enricobuehler 44692a0dc1 feat(host, client): the host tells the client when it stopped the stream itself
A Windows exclusive-topology eviction makes the host rebuild its capture
ring and encoder in place. It takes a few hundred milliseconds and is
entirely host-local: no packet is lost, the link never changes. But the
client's bitrate controller decides on 750 ms report windows, and a window
straddling that rebuild sees almost no stream. The 0.29 field log: 401 ms
of rebuild produced a window reporting actual_kbps=390 against a 20 000
target with loss_ppm=0, which the controller read as congestion — x0.7 and
slow start retired, three minutes at ~15 Mbps on a link that never dropped
a packet.

The client already knows how to throw a window away. `discard_abr_window`
feeds the controller nothing, sends no LossReport (so a bogus window cannot
spike the host's adaptive FEC) and closes the standing-latency detector as
not-loss-free. It had exactly one cause: the tail of the client's own speed
test. This adds the second, and it is the one party that actually knows —
the host.

`PipelineGap` (0x0A, host->client, 9 bytes) carries the rebuild's measured
span. A DURATION, never an instant: host and client clocks are not in the
same domain — 14.7 s apart in that same log — so an instant would need
skew-correcting before it meant anything. The client anchors the gap to its
own receive time and gap_ms is evidence for the log rather than an input to
arithmetic. The span is read from the transition trace's own total, so the
number the client logs is the total_ms on the host's trace line: one number,
checkable from either end of a field report.

Announced on both in-place rebuild paths, including the mode switch. The
mode switch is NOT already covered by the client's `on_mode_switch` reset:
that clears the learned caps, the three latency baselines and the proven
mark, which does mute OWD/decode/encode for a few windows — but it touches
neither `current_kbps`, `probing` nor `bad_windows`, and every signal that
needs no baseline (an unrecoverable frame, a flush, heavy loss over a
near-empty denominator, a keyframe-ask storm) still scores the straddling
window, where one severe verdict costs the same x0.7 plus slow start.

Deliberate limitation: only the window in flight is discarded. A rebuild
long enough to straddle a window boundary damaged the previous window too,
and that one is already decided. Retracting it would mean holding every
window back by a window in case a gap follows — trading a rare
over-reaction for a permanent one.

Additive: no ABI bump, no wire break. 0x0A extends the contiguous
0x01-0x09 rate-control block its only consumer already lives in, and is not
in the 0x30 clock block precisely because no clock domain is involved. A
client that predates it hits its "unknown control message" arm and keeps
today's behaviour; a host that predates it never sends one.

Tests: wire round trip including cross-decode against the three
identically-shaped rate-control messages either side of it (the type byte
is the only thing keeping a gap from re-decoding as a SetBitrate), and an
end-to-end pump test driving a real ControlTask over a real QUIC control
stream into a real DataPump, asserting the straddling window produces no
request and the next one reports normally. 464 core tests green, fmt and
clippy clean.

Not verified here: the Windows-gated eviction call site compiles on no
platform available locally (aws-lc-sys needs windows.h to cross-compile).
Type-checked by reading; owed a Windows runner build.

Known gaps, stated rather than papered over: a mode-switch rebuild that
FAILS keeps streaming the old mode and leaves its stall unannounced, and
three other in-place rebuild sites are still silent — the Gaming/Desktop
session switch, the ABR re-target's fallback open_video rebuild (~0.6 s,
and self-inflicted: the controller causing the stall its next window reads
as congestion), and reset_stalled_encoder.

enricobuehler 0196c75769 fix(android): every Opus session was advertising the lossless capability, and the ABI doc told it to
Two things: a live opt-in bug, and the 44.1 kHz family.

Android returned `(48_000, BITS_16)` for the "Standard (Opus)" setting and handed it to
`connect_with_audio_format`, whose capability rule sets the bit when EITHER field is
non-zero — it keys on "the caller specified a format", not "the format differs from the
default", because otherwise 48/16 would be the one rung on the ladder nobody could ask
for. The host's gate accepts 48/16 as a supported format. So on any host with the
operator policy enabled, a user who chose Opus silently got the lossless plane at
1.5 Mbps.

`punktfunk_connect_ex11`'s doc caused it: it said passing 48000/16 was "exactly `ex10`,
byte-for-byte on the wire". That stopped being true when the capability rule changed and
nobody updated the sentence. It now says the opposite explicitly, including that a
hardcoded 48 000/16 as a stand-in for "default" opts every ordinary session in. Both ends
of the Android path send the `(0, 0)` unspecified sentinel now, and two tests pin the
asymmetry from either side of the JNI boundary.

The 44.1 kHz half mirrors core: the client's own `per_ms` had the same divide-first
defect, so its conversions are exact now, and `frame_samples` delegates to core rather
than re-deriving — at 44 100 Hz a 5 ms FRAME is 440 interleaved samples where 5 ms of
AUDIO is 441, and the shed and near-miss margin both mean "exactly one packet".

The openable-rate probe descends the requested rate's own family before falling to the
48 kHz floor, because AAudio grants a rate or fails and never substitutes. The floor is
accepted unprobed — universally granted, and the answer a failed probe falls back to —
so a default session still opens no stream and pays nothing. The probe uses the requested
channel count because the resolved one does not exist until the Welcome, which errs
toward Opus.

Surround is no longer hidden. The gates were removed rather than relaxed: core's ladder
is channel-aware and the host decides, so the client asks and reports what it was given.

enricobuehler 63312e0a19 feat(core): the rate divided before it multiplied, which is the whole reason 44.1 kHz was deferred
Lifts the design's §4.1 deferral and admits 44 100 / 88 200 / 176 400 Hz.

`JitterPolicy` and `AvSync` computed `per_ms = rate_hz / 1000 * channels` and then
expressed every figure as `ms * per_ms`. The division came FIRST, so 44 100 became 44
samples per millisecond and every depth, target, shed threshold, hard cap, de-prime
fuse and reported `buffer_ms` was 2.3 % low. 48 000 and 96 000 were exact only because
they happen to divide.

The design prescribed "denominate the policy in samples with a rational `per_ms`". No
rational type was needed: the defect was operator ORDER. Multiplying first and dividing
last is exact at every rate for one integer division per conversion, and 48/96 kHz stay
bit-identical by construction — `per_sec == 1000 × per_ms` exactly there, so both
conversions reduce to the old expression. Every existing policy test passes untouched.

`frame_samples()` now delegates to `pcm::samples_per_frame` rather than re-deriving the
count. At 44 100 Hz those differ: 5 ms of audio is 441 interleaved samples but a 5 ms
FRAME is 440, because 220.5 samples per channel do not exist. The near-miss margin and
the shed both mean "exactly one packet", so a self-derived answer would have described
a packet that does not exist.

`frame_duration_ns` is the new inverse, and it exists because a frame's label and its
duration have come apart. 44 100 divides none of the seven ladder rungs, 88 200 divides
only 5 ms, 176 400 only 5 ms and 2.5 ms — so a rung is a nominal length for the wire and
the ring, never a duration. Anything advancing a timestamp must use the real sample
count or the clock runs 0.23 % fast forever, which the A/V sync loop would fight and
never win.

`MAX_CONCEAL_PACKETS` was a frame count documented as "50 ms at the protocol's 5 ms
frames" — 20 ms at a 2 ms lossless frame. It is now `MAX_CONCEAL_MS` with the count
derived, and `AudioGapTracker` carries the frame the same way `JitterPolicy` and
`DroughtConceal` already do. The ABI conceal buffer sizes its run from the derived cap
while keeping the frame size at the longest rung — mismatched deliberately, and only in
the direction that cannot overrun.

Overflow is handled where the multiply-first order creates it: 480 000 ms at 176 400 Hz
by 8 channels is 6.8e11, which wraps a 32-bit usize before the divide brings it back, so
the intermediates are u64/u128 and saturate rather than wrap — a wrapped window is a
tiny one, i.e. a fuse that blows instantly.

enricobuehler a81c6ac789 feat(core): a ported de-jitter policy had no way to learn the real frame length
Two independent workstreams hit the same wall: `PUNKTFUNK_AUDIO_FRAME_MS` is the Opus
plane's 5 ms, the lossless plane runs 4 ms at 48/24 and 2 ms at 96/24, and nothing in
the C surface carried the resolved value. An embedder that PORTS the de-jitter policy
rather than draining `next_audio_pcm` — the Apple client does exactly this — was stuck
compiling against 5 ms, which sheds 2.5 frames at a time on a 96 kHz session and puts
the target floor a frame too deep.

The earlier judgement that no C embedder needs this rested on `next_audio_pcm`
reporting each frame's real length in `frame_count`. That is not true in the case that
matters: concealed frames are PREPENDED into the same buffer, so the count answers "how
many samples did I get", not "how long is one frame". The two questions coincide only
when nothing was lost.

Microseconds, not milliseconds — the ladder has sub-millisecond rungs and 2 500 µs must
not truncate to 2 ms. `0` means the host stated nothing, in which case the old constant
is right.

Added, not widened, like the rate and depth accessors before it.

enricobuehler 88d29d3615 chore(core): regenerate the C header for the FRAME_MS note
cbindgen picked the doc comment up on the next build; the checked-in header
must not disagree with the source it is generated from.

enricobuehler 435962ba38 feat(core): the client had no way to be told what audio format it was about to receive
C ABI 23 -> 24.

The resolved rate, depth, codec and frame duration now follow the exact path
`audio_channels` already takes — Hello carries the request, Welcome carries what the
host actually resolved, and the client opens its device from the Welcome rather than
from what it asked for. A host may resolve lower than requested; that is the whole
point of "the client asks and the host obliges if it can".

`0xD3` decodes through the same sink as `0xC9`, so nothing downstream of the demux
changes. Concealment does change: a lossless format has no PLC, because there is
nothing in a raw frame from which to synthesise its successor, so the PCM plane uses
`PcmConceal` where the Opus plane calls into libopus.

Two ABI hazards handled by adding rather than widening. `PunktfunkAudioPcm` and
`PunktfunkStats` are repr(C) with no struct_size guard, so a new field in either would
break every C embedder that allocates one by value; the rate and depth arrive through
accessors instead, mirroring `punktfunk_connection_audio_channels`. And
`punktfunk_connect_ex11` is a new entry point rather than a wider `ex10` — `ex5`
through `ex10` are byte-for-byte unchanged and delegate with the 48 kHz/16-bit
defaults, the `next_rumble_cmd2` precedent from ABI 18.

`PUNKTFUNK_AUDIO_SAMPLE_RATE_HZ` is KEPT with its value and meaning unchanged. It is
the default rate, embedders size rings from it, and deleting it would be a silent C
break; hi-res sessions use the accessor.

The conceal buffer is sized once and never reallocated — the embedder is already
holding a pointer into it — so a PCM frame decodes into scratch and is copied in under
a clamp. An oversized or malformed datagram truncates rather than growing the buffer.
A test pins the pointer and length across a 200,000-sample datagram and a 38-packet
loss run.

The hi-res cap is advertised only when the caller asked for a non-default format,
because it means "capable AND turned on" and only the embedder knows whether its
device can open at that format. One consequence worth knowing: 48 kHz/16-bit is
byte-identical to a legacy request, so that particular rung is not reachable through
the parameter pair alone.

Also records, at the line itself, why `datagram_send_buffer_size` is NOT raised for the
lossless plane: it would quadruple the Opus plane's worst-case backlog, the two cannot
be sized separately before the handshake resolves, and quinn evicts oldest-first while
returning Ok — so those drops cannot be counted through the API at all.

enricobuehler 7e97e600c7 feat(wire): the audio plane could not say what format it was carrying, so lossless had no way to be negotiated
The `0xC9` plane's header has no rate, depth or codec field, and `Hello`/`Welcome`
carried only a channel count. A second, lossless plane therefore needs its own tag and
its own negotiation rather than a wider header.

`0xD3` carries interleaved LE PCM behind DELIBERATELY the same 13-byte header as
`0xC9`, so `AudioGapTracker` and the pts/A-V-sync plumbing work unchanged and the only
new logic is the payload and its concealment. One frame per datagram, never
fragmented; the frame duration is chosen at session start from the raw frame size so
it cannot exceed the path MTU. Redundancy is not defined for this plane and is never
sent with it.

`Hello` gains `audio_rate_hz`/`audio_bits` — what the client is asking for. `Welcome`
gains `audio_codec`/`audio_rate_hz`/`audio_bits`/`audio_frame_us` — what the host
actually resolved, which may be lower, and which the client must open its device from
rather than from what it requested.

