ps1, nvenc.def, PUNKTFUNK_NVENC_LIB_DIR,
setup-build-env wiring) are gone.
Live-validated on the RTX 4090 box (NVENC session, 7000+ frames).

Port 3000 collides with half the dev-server ecosystem; 47992 sits next
to the mgmt API (47990) in the punktfunk port family. Updates the run
scripts, systemd/scheduled-task units, Dockerfile, Windows firewall
rule + installer, packaging, and every doc that referenced :3000.

- Modern branded wizard: WizardStyle=modern dynamic windows11 (Inno >= 6.6,
plain-modern fallback for older compilers; CI provisioning upgrades a
pre-6.6 Inno). Brand-mark wizard side panels + header tiles (100-200% DPI)
and a multi-size punktfunk.ico (SetupIconFile + Apps & Features), generated
AND committed by branding/gen-branding.ps1 from the canonical brand geometry.
Gotcha encoded in the script: ISCC rejects all-PNG icons, so entries <= 64px
are classic DIBs (PNG only at 128/256), and the ICO is load-verified.
- VB-CABLE actually ships now: windows-host.yml never set VBCABLE_DIR, so every
published installer silently omitted the virtual mic (broken mic passthrough
in the field). CI provisions the pinned, SHA-256-verified official Pack45
(provision-windows-punktfunk-extras.ps1) and the pack now FAILS on a
supplied-but-invalid dir instead of shipping mic-less again. Attribution per
VB-Audio's bundling grant surfaced in the visible wizard task text (vendor,
vb-cable.com, donationware) on top of the licenses notice.
- GameStream (Moonlight) compat is a wizard task (checked by default) ->
service install --gamestream=on|off writes PUNKTFUNK_HOST_CMD=
serve[ --gamestream] into host.env. Only the two canonical values are ever
rewritten - a hand-customized command line survives upgrades. Silent
installs: /MERGETASKS="!gamestream".
- Driver uninstall (field report: our virtual-device drivers survived
uninstall): new `driver uninstall [--gamepad]` removes the pf-vdisplay
device node(s) + the pf-vdisplay/pf-dualsense/pf-xusb driver-store packages,
wired into [UninstallRun] after service uninstall. Locale-safe by
construction: devices matched on unlocalized VALUES (never pnputil's
localized labels), packages found by INF content scan - validated against a
German-locale box ("Instanz-ID:" parse; 7/7 punktfunk INFs matched, no
foreign hits). VB-CABLE is deliberately left installed (shared third-party
component with its own uninstaller).
Installer compile, cargo check/clippy/fmt, and the ASCII locale gate are green;
the wizard look + uninstall flow still need one on-glass pass on a disposable
box (this box runs the live host).

Adds a client-selectable **preferred codec** and wires the core + ABI + probe + Linux client to
negotiate and decode it. (Windows/Apple/Android follow in 2b.)
**Core:**
- `Hello.preferred_codec` (a single CODEC_* bit, 0 = auto) — a soft hint appended after
`video_codecs`. `resolve_codec(client, host, preferred)` now honors the preference when the host
can also emit it, else falls back to precedence (HEVC > AV1 > H.264). Roundtrip + preference tests.
- `NativeClient::connect` takes `video_codecs` + `preferred_codec`; `NativeClient.codec` exposes the
resolved `Welcome.codec`.
- ABI: `punktfunk_connect_ex7` (adds the two codec params; `ex6` delegates to it advertising
HEVC-only) + `punktfunk_connection_codec` getter + `PUNKTFUNK_CODEC_{H264,HEVC,AV1}` constants
(drift-guarded against the wire values). Header regenerated.
**Host:** passes `hello.preferred_codec` into `resolve_codec`.
**probe:** `--codec h264|hevc|av1|auto` sets the preference (still advertises it can decode all
three); the dump extension already follows the resolved codec.
**Linux client:** advertises the codecs FFmpeg can actually decode (`decodable_codecs()`), threads
the user's `codec` setting as the preference, and builds the decoder — both the software and VAAPI
paths, plus the mid-session VAAPI→software demotion — from the negotiated `Welcome.codec` instead of
hardcoding HEVC. New "Video codec" dropdown in Preferences (Automatic/HEVC/H.264/AV1).
Live-validated on the dev box: probe `--codec hevc` against a software (H.264-only) host resolves to
H.264 (graceful soft-preference fallback), no failure. clippy + core (57) + host (133) tests green.