Two wire traps, both now covered:

`Welcome`'s tail is conditional — `cipher` at 68 and the 32-byte ChaCha key at 69..101
are emitted only for ChaCha — so an appended field lands at 79 under AES and 111 under
ChaCha. Getting that wrong breaks soft-AES clients (webOS) and nothing else, which is
exactly the kind of bug that ships. A test pins both offsets and both total lengths.

`Hello`'s post-HDR tail is capped at 27 bytes, because with no HDR block present the
decoder disambiguates by remaining length and a 28-byte tail would be misread AS an
HDR block. That budget goes from 3 spent to 8; a test pins it.

A default Opus session stays byte-identical on both messages: `Welcome` is still
exactly 68 bytes, `Hello` still 26.

`HOST_CAP_AUDIO_HIRES` takes the LAST free `host_caps` bit. The next host capability
needs a second byte and an ABI bump; the constant says so where someone will read it.
2026-08-16 01:37:19 +02:00
enricobuehler 368cd3c13d feat(audio): the jitter policy took the sample rate from a constant, so a lossless plane had nowhere to put one
H1 of the hi-res programme, plus the PCM payload H2 needs.

`JitterPolicy` and `AvSync` read `SAMPLE_RATE_HZ` directly, so every depth, target,
shed threshold and reported `buffer_ms` was 48 kHz by construction. Both now take the
rate explicitly via `new_at_rate`; `new` delegates at the protocol default, so all
three production callers and the seventeen policy tests keep byte-identical behaviour.

The rate is denominated in integer samples per millisecond and stays that way. 48 and
96 kHz are exact; 44 100 truncates to 44 samples/ms, a silent 2.3% error in every
figure the policy computes. That deferral now has a `debug_assert` tripwire rather
than a comment, so adding a rate the arithmetic cannot represent is loud.

`audio::pcm` is the second plane's payload: interleaved LE integer samples, no codec.
FLAC was the obvious choice and does not earn its place here — a datagram over the
path MTU is not sent at all and this plane is never fragmented, so frame duration must
be sized from the worst case, and FLAC's worst case is a VERBATIM subframe: raw plus a
header. It would negotiate the same frame duration, the same packet rate and the same
send-buffer sizing, buying only average bytes on a plane that is provisioned for peak
because it rides outside the ABR loop. At 24 bits from an undithered float mix it
saves least of all, and it would cost a spike gate plus a dependency on five packaging
targets.

The frame ladder is sized from raw bytes, which fixes a latent bug in the design: the
doc's table sized 96/24 at 2.5 ms from a *coded* estimate of ~1000 B, but the raw frame
is 1440 B and does not fit a 1472-byte-ceiling datagram. Under FLAC that would have
been a verbatim frame that silently failed to send. A test pins it.

Bit-exactness is proven rather than asserted: every representable code at both depths
survives wire to f32 and back unchanged.

enricobuehler 26d06195f5 fix(client): a host recovery anchor lifted the freeze onto a grey picture, unchecked
Field report: the native-vulkan HEVC stream goes grey with moving artifacts after a
host context change (starting a game), and recovers by itself in 0.5-2 s.

Of the three signals that lift the post-loss freeze, two are self-evident to the
client and one is pure hearsay. An IDR predicts from nothing. A recovery mark is
half a re-anchor and the gate says so by requiring two. But USER_FLAG_RECOVERY_ANCHOR
is the HOST asserting a fact about the CLIENT's decoder -- "the picture I coded this
P-frame against is one you still hold, intact" -- and the gate took it on faith, on
the first occurrence, with no scrutiny at all.

The host derives that claim from bookkeeping that tracks what the client RECEIVED,
not what it managed to DECODE. Those diverge exactly when the client had to conceal,
and then the anchor lifts the freeze onto a picture predicted from damage AND LEAVES
IT LIFTED -- so the grey plate reaches the screen and keeps reaching it until some
later signal re-arms and the 500 ms backstop extracts a real IDR. That is the
observed 0.5-2 s, and it is the worst-shaped failure in the module: a re-anchor claim
the client can refute is worse than no claim, because no claim merely holds.

So corroborate it. pf-bitstream's planners now carry a per-picture clean bit --
damage propagates down the prediction chain, because the descendants of a concealed
picture raise no warning of their own -- surfaced as PicturePlan::references_clean
and carried to the consumer on DecodedVkFrame. The gate gains AnchorEvidence and
on_decoded_corroborated, and refuses an anchor whose references the client can prove
were damaged. Refusing can only ever hold LONGER: the freeze stays up, the backstop
fires on its ORIGINAL deadline, and the client escalates to the IDR the anchor failed
to be. Lanes with no local parser pass Unavailable and are bit-for-bit unchanged --
all 29 pre-existing reanchor tests pass untouched.

Also brings the H.264 decoder to parity with its two siblings, found on the way. It
was the only one of the three that failed OPEN: a DPB slot with no bound image was
traced and decoded anyway (H.265 and AV1 return UnboundReferenceSlot), reference_count
was computed after the held-slot loop so a dropped reference silently took an
unrelated slot's picture in its place, and there was no RecoveryLatch, so a failure
left the planner DPB, the slot map and the image bindings disagreeing forever. None
of it raised a warning, so the frame was shipped, presented, and cleared the demotion
streak on its way past. Both latches landed with the HEVC and AV1 decoders in August;
H.264 predates them and was never retro-fitted.

The damage classification moves onto the warning enums so the planner's ledger and
the client's concealment test cannot drift apart -- still exactly one list, now in
the crate that owns the enum, with pf_vkdecode::is_integrity_warning* delegating.
Every copy stays an exhaustive match with no wildcard: a future variant must stop the
compiler, never default to clean.

enricobuehler ff513a18e1 fix(apple): the fourth client had no way to reach the one decoder that could conceal a drought
Completes WP-C1 of design/host-source-stutter-fixes.md. The three Rust clients
conceal a packet drought on their decode thread; Apple could not, and the reason
is structural rather than an oversight: its playout ring is Swift and its Opus
decoder lives behind the C ABI, so the drain thread had nothing to call. Standing
up a second decoder Swift-side would not have worked either — PLC extrapolates
from the LAST DECODED FRAME, so a fresh decoder conceals from empty state.

So the ABI grows one function. `punktfunk_connection_audio_plc` synthesizes a
single frame from the connection's own live decoder, returning no-frame when
nothing has decoded yet (there is no state to extrapolate from) and when libopus
declines to interpolate — a timeout's answer, not an error. Frames it returns
carry seq and pts of zero, because concealed audio was never on the wire and must
not reach an A/V-sync observation; the drain loop skips `av.observe` for them.

The double-conceal defence had to move. On the Rust clients the decode loop
subtracts frames it already concealed from what AudioGapTracker then asks for;
Swift cannot, because the tracker is behind the ABI. So `AudioPcmState` counts
its own concealment and `decode_packet` does the subtraction — same invariant,
enforced one layer lower, with a Rust test standing in for the Swift half.

Swift gets the policy port beside `AudioRing`'s existing one, in the same shape
and for the same reason: one budget, `deprimeMS * 2`, denominated in time and not
in callbacks. `plc_ms=` joins the 10 s line as it did on the other three.

ABI_VERSION 22 → 23. ⚠ That number is the one thing here worth a second look: 21
was claimed twice by concurrent worktrees once already, and 23 is correct only
against what is visible from this branch.

enricobuehler 19411d8d6d feat(host): sessions now carry their grants — admission, expiry, and the input plane enforce them (per-client access WP3–WP5)
Admission consults effective() (an expired record knocks into the pending
list; re-approval is the re-grant), the Welcome advertises the real mask +
remaining lifetime, and a per-session lifecycle task owns the deadline:
wall-clock re-evaluated every lap, AccessUpdate warnings at T−5m/T−1m,
console edits folded into the live Arc<AtomicU32> within one watch event,
and the typed 0x69 close on expiry / expire-now / unpair.

The datagram dispatch classifies every plane against that one atomic before
offer() (one relaxed load per event; per-class counters, one warn per class),
the input thread re-guards the pad-creating arms (deny-at-setup: no GAMEPAD,
no uinput/pad-audio), launch without LAUNCH is a typed 0x6A refusal before
the handshake, and clipboard ANDs the grant into the operator policy — new
CLIP_REASON_NOT_PERMITTED (5), coordinator never starts ungranted.

Events: access.granted / access.changed / access.expired from the facade
choke points and the deadline fire.

enricobuehler ee6dff116c feat(apple): the session wears its access level — chip, countdown, and capture that asks first
ABI v21 (per-client access WP10): punktfunk_connection_grants and
punktfunk_connection_access_expires_in read the session's LIVE access
state (Welcome seed, latest-wins over every mid-session AccessUpdate),
and punktfunk_connection_end_reject surfaces the typed rejection a
mid-session close carried, so an access expiry renders its real
sentence instead of the generic host-error one. NEW symbols only; the
Rust-side live slots they read landed with the pf-client-core work.

Swift: PunktfunkConnection wraps the three (grant bits, the derived
AccessLevel labels, and class-gated send funnels — key/pointer/pad/pen/
mic events the grants exclude never leave the device); SessionModel
polls at the 1 Hz stats tick for the chip ("Controller only · ends in
1 h 58 m"), the T−5 m / T−1 m warning toasts, mic + clipboard hiding,
and the live release of an engaged capture on revoke; macOS gates
engage + the cursor grab and the iPad gates pointer lock on the bits;
tvOS states the level as a stats-overlay line instead of a chip. A
full-and-permanent session — every old host — renders exactly today's
UI.

enricobuehler 97fe3a0ff5 feat(core): the grant vocabulary — six bits, one exhaustive classifier, and the Welcome advert (per-client access WP1)
The wire layer of design/per-client-access.md: quic/access.rs carries the
GRANT_* bits (u32, reserved-must-be-zero), the three presets, and the
exhaustive InputKind -> GrantClass classifier whose wildcard-free match is
the default-deny mechanism — a new input kind now fails to compile until
someone decides its grant class.

AccessUpdate { grants, remaining_secs } rides the control stream as 0x58
(verified free; both peers' dispatch loops drop unknown ids with a warn,
so old clients just miss the courtesy). reject.rs grows the 0x69/0x6A
close codes -> RejectReason::{AccessExpired, LaunchNotPermitted}, mirrored
into PunktfunkStatus -30/-31 and the shared client-facing sentences.

The Welcome advertises grants + expires_in_secs as trailing fields one
link past mgmt_port, with the same placeholder discipline: emitting the
advert forces the cipher byte and the mgmt port so the two u32s land at a
deterministic offset, while a full-control permanent session stays
byte-identical to the pre-grants wire form. Absent fields decode to
GRANT_ALL / permanent — exactly what an old host enforces. No
WIRE_VERSION bump (trailing fields, per the v20 mgmt_port precedent), no
ABI bump (no new C symbols; the header gains prefixed defines and two
appended status values only). The host sends GRANT_ALL until WP2/WP3
wire the trust store in.

enricobuehler 8ae524d801 fix(pairing): every device pending approval was called "This device"
The web console shows exactly what the host was told, and the host was told
"This device" by every Apple client — so the outstanding-pairings view and the
approve dialog listed identical rows for an iPad, an Apple TV and a Mac.

The name rides `Hello::name`, which embedders fill from `client::device_name()`.
That resolves `COMPUTERNAME` (Windows-only) then `HOSTNAME` (a shell variable
never exported into a launchd-started process), and its last resort was the
literal "This device". No Apple GUI app has either variable, and the C ABI had
no device-name parameter for one to pass a better answer through, so every
Apple device fell through to the placeholder. Linux (/etc/hostname) and Windows
were unaffected; Android sent `Build.MODEL`, which names the product rather than
the unit — two of the same tablet were still indistinguishable.

- core: `punktfunk_connect_ex10` = `ex9` + `device_name` (C ABI v21, no wire
change — `ex9` keeps its signature and passes a null name for the old
default). Truncated to `HELLO_NAME_MAX` on a character boundary, since
  slicing a multi-byte name mid-scalar panics.
- core: `device_name()` falls back to `gethostname()` before the placeholder,
so an embedder that passes nothing still gets a real name.
- apple: `DeviceName.current` (`Host.localizedName` / `UIDevice.current.name`,
falling back to the hostname when 16+ answers with the bare model) is sent on
connect, and the two pairing sheets plus the ceremony now read that one source
  instead of three separate literals.
- android: `Settings.Global.DEVICE_NAME` — the name the user typed in Settings —
ahead of `Build.MODEL`. The "approve this device" prompt quotes the same

enricobuehler 3cc8fa7ee0 feat(core): the host tells the client where its library is, so mDNS is no longer required
ABI 19 -> 20. Wire protocol unchanged (still 2).

Persisting the mgmt port (fe2bfeca) made a moved port survive mDNS going away, but mDNS was still
the only SOURCE: a host that had never been seen on it — VPN-only, a routed subnet, or simply added
by address on a network where multicast has never worked — had nothing to learn from and fell back
to 47990. The `Welcome` now carries the port, so the client learns it over the connection it has
already authenticated and discovery stops being involved at all.

`Welcome.mgmt_port`, a trailing u16 after the cipher block, following the same additive discipline
as the eight fields before it (compositor, gamepad, bitrate_kbps, bit_depth, color, chroma_format,
audio_channels, codec): an older peer stops earlier and gets a documented default, in both
directions, so WIRE_VERSION does not move.

⚠ THE TRAP, and why emitting the port forces the `cipher` placeholder: `cipher` is emitted only
when non-default, so appending the port to an AES Welcome would land its LOW BYTE at offset 68 —
exactly where every shipped 0.28.x client reads `cipher`, whose decode is deliberately fail-closed
on an unknown id. 47991 is 0xBB57, so byte 68 would read 0x57 = 87, and EVERY current client would
fail the handshake against a host that had merely moved its mgmt port. `encode` therefore writes an
explicit cipher byte whenever a port rides along (the placeholder discipline `Hello::encode`
already uses); a current client reads AES, a pre-cipher client stops before 68 regardless. The test
pins the byte, both offsets (69 AES / 101 ChaCha), and that a host advertising no port still emits
exactly 68 bytes — this field costs the common case nothing.

Host: `mgmt::effective_port()` reads the same resolved bind `publish_endpoint` writes, so the wire,
the endpoint file and the mDNS TXT cannot disagree — one lookup, not a fourth place to compute a
port. `0` on the standalone punktfunk1-host binary, which has no management API: advertising 47990
from a host that is not serving it would be worse than saying nothing.

Clients persist it on connect, feeding the store plumbing fe2bfeca already built:
* Rust — `on_connected` grew the port alongside the fingerprint, plus `learn_mgmt_port_by_fp`
(keyed by fingerprint alone, the identity a just-connected client is certain of).
* Apple — `PunktfunkConnection.hostMgmtPort` + `updateMgmtPort` at the existing markConnected site.
* Android — a new `nativeHostMgmtPort` JNI call, persisted where the session is constructed.

Verified: Linux (pf-lxcheck2, amd64) `cargo check --all-targets` clean across punktfunk-core,
pf-host-config, punktfunk-host, pf-client-core, pf-presenter, punktfunk-cli, punktfunk-client-linux
and punktfunk-client-session, each confirmed genuinely compiled (counting `Compiling` as well as
`Checking` — cargo prints the former for bin-only packages, which is what made an earlier gate look
vacuous when it was not). punktfunk-core quic tests 76/76. Android: :kit+:app Kotlin, ParseRecordTest
12/12, and cargoNdkClippy clean for aarch64-linux-android. Apple: xcframework rebuilt at ABI 20,
`swift build` complete. cargo fmt --all --check clean. NOT verified: the Windows client

enricobuehler c7d0fd2e03 release: 0.28.0 — version bump, notes, CHANGELOG, Play notes
180 commits since v0.27.0. Cut from origin/main 9c133350.

THE NUMBER: 0.28.0, not 0.27.1. The CHANGELOG's in-development section was
titled "v0.27.1", which the release does not support — 17 `feat(...)` commits,
a packager-visible default flip (GameStream opt-in on every route), the
edition-2024 MSRV rise, and now a genuinely BREAKING host change (the built-in
library scanners are deleted). `scripts/ci/pf-version.sh`'s canary rule agrees
independently: CI already stamps canaries `0.28.<run>`.

TWO DEFECTS FOUND AND FIXED WHILE PREPARING, both pre-existing on main:

1. C ABI_VERSION was stale at 18. Two exported symbols landed since v0.27.0
   without a bump — punktfunk_connection_note_frame_index_ex and
   punktfunk_reanchor_gate_arm_expecting_drops (72 -> 74 declarations in
include/punktfunk_core.h). The constant's own doc history makes the rule
explicit: v17 and v18 each bumped for adding exactly one symbol. Bumped to 19
with its doc entry; the header is regenerated (cbindgen, CI-gated) and the
C ABI harness passes printing abi_version=19.

2. docs-site/public/openapi.json had drifted to 0.21.0 against api/openapi.json,
missing five endpoints. The copy is a documented manual step that nothing in
CI enforces (CONTRIBUTING.md says so outright). Re-synced — and then it
DRIFTED AGAIN inside this same cycle when the scanner-removal regen updated
api/openapi.json alone, so it is re-synced a second time and the CHANGELOG
now says to treat the copy as part of regenerating, not a follow-up.

The final docs batch also invalidated a line in this CHANGELOG: the identity
section still said the P-256 key was "generated by ring via rcgen", which contradicted
this same document's "ring is gone from the tree entirely". Corrected to "rcgen on the
workspace's aws-lc-rs backend", matching 92db6651.

api/openapi.json stays stamped 0.27.0: it cannot be regenerated here
(punktfunk-host does not compile on macOS) and does not need to be — the drift
test normalizes info.version, so only the SURFACE is gated, and the surface is
current.

CHANGELOG: retitled to v0.28.0, gained the version table (wire 2 unchanged; C
ABI 18->19; edition 2021->2024 and MSRV 1.82->1.85; driver protocol 6 and
gamepad channel 3 unchanged; plugin-kit 0.4.0->0.4.1), a breaking-changes
section, and ~29 topics the in-development text predated — including the four
that landed last: the scanner->plugin migration, the Mutter rebuild
serialization, the KWin <=60 Hz readback, and the Apple/Android de-prime fuse.

THE BREAKING ONE, stated plainly in both halves: the six built-in library
scanners are DELETED and the library is assembled entirely by plugins. There is
deliberately no migration — a plugin claims its store and republishes each title
under the same `<store>:<external_id>` id, so entry ids, GameStream app ids, art
caches, Moonlight pins, per-source toggles and per-entry hides all keep working.
The one visible consequence, and the whole upgrade note: a host with NO library
plugins installed has an empty grid.

The Mutter two-client segfault this release now fixes (a5c9b7b8) is the one
found during THIS release's on-glass validation: chaining two clients through a
kept display killed gnome-shell in meta_monitor_manager_rebuild. It was A/B'd on
.21 against the released 0.27.0 and shown byte-identical there, so it was never
a 0.28.0 regression — and the fix's own commit message cites that A/B.

GATES RUN, all green on this commit (re-run after the rebase onto 86cbbea0):
  cargo fmt --all --check clean
cargo metadata --locked OK against the new dependency tree
  Cargo.lock versions-only vs origin/main, 36/36 lines
  cargo test -p punktfunk-core 210 passed
  c_abi harness PASS, abi_version=19 (needs LIBRARY_PATH
for opus on macOS; a link path, not a defect)
  docs-site build exit 0 (bun install --frozen-lockfile + build)
Play notes gate 440/500 CHARACTERS, not byte-identical to
any other release (`•` is 3 bytes — count
                                     characters, as the gate does)
notes voice check 0 hits above `## For developers`; TL;DR at
6 bullets (README caps it at six)

ON-GLASS (against the canary of 14425716, code-identical bar ABI_VERSION):
Windows .173 0.28.13309 + Android and iPad, Linux .21 0.28.0-0.00013300 +
iPhone — both PASS. The idle sleep-blocker fix is proven before/after on .173
(`powercfg /requests` SYSTEM: the mic devnode -> "Keine."), and the GameStream
flip is proven at the socket level on .21 (47984/47989/47999 absent by default,
restored by PUNKTFUNK_GAMESTREAM=1). Old-client compat holds: Android 0.26.0
streams against the 0.28.0 host.

NOT re-validated: the Mutter fix itself. .21 (VM 103) is stopped — it and
home-bazzite-2 (VM 119, currently running) share one passed-through GPU, so
bringing .21 up would stop the other VM. Owed once .21 is free; the repro is
iPhone 2868x1320 -> SIGTERM -> Android 2800x1260, and the marker to confirm the
build carries the fix is the string "mutter: waited out a monitor-topology
rebuild before releasing the lock".

NOT INCLUDED: the 14 unpushed pf-capture/pf-vdisplay sweep commits on the local
main. Never through CI; pushing them is the user's call.

enricobuehler c58217e403 Merge pull request 'fix(client): stop the double-arm race re-freezing RFI-healed streams' (#174) from worktree-gate-double-arm-fix into main 2026-08-12 13:11:51 +00:00
enricobuehler 2a62fe7857 fix(client): stop the double-arm race re-freezing RFI-healed streams
Every unrecoverable loss armed the client's freeze gate twice: instantly at
frame-index-gap detection (which fires the RFI), and ~120 ms later when the
reassembler ages the lost frame into frames_dropped and poll() re-armed
unconditionally. An LTR-RFI recovery anchor lands in ~60 ms — between the two
signals — so the stale climb re-froze a bit-exact-healed stream, the host
swallowed the re-ask as an RFI echo, and the picture stayed frozen until the
overdue backstop extracted a full IDR: the field 'H265 freezes on every loss,
AV1 fine' signature on AMD hosts (AMF is the only LTR-RFI backend; the slower
IDR path usually lands after the climb and dodged the race).

The gap-arm now pre-credits the expected climb (ReanchorGate::arm_expecting_drops;
credit expires after DROP_CREDIT_WINDOW so a straggler-filled gap can't mask a
later real loss), and poll() consumes credited climbs instead of re-arming.
Plumbed through every embedder: pf-client-core's session pump, Android's
sync/async loops (note_frame_index now returns the gap width), and the Swift
client via new ABI exports punktfunk_connection_note_frame_index_ex +
punktfunk_reanchor_gate_arm_expecting_drops (additive; the bool ABI stays).

enricobuehler 9a59504ba4 fix(punktfunk-core): validate InputKind before forming &InputEvent in the C ABI
abi.rs's two send-input entry points built &InputEvent straight out of
caller memory with ev.as_ref(); InputKind is repr(u8) with 16 valid
discriminants, so a C embedder writing ev->kind = 42 was immediate UB the
moment the reference formed — in a file whose stated principle is that
failures become status codes. New read_input_event() checks null, reads
the tag as a raw byte, validates through the same InputKind::from_u8 the
wire path uses, and only then forms the reference; bad tags return
InvalidArg. Every other field is a plain integer, valid for any pattern.

Test stages the event in MaybeUninit storage so the test itself never
holds a reference to the invalid value. 380 lib tests + the C harness
round-trip + clippy -D warnings green on .25; header regenerated.

enricobuehler e19f11bb0d feat(abi/apple): carry the trigger motors to non-Rust clients — ABI 18, next_rumble_cmd2
The `0xCA` wire already carries the two Xbox impulse-trigger motors (v3), and the Rust decode path
already parses them; `datagram_task.rs` dropped them on the floor with a comment naming exactly this
work as what remained. The blocker was the C ABI: every non-Rust client pulls rumble through
`punktfunk_connection_next_rumble_cmd`, whose out-params cannot carry two more channels.

    PunktfunkStatus punktfunk_connection_next_rumble_cmd2(
        PunktfunkConnection *c, uint16_t *pad, uint16_t *low, uint16_t *high,
        uint16_t *left_trigger, uint16_t *right_trigger,
        uint32_t *backstop_ms, uint32_t timeout_ms);

⚠️ ADDED, not widened. `_cmd` keeps its signature and its values bit-identical for handle-only
traffic — out-of-tree embedders depend on it and `docs/embedding-the-c-abi.md` documents it, so
silently changing an exported symbol would break every consumer at once. `nm` on the staticlib shows
all four rumble entry points still exported. `ABI_VERSION` 17 → 18; every other site reads it
dynamically, so there are no hardcoded mirrors to drift.

⚠️ ONE HONEST BEHAVIOURAL DELTA, documented in `abi.rs` and pinned by a test: against a
trigger-driving host a `_cmd` caller now receives commands with `low == high == 0` where the demux
previously dropped the update entirely. They are idempotent handle stops, and the redundant-stop
suppression cannot fold them because the command as a whole is not silent. Zero cost today —
nothing sources non-zero triggers.