Web console
- Pairing/Library/Stats refactored into self-contained subsections that each own
their own queries + mutations; a shared slot-based layout (view.tsx) is filled by
the live page (containers) and Storybook (pure cards + fixtures) so the layout can't
drift.
- All paired devices in one list on Pairing with a protocol column (punktfunk/1 +
Moonlight), routing each unpair to the right endpoint; the redundant Clients page is
removed.
- Library: overview grid split from the add/edit form into separate files.
- Login screen links out to the docs.
Docs
- "Console login password" section on every host page (apt/RPM/Bazzite/SteamOS/Windows)
plus a new "Forgot your Password?" troubleshooting page, linked from the login screen.
- Console served as HTTP/1.1 over TLS (drop the unusable HTTP/3 advertising) across the
Bun entry, launchers, systemd units, and packaging.
Tooling
- Biome now respects .gitignore (stops linting generated code), config migrated to
2.5.1; all lint issues fixed cleanly.
Also includes this branch's in-progress host, Apple client, packaging, and CI changes.

Port the three install-time PowerShell *files* (install-pf-vdisplay.ps1,
install-gamepad-drivers.ps1, web-setup.ps1) into punktfunk-host.exe subcommands:
`driver install [--gamepad] --dir <stage>` and `web setup --app-dir <app>
[--password-file <f>]` (windows/install.rs).
Why: PowerShell 5.1 reads a BOM-less .ps1 FILE in the machine ANSI codepage, so a
stray non-ASCII byte mis-decodes and aborts on a non-English box - exactly how the
pf-vdisplay driver install silently failed. A compiled subcommand drives the same
external tools (certutil/pnputil/nefconc/schtasks/netsh/icacls) as fixed string
literals, with no file-codepage surface. (The .iss's INLINE -Command PowerShell is a
command-line string, not a file read, so it's unaffected and stays.)
- windows/install.rs: faithful port - cert trust, gated nefconc node create + pnputil
for pf-vdisplay; pnputil per-inf for gamepads; web-password ACL, the PunktfunkWeb task
(generated UTF-16 XML), firewall rule, start. Best-effort (a hiccup warns, never aborts).
- punktfunk-host.iss [Run]: call the exe instead of `powershell -File`; drop the
web-setup.ps1 staging + WebSetup define; WebSetupParams emits --app-dir/--password-file.
- pack-host-installer.ps1: stop copying the three install scripts into the stages.
- delete the three .ps1 files.
The `mod install;` + dispatch arms in main.rs landed in the preceding docs commit
(swept up by a concurrent commit); this commit adds the module + installer wiring.
CI-compile-validated via windows-host; the install path is on-glass-validated on the
next canary install (the test box is offline).

Now that the drivers build from source in CI, remove the dead checked-in binaries and
the toolchain cruft they left behind:
- Delete packaging/windows/{pf-vdisplay,gamepad-drivers}/ (the prebuilt .dll/.inf/.cat/.cer).
pack-host-installer.ps1 builds + signs all three drivers from the drivers/ workspace and
nothing reads the vendored dirs anymore; stage-pf-vdisplay.ps1's -VendorDir is now a
mandatory build-output path, not a vendored default.
- Drop the LLVM-21 pin. The vendored bindgen 0.71->0.72 bump (the shipping pack already
builds green on the runner-default clang 22) retired the bindgen-0.71 layout-test overflow
that needed LLVM 21.1.2, so windows-drivers.yml + provision-windows-wdk.ps1 no longer
install/point at C:\llvm-21 (~898 MB off a fresh provision) - both driver builds now use one
toolchain (clang 22 + bindgen 0.72).
- pack -SkipBuild on the gamepad build (build-pf-vdisplay.ps1 already builds the whole
workspace), build-web.ps1 reaps a stale node too, deploy-dev.ps1 nefconc path + comments.
- Reword the vendored-driver references (build scripts, .iss, READMEs, the vite web-bundle
comment) to the build-from-source reality.

The pf-vdisplay virtual-display driver shipped as a checked-in PREBUILT binary
that went stale - two field failures on a fresh install (live-repro'd on a
German-locale Dell laptop):
* Bug A (every box): a repo-wide rename edited the vendored pf_vdisplay.inf
but never re-signed pf_vdisplay.cat, so the catalog stopped covering the INF
-> `pnputil /add-driver` fails SPAPI_E_FILE_HASH_NOT_IN_CATALOG -> driver
never installs -> every session dies "pf-vdisplay driver interface not