The dedupe-jitter proof was RE-DERIVED rather than widened, which is the kind of thing that quietly
rots when a tuple grows: the nudge touches only `low` by ±1 LSB and `emit` is only reached with a
non-silent level, so the nudged tuple can collide with the four-field stop sentinel only at
`(1,0,0,0)`. A test pins both directions — refuse at `(1,0,0,0)`, flip freely at `(1,0,lt,0)`.

Apple renders them: `RumbleRenderer` gains `Motor?` slots at `GCHapticsLocality.leftTrigger` /
`.rightTrigger` beside the existing handles. A controller without trigger actuators degrades
silently — a nil engine yields a nil slot and `reconcile` no-ops — and absent localities are never
logged, because on most pads that is the normal case rather than a fault. The macOS DualSense
raw-HID branch stays a deliberate no-op: a DualSense has ADAPTIVE triggers, not trigger rumble
motors, and inventing a mapping there would buzz the wrong thing.

🛑 BUILT AHEAD OF A PRODUCER, DELIBERATELY, AND NOTHING HERE CLAIMS OTHERWISE. Nothing can currently
source trigger rumble on Windows and that is measured, not assumed: `XINPUT_VIBRATION` has two
members, and GameInput — the only four-motor API — does not enumerate an xinputhid-promoted Xbox pad
at all, verified against a REAL Microsoft Elite which is equally invisible to it while classic
XInput reads it live. So this path has never been exercised end to end and the comments say so.

VERIFIED
  * `cargo test -p punktfunk-core --features quic --lib` 378 passed on macOS, 203 on Windows;
clippy `-D warnings` clean with and without default features; `cargo fmt --all --check` clean.
  * The generated header is regenerated and idempotent on re-run (CI diffs it).
  * SWIFT ACTUALLY COMPILES AND RUNS: `swift build` clean and `swift test` 262 passed / 0 failures
in `clients/apple`, against a locally built xcframework. (Editor SourceKit errors about
`PunktfunkCore`/`DualSenseHID` are index noise from that gitignored artifact — a real build
resolves both, and the `DualSenseHID` references are untouched by this change.)
  * `cargo build -p punktfunk-host` clean on Windows.

NOT VERIFIED
  * End to end — see above; there is no producer.
  * Whether a real Xbox pad on Apple actually reports the two trigger localities. The degrade needs
no code, but the positive case is untested.
  * `pf-client-core` (the SDL renderer) does not build on macOS at baseline and is unbuilt here. It
only reads `RumbleCommand` fields and never constructs one, so added fields cannot break it, but
it still calls `_cmd`; wiring `SDL_RumbleGamepadTriggers` is separate work.

ANDROID: NOT DONE, and it should stay that way for now. `pack_rumble` packs pad/backstop/low/high
into bits 0..52 of a `jlong` with `-1` reserved as a sentinel — two more `u16` do not fit. The right
fix if ever wanted is the direct-`ByteBuffer` shape `nativeNextHidout` already uses in the same file
(zero-allocation, caller-owned, the established idiom), not a second `jlong` (racy across two calls)
nor `long[]` (an allocation per pull). But no Android device exposes trigger actuators at all, so
there is nothing to render. Separately stale and also not fixed: `NativeBridge.kt`'s KDoc still
documents the v2 `ttl_ms` layout rather than `backstop_ms`.

enricobuehler 4f9071b980 feat(pads/windows): three Xbox identities — Wireless, One S and Elite Series 2
Until now there was one Xbox identity, `device_type = 4` / `045E:0B13`, and Windows folded a
client's `XboxOne` request onto it because the only Windows Xbox backend was the XUSB companion,
which presents one fixed 360 identity and cannot vary it. The HID backend can, so the fold goes and
two identities join it:

  devtype 4 045E:0B13 pf_xboxwireless Xbox Wireless Controller
  devtype 5 045E:02FD pf_xboxones Xbox Wireless Controller (One S)
devtype 6 045E:0B22 pf_xboxelite Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2

`GamepadPref::XboxElite` takes wire byte 11 — the first unassigned one, and the round-trip test
previously asserted `from_u8(11) == Auto` with a comment saying assigning it must update that; the
sentinel moved to 12. The C ABI mirror and the generated header moved with it.

ALL THREE SHARE ONE REPORT DESCRIPTOR, deliberately. In HID terms they are the same pad; the
descriptor is the report shape, not the identity. §3 of the handoff records that our single
hand-written descriptor already cost three separate bugs, and inventing two more would multiply
that debt for no measured gain. They differ in VID/PID, product string, hardware id and Device
Manager description only.

⚠️ All three install `pfGamepadXbox`, the section that attaches the `xinputhid` bus filter. That
was the open risk: Microsoft's `xinputhid.inf` promotes by an explicit hardware-id allow-list
containing `02D1, 02DD, 02E3, 02EA, 0B00, 0B0A, 0B13, 02FF` — and NEITHER `02FD` NOR `0B22` is on
it. Measured on .173: promotion does not care, because it comes from our own AddReg rather than
from matching Microsoft's ids. All three gain `IG_00`, register an XUSB interface, and are read
live by classic XInput. Had this gone the other way the two new identities would have been strictly
worse than the one they joined.

The XUSB escape hatch needed a runtime degrade to stay honest. `pick_gamepad` is compile-time only,
so with `PUNKTFUNK_XBOX_BACKEND=xusb` the host would have resolved and echoed `xboxelite` in its
`Welcome` while actually building a 360 pad. `degrade_xbox_identity` folds the identity back at
runtime, mirroring `degrade_if_no_uhid`.

VERIFIED ON WINDOWS (.173 — none of this compiles on macOS; the driver needs the WDK and the rest
is `cfg(windows)`):
  * `cargo test -p pf-inject --lib` 104/104 — including `hwid_matches_inf`,
    `hwid_devtype_table_matches_the_driver` and `only_the_xbox_identity_installs_the_xinputhid_section`,
all now sweeping the whole identity set and asserting the section split in both directions.
  * `cargo test -p punktfunk-core --lib gamepad` 7/7; `cargo check -p punktfunk-host` clean.
  * Driver builds and signs; the descriptor/`wReportLength` const asserts still hold with the
    descriptor shared three ways.
  * ON GLASS, per identity, via the new `--xboxones` / `--xboxelite` devtest legs: each gets its own
    devnode (`PF_XBOX_0` / `PF_XBOX_ONES_0` / `PF_XBOX_ELITE_0`), each HID child gains `IG_00`, each
registers an XUSB interface, and XInput reads each live (packets advancing, `buttons=0x1000`).
  * macOS: `cargo fmt --all --check` clean in both workspaces.

NOT VERIFIED / NOT DONE
  * **Elite paddles are NOT implemented.** `BTN_PADDLE1..4` would need descriptor buttons, and once
`xinputhid` promotes the pad it claims the HID collection exclusively — XInput has no paddle
fields and the HID consumers that do may be locked out, so the buttons would likely reach
nobody. The decisive measurement is cheap and named in the code: hold a paddle bit set and see
whether a user-mode HID reader still gets reports. Until then the Edge remains the only virtual
pad with native back-button slots and nothing should be advertised otherwise.
  * **No client picker offers the Elite**, and none can auto-detect it — SDL3's `GamepadType` has no
Elite variant. It is reachable today only via `PUNKTFUNK_GAMEPAD=xboxelite` or a hand-edited
client setting. All five clients ship the same curated six options by deliberate parity, so
adding one is a cross-client UX change, not part of this.
  * Nothing here has run in a real streaming session; every measurement came from the devtest.

enricobuehler bd5735b803 feat(pads/windows): make the HID Xbox pad the default, and carry the trigger motors on the wire
Three changes that only make sense together: the HID backend becomes the default now that it is a
superset of the XUSB one, the rumble datagram grows the two Xbox impulse-trigger motors, and the
INF-shape tests learn about the Xbox identity's own install section.

WP-E — `PUNKTFUNK_XBOX_BACKEND` now defaults to `hid`; `=xusb` is the escape hatch.
The knob existed for exactly one reason, recorded in its own doc comment: the HID pad could not
reach classic XInput, so defaulting to it would trade a known-working path for an unproven one.
That objection is gone — with the `xinputhid` bus filter the INF now attaches, the HID pad is
promoted like real hardware and keeps classic XInput while gaining everything XUSB never had
(Steam, SDL, RawInput, DirectInput, joy.cpl, WGI) plus rumble, which XUSB could not source at all.
The escape hatch stays because promotion leans on Microsoft's inbox `xinputhid.inf`; if a servicing
update changes it, one env var restores the old behaviour with no reinstall. An unrecognised value
takes the DEFAULT rather than the opt-out, so a typo cannot silently drop a user onto the path with
no HID collection.

WP-D — the `0xCA` rumble datagram gains a v3 form:
  v1 7 B: [0xCA][u16 pad][u16 low][u16 high]
  v2 10 B: … [u8 seq][u16 ttl_ms]
  v3 14 B: … [u16 lt][u16 rt]
v3 is built FROM v2's bytes rather than restating the layout, so the prefix relationship is
structural instead of a convention two encoders have to keep agreeing on, and every reader gates
with `>=`. The four levels share one seq and one ttl on purpose: they are one statement of the
pad's feedback at one instant, and sharing means the whole v2 apparatus — renewal cadence, stop
burst, the client's seq gate, the lease clamp — governs the triggers with no new code. The new
`RumbleUpdate` fields are plain `u16`, not `Option`: on a level-triggered plane "absent" must mean
zero, because "absent → keep the previous value" is the stuck-rumble bug in a new costume.
Only one backend can ever source them — the Windows HID Xbox pad, whose output report 0x03 carries
them. `XINPUT_VIBRATION` and evdev `FF_RUMBLE` have two members and no third, so every other
producer sends `lt = rt = 0`.

⚠️ The two TRIGGER `enable`-mask bits remain CONJECTURE. Bits 2/3 = left/right handle are measured;
bit 0/1 = the triggers are inferred from field order and nothing else. `parse_xbox_output` says so
inline, and no test asserts them — every test vector uses masks (0xFF, 0x00, 0x0C, 0xF3) whose
expectations hold whichever bits turn out to be right. XInput cannot settle this: it has two
motors.

The INF tests — `hwid_matches_inf` matched the install section by the exact string `=pfGamepad,`
and so stopped seeing the Xbox hardware ids the moment that identity moved to its own
`pfGamepadXbox` section. It failed loudly, which is the good outcome; it is now prefix-matched and
tolerant of further per-identity sections. Added
`only_the_xbox_identity_installs_the_xinputhid_section`, which asserts the split in BOTH
directions: the Xbox line must not install the shared section, and no other line may install the
Xbox one. Merging them back is a one-line edit that looks like tidying and would hand a DualSense
to Microsoft's Xbox translator.

VERIFIED
  * ON WINDOWS (.173, the only place this code compiles): `cargo test -p pf-inject --lib` 104/104,
including the new trigger tests and both INF tests; `cargo check -p punktfunk-host` clean.
  * macOS: `cargo fmt --all --check` clean; `cargo test -p punktfunk-core --features quic` rumble
    suite 22/22, including v3 round-trip and v3<->v2 cross-version parsing.
  * The pre-existing `c_abi_harness_round_trips` failure on macOS is `ld: library 'opus' not found`
and reproduces with these changes stashed.

NOT VERIFIED
  * No trigger rumble has ever been observed end to end — nothing can drive it yet (see the
conjecture note above), and no client renders it.
  * The default flip has NOT been exercised in a real streaming session; every measurement so far
came from the devtest harness. That is the on-glass run.
  * Non-Rust clients do not decode v3. They are blocked on a C ABI entry point first
    (`punktfunk_connection_next_rumble_cmd` has fixed out-params, ABI_VERSION 17); Apple could
render it via GCHapticsLocality.leftTrigger/.rightTrigger, Android structurally cannot (its
packed jlong is full) and has no trigger actuators anyway.

enricobuehler 0170da2a5f fix(client/apple): stop dropping rotation, and stop inventing it
G13 — the three capture-fidelity findings from the gyro sweep, two fixed and one
argued.