* the prebuilt binary also predated IOCTL_SET_RENDER_ADAPTER (added to the
driver source after the vendor freeze) that the host needs to pin the IDD
render GPU on hybrid/Optimus boxes.
Fix: build the driver FROM SOURCE every release (build-pf-vdisplay.ps1, wired
into pack-host-installer.ps1) so .dll/.inf/.cat are always in lockstep and
current driver features ship. The runner's clang 22 made the driver's pinned
bindgen 0.71 emit opaque structs (157 layout-assert errors), so bump the
vendored wdk-sys/wdk-build bindgen 0.71 -> 0.72 (+ lock). The build self-signs
the driver per build (installer trusts the bundled .cer); a stable
DRIVER_CERT_PFX_B64 secret can override.
* Bug B (non-English boxes): the installer runs install-pf-vdisplay.ps1 etc.
via powershell.exe (5.1), which reads a BOM-less script in the ANSI codepage
- an em-dash's trailing 0x94 byte becomes a curly quote on German
Windows-1252 and the script aborts "unterminated string", so the driver
never installed (the gamepad script survived only because it was already
ASCII). Scrub every installer-run .ps1/.cmd to ASCII + add a CI gate that
fails on any non-ASCII so it can't regress.
* Bug C (upgrades): nothing stopped the OLD web console before re-registering
its task, so a stale server kept :3000 (the new one restart-looped on
EADDRINUSE) and served a broken old bundle (500 on /login). Stop + reap it
(runtime-agnostic, by the :3000 listener owner) in web-setup.ps1 and in the
.iss before the file copy + on uninstall.

Goal 2 ("drop every trace of SudoVDA") is done. The SudoVDA driver is no longer
shipped (only pf-vdisplay; the old vdisplay-driver tree was deleted in 416862a),
and F1 (d5c6b7e/03da47b) already moved the display-utility helpers out of the
backend into neutral modules (win_adapter/win_display), breaking the reach-in.
So the backend is now cleanly removable:
- Deleted crates/punktfunk-host/src/vdisplay/windows/sudovda.rs (350 lines: the
SudoVdaDisplay VirtualDisplay impl + its VdisplayDriver/probe).
- vdisplay::open()/probe() are now unconditional pf-vdisplay; deleted the
windows_use_pf_vdisplay() backend selector. open() now ensure!s
pf_vdisplay::is_available() with a clear "driver not installed" error instead
of the old silent SudoVDA fallback (no fallback driver exists anymore).
- Scrubbed the dangling references to the deleted symbols (manager/sendinput/dxgi
comments, the config + host.env PUNKTFUNK_VDISPLAY docs); the var stays as an
informational forward-seam. Updated the F1 module docs (Goal 2 now done).
All changes are #[cfg(windows)] except the config doc; Linux clippy
-p punktfunk-host -D warnings clean; zero `sudovda::`/`SudoVdaDisplay` code refs
remain (comments only). Windows build is CI-gated.
Scorecard Goal 2 -> DONE; recorded the E1 "do NOT do it" stability decision in
windows-host-rewrite.md §4 (the process-global driver design is sound given
ProcessSharingDisabled; a device-owned variant adds a use-after-free window for
no gain).

Make the validated IDD-push zero-copy path the default for a fresh install,
without penalising dev / non-pf-driver runs:
- The shipped default config now enables it. Both seed sites set
`PUNKTFUNK_VDISPLAY=pf` + `PUNKTFUNK_IDD_PUSH=1`: the hardcoded default the
service writes on `service install` (`ensure_default_host_env`) AND the
`host.env.example` template the installer bundles. A fresh install therefore
runs the validated path (the installer also bundles the pf-vdisplay driver);
it falls back to DDA if the driver can't attach.
- `idd_push` is now **value-aware** instead of a bare presence flag, so an
operator can turn it OFF with `PUNKTFUNK_IDD_PUSH=0` in host.env — a `var_os`
presence check read `=0` as "on". Unset still ⇒ off (the code default is
unchanged, so existing host.env files and dev/CI runs are unaffected; only the
shipped default config opts in).
Also scrubbed the stale "SudoVDA" wording in host.env.example. Linux cargo
clippy -p punktfunk-host -D warnings clean; the service.rs default string is
Windows-only (CI-gated).

The Windows installer ballooned to 154 MB and installed forever because the node-server
bundle externalized the WHOLE @unom/ui dependency tree (payload, lexical, date-fns,
prismjs…) to .output/server/node_modules — 47,567 files / 730 MB copied into Program
Files. Set Nitro `noExternals: true` so every dependency is bundled + tree-shaken into the
server output: .output drops to ~75 files / 10 MB, and the bare external imports
(srvx, seroval…) bun couldn't resolve at runtime are gone — so the console runs on bun
(no node, no node_modules), which is the issue we previously worked around with node.
Windows installer now ships bun.exe + the ~75-file .output (was node.exe + a node_modules
forest) and runs `bun .output\server\index.mjs`:
- windows-host.yml: fetch a pinned portable bun (build tool AND shipped runtime); drop the
node fetch + the .output/server install; smoke-boot under the bundled bun.
- pack-host-installer.ps1 / punktfunk-host.iss: -NodeExe -> -BunExe; stage {app}\bun\bun.exe.
- web-run.cmd / build-web.ps1: run/restart on bun; docs updated.
Net win everywhere: the Linux .deb shrinks (node still runs the self-contained output), and
the docker web image — which already ran `bun run .output/server/index.mjs` with only
.output copied — is fixed (the externals had no node_modules to resolve at runtime).
Validated locally: noExternals build = 75 files / 10 MB; node AND bun both serve /login
(200) + static assets (200) + gate /api (401).
(A true single binary via `bun build --compile` is blocked for now: Nitro serves public
assets from an import.meta-relative path `--compile` doesn't embed (/$bunfs/public); the
75-file payload is the clean result.)

The Windows host installer shipped only the host exe + SudoVDA driver + FFmpeg, so a
fresh install had no web management console — required for basically every user (status,
paired devices, the PIN pairing flow). The console was only ever set up by hand on the
dev box (build-web.ps1 + a hand-made PunktfunkWeb task whose web-run.cmd wasn't even
committed). Bundle it into the same installer, mirroring the proven Linux punktfunk-web
deploy.
- windows-host.yml builds the Nitro node-server console (bun, deb.yml's shape) + fetches
a pinned portable Node, smoke-boots it under node (/login == 200) to gate the build, and
hands web/.output + node.exe to the pack script.
- pack-host-installer.ps1 gains -WebDir/-NodeExe and stages the .output tree, node, and
the two new scripts into the non-WOW64-redirected build area.
- punktfunk-host.iss lays the payload into {app}\web\.output + {app}\node\node.exe, adds
a wizard page for the console login password pre-filled with a crypto-random default
(shown on the finish page; kept on upgrade), and runs web-setup.ps1.
- web-setup.ps1 writes the ACL'd %ProgramData%\punktfunk\web-password (Administrators +
SYSTEM), registers the PunktfunkWeb scheduled task (boot, SYSTEM, restart-on-failure ->
web-run.cmd -> node on :3000), opens inbound TCP 3000, and starts it. web-run.cmd
sources the host's mgmt-token + the password and runs the bundled node.
- The console proxies the host's loopback mgmt API with the host's own
%ProgramData%\punktfunk\mgmt-token (no host-code change). Uninstall removes the task +
firewall rule.
Validated locally: bun build -> node-server bundle, node boot serves /login (200) and
gates /api (401). The Windows-only bits (ISCC compile, scheduled task, password page,
firewall) validate on the Windows runner CI + on-glass.

Reads PUNKTFUNK_NVENC_LIB_DIR/LIBCLANG_PATH/CMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM directly from
Machine scope into the process, so the build is correct even when the SSH/parent shell
predates setup-build-env.ps1 (env is inherited at spawn).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.8 <noreply@anthropic.com>
scripts/windows/: setup-build-env.ps1 persists the NVENC build env (Machine scope:
PUNKTFUNK_NVENC_LIB_DIR, LIBCLANG_PATH, CMAKE_POLICY_VERSION_MINIMUM -- no FFMPEG_DIR, the
nvenc build doesn't link libavcodec). deploy-host.ps1 rebuilds --release --features nvenc and
restarts the PunktfunkHost service with .bak rollback on build/start failure. build-web.ps1
rebuilds the Nitro web console (bun build, node runtime) and restarts the PunktfunkWeb task.
README documents the flow -- a redeploy is now a single script call.