**The 4 ms floor was a DROP, and it was shedding real rotation.** A sample arriving
3.9 ms after the last one was discarded outright. That is the wrong shape for this
signal: buttons and sticks are absolute state, so a dropped frame costs nothing — the
next one says everything it would have. Angular velocity is a RATE, and a consumer
integrates it into an angle, so a dropped sample is rotation that happened and can never
be recovered. GameController's delivery jitters around the pad's own ~250 Hz, so a floor
set AT that rate does not shed a rare extra sample; it sheds a steady fraction of every
turn. And the error is one-signed, so it accumulates — aim drifting short, which reads
as bad sensitivity rather than as a bug.

Nothing needed the ceiling. GC delivers at the sensor's rate rather than faster, the SDL
client has always forwarded every sample, and the host's idle watchdog is a 100 ms
timeout this cannot outpace. The throttle's two fields went with it: `lastMotionNs` was
left set-but-never-read once the guard was gone, and `motionIntervalNs` had no other
consumer. (Notes elsewhere say `flush` parks motion and reads it — that is PR #88's
branch, not this one. Checked rather than assumed.)

**An X-Box pad was streaming gyro it does not have.** Capture attached to any `GCMotion`,
and an X-Box controller exposes one that reports gravity and NOTHING else. So the client
sent a permanently-zero `rotationRate` to the host as authoritative gyro, under a
declaration saying this pad has one. That is worse than having no motion plane at all: a
game sees a controller being held perfectly still forever, and there is nothing to fall
back to and nothing to notice. Now gated on `hasRotationRate`, which is GameController's
own answer to the question we actually mean.

The settings badge had the same bug from the same cause — `hasMotion` was
`motion != nil`, so an X-Box pad got a gyroscope icon. It now reads `hasRotationRate`
too. One wrong predicate was driving both the UI promise and the wire behaviour, which is
why they were wrong together.

That also simplifies G8's "your gyro can't reach this session" notice, which had to test
`hasRotationRate` itself to avoid nagging about a gyro the pad never had. With the attach
gated on it, the notice is just the else-branch.

**Motion stays on the main queue, and this is the argument for why.** GameController's
`handlerQueue` is a property of the CONTROLLER, not of an element, so moving motion off
main moves buttons, sticks, the touchpad and the escape chord with it. This class is
`@MainActor` throughout — eight `assumeIsolated` sites, the slot table, the gesture
timers — so that is a rewrite of the isolation model rather than a queue assignment, and
it would put the tvOS escape chord (the only controller way out of a stream there) on a
background queue. That is a real risk for a speculative gain. The comment says so at the
call site, and names the measurement to make first if it ever does bite: the host's
per-pad motion inter-arrival histogram already reports exactly this and would say whether
the delay is client-side or on the wire.

Gate: macOS `swift build` + the full suite (215 tests, 5 skipped, 0 failures) and the
iOS-triple typecheck green. No test pins the throttle removal or the capability gate:
both are properties of live `GCMotion` delivery, which this module cannot fake — there is
no injectable seam, and inventing one to assert "we called sendMotion twice" would test
the mock. They are argued at the call sites instead, in the same spirit as the parts of
`DsCapture` that are not unit-testable in their module either. On-glass verification is
owed with the two already outstanding on that rig.

enricobuehler 0e40b374e7 fix(client/android): DualSense acceleration arrived ~18% short
G16 leg 2. A DualSense over USB to an Android phone, streaming to a Linux host,
flat and face up: |accel| = 0.811 g where 1.000 is owed. Magnitude is
frame-invariant, so this is unambiguous regardless of the separate axis question
below, and it came from a 27-second static average — no sampling error in it.

`DsDevice` said so plainly: "Gyro/accel stay in raw device units". It read the
i16s out of the pad's report and forwarded them verbatim. But raw device units
are not wire units — the wire is fixed at 10000 LSB/g and the pads' native
resolution is the 8192 that hid-playstation calls DS_ACC_RES_PER_G. 8192/10000 =
0.819 predicted against 0.811 measured. Acceleration is now rescaled on both the
DualSense and DualShock 4 parse paths, clamped because the multiplier is >1 and
a real near-full-scale slam would otherwise wrap the i16 into an impossible
acceleration in the opposite direction.

Two things deliberately NOT done.

Gyro is left alone. It is almost certainly low by the same mechanism, but it
cannot be corrected with a nominal constant the way acceleration can: the still
average shows this pad's accel calibration is near-identity (~1% off), while the
gyro's emphatically is not — a near-identity gyro calibration would imply
1024 LSB per deg/s, i.e. ±32 deg/s full scale, which no controller has. Fixing
gyro means reading the pad's calibration feature report and applying its own
numbers, which also removes acceleration's residual 1% bias. `HidUsbLink` can
SET_REPORT but has no GET_REPORT path yet, so that is a real change rather than
a constant, and it is owed.

I tried to pin the gyro factor by integrating the on-glass rotations instead: a
nominal 90 deg yaw integrated to ~88.5 deg through the Apple client (correct)
and ~62.7 deg through Android. Directionally consistent, but the readout samples
at 5 Hz and a ~1 s rotation is badly undersampled, so that ratio is not a
constant anyone should ship. Recorded, not used.

The axis frame is also left alone. This leg puts gravity on Y where the Apple
leg put it on Z, so at least one client's frame is wrong — but Android forwards
the pad's own axis order un-remapped, which makes its reading evidence about the
hardware rather than about us, and resolving it needs the bare-metal reference
reading G16 step 1 calls for. Every bare-metal Linux box was unreachable
(Deck down, HTPC down, .25 is another KVM guest). Rescaling does not touch axis
order, so this fix stands however that resolves.

Gate: `:kit:compileDebugKotlin` and `:kit:testDebugUnitTest` green, JNI libs
built clean at the API-28 floor across 3 ABIs. On-glass re-verification owed:
re-run the at-rest reading and expect 0.99-1.00 g.

enricobuehler bbbcf321e5 Merge origin/main into worktree-native-decode-m0
main moved 93 commits while this branch ran. Two conflicts, both where main's new
work sat next to M10's excision:

packaging/flatpak/io.unom.Punktfunk.yml — main added the vendored gamescope WSI
layer (the only route to HDR on a Deck) and, before it, a vulkan-headers module.
Took both: this branch predates them and deletes neither. But the headers module's
stated consumer was pf-ffvk's bindgen over FFmpeg's hwcontext_vulkan.h, and M10
deleted pf-ffvk — so it now reads as dead weight to the next person. It is not:
the WSI layer IS a Vulkan layer, compiles against those headers, and builds after
it, so module order is the dependency. Rewrote the rationale to say so, including
why dropping it would be expensive to discover — flatpak.yml has no pull_request:
trigger, so a manifest break reaches main invisibly and a tag then ships no Linux
flatpak. Also recorded that the native decoder needs nothing from there: pf-vkdecode
reaches Vulkan through ash, which is pure Rust bindings, no bindgen, no C headers.

crates/pf-console-ui/src/screens/settings.rs — main restructured the gamepad
settings into TABS, which removed the per-row section headers; this branch had left
Some("Video") untouched from the merge base and added the pre-M10 decoder migration
next to it. Git could not tell those apart. Took main's structure (no header, its
deliberate change) with this branch's migration layered on: a stored `vulkan`,
`vaapi` or `d3d11va` names no preset in the tabbed list and would render as "—",
then silently rewrite the user's preference on the next save.

Gates on the merged tree, Linux container: fmt clean; cargo check --workspace
--all-targets clean; clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings clean; tests
green across pf-vkdecode (187), pf-client-core (163), pf-console-ui (58) and
punktfunk-host (447 of 448 — the one failure is the pre-existing
gamestream::stream::tests::sender_delivers_batches, a UDP-loopback EINTR under
qemu that fails identically on a pristine HEAD).

enricobuehler 81d257c7fa fix(client/audio): the in-core decoder conceals lost packets like every other client
A field report: game audio on a MacBook (M1) crackles over Wi-Fi against a host
that plays clean to other clients. The Apple client is the one client whose
Opus decode lives in core (punktfunk_connection_next_audio_pcm — AudioToolbox
has no multistream path), and that decoder only ever decoded packets that
ARRIVED. The Linux, Windows and Android decode loops all feed an
AudioGapTracker and synthesize libopus packet-loss concealment for every
packet the wire lost; the in-core path had the tracker sitting unused in the
same crate. So on Apple every lost 5 ms datagram — at ~200 packets/s over
Wi-Fi, a steady trickle — landed in the playout ring as a hard time-domain
gap: a click per loss, sustained crackle under real loss. The redundant-plane
recovery (0xD2) hides single losses when the host grants it, which is exactly
why the survivors are the burstier gaps that need concealing most.

The decode now runs through the same accounting as everyone else: concealed
frames land in front of the arriving frame in one contiguous buffer (the
embedder just writes it to its ring), a DTX marker advances the accounting
without being decoded, and the output buffer is pre-sized for a full
concealment run so the borrow-until-next-call pointer can never dangle.
Unit-tested against real libopus: gaps, duplicates, DTX-after-loss, and the
50 ms cap.

enricobuehler 5c05246098 feat: M10 — FFmpeg is gone from the client
cargo tree -p punktfunk-client-session finds no ffmpeg. The host still does,
which is the whole point: pf-encode keeps libavcodec unconditionally and no
host workflow, packaging script or licence file was touched.

Deleted: crates/pf-ffvk, video_vulkan.rs, video_vaapi.rs, video_libav.rs, the
libavcodec half of video_d3d11.rs, the av_log machinery, ffmpeg::codec::Id as
the decoder's vocabulary (the quic CODEC_* wire constants now serve, which is
why the evidence table was keyed on them), DecodedImage::VkFrame and ::Dmabuf,
the presenter's AVVkFrame lane, and the ffmpeg-fallback feature with
everything behind it. DrmFrameGuard collapses from an enum to a newtype, which
removes an unsafe impl Send. Roughly 25,000 lines.

Then the CI, packaging, licensing and docs work the plan's §6 lists: the
Windows workflows lose FFMPEG_DIR, PF_FFVK_VULKAN_INCLUDE and their PATH
prepend; the MSIX loses its DLL wildcard; the client .deb stops emitting libav
sonames on its own because depends come from dpkg-shlibdeps; arch, flatpak and
nix drop the dependency; and the README's "FFmpeg 7 or 8" contract narrows to
the host.

Three defects reached users' machines in the first cut, and none was in the
deletion itself.

All three desktop Settings UIs offer vulkan, vaapi and d3d11va as stored
decoder values, so those strings sit in shipped settings files today. Refusing
them by name — which is the correct rule for a stale pin — would have bricked
every upgraded client whose owner ever touched that dropdown. They now migrate
onto the native rung for the same hardware family, at decoder construction AND
at each dialog's lookup, because a legacy value that matches no preset
displays as "Automatic" and silently rewrites the user's preference on the
next save.

M9's evidence filter was deleted on the argument that with no libavcodec twin
below, barring an unproven rung removes hardware decode rather than moving
down one rung. That is true on Windows and false on Linux for Intel and every
unknown vendor id, where prefer_vulkan_first is false and the order is
native-vaapi → native-vk: a rung that has decoded nothing anywhere sitting
above one that is 250/250 on three drivers. Every Intel Linux desktop would
have moved from libavcodec VAAPI, shipping for years, onto pf-vaadec by
default — and a rung that constructs and then produces wrong pixels leaves
only by the error-streak demotion, which this codebase already documents as
not tripping on the B580's strobing. The filter is restored as a narrow, pure,
testable rule: an unproven rung yields to a proven one, and to nothing else.
Windows deliberately passes no rung below, because that vendor family is the
one with a measured wrong-pixel report against Vulkan decode, and trading no
evidence for evidence of corruption is the wrong direction.

And the notices still said FFmpeg was bundled. The root file is what both
desktop clients include_str! and what the MSIX ships, three lines under the
new card saying no FFmpeg is bundled; Apple's Acknowledgements said it too, on
iOS, tvOS and macOS. The generator now emits four per-client files scoped by
transitive closure — 0 FFmpeg mentions in each, verified — while the root file
keeps it for the host. That also ends the standing false attribution of
ffmpeg-next, GTK4, windows-rs and the NVENC SDK to an iPhone.

Windows has no reachable box, so it was compiled instead: a cross clippy at
-D warnings on x86_64 and aarch64-pc-windows-msvc with the C toolchain stubbed
so build scripts run without linking. That gate immediately caught an
include_str! path one directory too deep, which nothing else could have.