The Windows host was NVIDIA-only (NVENC) with an openh264 software fallback. Add
AMD AMF and Intel QSV via libavcodec — the Windows analogue of the Linux VAAPI
backend — so one installer serves all three GPU vendors.
- encode/ffmpeg_win.rs: new WinVendor{Amf,Qsv} encoder. System-memory NV12/P010
readback (default, robust) + opt-in zero-copy D3D11 (PUNKTFUNK_ZEROCOPY: shares
the capturer's ID3D11Device; AMF takes AV_PIX_FMT_D3D11, QSV derives a QSV frames
ctx and maps) with a system fallback for the format-group mismatch the capturer's
video-processor fallback can produce. HDR Main10 (P010 + BT.2020/PQ VUI; an
Rgb10a2->P010 swscale covers the shader fallback).
- encode.rs: Codec::amf_name/qsv_name; open_video + windows_resolved_backend()
resolve PUNKTFUNK_ENCODER=auto|nvenc|amf|qsv|sw via a DXGI adapter VendorId probe.
- capture/dxgi.rs: gpu_mode mirrors the resolved backend (D3D11 NV12/P010 for AMF/QSV).
- gamestream/serverinfo.rs: GPU-aware codec advertisement (windows_codec_support;
AV1 gated to RDNA3+/Arc, like the VAAPI path).
- Cargo.toml: amf-qsv feature (optional ffmpeg-next in the windows target block).
- CI/installer: windows-host.yml sets FFMPEG_DIR + builds --features nvenc,amf-qsv;
the Inno installer bundles the FFmpeg DLLs; host.env default nvenc -> auto.
CI-green target; AMF/QSV not yet on-glass validated (no AMD/Intel Windows box in the
lab) — NVENC stays live-validated. An adversarial-review pass caught + fixed real
FFI bugs (AV_PIX_FMT_P010 is a macro -> P010LE; windows-rs 0.62 GetImmediateContext/
GetDesc1 return Result; AV_HWFRAME_MAP_* is a bindgen enum with no BitOr).

Follows the security audit (#5/#9): the GameStream-compat plane carries inherent on-path weaknesses
that can't be fixed on the wire without breaking stock Moonlight — its pairing runs over plain HTTP
(#9, MITM-able during the pairing window) and its legacy control encryption can reuse GCM nonces (#5,
a passive eavesdropper can recover/forge input). The native punktfunk/1 plane (SPAKE2 PIN pairing +
per-direction AEAD nonces) has neither. So flip the default to secure-by-default:
- `serve` → native punktfunk/1 plane + management API ONLY (no GameStream surface).
- `serve --gamestream` → ALSO the GameStream/Moonlight-compat planes (nvhttp pairing, RTSP, ENet
control, _nvstream mDNS). Opt-in, logged with a trusted-LAN caveat. `--moonlight` is an alias.
- The native plane is now ALWAYS on in `serve` (`--native` is a kept-for-compat no-op); the unified
GameStream+native host is `serve --gamestream`.
`gamestream::serve` gates the GameStream spawns (nvhttp/rtsp/control/mdns) on the flag; the native
plane + mgmt + native-pairing handle always run.
To avoid silently regressing validated Moonlight deployments, the explicit deployment configs PRESERVE
Moonlight via `--gamestream` (each documents dropping it for a secure native-only host): the Linux
systemd unit, the Steam Deck installer, and the Windows service default (DEFAULT_HOST_CMD). The bare
`serve` default (new/manual use) is secure.
Docs swept to match (host-cli, moonlight, quickstart, install, packaging READMEs, CLAUDE.md, README,
…): Moonlight setup now instructs `--gamestream`; native/console refs use bare `serve`. OpenAPI
regenerated (a stale "run `serve --native`" string). fmt + clippy clean; 94 host tests green.

Final cleanup after the DDA-parity work, plus an end-user service to replace the
PsExec/VBS/scheduled-task launch chain.
Cleanup (behavior-preserving):
- sudovda.rs: drop the dead legacy GDI isolate_displays/restore_displays (CCD is
the sole isolation path), the always-empty Monitor.isolated field, and the
vestigial reassert_isolation + PUNKTFUNK_ISOLATE_DISPLAYS knob; fix stale comments.
- dxgi.rs: downgrade leftover debug warns/infos (DuplicateOutput1 retry, FALLBACKS,
hook-hits, AcquireNextFrame idle timeout) to debug!; remove the PUNKTFUNK_NO_CURSOR
per-frame test knob.
Windows service (src/service.rs, `punktfunk-host service`):
- SCM supervisor (windows-service crate) that duplicates its LocalSystem token,
retargets it to the active console session, and CreateProcessAsUserW's the host
there (Sunshine/Apollo model) — relaunching on exit and console session switch,
inside a kill-on-close job object so a service crash never orphans the host.
- install/uninstall/start/stop/status subcommands: one elevated `service install`
registers an auto-start LocalSystem service + firewall rules + a default host.env.
- Config moves to %ProgramData%\punktfunk\host.env; config_dir() now resolves to
%ProgramData%\punktfunk on Windows (replacing the APPDATA=C:\Users\Public hack),
with a PUNKTFUNK_CONFIG_DIR override. Logs land in %ProgramData%\punktfunk\logs\.
- merged_env_block (shared with the WGC helper) now also carries RUST_LOG.
- docs/windows-service.md + scripts/windows/host.env.example; windows-host.md updated.