Gates: container clippy -D warnings, 160 tests, workspace check, both Windows
targets clean, client ffmpeg count 0 and host 2. The four decode crates are
untouched, so the hardware rungs' 250/250 stands.

⚠ Owed and unrun: no GPU has executed any of this milestone. M8's on-glass
software check, M7's D3D11 and VAAPI AV1 hardware legs, and M9's field bake
all still want hardware, and the bake window and criteria remain the user's.

enricobuehler ec44496285 feat(client): tell clients WHY a session ended, not just that it did
A session ending was a single bit. A player quitting their game, an
operator ending the session from the console, a stop the client itself
asked for, a host crashing and a Wi-Fi drop all arrived as the same
"closed" — so every client had to write one message covering all of
them, and every client picked an error. That is how quitting your own
game came to be reported as trouble on all three.

The information was already there and thrown away: the host closes with
APP_EXITED when a launched game exits, with 0 when it ends the session
cleanly and 1 when it fails, and a link that simply dies never closes at
all. The connection watcher now classifies that into a
PunktfunkEndReason — local, game exited, host ended, host error, lost —
and latches it before the shutdown flag, since the two are read by
different threads and the reason must never arrive second.

Exposed as punktfunk_connection_end_reason. This replaces the
game-exited flag added a moment ago rather than joining it: that
question is one row of this table, and it was never released. Still
additive to any embedder that ignores it, and the host sends the same
bytes either way, so the wire is untouched.

`is_normal()` is the question nearly every caller actually has, so both
the Rust and C surfaces answer it directly rather than making each
client re-derive which of five values are worth alarming a user about.
2026-08-06 14:30:33 +02:00
enricobuehler d4dd5f7a3d feat(client): a game exiting takes you back to its library
Quit a game you launched from a host's library and the stream ended with
"Session ended by <host>." on the host-selection screen — an error
report for something you had just done on purpose, and several taps away
from starting the next title.

The host has always said what happened: it closes the connection with
APP_EXITED when the game it launched for a session exits, and that
code's own documentation describes this feature. Nothing ever read it —
a search across every client found zero consumers. (It also could not
reach anyone until the previous commit, since the close only happens
once the lease declares the game gone.)

The core now records the reason as it observes the close, latched before
the shutdown flag because different threads watch the two, and exposes
it as punktfunk_connection_game_exited. Purely additive: a client that
never asks behaves exactly as before, the host sends identical bytes,
and the wire version is untouched — ABI 17.

The Apple client asks while the connection is still up, then treats a
game exit as the normal finish it is: no error banner, and if the
session began as a library launch it reopens that library so the next
title is one tap away. Any other ending — a stop, the host going away,
network loss — is unchanged. The other clients keep their existing
end-of-session behaviour; the call is there when they want it.
2026-08-06 13:58:57 +02:00
enricobuehler 2a57ee36f8 feat(client): M4 — the decoder's own verdict reaches the session
This program exists because a field corruption was architecturally
undetectable through FFmpeg: no decode-status read, no corrupt-frame
flag, errors only as scraped log lines, and no recovery-point signal so
intra-refresh healing was invisible. The native decoder has all of those.
M4 is where they stop being internal.

DecodeHealth counts, per session and without allocating per frame, what
the three answers actually are: damaged (the stream arrived incomplete),
refused (the rung would not decode it at all) and driver-failed (the
hardware says it could not decode what arrived), plus the current and
worst concealment run — the figures that separate one bad AU from a
stream that never came back. They ride the stats line additively, so an
FFmpeg session and a healthy native session emit byte-identical output
to today. The status-query capability is reported too: without it a
clean report cannot be told from an unmeasured one, which is the whole
nb_queries=0 lesson.

The headline is local recovery. Until now the pump could only learn that
intra-refresh healing finished from wire flags the host sends; absent
those it froze until the 500 ms backstop forced an IDR. The parsed
recovery-point SEI now feeds the re-anchor gate directly, so a session
lifts on the picture that is actually clean. Wire semantics are
untouched for every client that never calls it.

Detection now asks for recovery instead of erroring — an integrity
warning ticking the error streak would demote the native rung on exactly
the lossy links it exists to diagnose, where an FFmpeg rung conceals
silently and keeps its job.

Review round 12 found that trade had removed the escape hatch entirely.
Concealment returning Ok(None) reset the demotion streak, and worse: the
driver-verdict ledger is only populated when a frame ships, so under
continuous concealment no verdict was ever read and the erroring arm
could not fire at all. A host framing regression of the 0.23.0
slice-wire class — which does not self-heal, and which a keyframe does
not clear — would have frozen indefinitely with no demotion and a clean
integrity line, where before it demoted to FFmpeg-Vulkan and showed a
picture. Now only an answer that proves the rung works clears the
streak: a shipped frame, or a clean no-frame. Concealment neither ticks
nor clears, so a lossy link still cannot demote a healthy rung while a
driver failure interleaved with concealment reaches the threshold again.

Two more honesty defects from the same round. A rung refusing every AU
reported no integrity line at all — the founding failure mode, wearing
the shape of a clean bill of health; refusals are now counted. And
driver-failed could be non-zero on a device that cannot produce driver
verdicts, because a degraded timeline read looked the same as one; the
attribution is now withheld inside the counter rather than at call
sites, so the self-contradictory line is unrepresentable.

Local recovery also no longer trusts any recovery-point SEI: only one
whose target advances past an outstanding wave counts as a new wave, so
an encoder re-announcing the current wave with a decreasing count — legal,
and what x264 intra-refresh does — cannot lift the freeze early onto a
partially stale picture. Frames buffered across an arm are dropped by
decode order for the same reason.

Fault injection is a first-class tool now (PUNKTFUNK_AU_FAULT, inert
unless set, env read once). Its test replays the vendored vectors
through the real planners and asserts a negative the plan assumed away:
truncation and bit flips are PROVABLY invisible to the parser — Annex-B
carries no NALU length, so a cut slice is just a shorter slice and a
flipped payload byte is syntactically perfect. Only dropped AUs are
parser-detectable; the rest need the driver verdict, which is why the
status query matters. The H.265 leg found a second: three of that
vector's faulted AUs are sub-layer non-reference pictures, so dropping
them damages nothing and silence is correct — the test asserts both
verdicts and guards that neither half goes vacuous.

Per-frame decode latency was deliberately NOT built. Polling answers
only 'complete by now', and the pump polls once per AU, so every sample
would quantise up by as much as a frame interval — 8.3 ms at 120 Hz
against decodes of 0.1-2 ms. Sampling faster needs a spin or a second
thread on a decoder that is deliberately not Sync. A blocking per-frame
wait is the field scar that once capped a stream at 51 fps. The honest
sampled stat stands.

Also fixed, pre-existing: the re-anchor gate re-armed on every damaged
AU, so sustained damage permanently zeroed the mark count — meaning the
wire's two-mark rule could never complete on exactly the lossy links it
was written for.

Field note recorded while wiring this: intra_refresh_recovery is set by
exactly one encoder backend (Linux libav-NVENC under
PUNKTFUNK_INTRA_REFRESH). AMF and QSV run a wave with no wire mark, and
AMF emits no recovery-point SEI either, so AMD/Windows intra-refresh
sessions still have no clean recovery point by either route.

Gates: fmt clean; container clippy -D warnings zero across
pf-client-core + pf-presenter + pf-vkdecode + punktfunk-core; tests
69/131/129/354/41 plus 5 fault-detection green; cargo check --workspace
clean.

enricobuehler 0a72959ef7 Merge main into feat/android-pad-audio
86 commits of main, including the whole M1-M12 haptics sweep. Twelve conflicting files;
three of them were more than textual.

**The capability bits collided.** Both branches allocated the SAME wire bits for DIFFERENT
features: `client_caps 0x04` and `host_caps 0x20` are redundant desktop audio on main and
pad audio here. Merged naively, a peer would negotiate one and get the other. Pad audio
moves to the next free bits — `CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO = 0x08`, `HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO = 0x40` —
and the `abi.rs` mirrors move with them (their compile-time equality assertions caught the
mismatch, which is exactly what they are for).

**Both branches also claimed ABI v15.** Main's shipped (the rumble-policy floor), so the
pad-audio surface becomes **v16**.

**`native/input.rs` would have reintroduced a fixed bug.** This branch resets
`rumble_seq[idx]` on pad removal; M1 established that the client's reorder gate is
per-connection with no reset path, so restarting the host counter strands every later
envelope until it climbs back. Took main's seq-preserving `clear_pad_feedback` and kept only
the branch's `pad_streams.stop(idx)`.

The rest: `wiring_plan::plan` now delegates to main's `plan_with_formats`, so the pad-endpoint
filter moved into that body and the predicate behind it is factored out as `is_pad_render`
(also what B10 needs); `Ds5Feedback::AUDIO` derives from main's `REPORT_ID_LEN` like its
siblings; `AudioCtl` joins the explicitly-listed unhandled variants so the guard-false case is
covered rather than swept up by a `_`; `include/punktfunk_core.h` regenerated rather than
hand-merged.

enricobuehler 42a0dd52be refactor(haptics): one copy of each thing every rumble path was transcribing
Twelve findings from the sweep's DRY/docs/dead-code tail. Most are small; three found
real defects hiding behind the duplication.

**The UHID event ABI existed five times.** Every UHID gamepad backend — DualSense,
DualShock 4, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, Steam Controller 2 — carried its own verbatim
copy of the kernel's constants plus its own `put_cstr`, and they had already drifted:
`switch_pro` was missing the SET_REPORT pair entirely, and `steam_controller` read a
FIXED 16-byte SET_REPORT window instead of the event's own `size`. That last one is a
bug in both directions — a longer report was truncated, and a shorter one had the parser
reading whatever the reused event buffer still held past the payload, i.e. acting on
rumble values the game never wrote. Now one `uhid_abi` module owns the numbers plus the
two accessors that are easy to get subtly wrong, with tests on exactly that.

**A dead force-feedback id fallback.** ff-core's `input_ff_upload` picks a free effect
slot and writes it into the effect BEFORE uinput forwards the request, so the `id == -1`
branch could never run — and allocating from a local counter would have been the wrong
answer anyway, since the kernel owns that id space. Removed, with a `debug_assert` where
it stood.

**Apple's HID path silently dropped weak rumble.** `hidByte` took the top byte with no
non-zero floor, so every amplitude below 0x0100 rendered as exactly nothing. Android has
always floored it at 1; this was the odd one out. That converter also existed twice
byte-identically inside one Gradle module — now one `wireAmplitudeToByte`.

Also: the DS5 output-report layout gets named offsets (`dualsense_proto::out_report`)
documenting all three transport bases — USB 0, SDL payload −1, Bluetooth +2 — since the
differing bases are transport-forced, not drift. `pf-client-core` cannot import them (it
and `pf-inject` do not depend on each other, and a DualSense layout has no business in
`punktfunk-core`, their only shared crate), so its copy now DERIVES its offsets by
explicit subtraction and a test pins the relationship. `PUNKTFUNK_HID_EFFECT_MAX` sizes
the struct it describes instead of a second literal 11 — the header now emits
`uint8_t effect[PUNKTFUNK_HID_EFFECT_MAX]`. The rumble policy engine's `min_pulse_ms`
and `keepalive_ms` docs stop naming cases nothing implements: no in-tree caller sets
`min_pulse_ms`, and the macOS DualSense-over-BT keepalive the doc cited CANNOT be served
by the quirk, because that renderer skips writes whose levels are unchanged and would
swallow the engine's re-emit — it keeps its own keepalive instead. `TrackpadHaptic` is
marked as staged scaffolding (the tag is on a shipped wire; removing the variant would
not reclaim it). Three ×257-vs-`<<8` doc comments corrected — the scaling itself is fine,
both round-trip to 255. `backstop_ms.max(160)` deleted as unreachable (the engine floors
at 500). New tests for `Ds5Feedback` and for the Android rumble JNI packing on BOTH sides,
with `MAX_PADS <= 16` now a compile-time assertion rather than a comment.

Closes S1-S9, S11, T2, T3 (design/haptics-sweep-2026-08-03.md M12).

S11's second half is NOT a defect and was left alone: `clients/session/src/main.rs`
calls `set_forwarding` unconditionally on every params-build (its own comment explains
why — browse mode reuses one service across launches), so `Ctl::Forwarding` routinely
arrives unchanged and that early-out is what stops a redundant `sync_open` + Valve-HIDAPI
cycle each launch.

Verified: pf-inject clippy -D warnings 0 / 91 tests; pf-client-core + punktfunk-core
clippy 0 / 437 tests (amd64 container); punktfunk-client-android 7 tests; Android :kit:
6 tests; Apple swift build + 189 tests / 0 failures; cargo fmt --all --check clean. Each
new test probed by reverting its fix — the fixed SET_REPORT window fails 3, a broken pack
shift fails 3, dropping the amplitude floor fails 1, and a wrong DS5 offset either fails
the pin or refuses to compile.

enricobuehler 2d43275fcb fix(core/abi)!: stop exporting 149 unprefixed macros into every embedder's namespace
BREAKING (C header only): constants such as MAX_PADS, TAG_LEN, ABI_VERSION,
INPUT_MAGIC and the whole BTN_/AXIS_ family are now PUNKTFUNK_-prefixed.

cbindgen emits a bare #define per `pub const`, so those names landed in the
namespace of every C program that includes the header. The rename table already
said this was the rule and already carried the handful someone had noticed —
and its own comment spells out why it matters: a clashing #define silently
takes the last definition rather than failing to compile, so the failure mode
is a wrong value, not a build error. This is the remaining 149.

Associated constants are deliberately left alone. cbindgen already qualifies
those with their type name, which is the very property whose absence makes a
bare MAX_PADS dangerous — they are namespaced, just not by us.

Nothing in this repository consumed the unprefixed spellings except one Swift
test, which sat next to lines already using the prefixed form because its
constant happened never to have been added to the table; it is updated here.
The C harness links and runs against the regenerated header.

Scheduled deliberately: the sweep flagged this for a release boundary, and

enricobuehler 34ad3cc611 feat(host/wire): mid-session shard-payload renegotiation, driven by the MTU verdict
Phases 1-2 of design/shard-payload-reneg.md, on top of the Phase 0
per-frame geometry. The leg-1 watcher stops merely diagnosing the
constrained path and heals the CURRENT session; the same machinery,
inverted, takes a proven jumbo LAN up to ~8.9 KB shards.

- Messages: MSG_SHARD_PAYLOAD_CHANGED (0x08, host→client, {shard_payload
u16}) and MSG_SHARD_PAYLOAD_ACK (0x09, the echo). Asymmetric by
design: a shrink re-keys the packetizer at the next AU immediately
after sending (per-frame pinning makes ordering irrelevant; the ack is
telemetry), a grow emits nothing above the old size until the ack —
the ack is the gate even though client buffers are statically sized.
- Client: one dispatch arm in the shared pump control task (all client
  families) — validate against the advertised receive bounds, ack;
out-of-bounds requests get SILENCE, not an ack, so a buggy host can
never read a granted grow out of garbage.
- Host driver: the wire_mtu watcher grows a ShardReneg arm — on a
below-ceiling verdict it still records the learned budget (session 2
starts right) and now also shrinks session 1 at the ~3-10 s verdict
mark; with the jumbo opt-in (PUNKTFUNK_JUMBO=1, or PUNKTFUNK_WIRE_MTU
  > 1500 — one knob, derived) it sends the ack-gated grow after a
settled-at-sealed-jumbo proof and then stays alive as the revert
guard: quinn's blackhole detection lowering current_mtu shrinks the
wire back through the same path. The QUIC MTUD probe ceiling rises
from 1472 to the sealed jumbo size with the opt-in (per-ENDPOINT: a
few extra failed probes toward non-jumbo peers, zero cost otherwise).
- Apply point: Session::set_shard_payload drained in the send loop next
to the adaptive-FEC target, gated on no open streamed AU (a streamed
frame's shard-aligned tiling derives from the size it began with).
- Renegotiation is gated OFF for PyroWave sessions: their clients parse
chunk-aligned AUs in windows of the Welcome value pinned at session
start (read once over the C ABI), so a mid-stream re-key would corrupt
the parse — those sessions keep the leg-1 next-session clamp. This
also settles the plan's open question on the two wire_chunk consumers:
both are PyroWave-only, so the gate covers them entirely.
- Legacy peers are inert both ways: no Hello advertisement → the host
never constructs the driver; an old host never sends the message.

core: 296/296 --features quic + clippy -D warnings (macOS), fmt; the
regenerated header carries the new message ids (drift gate).

enricobuehler 290d760ea4 feat(core/wire): per-frame shard geometry, jumbo ceiling, Hello advertisement
Phase 0 of mid-session shard-payload renegotiation (planning
design/shard-payload-reneg.md), stacked on the leg-1 MTU resilience. All
three legs are client-side and forward-compatible: deployed clients that
carry them accept a mid-session shard change the moment a future host
sends one, and nothing changes on the wire until then.

- W0.1 — the reassembler's strict shard_bytes firewall becomes per-frame
pinning: a frame's first-arriving packet pins that frame's shard size
  (bounds-checked to [min_shard_bytes, max_shard_bytes], even), later
packets must match the pin, and the per-frame block ceiling derives
from the pinned size (a session-level cap would reject legitimate
post-shrink frames). The reorder race between an ordered control
message and unordered video dies structurally: old-geometry frames in
flight complete under their own pin while new frames arrive under the
new one, and no cross-geometry splice can land in one buffer. The
in-flight budget stays byte-based and exact.
- W0.2 — MAX_DATAGRAM_BYTES 2048 → 9216: every receive path (transport
RECV_BUF, the recvmmsg ring) now accepts sealed jumbo datagrams
  (9000-MTU LAN ≈ 8908-byte shards). Static buffers over resize-on-ack:
the ring delta is 128 × ~7 KiB ≈ 896 KiB per client session, lazily
allocated, hosts unaffected. Grep verdict: no embedder uses the
constant directly, so no C ABI bump — the regenerated header rides
  along (drift gate).
- W0.3 — trailing Hello field max_shard_payload: u16 (0/absent =
legacy), the append-with-placeholder discipline of video_caps/
client_caps. One field is both the renegotiation capability flag and
the jumbo ceiling; core's pump advertises it for all client families,
  the probe too.
- Host seam for Phase 1, dead until wired: Packetizer::set_shard_payload
(re-derives the block ceilings; construction delegates to it) +
  Session::set_shard_payload (host-only, Config::validate parity).

Verification (the 0.23.0 lesson — geometry changes breed sizing bugs):
the slice-wire suite re-runs at shard 512/1216/1408/8908 (exact-multiple
sweep, lossy + reversed roundtrips, sentinel path, in-flight budget);
mid-stream shrink→grow→revert delivery; the old-geometry reorder race;
cross-geometry splice rejection; firewall bounds non-vacuous both ways;
a 48-case mixed-geometry reorder-torture proptest asserting per-frame
byte-identical DELIVERY and an exactly-zero final budget; and a sealed
loopback session test (continuous crypto/replay) delivering frames
across live re-keys — every test asserts delivered frames, never the
absence of errors.

enricobuehler 4bc7eecf05 feat(host/wire): MTU resilience for the video data plane
Video datagrams are sealed at a shard payload sized for a clean 1500-byte
MTU (1472-byte UDP payloads). A host whose route to the client crosses a
smaller-MTU hop (a VPN/overlay adapter claiming the LAN route, a lowered
NIC MTU) delivers every small flow — QUIC control, hole punch, input,
audio — while 100% of video datagrams die: the client sits on a black
screen reporting zero loss and the host streams into the void with every
gauge green. Field-reported as 'connects fine, black screen forever'.

Three legs, none of which changes a session on a healthy path:

- PUNKTFUNK_WIRE_MTU operator override: shard payload derived from a
  given on-wire IP MTU. Wire-compatible — Welcome::shard_payload is
already negotiated per session (the v4/v6 split ships two values
today) and every client follows the negotiated value.
- Detection: the QUIC MTU-discovery probe ceiling moves from quinn's
stock 1452 to exactly the sealed video-datagram size (1472), so a
control connection's settled MTU becomes a verdict on the path:
settled at the ceiling proves it carries video, settled below proves
it cannot. A per-session watcher samples after the search has settled
(live-connection guard against mid-search false learns) and logs an
actionable WARN naming the failure shape and the diagnosis commands.
- Healing: the measured budget is recorded per peer IP; the next
handshake clamps shard_payload to fit, so a reconnect self-heals. A
later session that reaches the ceiling erases the record.

Verified: core 286/286 --features quic + clippy -D warnings (macOS);
host clippy -D warnings + native:: tests 44/44 (pf-lxcheck container).
The regenerated C header picks up the new MIN_SHARD_PAYLOAD constant.

enricobuehlerandClaude Opus 5 7077b0a0df feat(core/audio): bitrate tiers, a shared de-jitter policy, and a redundant audio plane
Foundation for the audio quality + latency plan (design/audio-quality-and-latency.md).
All three pieces are pure and unit-tested here so the four client rings and the Windows
host glue that follow stay thin.

**Bitrate tiers** (`AudioTier`). The layout table's `bitrate` becomes the `Standard`
value, so that tier reproduces the pre-tier wire byte-for-byte — the tier machinery is
provably non-regressive. `High` (stereo 256 kbps) is the default: 5 ms Opus frames are
much less efficient than 20 ms ones, so the historical 128 kbps buys roughly what
~100 kbps buys at 20 ms, while the same session carries tens of Mbps of video. Purely a
host-side encoder knob — libopus reads the bitrate out of the packet, so no client
change and no negotiation.

**`JitterPolicy`** — the ms-denominated de-jitter state machine every client will share.
Two defects it exists to fix: (1) each ring computed its target as `3 x quantum`, a sane
15 ms at a 5 ms quantum and a silent 64 ms at a 20 ms one; (2) every ring primed *up* and
clamped at a ceiling, and none walked the depth back *down*, so drift/bursts added latency
permanently — Android, with no shed at all, converged on its 120 ms cap. Here a depth EWMA
that sits above target for 2 s of consumed audio sheds ONE 5 ms frame with a crossfade.
Driven by samples consumed rather than the wall clock: allocation- and syscall-free (safe
in a realtime callback) and deterministic under test.

`every_preset_sheds_before_it_trims` pins the invariant that makes this real rather than
decorative. The first draft had `headroom_ms` <= the shed threshold on all four presets,
so the ring was trimmed back before the average could ever reach the shed point: drift
correction was dead code and the ratchet test passed for the wrong reason (the hard cap
did the work). `a_transient_burst_does_not_shed` caught it. The shed point is now derived
from `headroom_ms` so it cannot invert again.

**`0xD2` redundant audio** — each datagram carries its frame plus a copy of the previous
one, so a single lost packet is reconstructed instead of concealed. Opus in-band FEC
cannot do this job: LBRR is a SILK feature and the desktop encoder is CELT-only
(RESTRICTED_LOWDELAY, 5 ms), so `set_inband_fec` there is a no-op. Costs no latency —
the copy rides the successor, which arrives inside de-jitter slack that already exists.
Gated capable-and-agreed via CLIENT_CAP_AUDIO_RED/HOST_CAP_AUDIO_RED; every other session
keeps the `0xC9` wire unchanged. 0xD1 is left free for the pad-audio program.

cbindgen: prefix the four new exported constants. `FRAME_MS`/`SAMPLE_RATE_HZ` as bare C
macros are the same hazard the BTN_* renames already document — a clashing #define takes
the last definition silently rather than failing to compile.

Verified: 300 core tests, clippy -D warnings, fmt. (`c_abi` fails identically on a
pristine tree — this Mac has no system libopus for the C harness link.)

enricobuehler 5be494f490 merge: bring main into the pad-audio branch
Main had moved 34 commits past the merge-base and 13 files had diverged.
Resolving now rather than later, since the force-feedback sweep work is landing
in the same files.

Five conflicts needed hand resolution. Four were "each side added something
different" and keep both: the Forwarding and PadAudioPrefs control variants with
their handlers and setters (pf-client-core/gamepad.rs), both of the session's
pre-attach declarations (forwarding first, so slots still declare their
pad-audio caps at open time), main's WiredPlan/fingerprint alongside the
branch's pad_render_ids (audio_control.rs), and main's judge_default signature
(wasapi_cap.rs).

wiring_plan.rs was not mechanical. Main's 652abeb3 added a flagged last-resort
loopback tier; the branch had added a fifth `plan` parameter excluding pad
endpoints from every role. Taking either side alone loses the other, and
combining them carelessly is worse than both: the new last-resort tier would
happily select the pad's own speaker endpoint, which is stamped "DualSense
Wireless Controller" with no virtual marker precisely so games read it as the
pad's speaker — routing the entire desktop mix into the controller's voice
coils. The branch's exclusion shadows `renders` before any tier runs, so the
last resort inherits it; `a_pad_is_never_the_last_resort` pins that, including
that a pad-only candidate set stays honestly unsatisfiable rather than falling
back onto the coils.

Verified: clippy -p punktfunk-host -p pf-client-core --all-targets --locked
-D warnings = 0; pf-client-core 93/93; punktfunk-host 387 passed with only the
known-environmental gamestream sender_delivers_batches UDP-loopback flake;
wiring_plan 21/21; fmt clean.

NOT verified: audio_control.rs and wasapi_cap.rs are cfg(windows), so neither
the Linux container nor xcheck.sh compiles them. Those two resolutions have had
review only and need the Windows runner before this merges.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 48511d1267 fix(abr): probe throughput is measured over the client's receive interval
The capacity probe divided client-side bytes by the HOST's burst
duration — a window wrong on both edges (base snapshotted before the
burst reached the host, frozen only when the ProbeResult landed, while
the host's clock stops the moment ITS send window closes, before the
switch/kernel queue finishes draining toward the client). On a 1 GbE
link a 2 Gbps burst target "measured" 1266 Mbps and set an 886 Mbps
climb ceiling the link could never carry — permanent for the session,
because set_ceiling never lowers.

The reassembler now stamps probe-scoped counters (bytes, packets,
first/last arrival, monotonic ns) at its FLAG_PROBE routing, so video
around the burst contaminates neither numerator nor denominator; the
throughput divisor is the client's first→last arrival interval, with
the host duration kept as the fallback when fewer than two probe
packets arrived. The user-facing speed test shares the corrected
computation (ProbeOutcome/PunktfunkProbeResult layouts unchanged;
elapsed_ms docs updated to the new semantics).

Two guards ride along:
- PUNKTFUNK_ABR_MAX_MBPS clamps inside set_ceiling — the one funnel
every learned ceiling passes through — so a user cap binds no matter
  what any probe concludes.
- The controller latches decode_cap_kbps when two CONSECUTIVE backoffs
carry decode-severe evidence (deep decode excursion or jump-to-live
flush) at a similar pre-backoff rate, mirroring host_cap_kbps for the
client decoder: a knee below the link ceiling was a permanent 30-60 s
sawtooth costing a flush + dropped-frame burst per cycle (1440p120
  HEVC field case, knee ~490 Mbps). One spurious flush never latches;
the cap re-probes on the CAP_REPROBE_WINDOWS clock, so it lifts when
  the decoder recovers.

Also rights the three stale "3 Gbps" probe-clamp comments (the host
constant has been 10 Gbps since MAX_PROBE_KBPS moved).

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 ed3d236ab8 feat(pad-audio): DualSense audio haptics + speaker, host->client end to end
The 0xD1 pad-audio plane streams a DualSense's voice-coil haptics (back
channel pair, 5 ms Opus frames) and speaker (front pair, 10 ms) per pad from
a Windows host to the SDL clients, which render them into a USB DualSense's
own 4-channel audio device.

Wire (punktfunk-core, ABI v15): PAD_AUDIO_MAGIC 0xD1 [pad][kind][seq][pts]
[opus]; CLIENT_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x04 / HOST_CAP_PAD_AUDIO 0x20; per-pad render
capability rides GamepadArrival flags bits 8/9, sent only toward a host that
advertised its cap so old hosts see byte-identical arrivals; silence is a
frozen seq (mic-mute discipline), loss is a seq gap concealed via
AudioGapTracker. HidOutput::AudioCtl (0xCD kind 0x06) forwards the 0x02
report's audio-control bytes 5..=10 change-only, value-deduped, with a
once-per-pad "title asserted haptics-select" diagnosis log.

Windows host endpoint provider (audio/windows/pad_endpoint.rs): per-pad
render endpoints are additional devnode instances of Valve's Steam Streaming
Speakers driver (SetupDiRegisterDeviceInfo, NOT the class installer - it
needs an interactive window station), stamped with DualSense identity: desc
"Wireless Controller", device name "DualSense Wireless Controller",
ContainerId = the virtual pad's PFDS GUID, 4ch/48k format triplet.
IPropertyStore route first, ACL-repaired registry fallback (the MMDevices
keys deny writes even to SYSTEM; the owner's implicit WRITE_DAC + an ACE for
S-1-5-18 resolved by SID is the way in). Provisioned at host startup
(PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO, PUNKTFUNK_PAD_AUDIO_SLOTS, default 1), idempotent via
a persisted PunktfunkPadIndex marker; pad endpoints are structurally
ineligible for the mic/loopback wiring plan and guarded against default-
device theft; capture is WASAPI loopback on the stamped endpoint. Devtest:
punktfunk-host pad-endpoint ensure|remove|status.

Host service (native/pad_audio.rs): per-(session,pad) thread, loopback 4ch
-> pair splitter -> per-kind stereo Opus (48k LowDelay CBR 64k) -> per-kind
silence gate (opens at peak>=1e-3, 250 ms hangover, gated = no send + frozen
seq) -> datagrams. Spawned from the native input pump when a DualSense/Edge
arrival carries audio bits and both caps negotiated; idempotent re-arrivals;
reaped on remove and teardown.

Client tier A (pf-client-core/pad_audio.rs): settings pad_haptics (default
on) and pad_speaker (default "pad"); tier A = wired USB DS5/Edge via SDL
connection state with an audio-sibling fallback; correlation maps the SDL
HID path to the pad's own render endpoint (Windows: ContainerId match +
4ch gate via registry; Linux: Sony sink signature); renderer decodes both
kinds into a quad interleave and plays it on the pad's endpoint (WASAPI
autoconvert / PipeWire target.object, 240-2400 frame ring floor,
dont-reconnect so an unplug never re-routes haptics to the desktop
speakers). SDL's DualSense driver sets "disable audio haptics" whenever it
drives rumble emulation, so tier-A pads suppress wire rumble and send one
cleared-enable-bits effects packet to keep the actuators live; AudioCtl
bytes fold back into the effects packet at report-minus-one offsets.

Verification: punktfunk-core 265 tests (macOS) + clippy -D warnings (mac +
Linux docker); pf-inject 85 tests (Linux docker); punktfunk-host cargo
check + clippy + 19 pad tests + 46 audio-module tests (Windows box);

on-glass run (host deploy + real title + physical pad), the stamp-route
split at runtime, exclusive-mode Initialize isolation, Linux-host emission
(the per-pad PipeWire sink is not in this change - Windows hosts only).
Scope excluded deliberately: tier B (Apple CoreHaptics) and tier C
(haptics->rumble derivation), pad_speaker="mix", Android leg, settings UI
surfaces (keys are serde-defaulted), GameStream-plane arrivals (audio_caps
always 0 there).

enricobuehler 3c509d48c9 feat(core/abi): report_phase earns its version — C ABI 13 -> 14
`punktfunk_connection_report_phase` (fa822744, coherence tail 1d31e4c5) and the
`PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CAP_PHASE_LOCK` mirror const (7cf71dd2) grew the embeddable C
surface without moving ABI_VERSION. Every prior additive entry in that doc list
bumped it — v3's wake_on_lan, v5's next_rumble2, v8's clipboard block, v13's
send_pen — precisely so an embedder can ask punktfunk_abi_version() whether the
function it wants to link is there. Left at 13, the one number that answers that
question said "no report_phase" about a core that has one.

The header was already regenerated with both symbols, so it carried the new
surface under the old number; the regen here changes exactly the #define and its
doc block and nothing else, which also confirms the committed header was
otherwise current.

Additive and capability-gated: the host arms on report receipt, the wire grows
only PhaseReport (0x32) — a control message an old host never reads — and a
strict-prefix append on the 0xCF host-timing tail, so WIRE_VERSION stays 2. No
in-tree caller compares ABI_VERSION against a literal; mgmt/tests.rs asserts
against the symbol.

Verified: cargo build -p punktfunk-core regenerates include/punktfunk_core.h to

harness cannot run on this Mac (`ld: library 'opus' not found`, the documented

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 7cf71dd218 feat(clients): the Apple deadline presenter reports its latch phase
Phase-locked capture had no client half on Apple — the host's v3 controller
(grid-locked submits, coherence-gated engage) shipped with only the Android
reporter feeding it. Now the stage-4 link thread flushes the same v2
circular arrival-phase statistic at ~1 Hz:

- PhaseReporter (Stage2Pipeline): the decode callback deposits per-AU
reassembly-completion stamps, the CAMetalDisplayLink update deposits the
latch grid (period = window-min of update spacing), and the flush ports
  punktfunk_core::phase::circular_latch verbatim — a period-smeared Wi-Fi
link reads coherence ≈ 0 and the host correctly never engages; a wired
link opens the gate. Binds/unbinds per session like DecodeReport.
- PunktfunkConnection.reportPhase wraps the existing ABI entry point.
- Hello honesty: iOS/tvOS advertise CLIENT_CAP_PHASE_LOCK (macOS stays
without — the stage-2 arrival presenter has no latch grid), Android now
sets the bit its reporter already earned, and the ABI grows the
  PUNKTFUNK_CLIENT_CAP_PHASE_LOCK mirror const (header regenerated).
Advisory in v1: the host arms on report receipt.
- Stage-3 doc comment no longer calls itself the tvOS default (stage-4 took
that over in the 2026-07 rebuild).

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 440cb8d1ec feat(core/wire): streamed AUs cut blocks at slice boundaries, not at 5.5 MB
The streamed-AU path only ever flushed a block when a full FEC block's
worth of bytes accumulated - at real bitrates a frame finished encoding
before that, so every AU degenerated to one tail-heavy send and the
overlap the sentinel wire was built for never happened.

Now a slice boundary flushes every whole shard (floored at
MIN_STREAM_BLOCK_SHARDS so per-block parity stays economical), which
means blocks are variable-size and can no longer be addressed by the
uniform block_index * K_max formula. USER_FLAG_SLICE_STREAM marks such
frames on every packet: sentinel blocks reuse frame_bytes as their
shard-aligned base offset, the final block's base derives from the
totals, and the receiver pins/validates positionally (sentinels must sit
strictly below the final block's base; a mixed-flag or out-of-range
header is dropped before it can place a byte).

The AU's own flag bit gates the wire shape, and the host sets it only
toward clients advertising STREAMED_AU + MULTI_SLICE, so shipped
receivers keep seeing the byte-identical legacy sentinel
(PUNKTFUNK_SLICE_STREAM=0 pins legacy for A/B). Both sides bound the
per-frame block count by the same floored formula, and the flush loop
cuts as many blocks as a chunk completes - a slice bigger than one FEC
block can't leave an oversized final block behind.

enricobuehlerandClaude Fable 5 1d31e4c565 feat(phase-lock): controller v2 — circular phase, coherence gate, decay-to-zero
Round-1 on-glass falsified two v1 assumptions in one morning (NP3 ↔ .173):

- A median lead is immovable under period-spanning jitter (uniform mod P),
so v1 orbited the period at 2 ms/s forever — and the dead-signal freeze
hotfix never armed, because ±1.5 ms of window sampling noise kept
resetting its 'error responded' check. Thresholds can't referee noise.
- A HELD hold is not free: it delays sampling after the capture stamp,
taxing e2e by up to a period (user-measured: ~+4 ms during the orbit).
The correct failure response is DECAY TO ZERO, never freeze-in-place.

v2, all three layers:
- Wire: PhaseReport grows a length-discriminated coherence tail (27-byte
  form; the u16::MAX sentinel encodes as the byte-identical 25-byte v1 —
strict-prefix discipline, both forms pinned by tests).
- Client: the reporter sends the CIRCULAR vector-mean latch phase mod the
  panel period + its coherence (‰); pf.present logs circ=/coh=.
- Host: steps only while coherent (floor 300‰; a v1 report bypasses the
gate), along the signed SHORTEST way around the period, under a
cumulative 1.25-period travel budget that is noise-immune by construction
(it integrates applied steps, not reported errors); incoherence or budget
exhaustion decays the hold to zero and re-arms once flat. Deadband
convergence resets the budget — tight regimes lock exactly as designed.

report_phase + the C ABI mirror gain the coherence parameter (canary-only
ABI, hours old, sole caller in-tree). Gates: docker amd64 clippy
--all-targets -D warnings (host+core, nvenc) clean; core suite 244/244;
cargo ndk arm64 check clean.
